00:00:30 --> 00:00:35 He was popular at the end of the 19th century,
00:00:35 --> 00:00:37 basically through to the mid-20th century.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:42 A number of his works have been put into movies,
00:00:42 --> 00:00:44 starring Tom Cruise and others.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:49 But he started life, quite interesting, you see this in his work.
00:00:50 --> 00:00:52 He started life hopeful about life,
00:00:53 --> 00:00:56 but ended life quite despondent about life.
00:00:56 --> 00:01:00 He, in fact, started life sympathetic to God
00:01:00 --> 00:01:03 and ended life as a despondent atheist.
00:01:04 --> 00:01:06 And you see this in his writing.
00:01:06 --> 00:01:09 So in his short history of the world, he wrote this.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:13 Can we doubt that presently our race
00:01:13 --> 00:01:17 will more than realise our boldest imaginations,
00:01:18 --> 00:01:21 that it will achieve unity and peace,
00:01:22 --> 00:01:24 and that our children will live in a world
00:01:26 --> 00:01:30 and lovely than any palace or garden that we know,
00:01:31 --> 00:01:34 going on from strength to strength
00:01:34 --> 00:01:38 in an ever-widening circle of achievement.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:42 He wrote those words in 1937.
00:01:44 --> 00:01:45 1937.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:47 Nine years later,
00:01:48 --> 00:01:52 in almost his final piece of writing,
00:01:52 --> 00:01:56 and after the carnage of World War II,
00:01:57 --> 00:01:58 he wrote this.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:03 The cold-blooded massacres of the defenceless,
00:02:04 --> 00:02:07 the return of deliberate and organised torture,
00:02:08 --> 00:02:09 mental torment,
00:02:09 --> 00:02:13 and a fear to a world from which such things
00:02:13 --> 00:02:15 had seemed well-nine banished,
00:02:15 --> 00:02:19 has come near to breaking my spirit altogether.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:21 Homo sapiens,
00:02:21 --> 00:02:24 as has been pleased to call himself,
00:02:25 --> 00:02:26 is played out.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:32 What Wells picks up there,
00:02:32 --> 00:02:34 and what we would pick up,
00:02:35 --> 00:02:37 having, for those of us,
00:02:37 --> 00:02:40 just read the history of the 20th century,
00:02:41 --> 00:02:43 and the carnage of the 20th century,
00:02:43 --> 00:02:45 it's hard to avoid the conclusion
00:02:45 --> 00:02:48 that there is fundamentally something wrong
00:02:48 --> 00:02:49 with this world.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:52 And you just turn on the news,
00:02:52 --> 00:02:53 even this morning,
00:02:54 --> 00:02:56 and you will see multitudes,
00:02:57 --> 00:02:57 options,
00:02:57 --> 00:03:01 varieties of what is fundamentally wrong
00:03:01 --> 00:03:02 with this world.
00:03:03 --> 00:03:04 And every culture,
00:03:04 --> 00:03:05 and every society,
00:03:05 --> 00:03:06 and every time,
00:03:06 --> 00:03:07 every religion,
00:03:07 --> 00:03:08 and philosophy of life,
00:03:08 --> 00:03:10 must give account
00:03:10 --> 00:03:12 to its people
00:03:12 --> 00:03:15 what is fundamentally wrong
00:03:15 --> 00:03:16 with this world,
00:03:16 --> 00:03:17 and therefore,
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 how do you resolve it.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:21 And Good Friday
00:03:21 --> 00:03:24 is Christianity's account
00:03:24 --> 00:03:27 of what is fundamentally wrong
00:03:27 --> 00:03:28 with this world,
00:03:29 --> 00:03:31 and how to fix it.
00:03:31 --> 00:03:35 And in these verses here
00:03:35 --> 00:03:37 that Merle just read out for us,
00:03:38 --> 00:03:40 this fundamentally wrong
00:03:40 --> 00:03:41 with the world
00:03:41 --> 00:03:42 is, if you like,
00:03:43 --> 00:03:45 represented with the image
00:03:45 --> 00:03:47 of darkness.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:48 Darkness.
00:03:51 --> 00:03:55 In verses 52, 53,
00:03:56 --> 00:03:59 Jesus, as the soldiers come
00:03:59 --> 00:04:00 with the religious elite,
00:04:00 --> 00:04:02 draws attention to the fact
00:04:02 --> 00:04:04 that they are acting
00:04:04 --> 00:04:07 under the cloak of darkness
00:04:07 --> 00:04:10 rather than in the daylight.
