00:01:17 --> 00:01:24 I'm sure the builder regrets putting the minimum effort when they have to go back and fix up,
00:01:24 --> 00:01:28 you know, when the building falls down or when cracks start appearing.
00:01:29 --> 00:01:33 It's the tech company that regrets putting out a product too early
00:01:33 --> 00:01:36 and then having to recall and fix issues.
00:01:38 --> 00:01:42 I wonder if we could use the same description of our lives.
00:01:42 --> 00:01:49 If you're following Jesus, would you say that you are a bare minimum Christian?
00:01:50 --> 00:01:51 I go to church.
00:01:51 --> 00:01:53 I watch church.
00:01:54 --> 00:01:56 I give some.
00:01:56 --> 00:02:00 I have a Bible and I've read parts of it.
00:02:01 --> 00:02:07 But serving Jesus, growing in godliness, being part of a community, being radically generous,
00:02:08 --> 00:02:12 those things are hard and they're not for me right now.
00:02:12 --> 00:02:18 The challenge that we see from the story of the Good Samaritan today
00:02:18 --> 00:02:22 is that we can be tempted to give the bare minimum,
00:02:22 --> 00:02:29 to narrow down what following Jesus looks like into a little easy-to-follow box
00:02:29 --> 00:02:33 instead of seeing Jesus as Lord of our entire life.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:39 The joy of Christianity is that Jesus has saved people
00:02:39 --> 00:02:41 and he calls them to be radical disciples.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:44 Not bare minimum disciples.
00:02:45 --> 00:02:52 The call of hope in Jesus is that our discipleship and giving of ourselves
00:02:52 --> 00:02:55 would reflect all that God has done for us.
00:02:56 --> 00:02:59 So we're going to see this morning a picture of bare minimum disciples.
00:03:00 --> 00:03:05 Jesus will give us a bad example and then he will give us a good example.
00:03:06 --> 00:03:09 We're in the Gospel of Luke this morning in chapter 10.

00:03:19 --> 00:03:26 From Luke chapter 10, where he records an expert in the law getting up and testing Jesus.

