00:00:58 --> 00:01:02 I felt as though God had smashed me underfoot like a cigarette.
00:01:03 --> 00:01:05 At night, I would thrash my head on the pillow,
00:01:06 --> 00:01:08 hoping to break my neck at a higher level
00:01:08 --> 00:01:10 and thereby ending my misery.
00:01:12 --> 00:01:14 After I left hospital, I refused to get out of bed.
00:01:14 --> 00:01:17 My paralysis was permanent and inside I died.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:21 You don't have to be in a wheelchair to identify.
00:01:22 --> 00:01:26 You already know that sad situations sometimes don't get better.

00:01:41 --> 00:01:42 When we feel utterly overwhelmed,
00:01:42 --> 00:01:45 we try soaking in the tub,
00:01:46 --> 00:01:47 sweating on the treadmill,
00:01:48 --> 00:01:49 splurging on a new dress
00:01:49 --> 00:01:52 or heading to the mountains for the weekend.
00:01:52 --> 00:01:55 We smile and we say we are trusting God,
00:01:55 --> 00:01:58 but deep down we know it's a lie.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:03 We're only trusting that he won't load us up with more.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:08 A remarkable woman
00:02:08 --> 00:02:12 who has helped countless people
00:02:12 --> 00:02:15 through the process of suffering
00:02:15 --> 00:02:16 and navigating suffering.
00:02:18 --> 00:02:20 She is the woman who once said,
00:02:21 --> 00:02:26 I would rather be in a wheelchair for life with God
00:02:26 --> 00:02:29 than on my two legs without him.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:35 If you've just tuned in for us for the first time,

