00:00:16 --> 00:00:21 One of the things, I'm not sure what you have planned so far in your New Year's resolutions
00:00:21 --> 00:00:26 and what you're hoping for 2026, but one of the things that we can all look forward to
00:00:26 --> 00:00:35 in 2026 is that it is a census year, and so expect that at some point this year to have
00:00:35 --> 00:00:41 people knocking on your door and having copious amounts of questions about your life to fill out.
00:00:42 --> 00:00:51 The last national census we had, happens every five years, 2021, revealed that 45% of our
00:00:51 --> 00:01:02 neighbourhood here in Chatswood have no religious belief at all. In fact, it is more than 10% higher
00:01:02 --> 00:01:12 than the average in New South Wales and across Australia, so we are a highly non-religious area
00:01:12 --> 00:01:19 where we are. We also rate rated much lower than the state and the national average.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:24 For those who are claiming, those who do have religious belief, those who are claiming to have
00:01:24 --> 00:01:30 a Christian faith. So not only are we not religious, we are very low when it comes to
00:01:30 --> 00:01:39 the idea of those who would identify as Christian. And so as we kick off a brand new year in 2026,
00:01:39 --> 00:01:48 the question I'm asking is, is it reasonable to be a Christian? Not just in this area, but is it reasonable
00:01:48 --> 00:01:56 to be Christian at all? And so over the next four weeks, we're going to be unpacking that question.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:04 And really, the answer to it, we're going to keep landing on is very much a resounding yes.
00:02:05 --> 00:02:14 As time goes on, more and more are resounding yes. We'll be exploring why faith in Jesus Christ
00:02:14 --> 00:02:26 is reasonable, why it's plausible, why it is good, why it is desirable, in fact. And so if you are,
00:02:26 --> 00:02:37 for instance, maybe an agnostic, tuning in over the next few weeks, I want to ask whether you are 100%
00:02:37 --> 00:02:49 certain that you want to stay uncertain about God. If you are a sceptic tuning in, I maybe want you to
00:02:49 --> 00:03:02 consider what kind of God it is whose existence that you would deem implausible. What kind of God
00:03:02 --> 00:03:09 would that be? And if you are a Christian tuning in, my hope is in the next few weeks,
00:03:09 --> 00:03:19 you become more confident in terms of hope in Jesus, but also that you would be more confident
00:03:19 --> 00:03:26 that it is good and plausible and right and desirable to continue to grow deeper in Jesus
00:03:26 --> 00:03:33 in 2026 and you'd have a plan to do so. And so this morning, what I'm really wanting to do is just
00:03:33 --> 00:03:41 to briefly consider whether it's reasonable to be a person of faith in an increasingly secular era and
00:03:41 --> 00:03:48 neighbourhood, and whether it is reasonable to have faith in God and particularly to have faith in Jesus.
00:03:48 --> 00:04:01 That's our journey this morning. So is faith reasonable? Now, history is full of famous and brilliant people
00:04:01 --> 00:04:11 looking at evidence for God's existence and moving in two totally different directions. At the one end,
00:04:11 --> 00:04:17 for instance, you might have the British mathematician and philosopher Bertrand Russell.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:30 He was asked very late in life, you know, if he, what he would say if he discovered there was in fact a God
00:04:30 --> 00:04:39 after he died. What would you say in that moment? And his reply was, God, you didn't give us enough evidence.
00:04:40 --> 00:04:46 That would be his reply. On the other hand, you've got other people on the other end of the spectrum,
00:04:46 --> 00:04:53 again, likewise, brilliant people, famous people, Elizabeth Anscombe, who may not be famous to you all,
00:04:53 --> 00:04:59 but in actual fact, one of the most famous philosophers in the English language, Elizabeth
00:04:59 --> 00:05:10 Anselm, she actually looked at the evidence for God and moved from atheism towards and to Christianity.
00:05:10 --> 00:05:17 So looking at the same evidence and at the same time as Bertrand Russell and moved in two different directions.
