00:00:14 --> 00:00:23 Father, these words belong to you, and we believe that you speak to us today by your
00:00:23 --> 00:00:31 spirit, and we pray, Father, that these words might cut us deep inside of us, so they might
00:00:31 --> 00:00:40 change us. We pray that through our hearing of your word, that Jesus' name would be honoured
00:00:40 --> 00:00:52 among us and among the nations, so that all glory might go to you, and we pray this in
00:00:52 --> 00:01:00 Jesus' name. Amen. Years ago, I was involved in a beach mission to a little place called
00:01:00 --> 00:01:10 Windang down the south coast. Yeah? You know Windang? Yeah, it's a pretty dirty little town,
00:01:10 --> 00:01:17 if I could say so. High youth unemployment. It's the first time that I've met Satan worshippers,
00:01:17 --> 00:01:27 and it was really interesting. I was involved with the mission to the adults. There was a,
00:01:27 --> 00:01:31 somebody was giving a talk, and I think it was a heroin addict and dealer and all that sort
00:01:31 --> 00:01:35 of stuff, and at the end of it all, one of the young blokes sort of stood up and said,
00:01:35 --> 00:01:44 you know, I'll believe you if your God comes down and he lights my cigarette. He was going
00:01:44 --> 00:01:48 to say something else, but he thought, you know, he didn't want to offend our Christian
00:01:48 --> 00:01:56 sensitivity. And there was a very interesting proposition to prove the truthfulness of the
00:01:56 --> 00:02:03 gospel. Of course, we were unable to do it, and he left. It might very well be a good question,
00:02:03 --> 00:02:14 and that is, how do we show our peers, people around us, God? Where is our God to be found?
00:02:16 --> 00:02:22 That might be a question for non-Christians, but it might be a question for Christians as well,
00:02:22 --> 00:02:29 too. If you're going through a hard time, difficult patch in your life, you might be asking this
00:02:29 --> 00:02:36 question, well, where is God to be found? Do I need to storm heaven in order to see God?
00:02:37 --> 00:02:46 We see today that there are two significant problems, two significant problems for the presence
00:02:46 --> 00:02:57 of God. The first one is the corruption of his people. That is how our passage begins.
00:02:57 --> 00:03:07 God's people is just terrible. There's nothing to command God's people, and we can see that
00:03:07 --> 00:03:19 the corruption of his people starts from its head, and we can see that in chapter 56, the last few verses.
00:03:19 --> 00:03:21 Verse 10,
00:03:21 --> 00:03:27 Come, all you beasts of the field, come and devour all you beasts of the forest. So it is an invitation to summon
00:03:27 --> 00:03:35 by God to the animals to consume his people. Why? Verse 10, Israel's watchmen are blind.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:42 They all lack knowledge. They are like mute dogs. They can't bark. They lie around, dream, scratch their
00:03:42 --> 00:03:48 tummies. They love to sleep. They're dogs with mighty appetites. They never have enough. They're shepherds who lack
00:03:48 --> 00:03:56 understanding, or they all turn to their own way. Each seeks his own gain. Come, each one cries. Let me get
00:03:56 --> 00:04:00 wine. Let us drink our fill of beer, and tomorrow we'll be like today, or even better.
00:04:02 --> 00:04:12 A terrible picture of what Israel is like. The head is corrupt. Verse 10, the watchmen of Israel.
00:04:12 --> 00:04:19 I mean, who were the watchmen presumably in that time? You've got fortress, fortified cities,
00:04:20 --> 00:04:27 and people were assigned to care for the city by warning the city of its danger. The watchmen,
00:04:27 --> 00:04:36 you know, they stand at the turrets and watch for impending danger. It's a great, one of the,
00:04:36 --> 00:04:45 I imagine, prerequisite of being a watchmen is that you have good eyesight. I couldn't be a good watchman
00:04:45 --> 00:04:52 because I've got terrible eyesight. But these watchmen, the watchmen of Israel, they were blind.
00:04:52 --> 00:05:03 They couldn't see. How could they possibly save Israel from danger? They were ignorant and they were lazy.
