00:00:00 --> 00:00:07 Well, hello all and welcome. Let me add my welcome to the others you've received this morning.
00:00:07 --> 00:00:11 If I've not met you before, my name is Steve Jeffrey. I'm the senior pastor here at St. Paul's
00:00:11 --> 00:00:18 and I'm so glad you tuned in for us today. As you have just seen, we're up to Habakkuk chapter 2.
00:00:18 --> 00:00:24 If you haven't got a Bible there, if you'd like to open it up, grab it, iPad, whatever it might be.
00:00:24 --> 00:00:30 Also, if you go to St. Paul's app, you will also find the outline for today's sermon there.
00:00:31 --> 00:00:40 We're up to Habakkuk chapter 2. Now, if some of you may be aware of this, Malcolm Naden was the
00:00:40 --> 00:00:48 most wanted person in New South Wales up until his capture and arrest a little over about eight years
00:00:48 --> 00:00:58 ago now. He was on the run from June 2005 until March 2012 when he was finally captured in the
00:00:58 --> 00:01:04 middle of the night in this little cabin, remote cabin west of the little town of Gloucester.
00:01:06 --> 00:01:16 He was, in fact, a source of embarrassment to law enforcement agencies in our state as he eluded
00:01:16 --> 00:01:24 them and escaped capture for about seven years. So imagine after their frustration of trying to
00:01:24 --> 00:01:32 catch him and not being able to catch him, they decided that the best way to finally deal with
00:01:32 --> 00:01:38 their biggest issue of securing the capture of Malcolm Naden and bringing him to justice was instead
00:01:38 --> 00:01:48 to call in the military and to issue nuclear strikes everywhere from Newcastle to Armidale and,
00:01:48 --> 00:01:55 you know, 500 kilometers and I just wipe out the whole section of the state in the attempt to get him.
00:01:56 --> 00:02:04 Now, that particular strategy has its strengths. You finally get the guy who's eluded you on so many
00:02:04 --> 00:02:09 occasions. You get rid of a whole bunch of feral animals and potentially a few illegal crops in there
00:02:09 --> 00:02:15 hiding away in the bush. Of course, the major negative which virtually the whole world would
00:02:15 --> 00:02:23 have a problem with is that you wipe out everyone and everything in that space as well. Now, as we launch
00:02:23 --> 00:02:28 into the book of Habakkuk, and if you've been with us in the last couple of weeks, you probably would
00:02:28 --> 00:02:36 have seen this already. It appears on the surface that that is God's solution to the evil and the
00:02:36 --> 00:02:44 carnage and the sin in this little book of the Bible called Habakkuk. If you've just joined us,
00:02:44 --> 00:02:49 we're partway through it already, and it's a pretty straightforward book. It's actually pretty
00:02:49 --> 00:02:57 interesting and highly practical, even if a little confusing at times. It is about how to face
00:02:57 --> 00:03:05 times, times of evil and difficulty. They might be evil times, difficult times on an international
00:03:05 --> 00:03:12 scale or a national scale, or they might even be deeply personal times of evil and hardship,
00:03:13 --> 00:03:24 when everything in life comes crashing down for us. This little book prepares us for the times when
00:03:24 --> 00:03:32 it comes, as it did for the man Habakkuk. Now, Habakkuk states his main issue with God's solution
00:03:32 --> 00:03:40 to the evil of his own people Israel by sending in the schoolyard bullies of that time, the Babylonian
00:03:40 --> 00:03:43 empire. And he says this in chapter 1 verse 13,
00:03:43 --> 00:03:54 Why are you silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves?
00:03:56 --> 00:04:04 See, Habakkuk's question is this, God, how can you possibly use the more wicked Babylonians to deal
00:04:04 --> 00:04:10 with the less wicked Israelites? How can you do that? And his question is, what about the Babylonians?
00:04:10 --> 00:04:15 Are they just going to get away with their evil? I mean, you're going to deal with Israel's evil.
00:04:15 --> 00:04:23 What about the Babylonians evil? Will they get punished as well? That's where we were left at the end of
00:04:23 --> 00:04:34 last week. And so what we're launching into now is God's answer to Habakkuk's second and big complaint.
00:04:34 --> 00:04:38 So if you've got the St. Paul's app open, you'll see that I've got three main points there.
00:04:38 --> 00:04:47 And God judges all sin and evil, the source of all sin and evil, and thirdly, God's solution to our
00:04:47 --> 00:04:57 sin and evil. So firstly, Habakkuk chapter 2, God judges all sin and evil. Now, as you launch into
00:04:57 --> 00:05:05 Habakkuk chapter 2, which was just read out to us, you will notice that Babylon is mocked there in five
00:05:05 --> 00:05:12 separate statements of woes. You can see it as you read through five separate woes.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:21 Even though Babylon at in that time looked invincible to Habakkuk and to everyone who could
00:05:21 --> 00:05:30 see they looked invincible. Even Babylon was brought down. Even Babylon was brought to an end in 539 BC.
00:05:30 --> 00:05:37 And so each of these five woes, or you know, you might want to call them curses,
00:05:38 --> 00:05:48 it details the crimes perpetrated by Babylon and God's response to those. And those crimes of Babylon
00:05:48 --> 00:05:54 just have such, they resonate with much of what we see still around this world.
00:05:54 --> 00:06:06 The first woe is in verses 6 to 8 of chapter 2. And it's directed towards those who acquire goods
00:06:06 --> 00:06:15 dishonestly. What happens to those who are acquiring their goods dishonestly? The Bible turns the table on
00:06:15 --> 00:06:25 them. The victims become the victors. So notice verse 8 particularly. Because you have plundered many
00:06:25 --> 00:06:35 nations, the peoples who are left will plunder you. So what God does here is he relates to Habakkuk
00:06:35 --> 00:06:47 the basic principle of justice. The basic principle of justice. And it is the punishment should fit the
00:06:47 --> 00:06:56 crime. The punishment should fit the crime. And you see the same pattern right through these five woes.
00:06:56 --> 00:07:06 Verses 9 to 11. We have the plotter who exploits for personal gain or national or family or even family
00:07:06 --> 00:07:15 dynasty glory. This is about the pursuit of glory. What's the punishment for those who do everything
00:07:15 --> 00:07:20 in order to advance their glory, to make their name great, that people would praise them?
