00:00:04 --> 00:00:07 Your teachers might even be married, they may have kids,
00:00:07 --> 00:00:09 they may be friends of some people.
00:00:10 --> 00:00:13 And this came as a shock to me because up to that point in my life,
00:00:13 --> 00:00:16 all I saw was the person down the front yelling at me
00:00:16 --> 00:00:19 and giving me work to do and making my life miserable.
00:00:19 --> 00:00:22 But it turns out there is different aspects to this teacher.
00:00:23 --> 00:00:27 And it is important for me to actually relate to them as a person
00:00:27 --> 00:00:29 to understand these various different aspects.
00:00:29 --> 00:00:31 Yes, they're a teacher, they have a job,
00:00:31 --> 00:00:34 but they are also a friend to some people,
00:00:34 --> 00:00:37 potentially a dad or a mom or a husband or a wife.
00:00:38 --> 00:00:39 And the same is true of God.
00:00:40 --> 00:00:43 It is great to know that there is a God,
00:00:44 --> 00:00:45 to know that there is one God,
00:00:46 --> 00:00:50 but we are missing something if we leave out or skip the fact
00:00:50 --> 00:00:52 that he is Father.
00:00:52 --> 00:00:54 That's where we're going to spend time tonight.
00:00:54 --> 00:00:59 To leave that out is to actually miss out on God as he is.
00:00:59 --> 00:01:03 It's to get a deficient or a not complete view of him.
00:01:03 --> 00:01:05 It's to make God less than he is.
00:01:06 --> 00:01:09 And so it matters that if we're going to know God,
00:01:09 --> 00:01:10 which is what being a Christian is,
00:01:10 --> 00:01:12 if we're going to have a relationship with him,
00:01:12 --> 00:01:15 it matters that we understand him as Father
00:01:15 --> 00:01:19 so that we see him clearly and we can actually relate to him well.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:21 Now before we get into this passage,
00:01:21 --> 00:01:22 I want to give you some context really quickly.
00:01:23 --> 00:01:25 And these are some things that I'm going to say over and over
00:01:25 --> 00:01:25 through this series,
00:01:26 --> 00:01:29 four things that the Bible teaches to be true.
00:01:30 --> 00:01:33 First one, there is only one God.
00:01:33 --> 00:01:36 Second one, that God is three persons,
00:01:37 --> 00:01:38 Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:43 Third one, each member of the Trinity is equally God,
00:01:43 --> 00:01:46 eternally God and fully God.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:49 Fourth one, each member of that Trinity
00:01:49 --> 00:01:55 is a distinct personal expression of the one divine nature.
00:01:55 --> 00:01:58 Now there is a whole lot wrapped up in those four things,
00:01:58 --> 00:02:00 but we need to have that as a context
00:02:00 --> 00:02:03 as we begin to wrestle with God as Father
00:02:03 --> 00:02:07 because God as Trinity is a difficult thing to think about.
00:02:07 --> 00:02:09 We learned last week it's incomprehensible,
00:02:09 --> 00:02:10 but it's still important.
00:02:11 --> 00:02:11 It's not easy,
00:02:12 --> 00:02:14 but that doesn't change the fact that it's true.
00:02:14 --> 00:02:15 And so tonight as we wrestle with it,
00:02:15 --> 00:02:17 the question we need to ask is,
00:02:17 --> 00:02:20 what is it that makes the Father the Father?
00:02:21 --> 00:02:22 What is it that makes Him distinct?
00:02:23 --> 00:02:26 And what impact does that have on us knowing Him?
00:02:26 --> 00:02:29 I want to show you three things from Ephesians 1.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:32 This isn't the whole list of what makes the Father the Father,
00:02:32 --> 00:02:34 but this is a good starting point for us tonight.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:35 So let's look at Ephesians 1.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:37 First thing that we need to grab out of here
00:02:37 --> 00:02:42 is that the Father is supreme within the Trinity.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:45 Now, even though the Father, Son and Holy Spirit
00:02:45 --> 00:02:46 have absolute equality,
00:02:47 --> 00:02:48 they're all eternal,
00:02:48 --> 00:02:50 they're all all-powerful,
00:02:50 --> 00:02:51 they're all all-knowing,
00:02:52 --> 00:02:55 yet somehow the Father is supreme
00:02:55 --> 00:02:58 over the Son and the Spirit.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:02 He's the Boutros Boutros of the Trinity, if you will.
