00:00:13 --> 00:00:18 We met with the brothers and sisters at Mosaic Church in Little Rock, Arkansas, yesterday
00:00:18 --> 00:00:20 to look at what they do as a multi-ethnic church.
00:00:21 --> 00:00:24 So we send you our love from the United States, and we're praying for you
00:00:24 --> 00:00:27 that you're having a great morning of fellowship as you gather
00:00:27 --> 00:00:29 and discovering joy in the Lord.
00:00:30 --> 00:00:34 That may not also be the case because there was an article in the Sydney Morning Herald
00:00:34 --> 00:00:37 a couple of years ago that was just titled, Cheer Up Sydney.
00:00:37 --> 00:00:43 The article suggested that we Sydneysiders possess a legendary preference for complaint.
00:00:44 --> 00:00:49 Whether it's property prices, Saturday morning traffic, or the cost of living,
00:00:49 --> 00:00:55 few things appear to escape the gloomy outlook through which we as citizens see the world.
00:00:55 --> 00:01:02 A recent survey concluded that Sydney is not only unhappy with present circumstances,
00:01:03 --> 00:01:05 but quite cynical about the future.
00:01:06 --> 00:01:11 Things like the cost of living and traffic and housing affordability were the most pressing concerns,
00:01:11 --> 00:01:17 and yet nearly one-third suggested it was just a general frustration with the pace and the stress of life
00:01:17 --> 00:01:20 when you've got things like laundry and children to raise.
00:01:21 --> 00:01:26 Ironically, Sydney, however, is ranked as among the ten most liveable cities in the world
00:01:26 --> 00:01:29 by a whole range of different organisations.
00:01:29 --> 00:01:31 There's a lot to love about our city.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:36 There are more jobs and higher wages and good education opportunities and strong support services.
00:01:37 --> 00:01:39 And then there's the cultural bounty.
00:01:40 --> 00:01:45 Maybe not quite as much as Melbourne, but we've got festivals and beaches and parks and sport.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:51 It is, in fact, objectively Australia's number one city.
00:01:52 --> 00:01:56 Psychologist Susie Green, who's the CEO of the Positivity Institute,
00:01:56 --> 00:02:01 says that Sydneysiders have plenty of reasons to cheer up, and she put it really simply.
00:02:01 --> 00:02:05 She says, we live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:07 We're not living in a war-torn country.
00:02:07 --> 00:02:15 So it can be a little confusing that we live in one of the top ten liveable cities in the world,
00:02:15 --> 00:02:19 yet we appear to be pretty much a miserable bunch of people.
00:02:21 --> 00:02:22 What about you?
00:02:22 --> 00:02:26 Is your life characterised by joy?
00:02:27 --> 00:02:30 If circumstances are the issue, that's how we get joy,
00:02:30 --> 00:02:32 then we should be, frankly, happier than most,
00:02:32 --> 00:02:34 and yet the reality is we're not.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:40 And I'm pretty sure this morning that no matter where you are on the joy scale,
00:02:40 --> 00:02:44 none of us would complain about getting a little bit more joy in our life.
00:02:45 --> 00:02:50 I'm pretty sure all of us would be keen to increase in some level of joy.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:53 So we'll see in John 16 today
00:02:53 --> 00:03:00 that encountering the resurrected Jesus guarantees joy.
00:03:00 --> 00:03:05 In chapters 14, 16, and 17 of John,
00:03:06 --> 00:03:12 Jesus is repeatedly telling his disciples that he has a joy to give them.
00:03:13 --> 00:03:17 Now, this is just before his execution, and he knows it's coming.
00:03:18 --> 00:03:23 And this is when his disciples are distraught with the news that Jesus is leaving them.
00:03:23 --> 00:03:29 So this is a profound joy in the midst of dark circumstances.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:34 So this morning, there are three things that I want us to see from John 16.
00:03:35 --> 00:03:39 Firstly, the promise and reality of joy.
00:03:39 --> 00:03:42 Secondly, the nature of joy.
00:03:42 --> 00:03:47 And thirdly, how is it possible that we might be growing in joy?
00:03:47 --> 00:03:50 So firstly, the promise and reality of joy.
00:03:50 --> 00:03:54 And I've got these outlines in your St. Paul's app, if you can open that up now.
00:03:56 --> 00:04:00 Jesus Christ says that if you meet me and come to know me,
00:04:01 --> 00:04:05 you'll have a joy that is deep and powerful and is now.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:11 He says that joy is inevitable when you meet him.
00:04:11 --> 00:04:17 Notice in the text, in verses 16 to 19, we have this phrase,
00:04:18 --> 00:04:19 in a little while.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:21 It's repeated a number of times.
00:04:22 --> 00:04:26 And it's all to do with what Jesus says in verse 16.
