00:00:11 --> 00:00:13 You don't really need to tell me what to do.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:16 I know how to take care of myself.
00:00:17 --> 00:00:20 It's been fascinating watching people's response
00:00:20 --> 00:00:22 to the medical recommendations
00:00:22 --> 00:00:25 and directions about social distancing,
00:00:26 --> 00:00:29 staying home, sanitizing hands, wearing masks.
00:00:30 --> 00:00:32 Some people want to ignore everything.
00:00:32 --> 00:00:33 It's that attitude of,
00:00:34 --> 00:00:36 I don't care about your authority.
00:00:37 --> 00:00:38 I don't want to wear a mask.
00:00:38 --> 00:00:39 It's uncomfortable.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:41 I want to make decisions for myself.
00:00:42 --> 00:00:44 And there is a temptation to think
00:00:44 --> 00:00:47 that these directives don't apply to me.
00:00:48 --> 00:00:51 I'm the power and authority over my life.
00:00:51 --> 00:00:54 I'll make up my mind when you show me the evidence.
00:00:55 --> 00:01:01 And I feel this pull about whether I'll make up my mind,
00:01:01 --> 00:01:03 whether I'll be the one that makes decisions for me.
00:01:03 --> 00:01:05 I feel this battle.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:09 But I'm wearing this mask not because I've done the study,
00:01:09 --> 00:01:11 not because I have researched it
00:01:11 --> 00:01:14 and found how helpful masks are,
00:01:14 --> 00:01:15 but because I'm trusting other people
00:01:15 --> 00:01:19 when they recommend that it is best to keep ourselves safe
00:01:19 --> 00:01:20 and to protect other people.
00:01:20 --> 00:01:23 Also, after shaving off my beard this week,
00:01:23 --> 00:01:25 I've found the mask is actually really warm on my face.
00:01:26 --> 00:01:27 It's been a little bit cold recently.
00:01:29 --> 00:01:30 But we all know the temptation
00:01:30 --> 00:01:35 of watering down Christianity to make it easier.
00:01:35 --> 00:01:35 That says,
00:01:36 --> 00:01:38 Jesus, I will follow some of your recommendations,
00:01:39 --> 00:01:41 but I will pick and I will choose.
00:01:42 --> 00:01:43 It makes it easier.
00:01:43 --> 00:01:46 It makes it more palatable,
00:01:46 --> 00:01:48 less confronting to other people around me.
00:01:48 --> 00:01:51 I'll continue to be the one that makes the decisions
00:01:51 --> 00:01:52 and has the power,
00:01:52 --> 00:01:55 but Jesus, I'll allow you to advise me.
00:01:56 --> 00:02:00 But when we make Jesus just one of the voices in our life,
00:02:01 --> 00:02:02 Christianity gets watered down
00:02:02 --> 00:02:06 to something that has no real value for us in our lives.
00:02:07 --> 00:02:09 Here in chapter four of the book of Acts,
00:02:10 --> 00:02:13 the apostles Peter and John are threatened
00:02:13 --> 00:02:15 because Jesus is the power
00:02:15 --> 00:02:17 and they are warned to water him down.
00:02:18 --> 00:02:21 Give some authority over to the rulers of the time.
00:02:22 --> 00:02:24 But Jesus has been given all of the power,
00:02:25 --> 00:02:27 all of the authority over the universe,
00:02:27 --> 00:02:28 over our culture,
00:02:28 --> 00:02:30 over the Christianity,
00:02:30 --> 00:02:33 and even over each of our lives.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:37 And there is a very real battle that happened to them,
00:02:37 --> 00:02:38 to Peter and John,
00:02:38 --> 00:02:41 and a very real battle that happens to us now
00:02:41 --> 00:02:43 in the life of the church and in our lives.
00:02:44 --> 00:02:45 Who is in charge?
00:02:46 --> 00:02:48 Is it Jesus or is it me?
