00:00:00 --> 00:00:04 During a conference quite a number of years ago now on comparative religions,
00:00:05 --> 00:00:16 experts from around the world debated what belief, if any belief, was unique to the Christian faith.
00:00:17 --> 00:00:20 And they began by eliminating a bunch of possibilities.
00:00:20 --> 00:00:22 The incarnation.
00:00:22 --> 00:00:31 They thought, no, actually other religions have different versions of their gods appearing in the world in human form to people.
00:00:31 --> 00:00:33 So what about resurrection?
00:00:34 --> 00:00:40 Again, other religions had accounts of people returning back from death.
00:00:41 --> 00:00:48 And the debate went on for some time until the Oxford Don C.S. Lewis walked into the room
00:00:48 --> 00:00:53 and in his classic C.S. Lewis style said, so what's all this rumpus about?
00:00:54 --> 00:01:00 And when he heard that they were debating the unique contribution of Christianity and had for some time,
00:01:01 --> 00:01:03 Lewis just responded, just jumped on it.
00:01:03 --> 00:01:04 He said, well, that's easy.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:05 It's grace.
00:01:07 --> 00:01:07 Grace.
00:01:09 --> 00:01:11 And after some discussion, the conference agreed.
00:01:11 --> 00:01:22 The notion of God's love coming to humanity free of charge, no strings attached,
00:01:22 --> 00:01:28 goes against every world religion and every instinct of humanity.
00:01:29 --> 00:01:32 There's the Buddhist eightfold path.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:39 There's the Hindu doctrine of karma, the Jewish covenant, the Muslim code of law.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:46 Each of these offers a way to earn approval or to stay in approval.
00:01:48 --> 00:01:53 Only Christianity dares to declare God's love as unconditional.
00:01:54 --> 00:01:55 You can't earn it.
00:01:56 --> 00:01:57 It's not yours by right.
00:01:58 --> 00:01:59 You don't deserve it.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:00 You don't ever deserve it.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:06 Now, grace is a word that's familiar to our ears.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:06 Grace.
00:02:07 --> 00:02:09 It can be a person's name.
00:02:10 --> 00:02:13 It can be an attitude, a gracious attitude.
00:02:14 --> 00:02:19 It can be a prayer that you say before dinner if you're not terribly hungry.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:23 It's even a name of a hotel in Sydney.
00:02:24 --> 00:02:26 Ironically, however, there are no free rooms.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:33 The word grace in the Greek New Testament is the word charis.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:37 And it's a holy Christian word.
00:02:39 --> 00:02:40 It was a word.
00:02:40 --> 00:02:47 The word charis was unknown in Greek or Roman ethics and theology before Christianity.
00:02:47 --> 00:02:54 This doctrine of grace gave rise to a new word for grace.
00:02:55 --> 00:03:00 Grace in Christianity is a personal activity of God.
00:03:00 --> 00:03:04 God operates in unconditional love towards people.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:06 Grace is generosity.
00:03:06 --> 00:03:14 It's when something is given purely out of the goodness and the kindness of the giver,
00:03:15 --> 00:03:18 despite the unworthiness of the recipient.
00:03:19 --> 00:03:24 And salvation in Christianity is a work of God, not people.
00:03:25 --> 00:03:27 It's a work of God from beginning to end,
00:03:28 --> 00:03:31 and is given freely and undeservedly through Jesus Christ,
00:03:31 --> 00:03:35 as we just sang in three songs to kick our service off.
00:03:35 --> 00:03:41 And this was the rediscovery or one of the rediscoveries of the Protestant Reformation,
00:03:41 --> 00:03:45 the 16th century, that has come down to us over these 500 years.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:48 As we started this series off,
00:03:48 --> 00:03:51 salvation is according to Scripture alone,
00:03:51 --> 00:03:55 in Christ alone, by grace alone,
00:03:55 --> 00:03:59 through faith alone, for the glory of God alone.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:00 That is our heritage.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:05 It's St. Paul's, and it's where we take our stand as a church today.
00:04:05 --> 00:04:07 And in the past two weeks,
00:04:07 --> 00:04:09 we've been reminded of two key foundations so far
00:04:09 --> 00:04:15 to biblical Christianity that were rediscovered in the Reformation 500 years ago.