00:07:20 --> 00:07:35 Verse 10. Shame instead of glory. The person who lives to make their name great, their name will become
00:07:35 --> 00:07:48 less. Nothing. Verses 12 and 13. We have the promoter of violence. The foundation of Babylon society was in
00:07:48 --> 00:07:55 fact bloodshed, the blood of their enemies. And their punishment is in verse 13. Has not the Lord
00:07:55 --> 00:08:04 almighty determined that the people's labor is only fuel for the fire? They were burning, sorry, they were
00:08:04 --> 00:08:11 building an empire that would be merely fuel for the fire of God's judgment.
00:08:11 --> 00:08:22 James 5. James 5. James chapter 5 verse 5 in the New Testament speaks of rich oppressors who have fattened
00:08:22 --> 00:08:28 themselves for the day of slaughter. That's all they've achieved, their own demise.
00:08:28 --> 00:08:41 verse 15. Verse 15. We have the immoral. They glorified themselves by shaming their enemies. And what it says is that
00:08:41 --> 00:08:51 they will receive shame instead of glory. The last woe is in verses 18 to 20 and it refers to the idolater.
00:08:51 --> 00:09:04 Idolatry in the Bible is when we worship something less than ourselves and something that is far less than God.
00:09:05 --> 00:09:17 That's idolatry. Worshipping something that is less than ourselves and far less than God. It is speechless. It is powerless. It is therefore useless.
00:09:17 --> 00:09:28 And these Babylonians created idols to give them wisdom and guidance. Their punishment is silence
00:09:28 --> 00:09:37 and no help at all. So what we see in these five woes is that the punishment fits the crime.
00:09:37 --> 00:09:49 And it's by this principle that both Israel and Babylon will be judged. That's God's message to Habakkuk.
00:09:49 --> 00:09:58 God is committed to justice. The wicked will not get away with their evil. God will hold all people
00:09:58 --> 00:10:06 accountable for their actions and punish them accordingly. That's the good news because there's
00:10:06 --> 00:10:10 something in each one of us that says we want justice to be done.
00:10:13 --> 00:10:18 So secondly, what is the source of all this evil and sin and carnage?
00:10:19 --> 00:10:24 What's the core issue here for the Babylonians? What's the source of their evil behavior?
00:10:26 --> 00:10:30 And likewise, the Israelites as well. And you and me.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:37 For the Babylonians, it's too easy to read about these guys and just go,
00:10:37 --> 00:10:40 oh, they're just such awful people. They are brutal people.
00:10:41 --> 00:10:47 They deserve what they got in 539 BC. I would never do that sort of stuff.
00:10:47 --> 00:10:50 We're modern people. We don't believe in that sort of thing.
00:10:50 --> 00:10:57 That is until we look at verse 4 and verse 18.
00:10:58 --> 00:11:01 And we touched on it briefly last week.
00:11:02 --> 00:11:07 It goes on in verse 5 to say he, this is referring to Babylon,
00:11:07 --> 00:11:31 So at the very center of the nation of Babylon,
00:11:31 --> 00:11:41 and likewise Israel and you and me, is this pride, arrogance, an arrogant emptiness almost.
00:11:43 --> 00:11:45 It says here at Babylon, they gather nations to themselves.
00:11:46 --> 00:11:53 They conquer and they kill for their own glory in attempt to build themselves up and to puff themselves up.
00:11:55 --> 00:11:58 They are using people to promote their own glory.
00:11:58 --> 00:12:04 And in verse 16 it says they seek to clothe themselves in glory.
00:12:06 --> 00:12:11 You see, at the heart of the evil Babylonian culture, at the heart of every culture,
00:12:11 --> 00:12:19 at the heart of every life, is an arrogance and a pride that leads to a life of pursuing personal glory,
00:12:20 --> 00:12:26 personal gain, making the world revolve around me.
00:12:28 --> 00:12:33 Now, many of us don't immediately see ourselves in that.
00:12:34 --> 00:12:37 Much easier to identify it in other people.
00:12:37 --> 00:12:40 Much easier when we see pride in other people.
00:12:41 --> 00:12:48 A few would, I think, surpass the boxing legend Muhammad Ali in self-promotion and self-glory.
00:12:48 --> 00:12:52 You go on YouTube and you can see this everywhere.
00:12:53 --> 00:12:55 And for those who are around long enough to hear him speak,
00:12:55 --> 00:12:58 who have been around a while and have heard him speak, would see that clearly.
00:12:59 --> 00:13:06 One person said of Muhammad Ali that he thought that the sun came up every morning just to hear him crow.
00:13:08 --> 00:13:11 Even the rising of the sun was about him.
00:13:11 --> 00:13:15 He roared on and on about how he was the greatest.
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 He bragged about his good looks.
00:13:18 --> 00:13:22 He declared that nothing was impossible for him.
00:13:23 --> 00:13:26 Here's just a couple of more of his more memorable quotes, if you like.
00:13:28 --> 00:13:28 I'm young.
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 I'm handsome.
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 I'm fast.
00:13:32 --> 00:13:34 I cannot possibly be beaten.
00:13:34 --> 00:13:41 He also said, it's hard to be humble when you're as great as I am.
00:13:43 --> 00:13:48 And this one, bragging is when a person says something and they can't do it.
00:13:49 --> 00:13:51 I do everything that I say I'm going to do.
00:13:53 --> 00:13:55 And this one, top it all off.
00:13:56 --> 00:14:01 I'm the most recognized and loved man that ever lived.
00:14:01 --> 00:14:06 Because there was no satellites when Jesus and Moses were around.
00:14:07 --> 00:14:12 So people far away in the villages didn't know about them.
00:14:16 --> 00:14:18 That's a pretty bold statement.
00:14:20 --> 00:14:27 You see, pride is easy to see when you've got that sort of thing on display.
00:14:27 --> 00:14:31 It's not as easy to see our own hearts.
