00:00:02 --> 00:00:04 My name's Steve, if I've not met you before.
00:00:05 --> 00:00:09 And if this is the first time you've been here at St. Paul's,
00:00:09 --> 00:00:11 so you've just joined in, tuned in at the moment.
00:00:11 --> 00:00:14 We have been, over the course of a couple of months,
00:00:14 --> 00:00:19 working our way through the second half of John's biography
00:00:19 --> 00:00:20 on the life of Jesus.
00:00:21 --> 00:00:23 And we did the first half early this year.
00:00:24 --> 00:00:26 What we've been really the undercurrent all the way through
00:00:26 --> 00:00:30 is really just showing out here again and again
00:00:30 --> 00:00:32 from the text of John's Gospel,
00:00:33 --> 00:00:39 how the Christian faith is relevant, it's reasonable, and it's good,
00:00:39 --> 00:00:43 and that ultimately it leads to abundant life.
00:00:43 --> 00:00:44 That's the undercurrent.
00:00:44 --> 00:00:48 Today's passage is really getting to the crux of it all.
00:00:49 --> 00:00:53 It's like Jesus' whole life and ministry is coming to this point,
00:00:53 --> 00:01:01 and this is what, this crucifixion of Jesus, as we've just read,
00:01:01 --> 00:01:06 is what Christianity offers a world that is losing hope
00:01:06 --> 00:01:08 in its ability to fix itself.
00:01:09 --> 00:01:10 That's what we're looking at today.
00:01:11 --> 00:01:13 It's what Christianity offers you,
00:01:14 --> 00:01:17 who are struggling to change,
00:01:18 --> 00:01:21 for you who are looking for peace,
00:01:21 --> 00:01:23 who cannot find security,
00:01:24 --> 00:01:26 for you who are looking for hope.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:30 And it's crucial, this message,
00:01:30 --> 00:01:32 because over two centuries now,
00:01:32 --> 00:01:37 Western societies like us here in Australia
00:01:37 --> 00:01:42 have put our hope in the progressiveness of history.
00:01:43 --> 00:01:48 We've held this strong belief for over two centuries
00:01:48 --> 00:01:54 that every generation will experience a better world
00:01:54 --> 00:01:56 than the one before it.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:01 We've held out this hope that it's just a matter of time,
00:02:01 --> 00:02:04 just a matter of time,
00:02:04 --> 00:02:08 and we'll be able to solve our greatest ills.
00:02:09 --> 00:02:11 We've assumed that human reason,
00:02:12 --> 00:02:13 ingenuity,
00:02:13 --> 00:02:14 science,
00:02:15 --> 00:02:19 once it's freed from superstitious beliefs,
00:02:19 --> 00:02:22 and especially anything to do with religious belief,
00:02:23 --> 00:02:26 we will have a much better world,
00:02:27 --> 00:02:28 a much better world,
00:02:29 --> 00:02:29 a better future.
00:02:31 --> 00:02:32 And the reality is,
00:02:32 --> 00:02:34 over the last couple of centuries,
00:02:35 --> 00:02:38 there's a number of good things that have come our way.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:41 But the reality is,
00:02:41 --> 00:02:45 that the first four decades of the 20th century,
00:02:45 --> 00:02:46 last century,
00:02:46 --> 00:02:49 should have been enough
00:02:49 --> 00:02:52 to wipe out the illusion of the progressiveness of history.
00:02:53 --> 00:02:56 In the space of four decades,
00:02:56 --> 00:02:59 our world faced two world wars,
00:02:59 --> 00:03:00 a pandemic,
00:03:00 --> 00:03:01 and a Great Depression.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:03 What followed that was the Cold War,
00:03:04 --> 00:03:05 and the threat of nuclear holocaust.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:05 Holocaust.
00:03:07 --> 00:03:12 It seems the greatest threat to our hope for a better world,
00:03:12 --> 00:03:13 in the end,
00:03:14 --> 00:03:16 is not the natural environment,
00:03:17 --> 00:03:20 but the various forms of evil that spring from the human heart.
00:03:22 --> 00:03:24 You see, science can come up with a vaccine.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:25 We're thankful for that.
00:03:26 --> 00:03:28 And we've got a bunch of technology.
