00:00:26 --> 00:00:31 and he was arguing the fairness with the person
00:00:31 --> 00:00:32 who was obviously responsible.
00:00:36 --> 00:00:40 A woman was talking about how she could rearrange her finances,
00:00:41 --> 00:00:44 how she could redraw her loan for the time being
00:00:44 --> 00:00:47 after being laid off.
00:00:49 --> 00:00:52 And she was worrying about others in her office.
00:00:52 --> 00:00:57 And another man was talking on the phone
00:00:57 --> 00:01:00 about needing to ask about a new job next week.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:08 Fear, uncertainty, anxiety.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:12 Now, Timothy Keller, you know the book,
00:01:12 --> 00:01:14 this is the book that we've been using,
00:01:14 --> 00:01:16 lying behind the series that we're just preaching
00:01:16 --> 00:01:17 and we've run out of copies at the back.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:18 We've sold them all.
00:01:18 --> 00:01:21 But he writes that just after the GFC,
00:01:22 --> 00:01:26 the global financial crisis began in 2008-2009,
00:01:28 --> 00:01:30 a columnist in the New York Times
00:01:30 --> 00:01:32 wrote about a woman who had just been laid off.
00:01:34 --> 00:01:39 She was known amongst her friends in her workplace
00:01:39 --> 00:01:43 to be hardworking, fair, honest,
00:01:43 --> 00:01:47 and she had been really generous with her money towards friends
00:01:47 --> 00:01:48 and very charitable.
00:01:52 --> 00:01:53 Her work specialty
00:01:53 --> 00:01:58 had been parceling up high-risk debt
00:01:58 --> 00:01:59 and selling it to investors.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:04 She was doing something in her work
00:02:04 --> 00:02:06 that played a sinister role
00:02:06 --> 00:02:09 in the downfall of the world economy.
00:02:09 --> 00:02:14 She didn't think about it.
00:02:16 --> 00:02:18 She was just doing her job,
00:02:18 --> 00:02:19 ethical in her personal life,
00:02:20 --> 00:02:23 unthinking about this area of ethics in her employment.
00:02:25 --> 00:02:27 And Keller says that these things have happened
00:02:27 --> 00:02:29 because the business community
00:02:29 --> 00:02:31 had a distorted ethical compass.
00:02:33 --> 00:02:34 Their compass said
00:02:34 --> 00:02:36 that if the practice is legal
00:02:36 --> 00:02:38 and everybody is doing it,
00:02:38 --> 00:02:40 the only fundamental question is
00:02:40 --> 00:02:41 can money be made?
00:02:45 --> 00:02:46 The driving ethic?
00:02:47 --> 00:02:48 Can money be made?
00:02:48 --> 00:02:49 How do I maximise profit?
00:02:51 --> 00:02:54 And lying behind the ethic is the question,
00:02:54 --> 00:02:56 who am I responsible to?
00:02:56 --> 00:03:02 Now, I reckon most of us operate within the law.
00:03:02 --> 00:03:05 We would think of ourselves as law-abiding citizens.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:06 We don't cheat on taxes.
00:03:07 --> 00:03:09 We obey most of the road rules.
00:03:12 --> 00:03:15 I would have liked to have been a fly on the wall
00:03:15 --> 00:03:16 in the community groups this week,
00:03:16 --> 00:03:17 those that met,
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 because I think the first discussion question
00:03:19 --> 00:03:21 was the statement,
00:03:21 --> 00:03:24 if it's legal, it is right.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:25 Discuss.

00:04:01 --> 00:04:02 but it might not be safe.
00:04:05 --> 00:04:07 You can visit a brothel
00:04:07 --> 00:04:08 or you can work in a brothel
00:04:08 --> 00:04:09 and it's legal.
00:04:09 --> 00:04:14 A future day may come
00:04:14 --> 00:04:17 when you can legally marry a person of the same gender.
00:04:19 --> 00:04:22 At the Nuremberg trials of former Nazis
00:04:22 --> 00:04:23 after the Second World War,
00:04:24 --> 00:04:25 defendants continually stepped forward
00:04:25 --> 00:04:26 and they said,
00:04:27 --> 00:04:29 I was only following orders.
00:04:30 --> 00:04:31 It's another way of saying
00:04:31 --> 00:04:32 I was following my leaders,
00:04:33 --> 00:04:35 I was being faithful to my leaders' instructions.
00:04:35 --> 00:04:42 See, it doesn't matter how good a person you think you are,
00:04:43 --> 00:04:48 life with Christ is going to bring you into conflict with the world.
00:04:48 --> 00:04:51 And that means in our life's vocations.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:54 Throughout this series,
00:04:54 --> 00:04:56 we have said that we live in a fallen world,
00:04:57 --> 00:04:59 that we've said that work in a fallen world
00:04:59 --> 00:05:02 is distorted from God's good creation purposes.
00:05:02 --> 00:05:06 We have difficulties in our workplaces,
00:05:06 --> 00:05:08 we have difficulties in our families,
00:05:09 --> 00:05:13 we have difficulties in our schools and our universities.
00:05:14 --> 00:05:18 And sometimes those difficulties are a direct consequence
00:05:18 --> 00:05:20 of who we are in Christ and what we believe.
00:05:22 --> 00:05:25 Godly parents say no to children sometimes.
00:05:26 --> 00:05:29 Godly employees will not sign off on everything
00:05:29 --> 00:05:30 that they are asked to.
00:05:30 --> 00:05:34 Jesus said,
00:05:34 --> 00:05:35 John 15,
00:05:35 --> 00:05:36 If the world hates you,
00:05:36 --> 00:05:38 keep in mind that it hated me first.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:41 If you belong to the world,
00:05:42 --> 00:05:43 it would love you as its own.
00:05:44 --> 00:05:45 As it is,
00:05:45 --> 00:05:47 you do not belong to the world,
00:05:47 --> 00:05:49 but I have chosen you out of the world
00:05:49 --> 00:05:51 and that is why the world hates you.
00:05:56 --> 00:05:57 Faith in Jesus Christ
00:05:57 --> 00:06:00 brings us to a very distinctive view of the world.

