00:00:05 --> 00:00:12 stories about people who made bad decisions in the present because they had misjudged the future.
00:00:12 --> 00:00:20 ! Stories like the late actor Gary Cooper, who turned down the role of Rhett Butler in the movie Gone
00:00:20 --> 00:00:28 with the Wind because he thought, to quote, it would be a flop as a movie. For those of you not familiar
00:00:28 --> 00:00:37 with Gone with the Wind, adjusted with inflation, it is the highest grossing movie of all time by
00:00:37 --> 00:00:44 over a billion dollars in terms of its gross. All Decker Record Company refused to sign a recording
00:00:44 --> 00:00:50 contract with the Beatles because they thought that guitar music was going out of fashion.
00:00:50 --> 00:00:58 And of course, those who know the Beatles, it's the, again, the most successful band of all time with
00:00:58 --> 00:01:07 somewhere between 600 million and 1 billion album sales. Warner from Warner Brothers fame, who rejected
00:01:07 --> 00:01:16 the idea of adding sound to silent movies because, in his opinion, who the hell wants to hear actors talk?
00:01:16 --> 00:01:28 Bad decisions in the moment are the cause of a miscalculation of the future and what the future holds.
00:01:28 --> 00:01:35 Hindsight is a wonderful thing. For instance, if you knew that somewhere in the back box of Chatswood right now,
00:01:35 --> 00:01:43 there was a small little internet company, let's call it Amazon, was working out of its garage.
00:01:43 --> 00:01:49 And if you knew, for instance, that it would be in 20 years' time, as big as Amazon is now,
00:01:49 --> 00:01:56 what have you done 20 years ago, invested $1 into that company 20 years ago, knowing what the future
00:01:56 --> 00:02:00 would be for that company now? Or electric cars, I mean, who would have thought 30 years ago?
00:02:01 --> 00:02:07 Hindsight's a wonderful thing. It's hard to know what the future actually holds, and yet,
00:02:07 --> 00:02:17 every single person operates day by day, makes the decisions they make on what they perceive the future to be.
00:02:17 --> 00:02:24 That is, humanity, people, us, we are hope-driven. We cannot live without hope.
00:02:25 --> 00:02:33 What we think the future is determines the decisions we make now and how we live right now.
00:02:33 --> 00:02:40 In his 2017 best-selling book, Homo Deus, A Brief History of Tomorrow,
00:02:41 --> 00:02:51 Yuval Noah Harari argues that in ancient times, human beings turned to God or to the gods or to the divine
00:02:51 --> 00:03:01 in some shape or form only in order for their hope, only because they didn't have control of their world.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:06 They were very conscious that they weren't in control of their world and they weren't in control of their future.
00:03:07 --> 00:03:13 And he concludes in the book that with the progress of science and reason and technology,
00:03:13 --> 00:03:19 we no longer need, humanity no longer needs the divine, it no longer needs God.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:23 Humanity, and this is the conclusion of the book, humanity is its own hope.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:27 People can solve all the world's problems.
00:03:27 --> 00:03:36 Within ourselves, all that we need in order to produce a bright and prosperous and flourishing future.
00:03:37 --> 00:03:45 And therefore, the title of the book, which in its Latin, Homo Deus, which is in English, human God.
00:03:47 --> 00:03:54 And so Harari's thinking there is not some new idea that he's come up with, you know, just recently.
00:03:54 --> 00:03:58 It has its origins in what is known as the Age of the Enlightenment.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:09 The Enlightenment Age was an intellectual and a philosophical movement that sort of began in the late 17th century in Europe
00:04:09 --> 00:04:13 and basically to the early 19th century.
00:04:13 --> 00:04:24 It particularly valued reason and scientific fact while questioning every other source of authority
00:04:24 --> 00:04:28 and especially any form of religious authority.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:37 And as a movement, it started to dwindle around the early stage of the 19th century
00:04:37 --> 00:04:47 because it was hard to argue for the supremacy of humanity over all things
00:04:47 --> 00:04:53 and the progress of human history in everything on the back of two world wars,
00:04:53 --> 00:04:59 the Spanish flu pandemic, the Great Depression, and the beginning of the nuclear arms race.