00:05:04 --> 00:05:13 And unlike me, who's got a genetic thing with my eyesight, these people were willfully blind. They were
00:05:13 --> 00:05:21 deliberately ignorant. And we can see the source of their ignorance and blindness in verses 11 and 12.
00:05:21 --> 00:05:34 They were ignorant and they were blind because they love so much. They were lovers. They love their work.
00:05:34 --> 00:05:41 They love their families. They love themselves. They comfort their ambitions, their hobbies. They love their drink.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:48 They love everything except for the people they were supposed to love and protect.
00:05:48 --> 00:06:00 And as a result, the people of God is devout. It is a sick head, but the body is equally sick.
00:06:00 --> 00:06:04 Have a look at chapter 57.
00:06:04 --> 00:06:16 The righteous perish and no one ponders it in his heart. Devout men are taken away and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil.
00:06:16 --> 00:06:21 Those who walk uprightly, however, enter into peace. They find rest as they lie in death.
00:06:21 --> 00:06:29 You know, the whole place is so bad that even when the little good disappears, no one notices.
00:06:30 --> 00:06:34 This is how bad things were. And the accusation becomes more direct.
00:06:34 --> 00:06:41 But you, not just the head, but the body, you, everyone, come here, you sons of a sorceress,
00:06:42 --> 00:06:45 you offspring of adulterers and prostitutes.
00:06:45 --> 00:06:50 Whom are you mocking? At whom do you sneer and stick out your tongue?
00:06:50 --> 00:06:53 Are you not a brood of rebels, offspring of liars?
00:06:54 --> 00:06:57 You burn with lust among the oaks and under every spreading tree.
00:06:57 --> 00:07:01 You sacrifice your children in the ravines and under the overhanging crags.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:05 The idol among the smooth stones of the ravines, they are your portion.
00:07:06 --> 00:07:07 They are your lot.
00:07:07 --> 00:07:12 Yes, to them you have poured out drink offerings and offered grain offerings.
00:07:12 --> 00:07:15 In the light of these things, should I relent?
00:07:15 --> 00:07:17 Et cetera, et cetera.
00:07:18 --> 00:07:21 This is what the people of God is like.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:27 They are children of sorceress and prostitutes and adulterers.
00:07:28 --> 00:07:31 It's not so much an indictment on their parents.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:34 It's really talking about what they are like.
00:07:34 --> 00:07:41 So if you are a son of rebellion, it's not saying that rebellion gives birth to you,
00:07:41 --> 00:07:43 but you have the characteristic.
00:07:43 --> 00:07:45 You have the family trait of rebellion.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 So in other words, you are a rebel.
00:07:47 --> 00:07:49 If you are...
00:07:49 --> 00:07:53 So these people, they are children of unfaithfulness.
00:07:54 --> 00:07:58 They are characterized by their unworthiness, their unfaithfulness.
00:07:59 --> 00:08:01 They are spiritually promiscuous.
00:08:02 --> 00:08:03 They are sons of liars.
00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 They are people who are deceitful.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:07 They lie.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:08 They mock.
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 They stick their tang out.
00:08:12 --> 00:08:14 At God, presumably.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 At the righteous.
00:08:17 --> 00:08:20 Mind you, it is not that they are irreligious.
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 Have a look at verses 5 to 8 again.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:27 This is a people full of religion.
00:08:27 --> 00:08:32 But they sacrifice to idols.
00:08:33 --> 00:08:38 Religion is everywhere, from on top of the mountain to the ravines.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:42 They sacrifice everything, even their children.
00:08:42 --> 00:08:46 In verses 9 and 10, we are told that they went down to Molech,
00:08:47 --> 00:08:50 and they send their ambassadors to afar.
00:08:50 --> 00:08:56 They were so eager to seek out their spiritual lovers that they will go far and wide.
00:08:57 --> 00:09:05 Later on, God accused them to acknowledge the futility and the hopelessness of their idolatry,
00:09:05 --> 00:09:09 something that they refused to see.
