00:00:06 --> 00:00:09 and it was just great to see you so relaxed and casual up the front.
00:00:09 --> 00:00:11 So I'm going to do that again tonight.
00:00:11 --> 00:00:11 Just bear with me for a moment.
00:00:15 --> 00:00:16 OK, ready to go.
00:00:17 --> 00:00:22 So I think 12 months ago,
00:00:23 --> 00:00:24 we sat in this room,
00:00:25 --> 00:00:27 and we had this in front of us,
00:00:27 --> 00:00:30 Heartbeat, November the 8th,
00:00:30 --> 00:00:34 and it was our picture for what was ahead,
00:00:34 --> 00:00:35 it was the input, in fact,
00:00:35 --> 00:00:38 the entire input of what I gave and talked about.
00:00:38 --> 00:00:42 It was in the beginning of our series on radical,
00:00:42 --> 00:00:45 what it meant to be a radical disciple of the Lord Jesus
00:00:45 --> 00:00:48 and the radical choices that we need to make as a church.
00:00:49 --> 00:00:53 And one of the questions that Stuart Wendy put in front of me
00:00:53 --> 00:00:57 as we were doing the preparation leading up to this
00:00:57 --> 00:01:01 is it would be good to highlight some of the markers,
00:01:01 --> 00:01:04 the changes, the progress we've made in the last 12 months.
00:01:04 --> 00:01:06 Because if you were here 12 months ago,
00:01:06 --> 00:01:09 you would know that this was a time of an element of uncertainty.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:13 We picked radical because of a chance for us to really,
00:01:13 --> 00:01:16 we needed to really focus on what we're doing as a church.
00:01:16 --> 00:01:19 We just found out that Sam Lowe,
00:01:19 --> 00:01:21 one of our ministers here,
00:01:22 --> 00:01:24 was leaving after eight years of ministry,
00:01:25 --> 00:01:27 and it was a time of change and flux for us
00:01:27 --> 00:01:28 and what it meant.
00:01:28 --> 00:01:30 And so I think there's a lot,
00:01:31 --> 00:01:32 when I look back at the last 12 months,
00:01:32 --> 00:01:34 there is so many things to celebrate,
00:01:34 --> 00:01:35 where 12 months ago,
00:01:35 --> 00:01:37 I might have been feeling a little bit uncertain
00:01:37 --> 00:01:39 about where we were or where I was
00:01:39 --> 00:01:40 and how we're going to move forward.
00:01:41 --> 00:01:44 God has just kept pushing us forward
00:01:44 --> 00:01:47 and been building momentum throughout the course this year.
00:01:47 --> 00:01:48 And yet at the same time,
00:01:48 --> 00:01:50 in many ways, it's been a hard year.
00:01:51 --> 00:01:52 I feel it.
00:01:52 --> 00:01:54 I feel like it's been a hard year.
00:01:54 --> 00:01:55 There's been a number of things which have happened,
00:01:55 --> 00:01:57 which I didn't want to happen.
00:01:57 --> 00:01:59 And yet what God does,
00:01:59 --> 00:02:01 he just uses those times to continue to sharpen us.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:03 And so we, as I said,
00:02:03 --> 00:02:05 back in November the 8th last year,
00:02:05 --> 00:02:07 where plan was to move to two congregations,
00:02:07 --> 00:02:08 we've done that.
00:02:09 --> 00:02:11 And our translation team,
00:02:11 --> 00:02:14 which was like two or three people,
00:02:14 --> 00:02:15 has grown to,
00:02:15 --> 00:02:17 we celebrated last time around 14 people,
00:02:17 --> 00:02:18 something like that.
00:02:18 --> 00:02:21 And can I just put out a bit of a thanks here tonight
00:02:21 --> 00:02:22 for Flora and Dorothy,
00:02:23 --> 00:02:28 who have just taken the My Purpose Checkup document
00:02:28 --> 00:02:30 and totally translated the thing
00:02:30 --> 00:02:31 in the last week or two
00:02:31 --> 00:02:33 or in that timeframe.
00:02:33 --> 00:02:35 They just got onto it.
00:02:35 --> 00:02:40 And under their own initiative,
00:02:40 --> 00:02:43 and I just want to say that is superb.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:44 That's a massive amount of work.
00:02:45 --> 00:02:46 So thank you for that.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:49 So we've seen that change.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:55 We saw miraculously with the provision
00:02:55 --> 00:02:59 of the money we raised on Vision Sunday,
00:02:59 --> 00:03:02 as well as the increase we saw in our pledging.
00:03:03 --> 00:03:03 The Barnets,
00:03:04 --> 00:03:05 which we were not expecting to be able to do this,
00:03:05 --> 00:03:08 but Barnets came on full time just after Easter.
00:03:09 --> 00:03:11 And so we were intending on employing a children's pastor.
00:03:11 --> 00:03:13 And we've not just got a children's pastor,
00:03:13 --> 00:03:14 we've got a children's pastor
00:03:14 --> 00:03:16 and a maturity pastor wrapped up into one.