00:14:32 --> 00:14:38 And the reason the Babylonians did what they did and why we do what we do,
00:14:39 --> 00:14:45 even if it is, frankly, like me today, preaching, us gathering together, singing,
00:14:46 --> 00:14:50 moving ahead in our careers, creating artworks, whatever it is,
00:14:50 --> 00:15:02 it's because we are to a great degree insecure and trying to cover ourselves with honor and glory,
00:15:03 --> 00:15:08 trying to fill that aching void that I need to be something.
00:15:08 --> 00:15:18 Now, I, from a young age, grew up being affirmed for my practical skills.
00:15:19 --> 00:15:26 As a child, I would constantly be using my dad's tools and inevitably losing them in some way.
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 I would pull lawnmowers apart.
00:15:28 --> 00:15:31 Wasn't always so skilled in putting them back together, but would certainly pull them apart.
00:15:31 --> 00:15:39 I regularly modified and fixed my first car and would probably take a certain sense of pride.
00:15:39 --> 00:15:44 It would be an element of embarrassment for me if I had to take it to a mechanic to get it fixed.
00:15:44 --> 00:15:46 I figured I could do it myself.
00:15:47 --> 00:15:50 Now, when I was first married a number of years ago,
00:15:50 --> 00:15:59 my wife, Natalie, was unaware at my, if you like, my skill set in this particular area.
00:15:59 --> 00:16:03 And at one particular point, the very early days of our marriage,
00:16:03 --> 00:16:06 we had this old car, little old car, little bomb car, wasn't worth much.
00:16:07 --> 00:16:13 But this little car, the clutch went on it, broke on it, and so I needed to replace it.
00:16:13 --> 00:16:16 And I decided that I was going to do it myself.
00:16:17 --> 00:16:21 I'd done this sort of thing on a number of occasions in the past, thought it was pretty straightforward.
00:16:22 --> 00:16:28 And I was under the car, preparing to pull the clutch out of the car,
00:16:28 --> 00:16:30 all jacked up, ready to go.
00:16:30 --> 00:16:35 And my dear wife appeared in the door of the garage and said to me,
00:16:35 --> 00:16:37 do you know what you're doing?
00:16:39 --> 00:16:44 Oh, I mean, talk about a knife to the ego at that point.
00:16:45 --> 00:16:52 The challenge there to my ego, my sense of worth, my sense of manhood, my pride, my glory.
00:16:52 --> 00:16:58 I was very unhappy about it being questioned, even if it was innocently questioned in that moment.
00:17:00 --> 00:17:04 And so I got out from under the car, walked inside and proceeded to tell her,
00:17:04 --> 00:17:09 and needed to tell her, in fact, how good I was at this sort of thing.
00:17:09 --> 00:17:12 I was doing it to save money and just simply because I can and let me show you.
00:17:12 --> 00:17:16 And before the end of the day, this car is going to be working, going to be driving again,
00:17:16 --> 00:17:18 and we'll show you how good I am at this sort of thing.
00:17:18 --> 00:17:26 So I packed up my bruised ego, went back under the car to prove to her that I knew exactly what I was doing,
00:17:26 --> 00:17:28 and she needed to recognise that in me.
00:17:29 --> 00:17:36 I envisaged taking her for a drive later in the day to demonstrate properly what a working clutch looks like
00:17:36 --> 00:17:39 and my mechanical prowess at the same time.
00:17:40 --> 00:17:44 But in my distraction and frustration in that moment,
00:17:44 --> 00:17:47 I made the mistake of undoing the wrong set of bolts.
00:17:48 --> 00:17:52 And when I pulled the clutch out, what I did was I, in fact,
00:17:52 --> 00:17:55 dropped all the ball bearings out of the whole entire gearbox,
00:17:56 --> 00:17:59 which come dropping on me and all over the floor.
00:18:01 --> 00:18:04 Now, as skilled as I thought that I was,
00:18:05 --> 00:18:07 that's something I can't fix.
00:18:08 --> 00:18:10 I do not have the know-how to fix that.
00:18:10 --> 00:18:15 It would require a gearbox specialist to put that entire thing back together.
00:18:15 --> 00:18:19 And it would cost me more than the value of the car.
00:18:19 --> 00:18:23 And so by the end of the day, instead of taking my wife for a drive,
00:18:23 --> 00:18:25 showing her how good I was as a mechanic,
00:18:26 --> 00:18:30 instead the car was being put on the back of a wrecker truck taken to the wreckers.
00:18:31 --> 00:18:35 The core issue in that moment was my pride.
00:18:35 --> 00:18:42 That pride that resulted in sinful, evil behaviour,
00:18:43 --> 00:18:47 that resulted in me not treating my wife in the way that I should treat her.
00:18:49 --> 00:18:53 And pride is a refusal for me as a human being,
00:18:53 --> 00:18:55 this is the core issue,
00:18:55 --> 00:19:00 for me as a human being not allowing God to be God.
00:19:00 --> 00:19:09 It's a grab at God's status for his glory and trying to keep it for myself.
00:19:10 --> 00:19:12 It's independence from him.
00:19:13 --> 00:19:16 It's a reliance upon myself and my own resources.
00:19:17 --> 00:19:20 And according to the Bible,
00:19:20 --> 00:19:29 this is the cosmic, delusional fantasy of all fantasies.
00:19:30 --> 00:19:32 And it leaves us restless.
00:19:33 --> 00:19:36 It leaves us empty at our centres.
00:19:36 --> 00:19:41 We live lives of fear and anxiety and bluff.
00:19:41 --> 00:19:48 We look everywhere for people to puff up our shaky egos.
00:19:48 --> 00:19:51 It's the foundation of sin,
00:19:52 --> 00:19:54 the source of all evil in the world.
00:19:56 --> 00:19:58 And so I have to ask you, wherever you are right now,
00:19:58 --> 00:20:02 can you see that in yourself at all?
00:20:05 --> 00:20:06 If you don't,
00:20:07 --> 00:20:09 can I just keep tuning in,
00:20:10 --> 00:20:11 keep coming to church,
00:20:11 --> 00:20:13 read the Gospels.
00:20:13 --> 00:20:20 So what we have here is we have pride is at one end of the passage.
00:20:21 --> 00:20:22 And interestingly enough,
00:20:22 --> 00:20:23 at the end of the passage,
00:20:23 --> 00:20:27 we have idolatry in verse 18.
