00:00:36 --> 00:00:39 do we think pragmatically in youth ministry or do we think theologically?
00:00:40 --> 00:00:43 And so you've got to really think through that because the Americans are pragmatists.
00:00:44 --> 00:00:48 The Americans say, how do we get kids in the door?
00:00:49 --> 00:00:50 That's what they think.
00:00:51 --> 00:00:53 That's not a theological way to think.
00:00:53 --> 00:00:54 It's not an Australian way to think.
00:00:54 --> 00:00:58 We want to think, what does God want us to do?
00:00:58 --> 00:01:00 That's way more important.
00:01:00 --> 00:01:02 So let's think theologically.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:05 Let's think with our Bibles open.
00:01:06 --> 00:01:10 Now, if this was a 40-hour class, we'd spend a whole bunch of time in the Bible.
00:01:11 --> 00:01:15 And so, unfortunately, I've got to rush through some really good God stuff,
00:01:16 --> 00:01:18 which is frustrating for all of us.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:20 But here is a key passage.
00:01:20 --> 00:01:27 To me, this is a central passage in thinking through youth ministry.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:28 It's well known.
00:01:29 --> 00:01:30 1 Corinthians 3.
00:01:31 --> 00:01:33 And God says here, Paul says here,
00:01:34 --> 00:01:35 By the grace God gives me,
00:01:37 --> 00:01:39 I laid a foundation as an expert building in somebody else's building.
00:01:40 --> 00:01:42 Paul goes to Corinth.
00:01:42 --> 00:01:43 He does evangelism.
00:01:44 --> 00:01:46 People become Christians and he leaves.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:49 So he was the expert builder.
00:01:51 --> 00:01:53 And he built this church.
00:01:54 --> 00:01:54 And he says,
00:01:54 --> 00:01:56 But each one should be careful how he builds.
00:01:57 --> 00:02:00 For no one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.
00:02:01 --> 00:02:02 So it's all about Jesus.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:03 That's why we're doing it.
00:02:04 --> 00:02:06 You're preaching Jesus, teaching Jesus,
00:02:06 --> 00:02:07 helping people to love Jesus,
00:02:07 --> 00:02:09 helping people to love each other because of Jesus.
00:02:09 --> 00:02:10 The whole thing is about Jesus.
00:02:10 --> 00:02:13 If any man builds on this foundation,
00:02:13 --> 00:02:15 he's in gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, and straw.
00:02:15 --> 00:02:17 His work will be shown for what it is
00:02:17 --> 00:02:20 because the day will bring it to light.
00:02:22 --> 00:02:23 You're building a house.
00:02:23 --> 00:02:25 Paul says you've got two piles.
00:02:25 --> 00:02:28 Gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, and straw.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:30 Now be clear on this.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:31 In that culture,
00:02:31 --> 00:02:35 you are not going to build a house with gold, silver, costly stones.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:37 It's absurd.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:40 You're going to build a house with wood, hay, or straw.
00:02:40 --> 00:02:42 Like today.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:44 And so Paul says be careful
00:02:44 --> 00:02:47 because there's some really obvious stuff to build with
00:02:47 --> 00:02:49 and it's the wrong stuff.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:53 There's other stuff to build
00:02:53 --> 00:02:56 that you may not even occur to you to build with.
00:02:56 --> 00:02:57 But that's what you're going to build with
00:02:57 --> 00:02:59 because you're actually building a temple.
00:03:00 --> 00:03:02 And you don't build a temple with just straw.
00:03:02 --> 00:03:03 You build a temple with gold.
00:03:04 --> 00:03:05 And so he says,
00:03:06 --> 00:03:08 if anything builds on this foundation with these things,
00:03:08 --> 00:03:09 his work will be shown.
00:03:09 --> 00:03:11 The day will bring it to light.
00:03:11 --> 00:03:12 That's the day of judgment.
00:03:12 --> 00:03:14 It will be revealed with fire.
00:03:15 --> 00:03:17 And the fire will test the quality of each man's work.