00:03:29 --> 00:03:35 Jesus asks him,
00:03:35 --> 00:03:38 Well, what's written in the law in the Old Testament?
00:03:39 --> 00:03:40 How do you read it?
00:03:40 --> 00:03:41 And the man replies,
00:03:42 --> 00:03:47 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength
00:03:47 --> 00:03:51 and with all your mind and love your neighbor as yourself.
00:03:51 --> 00:03:52 Jesus said,
00:03:52 --> 00:03:53 You've answered correctly.
00:03:53 --> 00:03:55 Do this and you will live.
00:03:55 --> 00:03:57 It's a pretty straightforward interaction.
00:03:58 --> 00:03:59 Love God perfectly.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:01 Love your neighbor perfectly.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:03 And you will get eternal life.
00:04:04 --> 00:04:07 Now, I say that kind of sarcastically because,
00:04:07 --> 00:04:10 of course, this is impossible for us.
00:04:10 --> 00:04:13 And it shows us why we need Jesus so much.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:16 But the lawyer wanted to justify himself.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:22 Maybe he's trying to protect himself from the claim that he doesn't deserve eternal life.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:26 And this is definitely in the soul of each of us.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:31 The desire to protect ourselves, to defend our actions.
00:04:31 --> 00:04:31 To say,
00:04:31 --> 00:04:33 Oh, look, I'm not that bad.
00:04:34 --> 00:04:35 You know, I'm not as bad as other people.
00:04:36 --> 00:04:38 Look, there's people that are far worse than me.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:42 And this lawyer wanted to justify himself.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:43 So he asks Jesus,
00:04:44 --> 00:04:45 Well, who is my neighbor?
00:04:45 --> 00:04:47 Father, give me a list.
00:04:48 --> 00:04:53 You give me a list of the neighbors and I'll show you how much I have loved them.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:57 Now, I know three or four lawyers.
00:04:57 --> 00:05:00 And unlike the standard jokes about lawyers,
00:05:00 --> 00:05:02 the lawyers I know are all very lovely people.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:04 They're really great.
00:05:04 --> 00:05:07 And this man, he might have been really lovely.
00:05:07 --> 00:05:09 He may have been really great as well.
00:05:09 --> 00:05:11 He may have been an upstanding citizen.
00:05:11 --> 00:05:15 He may have been kind and compassionate.
00:05:16 --> 00:05:22 But maybe he was just kind and compassionate to the people who fitted his definition of neighbor.
00:05:22 --> 00:05:24 If you were like him,
00:05:25 --> 00:05:27 if you were part of the same tribe as him,
00:05:27 --> 00:05:28 if you were,
00:05:28 --> 00:05:30 if you looked like him and smelt like him,
00:05:30 --> 00:05:31 well, do you know what?
00:05:31 --> 00:05:31 He would love you.
00:05:31 --> 00:05:33 He would show compassion to you.
00:05:34 --> 00:05:37 And so wanting to make sure that he was above that claim,
00:05:37 --> 00:05:39 that he had not fulfilled the law,
00:05:39 --> 00:05:39 he asks,
00:05:40 --> 00:05:41 Well, who is my neighbor?
00:05:41 --> 00:05:45 This is the desire to just do the bare minimum.
00:05:46 --> 00:05:48 Limit the people I need to love, Jesus,
00:05:48 --> 00:05:49 and I will love them.
00:05:50 --> 00:05:53 You tell me who these handful of people are that are my neighbor,
00:05:53 --> 00:05:54 and I can do that.
00:05:55 --> 00:05:55 But in response,
00:05:55 --> 00:05:58 Jesus tells us the famous story of the Good Samaritan.
00:05:59 --> 00:05:59 And first of all,
00:05:59 --> 00:06:01 he shows us the bad example
00:06:01 --> 00:06:04 before he shows us the good example.
00:06:04 --> 00:06:06 Have a look with me at verse 30.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:09 In reply, Jesus said,
00:06:10 --> 00:06:13 A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho
00:06:13 --> 00:06:15 when he was attacked by robbers.
00:06:15 --> 00:06:17 They stripped him of his clothes,
00:06:17 --> 00:06:17 beat him,
00:06:18 --> 00:06:18 and went away,
00:06:19 --> 00:06:20 leaving him half dead.
00:06:21 --> 00:06:22 This man,
00:06:22 --> 00:06:24 although not specifically stated here,
00:06:24 --> 00:06:26 it's most likely that he was Jewish.
00:06:26 --> 00:06:28 He's coming down from Jerusalem,
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 likely from the temple,
00:06:31 --> 00:06:34 and maybe he had been worshipping God
00:06:34 --> 00:06:35 and bringing sacrifices.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:37 And as he's coming down,
00:06:37 --> 00:06:39 he is waylaid by bandits.
00:06:39 --> 00:06:40 He's beaten,
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 he's robbed.
00:06:42 --> 00:06:43 And this is no fault of his own.
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 It's a total accident.
00:06:45 --> 00:06:47 He could not be blamed.
00:06:47 --> 00:06:48 It was just misfortune.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:50 But good news,
00:06:50 --> 00:06:51 salvation comes.
00:06:52 --> 00:06:52 Verse 31,
00:06:53 --> 00:06:56 a priest happened to be going down the same road.
00:06:56 --> 00:06:57 And at this point,
00:06:57 --> 00:06:59 we can be expecting the priest is going to help out.
00:07:00 --> 00:07:01 He's a compassionate guy.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:02 And when he saw the man,
00:07:03 --> 00:07:06 he passed by on the other side.
00:07:07 --> 00:07:08 So to a Levite,
00:07:08 --> 00:07:08 yes,
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 great,
00:07:09 --> 00:07:09 a Levite.
00:07:10 --> 00:07:11 He's going to help him out.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:13 When he came to the place and saw him,
00:07:14 --> 00:07:17 he passed by on the other side.
00:07:18 --> 00:07:20 How did this priest and this Levite
00:07:20 --> 00:07:22 happen to be on the same road?
00:07:22 --> 00:07:26 It's as if God has brought this priest
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 to this very spot
00:07:27 --> 00:07:28 to help this man,
00:07:29 --> 00:07:32 to go and see what his needs are.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 And then a moment later,
00:07:33 --> 00:07:34 when the Levite arrives,
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 they can both help him.
00:07:36 --> 00:07:38 Maybe they can carry him to an inn,