00:09:09 --> 00:09:13 They just don't see that as a complete waste of time and effort.
00:09:13 --> 00:09:17 And they keep going back to their idols, hoping to get something from them.
00:09:17 --> 00:09:31 Of course, just as an interlude, we might observe that this is not just what the people of God did thousands of years ago.
00:09:31 --> 00:09:35 It's something that we are engaged in in our own time.
00:09:35 --> 00:09:45 In our city, Christians, and maybe even our church, that we prostitute ourselves to our idols.
00:09:46 --> 00:09:50 I don't know whether I mentioned this before.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:56 It is interesting the way Isaiah describes their idols.
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 Have a look at verse 11.
00:09:58 --> 00:10:04 Whom have you so dreaded and feared that you have been false to me,
00:10:04 --> 00:10:07 and have neither remembered me, nor pondered this in your hearts?
00:10:08 --> 00:10:11 Is it not because I have long been silent that you do not fear me?
00:10:12 --> 00:10:16 The motivation for their idolatry was, in fact, fear.
00:10:17 --> 00:10:19 Whom have you so dreaded and feared?
00:10:20 --> 00:10:22 I can't remember when I said this in this congregation.
00:10:22 --> 00:10:32 The way that you can tell what you worship is by what you fear.
00:10:34 --> 00:10:39 Whatever you have nightmares about, that is the thing that you worship.
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 That is your God.
00:10:42 --> 00:10:50 If you're afraid of being alone, if you're afraid of losing your financial security,
00:10:50 --> 00:10:52 if whatever it is that you're afraid of, that is your God.
00:10:53 --> 00:10:56 And we prostitute ourselves to our gods.
00:10:56 --> 00:10:59 We sell our souls for all sorts of things.
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 For pleasure.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 For a relationship.
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 For approval.
00:11:03 --> 00:11:06 For a pat on the back by our boss.
00:11:06 --> 00:11:08 For applause from our peers.
00:11:08 --> 00:11:11 We even place our children on the altar, as it were,
00:11:12 --> 00:11:15 and sacrifice them to the God of success.
00:11:15 --> 00:11:20 I come from a culture where people would send the, you know,
00:11:20 --> 00:11:23 there was someone in my church, previous church,
00:11:23 --> 00:11:27 who offered to coach my four-year-old, Maths.
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 And I thought about taking her on her offer.
00:11:36 --> 00:11:40 We put our children on the altar of success.
00:11:40 --> 00:11:45 Not just academic, but sporting, or their self-esteem, their popularity.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:49 And we might ask the question,
00:11:50 --> 00:11:52 when we sacrifice to our idols,
00:11:53 --> 00:11:58 when we lay ourselves and our future and our children on those altars,
00:11:59 --> 00:12:01 we better make sure that it's worth it.
00:12:02 --> 00:12:06 You know, when you make that decision to go out with that non-Christian boy or girl,
00:12:06 --> 00:12:15 you better make sure that you're selling your soul for something that is worthwhile.
00:12:16 --> 00:12:19 He better be worth it for your soul.
00:12:22 --> 00:12:24 That's an enormous problem, isn't it?
00:12:24 --> 00:12:29 That the people of God could be so corrupt from the top to the bottom.
00:12:29 --> 00:12:32 But there is a bigger problem.
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 There is a bigger problem.
00:12:33 --> 00:12:36 And it's a little bit subtle.
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 It's a little bit hard to notice.
00:12:38 --> 00:12:40 And I might need to point it out for you to...
00:12:41 --> 00:12:44 The bigger problem here is the context.
00:12:45 --> 00:12:46 It's the context.
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 Why is that a problem?
00:12:51 --> 00:12:51 It's hard.
00:12:52 --> 00:12:54 I know it's hard when we go through from week to week.
00:12:55 --> 00:12:57 Isaiah, it sort of all gets a bit lost.
00:12:57 --> 00:12:57 We don't know when...
00:12:58 --> 00:13:00 Just to refresh your memory,
00:13:00 --> 00:13:02 Isaiah, the book itself, is divided,
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 or could be divided into two parts.
