Hope for the Hopeless

00:00:22 --> 00:00:29 in leadership. She had a Sunday free and was extremely excited that she could do a
00:00:29 --> 00:00:39 number of churches in London if she got her timing just right. If she started out very
00:00:40 --> 00:00:46 early in the morning, she could travel to All Souls Langham Place and hear a great preacher.
00:00:47 --> 00:00:53 Then she could cut across town to go to Holy Trinity Brompton and then she could come back
00:00:53 --> 00:00:59 to All Souls and maybe go back to Holy Trinity Brompton again. But the timing had to be
00:00:59 --> 00:01:06 just so. Now, I don't know if you know London, but London in the back streets, they all swerve
00:01:07 --> 00:01:18 and curve. And this person, she thought that she could take a shortcut to ensure that she
00:01:18 --> 00:01:23 got to All Souls Langham Place with plenty of time to hear this great preaching.
00:01:23 --> 00:01:34 But those curves and those swerves meant that she got lost and very seriously lost.
00:01:36 --> 00:01:43 And then she didn't know if she was heading north, south, east or west and frustration would
00:01:43 --> 00:01:45 be a total understatement.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:55 Now, suddenly in her path along one of these back streets, there was an old lady who politely
00:01:55 --> 00:02:06 asked if she could be helped. But this woman who was heading off to church, she brushed the
00:02:06 --> 00:02:13 woman aside because she was in a hurry. And so the woman asked a second time, could she ask a
00:02:13 --> 00:02:21 question? She needed a bit of help? And she was brushed aside a second time because she was heading
00:02:21 --> 00:02:30 to church. A very similar story to what we heard last week with the Good Samaritan, isn't it?
00:02:30 --> 00:02:41 Now, today's passage addresses attitudes like this, where selfishness reigns and helping the hopeless
00:02:41 --> 00:02:52 is not given freely. We are on to our second last message of our Share Hope series. And today is hope
00:02:52 --> 00:03:02 for the hopeless. Now, there's an outline in the St. Paul's app if you wish to go there to take any
00:03:02 --> 00:03:12 notes. And so please, please do that. But we're going to look at two main aspects of this topic today.
00:03:13 --> 00:03:21 What does it actually really mean to be people of hope? And secondly, how can we help the hopeless?
00:03:22 --> 00:03:31 Now, when we look at both the Matthew passage and the Romans passage today, we see the seriousness
00:03:31 --> 00:03:41 of what Jesus is saying, and we need to pay very, very close attention to that. In Romans 3,
00:03:41 --> 00:03:51 we see that there is an equal playing field, if you wish. That is, we are all sinners.
00:03:51 --> 00:04:02 No one is righteous on their own, and we do not seek God. Let's look at verses 9 to 12 in the Romans passage.
00:04:03 --> 00:04:12 What shall we conclude then? Do we have an advantage? Not at all. For we have already made the charge
00:04:12 --> 00:04:39 that Jews and Gentiles alike. But the good news is Jesus.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:50 His life, his death and resurrection, in him, we can find life and forgiveness and faith.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:58 Hope is given to those who trust him. It has nothing to do with us.
00:04:58 --> 00:05:11 It has nothing to do with who we love and how well we love people. It's all about what Jesus has done.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:23 Hence, no person is better than the other. And with this hope comes changed lives.
00:05:23 --> 00:05:33 Jesus, in the Matthew passage, clearly expects to see his followers live differently.
00:05:34 --> 00:05:42 Hope brings changes. Our hope in Jesus is to drive us to something different.
00:05:42 --> 00:05:54 Because we have forgiveness. We have grace. We have purpose, security, compassion, mercy, character,
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 understanding, and much, much more.
00:05:58 --> 00:06:06 As people of hope, even though there is chaos around us,
00:06:06 --> 00:06:15 we can be confident and calm in the storm because Jesus promises never to leave us nor forsake us.
00:06:16 --> 00:06:21 And when doubts of God's goodness come into our minds,
00:06:22 --> 00:06:28 we can stop and remember all that God has done for us in Jesus.
00:06:28 --> 00:06:40 And we can hand over to him all of those doubts and those fears and those concerns and all those anxieties at the foot of the cross.
00:06:42 --> 00:06:51 And we can remember and have confidence that if we fail to trust God in a particular situation,
00:06:51 --> 00:07:02 we can still turn to him and repent and be very confident of his forgiveness and his grace
00:07:02 --> 00:07:07 because his grace is sufficient for us.
00:07:09 --> 00:07:18 Or alternatively, we could be people who worry and live in fear,
00:07:18 --> 00:07:24 who are anxious about the world and anxious of our day-to-day circumstances
