Passage: 2 Peter 3:1-18
00:00:00 --> 00:00:03 We've been exploring these letters from Peter.
00:00:04 --> 00:00:08 He was Jesus' disciple, and he was a leader of the early church.
00:00:09 --> 00:00:18 And last Sunday, we heard from Steve about Peter's cowardly denial of the Lord Jesus Christ,
00:00:18 --> 00:00:20 denying Jesus three times.
00:00:21 --> 00:00:28 And I wanted to share how Luke records that moment in the Gospel of Luke.
00:00:30 --> 00:00:31 Jesus says,
00:00:32 --> 00:00:36 Simon, Simon, that's Peter's original name.
00:00:36 --> 00:00:40 Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat.
00:00:40 --> 00:00:44 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail.
00:00:44 --> 00:00:48 And when you have turned back, strengthen the brothers.
00:00:50 --> 00:00:55 Jesus graciously restored Peter as a friend and as a disciple.
00:00:55 --> 00:01:02 And then later, Peter is said to have died defending the faith that he once denied.
00:01:03 --> 00:01:07 But in that verse, there's a word in Greek there in verse 32,
00:01:07 --> 00:01:11 which is translated for us as strengthen.
00:01:12 --> 00:01:13 Strengthen your brothers.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:20 That's what Jesus would have Peter do when he is restored.
00:01:21 --> 00:01:27 And so at the end of this letter to Peter, in verse 17, there's that same Greek word.
00:01:29 --> 00:01:30 Verse 17 says,
00:01:30 --> 00:01:44 Peter's hope in his letters for us, for his readers,
00:01:45 --> 00:01:50 is that we would receive that same secure position that Jesus promised him.
00:01:50 --> 00:01:55 So we would not fall from our strength in Jesus.
00:01:56 --> 00:01:58 As Jesus upheld Peter,
00:01:59 --> 00:02:01 Jesus will uphold us
00:02:01 --> 00:02:06 by his word, promise, and patient grace.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:14 It is as if Peter wants to get this big rock and wedge it under us.
00:02:16 --> 00:02:18 That's what this chapter is.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:21 And this is the rock.
00:02:22 --> 00:02:25 The day of the Lord is coming.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:30 There really is a new future that Jesus offers us.
00:02:31 --> 00:02:33 And for Peter, it's foundational.
00:02:33 --> 00:02:38 Jesus is coming back.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:40 Steve called it judgment day.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:44 Chatswood calls it the end of the world.
00:02:45 --> 00:02:46 We try not to think about it too much.
00:02:47 --> 00:02:52 But we're going to spend our time right now looking at three things.
00:02:55 --> 00:02:56 What is the new future?
00:02:57 --> 00:02:58 Is the new future good?
00:02:58 --> 00:03:04 And what does it mean to live in light of the new future?
00:03:06 --> 00:03:08 Last week, we celebrated the resurrection of Jesus.
00:03:10 --> 00:03:12 It's great every year, but it's true every day.
00:03:13 --> 00:03:14 It is still true today.
00:03:14 --> 00:03:16 A dead man walked out of a tomb.
00:03:16 --> 00:03:25 After Jesus appeared to many, his disciples, and even to Peter, who had disowned him,
00:03:25 --> 00:03:29 the risen Lord Jesus did something amazing.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:31 He went home.
00:03:32 --> 00:03:37 Jesus ascended upward and out of view into heaven,
00:03:37 --> 00:03:40 where he sits enthroned at the right hand of God the Father.
00:03:40 --> 00:03:46 And before he left, Jesus promised that he would come back.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:50 And in verse 10 of our chapter today, keep that open in front of you,
00:03:50 --> 00:03:56 Peter calls that day, when Jesus comes back, the day of the Lord.
00:03:56 --> 00:04:03 Now, have you ever been to a really good birthday party?
00:04:05 --> 00:04:05 Yeah?
00:04:06 --> 00:04:07 Remember one recently?
