00:00:10 --> 00:00:13 the young Spider-Man has a chance to stop a thief,
00:00:14 --> 00:00:17 but instead chooses to let him go.
00:00:18 --> 00:00:24 He lets him get away only for that thief to end up killing his uncle.
00:00:24 --> 00:00:28 I'm sorry if I've spoiled the movie for you, but the movie's 18 years old, it's okay.
00:00:28 --> 00:00:31 Spider-Man has this moment when he realizes,
00:00:32 --> 00:00:35 oh no, what have I done?
00:00:36 --> 00:00:40 And for the rest of his life, it is shaped by his guilt,
00:00:41 --> 00:00:45 trying to make up for this mistake that cost his uncle's life,
00:00:45 --> 00:00:49 trying to deal with his sin, trying to find redemption.
00:00:49 --> 00:00:56 His whole superhero future is because he is trying to pay the cost of his past sins.
00:00:56 --> 00:00:59 Have you felt that before?
00:00:59 --> 00:01:02 Not the being bitten by a radioactive spider part,
00:01:02 --> 00:01:09 but that gut-wrenching feeling of realizing that you are at fault.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:11 You've let a friend down.
00:01:12 --> 00:01:16 You've been responsible for hurting a person close to you.
00:01:16 --> 00:01:18 And then thinking, how do I fix this?
00:01:19 --> 00:01:22 How do I make amends for my mistake?
00:01:22 --> 00:01:26 Like, you know, I've let my kids down, so I'm going to take them some sliced fruit.
00:01:26 --> 00:01:28 I'm going to, oh, let's go to Macca's kids.
00:01:29 --> 00:01:32 I'm going to buy her flowers.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:33 I'm going to buy her jewelry.
00:01:33 --> 00:01:36 So when I go and say, sorry, I've got something to give her,
00:01:36 --> 00:01:37 so that she'll actually forgive me.
00:01:37 --> 00:01:41 When it comes to our relationship with God,
00:01:41 --> 00:01:45 what happens when we realize what we have done to God?
00:01:46 --> 00:01:50 That we are responsible for the death of his son,
00:01:50 --> 00:01:53 for the murder of God himself.
00:01:53 --> 00:01:55 Is it just enough for us to say sorry?
00:01:57 --> 00:01:59 The great reformer, Martin Luther,
00:01:59 --> 00:02:04 was famously so worried about his guilt and his death
00:02:04 --> 00:02:06 that he became a monk.
00:02:07 --> 00:02:08 Is this what we should do?
00:02:08 --> 00:02:12 We should all, you know, just enter ministry
00:02:12 --> 00:02:14 so we can somehow pay for our sins.
00:02:16 --> 00:02:19 Today we are continuing in our series on the book of Acts,
00:02:19 --> 00:02:23 seeing what living in the new world looks like.
00:02:24 --> 00:02:28 And today we see what apology is.
00:02:28 --> 00:02:29 We see a new repentance.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:35 The people in Jerusalem realize what they have done to Jesus
00:02:35 --> 00:02:37 and they are cut to the heart.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:41 And we see what it means to repent,
00:02:41 --> 00:02:43 to say sorry and to be forgiven.
00:02:44 --> 00:02:47 Today we'll see what to do when we have that,
00:02:47 --> 00:02:50 oh no, what have I done moment.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:54 And we'll be reminded what it means to repent
00:02:54 --> 00:02:57 and how wonderful it is to have a God
00:02:57 --> 00:03:00 who deals with our sin once and for all.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:04 We're going to be three points this morning.
00:03:04 --> 00:03:08 The first is seeing the requirements for repentance.
00:03:10 --> 00:03:13 So the disciples have done what Jesus told them to do
00:03:13 --> 00:03:14 in Acts chapter one.
00:03:14 --> 00:03:18 They were told to wait in Jerusalem until Pentecost.
00:03:19 --> 00:03:20 And they've done that.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:23 Pentecost means 50.
00:03:23 --> 00:03:28 And so Pentecost is 50 days after Passover,
00:03:28 --> 00:03:31 a famous Jewish festival, Passover,
00:03:31 --> 00:03:34 when they remembered what God did passing over their sins.