00:02:42 --> 00:02:45 What we're doing is we're building up to Easter
00:02:45 --> 00:02:48 where we are looking at resurrection life,
00:02:48 --> 00:02:50 what it looks like for us right now
00:02:50 --> 00:02:54 and how this new birth, new life in Jesus,
00:02:54 --> 00:02:59 how it changes and transforms every aspect of our lives.
00:03:00 --> 00:03:04 And today we're looking at a new way of viewing suffering,
00:03:05 --> 00:03:08 managing suffering, experiencing suffering,
00:03:08 --> 00:03:10 processing suffering.
00:03:10 --> 00:03:12 So I've got four points on the St. Paul's app
00:03:12 --> 00:03:13 if you want to go there.
00:03:13 --> 00:03:17 The first one is the certainty of suffering.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 I get that from verse six.
00:03:19 --> 00:03:22 If in all this you greatly rejoice,
00:03:22 --> 00:03:26 though now for a little while you may have to suffer grief
00:03:26 --> 00:03:27 in all kinds of trials.
00:03:28 --> 00:03:30 Notice how that reads.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:33 You may have had to suffer grief.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:38 That statement is communicating a term
00:03:38 --> 00:03:40 from the original language,
00:03:40 --> 00:03:46 which means it is necessary to suffer grief.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:48 It is necessary.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:52 It's a certainty that you will suffer grief.
00:03:53 --> 00:03:56 Peter is saying that suffering is a certainty
00:03:56 --> 00:03:57 rather than a possibility.
00:03:58 --> 00:04:00 That is, we live in a broken world
00:04:00 --> 00:04:03 and so we should expect it
00:04:03 --> 00:04:06 rather than be shocked when it happens.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:10 Chapter four, verse 12, Peter says,
00:04:10 --> 00:04:15 do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal
00:04:15 --> 00:04:17 that has come upon you to test you
00:04:17 --> 00:04:21 as though something strange were happening to you.
00:04:21 --> 00:04:24 We should be prepared for suffering
00:04:24 --> 00:04:29 because if we are not prepared for suffering,
00:04:29 --> 00:04:32 then we're in fact not prepared for life.
00:04:32 --> 00:04:34 We're not ready for life itself.
00:04:34 --> 00:04:41 There is no way possible in this world
00:04:41 --> 00:04:47 to create some kind of designer life
00:04:47 --> 00:04:51 that is free from bereavement, illness,
00:04:51 --> 00:04:54 financial challenges, personal betrayals,
00:04:54 --> 00:04:59 and whole range of other trials.
00:05:00 --> 00:05:02 Even Jesus, the perfect man,
00:05:02 --> 00:05:05 suffered terribly to bring about God's redemptive purposes.
00:05:06 --> 00:05:09 So why would we expect anything different for ourselves?
00:05:09 --> 00:05:14 Sometimes I reckon that half of the pain
00:05:14 --> 00:05:18 that I personally experience
00:05:18 --> 00:05:21 when I suffer from a trial
00:05:21 --> 00:05:25 is from the shock of actually going through it
00:05:25 --> 00:05:26 in the first place.
00:05:26 --> 00:05:31 It's because they're not expecting it.
00:05:32 --> 00:05:34 And yet this world is deeply broken,
00:05:35 --> 00:05:36 deeply, deeply broken.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:39 So that raises the second point,
00:05:39 --> 00:05:40 which is the problem of suffering.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:42 Every single culture,
00:05:42 --> 00:05:43 every single worldview
00:05:44 --> 00:05:48 has to have some kind of response
00:05:48 --> 00:05:50 to the reality of suffering,
00:05:51 --> 00:05:53 the reality of trials
00:05:53 --> 00:05:54 and the brokenness of this world.
00:05:54 --> 00:05:58 If a worldview does not have a response to it,
00:05:59 --> 00:06:01 it's a defective worldview there and then.
00:06:01 --> 00:06:02 It's the issue
00:06:02 --> 00:06:05 that every single human being faces,
00:06:05 --> 00:06:06 rich or poor,
00:06:06 --> 00:06:08 no matter what culture you are from.
00:06:12 --> 00:06:14 So how does it deal
00:06:14 --> 00:06:16 with the big question of suffering?
00:06:19 --> 00:06:22 Human suffering poses questions like,
00:06:22 --> 00:06:23 for instance, the Christian,
00:06:23 --> 00:06:27 how could a loving God allow so much suffering?
00:06:28 --> 00:06:32 How can the hypothesis of a loving, powerful God
00:06:32 --> 00:06:35 stand against the crushing weight
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 of human suffering?
00:06:38 --> 00:06:39 What's your worldview?
00:06:39 --> 00:06:41 What's your answer to that question?
00:06:42 --> 00:06:45 Well, the famous atheist Richard Dawkins
00:06:45 --> 00:06:48 looks at all the weight of human suffering
00:06:48 --> 00:06:51 and declares that our universe
00:06:51 --> 00:06:53 has precisely the properties
00:06:53 --> 00:06:54 we would expect,
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 we should expect,
00:06:55 --> 00:06:57 if there is at bottom
00:06:57 --> 00:06:58 no design,
00:06:58 --> 00:06:59 no purpose,
00:06:59 --> 00:07:00 no evil,
00:07:00 --> 00:07:00 no good,
00:07:00 --> 00:07:02 nothing but blind,
00:07:02 --> 00:07:04 pitiless indifference.
00:07:05 --> 00:07:08 That is the secular human response.
00:07:08 --> 00:07:11 The atheistic response to human suffering
00:07:11 --> 00:07:15 is that there is no meaning at all.
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 At all.
00:07:19 --> 00:07:21 So what Dawkins does,
00:07:21 --> 00:07:23 and Sam Harris and other,
00:07:23 --> 00:07:24 you know,
00:07:24 --> 00:07:25 more prominent atheists do,
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 and the atheistic worldview,
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 is that if you remove God
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 from the equation,
00:07:31 --> 00:07:34 then what you have is relief.
00:07:34 --> 00:07:37 The problem with human suffering
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 is God.
00:07:38 --> 00:07:40 So take God out of the equation
00:07:40 --> 00:07:42 and somehow you will have relief.
00:07:43 --> 00:07:43 In other words,
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 there is no meaning,
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 there is no reason,
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 there is no hope,
00:07:47 --> 00:07:49 so stop worrying about
00:07:49 --> 00:07:51 trying to find some greater purpose in life