00:03:18 --> 00:03:22 So God is going to send the judgment fires on our youth ministries.
00:03:22 --> 00:03:27 So I was with these two awesome ladies for six years at Oakhurst.
00:03:27 --> 00:03:30 Just a tremendous blessing in my life.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:33 I learned so much about youth ministry at Oakhurst.
00:03:33 --> 00:03:36 It was the most fruitful time in my life
00:03:36 --> 00:03:39 for thinking and writing and strategizing
00:03:39 --> 00:03:41 for all sorts of great reasons.
00:03:42 --> 00:03:44 And I'm obviously a lot older than them.
00:03:45 --> 00:03:46 And I'm going to die.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:49 I'm going to go to heaven.
00:03:49 --> 00:03:52 And I think what this passage is saying
00:03:52 --> 00:03:55 is that in some weird way,
00:03:55 --> 00:03:57 God is going to bring my youth group to heaven.
00:03:58 --> 00:04:00 And in my judgment,
00:04:00 --> 00:04:02 I'm going to be surrounded by these youth group kids.
00:04:03 --> 00:04:04 Lonnie's going to be there.
00:04:05 --> 00:04:06 Siara's going to be there.
00:04:06 --> 00:04:07 I don't know how it's going to work.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:08 It's kind of weird.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:11 But suddenly God is going to test them.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:19 And if they stand, I stand.
00:04:19 --> 00:04:23 If they are burned up, I suffer loss.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:23 Verse 15.
00:04:24 --> 00:04:26 He's going to test the quality of each man's work.
00:04:27 --> 00:04:28 If what he's built survives, he receives reward.
00:04:28 --> 00:04:31 If it's burned up, he will suffer loss.
00:04:31 --> 00:04:32 He himself will be saved,
00:04:33 --> 00:04:35 but only as one escaping through the flames.
00:04:35 --> 00:04:37 I'm going to go to heaven no matter what
00:04:37 --> 00:04:38 because I trust in Jesus.
00:04:38 --> 00:04:39 Jesus has taken my sins.
00:04:40 --> 00:04:43 But if I've run this youth group called, you know,
00:04:43 --> 00:04:45 Spew Squad,
00:04:45 --> 00:04:47 and we've just covered ourselves with marshmallows
00:04:47 --> 00:04:48 every week,
00:04:49 --> 00:04:51 and we've done weird things with toothpicks.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:53 By the way, if it involves a toothpick,
00:04:53 --> 00:04:54 you don't do it in youth ministry.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:55 It's a rule.
00:04:56 --> 00:05:00 Eggs, shaving cream, toothpicks at all costs.
00:05:01 --> 00:05:03 We try to toothpick thing in youth group.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:05 Even though we've been in youth ministry 30 years,
00:05:05 --> 00:05:06 just a few months ago, it was dreadful.
00:05:06 --> 00:05:10 And that was the same night we tried memory verse tennis,
00:05:10 --> 00:05:13 where you had to hit and say the memory verse.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:14 We thought it was such a good idea.
00:05:15 --> 00:05:19 You know when it's death from the minute the activity starts?
00:05:19 --> 00:05:21 And we're like, oh, this is awful.
00:05:21 --> 00:05:23 So even in 30 years, we still get it wrong.
00:05:23 --> 00:05:26 Anyway, I'll still be saved,
00:05:26 --> 00:05:29 but only there's one escaping.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:31 Now this passage, man,
00:05:31 --> 00:05:35 it revolves on those nine words.
00:05:35 --> 00:05:37 Two, four, six, eight, nine.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:38 Be careful.
00:05:39 --> 00:05:40 Be careful.
00:05:42 --> 00:05:44 When you buy a youth ministry book,
00:05:44 --> 00:05:45 be careful.
00:05:46 --> 00:05:48 When you read my stuff,
00:05:49 --> 00:05:49 be careful.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:52 When you put a program together,
00:05:52 --> 00:05:53 be careful.
00:05:54 --> 00:05:55 Because you are building on Jesus,
00:05:56 --> 00:05:58 you're building God's temple.