00:03:16 --> 00:03:17 And so that's worth celebrating.
00:03:18 --> 00:03:19 We've just celebrated boom.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:21 That didn't exist 12 months ago.
00:03:21 --> 00:03:23 And one of the things of bringing a children's pastor in
00:03:23 --> 00:03:27 was in fact to start an after school kids ministry
00:03:27 --> 00:03:28 that has now started.
00:03:28 --> 00:03:32 And I think James has done a phenomenal job in that
00:03:32 --> 00:03:35 by building the team first.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:38 But he spent a lot of time preparing the team,
00:03:38 --> 00:03:39 building for it.
00:03:39 --> 00:03:41 And so I'm just so excited about that.
00:03:41 --> 00:03:44 We were looking to employ Takeshi and John.
00:03:44 --> 00:03:46 And frankly, you can say boom all you like,
00:03:46 --> 00:03:48 but no one can say it like Takeshi.
00:03:49 --> 00:03:51 And he ought to be,
00:03:52 --> 00:03:53 he's not here, is he?
00:03:54 --> 00:03:55 He's studying for exams.
00:03:55 --> 00:03:57 I'm assuming he shouldn't have been here.
00:03:57 --> 00:04:01 But yeah, so we've been able to employ these guys
00:04:01 --> 00:04:03 and they've done a fantastic job
00:04:03 --> 00:04:06 and helped in a big way in the transition
00:04:06 --> 00:04:07 from three congregations to two
00:04:07 --> 00:04:10 and turning us more transcultural.
00:04:11 --> 00:04:14 We got a faculty approved to move furniture.
00:04:15 --> 00:04:16 That went through.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:19 10 years ago, that would have been a bun fight.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:21 Now it's not.
00:04:21 --> 00:04:24 Now it's actually a move forward
00:04:24 --> 00:04:27 forward because we wanted to see more and more people
00:04:27 --> 00:04:30 seated in this building here in the gospel.
00:04:30 --> 00:04:34 So while we haven't broken the 200 barrier,
00:04:34 --> 00:04:36 which we talked a lot about this time last year.
00:04:37 --> 00:04:39 In fact, the goal for that was to do it between,
00:04:40 --> 00:04:42 you know, 2018 and the end of 2020.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:47 2020, we have building momentum in that direction.
00:04:47 --> 00:04:48 And it's fabulous.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:55 So we're now almost halfway through our vision series for this year.
00:04:55 --> 00:04:59 As you know, our theme is His Purpose, Our Purpose, My Purpose.
00:04:59 --> 00:05:04 And I was asked a really good question
00:05:04 --> 00:05:07 about a week or so ago, a couple of weeks ago.
00:05:08 --> 00:05:10 And the question was,
00:05:10 --> 00:05:12 why this, why now?
00:05:13 --> 00:05:15 Why this, why now?
00:05:15 --> 00:05:17 Why His Purpose, Our Purpose, My Purpose?
00:05:17 --> 00:05:18 Why this and why now?
00:05:18 --> 00:05:19 And my answer is,
00:05:20 --> 00:05:23 because it's all about breaking the 200 barrier.
00:05:23 --> 00:05:24 That's why we're doing it now.
00:05:26 --> 00:05:28 In case you're new to this,
00:05:28 --> 00:05:30 the 200 barrier is, if you like,
00:05:31 --> 00:05:36 a cultural barrier that the vast majority of churches face.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:38 Very few, in fact,
00:05:39 --> 00:05:42 something like only 10% of churches
00:05:42 --> 00:05:46 will ever break the cultural barrier of 200 members.
00:05:47 --> 00:05:50 I introduced it to us at Heartbeat last year
00:05:50 --> 00:05:54 and set the goal that we'd break it before the end of 2020.
00:05:54 --> 00:05:58 The 200 barrier is where a church,
00:05:59 --> 00:06:04 either deliberately or just by the fact of inertia,
00:06:05 --> 00:06:08 decides, subconsciously or consciously,
00:06:09 --> 00:06:12 to stick below 200 members
00:06:12 --> 00:06:15 because it's the way they like things to be.
00:06:15 --> 00:06:17 And I said,
00:06:17 --> 00:06:20 God may choose to never grow St. Paul's,
00:06:20 --> 00:06:25 but for us to deliberately limit the size of the members of St. Paul's,
00:06:25 --> 00:06:29 I find that morally, spiritually reprehensible.
00:06:30 --> 00:06:33 We've got to do everything that we can to grow God's kingdom.
00:06:33 --> 00:06:38 And so one of the key aspects of breaking the 200 barrier
00:06:38 --> 00:06:40 was the need to align the church
00:06:40 --> 00:06:44 around the mission, vision, values and strategy of the church.
00:06:44 --> 00:06:48 That's one of the key elements of breaking the 200 barrier.
00:06:48 --> 00:06:50 And there's at least about eight of them,
00:06:50 --> 00:06:51 but this is one of the key ones.