00:05:18 --> 00:05:25 And the list on both sides is long and distinguished. So how do we account for that? How do you account
00:05:25 --> 00:05:29 that you've got same people looking at the same or different people look at the same evidence and going
00:05:29 --> 00:05:37 in two different directions? Now, the more common argument used today in our culture to solve that
00:05:37 --> 00:05:48 problem is that religious people, they ground their life in a thing called faith, but secular people
00:05:48 --> 00:05:59 ground their life in logic and reason and science. Hence, the title of this series is Let's Be Reasonable.
00:05:59 --> 00:06:09 Religious people have faith and something deep inside of them that they need fulfilling and they
00:06:09 --> 00:06:17 therefore have a bias towards religion and an emotional need to believe in something beyond
00:06:17 --> 00:06:25 themselves. Secular people are just, well, they're just not, they're just unbiased. They don't have that
00:06:25 --> 00:06:35 bias, they're objective and they look at life entirely rationally. That's how it's generally argued in our
00:06:35 --> 00:06:44 society nowadays. And frankly, it's just simply not true. In his book, A Secular Age, Charles Taylor,
00:06:45 --> 00:06:53 what he calls this view, the subtraction story. This is where a person might say, well, you know,
00:06:53 --> 00:06:59 I used to believe in God and the supernatural, but because of science, because of reason,
00:07:00 --> 00:07:09 I just subtracted God. And now I just see things the way they actually are. You know, I'm just unbiased.
00:07:10 --> 00:07:15 It's a common view that, you know, you'll see an atheist will debate with a Christian.
00:07:16 --> 00:07:21 You believe in one God, what about everyone else who believes in multiple gods? You've deleted all
00:07:21 --> 00:07:26 those other gods and I've just gone one extra step and deleted your God as well. That's all I've done.
00:07:26 --> 00:07:30 The same principle. That's how an atheist will argue with the subtraction of story.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:44 The reality is though, to move from belief in God to non-belief is a shift from one set of beliefs
00:07:44 --> 00:07:51 beliefs to an entirely new set of beliefs. It is not a move from belief to non-belief.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:56 It is a move from one set of beliefs to an entirely new set of beliefs.
00:07:58 --> 00:08:05 One of the very first sets of beliefs a secular person adopts, an atheist will adopt,
00:08:05 --> 00:08:16 is called exclusive rationalism. And it's the belief that science is the only arbiter of what is real
00:08:16 --> 00:08:25 and factual and that nothing should be believed that unless it can be decisively proven with evidence
00:08:25 --> 00:08:36 and observation. Now, that sounds reasonable. It's, of course, it's actually irrational, but it sounds reasonable.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:49 For instance, just take that statement on the board. What is, for instance, the observable proof?
00:08:49 --> 00:08:57 What is the factual evidence that that statement is true?
00:09:01 --> 00:09:06 That is, the very claim of exclusive rationality can't even meet its own criteria.
00:09:09 --> 00:09:13 That statement can't be proven factually at all.
00:09:13 --> 00:09:20 Even reason and proof must start with faith in reason and proof.
00:09:22 --> 00:09:31 In some kind of concept, exclusive rationality depends on the belief that human senses,
00:09:32 --> 00:09:37 our eyes, our ears, our minds, our memories, are not tricking us in any way.
00:09:38 --> 00:09:40 It has to start with that assumption.
00:09:40 --> 00:10:03 Observation and scientific evidence can neither prove that there is a God nor disprove that there is a God.
00:10:03 --> 00:10:05 They can't do either of those things.
00:10:05 --> 00:10:12 And so all varieties of secularism are set to beliefs,
00:10:13 --> 00:10:19 not just simply the absence of a belief or the absence of faith.
00:10:20 --> 00:10:22 And therefore, it needs to be proven.
00:10:24 --> 00:10:32 I saw an interview between the comedian Ricky Gervais and US comedian, talk show host Stephen Colbert.
00:10:32 --> 00:10:39 Gervais is an agnostic atheist.
00:10:39 --> 00:10:41 Colbert is a confused Catholic.
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 So they go well together.
00:10:44 --> 00:10:51 And Gervais was explaining how his entire worldview relied completely on science.
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 That was it.
00:10:53 --> 00:10:58 Completely on science, evidence, fact, logic to explain all things.
00:10:58 --> 00:11:02 He made it clear that he was not a person of faith.
