00:00:07 --> 00:00:11 If you've not met me before, my name's Steve Jeffrey. I'm the senior pastor here at St Paul's,
00:00:11 --> 00:00:18 and it's my joy to be able to connect us into the next stage of the book of Acts, which we're journeying through at the moment.
00:00:19 --> 00:00:29 Very few, I think, would argue about the quality of community has declined in society in recent years.
00:00:29 --> 00:00:32 In fact, not just recent years, over quite a number of years.
00:00:33 --> 00:00:42 In fact, one of the biggest social issues in our community here in Chatswood is, in fact, social isolation,
00:00:43 --> 00:00:46 as it is for many people in large cities around the world.
00:00:47 --> 00:00:53 There is, if you like, a superficiality to our personal relationships.
00:00:54 --> 00:00:55 But it's not new.
00:00:55 --> 00:01:06 In 1955, in his book, The Sane Society, Eric Fromm, who was a social psychologist, wrote this.
00:01:06 --> 00:01:09 There is not much love to be found in the world of our day.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:18 There is rather a superficial friendliness concealing a distance, an indifference, and a subtle distrust.
00:01:18 --> 00:01:27 The radical psychologist R.D. Lang wrote in his 1967 book, The Politics of Experience,
00:01:27 --> 00:01:32 we are born into a world where social isolation awaits us.
00:01:33 --> 00:01:38 Before we can even ask such optimistic questions as what is a personal relationship,
00:01:39 --> 00:01:45 we have to ask if personal relationships are even possible in this present situation.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:49 So how do we react when we hear phrases like that?
00:01:49 --> 00:01:57 When we hear things like superficial friendliness and social isolation and emotional isolation, words like that.
00:01:57 --> 00:02:01 These are real issues in our society, in our community.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:04 And in fact, it may be for you personally right now,
00:02:04 --> 00:02:10 whether maybe even you sitting at home right now, all alone, watching, engaging with this.
00:02:10 --> 00:02:14 I think it's an issue which we've become more aware of.
00:02:14 --> 00:02:24 I'm certainly hearing statements and phrases like feeling disconnected in this COVID-19 season.
00:02:24 --> 00:02:36 We live in a sick society that desperately needs to discover this idea of community and connectedness and relationship.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:39 There is a sign of hope for us.
00:02:39 --> 00:02:46 The opening chapters of Acts points us to such a community.
00:02:47 --> 00:02:48 It's a special community.
00:02:49 --> 00:02:54 It's called many things, but most frequently in the New Testament, it's called the church.
00:02:54 --> 00:02:58 So we're going to journey today to see what it is.
00:02:58 --> 00:02:59 What is this church?
00:02:59 --> 00:03:04 So if you've got the St. Paul's app, you can open up and you'll see an outline.
00:03:04 --> 00:03:05 I've got four things.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:10 It was going to be five, but I've narrowed it down to four because the fifth thing was addressed last week.
00:03:10 --> 00:03:16 So four things in Acts chapter 4 verse 32 through to chapter 6 verse 7.
00:03:16 --> 00:03:21 So if you haven't got the St. Paul's app, at the very least, you can open up a Bible and follow along with me on this one.
00:03:21 --> 00:03:24 There's four things about this new community.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:25 It's a saved community.
00:03:26 --> 00:03:28 It's an organic and gracious community.
00:03:28 --> 00:03:30 It's a disciplined community.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:31 And it's an organized community.
00:03:31 --> 00:03:32 They're the four things.
00:03:32 --> 00:03:39 So first of all, and foundationally and fundamentally, this new community is a saved community.
00:03:39 --> 00:03:42 In Acts chapter 2, we saw it a couple of weeks ago.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:43 It's the day of Pentecost.
00:03:44 --> 00:03:51 The apostle Peter gives his first and his greatest sermon, an experience that most preachers don't ever have.
00:03:51 --> 00:03:53 His first and his greatest sermon.
00:03:54 --> 00:03:58 And he gets to the application of this sermon in verse 36 of Acts 2.
00:03:58 --> 00:03:59 So have a look at that.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:01 Skip back a couple of chapters for me.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:02 It says,
00:04:02 --> 00:04:03 Therefore, this is his application.
00:04:04 --> 00:04:07 Therefore, let all of Israel be assured of this.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:15 God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:21 And there's a multitude that are gathered there listening to this sermon from across the Roman Empire,
00:04:21 --> 00:04:23 all different cultures and languages.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:26 And it says they were convicted.
