00:00:04 --> 00:00:09 and we will end this month with that great missionary text,
00:00:10 --> 00:00:13 Matthew 28, 16 to 20.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:19 This passage of the Bible has moved generations of men,
00:00:19 --> 00:00:23 women, and children to sacrifice their all,
00:00:23 --> 00:00:27 their homes, their careers, their lives,
00:00:27 --> 00:00:32 to take the gospel to the edge of the world and beyond.
00:00:33 --> 00:00:39 And I pray that this passage will do that for us today.
00:00:41 --> 00:00:45 I want to make three simple points from the passage.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:50 The first point is the reason for global mission.
00:00:51 --> 00:00:54 And I want to draw your attention to verse 18.
00:00:54 --> 00:00:58 The reason for global mission.
00:00:59 --> 00:01:02 Jesus came to them, that is the 11,
00:01:03 --> 00:01:09 and said, all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
00:01:11 --> 00:01:19 It has been said that mission is beggars telling other beggars where to find food.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:21 That is true.
00:01:23 --> 00:01:27 The world is full of needy people, blind people,
00:01:28 --> 00:01:29 destroying themselves.
00:01:30 --> 00:01:33 They are like sheep without a shepherd.
00:01:34 --> 00:01:36 And we ought to have compassion on them.
00:01:38 --> 00:01:42 But the reason for mission given in this passage here
00:01:42 --> 00:01:46 is not simply the needs of the world.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:51 Nor is it simply a command of Jesus.
00:01:53 --> 00:01:54 Since William Carey,
00:01:55 --> 00:02:01 Christians have treated Matthew 28 as the 11th commandment.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:07 Yes, it is true that Jesus gave a commandment to his 11.
00:02:07 --> 00:02:15 But again, the reason for global mission given here by Jesus is very different.
00:02:16 --> 00:02:18 Please have a look again at verse 28.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:21 Jesus says,
00:02:21 --> 00:02:26 All authority on heaven and on earth has been given to me.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:34 The reason for the disciples of Jesus going into the world to proclaim the gospel
00:02:34 --> 00:02:37 is that Jesus is Lord.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:46 The Old Testament has promised that God will one day send his special king to establish his kingdom.
00:02:47 --> 00:02:48 He is the son of David.
00:02:48 --> 00:02:55 In Daniel 7, we see a picture painted of this coming king.
00:02:55 --> 00:03:00 When he comes, all authority on heaven and on earth will be given to him.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:05 And at the resurrection of Jesus, this has now happened.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:13 The greatest missionary passage in the Bible is ultimately not about mission.
00:03:15 --> 00:03:17 Or church.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 Or money.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:26 Ultimately, the greatest missionary passage in the Bible is about Jesus.
00:03:28 --> 00:03:31 Jesus is the reason for global mission.
00:03:31 --> 00:03:38 For he is worthy of all our glory and honour and power.
00:03:39 --> 00:03:43 If global mission were about the needs of our neighbours,
00:03:43 --> 00:03:46 we can always find a greater need than theirs.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:50 The church in Cheswood is shrinking.
00:03:52 --> 00:03:55 But the church in Africa is growing.
00:03:55 --> 00:04:03 Logically, why would we give to Africa when we can give here?
00:04:04 --> 00:04:06 When the need seems to be greater.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:11 But, if our focus is on the honour of Jesus,
00:04:13 --> 00:04:22 then we will not find one worthier of our glory, honour, or our money, or our lives.
00:04:22 --> 00:04:27 I have told a story of Helen Roosevelt before,
00:04:28 --> 00:04:35 but her testimony is so great and worthy that we should hear it again.
00:04:36 --> 00:04:41 Roosevelt was a doctor working in the Congo in the 1950s.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:44 She worked with orphans.
00:04:45 --> 00:04:49 She started a camp for orphans with leprosy.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:53 A godly, gracious, compassionate woman
00:04:53 --> 00:04:55 with a quiet, gentle spirit.
00:04:56 --> 00:04:58 A woman of God.
00:05:00 --> 00:05:04 In the 1960s, there was political unrest.
00:05:04 --> 00:05:05 A revolution.
00:05:06 --> 00:05:09 Most Western missionaries left.
00:05:10 --> 00:05:15 But Helen Roosevelt stayed, along with a few others.
00:05:15 --> 00:05:19 She couldn't leave the people behind,
00:05:19 --> 00:05:22 and trusting herself to God.
