00:00:10 --> 00:00:14 I wonder why you're not down at the movies.
00:00:15 --> 00:00:22 I wonder why you're not at home winding down in front of the TV or sleeping in.
00:00:22 --> 00:00:30 I wonder why you're not at a cafe having coffee, morning tea, brunch, whatever it is.
00:00:31 --> 00:00:37 I wonder why you're not at the gym, why you're not walking the dog, visiting friends and family,
00:00:37 --> 00:00:39 why you're not playing a board game.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:42 I wonder why you're here.
00:00:44 --> 00:00:47 Is it because there's nothing better to do?
00:00:49 --> 00:00:50 Maybe that's it.
00:00:52 --> 00:00:57 If there was something better to do or something more pressing, then in fact you wouldn't be here.
00:00:59 --> 00:01:03 After all, it's only church, isn't it?
00:01:06 --> 00:01:10 I wonder if you're comfortable with the way that those words connect together.
00:01:11 --> 00:01:13 Only church.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:22 I wonder if meeting as a church fits in around everything else that's going on and we fit it in when it's convenient.
00:01:24 --> 00:01:25 And other things are not too pressing.
00:01:28 --> 00:01:35 Maybe it's not an afterthought, but still you wouldn't make too much of a deal about church.
00:01:35 --> 00:01:45 If you're comfortable with the words, it's only church.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:50 And if you're comfortable not making too much of a deal about church,
00:01:50 --> 00:01:55 then I want to invite you to look with me at Ephesians 3 and 4.
00:01:56 --> 00:02:02 You'll notice that church is mentioned twice in chapter 3 as it was read out.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:05 And I want you to notice the wording.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:10 First of all, in verse 10 of chapter 3,
00:02:10 --> 00:02:32 Manifold means literally multicolored.
00:02:32 --> 00:02:34 It means multifaceted.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:46 It's the same words that's used in the Old Testament for Joseph's fancy multicolored coat that stood out from everyone else's.
00:02:49 --> 00:02:57 That is, the church is God's brightly colored neon sign to the universe.
00:02:57 --> 00:03:08 The church is the public advertisement, the public display of the wisdom of God.
00:03:13 --> 00:03:19 So it would seem strange to glibly refer to it as only church.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:24 Secondly, notice in verses 20 and 21, Paul says,
00:03:24 --> 00:03:30 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine,
00:03:31 --> 00:03:34 according to his power that is at work within us,
00:03:34 --> 00:03:42 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever. Amen.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:44 Follow the wording.
00:03:45 --> 00:03:52 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than we ask or even imagine,
00:03:52 --> 00:03:57 according to his power that is at work within us,
00:03:57 --> 00:04:07 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations forever and ever. Amen.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:10 See, when God gathers together his church,
00:04:12 --> 00:04:18 it is a beacon of his glory to the universe.
00:04:18 --> 00:04:29 Now while your experience of church might have been disappointment or something slightly boring
00:04:29 --> 00:04:33 or relationships have been less than what could have been,
00:04:35 --> 00:04:41 we are here today in this moment to catch a glimpse of God's intentions
00:04:41 --> 00:04:44 and recommit ourselves to it this year.
00:04:44 --> 00:04:50 And God's plan, his eternal plan,
00:04:50 --> 00:04:51 if you want to know what the will of God is,
00:04:51 --> 00:04:53 if you want to know what his will is, his plan is,
00:04:53 --> 00:04:58 it is devastatingly simple and disarmingly beautiful.
00:04:58 --> 00:05:02 And Paul's language here bubbles with greatness and beauty.
00:05:02 --> 00:05:08 He refers to the unsearchable riches of Christ in verse 8.
00:05:08 --> 00:05:12 The manifold wisdom of God in verse 10.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:16 The glorious riches of the Father in verse 16.
00:05:16 --> 00:05:22 And the love of God that surpasses knowledge in verse 19.
00:05:22 --> 00:05:28 Wonderful rich language that all talk about the very same thing.
00:05:28 --> 00:05:39 The eternal plan of God to bring a new society together under the lordship of Christ
00:05:39 --> 00:05:47 from all kinds of people who are bound together in love.
00:05:48 --> 00:05:49 That's his plan.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:54 And in chapters 1 and 2 of Ephesians,
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 Paul says that the great inheritance,
00:05:56 --> 00:05:59 the great promises of God,
00:05:59 --> 00:06:02 that the people of Israel had,
00:06:02 --> 00:06:05 the great hope of the coming king
00:06:05 --> 00:06:08 that the Jews had held on for generations,
00:06:08 --> 00:06:12 had finally arrived in the coming of the lord Jesus Christ.