00:13:04 --> 00:13:07 The first part is really looking at the impending judgment of God
00:13:07 --> 00:13:09 for the idolatry of Israel.
00:13:10 --> 00:13:12 That's the first part, first 39 chapters.
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 God warns his people,
00:13:15 --> 00:13:19 if you don't quit your idolatry and prostituting and all this stuff,
00:13:19 --> 00:13:21 I'm going to come and smash you.
00:13:21 --> 00:13:23 And I'm going to give you a warning.
00:13:24 --> 00:13:26 This is what's going to happen to the Northern Kingdom.
00:13:26 --> 00:13:28 The Assyrians are going to come,
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 and they're going to smash the North.
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 And that's what happened.
00:13:30 --> 00:13:32 But I'm going to spare you, the South Jerusalem,
00:13:33 --> 00:13:35 from this, but you need to turn.
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 They didn't.
00:13:37 --> 00:13:40 And God says, what I'm going to do is I'm going to send something worse than the Assyrians,
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 the Babylonians.
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 They're going to come,
00:13:43 --> 00:13:46 and they're going to destroy everything that represents me.
00:13:47 --> 00:13:49 They're going to come and destroy the temple,
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 the symbolic presence,
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 my presence,
00:13:53 --> 00:13:56 and they're going to take you away from the land,
00:13:56 --> 00:13:59 the symbol of my blessing and protection to you.
00:13:59 --> 00:14:04 Everything that reminds you of me is going to be taken away from you.
00:14:04 --> 00:14:06 A little bit like Eden, you remember.
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 Genesis chapter 3,
00:14:09 --> 00:14:12 Adam and Eve cast out from the garden.
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 They're not allowed to return
00:14:14 --> 00:14:16 because there's an angel with a flaming sword.
00:14:18 --> 00:14:18 Everything,
00:14:19 --> 00:14:21 the people of God will be cast out once again,
00:14:22 --> 00:14:24 exiled from the presence of God.
00:14:24 --> 00:14:27 That's the first 39 chapters,
00:14:28 --> 00:14:30 but that's not the end of the book.
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 There's the second part of Isaiah.
00:14:33 --> 00:14:34 There will be a return,
00:14:35 --> 00:14:37 a return from exile.
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 There will be salvation.
00:14:39 --> 00:14:41 The people would come back to the land,
00:14:41 --> 00:14:44 the temple would be rebuilt on Zion,
00:14:44 --> 00:14:47 and the nations would come stream to Zion.
00:14:48 --> 00:14:50 This is the second part of the book.
00:14:52 --> 00:14:53 Where is chapter 57 in?
00:14:54 --> 00:14:58 The second part of the book.
00:14:59 --> 00:15:02 It sounds a lot like the first part of the book.
00:15:03 --> 00:15:03 Doesn't it?
00:15:05 --> 00:15:06 Here's the people of God
00:15:06 --> 00:15:09 being accused of exactly the same thing
00:15:09 --> 00:15:12 before the Babylonian exile.
00:15:14 --> 00:15:17 They're going back to their old ways.
00:15:18 --> 00:15:22 It reminds me a little bit
00:15:22 --> 00:15:24 of what happened to Noah.
00:15:24 --> 00:15:25 You remember.
00:15:26 --> 00:15:26 You know,
00:15:26 --> 00:15:28 God was sick of the wickedness
00:15:28 --> 00:15:31 and the evil of our race,
00:15:31 --> 00:15:32 the human race,
00:15:32 --> 00:15:32 and he said,
00:15:33 --> 00:15:34 I'm going to wipe out everyone,
00:15:35 --> 00:15:36 but I'm going to save Noah.
00:15:37 --> 00:15:38 I'm going to save Noah
00:15:38 --> 00:15:40 and create a new people out of him.
00:15:41 --> 00:15:42 So everything on the face of the earth
00:15:42 --> 00:15:44 was wiped out,
00:15:44 --> 00:15:46 except for Noah and his family,
00:15:46 --> 00:15:47 the righteous man.
