00:00:00 --> 00:00:04 Today we are in a really painful part of the Bible.
00:00:04 --> 00:00:08 It's arguably one of the lowest points in Israel's history.
00:00:09 --> 00:00:10 It's very confronting.
00:00:11 --> 00:00:21 Today we are talking about the depths of human depravity, of rape, objectification, murder, domestic violence.
00:00:21 --> 00:00:25 We're talking about sinfulness revealed bare.
00:00:25 --> 00:00:30 Anyway, it's one of the rock-bottom moments of Israel's history.
00:00:30 --> 00:00:36 One which makes you think about who these people are and who their God is that they worship.
00:00:37 --> 00:00:41 Have you ever had a rock-bottom moment in your life?
00:00:41 --> 00:00:46 One which makes you think about who you are?
00:00:46 --> 00:00:49 They're not really nice to think about once they're passed.
00:00:50 --> 00:00:52 They're not enjoyable to recall.
00:00:52 --> 00:00:57 You know, it's not nice to think about painful mistakes we've made in the past.
00:00:57 --> 00:01:03 But this is what today's passage and the final sermon in our Judges series will do.
00:01:04 --> 00:01:11 We're going to be confronted by the depths of human sin and depravity, and it should make us question our own hearts.
00:01:12 --> 00:01:14 And I'm up here saying this now before the Bible reading.
00:01:14 --> 00:01:19 We're looking at Judges 19 to 21.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:22 We're going to look in particular at Judges 19.
00:01:22 --> 00:01:26 And so I'm up here saying this now before we read to prepare us.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:29 Because this passage we'll be confronting.
00:01:30 --> 00:01:33 It might reveal something about you that you need to bring to the Lord.
00:01:34 --> 00:01:37 It might remind you of painful things in your past.
00:01:38 --> 00:01:40 This is a horrible part of the Bible.
00:01:41 --> 00:01:44 It might be a painful trigger for some of us here.
00:01:44 --> 00:01:49 It might trigger painful memories of the past.
00:01:49 --> 00:01:52 And if it does, please feel free to walk out.
00:01:52 --> 00:01:53 Sit up the back.
00:01:54 --> 00:01:56 Meet with Debbie, who's just over in the corner.
00:01:56 --> 00:01:59 Because your safety is really important to us.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:00 And so I'm going to pray.
00:02:00 --> 00:02:03 And then John's going to come up and read Judges 19.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:12 Dear Heavenly Father, as we look at your word to us this morning, it is not an easy word to come to.
00:02:12 --> 00:02:21 Father, I ask that you would comfort us and give us humility as we come before your word this morning.
00:02:21 --> 00:02:21 Amen.

00:02:28 --> 00:02:29 Judges 19.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:34 In those days, Israel had no king.
00:02:35 --> 00:02:43 Now a Nephi, who lived in a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim, took a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:45 But she was unfaithful to him.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:50 She left him and went back to her parents' home in Bethlehem, Judah.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:56 After she had been there four months, her husband went to her to pursue her to return.
00:02:56 --> 00:03:00 He had with him his servant and two donkeys.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:03 She took him into her parents' home.
00:03:04 --> 00:03:07 And when her father saw him, he gladly welcomed him.
00:03:08 --> 00:03:13 His father-in-law, the woman's father, prevailed on him to stay.
00:03:13 --> 00:03:18 So he remained with him three days, eating and drinking and sleeping there.
00:03:18 --> 00:03:24 On the fourth day, they got up early and he prepared to leave.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:26 But the woman's father said to his son-in-law,
00:03:27 --> 00:03:30 Refresh yourself with something to eat, then you can go.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:33 So the two of them sat down and eat and drink together.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:36 Afterward, the woman's father said,
00:03:36 --> 00:03:39 Please stay tonight and enjoy yourself.
00:03:39 --> 00:03:43 And when the man got up to go, his father-in-law pursued him.
00:03:44 --> 00:03:46 So he stayed there that night.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:50 On the morning of the fifth day, when he rose to go,
00:03:50 --> 00:03:51 the woman's father said,
00:03:51 --> 00:03:53 Refresh yourself, wait till afternoon.
00:03:54 --> 00:03:56 So the two of them ate together.