00:07:25 --> 00:07:28 and the discrepancies that happen around us.
00:07:30 --> 00:07:33 Are you worried about your future?
00:07:34 --> 00:07:38 Choosing not to be an authentic Christian
00:07:38 --> 00:07:46 because you're looking for acceptance from the people around you
00:07:46 --> 00:07:49 rather than acceptance from Jesus himself?
00:07:51 --> 00:07:55 Or are you concerned about your finances
00:07:55 --> 00:07:58 so you choose not to be radically generous?
00:08:00 --> 00:08:06 Or are you choosing only to be the so-called righteous Christian
00:08:06 --> 00:08:10 on the day that you watch this live stream?
00:08:12 --> 00:08:14 The question remains,
00:08:14 --> 00:08:21 Are you, am I, a person of hope?
00:08:22 --> 00:08:25 Because we have everything, friends.
00:08:26 --> 00:08:30 Everything we need, we have in Jesus.
00:08:32 --> 00:08:36 Yes, life can be tough.
00:08:37 --> 00:08:41 Yes, you may be struggling at present financially
00:08:41 --> 00:08:45 because you have lost your job through this COVID period.
00:08:47 --> 00:08:50 Yes, there may be broken relationships
00:08:50 --> 00:08:53 that you long to have restored.
00:08:54 --> 00:08:59 There may be uncertainty of a future
00:08:59 --> 00:09:04 or there may be health issues with either you or a loved one.
00:09:04 --> 00:09:11 But we still have everything we need in Jesus.
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 Despite all of that,
00:09:13 --> 00:09:16 we have a hope that is eternal
00:09:16 --> 00:09:19 if you are a follower of him.
00:09:21 --> 00:09:26 Now, the tough life might be a surprise to us.
00:09:27 --> 00:09:29 COVID certainly was a surprise to us.
00:09:29 --> 00:09:32 But let me say,
00:09:32 --> 00:09:34 nothing is a surprise to God.
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 The test is,
00:09:38 --> 00:09:42 how are we going to live through the tough times?
00:09:43 --> 00:09:46 And where are we going to put our faith
00:09:46 --> 00:09:49 and our trust in the tough times?
00:09:49 --> 00:09:53 Now, here at St. Paul's,
00:09:53 --> 00:09:56 we want to give this hope
00:09:56 --> 00:09:59 to those who do not yet know it.
00:10:00 --> 00:10:00 The hopeless.
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 We want to see justice.
00:10:04 --> 00:10:06 We want to see lives changed.
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 We want to see people come to know Jesus
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 as Lord and Saviour.
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 But here's the thing, though.
00:10:12 --> 00:10:17 You need to be very confident
00:10:17 --> 00:10:20 of the gift from Christ
00:10:20 --> 00:10:23 that is a sure hope.
00:10:24 --> 00:10:27 And if you waver in this confidence,
00:10:28 --> 00:10:32 you will not be able to give hope
00:10:32 --> 00:10:34 to the hopeless.
00:10:35 --> 00:10:39 You cannot give away what you do not have.
00:10:39 --> 00:10:45 Now, you will hold on to money
00:10:45 --> 00:10:48 and possessions for yourself or your family
00:10:48 --> 00:10:50 if you do not have this hope.
00:10:51 --> 00:10:54 You will be consumed about yourself
00:10:54 --> 00:10:59 and you will not look outwards.
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 And dare I say,
00:11:01 --> 00:11:04 you will be in great spiritual danger.
00:11:04 --> 00:11:10 In Matthew verse 31, we read,
00:11:10 --> 00:11:13 when the Son of Man comes in his glory
00:11:13 --> 00:11:15 and all the angels with him,
00:11:15 --> 00:11:18 he will sit on his glorious throne.
00:11:18 --> 00:11:21 All the nations will be gathered before him
00:11:21 --> 00:11:23 and he will separate the people
00:11:23 --> 00:11:25 one from another
00:11:25 --> 00:11:28 as a shepherd separates the sheep
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 from the goats.
00:11:29 --> 00:11:33 He will put the sheep on his right
00:11:33 --> 00:11:36 and the goats on his left.
00:11:38 --> 00:11:42 The sheep are those who follow Jesus
00:11:42 --> 00:11:46 and have an eternal inheritance
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 waiting for them.
00:11:49 --> 00:11:53 They are the ones who obey the commands.
00:11:55 --> 00:11:58 Those who ignore the commands of God
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 to help the hopeless
00:11:59 --> 00:12:03 are liable to be cast to the left
00:12:03 --> 00:12:05 with the goats.
00:12:07 --> 00:12:12 Now, this needs some self-reflection.
00:12:14 --> 00:12:17 Are you a sheep
00:12:17 --> 00:12:20 or are you a goat?
00:12:21 --> 00:12:23 Are you truly aware
00:12:23 --> 00:12:26 of your need of a saviour
00:12:26 --> 00:12:29 and you are in awe
00:12:29 --> 00:12:31 of the forgiveness
00:12:31 --> 00:12:33 that Jesus has won for you?
00:12:34 --> 00:12:36 Is your character
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 growing
00:12:37 --> 00:12:40 into being more and more Christ-like?
00:12:42 --> 00:12:44 Is there a willingness