00:20:28 --> 00:20:31 When you live independently of God,
00:20:32 --> 00:20:35 there is never a vacuum.
00:20:35 --> 00:20:40 Something else is worshipped instead.
00:20:41 --> 00:20:44 Something else is put in God's place
00:20:44 --> 00:20:48 to give you a sense of identity and worth.
00:20:48 --> 00:20:53 Every culture and life that is not based on the glory of God
00:20:53 --> 00:20:57 is based on an idol of some description,
00:20:58 --> 00:20:59 an inordinate desire,
00:21:00 --> 00:21:01 a replacement.
00:21:01 --> 00:21:05 And it will take something good
00:21:05 --> 00:21:08 and it will raise it to the ultimate.
00:21:09 --> 00:21:11 That's what idolatry is.
00:21:11 --> 00:21:13 It takes a good gift from God
00:21:13 --> 00:21:16 and raises it to the status in our lives
00:21:16 --> 00:21:18 where it becomes the ultimate thing.
00:21:20 --> 00:21:22 And we do it because of pride.
00:21:22 --> 00:21:25 For instance,
00:21:26 --> 00:21:28 if you enjoy running
00:21:28 --> 00:21:32 and running fast is the way that you feel about yourself
00:21:32 --> 00:21:35 and it's the way that you pick up your fragile ego,
00:21:36 --> 00:21:39 then running becomes the ultimate for you.
00:21:40 --> 00:21:42 But it will never satisfy.
00:21:42 --> 00:21:44 It'll run your body into the ground.
00:21:46 --> 00:21:48 Every one of us takes a good thing
00:21:48 --> 00:21:51 and makes it an ultimate thing.
00:21:51 --> 00:21:55 And we look to that thing to be God for us,
00:21:55 --> 00:21:57 to give us what only God can give us.
00:21:58 --> 00:22:01 It creates a seed of destruction
00:22:01 --> 00:22:02 that will never be satisfied.
00:22:03 --> 00:22:04 There is never any rest.
00:22:06 --> 00:22:10 Pride is in the heart of every human being
00:22:10 --> 00:22:12 and it's the source of every evil.
00:22:14 --> 00:22:16 And so we're no different than the Babylonians.
00:22:16 --> 00:22:21 Our outcomes and our practices might be different,
00:22:21 --> 00:22:23 but at the core we're the same
00:22:23 --> 00:22:26 and therefore we deserve God's punishment
00:22:26 --> 00:22:27 just as they did.
00:22:30 --> 00:22:32 So what's God's solution then?
00:22:33 --> 00:22:35 Is it just a nuclear strike?
00:22:36 --> 00:22:38 What's his solution to our sin and our evil?
00:22:39 --> 00:22:43 Habakkuk knew that everybody in the world was a sinner.
00:22:43 --> 00:22:45 Everyone had pride at the heart.
00:22:46 --> 00:22:49 He also knew that the holiness of God,
00:22:49 --> 00:22:51 the perfection of God,
00:22:52 --> 00:22:54 meant that he cannot ignore it.
00:22:54 --> 00:22:56 He can't just turn a blind eye to it.
00:22:56 --> 00:22:59 In the same way, we don't turn a blind eye to it.
00:23:00 --> 00:23:02 Habakkuk 2, verse 4 teaches
00:23:02 --> 00:23:06 that the only thing that can save us is faith.
00:23:06 --> 00:23:09 So faith in what?
00:23:11 --> 00:23:13 Faith in God's mercy.
00:23:14 --> 00:23:17 And that's in fact what he prays in chapter 3,
00:23:17 --> 00:23:18 which is for next week.
00:23:18 --> 00:23:20 We won't jump into that right now.
00:23:20 --> 00:23:26 And yet, Habakkuk could not see ahead far enough
00:23:26 --> 00:23:30 to how God is going to do that.
00:23:30 --> 00:23:32 He could not see into the future
00:23:32 --> 00:23:34 of how God was going to preserve
00:23:34 --> 00:23:38 both his holy hatred for sin and his justice,
00:23:38 --> 00:23:43 as well as his mercy and his forgiveness for the sinner.
00:23:43 --> 00:23:45 How is God going to hold both of those things together?
00:23:46 --> 00:23:49 You see, sin, like a debt,
00:23:49 --> 00:23:51 requires a penalty to be paid,
00:23:52 --> 00:23:54 either by you or by me.
00:23:54 --> 00:23:58 You come along and steal my iPhone,
00:23:59 --> 00:24:02 either you have to pay me back for that,
00:24:02 --> 00:24:06 or I have to absorb the cost of that.
00:24:06 --> 00:24:08 Someone has to pay a debt.
00:24:09 --> 00:24:11 Someone has to carry the responsibility of cost.
00:24:13 --> 00:24:15 And sin, like a debt,
00:24:16 --> 00:24:19 always requires a penalty to be paid.
00:24:19 --> 00:24:21 There's always a cost that needs to be paid.
00:24:24 --> 00:24:27 And the only way for God,
00:24:27 --> 00:24:30 the only way that he can pardon us
00:24:30 --> 00:24:38 and not judge us is by him absorbing the payment.
00:24:40 --> 00:24:42 This is how the New Testament puts it.
00:24:43 --> 00:24:47 Hebrews chapter 9, verse 26 says this.
00:24:47 --> 00:24:49 This is talking about Jesus.
00:24:49 --> 00:24:52 He has appeared once for all
00:24:52 --> 00:24:54 at the culmination of the ages
00:24:54 --> 00:24:57 to do away with sin
00:24:57 --> 00:25:01 by the sacrifice of himself.
00:25:02 --> 00:25:05 Just as people are destined to die once
00:25:05 --> 00:25:07 because of their sin
00:25:07 --> 00:25:10 and after that to face judgment
00:25:10 --> 00:25:12 because of their sin,
00:25:12 --> 00:25:17 so Christ was sacrificed once
00:25:17 --> 00:25:20 to take away the sin of many.
00:25:21 --> 00:25:24 Jesus, the innocent one,
00:25:24 --> 00:25:26 the only innocent one,
00:25:27 --> 00:25:29 does away with our sin
00:25:29 --> 00:25:33 by willingly taking it upon himself.
00:25:34 --> 00:25:35 Only an innocent one
00:25:35 --> 00:25:38 can suffer for the sake of others.