00:03:56 --> 00:04:02 Then when the man with his concubine and his servant got up to leave,
00:04:02 --> 00:04:05 his father-in-law, the woman's father, said,
00:04:05 --> 00:04:07 Now look, it's almost evening.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:08 Spend the nights here.
00:04:09 --> 00:04:10 The day is nearly over.
00:04:11 --> 00:04:12 Stay and enjoy yourself.
00:04:13 --> 00:04:16 Early tomorrow morning, you can get up and be on your way home.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:19 But unwilling to stay another night,
00:04:19 --> 00:04:22 the man left and went up towards Juppus.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:24 That is Jerusalem.
00:04:24 --> 00:04:28 Jerusalem with his two settled donkeys and his concubine.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:32 When they were near Juppus and the day was almost gone,
00:04:33 --> 00:04:34 the servant said to his master,
00:04:35 --> 00:04:39 Come, let's stop at this city of the Juppusite and spend the night.
00:04:40 --> 00:04:41 His master replied,
00:04:41 --> 00:04:46 No, we wouldn't go into any city whose people are not Israelites.
00:04:46 --> 00:04:48 We will go on to Gilbite.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:50 He added,
00:04:50 --> 00:04:57 Come, let's try to reach Gilbite and Roma and spend the night in one of those places.
00:04:57 --> 00:04:58 So they went on,
00:04:59 --> 00:05:03 and the sun set as they near Gilbite in Benjamin.
00:05:04 --> 00:05:06 There they stopped to spend the night.
00:05:06 --> 00:05:08 They went and sat in the city square,
00:05:09 --> 00:05:10 but no one took them in for the night.
00:05:10 --> 00:05:13 That evening, an old man came,
00:05:13 --> 00:05:15 an old man from the hill country of Ephraim,
00:05:16 --> 00:05:17 who was living in Gilbite,
00:05:18 --> 00:05:24 and the inhabitants of place where Benjamin came in from his work in the fields.
00:05:25 --> 00:05:28 And he looked and saw the traveler in the city square.
00:05:28 --> 00:05:29 The old man asked,
00:05:29 --> 00:05:30 Where are you going?
00:05:31 --> 00:05:32 Where do you come from?
00:05:32 --> 00:05:33 He answered,
00:05:33 --> 00:05:37 We are on our way from Bethlehem to Judah,
00:05:37 --> 00:05:40 to a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim, where I live.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:42 I have been to Bethlehem in Judah,
00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 and now I am going to the house of the Lord.
00:05:45 --> 00:05:47 No one has taken me in for the night.
00:05:48 --> 00:05:52 We have both straw and folder for our donkeys,
00:05:52 --> 00:05:55 and bread and wine for ourselves, your servants, me.
00:05:55 --> 00:05:57 The woman and the young man with us.
00:05:58 --> 00:05:59 We don't need anything.
00:05:59 --> 00:06:03 You are welcome at my house, the old man said.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:05 Let me supply whatever you need.
00:06:05 --> 00:06:08 Only don't spend the night in the square.
00:06:09 --> 00:06:12 So he took him into his house and fled his donkeys.
00:06:12 --> 00:06:14 After they had washed their feet,
00:06:14 --> 00:06:16 they have something to eat and drink.
00:06:16 --> 00:06:18 While they were enjoying themselves,
00:06:18 --> 00:06:21 some of the wicked men of the city surrendered the house,
00:06:21 --> 00:06:22 pointing at the door,
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 and they shouted to the old man who owned the house,
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 Bring out the man to come up to your house,
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 so we can have sex with him.
00:06:30 --> 00:06:32 The owner of the house went outside and said to them,
00:06:33 --> 00:06:35 No, my friends, don't be so foul.
00:06:36 --> 00:06:37 Since this man is my guest,
00:06:38 --> 00:06:39 don't do these outrageous things.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:43 Look here, it's my virgin daughter and his concubine.
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 I will bring them out to you now,
00:06:46 --> 00:06:47 and you can use them,
00:06:47 --> 00:06:49 and do to them whatever you wish.
00:06:50 --> 00:06:51 But as for this man,
00:06:51 --> 00:06:53 don't do such outrageous things.
00:06:53 --> 00:06:56 But the man would not listen to him.
00:06:56 --> 00:06:59 So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them.
00:07:00 --> 00:07:03 They raped her and abused her throughout the night.