00:03:02 --> 00:03:04 The America of the UN,
00:03:04 --> 00:03:06 the Steve Jeffrey of our St. Paul's staff team.
00:03:07 --> 00:03:08 Maybe not.
00:03:08 --> 00:03:11 But the point is,
00:03:11 --> 00:03:15 the Father has authority over the Son and over the Spirit.
00:03:15 --> 00:03:18 Let's have a look at this passage in Ephesians again
00:03:18 --> 00:03:20 and try and see how it's showing us this.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:22 First one, in verse 4.
00:03:22 --> 00:03:41 Now, jump down to verse 9.
00:03:41 --> 00:03:59 Verse 11.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:16 And then right down the bottom,
00:04:16 --> 00:04:18 in the end of verse 14,
00:04:18 --> 00:04:19 all this stuff being done,
00:04:19 --> 00:04:21 we have the Spirit that's a deposit
00:04:21 --> 00:04:22 guaranteeing our inheritance
00:04:22 --> 00:04:24 until the redemption of those
00:04:24 --> 00:04:25 who are God's possession
00:04:25 --> 00:04:27 to the praise of His,
00:04:27 --> 00:04:29 the Father's, glory.
00:04:30 --> 00:04:32 It's the Father's will.
00:04:32 --> 00:04:34 It's the Father's choice
00:04:34 --> 00:04:35 from start to finish.
00:04:36 --> 00:04:37 Don't get me wrong.
00:04:37 --> 00:04:39 The Son gets some serious billing
00:04:39 --> 00:04:40 in this particular passage.
00:04:40 --> 00:04:42 Jesus gets mentioned over and over and over.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:43 But in those verses,
00:04:43 --> 00:04:45 we see that the Father's will
00:04:45 --> 00:04:47 is the plan that's happening.
00:04:48 --> 00:04:51 It's the Father who executes His desires.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:53 It's the Father who planned out creation
00:04:53 --> 00:04:54 before it was there.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:56 It's the Father who planned
00:04:56 --> 00:04:59 that He would send the Son to save people.
00:04:59 --> 00:05:01 And even that final day,
00:05:01 --> 00:05:02 when everything gets made right,
00:05:02 --> 00:05:03 when Jesus comes back,
00:05:04 --> 00:05:06 all of that is restored
00:05:06 --> 00:05:07 according to the plan
00:05:07 --> 00:05:09 of the Father's will.
00:05:10 --> 00:05:12 It's the mystery of His will
00:05:12 --> 00:05:14 that has been revealed.
00:05:14 --> 00:05:15 And you can be sure
00:05:15 --> 00:05:18 that every detail in all creation
00:05:18 --> 00:05:19 is according to His will.
00:05:19 --> 00:05:20 In verse 11.
00:05:21 --> 00:05:22 In Him we were chosen,
00:05:22 --> 00:05:24 predestined according to the plan
00:05:24 --> 00:05:26 of Him who works out everything
00:05:26 --> 00:05:29 in conformity with the purpose of His will.
00:05:31 --> 00:05:32 Everything is worked out
00:05:32 --> 00:05:34 according to the Father's will.
00:05:34 --> 00:05:34 There's no gap.
00:05:35 --> 00:05:36 God doesn't plan the big stuff
00:05:36 --> 00:05:37 and then send in the Son and the Spirit
00:05:37 --> 00:05:39 to fill the gaps and sort out the details.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:41 He doesn't leave the rest to them
00:05:41 --> 00:05:42 or even to us.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:46 It is the Father who works out everything
00:05:46 --> 00:05:49 in the conformity of His will.
