00:00:03 --> 00:00:09 That's really the question that we're unpacking over the course of this series.
00:00:09 --> 00:00:10 It's an important question.
00:00:11 --> 00:00:15 It's an important question for those of us who would say that we are Christian
00:00:15 --> 00:00:15
00:00:30 --> 00:00:35 because it's in fact possible that you have rejected Christianity
00:00:35 --> 00:00:40 on a false assumption of what Christianity actually is about
00:00:40 --> 00:00:42 and what it means to be a Christian.
00:00:43 --> 00:00:47 And so if you are new amongst us today, welcome.
00:00:47 --> 00:00:58 It's a great day to be in church because today we get to the heart of the Christian message today.
00:00:58 --> 00:01:00 What it fundamentally is all about.
00:01:01 --> 00:01:05 And it's crucial because you could sit in church for decades
00:01:05 --> 00:01:08 and not understand what we're unpacking this morning.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:12 You could call yourself a Christian for decades
00:01:12 --> 00:01:16 and not understand what it is that we're unpacking this morning.
00:01:16 --> 00:01:20 The language of the New Testament is that a Christian is someone who is in Christ.
00:01:21 --> 00:01:23 Ash has already said that.
00:01:23 --> 00:01:30 A Christian is someone who's united to Christ in such a way that everything that is Christ,
00:01:30 --> 00:01:34 everything that is his, all that he is, belongs to you, the Christian.
00:01:35 --> 00:01:41 And so today we're discovering how do we get into Christ?
00:01:41 --> 00:01:45 That's the key thing that we're looking at today.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:48 And I've got four points.
00:01:48 --> 00:01:55 Unfortunately, I didn't get it done in time late last night in order to get it on the app.
00:01:56 --> 00:02:03 So you'll just have to take notes or re-watch it later or something or get a copy.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:05 Actually, you've got copies of it in front of you probably.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:08 Okay, first of all, I've got four points.
00:02:08 --> 00:02:11 First one is the need for justification.
00:02:11 --> 00:02:13 Verse 21, Romans 3.
00:02:14 --> 00:02:19 But now apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been made known.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:24 Now, the word righteousness there is a word that we're not necessarily familiar with in the English language.
00:02:24 --> 00:02:27 We don't kind of talk about it much, really.
00:02:27 --> 00:02:29 It's not something that just flows around.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:34 But the word righteousness in Romans 3, in fact, in the book of Romans,
00:02:34 --> 00:02:39 is the same Greek word as the word justify.
00:02:39 --> 00:02:40 Justify.
00:02:41 --> 00:02:42 Justify.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:47 So to justify your existence, if you like.
00:02:47 --> 00:02:52 And so righteousness is, another way of understanding it,
00:02:52 --> 00:02:58 is a performance record that validates you and removes barriers.
00:03:00 --> 00:03:01 That's what righteousness is.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:05 For instance, it's similar to a resume.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:11 You have a resume, a CV, and it's a record of your employment history,
00:03:11 --> 00:03:13 your accomplishments, your experiences.
00:03:14 --> 00:03:19 And the purpose of a resume is to open doors for me,
00:03:19 --> 00:03:25 to start a conversation, to potentially get a job.
00:03:26 --> 00:03:29 But without the resume, you don't even get the door opened.
00:03:29 --> 00:03:38 It's about the resume is the possibility of finding acceptance, approval,
00:03:39 --> 00:03:40 of being granted something.
00:03:42 --> 00:03:45 An academic record is the same thing.
00:03:45 --> 00:03:49 You want to apply to get into a university, academic record does the same thing.
00:03:49 --> 00:03:53 Without the academic record, you're not going to get the door of university open to you.
00:03:53 --> 00:03:58 Interesting enough, it happens right through all of life.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:01 All the way through life.
