00:00:16 --> 00:00:24 we might intend to have hope in you but we need your help and so we need your help not just to
00:00:24 --> 00:00:31 put our trust in you but to keep looking forward to your promises that you have things that you
00:00:31 --> 00:00:37 promised to fulfill in the future for us and so lord as we get a glimpse of that now we pray that
00:00:37 --> 00:00:44 our hearts might be enlarged for your purpose in this world and we ask it for your glory now amen
00:00:44 --> 00:00:54 hasib hussein was the 18 year old suicide bomber responsible for blowing up a bus
00:00:54 --> 00:01:02 number 30 in london on the 7th of july 2005 which killed 13 people one article
00:01:02 --> 00:01:11 in london's the guardian newspaper was titled the bomber aimless youth with poor future
00:01:11 --> 00:01:20 it suggested that hasib hussein's horizon stretched no further than his immediate impoverished
00:01:20 --> 00:01:28 neighborhood that he grew up in the opposite was actually true hasib hussein killed himself and
00:01:28 --> 00:01:35 13 other people because his horizon stretched much further than that and in fact of what he saw
00:01:35 --> 00:01:44 as eternity he believed on that day almost 10 years ago now he was carrying out the will of Allah
00:01:44 --> 00:01:54 he did not call what he was doing suicide because that is a sin to muslims but shahada or martyrdom
00:01:54 --> 00:02:05 he didn't actually believe he would die he believed he would transfer immediately into paradise to receive
00:02:05 --> 00:02:12 his reward and for a male muslim martyr that reward is 72 virgins
00:02:12 --> 00:02:20 if you're a female muslim martyr the reward is you get your husband for eternity
00:02:20 --> 00:02:27 which makes you question why there are female muslim martyrs
00:02:27 --> 00:02:33 apparently if you've had multiple husbands you can choose the best one
00:02:33 --> 00:02:40 to be with for all of eternity but anyway in response to the bombings
00:02:40 --> 00:02:46 the muslim council of britain were bringing in world-renowned islamic scholars
00:02:46 --> 00:02:53 to instruct their people that those who commit such atrocities were in fact going to hell not to heaven
00:02:53 --> 00:03:01 they declared it was a message that needed to be said in clear and direct language
00:03:01 --> 00:03:08 and if there is anyone who uses clear and direct language about heaven and hell it's what we've seen
00:03:08 --> 00:03:12 in the prophet ezekiel but how can he be trusted
00:03:12 --> 00:03:22 how can we know who speaks for god the creator of the world who can be trusted in this present climate
00:03:22 --> 00:03:30 that we live in well in isaiah 41 22 we're given a test for discerning who speaks for god
00:03:30 --> 00:03:38 it says this bring in your idols to tell us what is going to happen tell us what the former things were
00:03:38 --> 00:03:45 so that we may consider them and how their final outcome came to be or declare to us the things to come
00:03:45 --> 00:03:51 tell us what the future holds so we may know that you are gods in other words
00:03:51 --> 00:03:54 look for prophecy that's fulfilled
00:03:54 --> 00:03:58 that will tell you who you can trust
00:03:58 --> 00:04:02 the one who tells you what the future is
00:04:02 --> 00:04:07 and then has the the the power to control it to bring it about
00:04:07 --> 00:04:11 is the one who can be trusted and as we've seen here in ezekiel
00:04:11 --> 00:04:18 for the last three weeks is that that is god himself he tells us what is going to happen and
00:04:18 --> 00:04:26 then he makes it happen we've seen so far in ezekiel uh was that he was right about the future
00:04:26 --> 00:04:33 this prophecy opened with ezekiel amongst the exiles languishing down uh by the kibar river in