00:05:58 --> 00:06:01 Are you using gold?
00:06:02 --> 00:06:07 So here's one simple barometer for your youth group.
00:06:07 --> 00:06:08 Something I've learned in a long time.
00:06:09 --> 00:06:10 Does your youth group pray?
00:06:11 --> 00:06:12 If your youth group prays,
00:06:13 --> 00:06:15 that's a really good barometer for your youth ministry.
00:06:16 --> 00:06:17 If I come to your youth group,
00:06:18 --> 00:06:19 and you open with prayer,
00:06:19 --> 00:06:21 and there's a prayer time involved,
00:06:21 --> 00:06:23 and when the leader says,
00:06:23 --> 00:06:24 hey guys, we're going to pray,
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 what can we pray for?
00:06:25 --> 00:06:26 And kids say,
00:06:26 --> 00:06:28 could we pray for whatever?
00:06:28 --> 00:06:31 That is a real sign of health.
00:06:31 --> 00:06:32 And that says to me
00:06:32 --> 00:06:36 that there's a real serious building with gold here.
00:06:36 --> 00:06:38 When you say to your youth group,
00:06:38 --> 00:06:39 okay, grab your Bibles.
00:06:39 --> 00:06:41 So I was at the youth group here last night,
00:06:41 --> 00:06:43 and one of the leaders who's here said,
00:06:43 --> 00:06:44 okay, everybody get a Bible.
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 What did the kids do?
00:06:46 --> 00:06:46 They all went and got a Bible.
00:06:48 --> 00:06:49 Okay, we're going to turn to Mark 14.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:50 They open up to Mark 14.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:53 That is a real sign of gold
00:06:53 --> 00:06:56 being woven and built,
00:06:56 --> 00:06:57 and this program is just,
00:06:57 --> 00:06:59 oh, I think, fantastic.
00:06:59 --> 00:07:01 That's a healthy barometer.
00:07:02 --> 00:07:03 When do the kids groan?
00:07:05 --> 00:07:08 Oh, that's a real indicator
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 that something's,
00:07:09 --> 00:07:11 okay, we're going to play a game now
00:07:11 --> 00:07:12 if they go, oh,
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 they're saying something.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 Or if you say, hey,
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 we're going to have a prayer time now
00:07:16 --> 00:07:18 and if the kids go, oh,
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 we want to keep playing the game,
00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 that's a real sign.
00:07:23 --> 00:07:25 So Paul says, build with gold.
00:07:25 --> 00:07:27 Build with gold.
00:07:28 --> 00:07:29 Now here's another one.
00:07:30 --> 00:07:32 This to me is just a fantastic passage.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 You know it.
00:07:33 --> 00:07:34 It's a real famous passage.
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 It's at the end of Acts 2.
00:07:36 --> 00:07:38 Luke, the historian,
00:07:38 --> 00:07:40 gives us kind of a summary passage.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 He does it a few times
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 in the book of Acts.
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 And he says,
00:07:45 --> 00:07:47 just to sum up this wacko,
00:07:47 --> 00:07:50 amazing, fantastic time
00:07:50 --> 00:07:50 in the early church
00:07:50 --> 00:07:52 where there was Pentecost
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 and all this outpouring
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 of the Holy Spirit
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 and thousands of people
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 became Christians
00:07:56 --> 00:07:58 and it was just amazing.
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 He sums it up by saying,
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 this stuff.
00:08:01 --> 00:08:03 Template.
00:08:03 --> 00:08:05 You are looking at a template
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 for youth ministry.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 Right there.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:08 Notice what they were.
00:08:09 --> 00:08:09 They were devoted
00:08:09 --> 00:08:11 to Bible study.
00:08:12 --> 00:08:12 They were devoted
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 to fellowship.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 The word there is
00:08:15 --> 00:08:16 koinonia or koinonia.
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 We have cheapened
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 the word fellowship
00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 in youth ministry.
00:08:21 --> 00:08:21 We have,
00:08:22 --> 00:08:24 what people do culturally
00:08:24 --> 00:08:25 is they take a really good word
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 and they hijack it.