00:04:15 --> 00:04:17 Scripture alone, that is,
00:04:17 --> 00:04:20 it's not the Bible plus the traditions
00:04:20 --> 00:04:24 and the authority of the church and reason and experience.
00:04:24 --> 00:04:27 And it's Christ alone,
00:04:27 --> 00:04:33 not Jesus plus human priests and the sacrifice of the mass.
00:04:34 --> 00:04:37 And next week, we're going to explore faith alone.
00:04:37 --> 00:04:43 It's not faith in Jesus plus good works for the basis of my salvation.
00:04:45 --> 00:04:48 And to these, the reformers added grace alone.
00:04:48 --> 00:04:56 And in a sense, grace alone summarizes and explains
00:04:56 --> 00:04:58 the two that we've already done,
00:04:58 --> 00:04:59 the one we're going to do next week.
00:05:01 --> 00:05:03 The Bible, the Word of God,
00:05:04 --> 00:05:07 comes to us from outside of us.
00:05:09 --> 00:05:13 It stands as a gracious gift of God to humanity.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:16 It's God communicating to us
00:05:16 --> 00:05:19 because without it, we would not see or know God.
00:05:20 --> 00:05:22 And Jesus Christ alone is the way to God.
00:05:23 --> 00:05:26 And Jesus again comes from outside of us,
00:05:26 --> 00:05:29 purely and only because of the kindness and love of God.
00:05:30 --> 00:05:31 We don't earn him.
00:05:31 --> 00:05:33 We don't contribute to his work
00:05:33 --> 00:05:38 or help him finish off what he lacked.
00:05:38 --> 00:05:43 Jesus does everything through the generosity of God.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 Even the ability, this is what we're going to see next week,
00:05:45 --> 00:05:50 even the ability to see and to trust in God,
00:05:51 --> 00:05:54 as we just read in Ephesians 2,
00:05:54 --> 00:05:55 is a gift of God itself.
00:05:57 --> 00:06:01 Our response is nothing more than an open hand,
00:06:02 --> 00:06:03 held out in trust,
00:06:04 --> 00:06:05 that says thank you
00:06:05 --> 00:06:08 to the wonderful promises of God.
00:06:09 --> 00:06:12 The grace of God is love freely shown
00:06:12 --> 00:06:15 towards guilty sinners,
00:06:15 --> 00:06:18 contrary to their merit,
00:06:19 --> 00:06:22 and in fact in defiance of their demerit.
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 You see, the context of the Reformers
00:06:25 --> 00:06:28 rediscovering grace alone in the Bible
00:06:28 --> 00:06:31 was a church that believed in grace.
00:06:32 --> 00:06:33 That's the context.
00:06:33 --> 00:06:35 It was a church that actually believed in grace.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:39 You see, Roman Catholic teaching states
00:06:39 --> 00:06:43 that God's grace is God's free favour
00:06:43 --> 00:06:45 and generosity towards sinners.
00:06:45 --> 00:06:46 grace is God's free.
00:06:47 --> 00:06:48 But,
00:06:48 --> 00:06:52 and in this case,
00:06:52 --> 00:06:54 the word but says everything.
00:06:55 --> 00:06:57 It is also,
00:06:57 --> 00:07:00 grace is also a kind of power or assistance
00:07:00 --> 00:07:02 in which God gives us
00:07:02 --> 00:07:06 to help people to respond to him
00:07:06 --> 00:07:08 and help people live through life.
00:07:08 --> 00:07:10 And that's,
00:07:10 --> 00:07:11 the word but,
00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 is where it goes wrong.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 In the Catechism of the Catholic Church,
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 it reads,
00:07:16 --> 00:07:18 we can merit for ourselves
00:07:18 --> 00:07:20 and for others
00:07:20 --> 00:07:22 the graces needed
00:07:22 --> 00:07:23 for sanctification,
00:07:24 --> 00:07:26 for the increase of grace
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 and for charity
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 and for the attainment
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 of eternal life.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:33 What that means
00:07:33 --> 00:07:36 is that salvation
00:07:36 --> 00:07:39 in all its different forms
00:07:39 --> 00:07:41 becomes a cooperation
00:07:41 --> 00:07:44 between us and God.
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 This view of grace
00:07:47 --> 00:07:50 is built on a particular view of humanity.
00:07:50 --> 00:07:52 A view that says
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 that people are sinful.