00:04:33 --> 00:04:40 babylon and despite that back in jerusalem some of the prominent citizens and prophets were saying
00:04:40 --> 00:04:45 that don't worry about that all is well don't need to be too concerned the city and the temple
00:04:45 --> 00:04:50 still stood and it's just a matter of time before god's going to come back and put everything right
00:04:50 --> 00:04:58 again there's nothing to worry about and we have seen that what ezekiel does is he dashes their hopes
00:04:58 --> 00:05:05 in chapter 4 ezekiel pitches the siege of jerusalem in chapter 10 he sees god's glory leaving the temple
00:05:05 --> 00:05:11 in chapter 12 he betrays the exile and he fiercely proclaims why it's all happening
00:05:11 --> 00:05:14 why has god abandoned his people
00:05:14 --> 00:05:24 jimmy baker was a american tele-evangelist who went to prison for corruption in 1989
00:05:24 --> 00:05:31 while in prison he was asked by an interviewer when did you stop loving jesus
00:05:31 --> 00:05:39 and he replied i never stopped loving jesus and the interviewer replied but what about the extortion
00:05:39 --> 00:05:45 and the corruption and the adultery and the bribery and baker explained i never stopped loving jesus
00:05:45 --> 00:05:53 but i did stop fearing him and that's the problem with god's people in ezekiel's time
00:05:53 --> 00:05:59 there is no fear of the lord the bible says god says to his people be sure your sins will find you out
00:05:59 --> 00:06:04 and they just ignored that they don't believe it they ignored god's word there was no fear of the lord
00:06:04 --> 00:06:11 there was no shame for their sin they had domesticated god they thought that god would just accept them
00:06:11 --> 00:06:15 the way they were and be grateful for any little bits of worship that they might throw in his direction
00:06:15 --> 00:06:22 they thought that god would tolerate them and even affirm their lifestyles because he is a god of love
00:06:22 --> 00:06:29 and god graciously warned them again and again and to stop stop it because if they didn't there would be
00:06:29 --> 00:06:33 consequences and they would be devastating
00:06:33 --> 00:06:40 and he warns his people through his prophet ezekiel and what god predicts about the future
00:06:40 --> 00:06:51 he always gets right and so in 587 bc jerusalem and the temple are destroyed their presumption on god
00:06:51 --> 00:06:59 meant that their protector had in fact become their enemy they used to sing psalms like 40 psalm 46
00:06:59 --> 00:07:07 god is our refuge and strength our ever-present helping trouble and now they would sing psalm 137
00:07:07 --> 00:07:17 by the rivers of babylon we sat and we wept when we remembered zion they wept in babylon as they
00:07:17 --> 00:07:24 looked back and saw the temple destroyed but as we've seen ezekiel's message doesn't stop there
00:07:24 --> 00:07:32 in his great love god is determined to bring life to the dead he's determined to bring hope to the
00:07:32 --> 00:07:40 hopeless we saw last week chapters 33 through to 30 39 contain some wonderful promises of salvation
00:07:40 --> 00:07:48 god is going to come and reign through his great king the good shepherd in ezekiel 34 and when he comes
00:07:48 --> 00:07:55 he's going to put everything right he will raise the dead so judgment isn't simply the end of the world
00:07:55 --> 00:07:59 it actually marks the beginning of a new perfect world order
00:07:59 --> 00:08:04 and so in these last nine chapters of this book
00:08:04 --> 00:08:12 ezekiel describes the vision of that new perfect world order and that's what we're going to see here right now
00:08:12 --> 00:08:18 if only hasib hasain could have seen the future in this way
