00:00:26 --> 00:00:32 asking him specifically one of one of the questions they asked him was what motivated him
00:00:32 --> 00:00:38 to go to university and to study university and eventually took him down the line of
00:00:38 --> 00:00:43 becoming a footballer he said and his answer was really interesting he says my father
00:00:43 --> 00:00:51 and my uncle were human cannonballs in the carnivals and my father said to me one day son either go to
00:00:51 --> 00:00:56 university or become a human cannonball and he said then one day while i was working out the
00:00:56 --> 00:01:04 decision which way to go he said my uncle was shot out of the cannon missed the net hit the ferris wheel
00:01:04 --> 00:01:10 and died he said at that point i decided to go to university now self-reservation in that moment
00:01:10 --> 00:01:19 seems a really good reason a good motive uh um there are motive however is one of those strange things to
00:01:19 --> 00:01:25 work out because often motives are mixed uh and even for the christian in fact probably and especially
00:01:25 --> 00:01:30 for the christian for instance what has motivated you this morning to tune into uh this service
00:01:30 --> 00:01:37 uh what motivates you as a christian to do uh spiritual disciplines why read your bible why pray
00:01:37 --> 00:01:44 what motivates you to give of your resources what motivates you to serve other people what motivates you to
00:01:44 --> 00:01:54 show mercy and as we launch out into this uh season of mission month and thinking about sharing the hope
00:01:54 --> 00:02:00 that we have in jesus the very first place you want to start is what is our motive to do such things
00:02:00 --> 00:02:08 and this is really really really important for us to wrestle with as we as christians and as a church
00:02:08 --> 00:02:13 as we seek to love the vulnerable and the needy of our community we love and the compassion the mercy of
00:02:13 --> 00:02:20 jesus christ what is the motive for us doing so so if you've got the st paul's app open right now
00:02:20 --> 00:02:24 you'll see i've got three points i want to go through the motive for sharing mercy
00:02:24 --> 00:02:33 uh receiving hope leads to sharing hope and awakening to a life of sharing hope so here it is in a nutshell
00:02:33 --> 00:02:41 our motive is in a nutshell before we launch into the rest of the today uh god impoverished his son
00:02:41 --> 00:02:54 jesus christ on a cross so that all of his riches and health and righteousness and life could be given
00:02:54 --> 00:03:02 to us those who trust in him that's it in a nutshell 2 corinthians chapter 5 verse 21 in the new testament
00:03:02 --> 00:03:08 reveals this mercy transaction so clearly it says god made him talking about jesus
00:03:08 --> 00:03:18 god made him who had no sin to be sin for us so that in him jesus we might become the righteousness
00:03:18 --> 00:03:27 of god a couple of chapters later in 2 corinthians uh it's stated in pure economic terms for you know
00:03:27 --> 00:03:37 the grace of our lord jesus christ that though he was rich yet for your sakes he became poor so that you
00:03:37 --> 00:03:46 through his poverty might become rich the foundational core element of the christian faith
00:03:46 --> 00:03:54 is that though poor all of humanity were being made rich through the mercy of god we were living in a
00:03:54 --> 00:04:03 rubbish tip we by and by his grace god has clothed us with kingly robes and made us to sit down at his
00:04:03 --> 00:04:13 royal banquet table god's grace has a powerful impact in every part of your life his grace
00:04:13 --> 00:04:23 changes everything a person who knows that they have received mercy while an undeserving enemy of god
00:04:23 --> 00:04:30 will have a heart of love and mercy and compassion for the most ungrateful and the difficult and the
00:04:30 --> 00:04:38 unlovely of society this is in in absolute nutshell when a christian sees