00:04:59 --> 00:05:07 That is, it's hard to argue for the progress of history when you've got that in history.
00:05:08 --> 00:05:18 But at the end of the Cold War in 1989, the idea started to come back into popularity again.
00:05:18 --> 00:05:32 And some declared, in fact, that at the end of 1989, that the Age of Anxiety was now over
00:05:32 --> 00:05:37 and the future of the world was once again in progress
00:05:37 --> 00:05:41 and it will be, we will achieve all that the Enlightenment sought to achieve.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:48 In fact, in the age of when that happened, the end of the Cold War,
00:05:48 --> 00:05:55 more than half of people in the Western world were convinced
00:05:55 --> 00:06:01 that the future for their children and the children that followed them
00:06:01 --> 00:06:04 was going to be much brighter than their own.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:11 More than half of people were totally convinced each generation
00:06:11 --> 00:06:15 will just get better and better and better.
00:06:15 --> 00:06:20 In fact, even in our own history in this country, a former Prime Minister,
00:06:20 --> 00:06:25 by 1990, no Australian children will be living in poverty.
00:06:28 --> 00:06:30 That's the Age of Enlightenment.
00:06:32 --> 00:06:40 And yet, according to a recent Australian National University research survey thing,
00:06:41 --> 00:06:47 Australians are now increasingly pessimistic about the future
00:06:47 --> 00:06:56 and life satisfaction has dropped to its lowest levels since COVID-19 lockdowns.
00:06:58 --> 00:06:59 Lowest levels.
00:07:00 --> 00:07:07 Most Australians now think that the lives of children in 50 years
00:07:07 --> 00:07:11 is going to be worse off than the current generation.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:16 Only one in five Australians think that their life has, in fact,
00:07:16 --> 00:07:20 improved measurably in the last year.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:24 You see, as a sense of uncertainty about the future rises,
00:07:25 --> 00:07:28 and if you're an investor on the stock market,
00:07:28 --> 00:07:30 that uncertainty was certainly there this week.
00:07:30 --> 00:07:36 As that uncertainty about the future rises,
00:07:37 --> 00:07:41 hope decreases, and so does life satisfaction.
00:07:43 --> 00:07:46 And we are hope-driven people.
00:07:46 --> 00:07:49 We need hope to live and to live well.
00:07:49 --> 00:07:56 And so the thing for the next three weeks,
00:07:56 --> 00:07:59 as we have Easter in the middle of it, is hope.
00:08:00 --> 00:08:06 Christian hope is not one of those uncertain,
00:08:07 --> 00:08:11 wishful thinking about the future kind of hopes.
00:08:11 --> 00:08:18 The word that the Bible uses for hope is a word that in its original language
00:08:18 --> 00:08:20 means profound certainty.
00:08:22 --> 00:08:23 Profound certainty.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:32 And this hope of the Christian life centres on the explosive events
00:08:32 --> 00:08:36 of one weekend just 2 years ago
00:08:36 --> 00:08:38 in the death and resurrection of Jesus.
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 The hope, Christian hope,
00:08:41 --> 00:08:45 which has permeated virtually every culture
00:08:45 --> 00:08:48 in the last 2 years
00:08:48 --> 00:08:51 all centres on one weekend.
00:08:51 --> 00:08:55 And so I'd invite you to give me one weekend next weekend
00:08:55 --> 00:08:58 and to find out about this profound certainty.
00:08:58 --> 00:09:00 We're going to touch on it a bit today.
00:09:00 --> 00:09:03 That's where we're heading in the next three weekends
00:09:03 --> 00:09:05 to exploring this hope
00:09:05 --> 00:09:08 and how we live in light of it.
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 So if you've got the St Paul's app,
00:09:09 --> 00:09:11 I've got four points today
00:09:11 --> 00:09:15 as we briefly get introduced into that hope.
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 First one, new hope.
