00:00:03 --> 00:00:10 I got the standard socks this morning, which declares that apparently I'm number one dad.
00:00:11 --> 00:00:13 So that settles the matter. That's the final word on that.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:20 In fact, I got five pairs that say I am number one dad, so I get to wear them every day at work.
00:00:20 --> 00:00:22 So, yeah, anyway.
00:00:25 --> 00:00:26 Have a great day.
00:00:26 --> 00:00:30 On the screen is one of my prized possessions.
00:00:31 --> 00:00:35 It's a certificate of competency as a powder man.
00:00:36 --> 00:00:38 Now, that's not a license as a makeup artist.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:41 It's, in fact, an explosives license.
00:00:42 --> 00:00:44 And I got that when I was 21.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:49 And I don't know why you're laughing.
00:00:51 --> 00:00:55 I used to wear flannelette shirts before they were famous and before they were fashionable.
00:00:55 --> 00:00:58 In fact, it's when all Bogans wore them.
00:00:59 --> 00:01:02 And so that was many years ago now.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:04 But as soon as I got that license...
00:01:04 --> 00:01:05 Let's go back to the other screen. Oh, good.
00:01:06 --> 00:01:12 As soon as I got that license, I went out and bought 25 kilograms of explosives,
00:01:12 --> 00:01:17 which I was allowed to do because I had a license.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:19 I was a competent powder man.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:23 And my grandmother was visiting at the time that I did this,
00:01:24 --> 00:01:26 and so I wanted to show her my newfound skill.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:31 And so I picked this old dead tree, which is about 300 meters from our house,
00:01:31 --> 00:01:38 and decided that I would show her how to dislodge a tree using explosives.
00:01:38 --> 00:01:42 I calculated the size of the tree and all that sort of stuff.
00:01:42 --> 00:01:45 I needed about four kilograms of explosives,
00:01:45 --> 00:01:50 so I prepared some strategic holes under the tree.
00:01:51 --> 00:01:55 And then I had one of those moments, which you have when you're 21,
00:01:55 --> 00:01:59 of thinking, well, what if four kilograms is not enough?
00:01:59 --> 00:02:04 I knew, for instance, that you couldn't put...
00:02:04 --> 00:02:05 You couldn't do a second blast.
00:02:05 --> 00:02:07 You had one attempt at this.
00:02:07 --> 00:02:10 And so I decided, well, let's just add a little bit more,
00:02:11 --> 00:02:12 just to make sure.
00:02:14 --> 00:02:16 And after topping up the four kilos,
00:02:17 --> 00:02:20 I realised in my bucket of prepared explosives
00:02:20 --> 00:02:22 that I had were just a little bit left over.
00:02:23 --> 00:02:24 And so I put that in too.
00:02:24 --> 00:02:26 And so in the end of it,
00:02:27 --> 00:02:30 I ended up with eight kilos of explosives under this tree,
00:02:31 --> 00:02:33 went out and got my grandmother,
00:02:33 --> 00:02:35 stood her in the position that she needed to be standing.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:40 I went and I lit the fuse, which is a two-minute fuse,
00:02:41 --> 00:02:45 and you hastily walk away from the explosion site at that point.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:47 Don't run, because you might trip over.
00:02:47 --> 00:02:49 You hastily walk away.
00:02:49 --> 00:02:52 And then I got to where my grandmother was,
00:02:52 --> 00:02:54 which was just outside the back door of our house,
00:02:55 --> 00:02:57 and in that moment,
00:02:57 --> 00:03:01 I'm doing what sensible people do,
00:03:01 --> 00:03:04 and you go over the calculations again
00:03:04 --> 00:03:05 to make sure you got it all right.
00:03:06 --> 00:03:07 Now, most sensible people do that
00:03:07 --> 00:03:09 before they've lit the fuse.