00:25:38 --> 00:25:44 Jesus turns God's anger away from us
00:25:44 --> 00:25:47 by allowing it to fall on him.
00:25:49 --> 00:25:53 Our destiny is to face the judgment of God
00:25:53 --> 00:25:56 to get from him what we deserve.
00:25:57 --> 00:26:00 Instead, what we see
00:26:00 --> 00:26:02 the second half of verse 28
00:26:02 --> 00:26:04 in Hebrews chapter 9
00:26:04 --> 00:26:07 is he will appear a second time.
00:26:07 --> 00:26:08 Talking about Jesus.
00:26:09 --> 00:26:10 Not to bear sin
00:26:10 --> 00:26:12 but to bring salvation
00:26:12 --> 00:26:14 to those who are waiting for him.
00:26:15 --> 00:26:16 The future is salvation
00:26:16 --> 00:26:18 instead of judgment.
00:26:18 --> 00:26:20 There are those
00:26:20 --> 00:26:21 who are waiting for Jesus
00:26:21 --> 00:26:22 by faith
00:26:22 --> 00:26:24 and by implication
00:26:24 --> 00:26:25 there are those
00:26:25 --> 00:26:26 who are not.
00:26:28 --> 00:26:30 The destiny of the proud
00:26:30 --> 00:26:31 and the idolatrous
00:26:31 --> 00:26:32 like the Babylonians here
00:26:32 --> 00:26:33 in Habakkuk 2
00:26:33 --> 00:26:35 is spelled out for us
00:26:35 --> 00:26:37 in the very next chapter of Hebrews.
00:26:37 --> 00:26:39 Hebrews chapter 10 verse 26
00:26:39 --> 00:26:41 if we deliberately keep on sinning
00:26:41 --> 00:26:42 after we receive
00:26:42 --> 00:26:44 the knowledge of truth
00:26:44 --> 00:26:47 no sacrifice for sins is left
00:26:47 --> 00:26:50 but only a fearful expectation
00:26:50 --> 00:26:51 of judgment
00:26:51 --> 00:26:52 and of raging fire
00:26:52 --> 00:26:53 that will consume
00:26:53 --> 00:26:54 the enemies of God.
00:26:55 --> 00:26:57 Anyone who rejected
00:26:57 --> 00:26:58 the law of Moses
00:26:58 --> 00:26:59 died without mercy
00:26:59 --> 00:26:59 on the testimony
00:26:59 --> 00:27:00 of two or three witnesses.
00:27:01 --> 00:27:02 How much more severely
00:27:03 --> 00:27:04 do you think
00:27:04 --> 00:27:05 someone deserves
00:27:05 --> 00:27:06 to be punished
00:27:06 --> 00:27:08 who has trampled
00:27:08 --> 00:27:09 the Son of God
00:27:09 --> 00:27:11 the work of Jesus
00:27:11 --> 00:27:12 underfoot
00:27:12 --> 00:27:14 who has treated
00:27:14 --> 00:27:16 as an unholy thing
00:27:16 --> 00:27:17 the blood of the covenant
00:27:17 --> 00:27:19 that sanctified them
00:27:19 --> 00:27:20 and who has insulted
00:27:20 --> 00:27:22 the Spirit of grace.
00:27:23 --> 00:27:25 For we know him
00:27:25 --> 00:27:25 who said
00:27:25 --> 00:27:26 it is mine to avenge
00:27:26 --> 00:27:27 I will repay
00:27:27 --> 00:27:28 and again
00:27:28 --> 00:27:29 the Lord will judge
00:27:29 --> 00:27:30 his people
00:27:30 --> 00:27:31 it is a dreadful thing
00:27:31 --> 00:27:32 to fall
00:27:32 --> 00:27:33 into the hands
00:27:33 --> 00:27:33 of the living God.
00:27:36 --> 00:27:37 On that day
00:27:37 --> 00:27:39 it will appear
00:27:39 --> 00:27:40 clearly
00:27:40 --> 00:27:42 to all
00:27:42 --> 00:27:43 how utterly
00:27:43 --> 00:27:45 naive
00:27:45 --> 00:27:47 utterly naive
00:27:47 --> 00:27:49 it was for
00:27:49 --> 00:27:51 billions of people
00:27:51 --> 00:27:51 millions
00:27:51 --> 00:27:52 billions of people
00:27:52 --> 00:27:53 potentially
00:27:53 --> 00:27:54 to live
00:27:54 --> 00:27:55 their lives
00:27:55 --> 00:27:56 as if
00:27:56 --> 00:27:58 the God
00:27:58 --> 00:27:58 who made
00:27:58 --> 00:27:59 this world
00:27:59 --> 00:28:00 for his glory
00:28:00 --> 00:28:02 would never
00:28:02 --> 00:28:02 hold them
00:28:02 --> 00:28:04 or call them
00:28:04 --> 00:28:04 to account
00:28:04 --> 00:28:06 for how little
00:28:06 --> 00:28:06 he has meant
00:28:06 --> 00:28:07 for them
00:28:07 --> 00:28:08 as they have
00:28:08 --> 00:28:09 pursued
00:28:09 --> 00:28:10 glory
00:28:10 --> 00:28:11 for themselves.
00:28:14 --> 00:28:15 This squares
00:28:15 --> 00:28:16 with all
00:28:16 --> 00:28:17 the message
00:28:17 --> 00:28:17 of the Bible
00:28:17 --> 00:28:19 and also
00:28:19 --> 00:28:20 deep down
00:28:20 --> 00:28:21 in our hearts
00:28:21 --> 00:28:23 where we have
00:28:23 --> 00:28:24 a desire
00:28:24 --> 00:28:25 for justice
00:28:25 --> 00:28:26 to be done.
00:28:28 --> 00:28:28 And so
00:28:28 --> 00:28:29 I urge you
00:28:29 --> 00:28:30 urge you
00:28:30 --> 00:28:30 for everyone
00:28:30 --> 00:28:31 who's listening
00:28:31 --> 00:28:31 to me on this
00:28:31 --> 00:28:33 I urge you
00:28:33 --> 00:28:37 are you
00:28:37 --> 00:28:37 ready
00:28:37 --> 00:28:38 to take
00:28:38 --> 00:28:40 your stand
00:28:40 --> 00:28:40 in the divine
00:28:40 --> 00:28:41 courtroom
00:28:41 --> 00:28:43 and hear
00:28:43 --> 00:28:44 the judge
00:28:44 --> 00:28:45 pass an
00:28:45 --> 00:28:46 internal sentence
00:28:46 --> 00:28:47 on you?