00:09:17 --> 00:09:18 The foundation of the Christian hope
00:09:18 --> 00:09:22 is the mercy of God
00:09:22 --> 00:09:25 in giving us new birth, new life.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:28 So 1 Peter 1.3 that Anne just read out,
00:09:28 --> 00:09:31 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ
00:09:31 --> 00:09:32 in his great mercy.
00:09:33 --> 00:09:36 He's given us new birth into a living hope
00:09:36 --> 00:09:40 through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead
00:09:40 --> 00:09:42 and into an inheritance
00:09:42 --> 00:09:47 that can never perish, spoil or fade.
00:09:48 --> 00:09:51 And this inheritance is kept in heaven for you.
00:09:52 --> 00:09:53 All Christians,
00:09:53 --> 00:09:59 that is everyone who puts their hope in Jesus Christ
00:09:59 --> 00:10:04 are described here as being given a new birth.
00:10:05 --> 00:10:09 That is all are born again.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:15 Not just a certain type of Christian is born again.
00:10:15 --> 00:10:18 Everyone who is a Christian is born again.
00:10:18 --> 00:10:21 We are not told much here
00:10:21 --> 00:10:23 about what the new birth is
00:10:23 --> 00:10:25 that the Christian has received.
00:10:25 --> 00:10:27 We know from other parts of the Bible
00:10:27 --> 00:10:30 that the new birth is a new life.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:32 It's an entire new life.
00:10:32 --> 00:10:34 It's an entire new existence.
00:10:34 --> 00:10:36 It's a new vitality in life.
00:10:37 --> 00:10:39 When a person is born again,
00:10:39 --> 00:10:41 they experience new life.
00:10:41 --> 00:10:44 That is, spiritual life comes into you
00:10:44 --> 00:10:47 and God puts his very life in us.
00:10:48 --> 00:10:52 The life that Jesus now lives is in us.
00:10:54 --> 00:10:56 Now this new birth comes to us in different ways.
00:10:57 --> 00:11:01 There's no type of experience that everyone must have.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:04 And even though it comes to us in different ways,
00:11:05 --> 00:11:07 and it might even be subtle for some,
00:11:08 --> 00:11:12 it is nevertheless astounding, this new birth.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:18 The original New Testament word for it is palagenesia,
00:11:18 --> 00:11:22 which means regeneration.
00:11:23 --> 00:11:29 The book of Titus tells us that when we are born again,
00:11:29 --> 00:11:32 we experience regeneration.
00:11:34 --> 00:11:37 Titus uses that word palagenesia.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:42 In Matthew 19, verse 28, Jesus says this,
00:11:43 --> 00:11:46 Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things,
00:11:46 --> 00:11:49 when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne,
00:11:49 --> 00:11:51 which he's talking about the end of all things,
00:11:52 --> 00:11:54 Jesus is referring to the end of all things,
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 when all things are made new,
00:11:56 --> 00:11:59 the goal of all of his work in history.
00:12:00 --> 00:12:03 He says God's power will come down into this world
00:12:03 --> 00:12:05 and he will renew it, he will make it right.
00:12:05 --> 00:12:08 Everything that is wrong, everything that is stained,
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 everything that is evil,
00:12:09 --> 00:12:12 everything that's deformed, broken in this world,
00:12:12 --> 00:12:15 death and evil and suffering will be gone.
00:12:15 --> 00:12:20 All tears, all sadness, all anxiety will be wiped away.
00:12:20 --> 00:12:24 Despite all the superpowers of this world
00:12:24 --> 00:12:26 and the wealth and the technology of this world,
00:12:26 --> 00:12:33 none of that is enough to bring about this kind of total renewal change.
00:12:34 --> 00:12:40 That is what is required to bring about this kind of change,
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 that kind of power.
00:12:44 --> 00:12:48 And Jesus describes there that this time of renewal
00:12:48 --> 00:12:51 in Matthew 19 as the palagenesia.
00:12:51 --> 00:13:01 And so the Apostle Paul has the audacity to use the same word
00:13:01 --> 00:13:04 to describe the new birth of the Christian.
00:13:06 --> 00:13:09 An entire renewal of an individual.