00:11:02 --> 00:11:04 He had no faith at all whatsoever.
00:11:04 --> 00:11:08 He was just purely a person of logic and fact.
00:11:09 --> 00:11:19 He then made a comment in the course of the interview about how the universe started from this freakish,
00:11:19 --> 00:11:24 minuscule burst of light that happened billions of years ago.
00:11:24 --> 00:11:28 And Colbert, in this moment, was very sharp, very quick.
00:11:28 --> 00:11:32 He jumped in and said, can you actually prove that statement?
00:11:36 --> 00:11:38 Can you actually prove that statement?
00:11:40 --> 00:11:45 He said, aren't you just relying upon what Stephen Hawkins himself was,
00:11:45 --> 00:11:48 declared an opinion?
00:11:48 --> 00:11:56 And at that moment, you can see Gervais was really thrown back a little bit.
00:11:56 --> 00:11:58 And then Colbert jumps in and rescues the thing.
00:11:58 --> 00:12:00 And they had a bit of a laugh and they moved on kind of stuff.
00:12:00 --> 00:12:04 But in other words, what he did was, it was actually a step of faith.
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 It was actually a step of faith.
00:12:08 --> 00:12:14 His entire worldview was began with a step of faith, with a belief in something.
00:12:14 --> 00:12:24 You see, theism nor atheism can be 100% proven by data.
00:12:25 --> 00:12:32 They are systems of thinking and believing that need to be compared to one another
00:12:32 --> 00:12:35 to determine which one makes the most sense,
00:12:36 --> 00:12:42 which makes the most sense of our experience of things we know and need to explain,
00:12:42 --> 00:12:46 which one makes the most sense of our social experience
00:12:46 --> 00:12:52 and addresses the problems we face in living together as human society.
00:12:53 --> 00:13:01 And which of these is most logically consistent internally as a belief system,
00:13:02 --> 00:13:06 without importing ideas from other worldviews and systems?
00:13:06 --> 00:13:09 Which brings me to the second point.
00:13:09 --> 00:13:12 Is faith in God reasonable?
00:13:15 --> 00:13:21 If, therefore, we can establish that all people exercise faith to some degree,
00:13:21 --> 00:13:24 is it reasonable to have faith in a God?
00:13:25 --> 00:13:32 Believers in God have argued that God's existence cannot be proven empirically
00:13:32 --> 00:13:39 empirically as if God were like a physical object that you can put in a science lab and test.
00:13:40 --> 00:13:47 But the existence of God can be logically inferred.
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 Logically inferred.
00:13:50 --> 00:13:58 And, in fact, many scientific theories work on exactly the same principle,
00:13:58 --> 00:14:02 the logical inference that something is true.
00:14:03 --> 00:14:08 Physics is mainly based on logical inference.
00:14:09 --> 00:14:18 And Christianity suggests there are very significant clues that point to the existence of God.
00:14:18 --> 00:14:26 Psalm 19 in the Old Testament tells us that God has put his fingerprints everywhere in the universe.
00:14:26 --> 00:14:28 The heavens declare the glory of God.
00:14:28 --> 00:14:30 The skies proclaim the work of his hands.
00:14:30 --> 00:14:32 Day after day, they pour forth speech.
00:14:33 --> 00:14:35 Night after night, they reveal knowledge.
00:14:35 --> 00:14:36 They have no speech.
00:14:37 --> 00:14:37 They use no words.
00:14:37 --> 00:14:39 No sound is heard from them.
00:14:39 --> 00:14:45 And yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.
00:14:47 --> 00:14:52 So what I'm going to do is I'm going to mention just two clues.
00:14:52 --> 00:14:58 There is at least more than 30 big systems of clues.
00:14:58 --> 00:14:59 They're big systems of clues.
00:14:59 --> 00:15:01 I'm going to just mention two very briefly.
00:15:03 --> 00:15:04 There is the cosmic wonder clue.
00:15:06 --> 00:15:12 Modern science is completely insufficient to explain the existence of the world.
00:15:13 --> 00:15:16 Because there are two unavoidable questions.
00:15:16 --> 00:15:20 Two unavoidable questions that need to be asked.
00:15:20 --> 00:15:29 First of all, how did the indescribably variety of life in this universe come to be?