00:06:52 --> 00:06:57 Alignment is about all ministry pulling in the same direction.
00:06:57 --> 00:07:01 What happens when every ministry pulls in the same direction
00:07:01 --> 00:07:05 is that it forces out the personal agendas
00:07:05 --> 00:07:07 and the personal preferences
00:07:07 --> 00:07:11 that abound in churches that prefer to stay small.
00:07:12 --> 00:07:18 And it causes us to focus on God's mission.
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 That's what it does.
00:07:20 --> 00:07:22 And so that's what this vision series is about.
00:07:22 --> 00:07:23 It's about alignment.
00:07:25 --> 00:07:30 It's about giving us clarity on our purpose,
00:07:31 --> 00:07:34 on how St. Paul's, in fact, not just St. Paul's purpose,
00:07:35 --> 00:07:37 but how St. Paul's, in fact, structures itself,
00:07:38 --> 00:07:42 how we balance and how we resource these five purposes.
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 The ministry one's hiding behind me here
00:07:44 --> 00:07:46 because ministry is what we're doing tonight.
00:07:47 --> 00:07:49 So it's balancing these five purposes.
00:07:49 --> 00:07:51 In fact, at this heartbeat last year,
00:07:51 --> 00:07:56 I mentioned six crucial decisions churches need to make
00:07:56 --> 00:07:58 in order to grow in size and depth.
00:07:58 --> 00:08:04 And three of them have to do with this one, ministry.
00:08:04 --> 00:08:10 Have to do with leadership, service, ministry choices.
00:08:11 --> 00:08:15 The course that some of you have been introduced by me,
00:08:15 --> 00:08:18 from me, called Breaking 200 Without Breaking You,
00:08:19 --> 00:08:22 mentions eight key strategies for breaking the 200 barrier.
00:08:22 --> 00:08:27 Five of the eight have to do with this one,
00:08:28 --> 00:08:30 the way we think about ministry,
00:08:30 --> 00:08:32 the way ministry gets done.
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 And that's our focus tonight.
00:08:35 --> 00:08:39 And the shift that we are looking to do in the next 12 months
00:08:39 --> 00:08:45 is to move away from a church of individuals
00:08:45 --> 00:08:51 filling roles on rosters, plugging gaps, doing a task,
00:08:51 --> 00:08:57 to being a church where we do all of the work of service within teams.
00:08:58 --> 00:09:00 That is, we're doing it together.
00:09:01 --> 00:09:04 We're serving together as opposed to me just doing my bit
00:09:04 --> 00:09:06 that I want to do in my time.
00:09:06 --> 00:09:11 Now, this is simply a flow on from what we looked at last Sunday.
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 If you were here on Sunday,
00:09:13 --> 00:09:16 you would have heard from me
00:09:16 --> 00:09:23 about Christ-exalting connectedness in God's family.
00:09:23 --> 00:09:30 God's intention is for all of humanity to magnify him.
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 That's week one.
00:09:31 --> 00:09:36 Week two, God's intention is to draw us together in order to magnify him.
00:09:37 --> 00:09:39 Week three, which is coming up,
00:09:39 --> 00:09:41 now that he's drawn us together to magnify him,
00:09:41 --> 00:09:43 what is his intent for each one of his children?
00:09:43 --> 00:09:49 He wants every one of his children to grow up into the likeness of his true son.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:53 He wants all of his children that he brings into his family
00:09:53 --> 00:09:57 that he gathers to himself to grow up into the likeness of his son,
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 to have the character of his son.
00:09:58 --> 00:10:03 Week four is that he doesn't want us just to grow up into the likeness of his sons.
00:10:03 --> 00:10:08 He wants us to grow up into the ministry service attitude of his son.
00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 That's God's internal purposes.
00:10:11 --> 00:10:13 And when he builds up his church in that way,
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 he sends us out into mission.
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 That's week five.
00:10:18 --> 00:10:21 So let me just take you to the Bible really quickly on this one
00:10:21 --> 00:10:24 and the idea of teams.
00:10:24 --> 00:10:27 Jesus modeled something for us in terms of relationships.
00:10:28 --> 00:10:30 From all of his hundreds of followers,
00:10:31 --> 00:10:33 he chose 72 for a special ministry.
00:10:33 --> 00:10:36 Luke chapter 10, he sends them out two by two.
00:10:36 --> 00:10:38 Doesn't send them out by themselves, sends them out two by two.
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 And Jesus knows,