00:04:27 --> 00:04:29 They came under deep conviction.
00:04:30 --> 00:04:37 Conviction both of their own sin and of the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
00:04:37 --> 00:04:42 And so they said, Peter, what are we going to do now?
00:04:42 --> 00:04:42 What happens now?
00:04:43 --> 00:04:47 And Peter called the gathering to repent and to be baptized.
00:04:48 --> 00:04:55 And what Luke concludes, he concludes a description of that day by adding in verse 40 of chapter 2,
00:04:55 --> 00:04:59 with many other words, he, that's Peter, warned them.
00:05:00 --> 00:05:05 And he pleaded with them, save yourselves from this corrupt generation.
00:05:06 --> 00:05:12 And those who accepted his message were baptized and about 3 were added to their number that day.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:17 Notice what Peter does is he warns them.
00:05:17 --> 00:05:20 He pleads with them to be saved.
00:05:20 --> 00:05:25 That's the essential thing that they need to do is to be saved.
00:05:25 --> 00:05:31 And he declares in another sermon he gives, which is also pretty good, in chapter 4, verse 12,
00:05:32 --> 00:05:32 Peter says,
00:05:32 --> 00:05:55 So what Peter's talking about there in Acts 4, and the same experience in Acts 2,
00:05:55 --> 00:06:02 is that what he's talking about is not some kind of optional spiritual experience,
00:06:04 --> 00:06:09 but about a radical moral rescue,
00:06:10 --> 00:06:14 which all of humanity must experience,
00:06:16 --> 00:06:19 lest they perish under the judgment of their creator God.
00:06:19 --> 00:06:22 That's what he's talking about.
00:06:23 --> 00:06:28 Jesus Christ is the resurrected, death-defeating, sin-crushing,
00:06:28 --> 00:06:32 relationship with our creator-restoring, Lord of the universe.
00:06:32 --> 00:06:34 He sits enthroned as king,
00:06:36 --> 00:06:37 never to be challenged.
00:06:38 --> 00:06:40 No greater authority,
00:06:41 --> 00:06:43 and therefore no other alternative,
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 no other rescue plan.
00:06:45 --> 00:06:49 And what Peter says here is,
00:06:49 --> 00:06:51 in Acts 2 and in Acts 4,
00:06:52 --> 00:06:55 you neglect Jesus at your peril.
00:06:58 --> 00:07:02 He's saying there is a must about Jesus.
00:07:02 --> 00:07:03 Not a maybe,
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 it's a must.
00:07:06 --> 00:07:09 Jesus Christ is the most important thing
00:07:09 --> 00:07:11 that has happened in the history of the world.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:16 And what you saw in Acts 2,
00:07:17 --> 00:07:23 if you sort of tuned in a little bit to the language of what Peter uses,
00:07:24 --> 00:07:26 is that Peter divides the world into two groups.
00:07:27 --> 00:07:28 Only two.
00:07:29 --> 00:07:29 He says,
00:07:30 --> 00:07:31 save yourself from something.
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 Save yourself from a particular community.
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 This corrupt generation.
00:07:39 --> 00:07:41 You are part of a group,
00:07:41 --> 00:07:41 a community.
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 And he says,
00:07:42 --> 00:07:44 save yourself from that community
00:07:44 --> 00:07:49 that lives as if the God of this universe doesn't matter.
00:07:49 --> 00:07:52 As if Jesus isn't King and Lord of the universe.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:54 As if he isn't the Messiah.
00:07:54 --> 00:07:56 Save yourself from that community
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 and join a new community.
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 A new society.
00:07:59 --> 00:08:00 A new group.
00:08:01 --> 00:08:03 Saved by the death and resurrection of Jesus.
00:08:04 --> 00:08:05 And what Peter declares,
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 and as the New Testament declares,
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 in fact,
00:08:07 --> 00:08:09 what the whole Bible declares,
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 what Christianity declares,
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 is there's only two groups of people.
00:08:12 --> 00:08:16 You're either in one corrupt group that rejects God
00:08:16 --> 00:08:19 or you're in the group that has been saved by Jesus Christ.
00:08:20 --> 00:08:21 On either community.