00:15:30 --> 00:15:36 You know, there's more than 900 species of just insects.
00:15:37 --> 00:15:40 How did all of that variety come to be?
00:15:40 --> 00:15:53 How did we go from a single-celled life in prehistoric soup to mosquitoes and giraffes
00:15:53 --> 00:15:57 and the billions of other things in between?
00:15:57 --> 00:16:07 Now, there's an infinity of articles or books or conferences or TV programs or PhD theses.
00:16:07 --> 00:16:10 Studies have been devoted to that topic.
00:16:11 --> 00:16:13 And it's a widely discussed topic.
00:16:14 --> 00:16:17 And the general view is a thing called evolution.
00:16:18 --> 00:16:24 And that is it all happened by accident and it's just kind of evolved from there.
00:16:24 --> 00:16:30 It's become, it's no longer a theory, it's become regarded as fact.
00:16:31 --> 00:16:39 But the second unavoidable question, and biologists want to talk about evolution all the time,
00:16:39 --> 00:16:42 but the second unavoidable question is this one.
00:16:43 --> 00:16:49 What happened to bring life into existence in the very first place?
00:16:49 --> 00:16:50 What happened there?
00:16:51 --> 00:16:57 And that question is very rarely ever asked.
00:16:59 --> 00:17:04 Much less is it answered with any scientific credibility.
00:17:07 --> 00:17:10 How does, and this is the massive question,
00:17:10 --> 00:17:13 the massive question,
00:17:14 --> 00:17:19 how does life come from no life?
00:17:20 --> 00:17:21 How does that happen?
00:17:26 --> 00:17:28 In 1952,
00:17:29 --> 00:17:31 at the University of Chicago,
00:17:31 --> 00:17:34 two scientists tried to replicate
00:17:34 --> 00:17:37 what you might call the Big Bang,
00:17:38 --> 00:17:41 to get life from no life.
00:17:43 --> 00:17:47 It became known as the Miller-Urey experiment.
00:17:47 --> 00:17:48 It's quite a famous experiment.
00:17:48 --> 00:17:49 In 1952.
00:17:52 --> 00:17:54 And they were able to produce
00:17:54 --> 00:18:00 a change
00:18:00 --> 00:18:02 in four elements.
00:18:02 --> 00:18:07 But they weren't able to produce life.
00:18:08 --> 00:18:10 And certainly not able to produce life
00:18:10 --> 00:18:11 that would produce life itself.
00:18:13 --> 00:18:14 In the end,
00:18:14 --> 00:18:16 in 1952,
00:18:17 --> 00:18:18 it was a
00:18:18 --> 00:18:19 failed experiment
00:18:19 --> 00:18:22 to produce life from non-life.
00:18:24 --> 00:18:24 That's
00:18:24 --> 00:18:25 1952.
00:18:27 --> 00:18:28 Think of the
00:18:28 --> 00:18:30 scientific advancements that we've had
00:18:30 --> 00:18:31 since 1952,
00:18:31 --> 00:18:33 in the last seven decades.
00:18:33 --> 00:18:33 I could
00:18:33 --> 00:18:35 rattle off a long list.
00:18:35 --> 00:18:35 Initially,
00:18:36 --> 00:18:37 I did have a long list of everything that's happened
00:18:37 --> 00:18:39 since 1952
00:18:39 --> 00:18:40 in scientific advancement.
00:18:45 --> 00:18:47 And the Miller-Urey experiment
00:18:47 --> 00:18:48 has never been advanced upon
00:18:48 --> 00:18:49 since 1952.
00:18:54 --> 00:18:54 No one,
00:18:55 --> 00:18:56 no scientist,
00:18:56 --> 00:18:58 has been able to go
00:18:58 --> 00:18:59 take life
00:18:59 --> 00:19:01 out of no life.
00:19:02 --> 00:19:04 And this is the question
00:19:04 --> 00:19:05 that science,
00:19:05 --> 00:19:06 frankly,
00:19:06 --> 00:19:07 cannot answer
00:19:07 --> 00:19:09 and their entire
00:19:09 --> 00:19:10 worldview hinges on it.