00:07:38 --> 00:07:38 to a hospital.
00:07:39 --> 00:07:41 Maybe one can stay with him
00:07:41 --> 00:07:41 and guard him
00:07:41 --> 00:07:43 while the other goes off
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 to get medical assistance.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:47 And Jesus tells this story
00:07:47 --> 00:07:50 as if God has brought both of these men
00:07:50 --> 00:07:51 to care for this person.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:55 But they both willfully refuse
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 to give aid.
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 And it's far worse
00:07:59 --> 00:08:01 than if they had just found the man.
00:08:02 --> 00:08:04 But Jesus uses their identities
00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 and the location
00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 to show what a bad example they are.
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 In Jesus' story,
00:08:10 --> 00:08:12 both the man who was attacked
00:08:12 --> 00:08:14 and the priest and the Levite,
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 they're coming down
00:08:15 --> 00:08:17 from Jerusalem to Jericho.
00:08:18 --> 00:08:18 Jerusalem,
00:08:18 --> 00:08:21 this is the capital city of Israel.
00:08:21 --> 00:08:22 It's up high.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 It's the location
00:08:24 --> 00:08:25 of where the temple is,
00:08:25 --> 00:08:27 whereas Jericho lies quite low.
00:08:28 --> 00:08:30 The purpose of the priest
00:08:30 --> 00:08:32 being in Jerusalem
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 would have been
00:08:33 --> 00:08:36 for offering service to God.
00:08:36 --> 00:08:36 He would have been
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 working in the temple.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 He could have been
00:08:39 --> 00:08:41 bringing sacrifices.
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 He could have been
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 praising God,
00:08:44 --> 00:08:46 singing holy psalms
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 and prayers.
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 And in the midst
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 of worshipping God
00:08:50 --> 00:08:52 and bringing sacrifices,
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 he had not learned
00:08:54 --> 00:08:56 how to make a sacrifice himself.
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 He had learned
00:08:58 --> 00:08:58 the same message
00:08:58 --> 00:08:59 as the lawyer
00:08:59 --> 00:09:00 to love God
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 and to love his neighbour,
00:09:02 --> 00:09:04 but he did not act upon it.
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 The Levite acted similarly,
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 although not central
00:09:08 --> 00:09:10 to the work inside the temple.
00:09:10 --> 00:09:12 they both had been
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 near to God,
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 but had not
00:09:14 --> 00:09:16 become like God.
00:09:17 --> 00:09:19 Both of these men
00:09:19 --> 00:09:19 were bound
00:09:19 --> 00:09:21 to help the beaten man,
00:09:22 --> 00:09:22 and yet
00:09:22 --> 00:09:24 they came close enough
00:09:24 --> 00:09:25 to see him
00:09:25 --> 00:09:25 and yet
00:09:25 --> 00:09:27 passed him by.
00:09:28 --> 00:09:28 They've
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 slowed down
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 at the site
00:09:30 --> 00:09:30 of a car accident
00:09:30 --> 00:09:32 with people crying out
00:09:32 --> 00:09:32 for help.
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 There's no one around,
00:09:34 --> 00:09:34 but they have
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 driven off.
00:09:35 --> 00:09:38 Charles Spurgeon,
00:09:39 --> 00:09:39 the great preacher,
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 suggested that the reason
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 that they hurried on
00:09:42 --> 00:09:44 and didn't help
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 was because they had
00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 too many great excuses.
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 I've got a quote
00:09:48 --> 00:09:49 from Spurgeon.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 He said,
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 I never knew a man
00:09:52 --> 00:09:53 to refuse
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 to help the poor
00:09:54 --> 00:09:56 who failed to give
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 at least one
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 admirable excuse.
00:09:59 --> 00:09:59 For instance,
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 the priest and the Levite
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 were both in a hurry.
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 The priest had been
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 away for a month,
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 away at Jerusalem
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 from his wife
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 and dear children,
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 and he naturally
00:10:09 --> 00:10:09 wanted to get home.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 If he lingered,
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 the sun might go down.
00:10:13 --> 00:10:13 It was an awkward
00:10:13 --> 00:10:15 place to be
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 after sundown,
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 and he could not
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 expect him to be
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 so imprudent
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 as to stay
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 in a lone place
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 with darkness
00:10:22 --> 00:10:22 coming on.
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 He'd spent a very
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 laborious month
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 in the temple,