00:03:10 --> 00:03:11 But I'm sitting there,
00:03:11 --> 00:03:12 and it was at that moment I thought,
00:03:13 --> 00:03:15 oh, my goodness, there's one calculation I forgot,
00:03:15 --> 00:03:19 and that was the calculation of amount of explosives
00:03:19 --> 00:03:22 compared to distance from the blast site
00:03:22 --> 00:03:23 that you need to be.
00:03:23 --> 00:03:27 And it just went poof.
00:03:27 --> 00:03:29 And what happens is you see it.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:33 Then you hear it, and then you feel it.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:35 That's what happens with an explosion.
00:03:35 --> 00:03:36 It's awesome.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:38 And that's going back to last week.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:39 It truly is awesome.
00:03:39 --> 00:03:45 And so it was at that moment I realised 300 metres from the blast site
00:03:45 --> 00:03:48 is correct for four kilos, but not for eight.
00:03:49 --> 00:03:51 It went off,
00:03:52 --> 00:03:53 and it all...
00:03:54 --> 00:03:56 You know, the tree's on its mission to Mars.
00:03:58 --> 00:04:00 And there's stuff going everywhere.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:03 And then there's this eerie silence.
00:04:05 --> 00:04:07 And then I could start hearing this...
00:04:07 --> 00:04:10 What's that?
00:04:11 --> 00:04:12 It's getting louder.
00:04:13 --> 00:04:16 And it's sounding like it's pretty fast.
00:04:16 --> 00:04:18 And then...
00:04:18 --> 00:04:20 Right!
00:04:20 --> 00:04:22 Five metres from us,
00:04:22 --> 00:04:23 this rock the size of my fist
00:04:23 --> 00:04:25 embedded itself into the ground.
00:04:31 --> 00:04:32 By the grace of God,
00:04:33 --> 00:04:35 I just grabbed a sheet of iron and put it over us.
00:04:36 --> 00:04:36 What else can we do?
00:04:36 --> 00:04:38 My grandma couldn't run to the house.
00:04:38 --> 00:04:39 I mean, it was my first attempt to think,
00:04:40 --> 00:04:40 well, she's lived long.
00:04:40 --> 00:04:41 I mean, it's okay.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:42 You know?
00:04:43 --> 00:04:45 I'm only young, you know?
00:04:45 --> 00:04:46 I've got a lot to live for here.
00:04:46 --> 00:04:47 I could run.
00:04:47 --> 00:04:47 But anyway,
00:04:47 --> 00:04:49 all this stuff comes down.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:51 And just to give you an idea,
00:04:52 --> 00:04:53 a lump of wood,
00:04:53 --> 00:04:55 the size of our communion table behind us here,
00:04:56 --> 00:05:01 landed 300 metres past us.

00:05:05 --> 00:05:07 So it travelled 600...
00:05:07 --> 00:05:10 It landed 600 metres from the blast site
00:05:10 --> 00:05:12 in the neighbour's place.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:16 For it to land 600 metres away,
00:05:16 --> 00:05:17 it goes twice as high.
00:05:18 --> 00:05:21 So it went 1.2 kilometres into the air
00:05:21 --> 00:05:23 and boom!
00:05:24 --> 00:05:25 Into his...
00:05:25 --> 00:05:26 You need a tractor to pull it out
00:05:26 --> 00:05:28 of where it landed.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:31 And it was pretty impressive.
00:05:31 --> 00:05:34 And it was purely by the grace of God
00:05:34 --> 00:05:36 that no one was killed.
00:05:36 --> 00:05:38 No animals were injured
00:05:38 --> 00:05:39 in the whole experiment.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:40 No dents,
00:05:41 --> 00:05:42 no windows were broken,
00:05:42 --> 00:05:43 no cars were dented.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:46 Nothing went wrong at all.
00:05:47 --> 00:05:49 Now, at 21,
00:05:49 --> 00:05:51 I had a certificate of competency
00:05:51 --> 00:05:53 as a powder man,
00:05:53 --> 00:05:55 but I wasn't competent
00:05:55 --> 00:05:57 in regard to the realities of life.