00:06:12 --> 00:06:18 And Jesus' death on the cross brought forgiveness of sins.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:22 His resurrection and return to the father
00:06:22 --> 00:06:24 brought the pouring out of the Holy Spirit.
00:06:25 --> 00:06:29 But the big surprise in chapters 1 and 2
00:06:29 --> 00:06:33 is that the Gentiles are sharing with it.
00:06:36 --> 00:06:39 Jew and Gentile are being brought together
00:06:39 --> 00:06:43 into one new humanity in the local church.
00:06:48 --> 00:06:50 And that's exactly the idea
00:06:50 --> 00:06:53 that Paul now continues in chapter 3.
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 And that's why he's praying
00:06:55 --> 00:06:57 that the church,
00:06:58 --> 00:06:59 and this church in Ephesus
00:06:59 --> 00:07:01 and every church from there,
00:07:02 --> 00:07:05 will be a beacon of unity and love.
00:07:05 --> 00:07:10 Now, Ephesians 3
00:07:10 --> 00:07:12 is one of those chapters
00:07:12 --> 00:07:14 that's kind of messy
00:07:14 --> 00:07:16 when you read through it.
00:07:17 --> 00:07:19 And Paul picks up the thought
00:07:19 --> 00:07:21 at the end of chapter 2,
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 which says,
00:07:23 --> 00:07:25 you too are being built together
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 to become a dwelling
00:07:26 --> 00:07:28 in which God lives by his spirit.
00:07:29 --> 00:07:32 And he begins chapter 3
00:07:32 --> 00:07:34 by sort of like,
00:07:34 --> 00:07:36 I'm going to pray
00:07:36 --> 00:07:39 that that is going to be true
00:07:39 --> 00:07:40 for you, Ephesians.
00:07:41 --> 00:07:43 So he starts in chapter 3,
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 verse 1,
00:07:44 --> 00:07:46 for this reason,
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 I, Paul, the prisoner
00:07:47 --> 00:07:49 of Christ Jesus,
00:07:49 --> 00:07:51 for the sake of you Gentiles.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:54 And then he stops.
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 He breaks his thought
00:07:57 --> 00:07:59 and he goes on a detour
00:07:59 --> 00:08:01 in verse 2.
00:08:02 --> 00:08:03 And it's a detour
00:08:03 --> 00:08:08 that lasts until verse 14,
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 when he comes back on track again,
00:08:10 --> 00:08:12 where he says,
00:08:12 --> 00:08:12 for this reason,
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 I knew before the Father.
00:08:15 --> 00:08:16 And so you've got to kind of
00:08:16 --> 00:08:18 hold his train of thought together
00:08:18 --> 00:08:21 while you travel this detour
00:08:21 --> 00:08:21 with Paul
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 in verses 2 to 13.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:27 And he starts in chapter 3,
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 continuing the thought
00:08:28 --> 00:08:29 of chapter 2,
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 but he sort of says,
00:08:32 --> 00:08:32 he gets to verse 2
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 and goes,
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 just hang on a bit.
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 Let me just remind you
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 of the theory again.
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 Let me remind you
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 of God's plan.
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 Let me remind you
00:08:43 --> 00:08:44 of why I'm here in prison
00:08:44 --> 00:08:46 and why the Gentiles,
00:08:47 --> 00:08:47 like you,
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 find yourselves
00:08:48 --> 00:08:50 part of God's eternal family.
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 It's all because
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 of the mystery.
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 It's no longer a mystery.
00:08:58 --> 00:09:00 It's because of the plan
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 that's finally come together.
00:09:02 --> 00:09:04 And as you run down,
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 you get your eyes
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 and you run down
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 verses 2 to 13,
00:09:07 --> 00:09:09 you'll see what Paul does
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 in those verses
00:09:10 --> 00:09:12 is he makes the same point
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 again and again
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 and again and again.
00:09:14 --> 00:09:18 And the point is this.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:22 The plan that wasn't known
00:09:22 --> 00:09:24 is now known.
00:09:24 --> 00:09:25 It's now clear.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:29 The mystery has been made known.
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 What's the mystery?
00:09:31 --> 00:09:32 Verse 6.
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 This mystery
00:09:34 --> 00:09:36 is that through the gospel,
00:09:37 --> 00:09:39 the Gentiles are heirs together
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 with Israel,
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 members together
00:09:41 --> 00:09:43 of one body
00:09:43 --> 00:09:45 and share us together
00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 in the promise
00:09:47 --> 00:09:49 in Christ Jesus.