00:05:50 --> 00:05:52 It is Him who guides and directs all things.
00:05:52 --> 00:05:54 And everything in heaven,
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 everything on earth,
00:05:56 --> 00:05:57 even the Son and the Spirit
00:05:57 --> 00:06:00 are subject to the authority
00:06:00 --> 00:06:02 of God the Father.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:05 But it's not an oppressive authority.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:07 We have this negative picture
00:06:07 --> 00:06:09 of authority in our existence.
00:06:09 --> 00:06:11 Think about the way that you react
00:06:11 --> 00:06:12 for those of you who drive
00:06:12 --> 00:06:13 when you see a parking cop.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:16 Whether you're getting a ticket or not,
00:06:17 --> 00:06:18 are you excited?
00:06:18 --> 00:06:21 Are you reverent towards their authority?
00:06:22 --> 00:06:23 They have an authority.
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 They are delegated by the local council
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 or whoever it is that's empowered them
00:06:27 --> 00:06:28 to come around and make sure
00:06:28 --> 00:06:30 that the laws are adhered to.
00:06:30 --> 00:06:31 But immediately,
00:06:32 --> 00:06:34 you think something along the lines of,
00:06:35 --> 00:06:35 jerk.
00:06:36 --> 00:06:38 It's okay to admit it
00:06:38 --> 00:06:39 because I know I've done it.
00:06:39 --> 00:06:40 Whether they're giving me a ticket
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 or someone else a ticket
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 or just walking to get their lunch.
00:06:42 --> 00:06:44 I see the ticket machine
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 and I don't think,
00:06:45 --> 00:06:47 wow, authority that is to be feared
00:06:47 --> 00:06:48 and respected.
00:06:48 --> 00:06:49 I think, authority,
00:06:49 --> 00:06:50 what a shackle.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:51 What a limitation.
00:06:52 --> 00:06:52 Don't they understand?
00:06:52 --> 00:06:54 I'm just running into the shop for a second
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 and it's not that I'm ignoring
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 the no standing sign.
00:06:56 --> 00:06:57 It's just that the no standing sign
00:06:57 --> 00:06:58 doesn't understand my situation.
00:07:00 --> 00:07:01 We don't like authority.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:03 We're happy to submit with authority
00:07:03 --> 00:07:04 as long as it fits in
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 with what we want it to do anyway.
00:07:06 --> 00:07:07 But we have this negative picture
00:07:07 --> 00:07:09 of authority that is over us.
00:07:09 --> 00:07:11 Whether it's parents or teachers
00:07:11 --> 00:07:12 or police or parking cops,
00:07:13 --> 00:07:15 we have this sense that authority
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 belittles us
00:07:16 --> 00:07:18 or reduces the one
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 who is under authority.
00:07:19 --> 00:07:21 But here in Ephesians
00:07:21 --> 00:07:23 and throughout all of Scripture,
00:07:23 --> 00:07:26 we see the Son and the Spirit
00:07:26 --> 00:07:28 under the authority of the Father.
00:07:30 --> 00:07:31 Even in the parts of the New Testament
00:07:31 --> 00:07:33 that proclaim the greatness
00:07:33 --> 00:07:35 and majesty of Jesus,
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 and there are a lot of them,
00:07:37 --> 00:07:39 even in the final exaltation of Jesus,
00:07:40 --> 00:07:43 the Father is still supreme.
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 He's still in the box seat.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 I'm going to put a couple of passages
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 up on the screen.
00:07:48 --> 00:07:49 Philippians 2 is the first one.
00:07:49 --> 00:07:51 This is the hymn about Jesus
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 who is in very nature God
00:07:52 --> 00:07:54 and humbles himself to death,
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 becoming obedient,
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 death on the cross,
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 and then God exalts him.
