00:00:35 --> 00:00:38 There is just so much of you for us to discover.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:43 God, we pray tonight that as we look at Jesus, as we look at the Son,
00:00:44 --> 00:00:47 that you would give us eyes to see him clearly,
00:00:47 --> 00:00:50 that you would enable us to understand what it is we're wrestling with,
00:00:50 --> 00:00:54 but more importantly, that as we see him, that it would affect us
00:00:54 --> 00:00:56 and the people that you have made us to be.
00:00:56 --> 00:00:57 Amen.
00:00:58 --> 00:01:03 I have to confess that writing this series that we've been working through for the last few weeks
00:01:03 --> 00:01:07 and that we're going through for the next couple of weeks has been a fairly difficult task.
00:01:08 --> 00:01:10 Not because I didn't want to write this series.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:12 I was involved in the decision to do it.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:17 But we are trying to take a look at God.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:22 We are trying to focus in and understand the distinction that is in God,
00:01:22 --> 00:01:24 the Father and the Son and the Spirit.
00:01:24 --> 00:01:29 Later on in this series, we will focus more in on the oneness of God.
00:01:29 --> 00:01:32 But at the moment, we're trying to emphasize the distinction.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:38 And so we've got a distinction that's there, but at the same time, we've got a unity.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:41 And so I found myself trying to write a sermon today
00:01:41 --> 00:01:46 and feeling like I was saying a lot of things that I said last week that were also true of the Father.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:51 And that is both the challenge and the wonder of God that there is distinction there
00:01:51 --> 00:01:58 and that distinction is important, but that that distinction exists in a perfect unity somehow.
00:02:00 --> 00:02:03 Thankfully, as it's getting more difficult, I've handballed next week to the bishop
00:02:03 --> 00:02:08 so he can struggle to come up with fresh stuff as we look at the Spirit next week.
00:02:08 --> 00:02:14 But despite the difficulty in wrestling with this, the facts are the testimony of Scripture
00:02:14 --> 00:02:17 is that our God is Father, Son and Spirit.
00:02:17 --> 00:02:19 And those distinctions are there.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:20 They exist.
00:02:21 --> 00:02:22 So it's worth trying to understand them.
00:02:23 --> 00:02:26 They wouldn't be there if they didn't matter or if they weren't helpful
00:02:26 --> 00:02:28 or if they didn't make a difference to us knowing God.
00:02:28 --> 00:02:31 And so it is worth us wrestling with them.
00:02:32 --> 00:02:34 Now, just like last week, I want to begin this week
00:02:34 --> 00:02:39 by telling you four things that we believe to be true as Christians.
00:02:39 --> 00:02:40 Firstly, there is one God.
00:02:41 --> 00:02:44 Secondly, that God is three persons, Father, Son and Spirit.
00:02:45 --> 00:02:52 Thirdly, each member of that Trinity is equally God, eternally God and fully God.
00:02:52 --> 00:02:58 And lastly, each member of that Trinity is a distinct personal expression
00:02:58 --> 00:03:01 of the one undivided nature.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:04 Now, if that sounds a lot and complicated, you're right.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:09 God as Trinity is something that is incomprehensible, but it's important.
00:03:10 --> 00:03:12 It's something that is not easy, but it's true.
00:03:13 --> 00:03:15 And so we're going to wrestle with it.
00:03:15 --> 00:03:18 Last week, we looked at God the Father, as Janet's already reminded us.
00:03:18 --> 00:03:22 We were confronted with His supremacy in all things.
00:03:22 --> 00:03:26 We were encouraged with His abundant love towards the Son and the Spirit
00:03:26 --> 00:03:27 and, of course, to us as well.
00:03:27 --> 00:03:34 And we were encouraged that He includes the Son and the Spirit in the Father's work
00:03:34 --> 00:03:38 and we have the joy of being included in His work as well.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:40 But today, we get to the Son.
00:03:41 --> 00:03:45 What is it that makes God the Son distinct?