00:04:27 --> 00:04:30 In a little while, you will see me no more.
00:04:31 --> 00:04:35 And then after a little while, you will see me again.
00:04:37 --> 00:04:40 Now, there's a few different layers of meaning here.
00:04:41 --> 00:04:45 But essentially, Jesus is talking to his disciples about his death,
00:04:46 --> 00:04:49 his burial in a tomb, and resurrection on the third day.
00:04:50 --> 00:04:54 He's saying, I'm going to die, and you're going to be distraught.
00:04:55 --> 00:04:59 But when you see me again as the resurrected Lord,
00:05:00 --> 00:05:02 you will rejoice.
00:05:04 --> 00:05:04 All of them.
00:05:05 --> 00:05:08 Not just the more emotional ones of them,
00:05:08 --> 00:05:11 or the ones with the better lives.
00:05:11 --> 00:05:14 But all of them will rejoice.
00:05:16 --> 00:05:18 Let me just emphasize something here.
00:05:18 --> 00:05:20 Just bear with me for a little bit.
00:05:21 --> 00:05:25 Jesus isn't saying that you rejoice at my second coming,
00:05:25 --> 00:05:27 although they will.
00:05:27 --> 00:05:30 He isn't saying when you die and you go to heaven,
00:05:30 --> 00:05:31 you will then rejoice,
00:05:32 --> 00:05:33 although they will.
00:05:33 --> 00:05:37 Jesus is saying when you see me resurrected,
00:05:38 --> 00:05:39 you will rejoice.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:44 This is not just a promise for the first disciples.
00:05:44 --> 00:05:47 This is for us now, today.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:50 This is so essential.
00:05:51 --> 00:05:53 Just indulge me just a little bit more.
00:05:53 --> 00:05:56 You may not be aware of this,
00:05:56 --> 00:05:58 but to this day,
00:05:58 --> 00:06:00 no one knows the location of the tomb
00:06:00 --> 00:06:04 where Jesus was laid for three days after his crucifixion.
00:06:05 --> 00:06:06 No one.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:07 There's a few guesses.
00:06:07 --> 00:06:10 By 120 AD,
00:06:11 --> 00:06:14 Christians were not even sure where it was anymore.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:15 Why is that?
00:06:17 --> 00:06:20 Why is it when the tombs of every religious founder and prophet
00:06:20 --> 00:06:24 have been venerated and turned into a shrine,
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 that is,
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 they are places of pilgrimage to this day,
00:06:27 --> 00:06:30 why is it that we don't know Jesus?
00:06:31 --> 00:06:34 When Osama bin Laden was finally found and killed,
00:06:34 --> 00:06:36 he was immediately buried at sea
00:06:36 --> 00:06:38 because the United States government
00:06:38 --> 00:06:40 didn't want his burial location
00:06:40 --> 00:06:42 turned into a shrine,
00:06:42 --> 00:06:44 a pilgrimage place
00:06:44 --> 00:06:46 for radical Islamists.
00:06:47 --> 00:06:51 So how come the Christians forgot about the tomb of Jesus?
00:06:53 --> 00:06:54 The reason is,
00:06:54 --> 00:06:56 when you have Jesus,
00:06:56 --> 00:06:58 you don't need his tomb.
00:06:59 --> 00:07:00 In the same way that
00:07:00 --> 00:07:02 when I have my daughters,
00:07:02 --> 00:07:03 their rooms,
00:07:03 --> 00:07:04 their things,
00:07:05 --> 00:07:06 their artwork,
00:07:06 --> 00:07:07 and it's just,
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 it's not as important.
00:07:10 --> 00:07:12 If I've got my daughters,
00:07:12 --> 00:07:14 their shoes and their clothing and their toys
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 and their exercise books
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 are just not as important.
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 If, however,
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 one of my daughters goes away
00:07:20 --> 00:07:23 or leaves for a very long time
00:07:23 --> 00:07:24 or dies,
00:07:24 --> 00:07:26 then all of a sudden
00:07:26 --> 00:07:28 their scribblings become important.
00:07:29 --> 00:07:29 The photos,
00:07:30 --> 00:07:31 the exercise books,
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 the letters,
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 their favourite toys,
00:07:33 --> 00:07:34 all of a sudden
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 they take on
00:07:35 --> 00:07:37 a great more meaning
00:07:37 --> 00:07:39 because it's all I've got left.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 The reason the tomb
00:07:41 --> 00:07:43 didn't matter to the early Christians
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 is because they had Jesus.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 Real Christianity
00:07:46 --> 00:07:48 is to meet
00:07:48 --> 00:07:49 the risen,
00:07:49 --> 00:07:51 reigning Lord Jesus.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:52 Friends,
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 we don't need a relic
00:07:53 --> 00:07:55 because we have him.