00:04:10 --> 00:04:11 You had options.
00:04:12 --> 00:04:14 You saw me in the temple courts
00:04:14 --> 00:04:15 in the daylight.
00:04:15 --> 00:04:17 And then he adds this
00:04:17 --> 00:04:19 in verse 53.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:22 This is your hour
00:04:22 --> 00:04:25 when darkness reigns.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:28 Now, Jesus was saying
00:04:28 --> 00:04:28 in that moment,
00:04:29 --> 00:04:29 hey guys,
00:04:29 --> 00:04:30 you know,
00:04:30 --> 00:04:31 it's late at night,
00:04:31 --> 00:04:32 we need a little bit more,
00:04:32 --> 00:04:33 you know,
00:04:33 --> 00:04:34 turn the lights up,
00:04:34 --> 00:04:35 we need a bit more light here.
00:04:36 --> 00:04:37 He's saying here
00:04:37 --> 00:04:40 that the physical darkness,
00:04:41 --> 00:04:43 by the physical darkness
00:04:43 --> 00:04:44 in which all these events
00:04:44 --> 00:04:45 took place,
00:04:46 --> 00:04:47 are pointing to something
00:04:47 --> 00:04:49 that is so much deeper.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:50 A deeper darkness.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:53 A deeper spiritual darkness.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:55 And it's a darkness,
00:04:55 --> 00:04:56 a spiritual darkness
00:04:56 --> 00:04:58 that controls
00:04:58 --> 00:05:00 every human heart,
00:05:00 --> 00:05:00 mind,
00:05:00 --> 00:05:01 and soul.
00:05:04 --> 00:05:05 And what he's saying is,
00:05:06 --> 00:05:09 this is the hour
00:05:09 --> 00:05:12 where that darkness
00:05:12 --> 00:05:15 is clearly on display,
00:05:15 --> 00:05:18 but it's also the hour
00:05:18 --> 00:05:20 where Jesus will
00:05:20 --> 00:05:23 decisively solve
00:05:23 --> 00:05:25 that deep darkness.
00:05:27 --> 00:05:27 And so,
00:05:28 --> 00:05:29 controlled by
00:05:29 --> 00:05:30 this spiritual blindness,
00:05:31 --> 00:05:34 they come to arrest Jesus
00:05:34 --> 00:05:35 and condemn Jesus.
00:05:35 --> 00:05:38 But this is the hour
00:05:38 --> 00:05:39 when the reign
00:05:39 --> 00:05:40 of these
00:05:40 --> 00:05:42 dark spiritual powers
00:05:43 --> 00:05:44 will end.
00:05:45 --> 00:05:45 And so,
00:05:46 --> 00:05:46 that's the text,
00:05:46 --> 00:05:47 get it open,
00:05:47 --> 00:05:48 we've got four points
00:05:49 --> 00:05:50 that we're going to
00:05:50 --> 00:05:51 quickly move through
00:05:51 --> 00:05:53 in this text
00:05:53 --> 00:05:53 to unpack
00:05:53 --> 00:05:55 what that looks like.
00:05:55 --> 00:05:57 the first of it
00:05:57 --> 00:05:57 being
00:05:57 --> 00:05:59 the mocking
00:05:59 --> 00:06:00 of darkness.
00:06:00 --> 00:06:00 Now,
00:06:00 --> 00:06:01 what we notice is
00:06:01 --> 00:06:02 you read through
00:06:02 --> 00:06:03 not just this section
00:06:03 --> 00:06:04 but really
00:06:04 --> 00:06:05 into the next section
00:06:05 --> 00:06:06 as well
00:06:06 --> 00:06:07 as Jesus is crucified
00:06:07 --> 00:06:09 right after the crucifixion.
00:06:09 --> 00:06:10 He's mocked
00:06:10 --> 00:06:10 quite a lot.
00:06:11 --> 00:06:12 He's mocked
00:06:12 --> 00:06:12 for claiming
00:06:12 --> 00:06:13 to be a king,
00:06:13 --> 00:06:14 he's mocked
00:06:14 --> 00:06:16 for claiming
00:06:16 --> 00:06:16 to be God,
00:06:17 --> 00:06:17 he's mocked
00:06:17 --> 00:06:18 to be a saviour,
00:06:19 --> 00:06:21 and notice as well
00:06:21 --> 00:06:22 that
00:06:22 --> 00:06:24 everyone
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 is involved
00:06:25 --> 00:06:26 in the mocking.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:28 It's the Romans,
00:06:28 --> 00:06:29 it's the Jews,
00:06:29 --> 00:06:30 it's the elites,
00:06:31 --> 00:06:32 it's the crowds,
00:06:32 --> 00:06:33 it's the commoner,
00:06:33 --> 00:06:34 everyone
00:06:34 --> 00:06:35 gets involved
00:06:35 --> 00:06:37 in the mocking.