00:07:51 --> 00:07:54 when you're in the midst of trauma and trial
00:07:54 --> 00:07:56 and you'll feel better about yourself.
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 Already feeling relieved.
00:08:04 --> 00:08:08 But it is an incredibly bleak view
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 of the universe.
00:08:11 --> 00:08:14 It in fact erodes the very foundations
00:08:14 --> 00:08:16 of which we balance life
00:08:16 --> 00:08:18 and our humanness itself.
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 If there is no good
00:08:23 --> 00:08:25 and there is no evil
00:08:25 --> 00:08:27 and there is no purpose to it at all,
00:08:27 --> 00:08:30 why is there in the human heart
00:08:30 --> 00:08:32 an instinct to lament
00:08:32 --> 00:08:34 in the face of suffering?
00:08:37 --> 00:08:40 Why has evolution not removed that?
00:08:43 --> 00:08:44 If that's all we are,
00:08:44 --> 00:08:46 byproducts of evolution.
00:08:48 --> 00:08:51 If human sympathy for others
00:08:51 --> 00:08:53 is just simply a byproduct
00:08:53 --> 00:08:55 of evolutionary kinship,
00:08:56 --> 00:08:59 which is evolutionary biologists claim,
00:08:59 --> 00:09:02 then why do we empathise
00:09:03 --> 00:09:03 with the suffering
00:09:03 --> 00:09:06 of those outside of our tribe?
00:09:10 --> 00:09:12 Why do we even empathise
00:09:12 --> 00:09:12 with suffering
00:09:12 --> 00:09:14 even in the natural world?
00:09:17 --> 00:09:19 Especially weaker beings
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 than human beings.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:22 Why do we care about that?
00:09:22 --> 00:09:27 You see, the irony is
00:09:27 --> 00:09:29 that today
00:09:29 --> 00:09:34 at the core of secular humanism
00:09:34 --> 00:09:40 is that they don't actually believe
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 in human beings
00:09:41 --> 00:09:43 any more than they believe
00:09:43 --> 00:09:45 in a creator God.
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 That's the problem
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 with secular humanism.
00:09:48 --> 00:09:51 The secular humanists,
00:09:52 --> 00:09:53 for them,
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 both God
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 and humanity
00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 is a delusion.
00:09:59 --> 00:10:01 When you remove meaning
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 from suffering,
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 it doesn't
00:10:04 --> 00:10:06 solve the problem.
00:10:07 --> 00:10:09 It unravels
00:10:09 --> 00:10:11 our humanity.
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 It unravels
00:10:13 --> 00:10:15 our very sense of self.
00:10:15 --> 00:10:19 secular humanism's
00:10:19 --> 00:10:21 answer to suffering
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 leaves you
00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 with no hope
00:10:24 --> 00:10:24 whatsoever.
00:10:26 --> 00:10:26 Human beings
00:10:26 --> 00:10:28 are nothing more
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 than little kids
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 trying to build
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 sandcastles
00:10:31 --> 00:10:34 in the face
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 of a relentless
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 rising tide.
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 Your life
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 is purposeless.
00:10:39 --> 00:10:45 And so let me just say,
00:10:46 --> 00:10:46 and I say this
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 with all gentleness,
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 but with intention,
00:10:50 --> 00:10:52 if that is your worldview,
00:10:53 --> 00:10:55 if that is your worldview,
00:10:56 --> 00:10:58 and especially right now,
00:10:58 --> 00:11:00 and I say this pastorally to you,
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 if that is your worldview,
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 and right now
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 you are in the face
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 of suffering,
00:11:05 --> 00:11:08 can I please
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 encourage you
00:11:09 --> 00:11:11 in this moment
00:11:11 --> 00:11:13 not to reach
00:11:13 --> 00:11:15 for the placebos
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 of false hope?
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 Too many
00:11:22 --> 00:11:24 who hold to
00:11:24 --> 00:11:26 the secular human worldview
00:11:26 --> 00:11:28 will still say
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 things like
00:11:29 --> 00:11:31 the universe
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 has got some kind
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 of plan in this.
00:11:33 --> 00:11:36 It's not
00:11:36 --> 00:11:38 God's got some kind
00:11:38 --> 00:11:38 of plan,
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 but the universe
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 has got some kind
00:11:40 --> 00:11:40 of plan
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 in my suffering.
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 It's a placebo
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 and nothing more
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 for you
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 in the face
00:11:47 --> 00:11:47 of suffering.
00:11:48 --> 00:11:50 If there is
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 no God
00:11:51 --> 00:11:53 and we still
00:11:53 --> 00:11:53 suffer,
00:11:55 --> 00:11:57 there is
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 no universe
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 to care.
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 There is
00:12:01 --> 00:12:01 no purpose
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 in the universe
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 for your suffering.
00:12:05 --> 00:12:05 There is
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 nothing but
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 blind,
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 pitiless
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 indifference
00:12:09 --> 00:12:09 for you