00:19:12 --> 00:19:13 That an atheist worldview
00:19:13 --> 00:19:14 hinges on this one.
00:19:16 --> 00:19:16 You see,
00:19:17 --> 00:19:19 what Christians have been saying
00:19:19 --> 00:19:20 for centuries
00:19:20 --> 00:19:22 is that the existence
00:19:22 --> 00:19:23 of God
00:19:23 --> 00:19:24 is inferred
00:19:24 --> 00:19:24 from the existence
00:19:24 --> 00:19:25 of life itself.
00:19:29 --> 00:19:31 Life must come
00:19:31 --> 00:19:32 from something
00:19:32 --> 00:19:34 that is already
00:19:34 --> 00:19:34 alive.
00:19:36 --> 00:19:37 It cannot come
00:19:37 --> 00:19:38 from something
00:19:38 --> 00:19:39 that is dead,
00:19:39 --> 00:19:40 that doesn't exist.
00:19:42 --> 00:19:43 In his book,
00:19:43 --> 00:19:44 The Language of God,
00:19:44 --> 00:19:44 scientist
00:19:44 --> 00:19:46 Francis Collins
00:19:46 --> 00:19:47 puts it like this.
00:19:47 --> 00:19:48 we have this
00:19:48 --> 00:19:49 very solid conclusion
00:19:49 --> 00:19:50 that the universe
00:19:50 --> 00:19:51 had an origin,
00:19:51 --> 00:19:52 the Big Bang,
00:19:52 --> 00:19:53 15 billion years ago.
00:19:53 --> 00:19:54 The universe began
00:19:54 --> 00:19:55 with an unimaginable
00:19:55 --> 00:19:57 bright flash of energy
00:19:57 --> 00:19:57 from an infinitely
00:19:57 --> 00:19:59 small point.
00:19:59 --> 00:20:00 That implies
00:20:00 --> 00:20:02 that before that,
00:20:02 --> 00:20:02 there was nothing.
00:20:04 --> 00:20:05 I cannot imagine
00:20:05 --> 00:20:06 how nature,
00:20:06 --> 00:20:07 in this case,
00:20:07 --> 00:20:08 the universe,
00:20:08 --> 00:20:10 could have created itself.
00:20:11 --> 00:20:12 And the very fact
00:20:12 --> 00:20:12 that the universe
00:20:12 --> 00:20:13 had a beginning
00:20:13 --> 00:20:15 implies that someone
00:20:15 --> 00:20:16 was able to begin it.
00:20:17 --> 00:20:19 And it seems to me
00:20:19 --> 00:20:21 that had to be
00:20:21 --> 00:20:22 outside of nature.
00:20:24 --> 00:20:25 And so,
00:20:26 --> 00:20:27 ironically,
00:20:28 --> 00:20:29 for the rickage of aces
00:20:29 --> 00:20:30 and so on of this world,
00:20:31 --> 00:20:32 science itself
00:20:32 --> 00:20:33 has given us
00:20:33 --> 00:20:34 a strong case
00:20:34 --> 00:20:35 that there is something
00:20:35 --> 00:20:37 beyond the natural world
00:20:37 --> 00:20:37 that brought it
00:20:37 --> 00:20:38 into existence.
00:20:40 --> 00:20:42 And which even now
00:20:42 --> 00:20:43 upholds the existence
00:20:43 --> 00:20:44 of this universe.
00:20:44 --> 00:20:44 universe.
00:20:45 --> 00:20:47 That's the first clue,
00:20:48 --> 00:20:49 the cosmic wonder clue.
00:20:49 --> 00:20:50 The second one,
00:20:50 --> 00:20:51 which builds on that one,
00:20:53 --> 00:20:54 the second clue
00:20:54 --> 00:20:54 for God's existence,
00:20:54 --> 00:20:56 is the fine-tuning
00:20:56 --> 00:20:58 design of the world.
00:21:01 --> 00:21:02 At one point,
00:21:02 --> 00:21:04 the most famous atheist
00:21:04 --> 00:21:05 in the world,
00:21:05 --> 00:21:07 a guy named Christopher Hitchens,
00:21:07 --> 00:21:09 admitted that the fine-tuning
00:21:09 --> 00:21:12 of the universe argument
00:21:12 --> 00:21:15 was an argument
00:21:15 --> 00:21:16 that was not trivial.