00:03:28 --> 00:03:30 And 16's coming out.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:32 That's sure to make life better for everyone.
00:03:32 --> 00:03:34 There's a heap of stuff.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:37 That's sarcasm, in case you didn't pick that up.
00:03:39 --> 00:03:40 But what it can't do,
00:03:41 --> 00:03:43 it can't eradicate human evil.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:44 It still exists.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:52 The ordinary cruelties of self-interest in business,
00:03:53 --> 00:03:53 racism,
00:03:54 --> 00:03:54 arrogance,
00:03:55 --> 00:03:55 pride,
00:03:56 --> 00:03:57 dishonesty,
00:03:57 --> 00:03:57 corruption,
00:03:58 --> 00:03:58 abuse,
00:03:58 --> 00:03:59 sexism,
00:03:59 --> 00:03:59 bullying,
00:03:59 --> 00:04:00 bullying,
00:04:01 --> 00:04:04 the countless acts of selfishness
00:04:04 --> 00:04:06 that we witness,
00:04:06 --> 00:04:07 and, dare I say,
00:04:08 --> 00:04:09 we even practice day by day ourselves.
00:04:11 --> 00:04:14 And so John 19 offers us our deepest hope.
00:04:16 --> 00:04:19 The word that the Bible uses for hope
00:04:19 --> 00:04:23 is a word that means profound certainty.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:29 Christianity offers a profound certainty
00:04:29 --> 00:04:31 about our future,
00:04:32 --> 00:04:33 and even about our presence,
00:04:33 --> 00:04:36 even during evil and suffering,
00:04:38 --> 00:04:40 a profound certainty that God is guiding
00:04:40 --> 00:04:44 every twist and turn
00:04:44 --> 00:04:48 in our life towards the resurrection
00:04:48 --> 00:04:51 of our bodies and our souls
00:04:51 --> 00:04:52 to a new,
00:04:52 --> 00:04:52 perfect,
00:04:53 --> 00:04:53 and eternal world
00:04:53 --> 00:04:55 where there is no more pain,
00:04:56 --> 00:04:57 no more death,
00:04:57 --> 00:04:58 no more tears.
00:04:58 --> 00:04:58 In fact,
00:04:59 --> 00:05:00 Christianity
00:05:00 --> 00:05:02 is the only worldview
00:05:02 --> 00:05:04 that has ever existed
00:05:04 --> 00:05:05 in society,
00:05:05 --> 00:05:06 anywhere in the world
00:05:06 --> 00:05:07 in history,
00:05:07 --> 00:05:08 that offers
00:05:08 --> 00:05:11 a perfect new world
00:05:11 --> 00:05:12 with new bodies
00:05:12 --> 00:05:14 as our ultimate hope.
00:05:15 --> 00:05:16 It's the only one.
00:05:16 --> 00:05:18 all founded on the resurrection
00:05:18 --> 00:05:20 of one person.
00:05:21 --> 00:05:22 But that's next week.
00:05:24 --> 00:05:26 It's really all founded here
00:05:26 --> 00:05:29 in these explosive three days of history
00:05:29 --> 00:05:31 that are the death and resurrection
00:05:31 --> 00:05:32 of Jesus and Nazareth
00:05:32 --> 00:05:34 2 years ago in Israel.
00:05:35 --> 00:05:36 And today I want to focus on
00:05:36 --> 00:05:38 just two things on this passage
00:05:38 --> 00:05:39 just read out to you.
00:05:39 --> 00:05:40 Open your Bibles,
00:05:40 --> 00:05:41 John 19.
00:05:42 --> 00:05:43 Two things
00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 that Jesus said on the cross
00:05:45 --> 00:05:49 those two things reveal
00:05:49 --> 00:05:50 firstly of all
00:05:50 --> 00:05:51 the nature
00:05:51 --> 00:05:53 of the hope
00:05:53 --> 00:05:56 that Jesus offers us
00:05:56 --> 00:05:57 and secondly
00:05:57 --> 00:06:00 how do we take up,
00:06:00 --> 00:06:01 how do we accept
00:06:01 --> 00:06:03 this offer of hope?