00:06:37 --> 00:06:39 You can't pin
00:06:39 --> 00:06:41 the death of Jesus
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 on the Jews.
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 Everyone's involved.
00:06:46 --> 00:06:47 And you can't pin it
00:06:47 --> 00:06:48 on the Jews
00:06:48 --> 00:06:49 with any shred
00:06:49 --> 00:06:51 of historical credibility.
00:06:52 --> 00:06:53 Everyone's in on it.
00:06:54 --> 00:06:54 And here
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 in verse
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 right at the end
00:06:56 --> 00:06:57 of the passage
00:06:57 --> 00:06:57 we see that
00:06:57 --> 00:06:59 the soldiers
00:06:59 --> 00:07:00 are mocking Jesus
00:07:00 --> 00:07:02 for claiming
00:07:02 --> 00:07:04 to be a prophet.
00:07:05 --> 00:07:07 Verse 64,
00:07:07 --> 00:07:08 they blindfolded him
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 and demanded,
00:07:09 --> 00:07:09 prophesy,
00:07:10 --> 00:07:11 who hit you?
00:07:13 --> 00:07:13 And they said
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 many other
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 insulting things
00:07:15 --> 00:07:15 to him.
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 The irony
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 of their mocking
00:07:18 --> 00:07:22 is that
00:07:22 --> 00:07:22 as they
00:07:22 --> 00:07:23 attack
00:07:23 --> 00:07:25 him
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 and mock
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 his prophetic
00:07:27 --> 00:07:28 powers,
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 they're actually
00:07:30 --> 00:07:31 proving
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 his prophetic
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 powers.
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 Several chapters
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 earlier
00:07:36 --> 00:07:36 in Luke
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 18,
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 we have
00:07:39 --> 00:07:40 he recorded
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 the words
00:07:41 --> 00:07:41 of Jesus
00:07:41 --> 00:07:43 as he's
00:07:43 --> 00:07:43 on his way
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 to Jerusalem
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 telling his
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 disciples
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 what will
00:07:47 --> 00:07:48 happen to
00:07:48 --> 00:07:48 him.
00:07:48 --> 00:07:49 Everything
00:07:49 --> 00:07:49 that is
00:07:49 --> 00:07:49 written
00:07:49 --> 00:07:50 by the
00:07:50 --> 00:07:50 prophets
00:07:50 --> 00:07:50 about
00:07:50 --> 00:07:51 the
00:07:51 --> 00:07:51 son
00:07:51 --> 00:07:51 of
00:07:51 --> 00:07:51 man
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 will
00:07:52 --> 00:07:52 be
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 fulfilled.
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 He'll be
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 delivered over
00:07:55 --> 00:07:55 to the
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 Gentiles
00:07:56 --> 00:07:56 and they
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 will mock
00:07:57 --> 00:07:57 him
00:07:57 --> 00:07:59 and insult
00:07:59 --> 00:07:59 him
00:07:59 --> 00:08:00 and spit
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 on him
00:08:01 --> 00:08:01 and they
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 will flog
00:08:02 --> 00:08:02 him
00:08:02 --> 00:08:03 and kill
00:08:03 --> 00:08:03 him.
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 That's the
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 irony of their
00:08:07 --> 00:08:07 mocking.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:10 But the
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 question is
00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 why are
00:08:12 --> 00:08:12 they mocking
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 him?
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 That's the
00:08:15 --> 00:08:15 issue.
00:08:15 --> 00:08:15 Why are
00:08:15 --> 00:08:16 they mocking
00:08:16 --> 00:08:16 him?
00:08:17 --> 00:08:17 Is it just
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 like a
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 mob thing?
00:08:21 --> 00:08:21 Opportunistic?
00:08:24 --> 00:08:25 It's because
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 Jesus didn't
00:08:26 --> 00:08:28 display what
00:08:28 --> 00:08:28 they would
00:08:28 --> 00:08:29 expect of
00:08:29 --> 00:08:29 a prophet.