00:21:17 --> 00:21:18 The most difficult one,
00:21:18 --> 00:21:20 you had to think about it hard,
00:21:20 --> 00:21:22 the most difficult one
00:21:22 --> 00:21:23 to actually get over.
00:21:26 --> 00:21:26 And so,
00:21:26 --> 00:21:27 the fine-tuning argument
00:21:27 --> 00:21:28 is kind of like this.
00:21:29 --> 00:21:30 Think of existence
00:21:30 --> 00:21:31 as a set of dials.
00:21:33 --> 00:21:35 Every one of those dials
00:21:35 --> 00:21:37 must be at exactly
00:21:37 --> 00:21:39 the right point,
00:21:39 --> 00:21:42 precisely at the right point
00:21:42 --> 00:21:43 for life to exist.
00:21:45 --> 00:21:48 Even a slight variation
00:21:48 --> 00:21:51 on any one of those dials,
00:21:51 --> 00:21:52 on any one of them,
00:21:53 --> 00:21:55 would be enough
00:21:55 --> 00:21:56 for life to no longer
00:21:56 --> 00:21:57 be able to exist.
00:21:58 --> 00:22:00 On any one of the dials.
00:22:00 --> 00:22:04 And the irony is,
00:22:04 --> 00:22:05 it's with the advance
00:22:05 --> 00:22:06 of science
00:22:06 --> 00:22:08 that we're discovering
00:22:08 --> 00:22:09 that this clue
00:22:09 --> 00:22:10 is getting stronger
00:22:10 --> 00:22:11 and stronger
00:22:11 --> 00:22:12 and stronger.
00:22:16 --> 00:22:19 The scientist Carl Sagan
00:22:19 --> 00:22:19 once said
00:22:19 --> 00:22:20 that there are only
00:22:20 --> 00:22:21 two parameters
00:22:21 --> 00:22:22 for life to exist.
00:22:22 --> 00:22:22 In other words,
00:22:22 --> 00:22:23 there's only two dials
00:22:23 --> 00:22:24 on the deck.
00:22:26 --> 00:22:26 With the advance
00:22:26 --> 00:22:27 of the decades,
00:22:28 --> 00:22:28 science has discovered
00:22:28 --> 00:22:29 literally
00:22:29 --> 00:22:31 hundreds of parameters,
00:22:32 --> 00:22:33 hundreds of dials
00:22:33 --> 00:22:34 that need to be
00:22:34 --> 00:22:36 fine-tuned perfectly,
00:22:36 --> 00:22:38 not just in this world,
00:22:38 --> 00:22:39 not just in human life,
00:22:40 --> 00:22:42 but also in the universe
00:22:42 --> 00:22:43 for life to exist.
00:22:44 --> 00:22:45 And the possibility
00:22:45 --> 00:22:47 that those dials
00:22:47 --> 00:22:48 came to accidentally
00:22:48 --> 00:22:49 be set
00:22:49 --> 00:22:51 at exactly the right spot,
00:22:51 --> 00:22:53 at exactly the right time
00:22:53 --> 00:22:55 for life to begin,
00:22:55 --> 00:22:56 and
00:22:56 --> 00:22:59 to have stayed
00:22:59 --> 00:23:00 statically
00:23:00 --> 00:23:02 in those spots
00:23:02 --> 00:23:03 for life to continue
00:23:03 --> 00:23:04 to go on existing
00:23:04 --> 00:23:07 is a massive leap
00:23:07 --> 00:23:07 of faith.
00:23:11 --> 00:23:12 And it's also
00:23:12 --> 00:23:13 a rejection
00:23:13 --> 00:23:14 of scientific evidence
00:23:15 --> 00:23:16 that shows
00:23:16 --> 00:23:16 the universe
00:23:16 --> 00:23:17 is not static at all.
00:23:17 --> 00:23:22 You see,

00:35:14 --> 00:35:14 people,
00:35:15 --> 00:35:16 that they
00:35:16 --> 00:35:16 were in
00:35:16 --> 00:35:17 fact divine,
00:35:18 --> 00:35:19 that they
00:35:19 --> 00:35:19 were in
00:35:19 --> 00:35:20 fact God.