00:04:08 --> 00:04:12 Well, the reason why those birthday parties are good, or when they're good,
00:04:13 --> 00:04:17 is when the birthday girl or birthday boy, no matter how old,
00:04:18 --> 00:04:21 is the focus of everyone's attention.
00:04:21 --> 00:04:22 Everyone treats them differently.
00:04:22 --> 00:04:28 People say what they mean about how they love that person.
00:04:28 --> 00:04:29 They say it out loud.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:30 They say it with gifts.
00:04:30 --> 00:04:31 They say it in cards.
00:04:31 --> 00:04:39 They say it and make that person the point of that special day.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:40 It's their day.
00:04:41 --> 00:04:44 Well, when Peter talks about the end of the world,
00:04:44 --> 00:04:48 he calls it the day of the Lord on purpose,
00:04:48 --> 00:04:51 because it's our Lord Jesus' day.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:56 Scientists say that there's this big crush coming.
00:04:56 --> 00:04:57 You heard of the Big Bang?
00:04:57 --> 00:04:58 The big crush is apparently coming.
00:04:58 --> 00:05:01 In 100 million years, everything's going to fall in on itself,
00:05:01 --> 00:05:06 and there will just be kind of a messed up, destroyed nothingness left.
00:05:07 --> 00:05:08 There's no hope in that.
00:05:10 --> 00:05:16 But Christians believe that our world will end when our Saviour Jesus comes back.
00:05:16 --> 00:05:17 He will rule.
00:05:18 --> 00:05:21 He will judge righteously.
00:05:23 --> 00:05:27 And he will reorder new heavens and a new earth, new universe.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:33 Jesus is the hope that Christians hold to for when the world ends.
00:05:34 --> 00:05:36 It will not be this hopeless, empty crush of nothing.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:41 The end of the world is the day of the Lord.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:45 Peter's confidence that the day of the Lord is coming
00:05:45 --> 00:05:49 is in verse 5 of our passage today,
00:05:49 --> 00:05:54 where Peter remembers that the world was created with God's words.
00:05:55 --> 00:05:57 And then in verse 7 he says,
00:05:57 --> 00:06:10 If God can create with words,
00:06:12 --> 00:06:17 Peter says we can trust Jesus' words when he says he will come back,
00:06:17 --> 00:06:22 and that he will speak an end to our day
00:06:22 --> 00:06:27 and utter in this new existence of our new future.
00:06:28 --> 00:06:29 It's not Jesus' birthday,
00:06:30 --> 00:06:32 but it's in every way.
00:06:32 --> 00:06:37 More intense, more special, more holy than we can ever imagine,
00:06:37 --> 00:06:39 and none of us are going to miss an invitation.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 Every human, living or dead,
00:06:43 --> 00:06:45 will see Jesus' return.
00:06:45 --> 00:06:50 And we'll declare him as Lord on that day,
00:06:50 --> 00:06:54 which we declared from Philippians 2 this morning.
00:06:55 --> 00:06:58 There will be an undeniable revealing
00:06:58 --> 00:07:02 of the end of our lordship of our lives
00:07:02 --> 00:07:06 and our dependence on the world that we knew.
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 Here's what I mean.
00:07:10 --> 00:07:13 Your life is like a TV show.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:16 Anyone watch TV here?
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 The best show ever is on,
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 and you're the star.
00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 That's what the world tells us.
00:07:23 --> 00:07:24 You are the actor,
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 the director,
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 and the writer,
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 and the main character,
00:07:30 --> 00:07:30 all as one.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:31 Isn't that amazing?
00:07:33 --> 00:07:34 It's your show.
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 Your way.
00:07:35 --> 00:07:38 That's what the world says your life is.
00:07:38 --> 00:07:41 But on the day of the lord,
00:07:42 --> 00:07:44 we lose our starring role.
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 Our screen time stops.
00:07:48 --> 00:07:50 The set gets shut down.