00:04:38 --> 00:04:47 alcoholics prisoners prostitutes drug addicts homeless refugees the broker the destitute of
00:04:47 --> 00:04:50 society of society they know they're looking in a mirror
00:04:50 --> 00:04:58 it is irrelevant if that particular christian has spent their entire life
00:04:58 --> 00:05:01 as a respectable middle class person
00:05:01 --> 00:05:06 they look at the broken and they say in the depths of their hearts
00:05:06 --> 00:05:14 spiritually that's me i i i was that person even if physically and socially i've never been where they
00:05:14 --> 00:05:23 are right now they are in desperate need of mercy and i spiritually was in desperate need of god's mercy to me
00:05:23 --> 00:05:31 god gives mercy to the ungrateful and the wicked and that is what we were
00:05:31 --> 00:05:39 and the powerful effect of his mercy and his grace in us is that we become
00:05:39 --> 00:05:47 like the god of mercy and we show it to others so i want to unpack that that's in a nutshell i want to
00:05:47 --> 00:05:55 unpack that as we launch into matthew 18 if you've got that bible that parable in front of you helps us to show
00:05:55 --> 00:06:00 helps us see how a god's grace to us motivates a life of grace
00:06:00 --> 00:06:09 now just before this in matthew 18 the parable there jesus been talking about how to handle things
00:06:09 --> 00:06:16 when someone sins against you and so peter his apostle asks him a question lord how many times
00:06:16 --> 00:06:20 shall i forgive my brother and sister who sins against me
00:06:20 --> 00:06:24 he says and then he goes and answers his own question up to seven times
00:06:24 --> 00:06:29 now the attitude of the rabbis uh jewish rabbis at that time
00:06:29 --> 00:06:32 was that you would forgive your brother no more than three times
00:06:32 --> 00:06:35 you know three strikes and then you're out
00:06:35 --> 00:06:40 and so peter at this point is probably thinking well i'll go a bit further than that
00:06:40 --> 00:06:45 uh and you know jesus should be pretty happy with that that response
00:06:45 --> 00:06:50 but jesus gives a stunning response in verse 22
00:06:50 --> 00:06:55 i tell you not seven times but 77 times
00:06:55 --> 00:07:04 now some commentators say that he he means literally 77 times others say well actually in fact he meant seven
00:07:04 --> 00:07:11 by 70 times he means 490 times the reality is either either alternative
00:07:11 --> 00:07:13 really misses the point of what jesus says
00:07:13 --> 00:07:21 because to try and calculate 77 or 590 is to go back to the pedantic calculation
00:07:21 --> 00:07:24 of forgiveness and mercy that jesus is rejecting at this point
00:07:24 --> 00:07:28 forgiveness and mercy is unlimited that's his point
00:07:28 --> 00:07:34 that is what god's grace towards us is it is unlimited
00:07:34 --> 00:07:42 and to make the point clear jesus then launches into this parable
00:07:42 --> 00:07:46 there's a man here's a character there's a man who owes a king
00:07:46 --> 00:07:53 10 000 bags of gold it was a debt that according to verse 25 of matthew 18
00:07:53 --> 00:07:59 was not able to be paid now that's an understatement
00:07:59 --> 00:08:05 the original language refers to a debt as 10 000 talents
00:08:05 --> 00:08:10 now the talent was the highest unit of currency
00:08:10 --> 00:08:15 and 10 000 was the highest greek numeral
00:08:15 --> 00:08:23 so the idea here of this is that it's meant to convey the largest sum imaginable
00:08:23 --> 00:08:26 something what we might say it's just like squillions of dollars or something like that
00:08:26 --> 00:08:33 in fact the debt was a thousand times to get this
00:08:33 --> 00:08:35 in the this is first century palestine
00:08:35 --> 00:08:39 this particular debt was a thousand times
00:08:39 --> 00:08:45 the annual revenue of galilee judea samaria and idumea combined
00:08:45 --> 00:08:51 it's like taking all foreign debt globally
00:08:51 --> 00:08:56 and lumping on the responsibility of one human being