00:06:03 --> 00:06:04 That's in these two points
00:06:04 --> 00:06:06 and if you've got the St. Paul's app
00:06:06 --> 00:06:07 you can follow along in there
00:06:07 --> 00:06:08 if you like
00:06:08 --> 00:06:09 and take some notes.
00:06:09 --> 00:06:10 So first of all
00:06:10 --> 00:06:10 the nature
00:06:10 --> 00:06:12 of his offer of hope.
00:06:12 --> 00:06:16 At the end of the crucifixion account
00:06:16 --> 00:06:17 in John 19
00:06:17 --> 00:06:20 we read this in verse 28.
00:06:21 --> 00:06:21 Later
00:06:21 --> 00:06:22 knowing that everything
00:06:22 --> 00:06:24 had now been finished
00:06:24 --> 00:06:26 and so that scripture
00:06:26 --> 00:06:27 would be fulfilled
00:06:27 --> 00:06:28 Jesus said
00:06:28 --> 00:06:32 I am thirsty.
00:06:32 --> 00:06:35 Now our first reaction
00:06:35 --> 00:06:37 to hearing Jesus say that
00:06:37 --> 00:06:38 is you go
00:06:38 --> 00:06:40 well of course he's thirsty
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 you know like he's
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 he's out there
00:06:42 --> 00:06:43 exposed
00:06:43 --> 00:06:44 you know
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 crucified
00:06:45 --> 00:06:46 under the
00:06:46 --> 00:06:48 hot Middle Eastern sun
00:06:48 --> 00:06:50 losing bodily fluids
00:06:50 --> 00:06:50 he's got no
00:06:50 --> 00:06:52 sun protection
00:06:52 --> 00:06:53 and of course he's thirsty.
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 But I think
00:06:56 --> 00:06:57 we need to dwell on it
00:06:57 --> 00:06:58 just a little bit more
00:06:58 --> 00:06:58 than that.
00:06:58 --> 00:07:01 because think about it
00:07:01 --> 00:07:04 up to this point
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 Jesus has suffered
00:07:05 --> 00:07:06 an awful lot.
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 He's been beaten
00:07:09 --> 00:07:10 in the face
00:07:10 --> 00:07:10 with fists
00:07:10 --> 00:07:13 he's been lashed
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 with a whip
00:07:14 --> 00:07:16 in such a way
00:07:16 --> 00:07:18 that his back
00:07:18 --> 00:07:18 would have been
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 looked like a chunk
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 of raw meat
00:07:20 --> 00:07:23 his ribs
00:07:23 --> 00:07:23 would have been
00:07:23 --> 00:07:25 exposed from behind
00:07:25 --> 00:07:27 he's had
00:07:27 --> 00:07:28 tent pegs
00:07:28 --> 00:07:28 driven
00:07:28 --> 00:07:30 through
00:07:30 --> 00:07:32 his wrists
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 and his feet
00:07:33 --> 00:07:35 a crown
00:07:35 --> 00:07:35 of thorns
00:07:35 --> 00:07:37 squeezed
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 over his head
00:07:38 --> 00:07:40 he's endured
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 all of that
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 and he's not
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 said a single
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 word
00:07:44 --> 00:07:46 nothing
00:07:46 --> 00:07:48 not even
00:07:48 --> 00:07:49 an oof
00:07:49 --> 00:07:49 ow
00:07:49 --> 00:07:51 that hurt
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 nothing
00:07:52 --> 00:07:55 he accepted
00:07:55 --> 00:07:55 it
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 and he has
00:07:56 --> 00:07:56 submitted to it
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 so why now
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 does he say
00:07:58 --> 00:08:00 actually I'm thirsty
00:08:00 --> 00:08:04 something deeper
00:08:04 --> 00:08:05 is happening here
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 than mere physical
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 thirst
00:08:07 --> 00:08:09 and so what you need
00:08:09 --> 00:08:09 to do is you need
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 to read the
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 I am thirsty
00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 in the context
00:08:12 --> 00:08:12 of everything
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 that John's
00:08:13 --> 00:08:13 already written
00:08:13 --> 00:08:15 in his gospel
00:08:15 --> 00:08:16 earlier John
00:08:16 --> 00:08:18 records Jesus
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 encountering a
00:08:19 --> 00:08:20 woman at a
00:08:20 --> 00:08:20 well
00:08:20 --> 00:08:22 she's a Samaritan
00:08:22 --> 00:08:23 woman a first
00:08:23 --> 00:08:23 century
00:08:23 --> 00:08:25 mortal enemy
00:08:25 --> 00:08:25 of the Jewish
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 people
00:08:26 --> 00:08:27 and she is
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 surprised that
00:08:28 --> 00:08:29 Jesus who's a Jew
00:08:29 --> 00:08:31 asks her for a drink
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 and then Jesus
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 says to her
00:08:33 --> 00:08:35 in John 4 verse 13
00:08:35 --> 00:08:37 everyone who drinks
00:08:37 --> 00:08:37 this water
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 will be thirsty
00:08:38 --> 00:08:38 again
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 talking about the
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 water that's in
00:08:40 --> 00:08:40 the well