00:28:47 --> 00:28:48 Are you ready
00:28:48 --> 00:28:49 for that?
00:28:51 --> 00:28:52 There will
00:28:52 --> 00:28:52 only be
00:28:52 --> 00:28:53 two
00:28:53 --> 00:28:53 verdicts
00:28:53 --> 00:28:53 in that
00:28:53 --> 00:28:54 day
00:28:54 --> 00:28:56 and one
00:28:56 --> 00:28:57 or the
00:28:57 --> 00:28:58 other of
00:28:58 --> 00:28:58 them
00:28:58 --> 00:28:59 will be
00:28:59 --> 00:29:00 passed
00:29:00 --> 00:29:00 on every
00:29:00 --> 00:29:01 single
00:29:01 --> 00:29:01 person
00:29:01 --> 00:29:01 who
00:29:01 --> 00:29:02 has
00:29:02 --> 00:29:02 ever
00:29:02 --> 00:29:02 walked
00:29:02 --> 00:29:02 the
00:29:02 --> 00:29:03 face
00:29:03 --> 00:29:03 of
00:29:03 --> 00:29:03 this
00:29:03 --> 00:29:03 earth
00:29:03 --> 00:29:04 either
00:29:04 --> 00:29:05 condemned
00:29:05 --> 00:29:07 or
00:29:07 --> 00:29:08 justified
00:29:08 --> 00:29:08 made
00:29:08 --> 00:29:09 right in
00:29:09 --> 00:29:09 God's
00:29:09 --> 00:29:10 eyes
00:29:10 --> 00:29:11 through
00:29:11 --> 00:29:11 the
00:29:11 --> 00:29:11 sacrifice
00:29:11 --> 00:29:12 of the
00:29:12 --> 00:29:12 Lord
00:29:12 --> 00:29:12 Jesus.
00:29:14 --> 00:29:15 For
00:29:15 --> 00:29:15 those who
00:29:15 --> 00:29:16 are by
00:29:16 --> 00:29:16 faith
00:29:16 --> 00:29:17 waiting
00:29:17 --> 00:29:17 for
00:29:17 --> 00:29:18 Jesus
00:29:18 --> 00:29:18 there is
00:29:18 --> 00:29:19 hope
00:29:19 --> 00:29:19 in
00:29:19 --> 00:29:19 these
00:29:19 --> 00:29:20 verses
00:29:20 --> 00:29:20 that
00:29:20 --> 00:29:21 shape
00:29:21 --> 00:29:21 our
00:29:21 --> 00:29:22 waiting.
00:29:23 --> 00:29:24 If you
00:29:24 --> 00:29:24 understand
00:29:24 --> 00:29:25 these two
00:29:25 --> 00:29:25 hopes
00:29:25 --> 00:29:26 even in
00:29:26 --> 00:29:26 the
00:29:26 --> 00:29:27 darkness
00:29:27 --> 00:29:27 you can
00:29:27 --> 00:29:28 face
00:29:28 --> 00:29:28 absolutely
00:29:28 --> 00:29:29 anything
00:29:29 --> 00:29:29 this world
00:29:29 --> 00:29:30 throws at
00:29:30 --> 00:29:30 you.
00:29:31 --> 00:29:31 The hope
00:29:31 --> 00:29:31 of verse
00:29:31 --> 00:29:32 20
00:29:32 --> 00:29:33 is that
00:29:33 --> 00:29:33 in all
00:29:33 --> 00:29:34 the dark
00:29:34 --> 00:29:35 times
00:29:35 --> 00:29:36 God
00:29:36 --> 00:29:36 is
00:29:36 --> 00:29:37 sovereign.
00:29:38 --> 00:29:39 It says
00:29:39 --> 00:29:39 the Lord
00:29:39 --> 00:29:40 is in
00:29:40 --> 00:29:41 his holy
00:29:41 --> 00:29:41 temple
00:29:41 --> 00:29:42 let all
00:29:42 --> 00:29:43 the earth
00:29:43 --> 00:29:44 be silent
00:29:44 --> 00:29:44 before him.
00:29:45 --> 00:29:46 This God
00:29:46 --> 00:29:46 is not
00:29:46 --> 00:29:47 done.
00:29:47 --> 00:29:48 He is not
00:29:48 --> 00:29:49 lifeless.
00:29:49 --> 00:29:49 He is not
00:29:49 --> 00:29:50 a lifeless
00:29:50 --> 00:29:50 idol.
00:29:51 --> 00:29:51 He does
00:29:51 --> 00:29:52 not
00:29:52 --> 00:29:52 make
00:29:52 --> 00:29:53 false
00:29:53 --> 00:29:53 promises
00:29:53 --> 00:29:55 that
00:29:55 --> 00:29:55 leave
00:29:55 --> 00:29:56 us
00:29:56 --> 00:29:56 empty.
00:29:58 --> 00:29:59 This
00:29:59 --> 00:30:00 God
00:30:00 --> 00:30:01 rules.
00:30:05 --> 00:30:05 He is
00:30:05 --> 00:30:05 saying
00:30:05 --> 00:30:06 that no
00:30:06 --> 00:30:06 matter
00:30:06 --> 00:30:06 how
00:30:06 --> 00:30:07 bad
00:30:07 --> 00:30:08 things
00:30:08 --> 00:30:08 get
00:30:08 --> 00:30:08 this
00:30:08 --> 00:30:09 God
00:30:09 --> 00:30:09 is
00:30:09 --> 00:30:09 in
00:30:09 --> 00:30:09 control.
00:30:10 --> 00:30:11 He is
00:30:11 --> 00:30:11 not
00:30:11 --> 00:30:12 gone.