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 Yeah, yeah,
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 we're all broken,
00:07:55 --> 00:07:55 we're all sinful,
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 but we are still capable
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 as human beings
00:07:58 --> 00:08:00 of reaching out to God
00:08:00 --> 00:08:02 and communicating with God
00:08:02 --> 00:08:03 and with his assistance
00:08:03 --> 00:08:04 turning our life around.
00:08:04 --> 00:08:07 But,
00:08:07 --> 00:08:08 so,
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 for us to understand,
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 therefore,
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 what grace is,
00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 we need to go back to the Bible
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 and embrace
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 and see
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 the need
00:08:15 --> 00:08:17 of grace alone.
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 For us to be able to do that,
00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 we need an accurate diagnosis
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 of the actual human condition.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:25 And if we hold to
00:08:25 --> 00:08:27 what I preached on two weeks ago
00:08:27 --> 00:08:29 about Scripture alone
00:08:29 --> 00:08:30 being authority
00:08:30 --> 00:08:32 and not my experience of the world
00:08:32 --> 00:08:34 or not my feelings about myself
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 or anything else,
00:08:35 --> 00:08:37 that if that is our authority,
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 then we need to hear what it says.
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 And the right diagnosis
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 was just read out to us.
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 This is the human condition,
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 Ephesians 2 verse 1.
00:08:44 --> 00:08:45 As for you,
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 you were dead
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 in your transgressions
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 and sins
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 in which you used to live
00:08:49 --> 00:08:49 when you followed
00:08:49 --> 00:08:51 the ways of this world
00:08:51 --> 00:08:51 and of the ruler
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 of the kingdom of the air,
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 the spirit who is now at work
00:08:54 --> 00:08:56 in those who are disobedient.
00:08:56 --> 00:08:58 All of us also lived among them
00:08:58 --> 00:08:59 at one time,
00:08:59 --> 00:09:00 gratifying and cravings
00:09:00 --> 00:09:02 of our sinful nature
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 and following us desires
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 and thoughts
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 and like the rest,
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 we were by nature
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 objects of wrath.
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 Or we also see the diagnosis
00:09:08 --> 00:09:11 in Romans 3 verses 10 to 12.
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 There is no one righteous,
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 not even one.
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 There is no one who understands.
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 There is no one who seeks God.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 All have turned away.
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 They have altogether
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 become worthless.
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 There is no one
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 who does good,
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 not even one.
00:09:27 --> 00:09:29 That's the authority
00:09:29 --> 00:09:32 of Scripture's perspective
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 on the human condition.
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 No one righteous,
00:09:35 --> 00:09:37 no one who seeks God,
00:09:37 --> 00:09:37 worthless,
00:09:38 --> 00:09:38 dead,
00:09:39 --> 00:09:41 left to our own devices.
00:09:42 --> 00:09:42 We are dead
00:09:42 --> 00:09:44 in our sins.
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 And the core nature
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 of humanity
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 is not that we are
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 basically good,
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 it's that we're actually
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 fundamentally bad.
00:09:51 --> 00:09:53 We are spiritually bankrupt.
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 We are spiritually dead.
00:09:54 --> 00:09:54 dead.
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 And dead people
00:09:56 --> 00:09:58 don't respond
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 to anything.
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 I've,
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 in my job,
00:10:01 --> 00:10:03 I've done a lot of funerals
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 over the years
00:10:04 --> 00:10:06 and a number of those funerals
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 have been open coffin funerals.
00:10:08 --> 00:10:10 And it's an awkward thing
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 if you've ever had that experience
00:10:11 --> 00:10:13 where the funeral director
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 tells you,
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 which I'm assuming you haven't,
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 the funeral director
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 tells you,
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 we're going to have
00:10:18 --> 00:10:18 an open coffin
00:10:18 --> 00:10:20 and your job
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 is to stand beside the coffin
00:10:21 --> 00:10:23 and sort of be there
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 for people as they come.
00:10:24 --> 00:10:26 And more often than not,
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 no one really wants
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 to get there early
00:10:28 --> 00:10:28 for that occasion.
00:10:29 --> 00:10:31 Most people come,
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 you know,
00:10:32 --> 00:10:32 at the last minute.