00:02:49 --> 00:02:51 Who will I submit to?
00:02:52 --> 00:02:54 As we continue in our series
00:02:54 --> 00:02:57 on looking at living in the new world,
00:02:57 --> 00:03:00 today we're going to see what it means to have new loyalty,
00:03:00 --> 00:03:03 what it means to be loyal to Jesus and to follow him.
00:03:04 --> 00:03:05 First of all, we're going to see today,
00:03:06 --> 00:03:08 we're going to look at Jesus' power and his authority
00:03:08 --> 00:03:11 before we see the call to submit
00:03:11 --> 00:03:16 and then we see the prayer for boldness in this life.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 Please have your Bibles open on your phone
00:03:19 --> 00:03:22 through the St. Paul's app in a physical Bible.
00:03:22 --> 00:03:24 We're in chapter 4.
00:03:25 --> 00:03:26 In chapter 3, at the end,
00:03:26 --> 00:03:30 we saw Peter heal a lame man.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:33 And then he preached to the crowd about repentance.
00:03:33 --> 00:03:36 Repent so you can have times of refreshing
00:03:36 --> 00:03:38 that come from following the Jesus
00:03:38 --> 00:03:39 who was raised from the dead.
00:03:40 --> 00:03:42 And at the start of chapter 4,
00:03:42 --> 00:03:44 the Sadducees with the temple guard
00:03:44 --> 00:03:46 hear Peter's preaching
00:03:46 --> 00:03:48 and they don't think very much of it.
00:03:49 --> 00:03:50 The Sadducees were a Jewish sect
00:03:50 --> 00:03:53 who didn't believe in the resurrection of the dead.
00:03:54 --> 00:03:55 And to deal with this problem,
00:03:55 --> 00:03:57 they arrest Peter and John,
00:03:57 --> 00:03:59 put them in prison because it was night,
00:03:59 --> 00:04:01 and then deal with them the next day.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:04 But despite this persecution,
00:04:04 --> 00:04:07 God is doing amazing things.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:08 Acts chapter 4, verse 4.
00:04:09 --> 00:04:11 But many who heard this message believed,
00:04:12 --> 00:04:16 so the number of men who grew to about 5.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:20 But is only a three-letter, very small word.
00:04:21 --> 00:04:22 But it is very big here.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:25 Despite arrest and persecution,
00:04:26 --> 00:04:28 despite the ruling religious authorities
00:04:28 --> 00:04:32 disagreeing with the preacher and arresting him,
00:04:32 --> 00:04:34 despite the apparent craziness
00:04:34 --> 00:04:36 of believing in the resurrection of the dead,
00:04:37 --> 00:04:38 thousands believe.
00:04:40 --> 00:04:42 It's all because Jesus is working.
00:04:43 --> 00:04:45 Peter and John have been arrested.
00:04:46 --> 00:04:48 The ruling authorities gather the next day,
00:04:48 --> 00:04:48 verse 6.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:50 Annas, the high priest, was there,
00:04:51 --> 00:04:53 and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander,
00:04:53 --> 00:04:55 and others of the high priest's family.
00:04:55 --> 00:04:59 These are the people who saw Jesus put to death.
00:05:00 --> 00:05:03 They did not acknowledge Jesus' position
00:05:03 --> 00:05:06 and his authority as the Son of God,
00:05:06 --> 00:05:08 and so they put him to death.
00:05:10 --> 00:05:10 Verse 7.
00:05:10 --> 00:05:12 They had Peter and John brought before them
00:05:12 --> 00:05:13 and began to question them.
00:05:14 --> 00:05:17 By what power or what name did you do this?
00:05:18 --> 00:05:21 Now, this is more than asking about
00:05:21 --> 00:05:22 how the lame man was healed.
00:05:22 --> 00:05:25 This is a question of power and authority.
00:05:27 --> 00:05:28 By what power or what name?