00:08:27 --> 00:08:27 The word gay,
00:08:27 --> 00:08:29 it's a really good word.
00:08:29 --> 00:08:32 Like it's rich in meaning
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 but you can't say it anymore.
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 It's been twisted.
00:08:35 --> 00:08:35 And we've done
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 a similar thing
00:08:36 --> 00:08:36 with fellowship.
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 We call things fellowship
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 that aren't fellowship.
00:08:40 --> 00:08:42 Fellowship is relating
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 to a person
00:08:43 --> 00:08:45 because of the cross of Christ.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:48 So I am deep friends
00:08:48 --> 00:08:48 with Ciara
00:08:48 --> 00:08:50 not because we just connect
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 and we like the same stuff
00:08:51 --> 00:08:53 and we just personality-wise
00:08:53 --> 00:08:53 get along.
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 That's true.
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 But it's because
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 of the cross of Christ.
00:08:56 --> 00:08:58 I relate to her
00:08:58 --> 00:09:00 through Jesus
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 which means
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 much more deep.
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 I'm going to care for her.
00:09:04 --> 00:09:04 I'm going to love her.
00:09:05 --> 00:09:05 I'm going to be with her,
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 mourn when she's mourning,
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 rejoice when she's rejoicing.
00:09:08 --> 00:09:10 I'm going to admonish her.
00:09:10 --> 00:09:10 I'm going to rebuke her.
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 I'm going to warn her.
00:09:12 --> 00:09:14 I'm going to study the Bible with her.
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 It's this awesome term.
00:09:15 --> 00:09:15 That's fellowship.
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 That's what they were devoted to.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 They were devoted to
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 possibly communion,
00:09:21 --> 00:09:21 possibly meals.
00:09:22 --> 00:09:22 People disagree.
00:09:22 --> 00:09:25 And they were devoted to prayer.
00:09:25 --> 00:09:27 Wow, what a great
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 youth group image right there.
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 Everybody looks in and says,
00:09:30 --> 00:09:32 woo, amazing.
00:09:32 --> 00:09:34 And the apostles were doing
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 great stuff.
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 People getting healed.
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 They spent a lot of time together.
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 Notice that in verse 44.
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 They had a lot of commonality together.
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 People kind of wrestle with that.
00:09:44 --> 00:09:44 What does it mean?
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 Does it mean physical stuff?
00:09:46 --> 00:09:46 Does it mean attitudinally?
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 Does it mean doctrinally?
00:09:48 --> 00:09:53 I think it means they were thinking
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 of one mind and spirit.
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 And they, verse 45,
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 they shared their stuff.
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 Generosity.
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 They met a lot.
00:10:01 --> 00:10:01 Verse 46.
00:10:02 --> 00:10:04 Big group, small group.
00:10:04 --> 00:10:06 Big group in the temple courts,
00:10:06 --> 00:10:09 small group eating together in the homes.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:12 They spent a lot of time praising God.
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 People looked in and said,
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 you guys are awesome right here.
00:10:16 --> 00:10:18 And they grew.
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 Amazing passage.
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 Amazing passage.
00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 And so I look at that and I say,
00:10:24 --> 00:10:26 okay, that informs my thinking
00:10:26 --> 00:10:28 in what I want to do.
00:10:28 --> 00:10:30 That is a list of activities.
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 It's not a list of doctrines.
00:10:33 --> 00:10:35 I must believe that Jesus is X.
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 That's really good.
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 I love doctrine.
00:10:37 --> 00:10:37 I'm a doctrine guy.
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 But this is a list of activities.
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 So I read that and I think,
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 okay, if I do that,
00:10:42 --> 00:10:42 I'm building with gold.
00:10:43 --> 00:10:45 And I want to think theologically.
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 And I want to take those activities
00:10:47 --> 00:10:49 and put them into place in my youth group.
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 And so how do I do that?
00:10:52 --> 00:10:52 That's the question.
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 That's where we're going right now.