00:03:35 --> 00:03:39 50 days after that is 7 times 7 plus 1,
00:03:40 --> 00:03:43 which is where they get 50, the Pentecost from.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:46 And so we see what happens on this day.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:48 Acts chapter 2, verse 2.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:53 Suddenly, a sound like the blowing of a violent wind
00:03:53 --> 00:03:56 came from heaven and filled the whole house
00:03:56 --> 00:03:56 where they were sitting.
00:03:57 --> 00:04:00 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated
00:04:00 --> 00:04:02 and came to rest on each of them.
00:04:02 --> 00:04:04 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit
00:04:04 --> 00:04:06 and began to speak in other tongues
00:04:06 --> 00:04:07 as the Spirit enabled them.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:11 This is a massive, dramatic moment
00:04:11 --> 00:04:13 in the history of the church.
00:04:13 --> 00:04:15 This was not just a simple breeze
00:04:15 --> 00:04:16 that blew through the house,
00:04:16 --> 00:04:18 but it is a violent wind.
00:04:19 --> 00:04:20 In the Old Testament,
00:04:20 --> 00:04:23 the word for the Spirit and wind
00:04:23 --> 00:04:24 are the same word.
00:04:24 --> 00:04:25 It's ruach.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:27 It's the same word.
00:04:27 --> 00:04:28 And so we see in the Old Testament
00:04:28 --> 00:04:31 that God made Adam come to life
00:04:31 --> 00:04:32 by breathing into him.
00:04:33 --> 00:04:35 And this rushing wind
00:04:35 --> 00:04:38 is God's life-giving Spirit
00:04:38 --> 00:04:39 coming to the apostles.
00:04:40 --> 00:04:42 We see tongues of fire
00:04:42 --> 00:04:43 coming to rest on these men.
00:04:43 --> 00:04:46 And again, fire is a common image of God.
00:04:46 --> 00:04:48 You only have to think back to, you know,
00:04:48 --> 00:04:49 Moses and the burning bush.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:52 And so the Holy Spirit
00:04:52 --> 00:04:54 comes upon these men
00:04:54 --> 00:04:55 so that they could be
00:04:55 --> 00:04:57 about God's mission.
00:04:58 --> 00:05:00 Last week with Steve,
00:05:00 --> 00:05:00 in chapter 1,
00:05:00 --> 00:05:02 we saw that Jesus was sending
00:05:02 --> 00:05:03 his disciples,
00:05:04 --> 00:05:04 his apostles,
00:05:04 --> 00:05:05 out into the world.
00:05:06 --> 00:05:06 To Jerusalem,
00:05:07 --> 00:05:07 Judea,
00:05:08 --> 00:05:09 Samaria,
00:05:09 --> 00:05:10 and to the ends of the earth.
00:05:10 --> 00:05:12 But he wasn't going to send them out
00:05:12 --> 00:05:14 unprepared or unequipped.
00:05:15 --> 00:05:17 They would have the Holy Spirit.
00:05:18 --> 00:05:19 They were a witness
00:05:19 --> 00:05:20 to what they had seen
00:05:20 --> 00:05:21 about Jesus,
00:05:21 --> 00:05:23 equipped to share the good news
00:05:23 --> 00:05:25 to the ends of the earth.
00:05:26 --> 00:05:28 And the Holy Spirit fills them here
00:05:28 --> 00:05:29 so that they begin
00:05:29 --> 00:05:30 to speak in other languages.
00:05:30 --> 00:05:32 And I love this part of the Bible.
00:05:32 --> 00:05:34 If you've heard me speak
00:05:34 --> 00:05:35 about this kind of thing before,
00:05:35 --> 00:05:37 I've prayed for this
00:05:37 --> 00:05:38 because I really want to be able
00:05:38 --> 00:05:39 to speak Mandarin Chinese.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:42 And learning it takes time.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 And I really wish
00:05:45 --> 00:05:46 that had happened to me.
00:05:46 --> 00:05:47 But here it happens.
00:05:48 --> 00:05:51 God miraculously gifts these people
00:05:51 --> 00:05:52 so that they can speak
00:05:52 --> 00:05:53 other languages.