00:08:18 --> 00:08:27 he believed something about the future and it had enormous implications for how he lived and he died in
00:08:27 --> 00:08:35 the present and that is the vital issue that's before us here in these nine chapters what does the future
00:08:35 --> 00:08:44 hold and how do we live in view of that future there are two key elements that i think dominate so we're
00:08:44 --> 00:08:51 going to look at two things in nine chapters two key elements that dominate our focus in these chapters
00:08:51 --> 00:09:00 firstly god's presence secondly our abundant life that's what we're going to look at so chapter 40 verse 1
00:09:00 --> 00:09:07 open up your bibles we're going to begin there it tells us it's 20 years since god showed up in the
00:09:07 --> 00:09:16 kibar river it's 25 years since the first deportation into exile it's 14 years therefore since the temple
00:09:16 --> 00:09:24 is destroyed in jerusalem and in chapter 40 verse 2 in other words that's a long time for ezekiel to be
00:09:24 --> 00:09:33 waiting for hope in chapter 40 verse 2 ezekiel is taken back via revision for another tour of jerusalem
00:09:33 --> 00:09:40 this is the second tour of jerusalem in visions of god he took me to the land of israel and set me on a
00:09:40 --> 00:09:49 very high mountain on whose south side were some buildings that looked like a city what ezekiel gets
00:09:49 --> 00:09:57 here is picture language for something that is great and wonderful and majestic and glorious and spectacular
00:09:57 --> 00:10:06 these chapters speak of a perfect world when god comes to rescue his people ezekiel sees here is something
00:10:06 --> 00:10:13 of the picture of revelation 21 22 bit of which sam just read out a moment ago where it says then i saw
00:10:13 --> 00:10:18 a new heaven and a new earth for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away
00:10:18 --> 00:10:25 that that's that's what ezekiel got a glimpse of here revelation 21 a place where there is no more
00:10:25 --> 00:10:32 death and pain no more coffins and hospitals no need for endless boxes of tissues ezekiel sees here a
00:10:32 --> 00:10:40 glorious future his heart must have left because he knew the pain of being a captive in babylon for 25
00:10:40 --> 00:10:47 years he knew the pain and the anguish of losing his wife the delight of his eyes as chapter 24
00:10:47 --> 00:10:56 refers to his wife what ezekiel sees here on this tour is a new temple a magnificent temple chapters 40 to 42
00:10:56 --> 00:11:04 go into great detail about the size and the furnishings of the temple it's like the grand old temple of
00:11:04 --> 00:11:11 jerusalem but only better more perfect if it's possible there is an emphasis here in these chapters
00:11:11 --> 00:11:19 on things like the thickness of the walls because this temple is built to last it will not be destroyed
00:11:19 --> 00:11:31 again and then in chapter 43 the climax of the tour comes reading from verse 1 then the man brought me to
00:11:31 --> 00:11:40 the gate facing east and i saw the glory of the god of israel coming from the east in chapter 10
00:11:40 --> 00:11:48 ezekiel had seen the glory of god depart towards the east and now the glory comes from the east his voice
00:11:48 --> 00:11:55 was like the roar of rushing waters and the land was radiant in his glory in his glory the vision i saw
00:11:55 --> 00:12:01 was like the vision i had seen when i came to destroy the city sorry when he came to destroy the city and
00:12:01 --> 00:12:08 like the vision i had seen by the kibar river and i fell face down the glory of the lord entered the
00:12:08 --> 00:12:15 temple through the gate facing east and then the spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court