00:12:44 --> 00:12:46 for sacrificial
00:12:46 --> 00:12:49 and unconditional love
00:12:49 --> 00:12:51 to those
00:12:51 --> 00:12:53 in need of Jesus
00:12:53 --> 00:12:56 as Jesus would desire
00:12:56 --> 00:12:58 of a follower of his?
00:12:59 --> 00:13:02 What I'm asking of you is this.
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 Is for you
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 to know
00:13:06 --> 00:13:08 where you are
00:13:08 --> 00:13:11 at this moment in time.
00:13:11 --> 00:13:15 Are you standing
00:13:15 --> 00:13:17 in a place
00:13:17 --> 00:13:19 marked
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 with hope?
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 Now, you know
00:13:25 --> 00:13:27 in shopping malls
00:13:27 --> 00:13:29 and maybe at the airport
00:13:29 --> 00:13:29 two places
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 that
00:13:30 --> 00:13:32 I haven't been too much
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 in this COVID period
00:13:33 --> 00:13:35 but you know
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 those
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 directories
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 and
00:13:38 --> 00:13:40 it shows you
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 where you
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 want to go.
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 But a key part
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 of those directories
00:13:45 --> 00:13:46 is that there's
00:13:46 --> 00:13:47 this cross
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 that says
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 you are here
00:13:49 --> 00:13:51 and
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 once you know
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 where you are
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 and you know
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 the destination
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 you want to go to
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 you can
00:13:57 --> 00:13:58 work out
00:13:58 --> 00:14:00 how to get there.
00:14:02 --> 00:14:04 Now, you can stand
00:14:04 --> 00:14:05 in front of
00:14:05 --> 00:14:07 a map
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 of that nature
00:14:08 --> 00:14:10 that does not
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 have the cross
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 on it
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 you could stand
00:14:13 --> 00:14:15 there all day
00:14:15 --> 00:14:15 long
00:14:15 --> 00:14:17 and see
00:14:17 --> 00:14:17 where you want
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 to go
00:14:18 --> 00:14:20 and have no idea
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 how to get to it
00:14:21 --> 00:14:23 because you don't
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 know where you are
00:14:24 --> 00:14:25 at this moment
00:14:25 --> 00:14:25 in time.
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 We all
00:14:32 --> 00:14:33 need to stop
00:14:33 --> 00:14:35 and think
00:14:35 --> 00:14:37 where am I
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 right now
00:14:38 --> 00:14:40 in relationship
00:14:40 --> 00:14:42 to the cross.
00:14:44 --> 00:14:45 Am I
00:14:45 --> 00:14:45 truly
00:14:45 --> 00:14:47 confident
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 in the hope
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 of Jesus
00:14:49 --> 00:14:50 or am I
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 fluctuating
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 with all
00:14:52 --> 00:14:53 that the world
00:14:53 --> 00:14:53 is throwing
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 at me?
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 If so
00:14:57 --> 00:14:58 what are you
00:14:58 --> 00:14:59 going to do
00:14:59 --> 00:15:00 about it?
00:15:00 --> 00:15:04 it will be
00:15:04 --> 00:15:04 different
00:15:04 --> 00:15:05 for each
00:15:05 --> 00:15:06 of us
00:15:06 --> 00:15:07 but once
00:15:07 --> 00:15:08 we know
00:15:08 --> 00:15:10 that
00:15:10 --> 00:15:11 the piece
00:15:11 --> 00:15:12 of information
00:15:12 --> 00:15:13 of where
00:15:13 --> 00:15:14 we are
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 right now
00:15:15 --> 00:15:17 and our
00:15:17 --> 00:15:17 destination
00:15:17 --> 00:15:19 then we
00:15:19 --> 00:15:20 can determine
00:15:20 --> 00:15:21 the direction
00:15:21 --> 00:15:22 of which
00:15:22 --> 00:15:22 to go
00:15:22 --> 00:15:24 so that
00:15:24 --> 00:15:25 we can be
00:15:25 --> 00:15:25 people
00:15:25 --> 00:15:27 who have
00:15:27 --> 00:15:27 hope
00:15:27 --> 00:15:29 and we
00:15:29 --> 00:15:29 can give
00:15:29 --> 00:15:30 that
00:15:30 --> 00:15:31 to others.