00:05:23 --> 00:05:27 In that period, at least 27 missionaries were killed.
00:05:28 --> 00:05:31 Helen Roosevelt herself was captured by the rebels.
00:05:32 --> 00:05:36 She was beaten, kicked, and brutally raped.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:40 Finally, she was rescued by mercenary soldiers
00:05:40 --> 00:05:43 and returned to Britain for recovery.
00:05:45 --> 00:05:49 She was asked a tough question by a TV interviewer.
00:05:51 --> 00:05:52 And that was the question,
00:05:53 --> 00:05:54 Was it worth it?
00:05:56 --> 00:05:59 The suffering and all that you went through,
00:05:59 --> 00:06:01 was it worth it?
00:06:02 --> 00:06:03 And she replied,
00:06:03 --> 00:06:07 The question is not whether it is worth it.
00:06:08 --> 00:06:10 The question is,
00:06:10 --> 00:06:12 Is God worthy?
00:06:15 --> 00:06:18 And the answer is yes.
00:06:19 --> 00:06:20 He is worthy.
00:06:20 --> 00:06:23 A hundred percent worthy.
00:06:24 --> 00:06:29 He is worthy of all that we can offer up and more.
00:06:29 --> 00:06:33 After 14 months of treatment in England,
00:06:34 --> 00:06:38 she returned to the Congo to help rebuild the nation.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:45 What is worthy to give up your life for?
00:06:45 --> 00:06:48 To sacrifice everything for?
00:06:49 --> 00:06:51 The reason for mission.
00:06:53 --> 00:06:56 Secondly, the content of global mission.
00:06:56 --> 00:06:58 Verses 19 to 20.
00:06:59 --> 00:07:03 Therefore,
00:07:04 --> 00:07:09 go and make disciples of all nations,
00:07:09 --> 00:07:11 baptizing them in the name of the Father
00:07:11 --> 00:07:14 and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
00:07:14 --> 00:07:17 and teaching them to obey everything
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 I have commanded you.
00:07:20 --> 00:07:22 The content of mission.
00:07:22 --> 00:07:24 Because Jesus is Lord,
00:07:24 --> 00:07:27 what are his disciples to do?
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 They are,
00:07:29 --> 00:07:31 verses 19 to 20,
00:07:31 --> 00:07:34 they are to make disciples of the nations.
00:07:35 --> 00:07:39 Global mission is discipleship.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:42 Well, how do we make disciples?
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 Two things are highlighted.
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 Firstly,
00:07:47 --> 00:07:47 baptism,
00:07:48 --> 00:07:50 which is what we'll be doing later on.
00:07:50 --> 00:07:52 But strictly speaking,
00:07:53 --> 00:07:56 the baptism here is not the baptism
00:07:56 --> 00:07:59 that we will be doing with water later on today.
00:08:01 --> 00:08:03 What we will do later with the water
00:08:03 --> 00:08:08 is a symbol of what Jesus is talking about here.
00:08:08 --> 00:08:10 Here,
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 to baptize,
00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 I believe,
00:08:12 --> 00:08:15 means to bring into relationship
00:08:15 --> 00:08:16 with someone
00:08:16 --> 00:08:19 under the authority of.
00:08:21 --> 00:08:21 And what,
00:08:21 --> 00:08:22 this is why,
00:08:23 --> 00:08:23 sorry,
00:08:24 --> 00:08:28 this is why the nations are to be baptized into.
00:08:29 --> 00:08:31 So the proposition is into.
00:08:31 --> 00:08:33 To bring into a relationship.
00:08:33 --> 00:08:35 Into what relationship?
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 Into who?
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 To have relationship.
00:08:39 --> 00:08:43 The nations are to be brought into a relationship
00:08:43 --> 00:08:45 with God who is Father,
00:08:46 --> 00:08:46 Son,
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 and Spirit.
00:08:49 --> 00:08:51 It is a reminder to us that
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 the God of the Bible
00:08:52 --> 00:08:54 is not the force,
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 but personal.
00:08:57 --> 00:08:59 He is Father.
00:09:00 --> 00:09:02 God is also Son.
00:09:02 --> 00:09:05 God is a reminder to us
00:09:05 --> 00:09:08 that we cannot save ourselves from our sins.
00:09:08 --> 00:09:10 We need someone else
00:09:10 --> 00:09:13 to save us from our sins.