00:05:53 --> 00:05:54 And they're speaking
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 about God's mighty deeds.
00:05:57 --> 00:05:59 And they're making such a commotion
00:05:59 --> 00:06:00 about God in other languages
00:06:00 --> 00:06:01 that people around them
00:06:01 --> 00:06:02 hear and gather.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:04 Verse 5.
00:06:04 --> 00:06:07 Now, they were staying in Jerusalem
00:06:07 --> 00:06:08 God-fearing Jews
00:06:08 --> 00:06:10 from every nation under heaven.
00:06:11 --> 00:06:12 When they heard this sound,
00:06:13 --> 00:06:14 a crowd came together
00:06:14 --> 00:06:15 in bewilderment
00:06:15 --> 00:06:17 because each one heard
00:06:17 --> 00:06:18 their own language being spoken.
00:06:19 --> 00:06:20 Utterly amazed,
00:06:20 --> 00:06:20 they asked,
00:06:20 --> 00:06:22 aren't all these
00:06:22 --> 00:06:23 who are speaking Galileans?
00:06:25 --> 00:06:26 Luke, the author,
00:06:26 --> 00:06:27 is making a real point
00:06:27 --> 00:06:28 in verse 5
00:06:28 --> 00:06:30 explaining that there were
00:06:30 --> 00:06:31 God-fearing Jews
00:06:31 --> 00:06:33 from every nation
00:06:33 --> 00:06:34 under heaven
00:06:34 --> 00:06:35 in Jerusalem.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 They were there
00:06:36 --> 00:06:37 because of the religious festivals,
00:06:37 --> 00:06:38 Passover,
00:06:38 --> 00:06:39 and then Pentecost.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 And the story
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 of the Old Testament
00:06:42 --> 00:06:44 from the Tower of Babel
00:06:44 --> 00:06:46 all of the way through
00:06:46 --> 00:06:46 to their exile
00:06:46 --> 00:06:48 had been a history
00:06:48 --> 00:06:49 of disobedience.
00:06:50 --> 00:06:51 They disobeyed God
00:06:51 --> 00:06:52 over and over.
00:06:53 --> 00:06:55 And he scattered them
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 at the Tower of Babel.
00:06:56 --> 00:06:57 He sent them into exile
00:06:58 --> 00:06:59 in their history.
00:06:59 --> 00:07:01 Those who should have been
00:07:01 --> 00:07:03 living in the promised land
00:07:03 --> 00:07:04 had been spread
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 across the known world.
00:07:06 --> 00:07:07 They've grown up
00:07:07 --> 00:07:08 in foreign countries
00:07:08 --> 00:07:10 speaking languages
00:07:10 --> 00:07:11 not their own,
00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 but they are all gathered
00:07:13 --> 00:07:15 for Pentecost
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 and for Passover.
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 And God uses
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 his disciples
00:07:18 --> 00:07:20 to speak to his
00:07:20 --> 00:07:20 scattered people
00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 who have gathered
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 for this moment.
00:07:23 --> 00:07:24 The Holy Spirit
00:07:24 --> 00:07:25 brings unity
00:07:25 --> 00:07:27 where there was division.
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 The list of people
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 that had gathered
00:07:30 --> 00:07:31 was impressive.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 Verse 9.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 Parthians, Medes,
00:07:34 --> 00:07:34 Elamites,
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 residents of Mesopotamia,
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 Judea, Cappadocia,
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 Pontus, Asia,
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 Phrygia, Pamphylia,
00:07:39 --> 00:07:40 Egypt,
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 parts of Libya
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 near Cyrene,
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 visitors from Rome,
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 both Jews and converts,
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 Cretans and Arabs.
00:07:47 --> 00:07:48 We hear them
00:07:48 --> 00:07:50 declaring the wonders
00:07:50 --> 00:07:51 of God
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 in our own language.
00:07:53 --> 00:07:53 Have you ever had
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 that feeling
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 when you're on
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 holidays overseas
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 if you can remember
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 being what overseas
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 is like?