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 There is an alive
00:07:57 --> 00:07:59 and active relationship
00:07:59 --> 00:08:00 with Jesus now
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 available to everyone.
00:08:02 --> 00:08:02 See,
00:08:03 --> 00:08:04 Christianity doesn't just promise
00:08:04 --> 00:08:05 incredible joy at the end,
00:08:05 --> 00:08:07 pie in the sky if you like.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:09 It promises it now.
00:08:09 --> 00:08:11 When you meet the risen Lord,
00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 you rejoice.
00:08:12 --> 00:08:15 This is as true for us now
00:08:15 --> 00:08:17 as it was for the first disciples.
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 In fact,
00:08:20 --> 00:08:21 the illustration of the woman
00:08:21 --> 00:08:22 giving birth
00:08:22 --> 00:08:23 in the middle of the text
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 declares it too.
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 Jesus says,
00:08:26 --> 00:08:27 Joy is like a woman in labour.
00:08:28 --> 00:08:30 When the time has come,
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 she has the child.
00:08:33 --> 00:08:33 Now,
00:08:33 --> 00:08:35 I've watched a woman
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 give birth
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 on three separate occasions.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 It's Natalie,
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 just in case I need
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 to clarify that.
00:08:42 --> 00:08:42 Now,
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 one thing I do know
00:08:43 --> 00:08:44 about childbirth
00:08:44 --> 00:08:46 is that when it's time,
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 it's time.
00:08:48 --> 00:08:50 There's no stopping it.
00:08:51 --> 00:08:51 Now,
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 and I'm pretty sure
00:08:52 --> 00:08:54 that I would have suffered
00:08:54 --> 00:08:56 physical violence
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 if I had said,
00:08:57 --> 00:08:59 can you just hold on,
00:08:59 --> 00:08:59 honey,
00:08:59 --> 00:09:00 until tomorrow?
00:09:01 --> 00:09:01 You know,
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 like I'm looking
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 for an early night tonight.
00:09:03 --> 00:09:03 Just,
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 you know,
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 put it off until tomorrow.
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 The reality,
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 you can't even hold it
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 for five minutes.
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 I remember running to cars
00:09:10 --> 00:09:12 and running through hospitals.
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 When it's time,
00:09:14 --> 00:09:14 it's time.
00:09:15 --> 00:09:17 And what Jesus is saying here
00:09:17 --> 00:09:20 is that if you meet him,
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 you will have joy.
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 It's inevitable.
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 It's got to be there.
00:09:27 --> 00:09:29 We are not Christians
00:09:29 --> 00:09:31 without this joy.
00:09:33 --> 00:09:33 I wonder
00:09:33 --> 00:09:35 whether,
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 if you've ever noticed
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 how much the Bible,
00:09:37 --> 00:09:37 in fact,
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 speaks of joy.
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 Here's a,
00:09:40 --> 00:09:40 here's a sample.
00:09:41 --> 00:09:41 I won't give you
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 all the references,
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 but here's just a sample.
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 Rejoice in the Lord always.
00:09:46 --> 00:09:46 And again,
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 I say,
00:09:48 --> 00:09:48 rejoice.
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 The statues of the Lord
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 are right,
00:09:51 --> 00:09:53 rejoicing the heart.
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 Serve the Lord
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 with gladness.
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 You shall go out with joy
00:09:58 --> 00:10:00 and be led forth with peace.
00:10:00 --> 00:10:03 The Lord will rejoice
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 in doing you good.
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 Rejoice,
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 for your names
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 are written in heaven.
00:10:09 --> 00:10:11 I bring news
00:10:11 --> 00:10:13 of great joy.
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 These things I speak,
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 that your joy
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 might be full.
00:10:18 --> 00:10:18 The disciples
00:10:18 --> 00:10:20 were filled with joy
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 and the Spirit.
00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 Rejoice in hope.
00:10:25 --> 00:10:25 We rejoice
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 in our sufferings.
00:10:26 --> 00:10:28 The joy of the Lord
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 is your strength.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 The fruit of the Spirit
00:10:31 --> 00:10:33 is joy.
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 What is the essence
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 of Christianity?
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 What does it mean
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 to be part
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 of God's kingdom?
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 Paul tells us
00:10:44 --> 00:10:46 in Romans 14,
00:10:46 --> 00:10:46 verse 17,
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 what the mark
00:10:48 --> 00:10:48 of being
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 in the kingdom
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 of God are.
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 It's,
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 strangely,
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 not what you eat,
00:10:54 --> 00:10:56 it's not how you dress,
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 not rules you keep.