00:04:02 --> 00:04:06 Even on a social level, the clothes you wear, the cars we drive,
00:04:06 --> 00:04:08 the suburbs we live in, the holidays we have,
00:04:08 --> 00:04:18 all the things that are an attempt to get into an approval in a particular social group,
00:04:18 --> 00:04:25 or a family, or even in my own sense, that I fit as part of this society.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:33 And all of our records of righteousness in their various degrees are ways of saying,
00:04:33 --> 00:04:35 please approve of me.
00:04:36 --> 00:04:37 Please accept me.
00:04:38 --> 00:04:39 Here is my record.
00:04:40 --> 00:04:42 And everybody is doing it.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:47 Everybody is seeking righteousness, seeking justification,
00:04:48 --> 00:04:50 seeking validation, acceptance, approval.
00:04:50 --> 00:04:52 It's not just a religious thing.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:56 One of the best pictures of this is the,
00:04:56 --> 00:04:58 it's in the epic movie, Chariots of Fire.
00:04:59 --> 00:05:07 It chronicles the rise of two Scottish sprinters up to the 1924 Olympics.
00:05:07 --> 00:05:12 And it was the 100 meter sprint.
00:05:12 --> 00:05:16 One of those sprinters was a guy named Harold Abrahams,
00:05:16 --> 00:05:18 who went on to win the gold medal.
00:05:18 --> 00:05:21 And Abrahams famously said,
00:05:21 --> 00:05:26 I've got 10 lonely seconds to justify my whole existence.
00:05:28 --> 00:05:30 When he was asked, why are you training so hard?
00:05:30 --> 00:05:31 Why are you putting all this effort into the 100?
00:05:32 --> 00:05:36 I've got 10 seconds to justify my whole existence.
00:05:36 --> 00:05:41 He ran in order to prove himself to others that he mattered.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:43 He ran to justify himself,
00:05:44 --> 00:05:47 to know that he was worthy, acceptable.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:52 Another example, Academy Award winning filmmaker Sidney Pollack
00:05:52 --> 00:05:59 famously expressed that making movies was his way of justifying his existence.
00:05:59 --> 00:06:05 Not long before he died, his family was pleading with him.
00:06:05 --> 00:06:05 He was sick.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:07 And they knew he was dying.
00:06:07 --> 00:06:11 They were pleading with him to stop making movies because it's killing you.
00:06:11 --> 00:06:13 The whole process is killing you.
00:06:13 --> 00:06:15 And this is what he said in an interview.
00:06:16 --> 00:06:20 Although the grueling filmmaking process is wearing me down,
00:06:20 --> 00:06:25 I cannot justify my existence if I'm not creating something.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 Of course, the great irony of it is,
00:06:29 --> 00:06:32 because he had to keep making movies.
00:06:32 --> 00:06:33 Because he had to keep making movies,
00:06:33 --> 00:06:35 then it clearly wasn't justifying his existence.
00:06:36 --> 00:06:41 It clearly wasn't filling up that thing that was inside of him that needed justification.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:46 We do it in all kinds of different ways.
00:06:46 --> 00:06:50 For instance, if being a parent with good and happy kids is our justification,
00:06:51 --> 00:06:58 then psychologists will tell you that's a sure way of ensuring the kids are not good and they're miserable.
00:06:58 --> 00:07:04 If that's your justification, it will never be your justification.
00:07:04 --> 00:07:09 All self-justification is fragile.
00:07:09 --> 00:07:12 All of it's fragile.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:19 One more movie, just one more gold medal, one more promotion,
00:07:19 --> 00:07:23 the kids being perfect,
00:07:23 --> 00:07:27 or as the late American businessman and the world's very first billionaire,
00:07:28 --> 00:07:29 John D. Rockefeller said,
00:07:29 --> 00:07:31 just one more million and I feel I'm okay.
00:07:33 --> 00:07:34 Just one more million.
00:07:34 --> 00:07:40 You see, the problem is,
00:07:40 --> 00:07:42 deep down,
00:07:42 --> 00:07:45 deep, deep, deep down inside of us,
00:07:45 --> 00:07:47 we all know that we should be better than we are.