00:05:57 --> 00:06:00 That's a pretty dangerous combination.
00:06:01 --> 00:06:02 Pretty dangerous combination.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:04 The definition of wisdom
00:06:04 --> 00:06:05 that we've been working with
00:06:05 --> 00:06:06 in this series is
00:06:06 --> 00:06:08 is that wisdom is becoming competent
00:06:08 --> 00:06:10 in regard to the realities of life.
00:06:11 --> 00:06:14 Wisdom is more than just pure intellect
00:06:14 --> 00:06:16 and passing exams
00:06:16 --> 00:06:17 and gathering qualifications
00:06:17 --> 00:06:18 such as certificate of competency
00:06:18 --> 00:06:19 as a powder man.
00:06:20 --> 00:06:20 Wisdom is knowing
00:06:20 --> 00:06:22 how things actually are
00:06:22 --> 00:06:23 in this world,
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 how things work in this world,
00:06:25 --> 00:06:25 and how to live
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 in accordance to that.
00:06:28 --> 00:06:29 Now, it's 26 years
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 since I made that decision
00:06:31 --> 00:06:33 and blew up that tree.
00:06:33 --> 00:06:35 And I've got 26 years
00:06:35 --> 00:06:37 more of experience behind me now
00:06:37 --> 00:06:38 and I've still got the license.
00:06:39 --> 00:06:40 I've grown and I've changed.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:41 And if I had exactly
00:06:41 --> 00:06:43 the same opportunity again,
00:06:44 --> 00:06:46 I'd do exactly the same thing.
00:06:46 --> 00:06:47 It was awesome,
00:06:47 --> 00:06:48 let me tell you.
00:06:48 --> 00:06:50 It was fantastic.
00:06:50 --> 00:06:52 I mean, there's nothing like
00:06:52 --> 00:06:53 a great explosion.
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 Except this time,
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 what I'd do is
00:06:56 --> 00:06:57 I'd stand a bit further away.
00:06:57 --> 00:06:58 That's all.
00:06:58 --> 00:07:00 I'd still overload the tree.
00:07:00 --> 00:07:01 I'd still put too much in.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:02 It's just a habit of mine.
00:07:02 --> 00:07:02 I overload, you know.
00:07:03 --> 00:07:05 But I'd just stand further away.
00:07:05 --> 00:07:07 See, making wise choices
00:07:07 --> 00:07:09 is the key to wisdom.
00:07:09 --> 00:07:10 It's one of the key elements,
00:07:10 --> 00:07:11 if you like, to wisdom.
00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 It's not too much to say
00:07:13 --> 00:07:16 that you make or break your life,
00:07:16 --> 00:07:17 or potentially other people's lives,
00:07:17 --> 00:07:20 on the basis of your choices.
00:07:22 --> 00:07:24 There's a whole category of choices
00:07:24 --> 00:07:26 that you don't need a lot of help with.
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 You know, it might be
00:07:29 --> 00:07:31 20% of the choices we face,
00:07:31 --> 00:07:33 you don't need a whole lot of,
00:07:33 --> 00:07:35 you don't need to spend time.
00:07:35 --> 00:07:35 You know, for instance,
00:07:36 --> 00:07:39 you're married or a married person
00:07:39 --> 00:07:41 propositions you to commit adultery
00:07:41 --> 00:07:43 and the things might not be going well
00:07:43 --> 00:07:43 in your own marriage
00:07:43 --> 00:07:45 and this is a very real possibility.
00:07:46 --> 00:07:48 It's not something
00:07:48 --> 00:07:49 you need to pray about.
00:07:50 --> 00:07:51 You don't need to spend time
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 on that work.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 What's the will of God at this point?
00:07:53 --> 00:07:55 He's made it really clear
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 in the Bible.
00:07:56 --> 00:07:56 Don't do it.
