00:00:36 --> 00:00:39 And would you want to see if seeing meant believing,
00:00:40 --> 00:00:44 it meant that you would have to believe in things like heaven and Jesus?

00:00:48 --> 00:00:49 Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:01:08 --> 00:01:18 I remember being 10 years old on a bus, on the bus to school and hearing that song and
00:01:18 --> 00:01:21 sitting there for the whole bus ride just thinking about that question.
00:01:22 --> 00:01:24 What if God was one of us?
00:01:24 --> 00:01:29 As a kid, though, I missed all the sarcasm and the bitterness in the song.
00:01:31 --> 00:01:33 Because it's the song of a secular person.
00:01:34 --> 00:01:37 It's a song of someone who believes that God doesn't exist.
00:01:38 --> 00:01:42 And even if he does, it wouldn't matter even if he did show up.
00:01:42 --> 00:01:46 But what if God was one of us?
00:01:49 --> 00:01:55 Today we're going to hear from a man like one of us called Jesus, who claimed to be God.
00:01:56 --> 00:01:58 The wildest claim anyone could make.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:02 But if it's true, it really does matter.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:06 Is Jesus really God?
00:02:06 --> 00:02:14 If you went down into Chatswood and asked people that crazy question, what would people say?
00:02:15 --> 00:02:19 They might say, God doesn't exist, so Jesus is a fraud.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:21 Is Jesus really God?
00:02:23 --> 00:02:28 Or God does exist, but he doesn't care or can't or won't do anything.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:32 He's lazy or voiceless or vindictive.
00:02:33 --> 00:02:35 Jesus, no, he doesn't matter.
00:02:35 --> 00:02:39 Or maybe Jesus is God or some other deity.
00:02:40 --> 00:02:41 Maybe they're all the same.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:44 Or I'm a good person.
00:02:45 --> 00:02:46 I live a good life.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:49 So I don't need Jesus, even if he is God.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:51 How would you answer?
00:02:55 --> 00:02:57 I want you to imagine you're on a plane.
00:02:58 --> 00:03:00 But the plane is crashing.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:01 I'm sorry.
00:03:03 --> 00:03:04 The plane is crashing.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:08 What do you worry about in that moment?
00:03:10 --> 00:03:13 Would you be devastated that your life is about to end?
00:03:14 --> 00:03:16 Or angry at a God who doesn't care?
00:03:17 --> 00:03:20 Or be counting up your sins and checking your moral status?
00:03:21 --> 00:03:26 Would you have any assurance of what meeting with God will be like after you die?
00:03:26 --> 00:03:32 The truth is, we are all on a plane like that.
00:03:32 --> 00:03:38 A plane that is our lifetime with no landing gear.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:47 No matter what point in the flight you are, every life hits a mountain called death.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:53 We need someone to give us life beyond the crash before we crash.
00:03:53 --> 00:04:02 And we'll see today that there is only hope for life if Jesus really is God.
00:04:02 --> 00:04:05 So get John chapter 5 in front of you.
00:04:05 --> 00:04:12 The beginning of this chapter, we heard this last week from John Lauer.
00:04:12 --> 00:04:17 And Jesus went to work on the Sabbath day.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:19 When it was illegal to work.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:26 He went and found a man who could not walk and did the work of healing him.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:29 And then in verse 16 of chapter 5 it says,
00:04:30 --> 00:04:33 The religious leaders began to persecute him for doing this.
00:04:34 --> 00:04:35 Why?
00:04:35 --> 00:04:39 Because Jesus deliberately broke the law as they knew it.
00:04:40 --> 00:04:43 It was said that only God could work on the Sabbath.
00:04:44 --> 00:04:48 For God is always working and his work is effortless.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:53 God only needs to speak and creation obeys.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:56 But Jesus says in verse 17,
00:04:57 --> 00:05:00 My father is always at his work to this very day.
00:05:00 --> 00:05:03 And I too am working.
00:05:04 --> 00:05:08 See, Jesus was claiming to be working legally.
00:05:09 --> 00:05:11 He was claiming to be God.
00:05:12 --> 00:05:15 And the religious leaders understood exactly what he claimed.
00:05:16 --> 00:05:19 No longer were they going to just persecute him as a nuisance.
00:05:20 --> 00:05:23 But from that point, as soon as Jesus said that,
00:05:23 --> 00:05:24 they sought to kill him.
00:05:25 --> 00:05:27 Not only was he breaking the Sabbath,
00:05:27 --> 00:05:29 but he was even calling God his own father,
00:05:29 --> 00:05:31 making himself equal with God.
00:05:33 --> 00:05:34 And the rest of the chapter
00:05:34 --> 00:05:41 is Jesus' answer to their charges and judgment of him.
00:05:42 --> 00:05:45 That he was not God and deserved punishment.
00:05:47 --> 00:05:48 Deserved death.
00:05:48 --> 00:05:53 So Jesus stated his case before them in our passage today,
00:05:53 --> 00:05:55 outlining his claims in more detail,
00:05:56 --> 00:06:00 and how he planned to prove that those claims are true.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:05 Jesus claimed to be God.
00:06:07 --> 00:06:10 He said that he was doing God's works,
00:06:10 --> 00:06:14 like a son following in his father's trade.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:18 Imagine a son and a father in a workshop.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:20 Maybe they're working on some wood.
00:06:20 --> 00:06:21 I'm not very handy.
00:06:22 --> 00:06:24 But I'm imagining this is the kind of language
00:06:24 --> 00:06:27 and picture Jesus is trying to paint
00:06:27 --> 00:06:28 when he says in verse 20,
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 for the father loves the son
00:06:31 --> 00:06:34 and shows him all he does.
00:06:34 --> 00:06:41 Jesus even said he's worthy of worship like the father.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 Verse 23.
00:06:43 --> 00:06:45 Whoever does not honor the son
00:06:45 --> 00:06:48 does not honor the father who sent him.
00:06:50 --> 00:06:56 But the two-edged swords of his claim to be God is this,
00:06:57 --> 00:06:58 that he is the judge of all
00:06:58 --> 00:07:01 and he is the giver of life.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:05 Let's read from verse 28.
00:07:07 --> 00:07:10 A time is coming when all who are in their graves
00:07:10 --> 00:07:12 will hear his voice and come out.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:15 Those who have done what is good will rise to live
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 and those who have done what is evil
00:07:16 --> 00:07:18 will rise to be condemned.
00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 Jesus' accusers were not shocked
00:07:21 --> 00:07:26 that he said every person will be raised to judgment,
00:07:27 --> 00:07:30 either to death and condemnation
00:07:30 --> 00:07:35 or death and to eternal life.
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 But they were shocked
00:07:37 --> 00:07:41 because Jesus said he is the voice.
00:07:42 --> 00:07:44 He is the voice that would rise the dead
00:07:44 --> 00:07:46 into judgment.
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 Verse 22.
00:07:48 --> 00:07:51 The father has entrusted all judgment to the son.
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 Verse 27.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:56 And he has given him authority to judge.
00:07:56 --> 00:08:03 Jesus literally claimed he will judge all people
00:08:03 --> 00:08:04 for the life that they live.
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 Their eternal destiny,
00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 my eternal destiny,
00:08:09 --> 00:08:11 will be determined by Jesus.
00:08:12 --> 00:08:12 Man.
00:08:13 --> 00:08:17 Speaking in Palestine 2 years ago.
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 Verse 25.
00:08:19 --> 00:08:22 Very truly I tell you,
00:08:22 --> 00:08:24 a time is coming
00:08:24 --> 00:08:27 when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God
00:08:27 --> 00:08:29 and those who hear will live.
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 Were you reading along with your Bible?
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 You've got to hold me accountable here