00:05:29 --> 00:05:30 In the first century,
00:05:30 --> 00:05:33 you didn't have gods that were considered
00:05:33 --> 00:05:36 to be over the whole world
00:05:36 --> 00:05:36 or the whole cosmos.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:39 Gods were considered to be regional.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:42 You had the god of war,
00:05:42 --> 00:05:43 the god of agriculture,
00:05:43 --> 00:05:44 the god of love.
00:05:45 --> 00:05:47 There was the god of Ephesus,
00:05:47 --> 00:05:49 the god of Corinth.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:51 It was a system which said,
00:05:52 --> 00:05:53 everyone is right.
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 Everyone can have their own regional god.
00:05:56 --> 00:05:58 You can follow your god.
00:05:58 --> 00:05:59 That is fine.
00:05:59 --> 00:06:02 It's called religious relativism,
00:06:03 --> 00:06:05 where there is no absolute power.
00:06:05 --> 00:06:07 There is no one religion that is right.
00:06:07 --> 00:06:08 But all of the regions,
00:06:08 --> 00:06:09 they've got their own religion,
00:06:09 --> 00:06:11 and they were all valid.
00:06:11 --> 00:06:14 We see the apostle Paul fight this battle
00:06:14 --> 00:06:16 in Acts chapter 19,
00:06:16 --> 00:06:19 where the silversmith, Demetrius,
00:06:20 --> 00:06:21 was against Paul
00:06:21 --> 00:06:25 because he worshipped the god Artemis,
00:06:26 --> 00:06:27 the god of fertility.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 He was also worried about his job
00:06:29 --> 00:06:29 as a silversmith.
00:06:30 --> 00:06:32 But he was worried about this god
00:06:32 --> 00:06:34 of the region in Ephesus.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:37 Each religion had permission to preach.
00:06:37 --> 00:06:38 They were licensed.
00:06:38 --> 00:06:40 They had authority to preach
00:06:40 --> 00:06:42 under the ruler Caesar.
00:06:43 --> 00:06:43 And in one sense,
00:06:43 --> 00:06:45 he was considered divine
00:06:45 --> 00:06:47 because he was the one ruler
00:06:47 --> 00:06:49 over all of these regions.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:50 He was the one ruler
00:06:50 --> 00:06:52 over all of these regional gods.
00:06:53 --> 00:06:54 And so the religious leaders,
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 the Jewish leaders,
00:06:55 --> 00:06:57 are questioning Peter and John,
00:06:57 --> 00:06:58 likely with the thought
00:06:58 --> 00:06:59 in the back of their minds
00:06:59 --> 00:07:01 that the Romans didn't like them too much.
00:07:02 --> 00:07:04 And they didn't want to see two upstarts
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 like Peter and John causing riots,
00:07:06 --> 00:07:07 causing the Romans
00:07:07 --> 00:07:08 to come down hard on them.
00:07:08 --> 00:07:10 And so the question,
00:07:11 --> 00:07:12 by what name,
00:07:12 --> 00:07:14 by what power do you preach,
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 is much bigger
00:07:16 --> 00:07:18 than just how did this happen.
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 It's a question of loyalty.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:23 It's a question of who do you submit to?
00:07:24 --> 00:07:26 How do we control you?
00:07:27 --> 00:07:30 Peter, full of the Holy Spirit,
00:07:30 --> 00:07:31 answers this question
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 of whose name and power
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 in verse 9.
00:07:33 --> 00:07:37 It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 whom you crucified,
00:07:40 --> 00:07:42 but whom God raised from the dead,
00:07:42 --> 00:07:44 that this man stands before you healed.
00:07:44 --> 00:07:46 Jesus is the stone
00:07:46 --> 00:07:48 you builders rejected,
00:07:48 --> 00:07:50 which has become the cornerstone.