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 but whoever
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 drinks the water
00:08:42 --> 00:08:44 that I give them
00:08:44 --> 00:08:46 will never thirst
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 indeed the water
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 that I give them
00:08:48 --> 00:08:50 will become
00:08:50 --> 00:08:50 in them
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 a spring
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 of water
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 welling up
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 to eternal
00:08:54 --> 00:08:54 life
00:08:54 --> 00:08:56 so Jesus
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 in this
00:08:57 --> 00:08:57 encounter
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 is talking
00:08:58 --> 00:08:59 about something
00:08:59 --> 00:09:00 much more
00:09:00 --> 00:09:00 significant
00:09:00 --> 00:09:02 than drinking
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 water
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 out of a
00:09:04 --> 00:09:04 water bottle
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 out of a
00:09:05 --> 00:09:05 well
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 you see
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 in the
00:09:07 --> 00:09:07 Bible
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 thirst
00:09:08 --> 00:09:10 is a
00:09:10 --> 00:09:10 metaphor
00:09:10 --> 00:09:12 for the
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 spiritual
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 emptiness
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 that comes
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 when God
00:09:16 --> 00:09:16 is not the
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 centre of
00:09:17 --> 00:09:17 our life

00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 actual
00:10:40 --> 00:10:40 drink
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 that we
00:10:41 --> 00:10:43 are consistently
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 pouring
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 into our
00:10:45 --> 00:10:45 lives
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 in order
00:10:46 --> 00:10:48 to satisfy
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 a soul
00:10:49 --> 00:10:49 quench
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 that we
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 constantly
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 feel inside
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 the emptiness
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 the void
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 that we
00:10:55 --> 00:10:55 feel inside
00:10:55 --> 00:11:00 the point
00:11:00 --> 00:11:00 Jesus
00:11:00 --> 00:11:00 is getting
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 to is
00:11:01 --> 00:11:01 this
00:11:01 --> 00:11:03 if we
00:11:03 --> 00:11:03 attempt
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 to quench
00:11:04 --> 00:11:04 the thirst
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 of our
00:11:05 --> 00:11:05 soul
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 with anything
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 other
00:11:07 --> 00:11:07 than the
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 love
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 and the
00:11:09 --> 00:11:09 beauty
00:11:09 --> 00:11:11 and the
00:11:11 --> 00:11:11 comfort
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 of God
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 in Jesus
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 then we
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 will thirst
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 again
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 and again
00:11:17 --> 00:11:19 and again
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 and again
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 and again
00:11:21 --> 00:11:23 until we
00:11:23 --> 00:11:23 thirst
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 forever
00:11:24 --> 00:11:28 only God
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 in Jesus
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 can fully
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 and completely
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 satisfy
00:11:32 --> 00:11:35 that thirst
00:11:35 --> 00:11:35 of emptiness
00:11:35 --> 00:11:38 everything else
00:11:38 --> 00:11:38 is like drinking
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 seawater
00:11:39 --> 00:11:41 momentarily
00:11:41 --> 00:11:41 makes you
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 feel okay
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 until you
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 just thirst
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 again
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 and again
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 until it
00:11:47 --> 00:11:47 kills you
00:11:47 --> 00:11:50 so what
00:11:50 --> 00:11:50 Jesus does
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 here is he