00:07:47 --> 00:07:50 And so justifying our existence
00:07:50 --> 00:07:53 for all of us is something that we do,
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 but for all of us,
00:07:54 --> 00:07:56 it's just, it's out of reach.
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 One more million,
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 one more gold medal,
00:07:59 --> 00:08:00 just out of reach.
00:08:02 --> 00:08:04 All of us want a life that counts
00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 and are worthy and are worthy enough
00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 in order to be accepted by others,
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 approved of.
00:08:09 --> 00:08:11 All of us want that validation.
00:08:11 --> 00:08:14 Every culture and society does exactly the same thing,
00:08:14 --> 00:08:16 even if it looks different
00:08:16 --> 00:08:19 in how we might pursue that validation,
00:08:19 --> 00:08:20 that justification,
00:08:21 --> 00:08:21 that righteousness.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 And that's why
00:08:24 --> 00:08:26 every culture
00:08:26 --> 00:08:28 and every religion
00:08:28 --> 00:08:30 thinks it's the same
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 when it comes to God.
00:08:31 --> 00:08:35 To get in with the divine,
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 to get in with a God,
00:08:37 --> 00:08:40 requires a spiritual
00:08:40 --> 00:08:42 and a moral resume
00:08:42 --> 00:08:44 of our performance
00:08:44 --> 00:08:45 that says,
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 please validate me,
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 please accept me,
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 please approve of me,
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 please justify me,
00:08:51 --> 00:08:53 please find me righteous.
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 And so we develop
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 our record of righteousness
00:08:57 --> 00:08:59 and hope in the end
00:08:59 --> 00:09:00 that we will be accepted.
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 And the problem
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 with self-justification
00:09:04 --> 00:09:06 is that all of us know
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 that we should be far better
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 than we are.
00:09:09 --> 00:09:09 Forget about living
00:09:09 --> 00:09:11 according to anyone else's standards.
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 Forget about living
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 to the divine standards.
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 Forget about living
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 even in obedience
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 to the Ten Commandments.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:18 Forget about all of that.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 None of us even live up
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 to our own standards.
00:09:22 --> 00:09:25 And that's why
00:09:25 --> 00:09:27 we're constantly pursuing it.
00:09:28 --> 00:09:30 In the chapter before this,
00:09:31 --> 00:09:32 in Romans 3,
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 Paul writes,
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 you therefore have no excuse,
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 you who pass judgment
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 on someone else,
00:09:38 --> 00:09:40 for at whatever point
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 you judge another,
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 you're condemning yourself.
00:09:44 --> 00:09:46 Because you who pass judgment
00:09:46 --> 00:09:48 do the same things.
00:09:48 --> 00:09:51 And so when you,
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 a mere human being,
00:09:52 --> 00:09:54 pass judgment on them
00:09:54 --> 00:09:56 and yet do the same things,
00:09:56 --> 00:09:56 do you think
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 that you'll escape
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 God's judgment?
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 He's saying there,
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 there's not a single
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 human being
00:10:04 --> 00:10:06 who is able to live up
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 to their own convictions
00:10:08 --> 00:10:10 of what is right and wrong,
00:10:10 --> 00:10:12 let alone to God's.
00:10:13 --> 00:10:15 How can we possibly
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 justify ourselves,
00:10:17 --> 00:10:17 validate ourselves,
00:10:18 --> 00:10:22 if we can't live up
00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 to even our own standards?
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 And it's important.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 Because the word justification
00:10:31 --> 00:10:34 is a word that belongs
00:10:34 --> 00:10:36 to a law court setting.
00:10:38 --> 00:10:40 Where God is viewed
00:10:40 --> 00:10:42 as the judge
00:10:42 --> 00:10:44 and we are the accused
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 before him.
00:10:45 --> 00:10:49 And by our own standards,
00:10:50 --> 00:10:52 the evidence is against us.