00:30:12 --> 00:30:12 Even
00:30:12 --> 00:30:13 when we
00:30:13 --> 00:30:13 totally
00:30:13 --> 00:30:14 screw up
00:30:14 --> 00:30:14 our
00:30:14 --> 00:30:15 lives
00:30:15 --> 00:30:15 he can
00:30:15 --> 00:30:15 turn
00:30:15 --> 00:30:16 that
00:30:16 --> 00:30:16 around.
00:30:17 --> 00:30:18 Bad
00:30:18 --> 00:30:18 things
00:30:18 --> 00:30:18 will
00:30:18 --> 00:30:19 happen
00:30:19 --> 00:30:20 but
00:30:20 --> 00:30:20 God
00:30:20 --> 00:30:20 is
00:30:20 --> 00:30:20 in
00:30:20 --> 00:30:21 it.
00:30:21 --> 00:30:21 He's

00:30:22 --> 00:30:22 it.
00:30:22 --> 00:30:22 Bringing
00:30:22 --> 00:30:23 it
00:30:23 --> 00:30:23 about
00:30:23 --> 00:30:23 for
00:30:23 --> 00:30:23 his
00:30:23 --> 00:30:23 good
00:30:23 --> 00:30:24 purposes
00:30:24 --> 00:30:25 and
00:30:25 --> 00:30:25 he
00:30:25 --> 00:30:25 never
00:30:25 --> 00:30:26 leaves
00:30:26 --> 00:30:26 his
00:30:26 --> 00:30:27 throne.
00:30:29 --> 00:30:29 Even
00:30:29 --> 00:30:30 in
00:30:30 --> 00:30:30 seasons
00:30:30 --> 00:30:30 like
00:30:30 --> 00:30:31 this
00:30:31 --> 00:30:32 where
00:30:32 --> 00:30:32 this
00:30:32 --> 00:30:33 world
00:30:33 --> 00:30:33 is
00:30:33 --> 00:30:34 getting
00:30:34 --> 00:30:34 a
00:30:34 --> 00:30:34 sense
00:30:34 --> 00:30:34 at
00:30:34 --> 00:30:34 the
00:30:34 --> 00:30:35 moment
00:30:35 --> 00:30:35 that
00:30:35 --> 00:30:35 it
00:30:35 --> 00:30:35 is
00:30:35 --> 00:30:36 not
00:30:36 --> 00:30:36 out
00:30:36 --> 00:30:36 of
00:30:36 --> 00:30:36 control
00:30:36 --> 00:30:38 that
00:30:38 --> 00:30:38 should
00:30:38 --> 00:30:39 be
00:30:39 --> 00:30:39 sending
00:30:39 --> 00:30:40 signals
00:30:40 --> 00:30:40 deep
00:30:40 --> 00:30:40 into
00:30:40 --> 00:30:40 our
00:30:40 --> 00:30:41 hearts
00:30:41 --> 00:30:41 to
00:30:41 --> 00:30:41 each
00:30:41 --> 00:30:42 one
00:30:42 --> 00:30:42 of us
00:30:42 --> 00:30:42 to
00:30:42 --> 00:30:42 realize
00:30:42 --> 00:30:43 we
00:30:43 --> 00:30:44 are
00:30:44 --> 00:30:44 not
00:30:44 --> 00:30:44 in
00:30:44 --> 00:30:45 control
00:30:45 --> 00:30:47 but
00:30:47 --> 00:30:47 he
00:30:47 --> 00:30:48 is.
00:30:52 --> 00:30:52 The
00:30:52 --> 00:30:53 second
00:30:53 --> 00:30:53 part
00:30:53 --> 00:30:53 of
00:30:53 --> 00:30:54 the
00:30:54 --> 00:30:54 verse
00:30:54 --> 00:30:55 in
00:30:55 --> 00:30:55 verse
00:30:55 --> 00:30:56 20
00:30:56 --> 00:30:56 is
00:30:56 --> 00:30:56 a
00:30:56 --> 00:30:57 call
00:30:57 --> 00:30:57 for
00:30:57 --> 00:30:57 the
00:30:57 --> 00:30:58 Babylonians
00:30:58 --> 00:30:59 for
00:30:59 --> 00:30:59 Judah
00:30:59 --> 00:31:01 for
00:31:01 --> 00:31:01 us
00:31:01 --> 00:31:02 to
00:31:02 --> 00:31:03 submit
00:31:03 --> 00:31:03 ourselves
00:31:03 --> 00:31:04 to
00:31:04 --> 00:31:04 this
00:31:04 --> 00:31:05 God
00:31:05 --> 00:31:05 and
00:31:05 --> 00:31:06 his
00:31:06 --> 00:31:06 goodness
00:31:06 --> 00:31:11 not
00:31:11 --> 00:31:11 just
00:31:11 --> 00:31:12 in
00:31:12 --> 00:31:12 the
00:31:12 --> 00:31:12 good
00:31:12 --> 00:31:12 times
00:31:12 --> 00:31:13 but
00:31:13 --> 00:31:13 in
00:31:13 --> 00:31:14 the
00:31:14 --> 00:31:14 times
00:31:14 --> 00:31:14 that
00:31:14 --> 00:31:14 we
00:31:14 --> 00:31:14 don't
00:31:14 --> 00:31:15 understand
00:31:15 --> 00:31:16 and
00:31:16 --> 00:31:16 to
00:31:16 --> 00:31:16 wait
00:31:16 --> 00:31:17 upon
00:31:17 --> 00:31:17 him.
00:31:18 --> 00:31:19 The
00:31:19 --> 00:31:19 ultimate
00:31:19 --> 00:31:19 hope
00:31:19 --> 00:31:20 is
00:31:20 --> 00:31:20 in
00:31:20 --> 00:31:20 verse
00:31:20 --> 00:31:21 14
00:31:21 --> 00:31:22 for
00:31:22 --> 00:31:22 the
00:31:22 --> 00:31:22 earth
00:31:22 --> 00:31:22 will
00:31:22 --> 00:31:23 be
00:31:23 --> 00:31:23 filled
00:31:23 --> 00:31:24 with
00:31:24 --> 00:31:24 the
00:31:24 --> 00:31:24 knowledge
00:31:24 --> 00:31:25 of
00:31:25 --> 00:31:25 the
00:31:25 --> 00:31:26 glory
00:31:26 --> 00:31:26 of
00:31:26 --> 00:31:26 the
00:31:26 --> 00:31:26 Lord
00:31:26 --> 00:31:27 as
00:31:27 --> 00:31:27 the
00:31:27 --> 00:31:27 waters
00:31:27 --> 00:31:28 cover
00:31:28 --> 00:31:28 the
00:31:28 --> 00:31:28 sea.