00:08:21 --> 00:08:26 And so for the early Christians in Acts,
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 being saved by Jesus
00:08:28 --> 00:08:33 was a matter of leaving a community under judgment
00:08:33 --> 00:08:38 to finding refuge and joy
00:08:38 --> 00:08:40 and hope and life and forgiveness
00:08:40 --> 00:08:42 and new salvation
00:08:42 --> 00:08:46 in the community of those who have been saved by Jesus Christ.
00:08:46 --> 00:08:51 Christians are bound together
00:08:51 --> 00:08:53 as a new people
00:08:53 --> 00:08:56 because of our common salvation.
00:08:56 --> 00:08:58 There is no such thing
00:08:58 --> 00:08:59 as isolated,
00:08:59 --> 00:09:00 go it alone,
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 choose my journey,
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 my commitment levels,
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 Christianity.
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 I do not get an option.
00:09:06 --> 00:09:08 It is not up to me
00:09:08 --> 00:09:10 to choose what I think level of commitment
00:09:10 --> 00:09:11 I will give and won't give.
00:09:11 --> 00:09:16 Those are the defining things
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 of the corrupt generation,
00:09:17 --> 00:09:19 not the new community
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 under the Lordship of Jesus.
00:09:22 --> 00:09:24 And Christians are bound together
00:09:24 --> 00:09:24 as a new people
00:09:24 --> 00:09:26 because of a common salvation.
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 They have a new common salvation
00:09:29 --> 00:09:31 and that common salvation
00:09:31 --> 00:09:31 trumps everything
00:09:31 --> 00:09:33 because there's not much else
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 that they necessarily have in common.
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 But it's enough.
00:09:36 --> 00:09:40 Chapter 4, verse 32,
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 all the believers
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 were one in heart and mind.
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 They were made up of believers.
00:09:45 --> 00:09:45 This new community
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 is made up of believers
00:09:46 --> 00:09:48 who differed in opinions
00:09:48 --> 00:09:49 on a whole range of different things.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 Who to vote for?
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 Not that they did it back in those days,
00:09:52 --> 00:09:53 but who to vote for?
00:09:53 --> 00:09:56 Food, clothing, language, customs,
00:09:56 --> 00:09:58 all kinds of different personal opinions.
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 They were, however, united
00:10:01 --> 00:10:03 in one fundamental,
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 most important thing
00:10:04 --> 00:10:07 that rose above every other difference
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 and that is that Jesus
00:10:08 --> 00:10:10 is Lord of all
00:10:10 --> 00:10:13 and he's the Messiah who saved us.
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 We make him the main thing.
00:10:17 --> 00:10:20 We are bound together
00:10:20 --> 00:10:22 because of our common salvation.
00:10:23 --> 00:10:28 1982, British Airways Boeing 747-200
00:10:28 --> 00:10:32 was flying at a very high altitude.
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 You know, your cruising altitude
00:10:33 --> 00:10:35 over Indonesia
00:10:35 --> 00:10:39 flying to New Zealand,
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 I think from memory.
00:10:41 --> 00:10:43 And what the crew could not see
00:10:43 --> 00:10:45 as they were flying the plane
00:10:45 --> 00:10:48 was this cloud of volcanic ash
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 right in their flight path.
00:10:51 --> 00:10:53 Mount Galganan in Indonesia
00:10:53 --> 00:10:56 had erupted just days before
00:10:56 --> 00:10:58 and there's this huge cloud
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 of volcanic ash
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 which back in those days
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 were not picked up on radar
00:11:01 --> 00:11:03 and then when the plane
00:11:03 --> 00:11:06 flew through the volcanic ash,
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 what it did was,
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 was in a couple of minutes
00:11:09 --> 00:11:11 clogged up all four of its engines
00:11:11 --> 00:11:13 and shut them down.
00:11:14 --> 00:11:16 So this 747 became a,
00:11:16 --> 00:11:18 what is technically a glider now
00:11:18 --> 00:11:20 and it was gliding in the air.
00:11:21 --> 00:11:23 You can imagine the silence of this
00:11:23 --> 00:11:25 for 16 minutes.
00:11:25 --> 00:11:27 16 minutes,
00:11:28 --> 00:11:30 no, under no power whatsoever
00:11:30 --> 00:11:33 and descending at a kilometre per minute.
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 Or something like that.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 Every certain minutes.
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 Fast anyway.