00:03:46 --> 00:03:51 Now, again, I want to qualify this sermon like I have so far to say that what we're going to look at tonight
00:03:51 --> 00:03:52 isn't everything.
00:03:52 --> 00:03:53 It's not exhaustive.
00:03:53 --> 00:03:56 It's not the whole list on God the Son,
00:03:56 --> 00:04:00 but it's a few things that I think might help us in understanding God the Son
00:04:00 --> 00:04:03 and how that affects us having a relationship with our God,
00:04:04 --> 00:04:05 who is Father, Son, and Spirit.
00:04:06 --> 00:04:08 So keep John chapter 1 in front of you
00:04:08 --> 00:04:13 and we're going to try and look at four things that I believe John chapter 1 teaches us
00:04:13 --> 00:04:14 about God the Son.
00:04:16 --> 00:04:19 Firstly, and maybe this is a bit obvious,
00:04:20 --> 00:04:24 what makes God the Son God the Son is that He shows up.
00:04:25 --> 00:04:28 What makes Him unique from the Father and the Spirit
00:04:28 --> 00:04:32 is that the Son is the one who becomes a man.
00:04:32 --> 00:04:34 The Son is the one who becomes human.
00:04:35 --> 00:04:36 God wants to be known.
00:04:36 --> 00:04:37 The Father wants us to know Him.
00:04:38 --> 00:04:39 In John chapter 1, we read this.
00:04:40 --> 00:04:40 Verse 1,
00:04:41 --> 00:04:42 In the beginning was the Word,
00:04:42 --> 00:04:43 and the Word was with God,
00:04:43 --> 00:04:45 and the Word was God.
00:04:45 --> 00:04:47 Down to verse 14,
00:04:47 --> 00:04:50 The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:52 We have seen His glory,
00:04:52 --> 00:04:53 the glory of the one and only,
00:04:53 --> 00:04:55 who came from the Father,
00:04:55 --> 00:04:57 full of grace and truth.
00:04:57 --> 00:04:59 John goes on in this little section that was read out
00:04:59 --> 00:05:00 to make it really clear,
00:05:00 --> 00:05:01 if we've missed,
00:05:01 --> 00:05:03 because it's kind of some circular language,
00:05:04 --> 00:05:07 that the Word in flesh is Jesus.
00:05:08 --> 00:05:11 The point of this first chapter of John's Gospel is to say,
00:05:11 --> 00:05:13 Jesus is more than an impressive guy.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:15 He's more than just a miracle worker.
00:05:15 --> 00:05:17 He is God.
00:05:18 --> 00:05:20 Now, when we talk about God the Son,
00:05:20 --> 00:05:23 we never mean less than Jesus,
00:05:24 --> 00:05:29 but this part of John 1 tells us that we mean more than Jesus.
00:05:30 --> 00:05:30 I'll say that again.
00:05:31 --> 00:05:32 When we're talking about God the Son,
00:05:32 --> 00:05:34 we never mean less than Jesus,
00:05:34 --> 00:05:38 but we actually are talking about more than the man Jesus.
00:05:39 --> 00:05:43 Because God the Son was there before Jesus was born.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 It's there in John in the first verse.
00:05:45 --> 00:05:46 In the beginning was the Word,
00:05:46 --> 00:05:47 the Word was with God,
00:05:48 --> 00:05:49 and the Word was God.
00:05:49 --> 00:05:51 God the Son who becomes Jesus was there
00:05:51 --> 00:05:53 when God the Father was creating.
00:05:53 --> 00:05:56 In fact, John 1 tells us that it was through Him
00:05:56 --> 00:05:58 that creation happened.
00:05:58 --> 00:05:59 Verse 3,
00:05:59 --> 00:06:00 Through Him all things were made.
00:06:00 --> 00:06:03 Without Him nothing was made that has been made.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:06 God the Son is more than just the man Jesus.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:08 He is eternal.
00:06:08 --> 00:06:09 He was there in the beginning.
00:06:10 --> 00:06:11 He always was.