00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 of your suffering.
00:12:12 --> 00:12:12 And I'm saying
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 this gently.
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 You are doing
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 yourself
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 an enormous
00:12:17 --> 00:12:17 favour
00:12:17 --> 00:12:19 in the midst
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 of your suffering
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 as a secular
00:12:21 --> 00:12:21 humanist
00:12:21 --> 00:12:23 to stare
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 in the abyss
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 of your worldview.
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 Do not reach
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 for placebos.
00:12:29 --> 00:12:29 Stare
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 into the abyss
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 of your worldview
00:12:31 --> 00:12:35 and all
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 of its
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 implications
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 rather than
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 reaching for
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 platitudes
00:12:40 --> 00:12:40 that are
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 inconsistent
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 with your
00:12:42 --> 00:12:42 worldview.
00:12:47 --> 00:12:47 Well,
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 that's
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 one side.
00:12:51 --> 00:12:53 One other
00:12:53 --> 00:12:53 alternative,
00:12:54 --> 00:12:54 one of the
00:12:54 --> 00:12:54 favourite
00:12:54 --> 00:12:55 options
00:12:55 --> 00:12:57 in the
00:12:57 --> 00:12:57 Western world
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 these days,
00:12:58 --> 00:12:59 those who
00:12:59 --> 00:13:00 are dissatisfied
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 with Christianity
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 on the one
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 end,
00:13:03 --> 00:13:04 but not wanting
00:13:04 --> 00:13:04 to jump
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 entirely
00:13:05 --> 00:13:05 into the
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 bleakness
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 of a secular
00:13:07 --> 00:13:07 humanist worldview
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 on the other
00:13:08 --> 00:13:08 end,
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 is to go
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 middle way
00:13:10 --> 00:13:11 and go for
00:13:11 --> 00:13:11 Buddhism
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 and its
00:13:12 --> 00:13:12 response
00:13:12 --> 00:13:14 of suffering.
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 Buddhism's
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 response
00:13:16 --> 00:13:16 to the
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 inevitability
00:13:17 --> 00:13:17 of suffering
00:13:17 --> 00:13:19 is to
00:13:19 --> 00:13:21 break the
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 ties of
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 attachment
00:13:23 --> 00:13:25 that bind
00:13:25 --> 00:13:25 us to
00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 life.