00:15:47 --> 00:15:49 And God says,
00:15:49 --> 00:15:50 I'm going to make a promise to you.
00:15:51 --> 00:15:52 I'm not going to destroy the earth
00:15:52 --> 00:15:55 by flood water ever again.
00:15:56 --> 00:15:57 Even though,
00:15:57 --> 00:15:59 this is Genesis chapter 8, 21.
00:15:59 --> 00:16:00 Do you remember what he says?
00:16:01 --> 00:16:06 Even though every inclination of his heart
00:16:06 --> 00:16:09 is evil from youth.
00:16:09 --> 00:16:12 Everything,
00:16:12 --> 00:16:13 every inclination,
00:16:14 --> 00:16:15 everything that you desire,
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 your proclivities,
00:16:18 --> 00:16:18 everything,
00:16:19 --> 00:16:20 is evil
00:16:20 --> 00:16:23 from when you were a child.
00:16:23 --> 00:16:27 The judgment of God,
00:16:27 --> 00:16:27 it seems,
00:16:28 --> 00:16:29 did not solve the problem.
00:16:30 --> 00:16:33 The earth was almost destroyed,
00:16:34 --> 00:16:36 but what did not change
00:16:36 --> 00:16:40 was the human heart.
00:16:42 --> 00:16:43 And there it is.
00:16:43 --> 00:16:44 Again, here,
00:16:45 --> 00:16:47 the exile of God's people
00:16:47 --> 00:16:49 to a foreign land,
00:16:49 --> 00:16:51 everything that represents God
00:16:51 --> 00:16:52 is taken away from them.
00:16:52 --> 00:16:54 They brought back into the land.
00:16:55 --> 00:16:56 Did that change their heart?
00:16:58 --> 00:16:59 Clearly not.
00:17:00 --> 00:17:03 From the head to the toe,
00:17:04 --> 00:17:05 still sick.
00:17:06 --> 00:17:08 Something has to be done.
00:17:09 --> 00:17:12 Something much more dramatic
00:17:12 --> 00:17:15 than an exile and a return.
00:17:18 --> 00:17:21 Which takes us to chapter 57,
00:17:21 --> 00:17:22 verse 14.
00:17:23 --> 00:17:24 The highlight,
00:17:24 --> 00:17:25 in my view,
00:17:25 --> 00:17:26 of our passage.
00:17:28 --> 00:17:30 The Lord says,
00:17:30 --> 00:17:31 and it will be said
00:17:31 --> 00:17:33 on a day in the future,
00:17:34 --> 00:17:35 build up,
00:17:36 --> 00:17:36 build up,
00:17:37 --> 00:17:38 prepare the road,
00:17:39 --> 00:17:40 remove the obstacles
00:17:40 --> 00:17:41 out of the way
00:17:41 --> 00:17:42 of my people.
00:17:43 --> 00:17:45 There will be a great
00:17:45 --> 00:17:45 returning.
00:17:45 --> 00:17:46 returning.
00:17:47 --> 00:17:48 Instead of turning away
00:17:48 --> 00:17:49 from God,
00:17:49 --> 00:17:50 people,
00:17:50 --> 00:17:51 his people will now
00:17:51 --> 00:17:53 turn to God.
00:17:54 --> 00:17:55 But there is a greater
00:17:55 --> 00:17:57 reversal in 15.
00:17:58 --> 00:17:59 And this was,
00:17:59 --> 00:18:01 this verse just blew me away
00:18:01 --> 00:18:03 during the course of this week
00:18:03 --> 00:18:03 when I read it.
00:18:03 --> 00:18:05 So come and have a look at it.
00:18:05 --> 00:18:06 It says,
00:18:06 --> 00:18:06 for,
00:18:07 --> 00:18:08 for,
00:18:08 --> 00:18:08 because,
00:18:09 --> 00:18:10 this is what the high
00:18:10 --> 00:18:11 and lofty one says,
00:18:12 --> 00:18:12 he who lives
00:18:12 --> 00:18:14 in eternity,
00:18:14 --> 00:18:16 whose name is holy,
00:18:16 --> 00:18:17 I live in a high
00:18:17 --> 00:18:18 and holy place,
00:18:19 --> 00:18:19 but,
00:18:20 --> 00:18:21 also with him
00:18:21 --> 00:18:22 who is contrite
00:18:22 --> 00:18:24 and lowly in spirit.