00:06:04 --> 00:06:07 And sometimes they both come at the same time.
00:06:08 --> 00:06:11 Last week I think I said that the earth is the Lord's
00:06:11 --> 00:06:12 and everything in it,
00:06:12 --> 00:06:13 all people,
00:06:13 --> 00:06:15 live under the ordinary grace of God
00:06:15 --> 00:06:17 whether they believe in God or not.
00:06:19 --> 00:06:21 And it's really liberating
00:06:21 --> 00:06:22 because it sets us free
00:06:22 --> 00:06:25 to be appreciative of the skills
00:06:25 --> 00:06:26 and the abilities
00:06:26 --> 00:06:27 and the graces
00:06:27 --> 00:06:30 that God has given to unbelievers
00:06:30 --> 00:06:34 because ultimately their abilities
00:06:34 --> 00:06:35 are from God's hand
00:06:35 --> 00:06:38 even if they do not acknowledge him.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:42 And it also sets us free
00:06:42 --> 00:06:44 because free from feeling like
00:06:44 --> 00:06:46 we have to excel at everything.
00:06:46 --> 00:06:51 It's absolutely ridiculous
00:06:51 --> 00:06:53 to expect our children
00:06:53 --> 00:06:56 to be top dog in every endeavour.
00:06:59 --> 00:07:01 We are to be the people
00:07:01 --> 00:07:02 that God wants us to be
00:07:02 --> 00:07:04 in the place where God has put us
00:07:04 --> 00:07:06 and imperfect as I am,
00:07:07 --> 00:07:10 I will continue to try to be
00:07:10 --> 00:07:11 the man who loves my wife
00:07:11 --> 00:07:12 or my children
00:07:12 --> 00:07:15 better than any other man on the planet.
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 I can be distinctive

00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 where God has put me.

00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 or unpaid employment
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 or whether our vocation
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 is nurturing a family
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 or going to school,
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 being at uni,
00:07:45 --> 00:07:45 working hard,
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 whatever it is there,
00:07:47 --> 00:07:48 the ethical view
00:07:48 --> 00:07:49 that we should drive us
00:07:49 --> 00:07:50 comes from the mouth
00:07:50 --> 00:07:51 of Jesus himself.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 When he was asked
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 what the greatest commandment
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 in the Bible was,
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 he gave two.
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 Matthew 22.
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 Jesus said,
00:07:59 --> 00:08:00 Love the Lord your God
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 with all your heart
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 and with all your soul
00:08:02 --> 00:08:04 and with all your mind.
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 This is the first
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 and greatest commandment.
00:08:08 --> 00:08:10 And the second is like it,
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 you shall love
00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 your neighbour as yourself.
00:08:12 --> 00:08:14 all the law
00:08:14 --> 00:08:14 and the prophets,
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 all the scriptures
00:08:15 --> 00:08:18 hang on these two commandments.
00:08:22 --> 00:08:24 And those commandments
00:08:24 --> 00:08:25 say that relationships
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 are at the heart
00:08:26 --> 00:08:28 of Christian living.
00:08:31 --> 00:08:31 Keller's book
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 tells the story
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 of a woman
00:08:33 --> 00:08:35 who left a highly paid job
00:08:35 --> 00:08:37 to work in her local church.
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 She co-wrote this book.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:41 And she was going on one day
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 about all her contacts
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 and what she was going to do
00:08:43 --> 00:08:44 and the pastor
00:08:44 --> 00:08:45 very gently said,
00:08:46 --> 00:08:48 In this business,
00:08:48 --> 00:08:50 we call them people.
00:08:57 --> 00:08:59 So we're not bums on seats
00:08:59 --> 00:09:02 or consumers of products
00:09:02 --> 00:09:05 or resources to be redeployed

00:09:30 --> 00:09:33 but that he loved us

00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 as an atoning sacrifice
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 for our sins.

00:09:38 --> 00:09:40 since God so loved us,
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 we ought to love one another.