00:12:15 --> 00:12:21 and the glory of the lord filled the temple then down into verse 7 we see some really good news here
00:12:21 --> 00:12:29 he said son of man this is the place of my throne and the place for the souls of my feet
00:12:29 --> 00:12:34 this is where i will live among the israelites forever
00:12:34 --> 00:12:44 what what ezekiel gets here is a profound vision of hope for the future
00:12:44 --> 00:12:51 ezekiel saw the glory of god at the kibar river he saw the glory of god depart from the temple just
00:12:51 --> 00:12:58 before it was handed over for destruction and now he sees it again as the departure of god
00:12:58 --> 00:13:04 is is reversed god has returned god is now back with his people forever
00:13:04 --> 00:13:16 and as we know from the bible right from the very beginning that is how god the creator god designed
00:13:16 --> 00:13:24 his world he designed it with him in the middle as the creator and for it to revolve around him he is
00:13:24 --> 00:13:30 the king at the center of everything that's the world's design but as we know adam and eve
00:13:30 --> 00:13:36 although he gave them breath and he gave them the garden and he gave them each other he gave them
00:13:36 --> 00:13:43 perfection they didn't like god being at the center they wanted to be at the center they deposed god
00:13:43 --> 00:13:51 and the result since then has been catastrophic for the world in which we live it has been a domino effect
00:13:51 --> 00:13:58 right throughout the whole creation in genesis 3 we see that the whole universe is cursed
00:13:58 --> 00:14:06 because we push god out from the center everything from marriage to farming has been impacted by sin
00:14:06 --> 00:14:15 and as adam and eve are banished from the presence of god it seems like it's all over
00:14:15 --> 00:14:23 but god doesn't give up on humanity he called the people of israel to himself they were his people
00:14:23 --> 00:14:29 he was their god he established on earth what was in many ways a new eden he lived amongst them and dwelt
00:14:29 --> 00:14:35 with them and blessed them through the temple and as they submitted to his loving kingship they would be blessed
00:14:35 --> 00:14:43 but they kept repeating the sin of adam and eve of pushing god away from the center
00:14:43 --> 00:14:51 they rejected his rule and as a result he left them he banished them to exile
00:14:51 --> 00:14:56 and there they were by the rivers of babylon weeping
00:14:56 --> 00:14:58 weeping
00:14:58 --> 00:15:02 it could have been the end
00:15:02 --> 00:15:10 but what ezekiel saw in his vision confirmed to him that it wasn't the end
00:15:10 --> 00:15:17 god would return everything of the new jerusalem that he sees this new creation
00:15:17 --> 00:15:22 would once again revolve around god
00:15:22 --> 00:15:24 he would again be the center
00:15:24 --> 00:15:29 that is the point that is being made in these chapters
00:15:29 --> 00:15:33 everything revolves around god
00:15:33 --> 00:15:36 ezekiel ends as we know we said this right from the very beginning
00:15:36 --> 00:15:41 with these words and the name of the city that is the city that ezekiel saw
00:15:41 --> 00:15:45 from that time on will be the lord is there
00:15:45 --> 00:15:48 that is the summary of the whole book
00:15:48 --> 00:15:52 god is there at the very center of his glorious world
00:15:52 --> 00:16:03 what impact is this vision that ezekiel gets here in these first few chapters
00:16:03 --> 00:16:06 the first few chapters from verse 40 onwards
00:16:06 --> 00:16:10 have of god's people what sort of impact do you think it was meant to have on them
00:16:10 --> 00:16:12 what effect is it meant to have on us