00:13:11 --> 00:13:15 The tremendous power that renews all things
00:13:15 --> 00:13:19 that will bring an end to all suffering and evil
00:13:19 --> 00:13:22 and make every wrong right,
00:13:22 --> 00:13:26 that tremendous power comes into the life of the Christian now
00:13:26 --> 00:13:28 through faith in Jesus Christ.
00:13:30 --> 00:13:33 And that means on the very surface level,
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 very quickly,
00:13:35 --> 00:13:37 it means that every single Christian
00:13:37 --> 00:13:41 puts up with stuff in their life that they don't need to.
00:13:42 --> 00:13:47 The potential for change in your life right now
00:13:47 --> 00:13:49 is absolutely astounding.
00:13:49 --> 00:13:56 Just go back to our vision series
00:13:56 --> 00:13:58 and the rhythms of grace.
00:14:02 --> 00:14:04 The power to put those into effect
00:14:04 --> 00:14:07 is yours already in Christ.
00:14:07 --> 00:14:14 So when we are born,
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 newborn, new birth,
00:14:16 --> 00:14:19 new hope,
00:14:21 --> 00:14:24 we also are given this hope that we have
00:14:24 --> 00:14:27 is a living hope.
00:14:27 --> 00:14:30 It's a hope that's alive.
00:14:30 --> 00:14:31 When we are born,
00:14:32 --> 00:14:34 like in a natural birth,
00:14:34 --> 00:14:38 we are all identified genetically
00:14:38 --> 00:14:40 as we share the genetic makeup
00:14:40 --> 00:14:42 of our biological parents.
00:14:43 --> 00:14:46 We also inherit an ethnic makeup,
00:14:46 --> 00:14:46 if you like,
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 depending on where we're born,
00:14:48 --> 00:14:53 also likely to have some kind of a national identity as well.
00:14:53 --> 00:14:55 And certainly for the early years of our lives,
00:14:55 --> 00:14:59 we also share the socioeconomic identity of our parents.
00:14:59 --> 00:15:00 That is,
00:15:01 --> 00:15:05 our birth identifies us in some measure.
00:15:06 --> 00:15:07 When a person becomes a Christian,
00:15:08 --> 00:15:09 they receive the new birth,
00:15:10 --> 00:15:13 it becomes their greatest identity marker.
00:15:14 --> 00:15:17 It doesn't change who we are in all our ethnic,
00:15:17 --> 00:15:20 national, genetic, socioeconomic markers,
00:15:20 --> 00:15:24 but it does change our lives
00:15:24 --> 00:15:25 in such a way
00:15:25 --> 00:15:29 that we are fundamentally different people.
00:15:30 --> 00:15:32 The reason the new birth
00:15:32 --> 00:15:35 changes us so much
00:15:35 --> 00:15:40 is because it changes our hope.
00:15:42 --> 00:15:44 It's a new hope.
00:15:44 --> 00:15:45 It's a living hope,
00:15:46 --> 00:15:47 a certain hope,
00:15:47 --> 00:15:48 a very different hope.
00:15:48 --> 00:15:49 You see,
00:15:49 --> 00:15:52 if you change a person's hope,
00:15:53 --> 00:15:55 you change their lives.
00:15:58 --> 00:16:00 Back to verse 3 again.
00:16:00 --> 00:16:01 Praise be the God and Father
00:16:01 --> 00:16:03 of our Lord Jesus Christ
00:16:03 --> 00:16:04 and his great mercy
00:16:04 --> 00:16:05 has given us a new birth
00:16:05 --> 00:16:08 into a living hope
00:16:08 --> 00:16:12 through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead
00:16:12 --> 00:16:14 and into an inheritance
00:16:14 --> 00:16:17 that can never perish,
00:16:18 --> 00:16:18 spoil,
00:16:19 --> 00:16:20 or fade.
00:16:21 --> 00:16:24 No hacker can come into your super account
00:16:24 --> 00:16:26 and remove it.
00:16:28 --> 00:16:32 This inheritance is kept in heaven for you.
00:16:33 --> 00:16:36 The direction of every person's life
00:16:36 --> 00:16:39 is set by what they hope in the most.