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 to pay it back
00:08:57 --> 00:09:01 totally beyond imagination
00:09:01 --> 00:09:04 for those who first heard this
00:09:04 --> 00:09:07 impossible to pay this debt back
00:09:07 --> 00:09:10 and yet
00:09:10 --> 00:09:16 even though this particular character is bankrupt
00:09:16 --> 00:09:19 multiple multiple times over
00:09:19 --> 00:09:24 this particular servant still has a sense of pride
00:09:24 --> 00:09:31 he has not grasped the enormity of his bankruptcy
00:09:31 --> 00:09:34 have a look at what he says in verse 26
00:09:34 --> 00:09:39 at this the servant fell on his knees before him
00:09:39 --> 00:09:42 be patient with me he begged
00:09:42 --> 00:09:44 and i will pay you back everything
00:09:44 --> 00:09:48 so he hadn't quite understood that there was no way he could pay it back
00:09:48 --> 00:09:52 no amount of time no amount of patience on behalf of the king
00:09:52 --> 00:09:55 would ever see this servant paying back this money
00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 he is utterly bankrupt
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 he is powerless
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 he is helpless
00:09:59 --> 00:10:04 no ability whatsoever to trade out of this situation
00:10:04 --> 00:10:08 you see if you go back to luke 10
00:10:08 --> 00:10:10 the other passage was read to us
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 law
00:10:11 --> 00:10:14 an expert of the law comes up to jesus and says
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 so
00:10:15 --> 00:10:17 what does it mean to love my neighbor
00:10:17 --> 00:10:24 and the law expert in the parable of the good samaritan
00:10:24 --> 00:10:27 failed to grasp this concept as well
00:10:27 --> 00:10:33 he the law expert and both these men in this parable
00:10:33 --> 00:10:36 are the man on the road to jericho
00:10:36 --> 00:10:39 beaten helpless destitute
00:10:39 --> 00:10:43 couldn't do a thing to save themselves
00:10:43 --> 00:10:48 and both the law expert in luke 10
00:10:48 --> 00:10:52 the two servants here
00:10:52 --> 00:10:55 all in the same position
00:10:55 --> 00:10:58 in need of mercy
00:10:58 --> 00:11:04 they are as what the rest of the new testament would say
00:11:04 --> 00:11:06 they are dead spiritually
00:11:06 --> 00:11:10 ephesians 2 says of all of humanity
00:11:10 --> 00:11:13 that we are dead in our transgressions and sins
00:11:13 --> 00:11:18 and as we know dead people don't cut deals
00:11:18 --> 00:11:20 they don't pay back loans
00:11:20 --> 00:11:25 and that is the bible's view of our state before god
00:11:25 --> 00:11:28 spiritually dead
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 bankrupt
00:11:29 --> 00:11:31 multiple times over
00:11:31 --> 00:11:34 no amount of trading on our behalf
00:11:34 --> 00:11:36 will ever pay back what we owe god
00:11:36 --> 00:11:40 now of course the king here who
00:11:40 --> 00:11:42 in matthew 18 in this parable
00:11:42 --> 00:11:45 the king who represents god
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 understood the plight of this servant
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 more than the servant did
00:11:47 --> 00:11:50 have a look at verse 27
00:11:50 --> 00:11:53 it says the servant's master took pity on him
00:11:53 --> 00:11:55 cancelled his debt
00:11:55 --> 00:11:57 let him go
00:11:57 --> 00:12:02 see this ultimately this story is about
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 our god
00:12:03 --> 00:12:07 and the way that he graciously treats us
00:12:07 --> 00:12:10 we who are bankrupt
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 before god
00:12:11 --> 00:12:13 with a debt of sin
00:12:13 --> 00:12:15 that we could never be
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 that could never be repaid by us
00:12:16 --> 00:12:19 have been forgiven