00:10:53 --> 00:10:55 Just by our own standards.
00:10:58 --> 00:11:00 And so verses 22 to 23
00:11:00 --> 00:11:02 say that all of us
00:11:02 --> 00:11:02 stand accused.
00:11:03 --> 00:11:03 There's no difference
00:11:03 --> 00:11:05 between Jew and Gentile.
00:11:05 --> 00:11:05 In other words,
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 for all of humanity,
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 all have sinned
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 and fall short
00:11:10 --> 00:11:12 of the glory of God.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:16 What Paul's pointing to here
00:11:16 --> 00:11:18 is that early in Romans,
00:11:19 --> 00:11:21 he's writing that
00:11:21 --> 00:11:23 humanity,
00:11:24 --> 00:11:24 people,
00:11:25 --> 00:11:25 us,
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 we were made
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 by God
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 in his likeness
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 to bring him glory
00:11:29 --> 00:11:31 and to enjoy his glory.
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 And sin
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 is the rejection
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 of the God
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 who has made us.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:39 And so we have lost
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 his glory.
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 Sin means we can't
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 be in relationship
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 with him.
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 We rebel against him.
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 We want to live life
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 without him.
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 And we,
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 therefore,
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 do not enjoy
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 his approval.
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 We do not have
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 a right standing
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 before him.
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 We are not justified
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 before him.
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 We stand
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 accused
00:12:00 --> 00:12:02 and condemned
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 before him.
00:12:03 --> 00:12:06 And earlier
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 in chapter 3,
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 we are told
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 that all of us,
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 the religious
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 and the non-religious,
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 are under sin.
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 The moral
00:12:14 --> 00:12:14 and the immoral
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 are under sin.
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 Our condition
00:12:18 --> 00:12:21 is all the same.
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 Our legal standing
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 before God
00:12:24 --> 00:12:27 is not justified.
00:12:28 --> 00:12:30 There is no degrees
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 of unrighteousness
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 and justification.
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 We are all
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 unrighteous.
00:12:39 --> 00:12:41 And then Paul
00:12:41 --> 00:12:41 writes
00:12:41 --> 00:12:43 these words
00:12:43 --> 00:12:45 in Romans 3.
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 But now,
00:12:48 --> 00:12:52 for the first
00:12:52 --> 00:12:52 time
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 ever
00:12:53 --> 00:12:55 and for the
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 only time
00:12:56 --> 00:12:56 ever,
00:12:58 --> 00:12:59 the righteousness,
00:13:00 --> 00:13:00 the justification
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 of God
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 has been made
00:13:02 --> 00:13:02 known.
00:13:03 --> 00:13:05 in other words,
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 what he's saying
00:13:06 --> 00:13:06 here is,
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 this is a totally
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 new approach
00:13:09 --> 00:13:09 to getting in
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 with God
00:13:10 --> 00:13:11 and it's just
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 been revealed.
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 And what has
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 been revealed
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 is that the
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 righteousness of God,
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 the justification
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 of God,
00:13:20 --> 00:13:20 the perfect
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 record,
00:13:22 --> 00:13:22 the validation
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 of God
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 has been
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 revealed.
00:13:25 --> 00:13:25 revealed.
00:13:26 --> 00:13:28 And it puts
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 an end,
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 what it does,
00:13:30 --> 00:13:30 it puts
00:13:30 --> 00:13:30 an end
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 to all
00:13:31 --> 00:13:31 of our
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 striving
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 and struggling
00:13:33 --> 00:13:35 for self-validation
00:13:35 --> 00:13:39 because the
00:13:39 --> 00:13:39 righteousness
00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 has been
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 revealed.
00:13:41 --> 00:13:41 world.
00:13:45 --> 00:13:46 It's a gift.
00:13:48 --> 00:13:48 And here's the
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 gift.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 None of us
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 can justify
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 ourselves.