00:08:33 --> 00:08:33 He didn't
00:08:33 --> 00:08:35 display the
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 power that
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 they would
00:08:37 --> 00:08:37 expect of
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 a prophet.
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 In their
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 world God
00:08:41 --> 00:08:41 did not
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 work through
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 weakness and
00:08:43 --> 00:08:44 vulnerability.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 Prophets were
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 powerful figures.
00:08:47 --> 00:08:47 In fact even
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 in the Old
00:08:48 --> 00:08:48 Testament the
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 last time a
00:08:49 --> 00:08:49 bunch of
00:08:49 --> 00:08:51 soldiers turned
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 up in order
00:08:52 --> 00:08:52 to arrest one
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 of God's
00:08:53 --> 00:08:53 prophets,
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 fire came
00:08:55 --> 00:08:55 down from
00:08:55 --> 00:08:55 heaven.
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 Three times.
00:08:59 --> 00:09:00 Jesus,
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 where's your
00:09:02 --> 00:09:02 power?
00:09:04 --> 00:09:04 Where's your
00:09:04 --> 00:09:04 power?
00:09:04 --> 00:09:04 power?
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 They looked
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 at his
00:09:08 --> 00:09:08 suffering,
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 they looked
00:09:09 --> 00:09:09 at his
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 weakness,
00:09:10 --> 00:09:10 his
00:09:10 --> 00:09:10 vulnerability
00:09:10 --> 00:09:11 and they
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 mocked him
00:09:12 --> 00:09:16 because he
00:09:16 --> 00:09:16 didn't fit
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 into their
00:09:17 --> 00:09:18 categories.
00:09:19 --> 00:09:19 They were
00:09:19 --> 00:09:21 blinded to
00:09:21 --> 00:09:21 who he
00:09:21 --> 00:09:23 really was.
00:09:23 --> 00:09:25 blinded to
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 us.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:26 And part
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 of this
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 deep
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 spiritual
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 blindness,
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 this deep
00:09:31 --> 00:09:32 darkness of
00:09:32 --> 00:09:32 spiritual
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 blindness,
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 humanity
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 looks out
00:09:36 --> 00:09:36 into our
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 world of
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 suffering and
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 of injustice
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 and evil
00:09:40 --> 00:09:40 and we
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 conclude
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 there clearly
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 cannot be a
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 God.
00:09:44 --> 00:09:44 God.
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 You can't
00:09:50 --> 00:09:50 have a
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 God and
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 suffering
00:09:52 --> 00:09:54 or at
00:09:54 --> 00:09:54 the very
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 least you
00:09:55 --> 00:09:55 can't have a
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 good God
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 and suffering
00:09:57 --> 00:10:01 because none
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 of those
00:10:02 --> 00:10:02 categories
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 fit
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 ours.
00:10:05 --> 00:10:05 They don't
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 fit our
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 category the
00:10:07 --> 00:10:07 way the
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 world works
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 because we
00:10:09 --> 00:10:09 think if
00:10:09 --> 00:10:09 there is a
00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 God,
00:10:10 --> 00:10:10 he would
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 exhort his
00:10:11 --> 00:10:11 power,
00:10:12 --> 00:10:12 boom,
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 and wipe
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 out all
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 evil.
00:10:19 --> 00:10:19 And so
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 when we
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 experience a
00:10:21 --> 00:10:21 dark world,
00:10:23 --> 00:10:23 when the
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 dark clouds
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 come around
00:10:25 --> 00:10:25 our life,
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 we mock
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 too,
00:10:28 --> 00:10:28 don't we?
00:10:30 --> 00:10:30 Don't we
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 join in the
00:10:31 --> 00:10:31 mocking?
00:10:34 --> 00:10:34 Clearly
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 God doesn't
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 exist,
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 otherwise he
00:10:37 --> 00:10:37 would stop
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 this.
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 Or clearly
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 God is not
00:10:40 --> 00:10:40 a good
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 God.
00:10:42 --> 00:10:44 God is
00:10:44 --> 00:10:46 wrong.
00:10:46 --> 00:10:46 But what
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 if our
00:10:47 --> 00:10:47 categories are
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 wrong?
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 What if our
00:10:50 --> 00:10:50 categories are
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 all wrong?
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 I remember
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 one day,
00:10:56 --> 00:10:56 actually it's
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 happened a few
00:10:57 --> 00:10:57 occasions,
00:10:57 --> 00:10:57 but one
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 particular day,
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 taking off in
00:11:00 --> 00:11:00 an aeroplane.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 And this
00:11:02 --> 00:11:04 day was a
00:11:04 --> 00:11:06 stormy day.