00:15:34 --> 00:15:36 I'm going

00:15:39 --> 00:15:40 of hope

00:15:44 --> 00:15:44 Christ

00:15:48 --> 00:15:49 need to
00:15:49 --> 00:15:50 discern
00:15:50 --> 00:15:52 where

00:15:53 --> 00:15:54 this hope

00:16:13 --> 00:16:13 are everywhere.
00:16:14 --> 00:16:15 Opportunities
00:16:15 --> 00:16:18 are so
00:16:18 --> 00:16:18 grand.
00:16:19 --> 00:16:20 Situations
00:16:20 --> 00:16:21 so different.
00:16:21 --> 00:16:24 we cannot
00:16:24 --> 00:16:25 physically
00:16:25 --> 00:16:26 help
00:16:26 --> 00:16:27 every
00:16:27 --> 00:16:28 hopeless
00:16:28 --> 00:16:29 person.
00:16:31 --> 00:16:31 We
00:16:31 --> 00:16:32 cannot
00:16:32 --> 00:16:32 physically
00:16:32 --> 00:16:33 help
00:16:33 --> 00:16:34 every
00:16:34 --> 00:16:35 ministry
00:16:35 --> 00:16:36 or
00:16:36 --> 00:16:37 every
00:16:37 --> 00:16:37 situation.
00:16:38 --> 00:16:39 That
00:16:39 --> 00:16:39 would be
00:16:39 --> 00:16:40 impossible.
00:16:43 --> 00:16:44 But we
00:16:44 --> 00:16:44 do need
00:16:44 --> 00:16:45 to start
00:16:45 --> 00:16:45 somewhere.
00:16:46 --> 00:16:47 Whilst
00:16:47 --> 00:16:47 writing
00:16:47 --> 00:16:47 this I
00:16:47 --> 00:16:48 was reminded
00:16:48 --> 00:16:49 of an
00:16:49 --> 00:16:49 old
00:16:49 --> 00:16:49 camp
00:16:49 --> 00:16:50 song