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 It's also a reminder
00:09:15 --> 00:09:17 that God is Spirit.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:21 That you cannot be in a relationship with this God
00:09:21 --> 00:09:23 by trying harder
00:09:23 --> 00:09:25 to be a better person.
00:09:25 --> 00:09:29 You need to be born again.
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 Our friends today
00:09:31 --> 00:09:34 will be baptized by water later.
00:09:35 --> 00:09:37 The ceremony symbolizes
00:09:37 --> 00:09:39 that they have entered
00:09:39 --> 00:09:41 into a relationship
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 or under the authority
00:09:42 --> 00:09:44 of this God.
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 Secondly,
00:09:47 --> 00:09:49 discipleship involves
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 teaching
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 and by implication,
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 learning.
00:09:52 --> 00:09:54 It is, first of all,
00:09:54 --> 00:09:56 an intellectual exercise.
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 Discipleship involves
00:09:58 --> 00:10:00 the changing of the mind.
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 In Matthew,
00:10:02 --> 00:10:04 if you read through the Gospel,
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 you will see that Jesus
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 has spoken a great deal
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 about discipleship.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 So, Sermon on the Mount.
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 Christian disciples
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 have a righteousness
00:10:14 --> 00:10:16 greater than the hypocrites.
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 Christian disciples
00:10:18 --> 00:10:20 do not do religion
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 for show.
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 We are faithful
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 in our marriage.
00:10:25 --> 00:10:25 We are people
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 of our word.
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 We love
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 even our enemies.
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 Like Helen Roosevelt.
00:10:33 --> 00:10:35 We are not preoccupied
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 by the worries
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 and anxieties
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 of this life.
00:10:38 --> 00:10:40 Our greatest ambition
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 is Jesus
00:10:41 --> 00:10:43 and his kingdom.
00:10:45 --> 00:10:47 If you go to Matthew 16,
00:10:47 --> 00:10:49 24 to 26,
00:10:49 --> 00:10:51 this is what Jesus says.
00:10:52 --> 00:10:54 If I can tap that,
00:10:54 --> 00:10:54 16.
00:11:03 --> 00:11:05 Jesus said to his disciples,
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 discipleship,
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 if anyone would come
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 after me,
00:11:08 --> 00:11:10 he must deny himself
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 and take up his cross
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 and follow me.
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 For whoever wants
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 to save his life
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 will lose it.
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 But whoever loses
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 his life for me
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 will find it.
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 What good will it be
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 for a man
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 if he gains
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 the whole world
00:11:25 --> 00:11:27 yet forfeits his soul?

00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 give in exchange

00:11:34 --> 00:11:34 Discipleship
00:11:34 --> 00:11:37 involves
00:11:37 --> 00:11:39 Jesus.
00:11:39 --> 00:11:41 This is a disciple
00:11:41 --> 00:11:41 of Jesus.
00:11:42 --> 00:11:44 Jesus is everything
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 to this disciple.
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 Global mission
00:11:47 --> 00:11:49 is discipleship.
00:11:50 --> 00:11:52 You cannot disciple
00:11:52 --> 00:11:52 the nations
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 unless, of course,
00:11:54 --> 00:11:54 you yourself
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 are a disciple
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 of Jesus.
00:11:57 --> 00:11:59 You cannot call
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 other people
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 to give up
00:12:01 --> 00:12:03 everything for Jesus
00:12:03 --> 00:12:05 if you yourself
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 are not doing it.
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 The reason for mission,
00:12:10 --> 00:12:12 the content of mission,
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 and lastly,
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 the promise of mission.
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 Verse 20.
00:12:21 --> 00:12:23 Jesus says,
00:12:24 --> 00:12:24 go into the world
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 to make disciples
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 and surely
00:12:26 --> 00:12:28 I am with you
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 always
00:12:29 --> 00:12:31 to the very end
00:12:31 --> 00:12:33 of the age.
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 The promise
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 is the presence
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 of Jesus.
00:12:39 --> 00:12:41 We need to remember
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 that global mission
00:12:42 --> 00:12:45 is Jesus' mission.
00:12:46 --> 00:12:48 It has always been
00:12:48 --> 00:12:50 and it will always be.
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 Jesus continues
00:12:51 --> 00:12:53 to be at work
00:12:53 --> 00:12:54 in the world today,