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 It was one
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 of those
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 really wet
00:11:10 --> 00:11:10 stormy,
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 where the
00:11:11 --> 00:11:11 clouds were
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 dark,
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 and it
00:11:14 --> 00:11:14 felt like
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 the sun
00:11:15 --> 00:11:17 doesn't exist.
00:11:17 --> 00:11:17 It was like
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 turn the
00:11:18 --> 00:11:18 lights off,
00:11:19 --> 00:11:19 back on
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 again.
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 And it
00:11:21 --> 00:11:21 was the
00:11:21 --> 00:11:21 middle of
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 the day,
00:11:22 --> 00:11:22 and as we
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 took off,
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 it was
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 dark,
00:11:25 --> 00:11:25 and as we
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 went into
00:11:26 --> 00:11:26 the clouds,
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 the cabin of
00:11:28 --> 00:11:28 the aircraft
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 just got
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 darker and
00:11:30 --> 00:11:30 darker.
00:11:31 --> 00:11:31 It was
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 eerie.
00:11:35 --> 00:11:35 And we
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 bumped our
00:11:36 --> 00:11:36 way through
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 the clouds,
00:11:37 --> 00:11:37 and then
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 gradually the
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 darkness
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 within the
00:11:40 --> 00:11:40 cabin,
00:11:41 --> 00:11:41 you could
00:11:41 --> 00:11:41 see just
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 lifting a
00:11:42 --> 00:11:42 little bit,
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 and then
00:11:43 --> 00:11:43 there was
00:11:43 --> 00:11:43 this,
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 you know,
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 a moment
00:11:45 --> 00:11:45 of a
00:11:45 --> 00:11:47 sunlight just
00:11:47 --> 00:11:47 sort of
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 beamed through
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 the window,
00:11:50 --> 00:11:50 and then
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 within moments

00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 problem

00:13:12 --> 00:13:12 the kiss
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 of Judas
00:13:13 --> 00:13:13 that actually
00:13:13 --> 00:13:15 points to
00:13:15 --> 00:13:18 the depths
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 of this
00:13:19 --> 00:13:19 problem.
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 The kiss
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 of Judas
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 is very,
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 very
00:13:24 --> 00:13:24 significant.
00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 It's the
00:13:26 --> 00:13:27 kiss of
00:13:27 --> 00:13:27 darkness.
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 Verse 47,
00:13:29 --> 00:13:31 the man
00:13:31 --> 00:13:31 who was
00:13:31 --> 00:13:31 called
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 Judas,
00:13:32 --> 00:13:32 one of the
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 twelve,
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 was leading
00:13:34 --> 00:13:34 them.
00:13:35 --> 00:13:35 That is,
00:13:36 --> 00:13:36 the soldiers
00:13:36 --> 00:13:38 and religious
00:13:38 --> 00:13:38 elite.
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 And he
00:13:39 --> 00:13:39 approached
00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 Jesus to
00:13:40 --> 00:13:40 kiss him.
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 But Jesus
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 asked him,
00:13:43 --> 00:13:43 Judas,
00:13:43 --> 00:13:45 are you
00:13:45 --> 00:13:46 betraying the
00:13:46 --> 00:13:46 son of
00:13:46 --> 00:13:47 man with
00:13:47 --> 00:13:47 a kiss?
00:13:49 --> 00:13:49 Now,
00:13:50 --> 00:13:52 in Jesus'
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 time and
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 culture,
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 disciples
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 were never
00:13:57 --> 00:13:59 permitted to
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 greet their
00:14:00 --> 00:14:00 teacher
00:14:00 --> 00:14:02 first.
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 Because in
00:14:04 --> 00:14:05 greeting the
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 teacher, it
00:14:06 --> 00:14:07 implies equality
00:14:07 --> 00:14:07 with the
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 teacher.
00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 And so
00:14:09 --> 00:14:10 a disciple
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 in this
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 moment would
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 greet the
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 other disciples
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 first and
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 then they
00:14:16 --> 00:14:17 would greet
00:14:17 --> 00:14:17 the teacher
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 to show
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 deference.
00:14:21 --> 00:14:21 And so
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 Judas'
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 kiss here
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 in the
00:14:24 --> 00:14:24 darkness
00:14:24 --> 00:14:26 was not
00:14:26 --> 00:14:27 simply a
00:14:27 --> 00:14:28 signal to
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 the mob
00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 that this
00:14:30 --> 00:14:31 is Jesus.