00:16:51 --> 00:16:51 many
00:16:51 --> 00:16:52 many

00:17:09 --> 00:17:09 something.
00:17:10 --> 00:17:10 Just give
00:17:10 --> 00:17:11 a spark.
00:17:14 --> 00:17:14 So let
00:17:14 --> 00:17:15 me share
00:17:15 --> 00:17:16 a principle
00:17:16 --> 00:17:16 with you
00:17:16 --> 00:17:17 that I
00:17:17 --> 00:17:17 learnt many
00:17:17 --> 00:17:18 years ago
00:17:18 --> 00:17:18 and I
00:17:18 --> 00:17:19 still follow
00:17:19 --> 00:17:19 to this
00:17:19 --> 00:17:20 day really.
00:17:21 --> 00:17:21 And that
00:17:21 --> 00:17:23 is we
00:17:23 --> 00:17:23 need to
00:17:23 --> 00:17:25 develop a
00:17:25 --> 00:17:26 holy
00:17:26 --> 00:17:27 discontent.
00:17:29 --> 00:17:29 Now when
00:17:29 --> 00:17:30 you look
00:17:30 --> 00:17:31 at our
00:17:31 --> 00:17:31 world,
00:17:32 --> 00:17:32 our
00:17:32 --> 00:17:33 country,
00:17:34 --> 00:17:34 our
00:17:34 --> 00:17:35 community,
00:17:35 --> 00:17:35 our
00:17:35 --> 00:17:36 neighbours,
00:17:37 --> 00:17:38 what
00:17:38 --> 00:17:39 upsets
00:17:39 --> 00:17:39 you?
00:17:40 --> 00:17:41 What
00:17:41 --> 00:17:42 stirs
00:17:42 --> 00:17:43 within your
00:17:43 --> 00:17:43 heart when
00:17:43 --> 00:17:44 you see
00:17:44 --> 00:17:45 injustice?
00:17:46 --> 00:17:47 What
00:17:47 --> 00:17:47 causes
00:17:47 --> 00:17:48 tension
00:17:48 --> 00:17:49 within
00:17:49 --> 00:17:50 you?
00:17:51 --> 00:17:52 Now I'm
00:17:52 --> 00:17:53 not talking
00:17:53 --> 00:17:54 about the
00:17:54 --> 00:17:54 sort of
00:17:54 --> 00:17:55 injustice
00:17:55 --> 00:17:57 toward you
00:17:57 --> 00:17:58 or situations
00:17:58 --> 00:17:58 where you're
00:17:58 --> 00:17:59 saying this
00:17:59 --> 00:18:00 isn't fair,
00:18:00 --> 00:18:01 I deserve
00:18:01 --> 00:18:01 better.
00:18:02 --> 00:18:03 That's an
00:18:03 --> 00:18:03 inward
00:18:03 --> 00:18:04 looking
00:18:04 --> 00:18:05 situation.
00:18:06 --> 00:18:06 Our focus
00:18:06 --> 00:18:07 as always
00:18:07 --> 00:18:08 is to be
00:18:08 --> 00:18:09 outward
00:18:09 --> 00:18:09 looking.
00:18:10 --> 00:18:11 So I'm
00:18:11 --> 00:18:12 talking about
00:18:12 --> 00:18:13 knowing
00:18:13 --> 00:18:15 what Jesus
00:18:15 --> 00:18:16 desires,
00:18:17 --> 00:18:18 that he
00:18:18 --> 00:18:19 is for
00:18:19 --> 00:18:20 justice
00:18:20 --> 00:18:21 to reign,
00:18:22 --> 00:18:24 for God's
00:18:24 --> 00:18:25 people to
00:18:25 --> 00:18:26 stand up
00:18:26 --> 00:18:27 and to be
00:18:27 --> 00:18:27 counted,
00:18:28 --> 00:18:29 for God
00:18:29 --> 00:18:30 to be
00:18:30 --> 00:18:31 glorified
00:18:31 --> 00:18:32 and for
00:18:32 --> 00:18:33 his people
00:18:33 --> 00:18:34 to know
00:18:34 --> 00:18:35 this
00:18:35 --> 00:18:36 Jesus
00:18:36 --> 00:18:38 and the
00:18:38 --> 00:18:38 life that
00:18:38 --> 00:18:39 he gives.
00:18:39 --> 00:18:40 That's what
00:18:40 --> 00:18:40 God wants.
00:18:41 --> 00:18:42 His
00:18:42 --> 00:18:42 kingdom,
00:18:43 --> 00:18:44 justice
00:18:44 --> 00:18:44 to reign.
00:18:47 --> 00:18:48 So what
00:18:48 --> 00:18:49 small thing
00:18:49 --> 00:18:50 triggers