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 And it says here,
00:07:58 --> 00:08:00 therefore God exalted him
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 to the highest place,
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 gave him the name
00:08:02 --> 00:08:03 that's above every name,
00:08:03 --> 00:08:04 that at the name of Jesus
00:08:04 --> 00:08:05 every knee should bow
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 in heaven and on earth
00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 and under the earth,
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 and every tongue confess
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 that Jesus Christ is Lord.
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 This is exhaustive.
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 Everybody is going to acknowledge
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 Jesus as king,
00:08:15 --> 00:08:17 but Jesus' kingship is to what end?
00:08:18 --> 00:08:21 To the glory of God the Father.
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 He's given this name,
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 he's exalted,
00:08:24 --> 00:08:24 he's lifted up,
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 but even in that moment,
00:08:27 --> 00:08:30 the Son remains subject
00:08:30 --> 00:08:32 to the authority of the Father.
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 Another passage,
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 1 Corinthians 15.
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 I'll read a little bit extra
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 that comes just before the stuff
00:08:37 --> 00:08:39 that will be on the screen for you.
00:08:39 --> 00:08:41 1 Corinthians 15,
00:08:41 --> 00:08:43 and I will begin at verse 20.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:47 This is talking about resurrection,
00:08:47 --> 00:08:47 and it says,
00:08:47 --> 00:08:50 Christ has indeed been raised from the dead,
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 the firstfruits of those
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 who have fallen asleep.
00:08:52 --> 00:08:54 For since death came through one man,
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 the resurrection of the dead
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 comes also through a man.
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 For as in Adam all die,
00:08:59 --> 00:09:00 so in Christ all be made alive,
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 but each in his own turn.
00:09:02 --> 00:09:04 Christ the firstfruits then,
00:09:04 --> 00:09:04 when he comes,
00:09:05 --> 00:09:07 those who belong to him.
00:09:07 --> 00:09:09 Then the end will come,
00:09:09 --> 00:09:11 when he hands over the kingdom
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 to God the Father,
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 after he has destroyed
00:09:13 --> 00:09:15 all dominion, authority,
00:09:15 --> 00:09:15 and power.
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 For he must reign
00:09:17 --> 00:09:19 until he has put all his enemies
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 under his feet.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:22 The last enemy to be destroyed
00:09:22 --> 00:09:22 is death.
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 For he has put everything
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 under his feet.
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 Here's the key bit.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 Now when it says that
00:09:27 --> 00:09:29 everything has been put under him,
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 still talking about Jesus,
00:09:31 --> 00:09:33 it's clear that this does not include
00:09:33 --> 00:09:35 God the Father himself
00:09:35 --> 00:09:37 who put everything under Christ.
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 When he has done this,
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 then the Son himself
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 will be made subject
00:09:42 --> 00:09:44 to him who put everything
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 under him
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 so that God may be
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 all in all.
00:09:48 --> 00:09:50 Even at that final moment
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 when every authority
00:09:51 --> 00:09:53 has been laid low,
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 when everyone has acknowledged
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 the kingship of Jesus,
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 at that point,
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 the Son will not make
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 much of himself.
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 He will joyfully
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 and willingly
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 subject himself
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 to the authority
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 of God the Father.
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 Even in that moment,
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 Jesus willingly
00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 and wholeheartedly
00:10:10 --> 00:10:13 submits to authority.
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 And it's important
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 for us to recognize
00:10:15 --> 00:10:17 that the Father's authority
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 and his supremacy
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 is eternal.
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 In this passage in Ephesians,
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 we see that before
00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 the creation of the world,
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 God the Father
00:10:25 --> 00:10:27 had already planned things out.
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 He was exercising
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 his authority
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 before he spoke
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 the earth into motion.
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 He had already told the Son,
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 this is what you will do
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 before the world
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 had begun.
00:10:37 --> 00:10:37 And we see there
00:10:37 --> 00:10:39 in 1 Corinthians 15,
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 that at the end
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 and for all eternity,
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 the Son will make himself
00:10:42 --> 00:10:44 subject to God the Father
00:10:44 --> 00:10:46 because God the Father
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 was, is, and always
00:10:47 --> 00:10:49 will be supreme.