00:11:41 --> 00:11:43 Most people sitting on that plane
00:11:43 --> 00:11:43 in that moment
00:11:43 --> 00:11:45 were convinced they were going to die.
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 They grabbed bits of paper
00:11:47 --> 00:11:47 and pens as they could
00:11:47 --> 00:11:49 and scrawled notes
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 to family members
00:11:50 --> 00:11:53 in the hope that in the wreckage
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 those notes would be found.
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 Amazingly,
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 because of a fluke thing
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 that the captain did in that moment
00:11:58 --> 00:12:01 in deciding to descend faster,
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 which is against all logic,
00:12:03 --> 00:12:05 actually the descent going faster
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 unclogged the engines
00:12:06 --> 00:12:08 which allowed him to restart the motor.
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 It is now,
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 you can look it up,
00:12:11 --> 00:12:13 it is now in the Guinness Book of Records
00:12:13 --> 00:12:16 as the longest unpowered flight
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 by an aircraft
00:12:17 --> 00:12:19 not designed to fly unpowered.
00:12:19 --> 00:12:21 Now,
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 if you are sitting on that plane
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 in that moment
00:12:25 --> 00:12:27 when after 16 minutes of silence
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 all of a sudden,
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 boom,
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 the engines kick in,
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 the excitement,
00:12:33 --> 00:12:35 you start gaining altitude
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 and eventually you land safely.
00:12:38 --> 00:12:40 You have a new lease on life.
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 Everything changes in that moment.
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 And so what did the passengers
00:12:44 --> 00:12:45 on this plane do?
00:12:45 --> 00:12:47 They formed a club.
00:12:49 --> 00:12:52 It's known as the Galganan Gliding Club.
00:12:53 --> 00:12:55 The Galganan Gliding Club.
00:12:55 --> 00:12:57 They get together annually
00:12:57 --> 00:13:00 on the date of the flight
00:13:00 --> 00:13:02 and they celebrate life together.
00:13:03 --> 00:13:04 That's what they do.
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 That's their whole existence,
00:13:05 --> 00:13:08 to celebrate a new lease on life.
00:13:08 --> 00:13:11 To be saved by Jesus
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 is to be a member
00:13:12 --> 00:13:14 of his saved community.
00:13:15 --> 00:13:17 Church is not what you attend.
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 Church is what you belong to.
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 Church is who you are.
00:13:21 --> 00:13:23 You now have been redefined.
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 Saved into the new community
00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 of the saved.
00:13:27 --> 00:13:27 Secondly,
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 we see that this new community
00:13:29 --> 00:13:31 that has been graciously saved
00:13:31 --> 00:13:33 by the Lord Jesus Christ
00:13:33 --> 00:13:36 becomes an organically
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 gracious community
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 under the power
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 of the Holy Spirit.
00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 Verse 32 again.
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 No one,
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 this is this new community,
00:13:43 --> 00:13:45 no one claimed
00:13:45 --> 00:13:47 that any of their possessions
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 was their own.
00:13:49 --> 00:13:51 But they shared everything
00:13:51 --> 00:13:51 that they had.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 Then down in verse 34,
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 there was no needy persons
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 among them
00:13:56 --> 00:13:59 for from time to time
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 those who owned land
00:14:00 --> 00:14:01 or houses sold them,
00:14:02 --> 00:14:02 bought the money
00:14:02 --> 00:14:03 from the sales
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 and put it at the apostles' feet.
00:14:04 --> 00:14:06 And it was distributed
00:14:06 --> 00:14:07 to anyone
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 who had need.
00:14:09 --> 00:14:09 Joseph,
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 a Levi from Cyprus,
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 whom the apostles
00:14:12 --> 00:14:12 called Barnabas,
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 which means son of encouragement,
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 sold a field
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 that he owned
00:14:16 --> 00:14:17 and bought the money
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 and put it
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 at the apostles' feet.
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 This is not
00:14:24 --> 00:14:26 an early form of communism.
00:14:27 --> 00:14:28 That's not what's going on here.
00:14:28 --> 00:14:34 Did you notice
00:14:34 --> 00:14:35 the high degree
00:14:35 --> 00:14:37 of voluntary commitment
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 that these believers
00:14:38 --> 00:14:40 displayed towards each other?
00:14:40 --> 00:14:42 Voluntary commitment.