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 This is the
00:14:32 --> 00:14:32 one you're
00:14:32 --> 00:14:32 looking for.
00:14:33 --> 00:14:33 I'll point
00:14:33 --> 00:14:33 him out to
00:14:33 --> 00:14:34 you.
00:14:34 --> 00:14:35 But it
00:14:35 --> 00:14:36 is in
00:14:36 --> 00:14:37 fact an
00:14:37 --> 00:14:37 act of
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 rejection.
00:14:39 --> 00:14:40 It's an
00:14:40 --> 00:14:40 act of
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 independence.
00:14:43 --> 00:14:43 He was
00:14:43 --> 00:14:44 saying to
00:14:44 --> 00:14:45 Jesus in
00:14:45 --> 00:14:46 this moment,
00:14:47 --> 00:14:47 you are no
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 longer my
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 rabbi,
00:14:50 --> 00:14:52 I am
00:14:52 --> 00:14:52 your equal.
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 And I
00:14:57 --> 00:14:58 don't need
00:14:58 --> 00:14:58 you.

00:15:04 --> 00:15:05 rejection
00:15:05 --> 00:15:07 of a

00:15:20 --> 00:15:21 rejection of
00:15:21 --> 00:15:22 an enemy.
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 It is
00:15:27 --> 00:15:27 shocking
00:15:27 --> 00:15:30 what he
00:15:30 --> 00:15:30 did in
00:15:30 --> 00:15:31 this moment
00:15:31 --> 00:15:34 and what
00:15:34 --> 00:15:34 it meant
00:15:34 --> 00:15:35 for Jesus
00:15:35 --> 00:15:35 in this
00:15:35 --> 00:15:36 moment.

00:16:59 --> 00:16:59 the Bible
00:16:59 --> 00:17:00 calls
00:17:00 --> 00:17:01 sin.
00:17:02 --> 00:17:02 And it
00:17:02 --> 00:17:05 is the
00:17:05 --> 00:17:05 source
00:17:05 --> 00:17:07 of the
00:17:07 --> 00:17:07 deep
00:17:07 --> 00:17:08 spiritual
00:17:08 --> 00:17:08 darkness
00:17:08 --> 00:17:09 of humanity.
00:17:10 --> 00:17:11 It is
00:17:11 --> 00:17:12 sin
00:17:12 --> 00:17:14 is living
00:17:14 --> 00:17:14 as if
00:17:14 --> 00:17:15 God
00:17:15 --> 00:17:15 does not
00:17:15 --> 00:17:16 exist.
00:17:17 --> 00:17:17 It is
00:17:17 --> 00:17:18 rejection
00:17:18 --> 00:17:19 of him
00:17:19 --> 00:17:20 over my
00:17:20 --> 00:17:21 life and
00:17:21 --> 00:17:21 in relation
00:17:21 --> 00:17:22 with my
00:17:22 --> 00:17:22 life.
00:17:22 --> 00:17:23 You see,
00:17:23 --> 00:17:23 what the
00:17:23 --> 00:17:24 Bible says,
00:17:24 --> 00:17:25 Christian faith
00:17:25 --> 00:17:25 in terms
00:17:25 --> 00:17:26 of our
00:17:26 --> 00:17:26 worldview
00:17:26 --> 00:17:27 is God
00:17:27 --> 00:17:27 created
00:17:27 --> 00:17:28 humanity
00:17:28 --> 00:17:29 to enjoy
00:17:29 --> 00:17:30 a relationship
00:17:30 --> 00:17:31 with him
00:17:31 --> 00:17:31 and to
00:17:31 --> 00:17:32 have that
00:17:32 --> 00:17:32 relationship
00:17:32 --> 00:17:33 with God
00:17:33 --> 00:17:33 at the
00:17:33 --> 00:17:33 center of
00:17:33 --> 00:17:34 our lives.

00:17:36 --> 00:17:37 therefore is

00:17:38 --> 00:17:39 in the Bible

00:17:42 --> 00:17:43 rules.
00:17:44 --> 00:17:44 That's
00:17:44 --> 00:17:44 not
00:17:44 --> 00:17:45 fundamentally
00:17:45 --> 00:17:45 what sin
00:17:45 --> 00:17:46 is.
00:17:47 --> 00:17:47 At the
00:17:47 --> 00:17:48 deepest
00:17:48 --> 00:17:48 level,