00:09:49 --> 00:09:53 But that doesn't seem
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 particularly mysterious
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 at all
00:09:55 --> 00:09:58 until we remember
00:09:58 --> 00:10:01 that he's talking
00:10:01 --> 00:10:03 about the crossing
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 of the biggest
00:10:04 --> 00:10:06 ethnic dividing walls
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 that you could ever imagine.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 Centuries
00:10:11 --> 00:10:13 of hatred
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 and hostility
00:10:14 --> 00:10:16 between these two groups.
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 people
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 are not
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 how do you cross
00:10:19 --> 00:10:21 a dividing wall
00:10:21 --> 00:10:21 like that?
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 Paul says
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 that's the mystery
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 and the mystery
00:10:26 --> 00:10:26 is this.
00:10:27 --> 00:10:27 No matter where
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 you come from,
00:10:29 --> 00:10:29 no matter what
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 your colour is,
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 no matter what
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 your ethnic background,
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 no matter how long
00:10:34 --> 00:10:34 you've been
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 in the family,
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 if you've put
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 your faith
00:10:38 --> 00:10:38 in Jesus,
00:10:39 --> 00:10:39 you're all part
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 of the same
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 body,
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 the same family.
00:10:43 --> 00:10:46 the church
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 according to
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 verse 10
00:10:48 --> 00:10:50 is meant to be
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 the display
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 of that
00:10:52 --> 00:10:54 in full
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 technicolour.
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 And there's nothing
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 that Paul wants
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 more than to see
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 this Ephesian church
00:11:04 --> 00:11:06 live out
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 that reality.
00:11:07 --> 00:11:09 And he comes
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 back from his
00:11:10 --> 00:11:10 detour
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 in verse 14.
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 And that
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 is the very
00:11:16 --> 00:11:16 thing that he
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 has moved
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 to pray for.
00:11:20 --> 00:11:20 And verse 14
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 to 21
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 is a long
00:11:22 --> 00:11:22 and pretty
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 complex
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 thought.
00:11:24 --> 00:11:26 But in the end
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 it breaks down
00:11:27 --> 00:11:27 to a very
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 simple
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 prayer.
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 A prayer
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 to the
00:11:32 --> 00:11:32 Father
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 that the
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 Ephesian church
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 might really
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 be a
00:11:37 --> 00:11:39 diverse
00:11:39 --> 00:11:41 and united
00:11:41 --> 00:11:41 family.
00:11:43 --> 00:11:43 And the
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 prayer that
00:11:44 --> 00:11:44 boils down
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 to this
00:11:45 --> 00:11:45 in verse
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 17,
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 so that
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 Christ might
00:11:48 --> 00:11:48 dwell in
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 your hearts
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 through faith
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 and I pray
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 that you
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 being rooted
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 and established
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 in love.
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 Now remember
00:11:57 --> 00:11:57 he's talking
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 about a church
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 made up of
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 Jewish Christians
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 and Gentile
00:12:01 --> 00:12:01 Christians
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 and he prays
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 that Jesus
00:12:03 --> 00:12:04 might so
00:12:04 --> 00:12:06 fill their
00:12:06 --> 00:12:06 hearts
00:12:06 --> 00:12:06 that they
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 might treasure
00:12:07 --> 00:12:07 Jesus
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 together
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 that they
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 will know
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 what true
00:12:11 --> 00:12:11 love looks
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 like from
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 each other.
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 Paul says
00:12:17 --> 00:12:17 in the middle
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 of verse 17
00:12:18 --> 00:12:18 I'm praying
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 that you
00:12:19 --> 00:12:19 being rooted
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 and established
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 in love
00:12:21 --> 00:12:22 may have
00:12:22 --> 00:12:22 power
00:12:22 --> 00:12:24 you Gentiles
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 along with
00:12:25 --> 00:12:25 the Jewish
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 saints
00:12:26 --> 00:12:28 to comprehend
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 what is the
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 breadth
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 and the length
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 and the height
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 and the depth
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 of the love
00:12:34 --> 00:12:34 of Christ
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 and to know
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 the love
00:12:36 --> 00:12:36 of Christ
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 that goes
00:12:37 --> 00:12:39 way beyond
00:12:39 --> 00:12:41 all comprehension.
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 What he's saying
00:12:47 --> 00:12:47 there
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 it doesn't
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 make sense.
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 The world
00:12:52 --> 00:12:52 looks at it
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 it doesn't
00:12:53 --> 00:12:54 make sense.