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 Jesus himself didn't,
00:10:42 --> 00:10:45 knew that you could not know 70 people closely.
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 And so he also,
00:10:47 --> 00:10:47 amongst that 72,
00:10:48 --> 00:10:51 had his 12 for a closer partnership in life and ministry,
00:10:52 --> 00:10:56 where he specifically instilled stuff and did things with them that he didn't do with the 72.
00:10:57 --> 00:11:00 In Mark chapter 3, verse 14,
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 it says he appointed 12,
00:11:02 --> 00:11:06 designating them apostles that they might be with him.
00:11:07 --> 00:11:10 But even 12 are sometimes too much,
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 and especially if you're an introvert.
00:11:11 --> 00:11:17 And so Jesus has a closer bond with Peter, James and John,
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 just three of the 12.
00:11:18 --> 00:11:20 And on a number of occasions,
00:11:20 --> 00:11:28 it was just those three who had a special time of development with Jesus.
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 Often, in fact,
00:11:30 --> 00:11:34 at the most significant times of Jesus' life and ministry,
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 those three were there.
00:11:35 --> 00:11:42 And sometimes even three is more than some kinds of friendships will allow.
00:11:42 --> 00:11:45 And Jesus seemed to have a particular bond with John,
00:11:45 --> 00:11:48 which John mentioned several times in his gospel,
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 because he got an opportunity to do that.
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 The disciple who Jesus loved.
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 By the way, that's me.
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 I'm talking about you.
00:11:56 --> 00:11:58 Don't know what it says about the other 11,
00:11:58 --> 00:11:58 but anyway.
00:11:59 --> 00:12:01 But five times in his gospel,
00:12:01 --> 00:12:04 he refers to himself as the disciple who Jesus loved.
00:12:04 --> 00:12:06 And so Jesus had his crowds,
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 he had his 72,
00:12:07 --> 00:12:07 he had his 12,
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 he had his three,
00:12:08 --> 00:12:08 and he had his one.
00:12:09 --> 00:12:14 And as he put his mission and his church in motion,
00:12:14 --> 00:12:18 he not only modeled these various levels of relationship,
00:12:18 --> 00:12:22 he sent his ambassadors out into teams
00:12:22 --> 00:12:24 with different levels of relationship.
00:12:26 --> 00:12:29 See, life and ministry for Jesus
00:12:29 --> 00:12:31 was life and ministry together.
00:12:31 --> 00:12:33 It was not even for him,
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 it was a solo affair.
00:12:36 --> 00:12:38 Life and ministry for him
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 was life and ministry together.
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 Then you get to the Apostle Paul
00:12:40 --> 00:12:42 and he follows the same pattern.
00:12:42 --> 00:12:44 Christian ministry appears,
00:12:44 --> 00:12:45 is a ministry together,
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 service together.
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 I don't think it's an accident
00:12:49 --> 00:12:51 that in every single church,
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 the Apostle Paul planted,
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 go and read Acts on this,
00:12:54 --> 00:12:56 he appointed not one elder and pastor,
00:12:56 --> 00:12:58 but multiple elders.
00:13:00 --> 00:13:02 And when Paul and Barnabas,
00:13:02 --> 00:13:04 they had their tiff and they fell out,
00:13:05 --> 00:13:07 and they were wondering what to do
00:13:07 --> 00:13:09 with John Mark who abandoned them
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 on the first mission,
00:13:11 --> 00:13:13 these two giants of the faith
00:13:13 --> 00:13:15 did not have a falling out and disappear
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 and do their own thing.
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 They formed new teams,
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 got the blessing of the church,
00:13:20 --> 00:13:22 and then they were sent out.
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 Barnabas took Mark with him,
00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 he sailed to Cyprus,
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 Paul chose Silas,