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 Now there's two
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 important implications,
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 well at least two
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 important implications
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 for us in this.
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 Authority
00:10:57 --> 00:10:59 is therefore
00:10:59 --> 00:11:01 inherently good.
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 God is good
00:11:04 --> 00:11:06 and authority
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 is part of who God is,
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 it's part of him
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 as Father
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 for all eternity,
00:11:11 --> 00:11:11 therefore
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 authority
00:11:12 --> 00:11:14 is good.
00:11:15 --> 00:11:15 Now,
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 we need to acknowledge
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 authority can be abused,
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 authority can be misused,
00:11:20 --> 00:11:22 but it's part of who God is
00:11:22 --> 00:11:24 and we need to be careful
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 as Christians
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 how we approach those
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 who are in authority
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 over us.
00:11:28 --> 00:11:30 Because if authority
00:11:30 --> 00:11:30 is good,
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 we're not justified
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 in our default position
00:11:32 --> 00:11:34 of just disliking authority
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 because it limits me.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 Because authority
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 is going to be there
00:11:39 --> 00:11:39 for all eternity.
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 It's not like
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 when we go to heaven,
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 suddenly all authority
00:11:44 --> 00:11:44 will be removed
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 and you will be a Lord
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 unto yourself.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 Therefore,
00:11:48 --> 00:11:48 all eternity,
00:11:49 --> 00:11:49 you too
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 will be subject
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 to the authority
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 of God the Father
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 and so we cannot
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 just throw authority
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 out as a bad thing
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 that the world
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 has given us.
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 Authority is part
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 of who God is.
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 But more importantly,
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 if we fail
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 to submit
00:12:03 --> 00:12:04 to earthly authority,
00:12:04 --> 00:12:05 parents,
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 teachers,
00:12:06 --> 00:12:06 police,
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 even church leadership,
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 we actually
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 handicap ourselves
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 when it comes
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 to our relationship
00:12:13 --> 00:12:13 with God.
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 If we lack
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 the ability
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 to submit
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 to authority,
00:12:19 --> 00:12:23 then we will struggle
00:12:23 --> 00:12:25 when it comes
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 to submitting
00:12:26 --> 00:12:26 to God.
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 If we breed
00:12:28 --> 00:12:28 within ourselves
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 a default setting
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 and a culture
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 where authority
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 is bad,
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 it is inevitable
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 that that will begin
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 to flow into the way
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 we relate to our God.
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 We will see authority
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 as a negative thing
00:12:40 --> 00:12:40 and instead
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 we will treat him
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 as equal with us,
00:12:43 --> 00:12:43 important,
00:12:44 --> 00:12:45 but not in charge.
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 God the Father
00:12:48 --> 00:12:48 is supreme
00:12:48 --> 00:12:50 over Jesus the Son
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 and over the Holy Spirit
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 and you can be sure
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 that he is supreme
00:12:53 --> 00:12:54 over us as well.
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 To reject authority,
00:12:57 --> 00:12:59 to reject his authority,
00:12:59 --> 00:13:00 is to reject him
00:13:00 --> 00:13:00 as Father,
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 to reject him
00:13:02 --> 00:13:02 as Father
00:13:02 --> 00:13:04 is to reject God
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 because that's
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 who he is.
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 Second implication
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 of the authority
00:13:09 --> 00:13:09 of the Father
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 is that in God
00:13:10 --> 00:13:11 we have a model

00:13:14 --> 00:13:14 We all have
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 different experiences
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 of fatherhood,
00:13:16 --> 00:13:16 for some of us
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 it's been positive,
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 for some negative,
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 but for those of us
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 who are fathers
00:13:21 --> 00:13:21 or who will be
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 one day,
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 we must recognize
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 that authority
00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 is an appropriate position
00:13:26 --> 00:13:27 for a father
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 over a child.