00:16:12 --> 00:16:17 there is something very striking in chapter 43 verse 10
00:16:17 --> 00:16:21 as ezekiel gets this tour of the temple
00:16:21 --> 00:16:24 it's not the impact you would immediately think of
00:16:24 --> 00:16:26 son of man
00:16:26 --> 00:16:29 describe the temple to the people of israel
00:16:29 --> 00:16:33 that they may be ashamed of their sin
00:16:33 --> 00:16:38 the temple that ezekiel sees here
00:16:38 --> 00:16:40 with its perfect symmetry
00:16:40 --> 00:16:42 stands for god's perfect holiness
00:16:42 --> 00:16:46 and in the light of god's holiness
00:16:46 --> 00:16:51 the sin of the people in all its awfulness
00:16:51 --> 00:16:53 is meant to be exposed
00:16:53 --> 00:16:56 chapter 43 verse 10
00:16:56 --> 00:16:57 is there
00:16:57 --> 00:17:00 so that the listeners of this prophecy
00:17:00 --> 00:17:01 would feel shame
00:17:01 --> 00:17:04 as they contemplate their own imperfection
00:17:04 --> 00:17:05 and failure
00:17:05 --> 00:17:08 alongside this vision of perfection
00:17:08 --> 00:17:12 we make no spiritual progress
00:17:12 --> 00:17:14 until we look within
00:17:14 --> 00:17:15 and we look at god
00:17:15 --> 00:17:17 and we see his holiness
00:17:17 --> 00:17:20 and we start to take responsibility
00:17:20 --> 00:17:21 for our moral failure
00:17:21 --> 00:17:24 when we start to say
00:17:24 --> 00:17:26 i have not lived
00:17:26 --> 00:17:28 with god as god
00:17:28 --> 00:17:30 i have not lived
00:17:30 --> 00:17:32 with god as the centre
00:17:32 --> 00:17:38 this sense of sin
00:17:38 --> 00:17:38 and shame
00:17:38 --> 00:17:40 that the exiles were meant to feel
00:17:40 --> 00:17:42 as they stood before
00:17:42 --> 00:17:45 this vision of the new perfect temple
00:17:45 --> 00:17:47 is what we are meant
00:17:47 --> 00:17:49 to come into
00:17:49 --> 00:17:50 this sense of sin and shame
00:17:50 --> 00:17:53 is meant to be the sharp focus for us
00:17:53 --> 00:17:56 as we stand before jesus
00:17:56 --> 00:18:00 who in john chapter 2 verse 18
00:18:00 --> 00:18:03 having cleared the temple in jerusalem
00:18:03 --> 00:18:05 the new rebuilt temple in jerusalem
00:18:05 --> 00:18:08 proclaims that he in fact
00:18:08 --> 00:18:10 is the temple
00:18:10 --> 00:18:13 in john chapter 2
00:18:13 --> 00:18:15 it is jesus's body
00:18:15 --> 00:18:17 which is destroyed
00:18:17 --> 00:18:18 and raised again
00:18:18 --> 00:18:19 in three days
00:18:19 --> 00:18:21 and that body
00:18:21 --> 00:18:22 was the temple of god
00:18:22 --> 00:18:25 jesus is the focal point
00:18:25 --> 00:18:27 of god's presence
00:18:27 --> 00:18:28 amongst his people
00:18:28 --> 00:18:30 that is jesus is the key
00:18:30 --> 00:18:32 and all these promises
00:18:32 --> 00:18:33 about the presence of god
00:18:33 --> 00:18:35 and these promises for the future
00:18:35 --> 00:18:36 are fulfilled
00:18:36 --> 00:18:37 in him
00:18:37 --> 00:18:40 that is by his death
00:18:40 --> 00:18:41 and resurrection
00:18:41 --> 00:18:42 he makes it possible
00:18:42 --> 00:18:43 for us to enter
00:18:43 --> 00:18:45 into the presence
00:18:45 --> 00:18:46 of god
00:18:46 --> 00:18:47 and those
00:18:47 --> 00:18:49 who come to jesus
00:18:49 --> 00:18:50 are promised
00:18:50 --> 00:18:51 in john chapter 10
00:18:51 --> 00:18:53 abundant life
00:18:53 --> 00:18:55 and that's the second thing
00:18:55 --> 00:18:56 that we see
00:18:56 --> 00:18:57 as we move
00:18:57 --> 00:18:58 into the latter chapters
00:18:58 --> 00:18:59 of ezekiel
00:18:59 --> 00:19:01 you see
00:19:01 --> 00:19:02 once the king
00:19:02 --> 00:19:04 is at the centre
00:19:04 --> 00:19:07 everything changes
00:19:07 --> 00:19:12 everything falls
00:19:12 --> 00:19:13 into place