00:07:59 --> 00:08:01 And you have this moment
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 in a non-English
00:08:02 --> 00:08:02 speaking country
00:08:02 --> 00:08:03 if that's your
00:08:03 --> 00:08:04 first language
00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 where you don't
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 understand
00:08:07 --> 00:08:08 what everyone's
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 saying around you.
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 It feels very foreign
00:08:10 --> 00:08:12 because it is.
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 And then off in the distance
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 you hear someone
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 speaking your language.
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 You hear, you know,
00:08:17 --> 00:08:17 someone speaking English
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 if you're in a non-English
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 speaking country
00:08:19 --> 00:08:19 and it's just like,
00:08:19 --> 00:08:20 oh,
00:08:21 --> 00:08:22 they will understand me.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 They know
00:08:24 --> 00:08:25 what it is like.
00:08:26 --> 00:08:26 And there's just
00:08:26 --> 00:08:28 a feeling of home
00:08:28 --> 00:08:29 and resonance.
00:08:29 --> 00:08:30 I can imagine
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 that for these people.
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 These Jews
00:08:33 --> 00:08:35 whose first language
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 is not
00:08:36 --> 00:08:39 the local language.
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 But now
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 they are hearing
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 the good news
00:08:42 --> 00:08:42 of God
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 in their
00:08:43 --> 00:08:44 own language.
00:08:46 --> 00:08:46 Some
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 just think
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 that they were drunk.
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 But Peter
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 gets up
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 and he speaks.
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 Peter,
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 who had been
00:08:54 --> 00:08:54 very fearful,
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 who had
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 run
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 at the first
00:08:58 --> 00:08:59 side of opposition,
00:08:59 --> 00:09:00 the Holy Spirit
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 not only
00:09:01 --> 00:09:01 has enabled
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 him to speak
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 in other languages,
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 the Holy Spirit
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 fills Peter
00:09:06 --> 00:09:08 and is changing him
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 from being
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 someone who
00:09:10 --> 00:09:10 was fearful
00:09:10 --> 00:09:11 and stuttering
00:09:11 --> 00:09:13 to now
00:09:13 --> 00:09:13 someone who
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 is able to
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 get up in front
00:09:15 --> 00:09:15 of a crowd
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 and preach.
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 And he explains
00:09:17 --> 00:09:18 what is going on.
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 They're not drunk,
00:09:20 --> 00:09:20 it's nine o'clock
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 in the morning,
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 but this
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 is what
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 was prophesied
00:09:24 --> 00:09:24 long ago.
00:09:24 --> 00:09:25 What is happening
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 right now
00:09:26 --> 00:09:26 we have been
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 waiting for
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 for years
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 and years.
00:09:30 --> 00:09:30 And he takes
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 them
00:09:31 --> 00:09:32 step by step
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 to see
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 who Jesus is.
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 And he quotes
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 from the prophet
00:09:36 --> 00:09:36 Joel
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 and from King
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 David.
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 From Joel,
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 in the last days
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 God says,
00:09:42 --> 00:09:42 I will pour
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 my spirit out
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 on all
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 people.
00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 God
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 giving the
00:09:48 --> 00:09:49 Holy Spirit
00:09:49 --> 00:09:49 to all
00:09:49 --> 00:09:49 people.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:50 Again,
00:09:50 --> 00:09:50 this is an
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 amazing
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 dramatic
00:09:52 --> 00:09:52 shift
00:09:52 --> 00:09:52 from the
00:09:52 --> 00:09:53 Old Testament
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 because
00:09:54 --> 00:09:54 previously
00:09:54 --> 00:09:56 God's
00:09:56 --> 00:09:56 Holy Spirit
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 would come
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 upon kings
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 and prophets
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 and a select
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 few.
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 But now
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 the Spirit
00:10:04 --> 00:10:04 is given
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 to young,
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 to old,
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 to male,
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 to female.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:10 Peter is
00:10:10 --> 00:10:10 showing them
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 in this
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 first step
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 that Joel
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 promised that
00:10:14 --> 00:10:14 God would
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 pour out
00:10:15 --> 00:10:15 the Spirit.
00:10:16 --> 00:10:16 And that is
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 exactly what's
00:10:17 --> 00:10:17 happening.