00:07:04 --> 00:07:06 And at dawn, they let her go.
00:07:07 --> 00:07:09 At daybreak, the woman went back to the house
00:07:09 --> 00:07:11 where her master was staying,
00:07:11 --> 00:07:12 fell down at the door,
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 and lay there until day and night.
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 When her master got up in the morning
00:07:17 --> 00:07:19 and opened the door of the house
00:07:19 --> 00:07:23 and stepped out to continue on his way,
00:07:24 --> 00:07:25 there lay his concubine,
00:07:26 --> 00:07:28 fallen in the doorway of the house
00:07:28 --> 00:07:30 with her hands on a threshold.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 He said to her,
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 Get up, let's go.
00:07:33 --> 00:07:35 But there was no answer.
00:07:35 --> 00:07:37 Then the man put her on his donkey
00:07:37 --> 00:07:39 and set out for home.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 When he reached home,
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 he took a knife
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 and cut up his concubine,
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 limb by limb,
00:07:46 --> 00:07:48 into twelve paths
00:07:48 --> 00:07:51 and sent them into the area of Israel.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 Everyone who saw it
00:07:53 --> 00:07:55 was saying to one another,
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 Such a thing
00:07:56 --> 00:07:59 has never been seen or done,
00:07:59 --> 00:08:01 not since the day
00:08:01 --> 00:08:03 the Israelites come out of Egypt.
00:08:03 --> 00:08:04 Just imagine.
00:08:05 --> 00:08:07 We must do something.
00:08:08 --> 00:08:10 So, speak up.
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 Thanks, John.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:17 It's not a fun part of the Bible, is it?
00:08:18 --> 00:08:20 The graphic nature of that passage
00:08:20 --> 00:08:23 is why we decided to have
00:08:23 --> 00:08:25 our kids' church go for one more week.
00:08:25 --> 00:08:27 Not the kind of stuff
00:08:27 --> 00:08:29 we want our kids to be hearing,
00:08:29 --> 00:08:29 but it's in the Bible.
00:08:31 --> 00:08:33 And so we're here at the start of Judges 19.
00:08:33 --> 00:08:35 We're introduced to a couple of characters.
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 Let me read from verses 1 and 2.
00:08:39 --> 00:08:42 In those days, Israel had no king.
00:08:43 --> 00:08:44 Now, a Levite who lived
00:08:44 --> 00:08:45 in a remote area
00:08:45 --> 00:08:47 in the hill country of Ephraim
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 took a concubine
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 from Bethlehem in Judah.
00:08:49 --> 00:08:52 But, she was unfaithful to him.
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 She left him
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 and went back to her parents' home
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 in Bethlehem, Judah.
00:08:56 --> 00:08:56 Okay, so,
00:08:56 --> 00:08:58 we begin with the reminder
00:08:58 --> 00:09:01 that we've had all through this book
00:09:01 --> 00:09:03 that Israel had no king.
00:09:04 --> 00:09:06 And we're introduced to two characters
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 right off the bat.
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 A Levite
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 and his concubine.
00:09:10 --> 00:09:11 Now, this Levite,
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 he's from Ephraim.
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 And the Levites
00:09:13 --> 00:09:17 were specially selected people from God.
00:09:17 --> 00:09:19 They were to be the best of the best.
00:09:19 --> 00:09:21 They were to be the holiest people.
00:09:22 --> 00:09:22 They were the tribe
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 that had no land.
00:09:24 --> 00:09:26 And they would serve at the tabernacle
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 and then the temple.
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 They would serve God.
00:09:28 --> 00:09:30 They would offer sacrifices to God.
00:09:31 --> 00:09:32 So, this Levite
00:09:32 --> 00:09:34 was supposed to be especially holy.
00:09:35 --> 00:09:37 Set apart from the rest of God's people
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 to serve God.
00:09:38 --> 00:09:40 The whole nation was
00:09:40 --> 00:09:42 God's special possessions.
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 But the Levites,
00:09:44 --> 00:09:47 they were to be the best of the best.
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 To be the holiest.
00:09:48 --> 00:09:49 To show the way.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 To show the people
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 how to serve God.
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 To keep people
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 in a right relationship with God
00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 with the sacrifices.