00:06:11 --> 00:06:14 Part of who God is is that He never begun.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:15 He never started.
00:06:15 --> 00:06:18 And so God the Son too is fully God
00:06:18 --> 00:06:20 and has no beginning.
00:06:20 --> 00:06:22 What happened 2 years ago
00:06:22 --> 00:06:24 and gave us a public holiday in December
00:06:24 --> 00:06:26 was not the beginning of God the Son.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:28 It was His arrival.
00:06:29 --> 00:06:32 It was His showing up so that we might see Him.
00:06:32 --> 00:06:35 And so Jesus' birth in the manger is significant,
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 but it's not the beginning.
00:06:36 --> 00:06:40 It's the showing up of God in human form.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:44 Now don't let the significance of that slip by you.
00:06:45 --> 00:06:47 I'm not saying the incarnation is less impressive
00:06:47 --> 00:06:49 because God the Son always was.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:52 It actually makes it more important.
00:06:53 --> 00:06:55 When you understand that God the Son is eternal
00:06:55 --> 00:06:58 and all-knowing and all-powerful,
00:06:58 --> 00:07:00 it's the Philippians passage that was read out for us.
00:07:00 --> 00:07:02 It's poetic in that it shows this movement.
00:07:03 --> 00:07:06 God the Son is in very nature God.
00:07:06 --> 00:07:07 He is God.
00:07:07 --> 00:07:10 He is eternal, powerful, majestic, creator.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:13 And in the birth of Jesus,
00:07:13 --> 00:07:17 He enters into human history for our sake.
00:07:18 --> 00:07:21 I mean, we get very excited around Easter
00:07:21 --> 00:07:24 and rightfully so as we look at the death of Jesus.
00:07:24 --> 00:07:30 But the birth of Jesus is easily as significant.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:37 The eternal God becomes a man when Jesus is born.
00:07:38 --> 00:07:42 I have said in sermons before that Christmas exists for Easter.
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 What I'm getting at by that, obviously,
00:07:44 --> 00:07:46 is that Jesus came because He was going to die.
00:07:46 --> 00:07:49 But that plays down just how significant it is
00:07:49 --> 00:07:52 that God would enter into human history.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:55 That the one who sits over all creation,
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 the one who, it says, He created everything
00:07:57 --> 00:07:59 and without Him nothing was made,
00:08:00 --> 00:08:02 the fact that He would become a creature
00:08:02 --> 00:08:06 is more than significant.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:10 God the Son has this unique role within the Trinity
00:08:10 --> 00:08:13 of being sent by the Father to become a man
00:08:13 --> 00:08:17 so that we might call God the Father our Father.
00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 First thing that we need to grab about God the Son
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 is that He shows up.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:27 Second thing, God the Son reveals.
00:08:28 --> 00:08:29 The Son here in John chapter 1
00:08:29 --> 00:08:31 is shown to be the revealer of God.
00:08:32 --> 00:08:34 His task is to point us to God.
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 Verse 18,
00:08:35 --> 00:08:37 No one has ever seen God,
00:08:37 --> 00:08:40 but God the one and only that's talking about Jesus
00:08:40 --> 00:08:43 who is at the Father's side has made Him known.
00:08:43 --> 00:08:44 And maybe even more significantly,
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 if you skip back to verse 11,
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 He came to that which was His own.
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 His own did not receive Him.
00:08:50 --> 00:08:53 Yet, to all who received Him,
00:08:53 --> 00:08:55 to those who believed in His name,
00:08:56 --> 00:08:58 He gave the right to become children of God.
00:08:59 --> 00:09:01 Children born not of natural descent,
00:09:01 --> 00:09:03 nor of human decision or a husband's will,
00:09:03 --> 00:09:05 but born of God.
00:09:07 --> 00:09:09 The Son reveals the Father
00:09:09 --> 00:09:12 so that we can become children of God.