00:12:19 --> 00:12:19 a debt
00:12:19 --> 00:12:22 our sin against god
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 has been piling up
00:12:23 --> 00:12:25 load of bad debt
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 hour
00:12:26 --> 00:12:28 after hour
00:12:28 --> 00:12:28 day
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 after day
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 week after week
00:12:30 --> 00:12:32 month after month
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 year after year
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 our entire lives
00:12:34 --> 00:12:36 but god
00:12:36 --> 00:12:38 in his gracious action
00:12:38 --> 00:12:40 in the lord jesus christ
00:12:40 --> 00:12:42 has wiped it clean
00:12:42 --> 00:12:45 wiped it clean
00:12:45 --> 00:12:49 god has forgiven us a debt
00:12:49 --> 00:12:51 that we could never pay back
00:12:51 --> 00:12:55 and the words of this servant
00:12:55 --> 00:12:55 this first servant
00:12:55 --> 00:12:57 be patient with me
00:12:57 --> 00:12:57 and i'll pay you back
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 everything
00:12:58 --> 00:13:01 is so pitifully untrue
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 for us as well
00:13:02 --> 00:13:05 no amount of good activity
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 not even good christian activity
00:13:06 --> 00:13:08 no amount of pulling up our socks
00:13:08 --> 00:13:10 and rolling up our sleeves
00:13:10 --> 00:13:11 trying a little harder
00:13:11 --> 00:13:13 will morally do it
00:13:13 --> 00:13:16 our debt against god
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 is phenomenal
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 we are bankrupt
00:13:18 --> 00:13:21 we don't have the ability
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 the power
00:13:22 --> 00:13:24 to trade out of it
00:13:24 --> 00:13:26 and god
00:13:26 --> 00:13:27 and god comes along
00:13:27 --> 00:13:27 and god comes along
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 in jesus christ
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 and as 2 corinthians 5 says
00:13:29 --> 00:13:31 swap positions with us
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 he's cancelled the debt
00:13:32 --> 00:13:35 he's taken our debt
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 upon himself
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 and he's given us
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 his righteousness
00:13:38 --> 00:13:42 now i'm fully aware
00:13:42 --> 00:13:42 that there are people
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 tuned in this morning
00:13:43 --> 00:13:45 for you right now
00:13:45 --> 00:13:46 this is the first time
00:13:46 --> 00:13:47 you've heard this
00:13:47 --> 00:13:51 can i encourage you
00:13:51 --> 00:13:53 to receive
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 this
00:13:54 --> 00:13:56 god's gracious gift
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 to you in the lord jesus
00:13:57 --> 00:13:58 and have your debt
00:13:58 --> 00:13:59 against god cancelled
00:13:59 --> 00:14:01 if you want to know

00:14:22 --> 00:14:25 receiving hope
00:14:25 --> 00:14:27 leads to sharing hope
00:14:27 --> 00:14:29 and that's the remarkable twist
00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 that comes in this story
00:14:30 --> 00:14:31 in matthew 18
00:14:31 --> 00:14:33 when this servant
00:14:33 --> 00:14:34 who has been forgiven
00:14:34 --> 00:14:37 an incalculable debt
00:14:37 --> 00:14:39 goes out
00:14:39 --> 00:14:40 from that moment
00:14:40 --> 00:14:42 and
00:14:42 --> 00:14:44 just make sure
00:14:44 --> 00:14:46 that another servant
00:14:46 --> 00:14:47 of his
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 who owes him
00:14:48 --> 00:14:50 a few dollars
00:14:50 --> 00:14:52 pays him back
00:14:52 --> 00:14:53 right down