00:31:29 --> 00:31:29 The
00:31:29 --> 00:31:29 day
00:31:29 --> 00:31:30 will
00:31:30 --> 00:31:30 come
00:31:30 --> 00:31:31 when
00:31:31 --> 00:31:31 all

00:31:35 --> 00:31:35 come
00:31:35 --> 00:31:35 to an
00:31:35 --> 00:31:35 end.
00:31:35 --> 00:31:36 Sin
00:31:36 --> 00:31:36 gone
00:31:36 --> 00:31:37 for
00:31:37 --> 00:31:38 and
00:31:38 --> 00:31:38 only
00:31:38 --> 00:31:39 God's
00:31:39 --> 00:31:39 kingdom
00:31:39 --> 00:31:40 will
00:31:40 --> 00:31:40 remain.

00:31:42 --> 00:31:43 kingdoms
00:31:43 --> 00:31:43 such
00:31:43 --> 00:31:43 as
00:31:43 --> 00:31:44 the
00:31:44 --> 00:31:44 Babylonians
00:31:44 --> 00:31:45 in
00:31:45 --> 00:31:45 their
00:31:45 --> 00:31:45 day
00:31:45 --> 00:31:46 will
00:31:46 --> 00:31:46 be
00:31:46 --> 00:31:46 done
00:31:46 --> 00:31:47 away
00:31:47 --> 00:31:47 with.
00:31:48 --> 00:31:48 This
00:31:48 --> 00:31:49 will
00:31:49 --> 00:31:49 be

00:31:51 --> 00:31:51 fulfilled
00:31:51 --> 00:31:51 when
00:31:51 --> 00:31:52 Jesus
00:31:52 --> 00:31:53 returns.
00:31:54 --> 00:31:55 His
00:31:55 --> 00:31:55 is the
00:31:55 --> 00:31:55 only
00:31:55 --> 00:31:56 glory
00:31:56 --> 00:31:56 that
00:31:56 --> 00:31:56 will
00:31:56 --> 00:31:57 last
00:31:57 --> 00:31:57 forever.
00:31:58 --> 00:31:58 This
00:31:58 --> 00:31:59 verse
00:31:59 --> 00:31:59 tells
00:31:59 --> 00:31:59 us
00:31:59 --> 00:32:00 that
00:32:00 --> 00:32:00 someday
00:32:00 --> 00:32:01 we
00:32:01 --> 00:32:02 will
00:32:02 --> 00:32:03 soak
00:32:03 --> 00:32:03 in
00:32:03 --> 00:32:03 it
00:32:03 --> 00:32:04 because
00:32:04 --> 00:32:04 of
00:32:04 --> 00:32:05 Jesus.
00:32:05 --> 00:32:05 His
00:32:05 --> 00:32:06 glory
00:32:06 --> 00:32:06 will
00:32:06 --> 00:32:06 become
00:32:06 --> 00:32:07 ours
00:32:07 --> 00:32:08 as
00:32:08 --> 00:32:08 he
00:32:08 --> 00:32:09 glorifies
00:32:09 --> 00:32:10 us
00:32:10 --> 00:32:10 those
00:32:10 --> 00:32:10 who
00:32:10 --> 00:32:11 trust
00:32:11 --> 00:32:11 in
00:32:11 --> 00:32:11 him.
00:32:11 --> 00:32:12 Jesus
00:32:12 --> 00:32:12 took
00:32:12 --> 00:32:13 our
00:32:13 --> 00:32:13 shame
00:32:13 --> 00:32:14 so
00:32:14 --> 00:32:14 that
00:32:14 --> 00:32:14 when
00:32:14 --> 00:32:14 we
00:32:14 --> 00:32:14 put
00:32:14 --> 00:32:15 our
00:32:15 --> 00:32:15 trust
00:32:15 --> 00:32:16 in
00:32:16 --> 00:32:16 him
00:32:16 --> 00:32:18 God

00:32:19 --> 00:32:19 with
00:32:19 --> 00:32:20 glory
00:32:20 --> 00:32:20 and
00:32:20 --> 00:32:21 honor.
00:32:21 --> 00:32:22 No
00:32:22 --> 00:32:22 more
00:32:22 --> 00:32:22 shame.
00:32:24 --> 00:32:24 We
00:32:24 --> 00:32:25 seek

00:32:26 --> 00:32:26 own
00:32:26 --> 00:32:27 honor
00:32:27 --> 00:32:27 and
00:32:27 --> 00:32:28 therefore
00:32:28 --> 00:32:28 we
00:32:28 --> 00:32:28 deserve
00:32:28 --> 00:32:29 shame.
00:32:29 --> 00:32:30 and
00:32:30 --> 00:32:30 Jesus
00:32:30 --> 00:32:31 took
00:32:31 --> 00:32:31 our
00:32:31 --> 00:32:32 shame
00:32:32 --> 00:32:33 so
00:32:33 --> 00:32:33 that
00:32:33 --> 00:32:34 we
00:32:34 --> 00:32:34 could
00:32:34 --> 00:32:35 receive
00:32:35 --> 00:32:36 his
00:32:36 --> 00:32:36 glory
00:32:36 --> 00:32:37 and
00:32:37 --> 00:32:37 honor.
00:32:38 --> 00:32:39 And
00:32:39 --> 00:32:39 it's
00:32:39 --> 00:32:39 the
00:32:39 --> 00:32:39 only
00:32:39 --> 00:32:40 glory
00:32:40 --> 00:32:41 it's

00:32:41 --> 00:32:41 only
00:32:41 --> 00:32:42 honor
00:32:42 --> 00:32:42 that
00:32:42 --> 00:32:42 can
00:32:42 --> 00:32:43 ultimately
00:32:43 --> 00:32:44 satisfy
00:32:44 --> 00:32:44 the
00:32:44 --> 00:32:45 longings