00:09:13 --> 00:09:16 Before the Son comes and points us to the Father,
00:09:17 --> 00:09:19 we cannot know Him as Father.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:22 The Son is the only one,
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 according to verse 18,
00:09:23 --> 00:09:25 who has seen God
00:09:25 --> 00:09:27 and who therefore is qualified to come
00:09:27 --> 00:09:29 from the Father's side as human
00:09:29 --> 00:09:31 and make Him known to us.
00:09:31 --> 00:09:33 In John chapter 17,
00:09:33 --> 00:09:35 just before Jesus is about to face the cross,
00:09:35 --> 00:09:37 Jesus prays to His Father.
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 And in His prayer,
00:09:38 --> 00:09:40 He explains that He has completed the work
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 that He was given.
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 And His work,
00:09:43 --> 00:09:45 according to John 17, verse 6,
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 is to reveal the Father
00:09:47 --> 00:09:49 to those who belong to Him.
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 Now, don't get me wrong
00:09:52 --> 00:09:54 when I say that the Son shows up
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 and the Son reveals.
00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 The Father is absolutely committed
00:09:57 --> 00:09:59 to having a relationship with us.
00:10:00 --> 00:10:03 He cares about restoring the break
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 that was forced by sin.
00:10:05 --> 00:10:07 The Spirit is absolutely committed
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 to bringing people back
00:10:08 --> 00:10:10 into a relationship with God,
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 but it is the Son
00:10:11 --> 00:10:13 who reveals the Father
00:10:13 --> 00:10:15 that we might know Him,
00:10:16 --> 00:10:18 that we might have a relationship with Him.
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 John 14,
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 we looked at it a couple of weeks ago,
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 verse 6,
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 Jesus says,
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 I am the way,
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 the truth,
00:10:24 --> 00:10:24 and the life.
00:10:24 --> 00:10:26 No one comes to the Father
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 except through me.
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 I remember I was on a holiday
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 a few years ago,
00:10:31 --> 00:10:31 just before,
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 no, I turned 21,
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 and for my birthday,
00:10:34 --> 00:10:36 I got given an overseas ticket
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 and I was silly enough
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 to take a credit card as well
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 because I didn't have any savings.
00:10:40 --> 00:10:40 So I just went overseas
00:10:40 --> 00:10:42 and kind of made up my holiday
00:10:42 --> 00:10:42 as I went.
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 And travelling through
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 a bit of France
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 and Paris in particular,
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 basically what you can do there
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 is the Eiffel Tower
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 and galleries.
00:10:51 --> 00:10:51 That's all there is.
00:10:52 --> 00:10:54 And so I wandered around doing it.
00:10:54 --> 00:10:57 Hey, I've been there twice.
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 It's all there is.
00:10:59 --> 00:11:01 So I did the Eiffel Tower.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:01 That was covered.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 And then I started going around
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 a few galleries.
00:11:03 --> 00:11:05 And I was in the Louvre
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 because that's the one
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 you have to go to
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 because it's got that tiny little
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 unimpressive picture
00:11:09 --> 00:11:09 of that woman.
00:11:11 --> 00:11:13 But as I was walking through there,
00:11:13 --> 00:11:15 they had a power failure,
00:11:15 --> 00:11:17 which was very exciting,
00:11:17 --> 00:11:17 obviously,
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 because they were panicking,
00:11:18 --> 00:11:20 thinking stuff might get stolen
00:11:20 --> 00:11:20 or damaged.
00:11:20 --> 00:11:22 And there's certain rooms in there
00:11:22 --> 00:11:24 that have no windows,
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 no skylights,
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 no natural light whatsoever.
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 And so in those rooms,
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 it was fairly dangerous
00:11:29 --> 00:11:31 trying to navigate your way
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 while the power was out.
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 And I was stuck in one of these rooms
00:11:35 --> 00:11:35 for a few minutes.
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 I figured it was safer
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 to just sit
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 than maybe do some
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 really, really expensive damage.
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 So I was sitting,
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 waiting for the lights to come on,
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 completely oblivious
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 to what was around me.