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 And we learn
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 that this Levite
00:10:00 --> 00:10:02 took a concubine
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 from Bethlehem.
00:10:03 --> 00:10:05 Now, a concubine
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 was considered
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 a second class wife.
00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 She was a wife
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 who was also a slave.
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 And so,
00:10:13 --> 00:10:15 this kind of second class wife
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 is a sex object.
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 It's why
00:10:18 --> 00:10:20 he has her
00:10:20 --> 00:10:22 not as a wife
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 but as an object.
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 So, the Levite
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 is both
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 her husband
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 but also
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 her master.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 God has made it clear
00:10:31 --> 00:10:31 to us
00:10:31 --> 00:10:33 and to Israel
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 from Genesis 2
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 that marriage
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 is to be between
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 a man and a woman.
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 But many people
00:10:39 --> 00:10:39 at this time
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 were following their culture.
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 And so,
00:10:42 --> 00:10:42 even though
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 it was technically legal
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 for people
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 to have a concubine,
00:10:46 --> 00:10:46 polygamy
00:10:46 --> 00:10:48 and this kind
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 of second class wife,
00:10:50 --> 00:10:50 this is
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 not God's plan.
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 And in the history
00:10:53 --> 00:10:55 of Israel,
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 it's always brought
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 heartache to people.
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 We see this
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 with people
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 like Abraham
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 and Jacob
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 and King Solomon
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 and King David.
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 It does not go well
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 for people.
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 These first two verses
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 are a deeply
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 concerning opening.
00:11:10 --> 00:11:12 This man was a Levite.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 He was supposed
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 to be set apart.
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 He was supposed
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 to be one of God's
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 key people,
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 one of the best
00:11:18 --> 00:11:18 of the best
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 but he has been
00:11:19 --> 00:11:21 swept up in his culture,
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 pagan culture,
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 taking a concubine.
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 This Levite,
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 it appears
00:11:27 --> 00:11:29 at the outset
00:11:29 --> 00:11:29 is focused
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 upon himself.
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 And the relationship
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 between the Levite
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 and the concubine
00:11:34 --> 00:11:36 is not a good one.
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 From the opening
00:11:37 --> 00:11:37 we learn
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 that she was
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 unfaithful to him.
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 She fled back
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 to her parents' home
00:11:42 --> 00:11:44 and even though
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 some horrible things
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 are going to happen
00:11:46 --> 00:11:46 to her,
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 she is not painted
00:11:48 --> 00:11:50 as innocent.
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 She is painted
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 as sinful too.
00:11:53 --> 00:11:53 She's not innocent.
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 She left her marriage
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 and she left
00:11:56 --> 00:11:58 her master.
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 Both of those things
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 were unlawful to do.
00:12:02 --> 00:12:02 And so,
00:12:03 --> 00:12:03 the concubine,
00:12:04 --> 00:12:05 she had been living
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 with her dad,
00:12:07 --> 00:12:07 her family,
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 back at home
00:12:08 --> 00:12:08 for four months
00:12:08 --> 00:12:10 and the Levite
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 went to persuade her
00:12:11 --> 00:12:11 to return.
00:12:12 --> 00:12:12 Now,
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 I'm going to be away
00:12:13 --> 00:12:13 from my wife
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 for four days
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 this week
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 and I'm going to be
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 longing
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 to see her again
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 on Saturday.
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 This Levite
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 has been away
00:12:21 --> 00:12:21 from his wife
00:12:21 --> 00:12:22 for four months.
00:12:22 --> 00:12:25 I wonder
00:12:25 --> 00:12:27 why he finally
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 decides to go
00:12:28 --> 00:12:28 and get her back.
00:12:30 --> 00:12:30 Maybe he wasn't
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 bothered to go
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 and get her back.
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 Maybe he just
00:12:34 --> 00:12:34 eventually wanted
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 his property back.
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 Maybe it was
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 the status symbol
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 of having a concubine.
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 Maybe it was
00:12:40 --> 00:12:42 something coarse
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 like he just
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 wanted sex back.
00:12:46 --> 00:12:46 And so,
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 when he gets there,
00:12:48 --> 00:12:48 he is met
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 by the concubine's
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 father.
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 Verse four.