00:10:19 --> 00:10:19 Not only that,
00:10:20 --> 00:10:20 King David
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 said that they
00:10:21 --> 00:10:21 should expect
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 someone better
00:10:22 --> 00:10:22 than King
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 David himself,
00:10:24 --> 00:10:24 someone who
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 would not be
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 abandoned to
00:10:26 --> 00:10:26 the realm
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 of the dead,
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 whose body
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 would not
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 see decay.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 And that's
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 not David.
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 Verse 29,
00:10:34 --> 00:10:34 fellow Israelites,
00:10:35 --> 00:10:35 I can confidently
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 tell you that
00:10:36 --> 00:10:36 the patriarch
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 David died
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 and he was
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 buried and
00:10:39 --> 00:10:39 his tomb
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 is here to
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 this day.
00:10:42 --> 00:10:42 Seeing what
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 was to come,
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 he spoke of
00:10:44 --> 00:10:44 the resurrection
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 of the Messiah,
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 that he was
00:10:47 --> 00:10:47 not abandoned
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 to the realm
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 of the dead,
00:10:49 --> 00:10:49 nor did his
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 body see
00:10:50 --> 00:10:50 decay.
00:10:51 --> 00:10:51 God has
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 raised this
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 Jesus to
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 life and
00:10:54 --> 00:10:54 we are all
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 witnesses of
00:10:55 --> 00:10:55 it.
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 Joel prophesied
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 that the Spirit
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 would come on
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 all people and
00:11:00 --> 00:11:00 you are seeing
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 it.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 David knew
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 that the Lord
00:11:03 --> 00:11:03 and Messiah
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 would die
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 but not see
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 decay and
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 we have seen
00:11:07 --> 00:11:07 it, the
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 apostles have
00:11:08 --> 00:11:08 seen it.
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 And then
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 Peter gets
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 to the point,
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 verse 36,
00:11:14 --> 00:11:14 therefore,
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 let all
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 Israel be
00:11:17 --> 00:11:17 assured of
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 this,
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 God has
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 made this
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 Jesus whom
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 you crucified,
00:11:23 --> 00:11:23 both Lord
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 and Messiah,
00:11:25 --> 00:11:25 the one
00:11:25 --> 00:11:27 you crucified.
00:11:29 --> 00:11:29 He is the
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 Lord and
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 he is the
00:11:31 --> 00:11:31 Messiah.
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 And the
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 crowd have
00:11:34 --> 00:11:34 that,
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 oh no,
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 what have
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 we done
00:11:38 --> 00:11:38 moment.

00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 new church.
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 There is
00:14:22 --> 00:14:22 nothing that
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 they could do
00:14:23 --> 00:14:23 to make up for
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 their sins,
00:14:24 --> 00:14:25 but forgiveness
00:14:25 --> 00:14:26 is offered,
00:14:27 --> 00:14:27 and they
00:14:27 --> 00:14:28 have a gift
00:14:28 --> 00:14:28 given.
00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 The Holy
00:14:30 --> 00:14:31 Spirit, God
00:14:31 --> 00:14:31 himself would
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 dwell in
00:14:32 --> 00:14:32 them.

00:14:42 --> 00:14:43 getting a gift
00:14:43 --> 00:14:44 instead.
00:14:45 --> 00:14:46 This is
00:14:46 --> 00:14:47 wonderful joy,
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 this is
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 amazing freedom.
00:14:49 --> 00:14:51 We see this
00:14:51 --> 00:14:53 structure in
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 chapter 2,
00:14:54 --> 00:14:55 where God
00:14:55 --> 00:14:56 works a
00:14:56 --> 00:14:56 miracle.
00:14:58 --> 00:14:59 Somebody
00:14:59 --> 00:15:00 preaches the
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 gospel, and
00:15:01 --> 00:15:02 then thousands
00:15:02 --> 00:15:03 get saved.
00:15:03 --> 00:15:03 It is the
00:15:03 --> 00:15:04 same that
00:15:04 --> 00:15:05 happens in
00:15:05 --> 00:15:05 chapter 3.