00:13:28 --> 00:13:31 and he departed in Acts 15, 39, 40.
00:13:33 --> 00:13:36 When he met Timothy in Acts 16,
00:13:37 --> 00:13:39 he asked Timothy to travel with him
00:13:39 --> 00:13:41 as his ministry co-worker,
00:13:41 --> 00:13:44 even though Timothy was the junior,
00:13:45 --> 00:13:45 learner,
00:13:45 --> 00:13:46 just a kid,
00:13:46 --> 00:13:47 learning still.
00:13:49 --> 00:13:51 And over the next six years,
00:13:53 --> 00:13:57 of the 13 letters that Paul wrote,
00:13:58 --> 00:14:00 he addresses them to the churches
00:14:00 --> 00:14:04 as coming from him and Timothy,
00:14:05 --> 00:14:08 even though Paul was the one who wrote.
00:14:08 --> 00:14:12 He wanted to send it from the team.
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 Now, of course,
00:14:15 --> 00:14:17 the pattern of our life together
00:14:17 --> 00:14:19 is not just a matter of ministry,
00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 strategy,
00:14:20 --> 00:14:20 or partnership.
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 I said on Sunday,
00:14:22 --> 00:14:25 the New Testament is just,
00:14:25 --> 00:14:27 is just this dominance
00:14:27 --> 00:14:29 of connectedness language.
00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 And so I want to take us
00:14:30 --> 00:14:32 to one of those passages now,
00:14:32 --> 00:14:33 really quickly,
00:14:33 --> 00:14:35 1 Corinthians 12,
00:14:35 --> 00:14:37 12 to 27.
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 If you've got your Bibles,
00:14:38 --> 00:14:39 if you've got Bibles apps or whatever,
00:14:39 --> 00:14:40 open them up now.
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 I'm going to jump through this really quickly.
00:14:41 --> 00:14:43 I want to see six things,
00:14:44 --> 00:14:44 briefly,
00:14:44 --> 00:14:45 this is not six,
00:14:45 --> 00:14:46 this is not a six-point sermon,
00:14:46 --> 00:14:47 it's not double length,
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 this is six things,
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 really briefly,
00:14:49 --> 00:14:51 that highlight
00:14:51 --> 00:14:55 about life together in here.
00:14:55 --> 00:14:55 So,
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 first of all,
00:14:58 --> 00:14:59 it says,
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 the church is a body
00:15:01 --> 00:15:04 that's made up of many parts.
00:15:05 --> 00:15:07 Made up of many parts.
00:15:07 --> 00:15:10 And without the parts,
00:15:11 --> 00:15:12 there is no body.
00:15:13 --> 00:15:14 Church is made up of many body,
00:15:15 --> 00:15:15 many parts.
00:15:16 --> 00:15:17 It's a body made up of many parts,
00:15:17 --> 00:15:18 but without the parts,
00:15:18 --> 00:15:19 there is no body.
00:15:19 --> 00:15:22 I went looking for my Mr. Potato Head today.
00:15:22 --> 00:15:23 When I say mine,
00:15:23 --> 00:15:24 it's the kids.
00:15:25 --> 00:15:25 You know,
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 it was beside my bed,
00:15:27 --> 00:15:27 but not anymore.
00:15:28 --> 00:15:29 I went looking for it today,
00:15:29 --> 00:15:30 because it would have been great
00:15:30 --> 00:15:31 to have it here in front of us,
00:15:31 --> 00:15:33 but imagine Mr. Potato Head
00:15:33 --> 00:15:34 and
00:15:34 --> 00:15:36 with just the body,
00:15:36 --> 00:15:38 but no bits attached to him.
00:15:39 --> 00:15:41 That's the picture here,
00:15:41 --> 00:15:42 that it's not a body
00:15:42 --> 00:15:43 without the parts.
00:15:44 --> 00:15:45 Number two,
00:15:46 --> 00:15:46 verse 12,
00:15:46 --> 00:15:48 the unity of the body
00:15:48 --> 00:15:50 is achieved
00:15:50 --> 00:15:51 through the diversity
00:15:51 --> 00:15:52 of the parts.
00:15:52 --> 00:15:54 That is both the diversity
00:15:54 --> 00:15:54 of the people
00:15:54 --> 00:15:56 and the diversity
00:15:56 --> 00:15:56 of the gifting
00:15:56 --> 00:15:57 of the people.
00:15:57 --> 00:15:58 Verse 12,
00:15:58 --> 00:16:00 the body is a unit,
00:16:00 --> 00:16:01 though it be made up
00:16:01 --> 00:16:03 of many parts,
00:16:03 --> 00:16:04 and though all its parts
00:16:04 --> 00:16:05 are many,
00:16:05 --> 00:16:07 they form one body.
00:16:08 --> 00:16:08 So,
00:16:09 --> 00:16:10 you'd have Mr. Potato Head,
00:16:10 --> 00:16:11 you'd put all the arms on
00:16:11 --> 00:16:13 and the hat on
00:16:13 --> 00:16:13 and the legs on
00:16:13 --> 00:16:14 and nose and the ears
00:16:14 --> 00:16:15 and everything,
00:16:15 --> 00:16:15 you go,
00:16:15 --> 00:16:16 there it is.
00:16:17 --> 00:16:18 It's now looking