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 It is right
00:13:30 --> 00:13:30 for fathers
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 to demand respect
00:13:31 --> 00:13:33 and to demand obedience
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 from their children,
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 not oppressively,
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 not in a burdensome way,
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 but the respect
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 that is commanded
00:13:39 --> 00:13:39 from kids
00:13:39 --> 00:13:41 will teach kids
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 that God,
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 their Heavenly Father,
00:13:43 --> 00:13:45 also demands respect
00:13:45 --> 00:13:46 and obedience.
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 As fathers,
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 we will be the model
00:13:49 --> 00:13:51 for our own kids
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 and for the world
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 around us
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 of what the fatherhood
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 of God looks like
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 and so we need
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 to look to Him
00:13:57 --> 00:13:59 and seek to fulfill
00:13:59 --> 00:13:59 the pattern
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 that He's given us.
00:14:01 --> 00:14:02 The right response
00:14:02 --> 00:14:02 to the authority
00:14:02 --> 00:14:03 of the Father
00:14:03 --> 00:14:05 is found in the perfect
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 submission of Jesus
00:14:06 --> 00:14:07 but we're going to get
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 to that a little bit
00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 more next week
00:14:09 --> 00:14:09 so you're just going to
00:14:09 --> 00:14:10 have to hold that
00:14:10 --> 00:14:10 on the shelf
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 a little bit.
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 The Father is supreme.
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 It's the first thing
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 that Ephesians 1
00:14:16 --> 00:14:16 wants to show us
00:14:16 --> 00:14:18 but not only supreme,
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 secondly,
00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 the Father is
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 abundantly generous.
00:14:21 --> 00:14:23 Part of what makes
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 the Father's authority
00:14:24 --> 00:14:25 perfect and good
00:14:25 --> 00:14:27 is the love
00:14:27 --> 00:14:28 that goes hand in hand
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 with the authority
00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 that He exercises.
00:14:30 --> 00:14:31 Love for His Son,
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 love for the Spirit
00:14:32 --> 00:14:33 and love for us.
00:14:34 --> 00:14:35 If you look at
00:14:35 --> 00:14:36 Jesus' life on the earth,
00:14:36 --> 00:14:38 Jesus is provided for
00:14:38 --> 00:14:39 by His Father.
00:14:40 --> 00:14:40 The Father sends
00:14:40 --> 00:14:42 the Spirit on Jesus
00:14:42 --> 00:14:43 at His baptism
00:14:43 --> 00:14:44 so that the Spirit
00:14:44 --> 00:14:45 will empower Jesus
00:14:45 --> 00:14:46 for His earthly life.
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 The Spirit is the one
00:14:48 --> 00:14:48 who's giving Him
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 the power
00:14:49 --> 00:14:50 but the Father's the one
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 who gave Him the Spirit
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 and so it is the Father
00:14:52 --> 00:14:53 who provides
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 for His Son.
00:14:55 --> 00:14:56 Jesus is often referred
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 to as the Son of the Father
00:14:57 --> 00:14:58 but more than that,
00:14:58 --> 00:14:59 in Mark chapter 1
00:14:59 --> 00:15:01 where Jesus is being baptized,
00:15:01 --> 00:15:02 it says this,
00:15:02 --> 00:15:04 at that time Jesus came
00:15:04 --> 00:15:05 from Nazareth in Galilee
00:15:05 --> 00:15:06 and was baptized
00:15:06 --> 00:15:07 by John in the Jordan.
00:15:08 --> 00:15:09 As Jesus was coming up
00:15:09 --> 00:15:10 out of the water,
00:15:10 --> 00:15:11 He saw heaven being torn open
00:15:11 --> 00:15:13 and the Spirit descending
00:15:13 --> 00:15:14 on Him like a dove
00:15:14 --> 00:15:16 and a voice came from heaven,
00:15:17 --> 00:15:18 You are my Son
00:15:18 --> 00:15:19 whom I love.
00:15:20 --> 00:15:22 With you I am well pleased.
00:15:23 --> 00:15:25 Jesus knows
00:15:25 --> 00:15:26 the Father's love for Him.