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 And it's burnt.
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 Tim Keller says
00:07:56 --> 00:07:59 that unless,
00:08:00 --> 00:08:02 if Jesus is lord at all,
00:08:03 --> 00:08:05 he must be lord of all.
00:08:05 --> 00:08:08 For on the day of the lord,
00:08:08 --> 00:08:11 Jesus will rightfully take our place
00:08:11 --> 00:08:13 in the role of our lives.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 And he will,
00:08:15 --> 00:08:17 we will not be able to deny
00:08:17 --> 00:08:19 that he deserves it.
00:08:20 --> 00:08:21 For he is our creator
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 and our judge
00:08:23 --> 00:08:25 in one.
00:08:25 --> 00:08:28 And we don't know
00:08:28 --> 00:08:29 when the day of the lord
00:08:29 --> 00:08:30 will come.
00:08:31 --> 00:08:33 It's on no calendar.
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 No one's got a right to guess.
00:08:35 --> 00:08:37 Even Jesus himself,
00:08:37 --> 00:08:39 in Matthew 24, 36,
00:08:39 --> 00:08:39 you can look it up,
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 even Jesus himself
00:08:41 --> 00:08:41 did not know
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 when it would be.
00:08:44 --> 00:08:45 Only the father knows.
00:08:47 --> 00:08:49 Peter is writing to a people
00:08:49 --> 00:08:49 who are desperate
00:08:49 --> 00:08:51 for Jesus to come back.
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 But he tells them
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 in verse 10,
00:08:53 --> 00:08:55 the day of the lord
00:08:55 --> 00:08:55 will come
00:08:55 --> 00:08:58 like a thief.
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 A thief arrives
00:09:01 --> 00:09:04 when we least expect it.
00:09:05 --> 00:09:07 The only way to cope
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 with not knowing
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 when the day of the lord
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 will come
00:09:10 --> 00:09:13 is not to know
00:09:13 --> 00:09:13 when it's coming.
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 But Peter says
00:09:15 --> 00:09:17 is to be sure
00:09:17 --> 00:09:18 that when it comes,
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 we are prepared.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 We are ready.
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 So Peter paints
00:09:24 --> 00:09:25 this picture
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 of what the day
00:09:26 --> 00:09:26 will be like
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 and it's unfiltered,
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 it's fiery
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 and it's on purpose.
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 It'll feature
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 the perishing
00:09:35 --> 00:09:38 in verse 9
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 and the destruction
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 in verse 7
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 of the ungodly.
00:09:41 --> 00:09:45 fires will roar
00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 as the objects
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 of our universe
00:09:48 --> 00:09:49 burn.
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 Verse 10
00:09:50 --> 00:09:50 and verse 12
00:09:50 --> 00:09:52 as everything
00:09:52 --> 00:09:54 will be laid bare.
00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 The day of the lord
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 ends
00:09:58 --> 00:10:00 with the removal
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 of all things
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 that humans
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 hold on to.
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 Our autonomy,
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 our possessions,
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 our comforts,
00:10:08 --> 00:10:10 our reputations
00:10:10 --> 00:10:12 and everything
00:10:12 --> 00:10:12 we're hiding
00:10:12 --> 00:10:14 from everyone else.
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 The day of the lord
00:10:16 --> 00:10:18 is a devastation
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 for all humanity
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 where verse 9
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 says we will
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 perish
00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 unless we're ready
00:10:24 --> 00:10:26 and there's only
00:10:26 --> 00:10:26 one way
00:10:26 --> 00:10:28 to be prepared
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 for the day
00:10:29 --> 00:10:31 and it's not
00:10:31 --> 00:10:31 knowing when
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 the day is coming
00:10:32 --> 00:10:34 and there's no
00:10:34 --> 00:10:34 getting away
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 from it.
00:10:35 --> 00:10:38 but look at
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 verse 9 again.