00:17:31 --> 00:17:36 When we work church to be the homogenous unit principle,

00:17:37 --> 00:17:38 gather with like,
00:17:38 --> 00:17:40 then it looks like a dysfunctional,
00:17:40 --> 00:17:42 weird looking Mr. Potato Head.
00:17:42 --> 00:17:45 Number four,
00:17:45 --> 00:17:47 all the parts need each other
00:17:47 --> 00:17:51 if the body is to function correctly.
00:17:51 --> 00:17:53 In other words,
00:17:53 --> 00:17:56 whatever your part is in the body,
00:17:57 --> 00:17:58 don't ever say,
00:17:59 --> 00:18:01 I have no need for that other part over there.
00:18:03 --> 00:18:04 Verse 20,
00:18:04 --> 00:18:06 the eye cannot say to the hand,
00:18:06 --> 00:18:06 I don't need you.
00:18:07 --> 00:18:09 And the head cannot say to the feet,
00:18:09 --> 00:18:10 I don't need you.
00:18:11 --> 00:18:11 On the contrary,
00:18:11 --> 00:18:12 those parts of the body
00:18:12 --> 00:18:14 that seem to be weaker
00:18:14 --> 00:18:15 are indispensable.
00:18:16 --> 00:18:18 And the parts that we think are less honorable,
00:18:19 --> 00:18:20 we treat with special honor.
00:18:20 --> 00:18:23 And the parts that are unpresentable
00:18:23 --> 00:18:25 are treated with special modesty,

00:18:26 --> 00:18:27 need no special treatment.
00:18:28 --> 00:18:31 But God has combined the members of the body
00:18:31 --> 00:18:33 and has given greater honor
00:18:33 --> 00:18:34 to the parts that lack it.