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 So I'm standing there
00:10:34 --> 00:10:34 beside Bill
00:10:34 --> 00:10:36 or whoever it is,
00:10:37 --> 00:10:37 coffin open
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 and it's me
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 and this person
00:10:39 --> 00:10:41 and no one else,
00:10:42 --> 00:10:42 no one else
00:10:42 --> 00:10:44 for some time,
00:10:44 --> 00:10:46 often three quarters of an hour.
00:10:46 --> 00:10:48 and in my,
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 maybe it's me dealing
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 with the issue at the moment
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 and my black humour,
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 I often talk to the person
00:10:52 --> 00:10:56 and they never,
00:10:56 --> 00:10:59 ever speak back to me.
00:10:59 --> 00:10:59 Ever.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 Not that I'm expecting it,
00:11:02 --> 00:11:05 but they never speak back to me.
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 I can practice my sermon,
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 I can sing songs,
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 they never join in,
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 they never participate
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 in any way
00:11:10 --> 00:11:12 because dead people
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 don't respond.
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 They don't have life
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 to respond.
00:11:17 --> 00:11:19 And that's the biblical picture.
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 It's not that we
00:11:23 --> 00:11:25 are all as bad
00:11:25 --> 00:11:27 as we could possibly be,
00:11:28 --> 00:11:30 but that because of sin
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 we are totally marred
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 in every aspect
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 of our being
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 and we are spiritually dead.
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 We are corpses,
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 we're not drowning,
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 we're drowned,
00:11:41 --> 00:11:41 we're dead.
00:11:41 --> 00:11:44 Unfortunately,
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 as Sam mentioned last week,
00:11:45 --> 00:11:47 some people understand
00:11:47 --> 00:11:49 grace as God
00:11:49 --> 00:11:51 making up the difference
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 between our good
00:11:52 --> 00:11:52 and the amount of good
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 that God requires.
00:11:54 --> 00:11:54 So,
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 I mean,
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 it's like,
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 depending on how you've lived your life,
00:11:59 --> 00:12:01 you've got different amounts of good.
00:12:02 --> 00:12:04 Nice middle class people
00:12:04 --> 00:12:07 don't need as much
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 good as
00:12:08 --> 00:12:10 topping up as,
00:12:10 --> 00:12:10 for instance,
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 a criminal
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 sitting in Long Bay Jail.
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 But whatever it is,
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 God makes the requirements.
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 So you can imagine,
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 I want to buy a car
00:12:17 --> 00:12:19 that costs $100,
00:12:19 --> 00:12:19 which I
00:12:19 --> 00:12:21 don't want to,
00:12:21 --> 00:12:22 but I've only got
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 $50,
00:12:24 --> 00:12:24 which I also
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 don't have.
00:12:26 --> 00:12:28 And this view of grace
00:12:28 --> 00:12:28 means that,
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 well,
00:12:29 --> 00:12:29 I've got $50,
00:12:30 --> 00:12:30 it's $100,
00:12:30 --> 00:12:30 well,
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 God will just,
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 you know,
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 kindly top up
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 what I need.
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 It sounds nice,
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 but it's a grave
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 misunderstanding
00:12:39 --> 00:12:41 both of grace
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 and of our lack
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 of righteousness.
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 We've got nothing to offer,
00:12:44 --> 00:12:45 we've got nothing to contribute.
00:12:45 --> 00:12:46 Not only do we
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 not have
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 any righteousness
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 into our account,
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 we've actually got debt
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 in our account.
00:12:53 --> 00:12:53 And so we need
00:12:53 --> 00:12:54 God's grace
00:12:54 --> 00:12:55 not just to make up
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 for our deficiencies,
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 we need His grace
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 to provide a remedy
00:12:58 --> 00:13:00 for our rebellion,
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 for our guilt,
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 for our pollution,
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 our sin,
00:13:03 --> 00:13:04 our debt
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 against God,
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 which is incalculable.
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 We need His grace
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 to provide a satisfaction
00:13:09 --> 00:13:11 for His justice
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 and to cancel
00:13:12 --> 00:13:12 a debt
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 that we cannot pay.
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 And so it's absolutely
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 crucial that we
00:13:16 --> 00:13:18 understand our plights
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 before God
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 if we're going
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 to understand
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 and be amazed
00:13:22 --> 00:13:22 by grace
00:13:22 --> 00:13:24 because those
00:13:24 --> 00:13:24 who have been
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 forgiven little
00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 in their minds
00:13:26 --> 00:13:28 don't love much.