00:07:50 --> 00:07:53 Salvation is found in no one else,
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 for there is no other name
00:07:54 --> 00:07:56 under heaven given to mankind
00:07:56 --> 00:07:58 by which we must be saved.
00:07:58 --> 00:08:01 It is the Jesus that you crucified.
00:08:02 --> 00:08:02 Again,
00:08:03 --> 00:08:04 this is the third time now
00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 that Peter has laid the blame
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 at his listeners' feet.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:09 He's done it with the crowds,
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 saying that they were responsible
00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 for Jesus' death,
00:08:12 --> 00:08:12 and they were.
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 But these
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 are the men
00:08:15 --> 00:08:16 who orchestrated
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 Jesus' death.
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 They were the ones
00:08:19 --> 00:08:20 who were worried
00:08:20 --> 00:08:21 about their own position.
00:08:21 --> 00:08:22 They were jealous
00:08:22 --> 00:08:23 of the crowds
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 that Jesus was getting.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:25 So these
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 were the very men
00:08:26 --> 00:08:26 who were
00:08:26 --> 00:08:27 the ones
00:08:27 --> 00:08:29 who orchestrated it.
00:08:29 --> 00:08:30 And so Peter says,
00:08:30 --> 00:08:32 you crucified Jesus,
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 but God
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 raised him.
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 You threw him away
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 like a piece of garbage,
00:08:38 --> 00:08:38 but God
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 has made him
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 the cornerstone.
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 The cornerstone
00:08:43 --> 00:08:44 marks the
00:08:44 --> 00:08:44 orientation
00:08:44 --> 00:08:46 and location
00:08:46 --> 00:08:46 of a building,
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 and everything
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 is built off it.
00:08:50 --> 00:08:50 Jesus
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 is the first.
00:08:52 --> 00:08:52 Everything
00:08:52 --> 00:08:54 finds its place
00:08:54 --> 00:08:54 from him
00:08:54 --> 00:08:56 and in relation
00:08:56 --> 00:08:56 to him.
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 And Peter
00:08:58 --> 00:08:59 makes an exclusive
00:08:59 --> 00:08:59 claim.
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 Salvation
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 is found
00:09:02 --> 00:09:04 in no one else.
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 It's found
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 nowhere else.
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 He is
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 the way,
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 the only
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 way
00:09:10 --> 00:09:11 to get saved.
00:09:12 --> 00:09:12 And this might
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 seem like a really
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 offensive
00:09:14 --> 00:09:16 and arrogant
00:09:16 --> 00:09:16 claim,
00:09:17 --> 00:09:18 but it is
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 more the
00:09:19 --> 00:09:19 implication
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 of the resurrection
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 and his ascension.
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 If it is
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 really true
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 that Jesus
00:09:24 --> 00:09:24 was raised
00:09:24 --> 00:09:25 from the dead,
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 then he
00:09:27 --> 00:09:27 has been
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 given power
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 above all
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 powers.
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 He is the
00:09:31 --> 00:09:31 cornerstone.
00:09:32 --> 00:09:32 He is the
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 only way
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 to be saved.
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 But this
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 absolute
00:09:37 --> 00:09:39 and ultimate
00:09:39 --> 00:09:39 claim
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 was offensive
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 to the Jewish
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 religious leaders.
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 It was
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 offensive
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 to the other
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 religious leaders
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 and to Caesar,
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 and it
00:09:48 --> 00:09:49 certainly
00:09:49 --> 00:09:49 continues
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 to be
00:09:50 --> 00:09:50 offensive
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 to people
00:09:51 --> 00:09:51 today
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 to say
00:09:52 --> 00:09:52 that Jesus
00:09:52 --> 00:09:53 is the
00:09:53 --> 00:09:53 only
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 power,
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 the only
00:09:55 --> 00:09:55 way
00:09:55 --> 00:09:55 to be
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 saved.
00:09:59 --> 00:09:59 Today
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 in our
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 2020,
00:10:02 --> 00:10:02 that's the year
00:10:02 --> 00:10:02 isn't it?