00:19:12 --> 00:19:13 There is so many things
00:19:13 --> 00:19:14 that happen in the background
00:19:14 --> 00:19:15 that you don't even see,

00:19:16 --> 00:19:17 And without those things
00:19:17 --> 00:19:19 not functioning,
00:19:21 --> 00:19:22 the place starts to fall apart
00:19:22 --> 00:19:24 real quick.
00:19:24 --> 00:19:29 see what happens
00:19:29 --> 00:19:30 if the person
00:19:30 --> 00:19:31 who normally cuts the grass
00:19:31 --> 00:19:32 doesn't turn up
00:19:32 --> 00:19:33 for three weeks.
00:19:35 --> 00:19:37 The so-called unnecessary bits.
00:19:38 --> 00:19:39 See what happens then.
00:19:42 --> 00:19:43 The person who
00:19:43 --> 00:19:45 most of you don't see
00:19:45 --> 00:19:46 who weeds the gardens.
00:19:46 --> 00:19:49 How quickly it would deteriorate.
00:19:49 --> 00:19:51 How quickly people would say,

00:20:10 --> 00:20:11 let's have the same care
00:20:11 --> 00:20:12 for one another
00:20:12 --> 00:20:13 so that,
00:20:13 --> 00:20:14 this is verse 25,
00:20:14 --> 00:20:15 so that there should be
00:20:15 --> 00:20:17 no division in the body
00:20:17 --> 00:20:19 but that its parts
00:20:19 --> 00:20:21 should have equal concern
00:20:21 --> 00:20:22 for each other.
00:20:22 --> 00:20:23 If one part suffers,
00:20:23 --> 00:20:24 every part suffers with it.
00:20:25 --> 00:20:26 If one part is honoured,
00:20:26 --> 00:20:29 every part rejoices with it.
00:20:31 --> 00:20:35 These verses are all about
00:20:35 --> 00:20:36 what James would call
00:20:36 --> 00:20:37 favouritism.
00:20:37 --> 00:20:38 Certain parts
00:20:38 --> 00:20:39 that we'd want to honour
00:20:39 --> 00:20:40 over more,
00:20:40 --> 00:20:40 others,
00:20:42 --> 00:20:43 James would say,
00:20:43 --> 00:20:43 no, no,
00:20:43 --> 00:20:44 there's no favouritism
00:20:44 --> 00:20:45 with the church
00:20:45 --> 00:20:46 and this is saying
00:20:46 --> 00:20:48 care for everyone equally,
00:20:48 --> 00:20:49 honour all equally.
00:20:51 --> 00:20:52 It's no mistake
00:20:52 --> 00:20:53 that this description
00:20:53 --> 00:20:53 of the body
00:20:53 --> 00:20:55 is immediately followed
00:20:55 --> 00:20:57 by 1 Corinthians 13.
00:20:58 --> 00:21:01 The great chapter of love.
00:21:02 --> 00:21:03 Whatever our gifting,
00:21:03 --> 00:21:04 it is only effective
00:21:04 --> 00:21:05 if it is used in love.
00:21:05 --> 00:21:06 Number six,
00:21:06 --> 00:21:08 if only my Sunday sermons

00:21:11 --> 00:21:13 is an encouragement

00:21:27 --> 00:21:28 the parts in the body,

00:22:00 --> 00:22:01 your place.
00:22:04 --> 00:22:05 And yet,

00:22:10 --> 00:22:12 final challenge.
00:22:13 --> 00:22:14 We're told in verse 18
00:22:14 --> 00:22:16 that God arranged the parts
00:22:16 --> 00:22:16 to everyone
00:22:16 --> 00:22:17 that he wants them to be,
00:22:17 --> 00:22:19 but somehow,
00:22:20 --> 00:22:21 verse 18
00:22:21 --> 00:22:22 doesn't negate
00:22:22 --> 00:22:24 verse 31
00:22:24 --> 00:22:25 where Paul says,
00:22:26 --> 00:22:27 but eagerly desire
00:22:27 --> 00:22:29 the greater gifts.
00:22:31 --> 00:22:33 In other words,
00:22:34 --> 00:22:35 grow up
00:22:35 --> 00:22:36 in your service.
00:22:39 --> 00:22:40 Now,
00:22:40 --> 00:22:41 you can't get
00:22:41 --> 00:22:42 the greater gifts
00:22:42 --> 00:22:42 unless God chooses
00:22:42 --> 00:22:43 to give them to you,
00:22:43 --> 00:22:46 but presumably here,
00:22:47 --> 00:22:49 their earnest desire
00:22:49 --> 00:22:50 and preparing
00:22:50 --> 00:22:51 of themselves