00:15:06 --> 00:15:06 A miracle
00:15:06 --> 00:15:08 happens, Peter
00:15:08 --> 00:15:08 preaches the
00:15:08 --> 00:15:09 gospel, and we
00:15:09 --> 00:15:09 see thousands
00:15:09 --> 00:15:10 get saved.
00:15:12 --> 00:15:13 In chapter 3,
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 the miracle is
00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 a lame man
00:15:16 --> 00:15:17 being healed.
00:15:17 --> 00:15:17 This is our
00:15:17 --> 00:15:18 second point
00:15:18 --> 00:15:19 today, as
00:15:19 --> 00:15:20 we see the
00:15:20 --> 00:15:20 freedom that
00:15:20 --> 00:15:21 comes from
00:15:21 --> 00:15:22 repentance.
00:15:23 --> 00:15:24 One day,
00:15:25 --> 00:15:26 Peter, along
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 with John, was
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 heading to the
00:15:28 --> 00:15:29 temple, and
00:15:29 --> 00:15:29 there was a
00:15:29 --> 00:15:30 lame man
00:15:30 --> 00:15:31 begging.
00:15:32 --> 00:15:32 Expecting to
00:15:32 --> 00:15:33 get money,
00:15:33 --> 00:15:33 verse 6,

00:16:02 --> 00:16:03 jumping and
00:16:03 --> 00:16:04 praising, and
00:16:04 --> 00:16:05 they rush to
00:16:05 --> 00:16:05 Peter and
00:16:05 --> 00:16:05 John.
00:16:06 --> 00:16:06 And again,
00:16:07 --> 00:16:08 Peter gives
00:16:08 --> 00:16:08 context.
00:16:08 --> 00:16:09 He explains,
00:16:09 --> 00:16:10 he preaches
00:16:10 --> 00:16:11 about what God
00:16:11 --> 00:16:11 is doing in
00:16:11 --> 00:16:12 their midst.
00:16:12 --> 00:16:13 God
00:16:13 --> 00:16:14 is doing in
00:16:14 --> 00:16:14 the name of
00:16:14 --> 00:16:15 Jesus.
00:16:15 --> 00:16:15 Why do you
00:16:15 --> 00:16:16 stare at us as if by
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 our own power or
00:16:17 --> 00:16:19 our godliness we had
00:16:19 --> 00:16:20 made this man walk?
00:16:20 --> 00:16:21 The God of Abraham,
00:16:22 --> 00:16:23 Isaac, and Jacob, the
00:16:23 --> 00:16:24 God of our fathers has
00:16:24 --> 00:16:25 glorified his servant
00:16:25 --> 00:16:26 Jesus.
00:16:26 --> 00:16:27 Verse 15,
00:16:28 --> 00:16:31 you killed the author
00:16:31 --> 00:16:34 of life, but God
00:16:34 --> 00:16:35 raised him from the
00:16:35 --> 00:16:35 dead.
00:16:36 --> 00:16:37 We are witness of
00:16:37 --> 00:16:37 this.
00:16:37 --> 00:16:38 By faith in the
00:16:38 --> 00:16:39 name of Jesus, this
00:16:39 --> 00:16:41 man whom you see and
00:16:41 --> 00:16:42 know has been made
00:16:42 --> 00:16:42 strong.
00:16:43 --> 00:16:45 It is Jesus' name and
00:16:45 --> 00:16:46 the faith that comes
00:16:46 --> 00:16:47 through him that has
00:16:47 --> 00:16:48 completely healed him,
00:16:49 --> 00:16:50 as you can all see.
00:16:51 --> 00:16:52 And again, Peter gets
00:16:52 --> 00:16:53 to the point.
00:16:53 --> 00:16:54 He doesn't just talk
00:16:54 --> 00:16:55 about God just to
00:16:55 --> 00:16:57 talk about him, but
00:16:57 --> 00:16:59 talks about him,
00:16:59 --> 00:17:01 theologizes about him
00:17:01 --> 00:17:02 for the sake of
00:17:02 --> 00:17:03 people's lives.
00:17:03 --> 00:17:03 Verse 19,
00:17:04 --> 00:17:06 repent and turn to
00:17:06 --> 00:17:07 God.