00:12:54 --> 00:13:01 the love
00:13:01 --> 00:13:01 of Christ
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 encompasses
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 all kinds
00:13:03 --> 00:13:03 of people
00:13:03 --> 00:13:05 and he
00:13:05 --> 00:13:05 says
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 I'm praying
00:13:06 --> 00:13:06 that you
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 will
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 together
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 both Jews
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 and Gentiles
00:13:10 --> 00:13:10 will catch
00:13:10 --> 00:13:11 on
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 to how
00:13:12 --> 00:13:12 big
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 the love
00:13:13 --> 00:13:13 of Jesus
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 is
00:13:14 --> 00:13:14 and be
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 so filled
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 with the
00:13:16 --> 00:13:16 fullness
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 of God
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 he prays
00:13:18 --> 00:13:18 it
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 because
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 the church
00:13:20 --> 00:13:24 is God's
00:13:24 --> 00:13:24 great
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 advertising
00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 campaign
00:13:26 --> 00:13:26 to the
00:13:26 --> 00:13:27 world
00:13:27 --> 00:13:27 of his
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 glory
00:13:28 --> 00:13:32 and yet
00:13:32 --> 00:13:32 friends
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 ever since
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 this letter
00:13:34 --> 00:13:34 is written
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 and when
00:13:35 --> 00:13:35 it was
00:13:35 --> 00:13:35 written
00:13:35 --> 00:13:37 we forget
00:13:37 --> 00:13:37 it
00:13:37 --> 00:13:40 we still
00:13:40 --> 00:13:40 are so
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 tribal
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 in our
00:13:42 --> 00:13:42 thinking
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 we draw
00:13:43 --> 00:13:43 lines
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 who sits
00:13:44 --> 00:13:44 with who
00:13:44 --> 00:13:44 and who
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 won't sit
00:13:45 --> 00:13:45 with who
00:13:45 --> 00:13:47 which family
00:13:47 --> 00:13:47 which tribe
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 which generation
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 people who
00:13:49 --> 00:13:49 have been
00:13:49 --> 00:13:50 part of
00:13:50 --> 00:13:50 the local
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 church
00:13:51 --> 00:13:51 for 50
00:13:51 --> 00:13:51 or 60
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 years
00:13:52 --> 00:13:52 and those
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 who are
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 brand new
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 lines that
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 often won't
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 be crossed
00:13:57 --> 00:13:58 and the
00:13:58 --> 00:13:59 reason is
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 because
00:14:00 --> 00:14:01 we have
00:14:01 --> 00:14:02 not absorbed
00:14:02 --> 00:14:04 how big
00:14:04 --> 00:14:05 the love
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 of Christ
00:14:06 --> 00:14:07 is for us
00:14:07 --> 00:14:10 20 years
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 ago
00:14:11 --> 00:14:11 some of you
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 will remember
00:14:12 --> 00:14:12 that there
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 was a war

00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 Kosovo
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 between the
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 Serbs
00:14:16 --> 00:14:17 and ethnic
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 Albanians
00:14:18 --> 00:14:20 it came
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 on the
00:14:21 --> 00:14:21 back
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 of cultural
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 hatred
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 that ran
00:14:24 --> 00:14:25 back a
00:14:25 --> 00:14:26 thousand
00:14:26 --> 00:14:26 years
00:14:26 --> 00:14:28 and resulted
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 in terrible
00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 crimes against
00:14:30 --> 00:14:31 humanity
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 on both
00:14:32 --> 00:14:32 sides
00:14:32 --> 00:14:35 and there
00:14:35 --> 00:14:35 were Christian
00:14:35 --> 00:14:36 churches
00:14:36 --> 00:14:36 sitting on
00:14:36 --> 00:14:37 both sides
00:14:37 --> 00:14:37 of that
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 conflict
00:14:38 --> 00:14:40 and in
00:14:40 --> 00:14:40 the middle
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 of the
00:14:41 --> 00:14:41 conflict
00:14:41 --> 00:14:43 one pastor
00:14:43 --> 00:14:43 of an
00:14:43 --> 00:14:44 Albanian
00:14:44 --> 00:14:45 Baptist
00:14:45 --> 00:14:46 church
00:14:46 --> 00:14:46 in
00:14:46 --> 00:14:47 Pristinia
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 crossed
00:14:48 --> 00:14:48 over the
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 racial
00:14:49 --> 00:14:49 divide
00:14:49 --> 00:14:51 and preached
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 in a