00:12:51 --> 00:12:53 His father-in-law,
00:12:53 --> 00:12:54 the woman's father,
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 prevailed on him
00:12:56 --> 00:12:56 to stay.
00:12:57 --> 00:12:57 So he remained
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 with him three days,
00:12:58 --> 00:12:59 eating and drinking
00:12:59 --> 00:13:00 and sleeping there.
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 On the fourth day,
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 they got up early
00:13:02 --> 00:13:02 and he prepared
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 to leave.
00:13:03 --> 00:13:04 But the woman's father
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 said to his son-in-law,

00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 with something to eat,
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 then you can go.
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 So the concubine's father
00:13:10 --> 00:13:11 welcomes him
00:13:11 --> 00:13:11 with open arms,
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 come,
00:13:12 --> 00:13:12 let's eat,
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 let's drink,
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 stay,
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 stay for another night.
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 No,
00:13:16 --> 00:13:16 another night,
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 let's eat and drink some more,
00:13:17 --> 00:13:17 sit down,
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 relax.
00:13:19 --> 00:13:21 And he keeps him there.
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 For four days,
00:13:23 --> 00:13:23 with food,
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 with drink,
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 with good hospitality.
00:13:25 --> 00:13:28 And it seems strange.
00:13:29 --> 00:13:32 Why is this father
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 so hospitable?
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 It doesn't seem
00:13:35 --> 00:13:35 that the Levite
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 is treating his daughter
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 that well.
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 Why is the father
00:13:39 --> 00:13:39 so hospitable?
00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 I wouldn't be like this
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 if it was my daughter.
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 It seems strange
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 as we read it.
00:13:44 --> 00:13:46 So why is he so generous?
00:13:46 --> 00:13:47 What is his motive?
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 What is his plan?
00:13:50 --> 00:13:50 Well,
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 the penalty
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 for adultery
00:13:52 --> 00:13:54 and the penalty
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 for leaving a master,
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 they were both severe.
00:13:58 --> 00:13:58 It was death
00:13:58 --> 00:14:00 and disgrace

00:18:18 --> 00:18:21 to the unimaginable horror
00:18:21 --> 00:18:22 of the woman's
00:18:22 --> 00:18:23 night of torture.
00:18:24 --> 00:18:25 She was used,
00:18:26 --> 00:18:27 she was abused
00:18:27 --> 00:18:29 and she was tossed aside.
00:18:30 --> 00:18:31 And then her body
00:18:31 --> 00:18:33 was carried with disdain
00:18:33 --> 00:18:34 on the back of a donkey,
00:18:34 --> 00:18:35 cut up
00:18:35 --> 00:18:37 and sent around
00:18:37 --> 00:18:37 the country
00:18:37 --> 00:18:38 in a sick
00:18:38 --> 00:18:40 and twisted way
00:18:40 --> 00:18:41 of making people angry
00:18:41 --> 00:18:42 at the tribe
00:18:42 --> 00:18:43 of Benjamin.
00:18:43 --> 00:18:47 How does this passage

00:19:10 --> 00:19:12 and not our God.
00:19:12 --> 00:19:13 That's what the book
00:19:13 --> 00:19:13 of Judges
00:19:13 --> 00:19:14 has been about.
00:19:15 --> 00:19:16 Worshipping idols
00:19:16 --> 00:19:17 and not God
00:19:17 --> 00:19:18 and the consequences.
00:19:19 --> 00:19:20 The Levite
00:19:20 --> 00:19:21 had made an idol
00:19:21 --> 00:19:21 out of sex.
00:19:22 --> 00:19:23 He'd conformed
00:19:23 --> 00:19:24 to the culture
00:19:24 --> 00:19:25 around him,
00:19:25 --> 00:19:26 not taking a wife
00:19:26 --> 00:19:28 but having the status
00:19:28 --> 00:19:28 symbol
00:19:28 --> 00:19:29 of a concubine,
00:19:30 --> 00:19:30 a sex object.
00:19:30 --> 00:19:33 The men of Benjamin,
00:19:33 --> 00:19:33 well,
00:19:33 --> 00:19:34 they see sex
00:19:34 --> 00:19:35 as more important
00:19:35 --> 00:19:36 than obeying God.