00:17:07 --> 00:17:09 So that your sins
00:17:09 --> 00:17:10 may be wiped out,
00:17:11 --> 00:17:12 that times of
00:17:12 --> 00:17:14 refreshing may come
00:17:14 --> 00:17:15 from the Lord.
00:17:16 --> 00:17:17 This is a wonderful

00:17:30 --> 00:17:32 like a physical
00:17:32 --> 00:17:33 illustration of
00:17:33 --> 00:17:33 repentance.
00:17:33 --> 00:17:35 I don't think it's
00:17:35 --> 00:17:36 by coincidence that
00:17:36 --> 00:17:37 coincidence that
00:17:37 --> 00:17:38 this story is in
00:17:38 --> 00:17:40 the middle of
00:17:40 --> 00:17:41 Peter preaching

00:17:41 --> 00:17:42 repentance.
00:17:43 --> 00:17:45 God's spirit
00:17:45 --> 00:17:46 works in Jesus'
00:17:46 --> 00:17:48 name to set

00:17:51 --> 00:17:52 The lame man was

00:18:07 --> 00:18:08 the author of
00:18:08 --> 00:18:10 life, but you
00:18:10 --> 00:18:10 can be free.

00:18:11 --> 00:18:12 as this man here
00:18:12 --> 00:18:14 jumping with joy,
00:18:14 --> 00:18:15 so repent.
00:18:17 --> 00:18:18 And at the start
00:18:18 --> 00:18:18 of chapter 4,
00:18:19 --> 00:18:19 which we'll look at
00:18:19 --> 00:18:20 next week,
00:18:20 --> 00:18:21 again, we see
00:18:21 --> 00:18:22 thousands of
00:18:22 --> 00:18:24 people are saved.
00:18:24 --> 00:18:27 in chapter 2

00:18:28 --> 00:18:29 we've been given
00:18:29 --> 00:18:30 a picture of
00:18:30 --> 00:18:31 what the new
00:18:31 --> 00:18:32 repentance looks
00:18:32 --> 00:18:33 like, that
00:18:33 --> 00:18:34 comes from the
00:18:34 --> 00:18:35 death, the
00:18:35 --> 00:18:35 resurrection, and
00:18:35 --> 00:18:36 the ascension of
00:18:36 --> 00:18:37 Jesus.
00:18:39 --> 00:18:39 Our repentance
00:18:39 --> 00:18:41 is based not on
00:18:41 --> 00:18:42 what we offer, but
00:18:42 --> 00:18:43 on the completed
00:18:43 --> 00:18:44 works of Jesus.
00:18:45 --> 00:18:46 And we can jump,
00:18:46 --> 00:18:48 we can praise,
00:18:48 --> 00:18:49 and we can be
00:18:49 --> 00:18:50 refreshed,
00:18:51 --> 00:18:52 because our God
00:18:52 --> 00:18:52 forgives us.
00:18:52 --> 00:18:55 There are four
00:18:55 --> 00:18:56 ways that this
00:18:56 --> 00:18:57 helps us to think
00:18:57 --> 00:18:58 through what our
00:18:58 --> 00:18:58 repentance is.
00:18:58 --> 00:18:59 This is our third
00:18:59 --> 00:19:00 point today, what
00:19:00 --> 00:19:02 repentance is, what
00:19:02 --> 00:19:02 it actually looks
00:19:02 --> 00:19:02 like.
00:19:03 --> 00:19:04 So that's the first
00:19:04 --> 00:19:05 of the four things.
00:19:05 --> 00:19:05 We're going to see
00:19:05 --> 00:19:06 four things about
00:19:06 --> 00:19:07 what repentance
00:19:07 --> 00:19:07 looks like.
00:19:08 --> 00:19:10 The first is what
00:19:10 --> 00:19:11 it actually looks
00:19:11 --> 00:19:11 like.
00:19:11 --> 00:19:13 The second, what
00:19:13 --> 00:19:13 the marks of a
00:19:13 --> 00:19:14 repentant person
00:19:14 --> 00:19:14 are.