00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 a time is coming
00:08:41 --> 00:08:44 and is now here.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:47 The determining of eternal destiny
00:08:47 --> 00:08:52 started the moment we heard Jesus' voice.
00:08:53 --> 00:08:55 The judge of the world has arrived.
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 He came with a voice
00:08:56 --> 00:08:58 that would condemn
00:08:58 --> 00:09:00 or bring life.
00:09:01 --> 00:09:03 And Jesus also claimed
00:09:03 --> 00:09:05 to be the giver of life.
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 At the beginning of chapter 5,
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 he goes to work
00:09:10 --> 00:09:12 and does a healing.
00:09:13 --> 00:09:15 He heals completely dead legs.
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 And then in verse 12,
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 he came to be able
00:09:20 --> 00:09:23 to raise the completely dead
00:09:23 --> 00:09:26 just as the Father raises the dead
00:09:26 --> 00:09:28 and gives them life.
00:09:29 --> 00:09:31 Even so, the Son gives life.
00:09:32 --> 00:09:34 It's not just physical death, though,
00:09:34 --> 00:09:36 that he claimed to have power over.
00:09:36 --> 00:09:38 It's spiritual deadness, too.
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 In verse 24,
00:09:40 --> 00:09:43 whoever hears my word
00:09:43 --> 00:09:46 and believes him who sent me
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 has eternal life
00:09:47 --> 00:09:49 and will not be judged,
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 but is crossed over
00:09:50 --> 00:09:52 from death to life.
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 This judge claimed
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 to be able
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 to grant
00:09:57 --> 00:10:00 life
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 on one condition.
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 salvation.
00:10:02 --> 00:10:04 And it's backwards
00:10:04 --> 00:10:04 to what people
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 in our city
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 might expect.
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 It's backwards
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 to what the people
00:10:08 --> 00:10:08 hearing Jesus
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 expected.
00:10:09 --> 00:10:11 Because it's not merit.
00:10:11 --> 00:10:13 It's not good works.
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 It's not our own goodness.
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 Jesus said
00:10:16 --> 00:10:18 just by believing
00:10:18 --> 00:10:20 he would grant
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 eternal life.
00:10:22 --> 00:10:22 This believing
00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 is hearing Jesus
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 claim to be God
00:10:25 --> 00:10:27 and agreeing
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 that God,
00:10:28 --> 00:10:28 the Father,
00:10:29 --> 00:10:29 sent him.
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 Look again
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 at verse 24.
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 Look at this promise.
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 Jesus said
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 that by believing
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 in him
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 we have
00:10:41 --> 00:10:43 eternal life.
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 We have
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 crossed over
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 from death
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 to life
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 at the moment
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 of believing.
00:10:49 --> 00:10:51 how could
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 Jesus
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 promise people
00:10:53 --> 00:10:53 this?
00:10:55 --> 00:10:55 There's a clue
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 in the next verse.
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 Verse 25.
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 A time is coming
00:10:59 --> 00:11:01 and has now come
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 when the dead
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 will hear
00:11:03 --> 00:11:03 the voice
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 of the Son of God
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 and those who hear
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 will live.
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 Jesus is the start
00:11:08 --> 00:11:10 of eternal life.
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 It's his initiative.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:12 It's his life
00:11:12 --> 00:11:14 and it's his promise.
00:11:15 --> 00:11:15 Believing in him
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 now
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 begins
00:11:17 --> 00:11:19 an eternal life.
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 with him.
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 We will all
00:11:23 --> 00:11:23 one day
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 be physically dead
00:11:24 --> 00:11:26 and without
00:11:26 --> 00:11:28 an eternal life
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 beyond death
00:11:29 --> 00:11:31 where spiritually
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 is good as dead.
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 Yet anyone,
00:11:35 --> 00:11:35 Jesus says,
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 can receive
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 eternal life
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 now
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 by believing
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 in him
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 and cross
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 from death
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 to immediate
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 abundant
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 eternal
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 life.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 Life that begins
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 in eternity
00:11:49 --> 00:11:49 with him
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 as your God.
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 Free from
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 condemnation,
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 free from fear,
00:11:54 --> 00:11:54 free from
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 hopelessness
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 by simply
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 believing
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 that Jesus
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 really is
00:11:59 --> 00:11:59 God.