00:18:24 --> 00:18:25 I live with him
00:18:25 --> 00:18:26 to revive the spirit
00:18:26 --> 00:18:27 of the lowly
00:18:27 --> 00:18:28 and to revive the heart
00:18:28 --> 00:18:30 of the contrite.
00:18:30 --> 00:18:32 This is the other
00:18:32 --> 00:18:33 great reversal.
00:18:33 --> 00:18:34 Did you notice
00:18:34 --> 00:18:35 how God is described?
00:18:36 --> 00:18:37 High
00:18:37 --> 00:18:38 and lofty,
00:18:38 --> 00:18:39 dwelling
00:18:39 --> 00:18:40 in eternity.
00:18:43 --> 00:18:44 When I was teaching
00:18:44 --> 00:18:45 scripture,
00:18:45 --> 00:18:47 I get this question
00:18:47 --> 00:18:47 a lot,
00:18:47 --> 00:18:48 and I think I got this
00:18:48 --> 00:18:49 question from one
00:18:49 --> 00:18:49 of my daughters.
00:18:50 --> 00:18:51 The question is,
00:18:51 --> 00:18:53 who created God?
00:18:54 --> 00:18:55 Have you ever got that one?
00:18:55 --> 00:18:57 Who created God?
00:18:57 --> 00:18:57 Do you know why
00:18:57 --> 00:18:58 they ask this question?
00:18:58 --> 00:19:02 Because it is impossible
00:19:02 --> 00:19:04 for us who do not dwell
00:19:04 --> 00:19:05 in eternity
00:19:05 --> 00:19:07 to imagine one
00:19:07 --> 00:19:08 who has no beginning
00:19:08 --> 00:19:09 and no ending.
00:19:13 --> 00:19:13 Therefore,
00:19:14 --> 00:19:15 God must have been created
00:19:15 --> 00:19:17 like we are.
00:19:18 --> 00:19:19 God who dwells
00:19:19 --> 00:19:20 in eternity,
00:19:21 --> 00:19:22 who has no beginning,
00:19:22 --> 00:19:24 so no one created him,
00:19:24 --> 00:19:25 and who has no ending,
00:19:25 --> 00:19:26 so that no one
00:19:26 --> 00:19:27 will judge him.
00:19:28 --> 00:19:29 He is the
00:19:29 --> 00:19:30 holy one.
00:19:31 --> 00:19:32 The holy one.
00:19:32 --> 00:19:33 You know,
00:19:33 --> 00:19:34 in the Old Testament,
00:19:34 --> 00:19:35 there's the temple
00:19:35 --> 00:19:37 divided into all
00:19:37 --> 00:19:38 these sections,
00:19:38 --> 00:19:39 and,
00:19:39 --> 00:19:39 you know,
00:19:39 --> 00:19:40 there are all these
00:19:40 --> 00:19:41 rituals associated
00:19:41 --> 00:19:42 with the temple.
00:19:42 --> 00:19:43 There's blood
00:19:43 --> 00:19:44 everywhere,
00:19:44 --> 00:19:45 splatters,
00:19:45 --> 00:19:45 you know,
00:19:45 --> 00:19:46 and every time
00:19:46 --> 00:19:47 somebody comes
00:19:47 --> 00:19:47 near the temple,
00:19:48 --> 00:19:49 something has to die.
00:19:50 --> 00:19:51 You know,
00:19:51 --> 00:19:52 imagine that sort
00:19:52 --> 00:19:52 of church.
00:19:52 --> 00:19:55 and right in front
00:19:55 --> 00:19:56 of this temple,
00:19:56 --> 00:19:56 you know,
00:19:57 --> 00:19:57 if we were to put
00:19:57 --> 00:19:58 a sign there,