00:19:15 --> 00:19:16 Third, the
00:19:16 --> 00:19:17 challenges to
00:19:17 --> 00:19:17 repentance.
00:19:18 --> 00:19:18 And the fourth,
00:19:19 --> 00:19:20 the joy from
00:19:20 --> 00:19:21 repentance.
00:19:21 --> 00:19:21 repentance.
00:19:22 --> 00:19:23 Now, if you
00:19:23 --> 00:19:24 don't know Jesus
00:19:24 --> 00:19:25 yet, let me
00:19:25 --> 00:19:26 encourage you to
00:19:26 --> 00:19:28 be reflecting on
00:19:28 --> 00:19:30 the burden of
00:19:30 --> 00:19:31 carrying our own
00:19:31 --> 00:19:32 sin.
00:19:33 --> 00:19:34 Because what God
00:19:34 --> 00:19:36 offers us is joy,
00:19:37 --> 00:19:37 and it is
00:19:37 --> 00:19:38 refreshing.
00:19:39 --> 00:19:41 And all he asks
00:19:41 --> 00:19:41 us to do is to
00:19:41 --> 00:19:42 repent and turn
00:19:42 --> 00:19:43 to him.
00:19:44 --> 00:19:45 So firstly, what
00:19:45 --> 00:19:46 does repentance
00:19:46 --> 00:19:47 look like?
00:19:47 --> 00:19:48 Well, it's not
00:19:48 --> 00:19:49 just saying
00:19:49 --> 00:19:50 sorry.
00:19:51 --> 00:19:52 But repentance
00:19:52 --> 00:19:53 is rooted in an
00:19:53 --> 00:19:54 understanding of
00:19:54 --> 00:19:55 how sinful we
00:19:55 --> 00:19:57 are, of our
00:19:57 --> 00:19:58 actions, our
00:19:58 --> 00:19:59 emotions, our
00:19:59 --> 00:20:00 thoughts, our
00:20:00 --> 00:20:01 beliefs, and our
00:20:01 --> 00:20:02 way of life.
00:20:03 --> 00:20:04 Repentance is
00:20:04 --> 00:20:05 where we have a
00:20:05 --> 00:20:06 high view of
00:20:06 --> 00:20:07 God, where we
00:20:07 --> 00:20:09 see that he is
00:20:09 --> 00:20:09 the one who
00:20:09 --> 00:20:10 dictates what
00:20:10 --> 00:20:12 the best life
00:20:12 --> 00:20:13 is.
00:20:13 --> 00:20:15 and when we
00:20:15 --> 00:20:16 see that our

00:21:20 --> 00:21:22 We see them, we
00:21:22 --> 00:21:22 see the crowd
00:21:22 --> 00:21:24 asking, what
00:21:24 --> 00:21:24 should we do?
00:21:26 --> 00:21:26 A mark of a
00:21:26 --> 00:21:27 repentant person
00:21:27 --> 00:21:28 is that they are
00:21:28 --> 00:21:29 appalled by their
00:21:29 --> 00:21:29 sin.

00:23:04 --> 00:23:05 is really hard.
00:23:06 --> 00:23:07 And that's the
00:23:07 --> 00:23:08 third thing we see
00:23:08 --> 00:23:08 about repentance
00:23:08 --> 00:23:09 here.
00:23:10 --> 00:23:11 Repenting is
00:23:11 --> 00:23:11 challenging.
00:23:12 --> 00:23:13 And it's actually
00:23:13 --> 00:23:13 really challenging
00:23:13 --> 00:23:15 for us to deal
00:23:15 --> 00:23:16 with our sin and
00:23:16 --> 00:23:17 to understand its
00:23:17 --> 00:23:18 consequences.
00:23:19 --> 00:23:20 It's painful.
00:23:21 --> 00:23:21 And this is why
00:23:21 --> 00:23:23 we need God to
00:23:23 --> 00:23:23 help us.
00:23:23 --> 00:23:24 This is why
00:23:24 --> 00:23:26 this repentance
00:23:26 --> 00:23:27 is new because
00:23:27 --> 00:23:28 it comes as a
00:23:28 --> 00:23:28 gift from God.