00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 words,
00:13:28 --> 00:13:28 in Buddhism,

00:13:30 --> 00:13:30 is to be
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 vulnerable
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 and to be
00:13:32 --> 00:13:32 vulnerable
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 is to
00:13:33 --> 00:13:33 hurt.
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 To desire
00:13:36 --> 00:13:36 and to
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 strive for
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 things is
00:13:38 --> 00:13:38 to risk
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 disappointment.
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 I won't
00:13:42 --> 00:13:42 go into
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 unpacking
00:13:43 --> 00:13:43 it all,
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 but again,
00:13:45 --> 00:13:45 you end up

00:13:45 --> 00:13:46 same problem.

00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 potential

00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 suffering.

00:14:45 --> 00:14:46 as hope

00:14:46 --> 00:14:46 future

00:14:47 --> 00:14:47 midst
00:14:47 --> 00:14:47 of that
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 suffering.

00:16:51 --> 00:16:51 financial

00:16:52 --> 00:16:53 goes on
00:16:53 --> 00:16:53 and on
00:16:53 --> 00:16:54 and on.

00:16:55 --> 00:16:55 Testament, the

00:16:56 --> 00:16:57 as idolatry.

00:17:11 --> 00:17:12 is, that's
00:17:12 --> 00:17:13 what we trust.
00:17:13 --> 00:17:13 That's where
00:17:13 --> 00:17:14 our faith is.
00:17:16 --> 00:17:17 They can even
00:17:17 --> 00:17:17 be great
00:17:17 --> 00:17:18 things.
00:17:18 --> 00:17:21 But we
00:17:21 --> 00:17:22 overinvest
00:17:22 --> 00:17:23 our hearts
00:17:23 --> 00:17:24 in them
00:17:24 --> 00:17:25 and they
00:17:25 --> 00:17:25 become things
00:17:25 --> 00:17:26 that we
00:17:26 --> 00:17:26 hope in.
00:17:28 --> 00:17:29 And whenever
00:17:29 --> 00:17:30 any of those
00:17:30 --> 00:17:30 things, whatever
00:17:30 --> 00:17:31 it might be
00:17:31 --> 00:17:31 for us,

00:17:40 --> 00:17:40 fragile because
00:17:40 --> 00:17:41 the things
00:17:41 --> 00:17:44 that we have
00:17:44 --> 00:17:45 our trust in
00:17:45 --> 00:17:47 are so
00:17:47 --> 00:17:48 fragile.
00:17:49 --> 00:17:50 Their
00:17:50 --> 00:17:50 impurities
00:17:50 --> 00:17:51 rising to
00:17:51 --> 00:17:52 the surface.
00:17:54 --> 00:17:54 They're
00:17:54 --> 00:17:55 fragile because
00:17:55 --> 00:17:55 everything in
00:17:55 --> 00:17:56 this world is
00:17:56 --> 00:17:56 fragile.
00:17:58 --> 00:17:58 And the
00:17:58 --> 00:17:59 furnace of
00:17:59 --> 00:18:00 life, suffering,
00:18:00 --> 00:18:01 rises to the
00:18:01 --> 00:18:02 surface, the
00:18:02 --> 00:18:03 fragility of
00:18:03 --> 00:18:04 what we have
00:18:04 --> 00:18:04 put our hope
00:18:04 --> 00:18:05 in.
00:18:06 --> 00:18:07 The furnace of
00:18:07 --> 00:18:08 life shows us
00:18:08 --> 00:18:09 just how little
00:18:09 --> 00:18:10 we actually
00:18:10 --> 00:18:12 trust in
00:18:12 --> 00:18:12 Jesus Christ.
00:18:12 --> 00:18:20 suffering shows
00:18:20 --> 00:18:20 us that
00:18:20 --> 00:18:23 his love

00:18:24 --> 00:18:24 power is

00:18:25 --> 00:18:25 real to us.