00:11:45 --> 00:11:47 I was literally within inches
00:11:47 --> 00:11:50 of world famous,
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 really expensive,
00:11:52 --> 00:11:52 really impressive,
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 detailed artworks.
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 I couldn't tell you
00:11:55 --> 00:11:55 what they were,
00:11:55 --> 00:11:57 but I was very close to them
00:11:57 --> 00:12:00 and I had absolutely no idea.
00:12:00 --> 00:12:02 The absolutely essential ingredient
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 for me to appreciate
00:12:03 --> 00:12:04 those artworks
00:12:04 --> 00:12:05 and see the detail
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 that was there
00:12:06 --> 00:12:06 was light.
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 Without light,
00:12:08 --> 00:12:08 it doesn't matter
00:12:08 --> 00:12:10 how impressive they are,
00:12:10 --> 00:12:10 there is something
00:12:10 --> 00:12:12 that holds me back
00:12:12 --> 00:12:12 from being able
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 to appreciate them
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 and see them.
00:12:14 --> 00:12:16 And the testimony
00:12:16 --> 00:12:16 of Scripture
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 is that Jesus
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 is the light
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 of the world.
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 Without Him,
00:12:21 --> 00:12:22 it doesn't matter
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 how hard we look,
00:12:23 --> 00:12:23 it doesn't matter
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 how close we come,
00:12:24 --> 00:12:26 we cannot see
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 the glory
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 of our Heavenly Father.
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 It doesn't matter
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 what else you have,
00:12:32 --> 00:12:34 you need Jesus.
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 You need the Son
00:12:35 --> 00:12:37 to come in flesh
00:12:37 --> 00:12:39 because He is the light
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 that illuminates
00:12:40 --> 00:12:42 the Father in Heaven.
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 Through Jesus
00:12:44 --> 00:12:45 and Jesus alone,
00:12:45 --> 00:12:46 we are given
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 the opportunity
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 to be called,
00:12:48 --> 00:12:48 verse 12,
00:12:49 --> 00:12:51 children of God.
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 Through Jesus,
00:12:53 --> 00:12:54 we have this amazing gift
00:12:54 --> 00:12:55 that we are actually
00:12:55 --> 00:12:57 drawn into the relationship
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 of the Trinity.
00:12:59 --> 00:12:59 We are going to get
00:12:59 --> 00:13:00 to that relationship
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 more in a couple
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 of weeks' time,
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 but last week
00:13:03 --> 00:13:03 we talked about
00:13:03 --> 00:13:04 how the Father
00:13:04 --> 00:13:04 and the Son
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 love one another
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 and know one another
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 intimately.
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 What it means
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 to be a child of God
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 is to be drawn
00:13:10 --> 00:13:11 into that relationship
00:13:11 --> 00:13:13 where the Father
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 loves us
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 and cares for us
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 and where we love
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 Him back
00:13:17 --> 00:13:17 and we marvel
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 and rejoice
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 in His glory
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 and majesty.
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 There is an amazing
00:13:21 --> 00:13:23 phrase in the prayer
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 that Jesus is praying
00:13:24 --> 00:13:24 in John 17.
00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 He says these words
00:13:26 --> 00:13:26 in verse 20,
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 My prayer is not
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 for them alone,
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 talking about His disciples.
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 I pray also
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 for those who will
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 believe in Me
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 through their message.
00:13:34 --> 00:13:34 That's us.
00:13:35 --> 00:13:35 Here's the bit.
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 That all of them
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 may be one,
00:13:38 --> 00:13:38 Father,
00:13:38 --> 00:13:40 just as You are in Me
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 and I am in You.
00:13:41 --> 00:13:44 May they also be in Us
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 so that the world
00:13:45 --> 00:13:46 may believe
00:13:46 --> 00:13:47 that You have sent Me.
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 The relationship
00:13:49 --> 00:13:50 that God wants
00:13:50 --> 00:13:50 with you
00:13:50 --> 00:13:52 is not a distant relationship.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 Jesus came
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 so that you might
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 know the Father