00:19:13 --> 00:19:16 in chapters 43
00:19:16 --> 00:19:17 to 46
00:19:17 --> 00:19:18 there has been
00:19:18 --> 00:19:19 a break
00:19:19 --> 00:19:20 in this tour
00:19:20 --> 00:19:22 of jerusalem
00:19:22 --> 00:19:23 that ezekiel's given
00:19:23 --> 00:19:24 as he's given
00:19:24 --> 00:19:25 regulations
00:19:25 --> 00:19:26 for worship
00:19:26 --> 00:19:27 in the new temple
00:19:27 --> 00:19:28 and the tour
00:19:28 --> 00:19:29 begins again
00:19:29 --> 00:19:31 in chapter 47
00:19:31 --> 00:19:32 verse 1
00:19:32 --> 00:19:34 the man brought me
00:19:34 --> 00:19:35 back to the entrance
00:19:35 --> 00:19:36 of the temple
00:19:36 --> 00:19:37 and i saw
00:19:37 --> 00:19:38 water coming
00:19:38 --> 00:19:39 out
00:19:39 --> 00:19:40 from under
00:19:40 --> 00:19:41 the threshold
00:19:41 --> 00:19:42 of the temple
00:19:42 --> 00:19:46 here is a stream
00:19:46 --> 00:19:47 that flows
00:19:47 --> 00:19:48 out from the presence
00:19:48 --> 00:19:48 of god
00:19:48 --> 00:19:49 in the temple
00:19:49 --> 00:19:50 out
00:19:50 --> 00:19:52 and ezekiel
00:19:52 --> 00:19:53 and his guide
00:19:53 --> 00:19:54 take a bit of a
00:19:54 --> 00:19:55 wander along
00:19:55 --> 00:19:55 the river bank
00:19:55 --> 00:19:56 for about
00:19:56 --> 00:19:56 one and a half
00:19:56 --> 00:19:57 kilometres
00:19:57 --> 00:19:59 and verse 3
00:19:59 --> 00:20:00 after walking
00:20:00 --> 00:20:01 about half a
00:20:01 --> 00:20:01 kilometre
00:20:01 --> 00:20:02 they check
00:20:02 --> 00:20:02 the depth
00:20:02 --> 00:20:03 of the water
00:20:03 --> 00:20:03 and it's
00:20:03 --> 00:20:04 ankle deep
00:20:04 --> 00:20:05 then in verse 4

00:20:08 --> 00:20:09 again
00:20:09 --> 00:20:10 and it's waist deep
00:20:10 --> 00:20:11 and the same distance
00:20:11 --> 00:20:12 again in verse 5
00:20:12 --> 00:20:13 it says
00:20:13 --> 00:20:14 it was now a river
00:20:14 --> 00:20:16 that i could not cross
00:20:16 --> 00:20:17 deep enough
00:20:17 --> 00:20:18 to swim in
00:20:18 --> 00:20:20 and as it flows out
00:20:20 --> 00:20:20 this river gets
00:20:20 --> 00:20:21 deeper and deeper
00:20:21 --> 00:20:22 without any
00:20:22 --> 00:20:23 tributaries
00:20:23 --> 00:20:24 running off
00:20:24 --> 00:20:24 in any other
00:20:24 --> 00:20:25 directions
00:20:25 --> 00:20:26 and notice what
00:20:26 --> 00:20:26 happens in the next
00:20:26 --> 00:20:27 paragraph
00:20:27 --> 00:20:28 the end of verse 6
00:20:28 --> 00:20:30 then he led me back
00:20:30 --> 00:20:31 to the bank of the river

00:20:47 --> 00:20:48 that's known to us
00:20:48 --> 00:20:50 as the dead sea
00:20:50 --> 00:20:50 you know
00:20:50 --> 00:20:51 the sea that's
00:20:51 --> 00:20:52 full of salt
00:20:52 --> 00:20:54 and
00:20:54 --> 00:20:55 this is the surprising
00:20:55 --> 00:20:55 thing
00:20:55 --> 00:20:56 the next
00:20:56 --> 00:20:56 the next bit
00:20:56 --> 00:20:57 when it empsies
00:20:57 --> 00:20:59 into the sea
00:20:59 --> 00:21:00 the water there
00:21:00 --> 00:21:01 becomes
00:21:01 --> 00:21:02 fresh
00:21:02 --> 00:21:05 swarms of living
00:21:05 --> 00:21:07 creatures will live
00:21:07 --> 00:21:08 wherever
00:21:08 --> 00:21:09 the river flows
00:21:09 --> 00:21:10 the river
00:21:10 --> 00:21:11 makes
00:21:11 --> 00:21:12 the salty
00:21:12 --> 00:21:13 water
00:21:13 --> 00:21:14 fresh
00:21:14 --> 00:21:15 swarms
00:21:15 --> 00:21:15 of living
00:21:15 --> 00:21:16 creatures
00:21:16 --> 00:21:17 are the result
00:21:17 --> 00:21:18 where this
00:21:18 --> 00:21:19 in other words
00:21:19 --> 00:21:20 wherever this
00:21:20 --> 00:21:21 river flows
00:21:21 --> 00:21:23 everything
00:21:23 --> 00:21:24 thrives
00:21:24 --> 00:21:25 the dead
00:21:25 --> 00:21:26 is given