00:19:36 --> 00:19:37 The host,
00:19:37 --> 00:19:38 he prefers to honour
00:19:38 --> 00:19:39 his guest
00:19:39 --> 00:19:41 and offer his own daughter
00:19:41 --> 00:19:42 for rape.
00:19:43 --> 00:19:45 The concubine's father,
00:19:45 --> 00:19:45 well,
00:19:45 --> 00:19:46 he worshipped
00:19:46 --> 00:19:48 his own honour
00:19:48 --> 00:19:49 and his own money
00:19:49 --> 00:19:51 afraid of what would happen
00:19:51 --> 00:19:52 if the Levite
00:19:52 --> 00:19:53 took him to court.
00:19:53 --> 00:19:56 This is truly horrible.
00:19:57 --> 00:19:59 It is domestic violence
00:19:59 --> 00:20:00 in the extreme.
00:20:00 --> 00:20:02 This kind of behaviour
00:20:02 --> 00:20:03 still happens today.
00:20:04 --> 00:20:05 We're going to talk about
00:20:05 --> 00:20:06 what domestic violence
00:20:06 --> 00:20:07 looks like
00:20:07 --> 00:20:07 in our response

00:20:07 --> 00:20:08 a little bit later.

00:20:25 --> 00:20:26 laid bare.
00:20:28 --> 00:20:28 Judges has been
00:20:28 --> 00:20:29 about idolatry
00:20:29 --> 00:20:30 of the people
00:20:30 --> 00:20:31 and here the idols
00:20:31 --> 00:20:32 are not other gods
00:20:32 --> 00:20:33 but it is sex,
00:20:33 --> 00:20:35 it is worshipping
00:20:35 --> 00:20:35 the culture,
00:20:35 --> 00:20:37 it is their own honour,
00:20:37 --> 00:20:38 it is money.
00:20:40 --> 00:20:41 Because conflict
00:20:41 --> 00:20:41 reveals
00:20:41 --> 00:20:44 what our idols are.
00:20:45 --> 00:20:46 They reveal
00:20:46 --> 00:20:47 the things we protect
00:20:47 --> 00:20:48 when everything else
00:20:48 --> 00:20:49 is on the line.
00:20:49 --> 00:20:50 We'd prefer to
00:20:50 --> 00:20:52 protect our identities
00:20:52 --> 00:20:54 than confront our sin.
00:20:54 --> 00:20:55 We'd rather see
00:20:55 --> 00:20:56 other people get hurt
00:20:56 --> 00:20:57 than have our own
00:20:57 --> 00:20:59 frailty and sin
00:20:59 --> 00:20:59 exposed.
00:21:01 --> 00:21:02 Pursuing an idol
00:21:02 --> 00:21:03 can justify
00:21:03 --> 00:21:04 all kinds
00:21:04 --> 00:21:06 of depraved acts.
00:21:08 --> 00:21:09 This passage
00:21:09 --> 00:21:10 might make us
00:21:10 --> 00:21:11 grieve,
00:21:11 --> 00:21:12 it might make us
00:21:12 --> 00:21:13 angry,
00:21:14 --> 00:21:15 it might make us
00:21:15 --> 00:21:15 feel sad
00:21:15 --> 00:21:16 but it should
00:21:16 --> 00:21:18 send us
00:21:18 --> 00:21:19 on our knees
00:21:19 --> 00:21:21 before Jesus.
00:21:22 --> 00:21:24 Knowing the depths
00:21:24 --> 00:21:25 of humanity's sin,
00:21:25 --> 00:21:26 knowing the depths
00:21:26 --> 00:21:27 of our sin
00:21:27 --> 00:21:29 and the sin
00:21:29 --> 00:21:30 of the world

00:21:40 --> 00:21:40 our world

00:21:41 --> 00:21:42 and knowing
00:21:42 --> 00:21:43 what we are like
00:21:43 --> 00:21:44 should make us
00:21:44 --> 00:21:44 realise how
00:21:44 --> 00:21:46 big and amazing
00:21:46 --> 00:21:48 God's grace
00:21:48 --> 00:21:48 to us
00:21:48 --> 00:21:49 is.
00:21:50 --> 00:21:51 That God
00:21:51 --> 00:21:51 can even
00:21:51 --> 00:21:52 love people
00:21:52 --> 00:21:53 who would do
00:21:53 --> 00:21:54 a horrendous