00:35:23 --> 00:35:24 So why
00:35:24 --> 00:35:25 did Jesus
00:35:25 --> 00:35:26 succeed?
00:35:27 --> 00:35:28 Succeed as

00:35:29 --> 00:35:29 person who
00:35:29 --> 00:35:30 ever claimed
00:35:30 --> 00:35:32 deity and
00:35:32 --> 00:35:33 founded a
00:35:33 --> 00:35:34 major religion,
00:35:34 --> 00:35:35 in fact the
00:35:35 --> 00:35:36 largest one.
00:35:40 --> 00:35:41 How was
00:35:41 --> 00:35:42 he able to
00:35:42 --> 00:35:42 do that?
00:35:44 --> 00:35:45 Firstly,
00:35:45 --> 00:35:45 because his
00:35:45 --> 00:35:46 life was
00:35:46 --> 00:35:47 exquisitely
00:35:47 --> 00:35:47 beautiful.
00:35:49 --> 00:35:49 It is
00:35:49 --> 00:35:50 extraordinarily
00:35:50 --> 00:35:51 difficult to
00:35:51 --> 00:35:53 claim to
00:35:53 --> 00:35:53 be God,
00:35:54 --> 00:35:54 to claim to
00:35:54 --> 00:35:55 be perfect,
00:35:56 --> 00:35:57 to claim to
00:35:57 --> 00:35:58 be divine,
00:35:59 --> 00:36:00 and then at
00:36:00 --> 00:36:01 the same time
00:36:01 --> 00:36:02 get everyone
00:36:02 --> 00:36:03 you live with
00:36:03 --> 00:36:04 to be convinced
00:36:04 --> 00:36:05 of that truth
00:36:05 --> 00:36:05 as well.
00:36:05 --> 00:36:05 God.
00:36:11 --> 00:36:11 I mean,
00:36:12 --> 00:36:14 his disciples
00:36:14 --> 00:36:15 were with
00:36:15 --> 00:36:15 him for

00:36:19 --> 00:36:19 if we had
00:36:19 --> 00:36:20 12 people who

00:36:23 --> 00:36:24 you wouldn't
00:36:24 --> 00:36:24 get past
00:36:24 --> 00:36:25 lunch on the
00:36:25 --> 00:36:26 first day and
00:36:26 --> 00:36:27 your claims to
00:36:27 --> 00:36:28 divinity would
00:36:28 --> 00:36:29 be crushed.
00:36:31 --> 00:36:32 The evidence is
00:36:32 --> 00:36:32 there for all
00:36:32 --> 00:36:32 to see.
00:36:32 --> 00:36:38 The other
00:36:38 --> 00:36:38 reason that
00:36:38 --> 00:36:39 Jesus was
00:36:39 --> 00:36:40 worshipped by
00:36:40 --> 00:36:41 Jews as
00:36:41 --> 00:36:42 God very
00:36:42 --> 00:36:43 significantly is
00:36:43 --> 00:36:44 that he in
00:36:44 --> 00:36:44 fact came back
00:36:44 --> 00:36:45 to life after
00:36:45 --> 00:36:46 he was
00:36:46 --> 00:36:47 crucified on
00:36:47 --> 00:36:47 a Roman
00:36:47 --> 00:36:48 cross.
00:36:50 --> 00:36:51 And so in
00:36:51 --> 00:36:52 Jesus Christ is
00:36:52 --> 00:36:52 a man who
00:36:52 --> 00:36:53 claimed to be
00:36:53 --> 00:36:55 God, yet who
00:36:55 --> 00:36:56 lived a life so
00:36:56 --> 00:36:57 great that he
00:36:57 --> 00:36:59 became the only
00:36:59 --> 00:37:00 person to
00:37:00 --> 00:37:01 convince a
00:37:01 --> 00:37:02 sizable part of
00:37:02 --> 00:37:04 humanity and
00:37:04 --> 00:37:05 continues to do
00:37:05 --> 00:37:06 so, that he
00:37:06 --> 00:37:07 was in fact who
00:37:07 --> 00:37:08 he said he
00:37:08 --> 00:37:08 was.