00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 he'd promised
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 he'd be home
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 at a certain hour,
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 and he was a man
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 of punctuality,
00:10:42 --> 00:10:44 and would by no means
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 cause anxiety
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 to his wife
00:10:46 --> 00:10:46 and children
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 who would be
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 looking for him
00:10:48 --> 00:10:50 on their house stop.
00:10:51 --> 00:10:51 The thieves
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 might be back again.
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 They were scarcely
00:10:53 --> 00:10:53 out of hearing,
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 and after a month's service,
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 the priest would have
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 had some fees
00:10:57 --> 00:10:57 in his purse,

00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 not to run the risk
00:11:00 --> 00:11:02 of losing the support

00:11:13 --> 00:11:15 philanthropy would suggest

00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 of yourself,
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 as you could not
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 possibly do any good
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 to the poor man.
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 And then the man
00:11:22 --> 00:11:22 might die,
00:11:23 --> 00:11:23 and the person
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 found near the body
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 might be charged
00:11:25 --> 00:11:25 with the murder,
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 and it's always awkward
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 to be found alone
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 in a dark spot
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 with the corpse
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 of one who was
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 evidently suffered
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 from foul play.
00:11:34 --> 00:11:34 Moreover,
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 he could pray
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 for the man.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 All these powerful
00:11:38 --> 00:11:40 reasons put together
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 made him content
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 to save trouble
00:11:42 --> 00:11:44 and leave the doing
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 of kindness
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 to others.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:49 This is a big list
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 of excuses.
00:11:50 --> 00:11:52 It may have made you
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 smile a little bit
00:11:53 --> 00:11:55 at the poor excuses
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 that the priest
00:11:56 --> 00:11:56 may have given.
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 But you know what?
00:11:58 --> 00:11:58 That's me.
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 All I need
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 is a small excuse
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 to justify
00:12:02 --> 00:12:04 not helping someone.
00:12:04 --> 00:12:05 They're fine.
00:12:06 --> 00:12:06 Someone else
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 is going to help them.
00:12:07 --> 00:12:07 You know,
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 I can hear the Levite
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 coming.
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 He's going to help them.
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 Somebody else will do it.
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 I don't need to do it.
00:12:12 --> 00:12:14 But hope
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 in the gospel
00:12:15 --> 00:12:17 calls us
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 to radically
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 love others.
00:12:21 --> 00:12:22 Jesus contrasts
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 the story
00:12:23 --> 00:12:23 of the priest
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 and the Levite
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 with a good example.
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 One they wouldn't
00:12:27 --> 00:12:27 expect
00:12:27 --> 00:12:29 to see help from.
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 So this is our third point
00:12:30 --> 00:12:30 this morning.
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 This is the good example.
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 From verse 33.
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 But a Samaritan
00:12:35 --> 00:12:37 as he travelled
00:12:37 --> 00:12:39 came where
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 the man was.
00:12:40 --> 00:12:42 And when he saw him
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 he took pity on him.
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 He went to him
00:12:44 --> 00:12:45 and bandaged his wounds
00:12:45 --> 00:12:46 pouring on oil
00:12:46 --> 00:12:46 and wine.
00:12:47 --> 00:12:47 Then he put the man
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 on his own donkey
00:12:48 --> 00:12:50 brought him to an inn

00:13:09 --> 00:13:11 They were enemies
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 of the Jews
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 because they had been
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 part of God's people
00:13:14 --> 00:13:16 but they had been
00:13:16 --> 00:13:18 separated to the north
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 and their country
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 had been filled
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 with Gentiles
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 and other people's gods
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 and they worshipped
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 God differently.
00:13:26 --> 00:13:26 And yet
00:13:26 --> 00:13:28 the Samaritans
00:13:28 --> 00:13:28 seized him
00:13:28 --> 00:13:30 like the priest
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 and the Levite did
00:13:31 --> 00:13:33 and took pity on him.
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 He doesn't ask

00:15:19 --> 00:15:21 the word Samaritan
00:15:21 --> 00:15:22 because it's like
00:15:22 --> 00:15:22 a dirty word
00:15:22 --> 00:15:23 in his mouth.
00:15:23 --> 00:15:24 So he doesn't say
00:15:24 --> 00:15:25 it was the Samaritan
00:15:25 --> 00:15:26 it was the one
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 who had mercy
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 on him.