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 The one way
00:10:41 --> 00:10:41 to be ready
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 for the day
00:10:42 --> 00:10:42 of the lord
00:10:42 --> 00:10:44 is to repent.
00:10:48 --> 00:10:50 To repent
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 means turning
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 from our
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 sin and unbelief
00:10:53 --> 00:10:55 and trusting
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 in Jesus alone
00:10:56 --> 00:10:58 for forgiveness
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 from God.
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 Turning
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 and trusting.
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 It's a complete
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 apology
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 for how
00:11:05 --> 00:11:05 we've
00:11:05 --> 00:11:07 unrighteously
00:11:07 --> 00:11:07 claimed
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 the starring
00:11:08 --> 00:11:08 role of our
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 lives
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 and actively
00:11:10 --> 00:11:12 yielding
00:11:12 --> 00:11:14 that back
00:11:14 --> 00:11:14 to the lord
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 Jesus
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 while we live
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 before
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 the day
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 of the lord
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 arrives.
00:11:22 --> 00:11:22 But
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 there would
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 be no value
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 in our repentance
00:11:25 --> 00:11:28 if not for
00:11:28 --> 00:11:28 Jesus
00:11:28 --> 00:11:31 for he
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 is willing
00:11:32 --> 00:11:32 to hear
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 from you
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 hear your
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 repentance
00:11:35 --> 00:11:39 and your
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 desire for
00:11:40 --> 00:11:40 him to
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 take
00:11:41 --> 00:11:41 your sin.
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 In
00:11:44 --> 00:11:44 exchange
00:11:44 --> 00:11:46 he is
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 willing to
00:11:47 --> 00:11:47 take the
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 punishment
00:11:48 --> 00:11:48 you deserve
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 for playing
00:11:49 --> 00:11:49 his role
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 in your
00:11:50 --> 00:11:50 life
00:11:50 --> 00:11:53 and give
00:11:53 --> 00:11:53 to you
00:11:53 --> 00:11:55 his place
00:11:55 --> 00:11:55 in a perfect
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 relationship
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 with God
00:11:57 --> 00:11:59 with the
00:11:59 --> 00:11:59 creator
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 and director.
00:12:00 --> 00:12:02 Jesus
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 will receive
00:12:03 --> 00:12:04 you.
00:12:06 --> 00:12:06 Every
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 repentant
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 human
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 will
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 receive
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 this
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 glorious
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 movie
00:12:13 --> 00:12:13 ending
00:12:13 --> 00:12:17 and he
00:12:17 --> 00:12:17 will take
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 on our
00:12:18 --> 00:12:18 judgment
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 and punishment
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 under the
00:12:20 --> 00:12:20 wrath of
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 God
00:12:21 --> 00:12:23 without cost
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 because he
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 loves us.
00:12:25 --> 00:12:28 remember
00:12:28 --> 00:12:28 how good
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 Easter is.
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 There's so
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 much in
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 Good Friday
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 that is
00:12:34 --> 00:12:34 good.
00:12:38 --> 00:12:38 The
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 repentant
00:12:39 --> 00:12:39 are safe
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 on the
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 day of
00:12:41 --> 00:12:41 the Lord.
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 So if you
00:12:42 --> 00:12:42 repent and
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 hand over
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 your life
00:12:44 --> 00:12:45 to Jesus
00:12:45 --> 00:12:46 today
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 if you
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 already
00:12:48 --> 00:12:48 have
00:12:48 --> 00:12:50 then your
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 safety and
00:12:51 --> 00:12:51 joy
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 joy
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 is assured
00:12:53 --> 00:12:54 right now
00:12:54 --> 00:12:57 only because
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 of Jesus.