00:37:10 --> 00:37:11 And what that
00:37:11 --> 00:37:12 means is that
00:37:12 --> 00:37:14 none of us can
00:37:14 --> 00:37:15 be indifferent to
00:37:15 --> 00:37:15 that claim.
00:37:17 --> 00:37:18 No one can be
00:37:18 --> 00:37:18 indifferent to
00:37:18 --> 00:37:19 that claim.
00:37:19 --> 00:37:20 It's not just
00:37:20 --> 00:37:20 for people of
00:37:20 --> 00:37:21 faith.
00:37:22 --> 00:37:23 We cannot
00:37:23 --> 00:37:25 resolve the
00:37:25 --> 00:37:27 issue by
00:37:27 --> 00:37:29 saying he
00:37:29 --> 00:37:29 was only a
00:37:29 --> 00:37:30 great teacher,
00:37:30 --> 00:37:31 good bloke.
00:37:31 --> 00:37:33 work because
00:37:33 --> 00:37:34 all of his
00:37:34 --> 00:37:35 declarations of
00:37:35 --> 00:37:36 what he said
00:37:36 --> 00:37:36 about himself
00:37:36 --> 00:37:38 do not allow
00:37:38 --> 00:37:38 us just to
00:37:38 --> 00:37:39 land at that
00:37:39 --> 00:37:39 point.
00:37:42 --> 00:37:43 We can't
00:37:43 --> 00:37:44 say, well, he
00:37:44 --> 00:37:45 never really made
00:37:45 --> 00:37:46 those claims about
00:37:46 --> 00:37:47 himself because
00:37:47 --> 00:37:48 all the historical
00:37:48 --> 00:37:49 evidence is there.
00:37:50 --> 00:37:51 We cannot be
00:37:51 --> 00:37:52 content with the
00:37:52 --> 00:37:54 explanation that
00:37:54 --> 00:37:55 he was deranged
00:37:55 --> 00:37:56 or that he
00:37:56 --> 00:37:57 was a fraud
00:37:57 --> 00:37:59 because of the
00:37:59 --> 00:38:01 clear evidence
00:38:01 --> 00:38:02 of his wisdom
00:38:02 --> 00:38:03 and his
00:38:03 --> 00:38:04 greatness and
00:38:04 --> 00:38:05 the impact of
00:38:05 --> 00:38:06 his life on
00:38:06 --> 00:38:06 his followers
00:38:06 --> 00:38:08 and because of
00:38:08 --> 00:38:09 the historical
00:38:09 --> 00:38:10 case for his
00:38:10 --> 00:38:11 resurrection.
00:38:14 --> 00:38:15 And that
00:38:15 --> 00:38:16 leaves us with
00:38:16 --> 00:38:17 the final
00:38:17 --> 00:38:18 possible
00:38:18 --> 00:38:18 explanation,
00:38:19 --> 00:38:20 namely, that
00:38:20 --> 00:38:21 Jesus Christ
00:38:21 --> 00:38:23 is who he
00:38:23 --> 00:38:24 claimed to
00:38:24 --> 00:38:24 be.
00:38:26 --> 00:38:26 And that
00:38:26 --> 00:38:26 is the
00:38:26 --> 00:38:27 creator God
00:38:27 --> 00:38:30 coming into
00:38:30 --> 00:38:31 earth,
00:38:32 --> 00:38:33 siding with
00:38:33 --> 00:38:34 us to
00:38:34 --> 00:38:35 reveal the
00:38:35 --> 00:38:36 God who
00:38:36 --> 00:38:37 made it all
00:38:37 --> 00:38:38 and who
00:38:38 --> 00:38:38 sustains it

00:38:40 --> 00:38:41 You see, as

00:38:41 --> 00:38:42 the universe,
00:38:42 --> 00:38:43 he makes
00:38:43 --> 00:38:43 claims on
00:38:43 --> 00:38:44 every single
00:38:44 --> 00:38:45 one of our
00:38:45 --> 00:38:46 lives.
00:38:46 --> 00:38:48 And what
00:38:48 --> 00:38:48 he said to
00:38:48 --> 00:38:51 Thomas in