00:18:28 --> 00:18:28 this happens,
00:18:28 --> 00:18:29 there's really
00:18:29 --> 00:18:30 only two ways
00:18:30 --> 00:18:30 to respond.
00:18:32 --> 00:18:32 Either it's
00:18:32 --> 00:18:33 the case of
00:18:33 --> 00:18:35 God, you
00:18:35 --> 00:18:35 are not
00:18:35 --> 00:18:36 enough for
00:18:36 --> 00:18:36 me right
00:18:36 --> 00:18:38 now, and
00:18:38 --> 00:18:39 I've got to
00:18:39 --> 00:18:40 also have
00:18:40 --> 00:18:40 my wealth,
00:18:41 --> 00:18:42 I've also
00:18:42 --> 00:18:42 got to have
00:18:42 --> 00:18:43 my reputation,
00:18:43 --> 00:18:44 I've got to
00:18:44 --> 00:18:44 have my
00:18:44 --> 00:18:45 beauty, I've
00:18:45 --> 00:18:45 got to have
00:18:45 --> 00:18:46 the accolades,
00:18:47 --> 00:18:47 I've got to
00:18:47 --> 00:18:48 have the
00:18:48 --> 00:18:48 status.
00:18:51 --> 00:18:51 Or it's a
00:18:51 --> 00:18:52 case of
00:18:52 --> 00:18:52 holding on
00:18:52 --> 00:18:53 to God and
00:18:53 --> 00:18:54 asking him
00:18:54 --> 00:18:55 to purify
00:18:55 --> 00:18:56 you so
00:18:56 --> 00:18:57 that he is
00:18:57 --> 00:18:58 your greatest
00:18:58 --> 00:18:59 wealth, he
00:18:59 --> 00:18:59 is your
00:18:59 --> 00:18:59 greatest

00:19:02 --> 00:19:03 is your
00:19:03 --> 00:19:03 acceptance, he

00:19:08 --> 00:19:08 midst of

00:19:09 --> 00:19:10 want to know
00:19:10 --> 00:19:10 you, God,
00:19:11 --> 00:19:12 in a way that
00:19:12 --> 00:19:12 I've never
00:19:12 --> 00:19:13 known you

00:19:18 --> 00:19:18 suffering has
00:19:18 --> 00:19:19 the potential

00:19:26 --> 00:19:26 you a far
00:19:26 --> 00:19:28 more self-knowledge
00:19:28 --> 00:19:29 than you've
00:19:29 --> 00:19:30 ever had
00:19:30 --> 00:19:30 before.
00:19:31 --> 00:19:31 Suffering
00:19:31 --> 00:19:32 teaches you
00:19:32 --> 00:19:32 not to
00:19:32 --> 00:19:33 over-invest
00:19:33 --> 00:19:34 your heart
00:19:34 --> 00:19:35 into good
00:19:35 --> 00:19:36 things in
00:19:36 --> 00:19:36 such a way
00:19:36 --> 00:19:37 that they
00:19:37 --> 00:19:37 become ultimate

00:19:39 --> 00:19:40 significantly
00:19:40 --> 00:19:42 enhances your
00:19:42 --> 00:19:43 experience of
00:19:43 --> 00:19:44 God's love
00:19:44 --> 00:19:44 in his
00:19:44 --> 00:19:45 presence.
00:19:45 --> 00:19:45 Suffering
00:19:45 --> 00:19:46 makes you
00:19:46 --> 00:19:47 more wise
00:19:47 --> 00:19:48 and compassionate,
00:19:49 --> 00:19:50 loving and
00:19:50 --> 00:19:50 generally,
00:19:51 --> 00:19:52 and might I

00:21:26 --> 00:21:27 truthfulness

00:21:51 --> 00:21:52 mumbo-jumbo,

00:21:53 --> 00:21:54 would not be
00:21:54 --> 00:21:55 to make life
00:21:55 --> 00:21:56 delectable,
00:21:56 --> 00:21:57 but to make
00:21:57 --> 00:21:58 it so banal
00:21:58 --> 00:21:59 and trivial
00:21:59 --> 00:22:01 to be
00:22:01 --> 00:22:01 endurable.