00:10:58 --> 00:10:58 He says,
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 the kingdom of God
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 is not a matter
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 of eating
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 and drinking,
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 but of righteousness,

00:11:07 --> 00:11:09 in the Holy Spirit.
00:11:10 --> 00:11:12 So Jesus says
00:11:12 --> 00:11:12 to his disciples
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 in verse 20,
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 you will grieve,
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 but your grief
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 will turn to joy.
00:11:19 --> 00:11:21 Joy is the inevitable
00:11:21 --> 00:11:23 when we meet
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 the resurrected Jesus
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 who is alive
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 and reigning
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 now.
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 Jesus promises
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 joy.
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 It's real.
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 If joy,
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 therefore,
00:11:36 --> 00:11:36 is inevitable
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 for the Christian,
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 how can it be
00:11:38 --> 00:11:40 that so many Christians
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 are just morose?
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 Remember in Luke 1
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 when the pregnant Mary
00:11:44 --> 00:11:46 and the pregnant Elizabeth
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 come together
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 and at the sound
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 of Mary's voice,
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 the baby John
00:11:51 --> 00:11:51 the Baptist
00:11:51 --> 00:11:53 in Elizabeth's womb,
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 it says,
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 jumped for joy.
00:11:57 --> 00:11:57 Just at the sound
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 of her voice.
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 Psalm 96
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 says that when
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 Jesus Christ
00:12:01 --> 00:12:03 comes back,
00:12:03 --> 00:12:05 the trees of the forest
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 will sing for joy.
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 So if the trees
00:12:08 --> 00:12:10 and the babies
00:12:10 --> 00:12:10 in the womb
00:12:10 --> 00:12:12 and anything else
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 that gets near Jesus
00:12:13 --> 00:12:15 leap and sing
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 for joy,
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 then why aren't we?
00:12:18 --> 00:12:20 joy is like a tree.
00:12:21 --> 00:12:21 The Bible
00:12:21 --> 00:12:22 isn't commanding us
00:12:22 --> 00:12:24 to have a feeling here.
00:12:24 --> 00:12:26 It isn't calling us
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 to force our feelings.
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 The Bible's not saying
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 two plus two
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 equals five.
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 The Bible is,
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 however,
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 searching us.
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 Is there something
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 that we are doing
00:12:36 --> 00:12:38 that's stopping joy
00:12:38 --> 00:12:38 in our life?
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 There are certainly
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 times of grief.
00:12:43 --> 00:12:45 But joy is like a tree.
00:12:45 --> 00:12:47 It's not always green.
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 It's not always flourishing.
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 Joy can grow
00:12:50 --> 00:12:52 in the drought
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 in the same way
00:12:53 --> 00:12:54 a tree can grow
00:12:54 --> 00:12:55 in the drought.
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 But is there something
00:12:58 --> 00:12:59 that is stopping you
00:12:59 --> 00:13:00 from seeing
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 what you have
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 in Jesus?
00:13:04 --> 00:13:04 Is there a
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 comparatively
00:13:05 --> 00:13:07 small thing
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 causing you
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 to be upset
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 and stopping you
00:13:10 --> 00:13:11 to see
00:13:11 --> 00:13:11 what you have
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 in Jesus?
00:13:12 --> 00:13:14 is something
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 else
00:13:15 --> 00:13:15 more important
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 than Jesus
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 to you?
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 This leads me
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 to the second point.
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 What is the nature
00:13:21 --> 00:13:23 of Christian joy?
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 Have a look
00:13:25 --> 00:13:25 at what Jesus
00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 says about Christian
00:13:26 --> 00:13:27 joy in verse 21
00:13:27 --> 00:13:29 of John 16.
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 A woman
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 giving birth
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 to a child
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 has pain
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 because her time
00:13:35 --> 00:13:35 has come.
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 But when her baby
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 is born,
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 she forgets
00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 the anguish
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 because of her joy
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 that a child
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 is born
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 into the world.
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 It doesn't say
00:13:48 --> 00:13:50 that the anguish
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 is gone.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 When the child
00:13:53 --> 00:13:55 is born,
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 the pain
00:13:56 --> 00:13:56 isn't gone.
00:13:57 --> 00:13:58 It hasn't just
00:13:58 --> 00:13:59 all of a sudden
00:13:59 --> 00:13:59 stopped.
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 It hasn't just
00:14:00 --> 00:14:00 disappeared.
00:14:01 --> 00:14:02 It says here
00:14:02 --> 00:14:02 she remembers
00:14:02 --> 00:14:03 the pain
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 no more.
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 It's similar.
00:14:06 --> 00:14:07 In Isaiah
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 43 verse
00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 25,
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 God says,
00:14:12 --> 00:14:12 I,
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 even I,
00:14:13 --> 00:14:13 am he who
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 blots out
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 your transgressions
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 and for my