00:16:39 --> 00:16:42 So if you can offer a person
00:16:42 --> 00:16:45 a life-giving,
00:16:45 --> 00:16:47 imperishable hope,
00:16:47 --> 00:16:50 then their life is changed forever.
00:16:51 --> 00:16:55 Now, all of us have certain desires,
00:16:55 --> 00:16:56 hopes, expectations.
00:16:58 --> 00:17:01 There are desires like meaning
00:17:01 --> 00:17:03 and significance
00:17:03 --> 00:17:05 and security and purpose,
00:17:05 --> 00:17:08 and then you work out
00:17:08 --> 00:17:10 how you're going to fulfill
00:17:10 --> 00:17:12 those particular desires
00:17:12 --> 00:17:13 that you have.
00:17:13 --> 00:17:16 And whatever we believe in
00:17:16 --> 00:17:18 to fulfill those desires
00:17:18 --> 00:17:20 is what it is
00:17:20 --> 00:17:21 that we set our hearts on.
00:17:22 --> 00:17:24 Which is another way of saying
00:17:24 --> 00:17:25 it's
00:17:25 --> 00:17:28 what we put our hope in.
00:17:28 --> 00:17:32 Our hearts, for instance,
00:17:32 --> 00:17:33 might set on
00:17:33 --> 00:17:34 a career,
00:17:35 --> 00:17:36 on money,
00:17:36 --> 00:17:36 on accomplishment,
00:17:37 --> 00:17:37 on status,
00:17:37 --> 00:17:38 on love,
00:17:38 --> 00:17:39 on romance,
00:17:39 --> 00:17:39 on beauty,
00:17:39 --> 00:17:40 on family,
00:17:40 --> 00:17:42 on political or social causes,
00:17:43 --> 00:17:44 or a whole range of things.
00:17:44 --> 00:17:46 Everyone chooses something
00:17:46 --> 00:17:47 to believe in
00:17:47 --> 00:17:48 that will
00:17:48 --> 00:17:50 fulfill their hopes.
00:17:52 --> 00:17:53 We are
00:17:53 --> 00:17:56 unavoidably
00:17:56 --> 00:17:59 hope-based
00:17:59 --> 00:18:00 creatures.
00:18:02 --> 00:18:03 Proverbs 13,
00:18:03 --> 00:18:05 12 in the Old Testament
00:18:05 --> 00:18:06 tells us that
00:18:06 --> 00:18:07 hope deferred
00:18:07 --> 00:18:08 makes the heart sick.
00:18:11 --> 00:18:11 That is,
00:18:11 --> 00:18:12 it
00:18:12 --> 00:18:14 destroys
00:18:14 --> 00:18:15 our inner self.
00:18:17 --> 00:18:18 We experience
00:18:18 --> 00:18:19 our
00:18:19 --> 00:18:21 present
00:18:21 --> 00:18:22 in radically
00:18:22 --> 00:18:24 different ways
00:18:24 --> 00:18:24 depending
00:18:24 --> 00:18:26 on our future
00:18:26 --> 00:18:27 hope.
00:18:29 --> 00:18:30 We've got a lot of
00:18:30 --> 00:18:31 grass
00:18:31 --> 00:18:32 around here
00:18:32 --> 00:18:33 at church.
00:18:33 --> 00:18:34 So imagine
00:18:34 --> 00:18:35 I gave
00:18:35 --> 00:18:36 two of you
00:18:36 --> 00:18:37 a pair of scissors,
00:18:38 --> 00:18:39 a blunt pair of scissors,
00:18:40 --> 00:18:41 and said to you
00:18:41 --> 00:18:42 that your task
00:18:42 --> 00:18:44 was to cut the grass
00:18:44 --> 00:18:46 at St Paul's.