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 to the very last cent
00:14:54 --> 00:14:57 verse 28
00:14:57 --> 00:14:58 have a look at it
00:14:58 --> 00:14:59 it's just ridiculous
00:14:59 --> 00:15:01 but when that servant
00:15:01 --> 00:15:02 went out

00:15:44 --> 00:15:45 six hundred
00:15:45 --> 00:15:46 thousandth
00:15:46 --> 00:15:47 of the first
00:15:47 --> 00:15:48 debt
00:15:48 --> 00:15:49 emphasizes the
00:15:49 --> 00:15:50 ludicrous nature
00:15:50 --> 00:15:52 of the behavior

00:16:05 --> 00:16:06 that this
00:16:06 --> 00:16:07 first servant
00:16:07 --> 00:16:08 shows
00:16:08 --> 00:16:09 is totally
00:16:09 --> 00:16:11 inconceivable
00:16:11 --> 00:16:15 the second servant
00:16:15 --> 00:16:16 pleaded for mercy
00:16:16 --> 00:16:16 he says to me
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 be patient
00:16:17 --> 00:16:17 and I will pay
00:16:17 --> 00:16:18 you back
00:16:18 --> 00:16:18 which is exactly
00:16:18 --> 00:16:19 what the first
00:16:19 --> 00:16:19 servant asked
00:16:19 --> 00:16:22 the difference is
00:16:22 --> 00:16:23 this second servant
00:16:23 --> 00:16:24 could have
00:16:24 --> 00:16:27 but instead
00:16:27 --> 00:16:28 the first servant
00:16:28 --> 00:16:30 had him thrown
00:16:30 --> 00:16:30 into prison
00:16:30 --> 00:16:32 where he would
00:16:32 --> 00:16:32 not be able
00:16:32 --> 00:16:33 to work
00:16:33 --> 00:16:34 and he could
00:16:34 --> 00:16:34 not earn
00:16:34 --> 00:16:34 the money
00:16:34 --> 00:16:35 to pay
00:16:35 --> 00:16:35 the debt
00:16:35 --> 00:16:35 back
00:16:35 --> 00:16:36 and therefore
00:16:36 --> 00:16:36 it will
00:16:36 --> 00:16:37 never be
00:16:37 --> 00:16:37 cancelled
00:16:37 --> 00:16:41 the one
00:16:41 --> 00:16:41 who had
00:16:41 --> 00:16:42 been shown
00:16:42 --> 00:16:43 mercy
00:16:43 --> 00:16:45 refused
00:16:45 --> 00:16:46 to show
00:16:46 --> 00:16:47 mercy
00:16:47 --> 00:16:50 it is an
00:16:50 --> 00:16:51 unthinkable
00:16:51 --> 00:16:52 response
00:16:52 --> 00:16:55 to God's
00:16:55 --> 00:16:56 mercy to us
00:16:56 --> 00:16:56 in Jesus
00:16:56 --> 00:17:00 and yet
00:17:00 --> 00:17:03 that's the way
00:17:03 --> 00:17:04 a person
00:17:04 --> 00:17:04 talks
00:17:04 --> 00:17:05 whose
00:17:05 --> 00:17:06 Christianity
00:17:06 --> 00:17:07 is simply
00:17:07 --> 00:17:07 a group
00:17:07 --> 00:17:08 of ideas
00:17:08 --> 00:17:09 and it's
00:17:09 --> 00:17:10 not an
00:17:10 --> 00:17:10 experience
00:17:10 --> 00:17:11 of precious
00:17:11 --> 00:17:11 mercy
00:17:11 --> 00:17:12 of God
00:17:12 --> 00:17:13 in the Lord
00:17:13 --> 00:17:14 Jesus Christ
00:17:14 --> 00:17:15 it's a person
00:17:15 --> 00:17:16 whose Christianity
00:17:16 --> 00:17:17 is all truth
00:17:17 --> 00:17:18 no treasure
00:17:18 --> 00:17:21 all choices
00:17:21 --> 00:17:22 no cherishing
00:17:22 --> 00:17:24 all logic
00:17:24 --> 00:17:25 about Christ
00:17:25 --> 00:17:26 and no love
00:17:26 --> 00:17:27 for Christ
00:17:27 --> 00:17:28 all decision
00:17:28 --> 00:17:30 and no delight
00:17:30 --> 00:17:33 and we see it
00:17:33 --> 00:17:34 in Matthew 18
00:17:34 --> 00:17:35 let's keep reading

00:17:36 --> 00:17:37 then the master
00:17:37 --> 00:17:38 called the servant
00:17:38 --> 00:17:38 in
00:17:38 --> 00:17:40 this is the king
00:17:40 --> 00:17:41 calling in the first
00:17:41 --> 00:17:41 servant
00:17:41 --> 00:17:43 you wicked
00:17:43 --> 00:17:44 servant
00:17:44 --> 00:17:46 I cancelled
00:17:46 --> 00:17:47 all that debt
00:17:47 --> 00:17:48 of yours
00:17:48 --> 00:17:49 because you
00:17:49 --> 00:17:50 begged me
00:17:50 --> 00:17:50 to
00:17:50 --> 00:17:52 shouldn't you
00:17:52 --> 00:17:53 have had mercy
00:17:53 --> 00:17:53 on your fellow
00:17:53 --> 00:17:54 servant
00:17:54 --> 00:17:54 just as I had

00:17:55 --> 00:17:57 and in anger
00:17:57 --> 00:17:58 his master
00:17:58 --> 00:17:58 handed him over
00:17:58 --> 00:17:59 to the jailers