00:07:58 --> 00:08:00 But there's about 80% of choices in life
00:08:00 --> 00:08:02 where, is this the right person to hire?
00:08:02 --> 00:08:03 Is this the right career?
00:08:03 --> 00:08:05 Is this the right amount of freedom
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 to give my child in this moment?
00:08:07 --> 00:08:10 Is this the right person
00:08:10 --> 00:08:12 to have confidence in?
00:08:12 --> 00:08:14 Is this the right person to marry?
00:08:14 --> 00:08:16 In those situations,
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 there is a number,
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 multitude of options.
00:08:20 --> 00:08:22 And most of those decisions
00:08:22 --> 00:08:23 are moral,
00:08:24 --> 00:08:26 most of them are legal,
00:08:26 --> 00:08:28 most of them are allowable,
00:08:28 --> 00:08:29 but it doesn't mean that,
00:08:29 --> 00:08:29 therefore,
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 you don't need wisdom
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 in the choice.
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 Yeah, for instance,
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 it is totally legal
00:08:36 --> 00:08:38 and allowable
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 for middle-aged men
00:08:39 --> 00:08:41 to wear these pants.
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 You know,
00:08:43 --> 00:08:45 I didn't break the law
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 when I bought these things.
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 However,
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 Lady Wisdom,
00:08:49 --> 00:08:51 as Proverbs calls her,
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 and in my hand,
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 we call her Natalie,
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 as she suggests,
00:08:57 --> 00:08:59 it is totally,
00:08:59 --> 00:09:01 I should buck the trend
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 of middle-aged men
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 wearing these things
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 without putting shorts
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 over the top of them.
00:09:06 --> 00:09:06 You see,
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 that's what wisdom does.
00:09:09 --> 00:09:11 So we need guidance
00:09:11 --> 00:09:13 to make a whole bunch
00:09:13 --> 00:09:15 of choices in life,
00:09:15 --> 00:09:15 all the decisions
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 that we face
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 where the Bible
00:09:17 --> 00:09:18 is not,
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 you know,
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 black and white on them.
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 We need guidance
00:09:22 --> 00:09:24 to make these wise decisions.
00:09:24 --> 00:09:25 And the Hebrew word
00:09:25 --> 00:09:25 for guidance
00:09:25 --> 00:09:27 occurs a number of times
00:09:27 --> 00:09:27 in Proverbs,
00:09:27 --> 00:09:30 such as in Proverbs 11,
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 verse 3,
00:09:31 --> 00:09:32 where it says,
00:09:32 --> 00:09:32 the integrity
00:09:32 --> 00:09:34 of the upright guides them,
00:09:34 --> 00:09:36 but the unfaithful
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 are destroyed
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 by their duplicity.
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 Now,
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 the word that we translate
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 there into the English
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 word guidance
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 comes from the Hebrew word
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 rope.
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 It's the origin
00:09:48 --> 00:09:48 of the word
00:09:48 --> 00:09:50 is of rope.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:50 There is the idea
00:09:50 --> 00:09:52 of sailing boats.
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 The rope
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 which hoists the sail
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 or lowers the sail
00:09:56 --> 00:09:58 or changes the direction
00:09:58 --> 00:09:58 of the sail.
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 It carries the concept
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 of navigation
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 to it.
00:10:04 --> 00:10:04 And so that's
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 what we're facing here.

00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 with all these choices
00:10:12 --> 00:10:14 about is it this way
00:10:14 --> 00:10:14 or that way?
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 That's what we're
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 going to look at
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 very briefly.
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 And I suspect
00:10:20 --> 00:10:20 by the time
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 we finish the day
00:10:21 --> 00:10:21 you're going to be
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 frustrated.
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 Just give your heads

00:10:56 --> 00:10:56 with my type
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 of personality.

00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 into the lap

00:11:05 --> 00:11:07 is from the Lord.

00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 there is equivalent
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 to what we might
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 call rolling a dice