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 Today in 2020,
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 our culture
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 might not be
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 based on
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 regional gods
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 and regional
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 deities,
00:10:09 --> 00:10:11 but their
00:10:11 --> 00:10:11 claim to
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 absolute
00:10:12 --> 00:10:12 truth
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 that Jesus
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 is the
00:10:14 --> 00:10:14 only
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 power,
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 the only
00:10:16 --> 00:10:16 way you
00:10:16 --> 00:10:16 can be
00:10:16 --> 00:10:16 saved.
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 That claim
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 is still
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 very offensive.
00:10:20 --> 00:10:20 People will
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 say,
00:10:21 --> 00:10:21 oh,
00:10:21 --> 00:10:21 well,
00:10:21 --> 00:10:21 look,
00:10:21 --> 00:10:21 you can
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 believe in
00:10:22 --> 00:10:22 your Jesus,
00:10:23 --> 00:10:23 you can
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 worship him,
00:10:25 --> 00:10:25 but not
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 this
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 cornerstone
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 all-powerful
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 version.
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 That's
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 intolerant
00:10:31 --> 00:10:33 to other
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 people and
00:10:34 --> 00:10:34 the way
00:10:34 --> 00:10:34 of life
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 that they
00:10:35 --> 00:10:35 follow,
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 to say
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 that you
00:10:37 --> 00:10:37 must
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 follow Jesus
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 and he's
00:10:39 --> 00:10:39 the only
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 way to
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 be saved.
00:10:41 --> 00:10:41 That's
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 intolerant.
00:10:43 --> 00:10:43 Can you
00:10:43 --> 00:10:43 please just
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 water down
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 your view
00:10:45 --> 00:10:45 of Jesus
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 until he
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 is the
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 nice and
00:10:48 --> 00:10:48 kind prophet
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 of love
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 version of
00:10:50 --> 00:10:50 Jesus?
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 That's much
00:10:51 --> 00:10:51 more palatable,
00:10:52 --> 00:10:52 that's much
00:10:52 --> 00:10:52 nicer,
00:10:53 --> 00:10:53 it's much
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 less offensive.
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 You have
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 your prophet
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 of love
00:10:57 --> 00:10:57 version of
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 Jesus and
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 everybody else
00:10:59 --> 00:10:59 can have
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 their own
00:11:00 --> 00:11:00 view of
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 God and
00:11:01 --> 00:11:01 it will
00:11:01 --> 00:11:01 be fine.
00:11:02 --> 00:11:02 There's just
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 one problem
00:11:03 --> 00:11:03 with that.
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 That kind
00:11:05 --> 00:11:05 of Jesus
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 doesn't
00:11:06 --> 00:11:06 exist.
00:11:06 --> 00:11:08 the
00:11:08 --> 00:11:08 Jesus
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 we have
00:11:09 --> 00:11:09 in the
00:11:09 --> 00:11:09 Bible
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 is the
00:11:10 --> 00:11:10 same
00:11:10 --> 00:11:10 one
00:11:10 --> 00:11:10 that
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 Peter
00:11:11 --> 00:11:11 is
00:11:11 --> 00:11:11 preaching
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 about.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:12 Either
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 Peter
00:11:13 --> 00:11:13 is
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 right
00:11:14 --> 00:11:14 that
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 Jesus
00:11:15 --> 00:11:15 is
00:11:15 --> 00:11:15 the
00:11:15 --> 00:11:15 name
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 above

00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 no
00:11:21 --> 00:11:21 version
00:11:21 --> 00:11:21 of
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 a
00:11:22 --> 00:11:22 Jesus
00:11:22 --> 00:11:22 in
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 history
00:11:23 --> 00:11:23 who
00:11:23 --> 00:11:23 was
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 just
00:11:24 --> 00:11:24 a
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 prophet