00:13:56 --> 00:13:56 And verse
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 24 says,
00:13:57 --> 00:13:58 all are
00:13:58 --> 00:13:58 justified
00:13:58 --> 00:14:00 freely
00:14:00 --> 00:14:01 by his
00:14:01 --> 00:14:02 grace
00:14:02 --> 00:14:03 through the
00:14:03 --> 00:14:03 redemption
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 that came
00:14:04 --> 00:14:05 by Christ
00:14:05 --> 00:14:05 Jesus.
00:14:06 --> 00:14:07 Justified
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 freely.
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 Now the
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 word freely
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 there
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 is really
00:14:16 --> 00:14:17 important.
00:14:17 --> 00:14:21 it's
00:14:21 --> 00:14:21 used
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 in
00:14:22 --> 00:14:22 another
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 place
00:14:23 --> 00:14:23 in the
00:14:23 --> 00:14:23 New
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 Testament
00:14:24 --> 00:14:25 in
00:14:25 --> 00:14:25 John
00:14:25 --> 00:14:26 chapter
00:14:26 --> 00:14:27 15
00:14:27 --> 00:14:28 verse 25
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 when
00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 Jesus

00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 reason,
00:14:48 --> 00:14:48 without
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 cause.
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 And the
00:14:51 --> 00:14:51 word freely
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 means there
00:14:52 --> 00:14:53 in a way
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 that is
00:14:54 --> 00:14:54 totally,
00:14:55 --> 00:14:55 completely
00:14:55 --> 00:14:57 unwarranted.
00:15:01 --> 00:15:02 It is
00:15:02 --> 00:15:03 something that
00:15:03 --> 00:15:03 is given
00:15:03 --> 00:15:03 or done
00:15:03 --> 00:15:04 for no
00:15:04 --> 00:15:04 reason at
00:15:04 --> 00:15:05 all.
00:15:06 --> 00:15:07 It's
00:15:07 --> 00:15:07 unwarranted.
00:15:09 --> 00:15:10 And here
00:15:10 --> 00:15:11 we
00:15:11 --> 00:15:12 penetrate
00:15:12 --> 00:15:13 into the
00:15:13 --> 00:15:14 core
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 difference
00:15:15 --> 00:15:15 between
00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 Christianity
00:15:16 --> 00:15:17 and
00:15:17 --> 00:15:17 every
00:15:17 --> 00:15:18 other
00:15:18 --> 00:15:18 world
00:15:18 --> 00:15:19 religion.
00:15:20 --> 00:15:20 We
00:15:20 --> 00:15:21 become,
00:15:21 --> 00:15:21 a
00:15:21 --> 00:15:22 Christian
00:15:22 --> 00:15:22 becomes
00:15:22 --> 00:15:23 acceptable
00:15:23 --> 00:15:23 and
00:15:23 --> 00:15:24 beautiful

00:15:24 --> 00:15:25 God
00:15:25 --> 00:15:26 not
00:15:26 --> 00:15:26 by
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 what
00:15:27 --> 00:15:27 we
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 bring
00:15:28 --> 00:15:30 but
00:15:30 --> 00:15:30 by
00:15:30 --> 00:15:30 what
00:15:30 --> 00:15:31 Christ
00:15:31 --> 00:15:32 brings.
00:15:33 --> 00:15:33 Not
00:15:33 --> 00:15:34 by what
00:15:34 --> 00:15:34 we
00:15:34 --> 00:15:35 do
00:15:35 --> 00:15:36 but
00:15:36 --> 00:15:36 what
00:15:36 --> 00:15:37 Christ

00:15:37 --> 00:15:38 done.

00:15:40 --> 00:15:41 glorious
00:15:41 --> 00:15:41 reality
00:15:41 --> 00:15:42 is
00:15:42 --> 00:15:42 expressed
00:15:42 --> 00:15:43 in one
00:15:43 --> 00:15:43 of the
00:15:43 --> 00:15:43 most
00:15:43 --> 00:15:44 significant