00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 shatter
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 the expectations
00:12:07 --> 00:12:07 of our city.

00:12:11 --> 00:12:11 ago,
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 a man

00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 you.
00:13:28 --> 00:13:28 He lines
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 up witnesses
00:13:29 --> 00:13:29 to his
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 claims.
00:13:30 --> 00:13:30 For he
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 says it's
00:13:31 --> 00:13:31 not enough
00:13:31 --> 00:13:31 for me
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 just to
00:13:32 --> 00:13:32 say,
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 in verse
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 31,
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 that I
00:13:36 --> 00:13:36 am God.
00:13:37 --> 00:13:37 It's not
00:13:37 --> 00:13:37 enough for
00:13:37 --> 00:13:37 me to
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 witness to
00:13:38 --> 00:13:38 myself.
00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 According
00:13:40 --> 00:13:40 to Jesus,
00:13:41 --> 00:13:41 John the
00:13:41 --> 00:13:41 Baptist,
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 the greatest
00:13:43 --> 00:13:43 man of
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 all time
00:13:44 --> 00:13:44 as Jesus
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 described him
00:13:45 --> 00:13:46 in Matthew
00:13:46 --> 00:13:46 11,
00:13:48 --> 00:13:48 John the
00:13:48 --> 00:13:48 Baptist
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 declared
00:13:49 --> 00:13:49 Jesus as
00:13:49 --> 00:13:50 the Lamb
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 of God.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 And God
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 the Father
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 declared
00:13:55 --> 00:13:55 audibly from
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 heaven,
00:13:57 --> 00:13:57 this is
00:13:57 --> 00:13:58 my Son,
00:13:58 --> 00:13:59 listen to
00:13:59 --> 00:13:59 him.
00:14:00 --> 00:14:00 But Jesus
00:14:00 --> 00:14:01 says in
00:14:01 --> 00:14:02 this passage
00:14:02 --> 00:14:04 that his
00:14:04 --> 00:14:05 accusers don't
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 recognize the
00:14:06 --> 00:14:06 Father.
00:14:07 --> 00:14:07 They've never
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 seen him,
00:14:08 --> 00:14:08 they don't
00:14:08 --> 00:14:08 know his
00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 voice.
00:14:09 --> 00:14:10 So what he
00:14:10 --> 00:14:10 says of
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 Jesus goes
00:14:11 --> 00:14:11 unheard.
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 John 5,
00:14:14 --> 00:14:14 37,
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 he says,
00:14:15 --> 00:14:15 you've never
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 heard his
00:14:16 --> 00:14:16 voice.
00:14:16 --> 00:14:19 And
00:14:19 --> 00:14:19 agreeing with
00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 the Father
00:14:20 --> 00:14:20 is scripture
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 itself.
00:14:22 --> 00:14:22 That whole
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 Old Testament
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 that's come
00:14:24 --> 00:14:24 before.
00:14:26 --> 00:14:26 Jesus
00:14:26 --> 00:14:27 summarizes it
00:14:27 --> 00:14:29 as Moses,