00:12:59 --> 00:12:59 Peter says
00:12:59 --> 00:13:00 in verse
00:13:00 --> 00:13:00 13
00:13:00 --> 00:13:02 he is
00:13:02 --> 00:13:02 looking
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 forward
00:13:03 --> 00:13:04 to the
00:13:04 --> 00:13:04 new
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 creation
00:13:05 --> 00:13:05 to the
00:13:05 --> 00:13:05 new
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 future
00:13:06 --> 00:13:06 to the
00:13:06 --> 00:13:06 day
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 of the
00:13:07 --> 00:13:07 Lord
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 because
00:13:08 --> 00:13:10 Jesus
00:13:10 --> 00:13:10 is coming
00:13:10 --> 00:13:11 back.
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 That is
00:13:12 --> 00:13:12 where
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 the new
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 creation
00:13:14 --> 00:13:14 will be
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 where
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 righteousness
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 dwells.
00:13:18 --> 00:13:18 It will
00:13:18 --> 00:13:18 be where
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 Jesus'
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 righteousness
00:13:20 --> 00:13:20 defines
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 this new
00:13:21 --> 00:13:21 creation
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 and his
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 complete
00:13:23 --> 00:13:23 presence
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 with us
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 those who
00:13:25 --> 00:13:25 repent
00:13:25 --> 00:13:27 will make
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 that day
00:13:28 --> 00:13:28 so very
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 joyous
00:13:29 --> 00:13:29 and so
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 very
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 wonderful.
00:13:33 --> 00:13:33 But for
00:13:33 --> 00:13:33 those who
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 reject Jesus'
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 lordship
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 while they
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 live on
00:13:37 --> 00:13:37 earth
00:13:37 --> 00:13:39 they will
00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 acknowledge it
00:13:40 --> 00:13:40 on the
00:13:40 --> 00:13:40 day of the
00:13:40 --> 00:13:40 Lord
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 but they
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 will be
00:13:42 --> 00:13:42 judged
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 for their
00:13:43 --> 00:13:43 life
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 as it
00:13:44 --> 00:13:44 is now.
00:13:46 --> 00:13:46 And
00:13:46 --> 00:13:47 their end
00:13:47 --> 00:13:47 Peter says
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 is
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 destruction.
00:13:50 --> 00:13:52 How does
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 this new
00:13:53 --> 00:13:53 future
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 sit with
00:13:54 --> 00:13:54 you?
00:13:57 --> 00:13:57 Are you
00:13:57 --> 00:13:58 looking forward
00:13:58 --> 00:13:58 to it?
00:13:59 --> 00:13:59 This day
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 of the
00:14:00 --> 00:14:00 Lord
00:14:00 --> 00:14:02 with fear
00:14:02 --> 00:14:03 worry
00:14:03 --> 00:14:05 or joy?
00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 How can
00:14:09 --> 00:14:09 God's
00:14:09 --> 00:14:10 judgment
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 day be
00:14:11 --> 00:14:11 good?
00:14:13 --> 00:14:13 How can
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 we look
00:14:14 --> 00:14:14 forward to
00:14:14 --> 00:14:14 it?
00:14:16 --> 00:14:17 Jesus'
00:14:17 --> 00:14:17 apparent
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 slowness
00:14:18 --> 00:14:18 to come
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 back
00:14:19 --> 00:14:21 was the
00:14:21 --> 00:14:21 reason that
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 skeptics
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 mocked
00:14:23 --> 00:14:23 the early
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 church
00:14:24 --> 00:14:24 back in
00:14:24 --> 00:14:24 Peter's
00:14:24 --> 00:14:25 day.
00:14:25 --> 00:14:25 And we
00:14:25 --> 00:14:26 heard
00:14:26 --> 00:14:26 Rachel
00:14:26 --> 00:14:27 read it
00:14:27 --> 00:14:27 before
00:14:27 --> 00:14:27 in
00:14:27 --> 00:14:27 Psalm
00:14:27 --> 00:14:28 90
00:14:28 --> 00:14:28 and
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 Peter
00:14:29 --> 00:14:29 refers
00:14:29 --> 00:14:29 to
00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 that