00:15:27 --> 00:15:29 He knows the Father's provision.
00:15:29 --> 00:15:31 He knows the Father's
00:15:31 --> 00:15:32 abundant generosity
00:15:32 --> 00:15:35 and so the authority
00:15:35 --> 00:15:36 that He is called
00:15:36 --> 00:15:37 to submit to
00:15:37 --> 00:15:38 is in no way oppressive
00:15:38 --> 00:15:39 or negative
00:15:39 --> 00:15:40 or difficult.
00:15:41 --> 00:15:43 But the amazing blessing
00:15:43 --> 00:15:44 is that we too
00:15:44 --> 00:15:45 know the loving provision
00:15:46 --> 00:15:47 of our Heavenly Father.
00:15:47 --> 00:15:49 Have a look at verse 7 and 8.
00:15:49 --> 00:15:51 In Him we have redemption
00:15:51 --> 00:15:52 through His blood,
00:15:52 --> 00:15:54 the forgiveness of sins
00:15:54 --> 00:15:55 in accordance with the riches
00:15:55 --> 00:15:57 of God's grace
00:15:57 --> 00:15:59 that He lavished on us
00:15:59 --> 00:16:01 with all wisdom
00:16:01 --> 00:16:02 and understanding.
00:16:02 --> 00:16:04 The love of our Heavenly Father
00:16:04 --> 00:16:05 is lavish.
00:16:06 --> 00:16:07 It's abundant.
00:16:07 --> 00:16:09 It is poured out on us.
00:16:09 --> 00:16:11 It is overflowing.
00:16:12 --> 00:16:13 God the Father
00:16:13 --> 00:16:14 is generous.
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 James 1.17 tells us
00:16:17 --> 00:16:18 that every good
00:16:18 --> 00:16:19 and perfect gift
00:16:19 --> 00:16:20 is from above
00:16:20 --> 00:16:21 coming down
00:16:21 --> 00:16:22 from the Father
00:16:22 --> 00:16:23 of heavenly lights
00:16:23 --> 00:16:24 who does not change
00:16:24 --> 00:16:25 like shifting shadows.
00:16:25 --> 00:16:27 In Ephesians verse 3
00:16:27 --> 00:16:28 we read,
00:16:28 --> 00:16:29 Praise be to the God
00:16:29 --> 00:16:30 and Father
00:16:30 --> 00:16:31 of our Lord Jesus Christ
00:16:31 --> 00:16:32 who has blessed us
00:16:32 --> 00:16:33 in the heavenly realms
00:16:33 --> 00:16:35 with every
00:16:35 --> 00:16:36 spiritual blessing.
00:16:38 --> 00:16:39 God's love
00:16:39 --> 00:16:40 is lavish.
00:16:41 --> 00:16:42 It is abundant.
00:16:42 --> 00:16:43 It is overwhelming.
00:16:44 --> 00:16:45 Every good gift
00:16:45 --> 00:16:46 comes from God.
00:16:46 --> 00:16:46 Every good thing
00:16:46 --> 00:16:47 you have in your life,
00:16:48 --> 00:16:49 everything that you
00:16:49 --> 00:16:50 are thankful for
00:16:50 --> 00:16:51 is a gift
00:16:51 --> 00:16:52 from the Father
00:16:52 --> 00:16:54 for which he is worthy
00:16:54 --> 00:16:55 of our thanks
00:16:55 --> 00:16:56 and praise.
00:16:57 --> 00:16:58 But the greatest gift
00:16:58 --> 00:16:59 of the Father
00:16:59 --> 00:16:59 to us,
00:16:59 --> 00:17:00 his children,
00:17:01 --> 00:17:01 is himself.
00:17:03 --> 00:17:04 As the creator
00:17:04 --> 00:17:05 of anything

00:17:10 --> 00:17:11 when you watch

00:17:12 --> 00:17:13 and somebody finds
00:17:13 --> 00:17:14 a genie lamp,
00:17:14 --> 00:17:15 what's the first wish
00:17:15 --> 00:17:16 of a smart person?