00:22:52 --> 00:22:53 as a preliminary
00:22:53 --> 00:22:55 to receiving
00:22:55 --> 00:22:55 the greater gift,

00:23:00 --> 00:23:00 and this is something
00:23:00 --> 00:23:01 we're intending on
00:23:01 --> 00:23:02 deliberately picking up,
00:23:02 --> 00:23:04 quite intentionally picking up
00:23:04 --> 00:23:05 in the next 12 months
00:23:05 --> 00:23:06 in St. Paul's,
00:23:07 --> 00:23:08 is to,
00:23:09 --> 00:23:10 is the challenge
00:23:10 --> 00:23:11 to go further,
00:23:12 --> 00:23:13 the challenge
00:23:13 --> 00:23:13 to train,
00:23:13 --> 00:23:14 to develop,
00:23:15 --> 00:23:16 to equip others,
00:23:16 --> 00:23:17 to recruit,
00:23:17 --> 00:23:19 to seek new opportunities
00:23:19 --> 00:23:19 to serve.
00:23:21 --> 00:23:22 That's the individual
00:23:22 --> 00:23:23 challenge for us all.
00:23:25 --> 00:23:26 And,
00:23:26 --> 00:23:27 and the other thing
00:23:27 --> 00:23:28 that we're seeking to do
00:23:28 --> 00:23:29 is that this
00:23:29 --> 00:23:30 connectedness
00:23:30 --> 00:23:31 and interdependency
00:23:31 --> 00:23:32 culture
00:23:32 --> 00:23:32 that you see
00:23:32 --> 00:23:33 in the New Testament,
00:23:33 --> 00:23:34 the language
00:23:34 --> 00:23:34 of the New Testament,
00:23:35 --> 00:23:36 is something
00:23:36 --> 00:23:37 that we traditionally
00:23:37 --> 00:23:40 really emphasize
00:23:40 --> 00:23:41 through community groups
00:23:41 --> 00:23:42 and we're going to
00:23:42 --> 00:23:42 continue to emphasize
00:23:42 --> 00:23:44 that through community groups
00:23:44 --> 00:23:44 when everyone in the community
00:23:44 --> 00:23:45 groups and connected,
00:23:46 --> 00:23:47 but it's also
00:23:47 --> 00:23:49 the way we want to see
00:23:49 --> 00:23:50 our ministry done
00:23:50 --> 00:23:51 amongst us.
00:23:52 --> 00:23:53 Connectedness.
00:23:54 --> 00:23:55 Working as part
00:23:55 --> 00:23:55 of a team.

00:26:14 --> 00:26:15 is weak

00:26:16 --> 00:26:17 our failings

00:26:21 --> 00:26:22 not gifted at.

00:26:50 --> 00:26:51 gospel conviction.

00:26:52 --> 00:26:53 together in

00:26:55 --> 00:26:56 ministry competencies.

00:26:58 --> 00:26:58 fellowship,

00:26:59 --> 00:27:00 encouragement,
00:27:00 --> 00:27:01 we have fun
00:27:01 --> 00:27:02 and we share
00:27:02 --> 00:27:02 the burdens
00:27:02 --> 00:27:04 and the joys
00:27:04 --> 00:27:04 of life.
00:27:05 --> 00:27:06 Sometimes it feels
00:27:06 --> 00:27:06 more like the
00:27:06 --> 00:27:07 burdens and the joys
00:27:07 --> 00:27:08 but we share the
00:27:08 --> 00:27:09 burdens and the

00:32:05 --> 00:32:06 ministry pathway.

00:32:07 --> 00:32:08 see everyone

00:32:09 --> 00:32:10 ministry pathway,

00:32:11 --> 00:32:12 top of that

00:32:13 --> 00:32:14 sits over the
00:32:14 --> 00:32:15 top of a
00:32:15 --> 00:32:16 ministry pathway

00:32:17 --> 00:32:19 pathway is
00:32:19 --> 00:32:20 ministry grid,

00:32:24 --> 00:32:25 training program

00:32:31 --> 00:32:33 whatever part of

00:33:25 --> 00:33:27 relational connection
00:33:27 --> 00:33:28 as you develop.

00:33:31 --> 00:33:32 agenda,