00:10:54 --> 00:10:57 So I'm going to build my youth program
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 on three pillars.
00:10:59 --> 00:11:01 So those of you who need a model of youth ministry,
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 here it comes.
00:11:02 --> 00:11:07 For those of you who know my stuff,
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 this is a little bit,
00:11:10 --> 00:11:12 I'm taking build, reach, and flow.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 If you don't know what I'm talking about,
00:11:13 --> 00:11:13 don't worry about it.
00:11:13 --> 00:11:15 I'm taking build, reach, and flow
00:11:15 --> 00:11:17 and I'm trying to work it a little bit,
00:11:17 --> 00:11:19 make it a little bit thicker.
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 So build, reach, and flow fits into this.
00:11:21 --> 00:11:24 We're not going to talk much about build, reach, and flow today.
00:11:24 --> 00:11:24 You can read about it.
00:11:26 --> 00:11:28 But I want to build my house on three pillars.
00:11:28 --> 00:11:31 And this is real obvious stuff,
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 but I'm telling you,
00:11:32 --> 00:11:34 the more I think about it,
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 I think it changes everything.
00:11:36 --> 00:11:36 I think it changes everything.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:39 Our pillar number one is we're a Christian youth group.
00:11:41 --> 00:11:43 When I came to Australia,
00:11:43 --> 00:11:45 I immediately fell in love with Australia.
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 It changed my life.
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 But I didn't get Australia.
00:11:50 --> 00:11:53 I didn't get Australia until I got cricket.
00:11:53 --> 00:11:55 I won't bore you with the story,
00:11:55 --> 00:12:00 but it was during beach mission season.
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 All my friends had gone.
00:12:01 --> 00:12:03 I was going so insane
00:12:03 --> 00:12:04 that I turned on Channel 9 and watched the cricket.
00:12:05 --> 00:12:07 For an American, that's insanity.
00:12:08 --> 00:12:10 And over the course of five days,
00:12:11 --> 00:12:15 and a lot of phone calls,
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 what's a Googly, what's a Yorker,
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 you know,
00:12:18 --> 00:12:22 everything opened up.
00:12:23 --> 00:12:26 I understood so much about Australia
00:12:26 --> 00:12:28 that just led to a whole bunch of thinking
00:12:28 --> 00:12:30 and led to quite a deep desire
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 for me to become an Australian.
00:12:33 --> 00:12:35 Now I'm trying to wrestle with hockey.
00:12:36 --> 00:12:38 Hockey's a really weird sport.
00:12:39 --> 00:12:39 I don't get it.
00:12:40 --> 00:12:43 Like, you lose your teeth when you play.
00:12:44 --> 00:12:45 It just seems like,
00:12:45 --> 00:12:46 welcome to the hockey team,
00:12:46 --> 00:12:48 you won't be needing those anymore.
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 LAUGHTER
00:12:49 --> 00:12:56 But our college has a gym.
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 It's in a balcony.
00:12:58 --> 00:13:00 I'm doing the elliptical
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 because I'm really not good
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 at anything else these days.
00:13:02 --> 00:13:05 If it involves a heavy object, forget it.
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 So I just do this.
00:13:06 --> 00:13:06 Woo!
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 And I watch the hockey
00:13:08 --> 00:13:11 because every institution in Australia
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 has to have a hockey rink,
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 in Canada,
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 has to have a hockey rink.
00:13:14 --> 00:13:16 So I'm watching hockey.
00:13:17 --> 00:13:19 And then there'll be a hockey match.
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 And I'm watching the parents.
00:13:22 --> 00:13:24 And I'm watching the coach.
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 Now I don't know if you know hockey.
00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 I never knew this.
00:13:26 --> 00:13:28 But the team doesn't stay out
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 for longer than 90 seconds.
00:13:29 --> 00:13:32 So you have four guys race out.
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 And it's so fast
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 that they hyperventilate.
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 And they come back in
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 and four more guys goes out.
00:13:38 --> 00:13:41 And they have four sets of four guys.