00:17:17 --> 00:17:18 More wishes.
00:17:19 --> 00:17:20 They want the source
00:17:20 --> 00:17:21 of the goodness
00:17:21 --> 00:17:22 and in the same way
00:17:22 --> 00:17:22 the Father
00:17:22 --> 00:17:23 who gives us good things
00:17:23 --> 00:17:25 gives us the greatest gift
00:17:25 --> 00:17:27 in that he gives us
00:17:27 --> 00:17:27 himself.
00:17:28 --> 00:17:29 He gives us access
00:17:29 --> 00:17:30 to the unlimited,
00:17:31 --> 00:17:31 abundant,
00:17:31 --> 00:17:32 and lavish love
00:17:32 --> 00:17:34 of our heavenly Father.
00:17:35 --> 00:17:35 Now the Son
00:17:35 --> 00:17:37 gets that in a measure
00:17:37 --> 00:17:38 that we can only begin
00:17:38 --> 00:17:39 to dream about.
00:17:39 --> 00:17:40 That's the marvel
00:17:40 --> 00:17:41 of the Trinity
00:17:41 --> 00:17:41 is that the Father
00:17:41 --> 00:17:42 and the Son
00:17:42 --> 00:17:43 are so interconnected
00:17:43 --> 00:17:46 and so closely related
00:17:46 --> 00:17:48 that they get each other
00:17:48 --> 00:17:49 in fullness
00:17:49 --> 00:17:50 but for us
00:17:50 --> 00:17:52 the Father's love
00:17:52 --> 00:17:54 climaxes
00:17:54 --> 00:17:55 in Jesus
00:17:55 --> 00:17:56 on the cross.
00:17:57 --> 00:17:58 Through that moment
00:17:58 --> 00:17:59 of sacrifice
00:17:59 --> 00:18:00 that the Father pays
00:18:00 --> 00:18:02 we come to know him
00:18:02 --> 00:18:03 as Father.

00:18:15 --> 00:18:16 eternity
00:18:16 --> 00:18:16 he has been
00:18:16 --> 00:18:17 the Supreme Father
00:18:17 --> 00:18:18 but it's that
00:18:18 --> 00:18:19 it's not until
00:18:19 --> 00:18:20 we get to Jesus
00:18:20 --> 00:18:20 the Son
00:18:20 --> 00:18:22 that we are invited
00:18:22 --> 00:18:23 to know him
00:18:23 --> 00:18:24 as Father.
00:18:25 --> 00:18:26 That is the lavish
00:18:26 --> 00:18:27 love of the Father
00:18:27 --> 00:18:28 that he would sacrifice
00:18:28 --> 00:18:28 his Son
00:18:28 --> 00:18:29 and John 14
00:18:29 --> 00:18:30 puts it explicitly
00:18:30 --> 00:18:31 when Jesus says
00:18:31 --> 00:18:32 I am the way
00:18:32 --> 00:18:33 the truth
00:18:33 --> 00:18:33 and the life
00:18:33 --> 00:18:34 no one comes
00:18:34 --> 00:18:35 to the Father
00:18:35 --> 00:18:37 except through me.
00:18:38 --> 00:18:39 The love
00:18:39 --> 00:18:39 of the Father
00:18:39 --> 00:18:40 for us
00:18:40 --> 00:18:41 is to draw us
00:18:41 --> 00:18:42 into a relationship

00:18:42 --> 00:18:44 where he remains

00:18:51 --> 00:18:52 not just as
00:18:52 --> 00:18:52 a Father

00:18:53 --> 00:18:54 the Father
00:18:54 --> 00:18:56 but our Father
00:18:56 --> 00:18:58 and so Jesus
00:18:58 --> 00:18:59 can teach his
00:18:59 --> 00:18:59 disciples
00:18:59 --> 00:19:00 and we can read
00:19:00 --> 00:19:01 in Matthew 6

00:19:04 --> 00:19:05 in heaven.