00:18:49 --> 00:18:49 And
00:18:49 --> 00:18:50 your
00:18:50 --> 00:18:51 experience
00:18:51 --> 00:18:52 of that
00:18:52 --> 00:18:53 task
00:18:53 --> 00:18:53 would be
00:18:53 --> 00:18:54 entirely
00:18:54 --> 00:18:55 different
00:18:55 --> 00:18:56 if I
00:18:56 --> 00:18:57 pulled one
00:18:57 --> 00:18:57 of you
00:18:57 --> 00:18:57 aside
00:18:57 --> 00:18:58 and said
00:18:58 --> 00:18:58 at the
00:18:58 --> 00:18:58 end of the
00:18:58 --> 00:18:59 job
00:18:59 --> 00:18:59 and it's
00:18:59 --> 00:18:59 all finished
00:18:59 --> 00:19:00 I'm going
00:19:00 --> 00:19:00 to give
00:19:00 --> 00:19:00 you $20.
00:19:02 --> 00:19:03 And the
00:19:03 --> 00:19:03 other one
00:19:03 --> 00:19:04 I pulled
00:19:04 --> 00:19:04 you aside
00:19:04 --> 00:19:05 and I
00:19:05 --> 00:19:05 said to you
00:19:05 --> 00:19:05 at the
00:19:05 --> 00:19:06 end of the
00:19:06 --> 00:19:06 job
00:19:06 --> 00:19:06 I'm going
00:19:06 --> 00:19:06 to give
00:19:06 --> 00:19:07 you $200.
00:19:13 --> 00:19:13 Both
00:19:13 --> 00:19:14 are going
00:19:14 --> 00:19:14 to have
00:19:14 --> 00:19:15 a very
00:19:15 --> 00:19:15 different
00:19:15 --> 00:19:16 experience
00:19:16 --> 00:19:17 of cutting
00:19:17 --> 00:19:18 the grass
00:19:18 --> 00:19:18 at that
00:19:18 --> 00:19:18 moment.
00:19:18 --> 00:19:21 hope
00:19:21 --> 00:19:22 makes
00:19:22 --> 00:19:22 all
00:19:22 --> 00:19:22 the
00:19:22 --> 00:19:23 difference
00:19:23 --> 00:19:24 to
00:19:24 --> 00:19:25 the
00:19:25 --> 00:19:26 experience.
00:19:27 --> 00:19:28 We are
00:19:28 --> 00:19:28 hope
00:19:28 --> 00:19:29 driven
00:19:29 --> 00:19:30 and the
00:19:30 --> 00:19:30 new
00:19:30 --> 00:19:31 birth
00:19:31 --> 00:19:31 changes
00:19:31 --> 00:19:31 our
00:19:31 --> 00:19:32 hopes
00:19:32 --> 00:19:32 because
00:19:32 --> 00:19:32 it is
00:19:32 --> 00:19:33 a
00:19:33 --> 00:19:33 living
00:19:33 --> 00:19:33 hope.
00:19:34 --> 00:19:34 It is
00:19:34 --> 00:19:35 alive
00:19:35 --> 00:19:36 in us.
00:19:36 --> 00:19:37 So how
00:19:37 --> 00:19:37 do we
00:19:37 --> 00:19:37 raise
00:19:37 --> 00:19:38 hope?
00:19:40 --> 00:19:41 How
00:19:41 --> 00:19:41 do we
00:19:41 --> 00:19:42 if you
00:19:42 --> 00:19:43 like wrench
00:19:43 --> 00:19:44 our hearts
00:19:44 --> 00:19:45 away from
00:19:45 --> 00:19:45 the
00:19:45 --> 00:19:46 fragile
00:19:46 --> 00:19:46 hopes
00:19:46 --> 00:19:47 that
00:19:47 --> 00:19:48 fade
00:19:48 --> 00:19:48 and
00:19:48 --> 00:19:49 that
00:19:49 --> 00:19:49 perish
00:19:49 --> 00:19:49 and
00:19:49 --> 00:19:50 that
00:19:50 --> 00:19:50 spoil
00:19:50 --> 00:19:51 and
00:19:51 --> 00:19:52 put
00:19:52 --> 00:19:52 it
00:19:52 --> 00:19:52 into
00:19:52 --> 00:19:52 a
00:19:52 --> 00:19:52 hope
00:19:52 --> 00:19:53 that
00:19:53 --> 00:19:53 will
00:19:53 --> 00:19:53 never