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 Don't appreciate
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 grace
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 much.
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 This is how
00:13:35 --> 00:13:35 one person
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 has put it.
00:13:37 --> 00:13:37 The first
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 and possibly
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 the most fundamental
00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 characteristic
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 of divine grace
00:13:41 --> 00:13:43 is that it presupposes
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 sin and guilt.
00:13:45 --> 00:13:46 Grace has meaning
00:13:46 --> 00:13:47 only.
00:13:48 --> 00:13:50 It only has meaning
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 when people
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 are seen
00:13:52 --> 00:13:52 as fallen,
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 unworthy
00:13:54 --> 00:13:54 of salvation
00:13:54 --> 00:13:56 and liable
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 to eternal
00:13:57 --> 00:13:57 wrath.
00:13:58 --> 00:13:59 Grace does not
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 contemplate sin
00:14:00 --> 00:14:00 as merely
00:14:00 --> 00:14:02 as undeserving
00:14:02 --> 00:14:03 but as
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 ill-deserving.
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 It's not simply
00:14:06 --> 00:14:07 that we do not
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 deserve grace
00:14:08 --> 00:14:10 but that we do
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 deserve hell.
00:14:11 --> 00:14:15 that's
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 that's the
00:14:16 --> 00:14:17 bleak
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 pronouncement
00:14:18 --> 00:14:21 of our
00:14:21 --> 00:14:21 natural state
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 before God.
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 But in the very
00:14:24 --> 00:14:24 next verses
00:14:24 --> 00:14:25 in Ephesians
00:14:25 --> 00:14:26 we have the hope
00:14:26 --> 00:14:27 of grace.
00:14:27 --> 00:14:28 Ephesians 2
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 verse 4
00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 but
00:14:30 --> 00:14:32 the word
00:14:32 --> 00:14:33 but there
00:14:33 --> 00:14:34 is a very
00:14:34 --> 00:14:34 different word

00:17:20 --> 00:17:21 commandments and
00:17:21 --> 00:17:22 he's sitting
00:17:22 --> 00:17:23 there in his
00:17:23 --> 00:17:23 mental thing
00:17:23 --> 00:17:24 and his
00:17:24 --> 00:17:24 heart going
00:17:24 --> 00:17:25 ticking off the
00:17:25 --> 00:17:25 box.
00:17:25 --> 00:17:25 Yeah, done
00:17:25 --> 00:17:26 that one.
00:17:26 --> 00:17:26 Yeah, done

00:18:08 --> 00:18:09 the disciples
00:18:09 --> 00:18:09 are over here
00:18:09 --> 00:18:10 and they're
00:18:10 --> 00:18:10 hearing this
00:18:10 --> 00:18:11 encounter go
00:18:11 --> 00:18:12 on.
00:18:13 --> 00:18:14 They see the
00:18:14 --> 00:18:14 rich young man
00:18:14 --> 00:18:15 walk away
00:18:15 --> 00:18:17 and Peter,
00:18:17 --> 00:18:18 as he has a
00:18:18 --> 00:18:18 tendency to do,
00:18:18 --> 00:18:19 speaks first
00:18:19 --> 00:18:21 and he says,
00:18:22 --> 00:18:22 well,
00:18:23 --> 00:18:23 Jesus,
00:18:23 --> 00:18:24 then who
00:18:24 --> 00:18:25 can be
00:18:25 --> 00:18:26 saved?
00:18:26 --> 00:18:29 And Jesus
00:18:29 --> 00:18:29 says,
00:18:30 --> 00:18:31 with man,
00:18:31 --> 00:18:31 this is
00:18:31 --> 00:18:31 impossible.

00:18:32 --> 00:18:33 all things are

00:19:26 --> 00:19:27 the morning,
00:19:27 --> 00:19:27 the third
00:19:27 --> 00:19:27 hour,
00:19:27 --> 00:19:28 the sixth
00:19:28 --> 00:19:28 hour,
00:19:28 --> 00:19:29 the ninth
00:19:29 --> 00:19:29 hour,
00:19:29 --> 00:19:29 and right
00:19:29 --> 00:19:29 to the
00:19:29 --> 00:19:30 very end
00:19:30 --> 00:19:30 of the
00:19:30 --> 00:19:30 day in