00:14:43 --> 00:14:44 Private ownership
00:14:44 --> 00:14:46 was recognised,
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 but no one pressed
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 their rights
00:14:49 --> 00:14:50 to private ownership.
00:14:50 --> 00:14:53 This is spontaneous.
00:14:53 --> 00:14:55 It is extraordinary generosity.
00:14:55 --> 00:14:56 It's organic.
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 It's not structured,
00:14:57 --> 00:14:57 not planned.
00:14:57 --> 00:14:58 There's no
00:14:58 --> 00:15:00 sell your property campaign
00:15:00 --> 00:15:00 going on here.
00:15:01 --> 00:15:02 There's no campaign
00:15:02 --> 00:15:03 by the apostles.
00:15:04 --> 00:15:04 Their sharing
00:15:04 --> 00:15:05 was selfless,
00:15:05 --> 00:15:06 it was sacrificial
00:15:06 --> 00:15:07 and it was voluntary.
00:15:08 --> 00:15:09 There's no law
00:15:09 --> 00:15:10 imposing these standards.
00:15:11 --> 00:15:11 This is simply
00:15:11 --> 00:15:13 a desire
00:15:13 --> 00:15:14 that has grown
00:15:14 --> 00:15:14 in them
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 because of the work
00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 of the Holy Spirit
00:15:16 --> 00:15:17 in their life
00:15:17 --> 00:15:18 and God's radical generosity
00:15:18 --> 00:15:19 to them
00:15:19 --> 00:15:20 in the Lord Jesus.
00:15:20 --> 00:15:22 This is a church
00:15:22 --> 00:15:22 that has
00:15:22 --> 00:15:24 a social conscience.
00:15:24 --> 00:15:25 It didn't appear
00:15:25 --> 00:15:26 to be a strategy
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 for growth.
00:15:28 --> 00:15:29 It was simply
00:15:29 --> 00:15:30 an organic,
00:15:30 --> 00:15:32 spontaneous expression
00:15:32 --> 00:15:32 of the love
00:15:32 --> 00:15:33 of the Holy Spirit
00:15:33 --> 00:15:34 had poured
00:15:34 --> 00:15:35 into their hearts.
00:15:35 --> 00:15:36 And what's more,
00:15:37 --> 00:15:37 crucially,
00:15:38 --> 00:15:39 there is no evidence
00:15:39 --> 00:15:41 that the early church
00:15:41 --> 00:15:43 confused this ministry,
00:15:43 --> 00:15:45 this ministry
00:15:45 --> 00:15:46 of meeting people's needs
00:15:46 --> 00:15:50 with the evangelistic task
00:15:50 --> 00:15:51 in which Jesus
00:15:51 --> 00:15:51 had given them
00:15:51 --> 00:15:52 to proclaim
00:15:52 --> 00:15:53 the good news
00:15:53 --> 00:15:54 to all peoples
00:15:54 --> 00:15:55 to the ends of the earth.
00:15:56 --> 00:15:56 No confusion.
00:15:59 --> 00:16:00 Verse 33,
00:16:00 --> 00:16:01 right in the middle
00:16:01 --> 00:16:01 of all this,
00:16:02 --> 00:16:03 with great power,
00:16:03 --> 00:16:04 the apostles
00:16:04 --> 00:16:05 continued to testify
00:16:05 --> 00:16:07 to the resurrection
00:16:07 --> 00:16:08 of the Lord Jesus.
00:16:10 --> 00:16:11 Resurrection truth
00:16:11 --> 00:16:12 is the key
00:16:12 --> 00:16:13 to this new community.
00:16:14 --> 00:16:15 The historical bodily
00:16:15 --> 00:16:16 resurrection of Jesus
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 means that everything
00:16:17 --> 00:16:18 that Jesus declared
00:16:18 --> 00:16:19 about his identity
00:16:19 --> 00:16:20 as God
00:16:20 --> 00:16:22 and all of his saving plans
00:16:22 --> 00:16:23 are for humanity
00:16:23 --> 00:16:24 and his lordship
00:16:24 --> 00:16:25 over all the universe
00:16:25 --> 00:16:26 are right.
00:16:28 --> 00:16:29 They're right.
00:16:30 --> 00:16:31 He's vindicated.
00:16:33 --> 00:16:34 And this early church
00:16:34 --> 00:16:36 didn't substitute
00:16:36 --> 00:16:37 social action
00:16:37 --> 00:16:39 with proclaiming
