Glimpses of Glory God's King

00:00:03 --> 00:00:07 We need to cut the Bible reading short because I needed some more time to preach this morning.
00:00:09 --> 00:00:10 I've been away.
00:00:12 --> 00:00:15 This time, in fact, this time last week I was in Dubai.
00:00:16 --> 00:00:18 It's a remarkable city if you've ever been there.
00:00:19 --> 00:00:21 30 years ago, Dubai was a desert.
00:00:21 --> 00:00:25 I mean, it still is, but it's now this city built on a desert.
00:00:25 --> 00:00:32 And as you come into land, it's like sand, sand, sand, sand, sand, and then this city.
00:00:33 --> 00:00:35 It's an amazing place.
00:00:36 --> 00:00:38 It is a picture of success.
00:00:38 --> 00:00:40 Three and a half million people live there now.
00:00:41 --> 00:00:47 It has 13 billionaires, 202 centimillionaires, and 68 millionaires.
00:00:49 --> 00:00:54 In the space of four minutes, I saw four Lamborghinis drive past me.
00:00:56 --> 00:01:01 90% of the population are expats from all over the world seeking their fortune.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:08 If you lose your job in Dubai and you're an expat, you've got 28 days to depart the country.
00:01:08 --> 00:01:09 That's it.
00:01:09 --> 00:01:11 They don't have any hangers on there at all.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:14 So how would you do it?
00:01:15 --> 00:01:16 That's how Dubai did it.
00:01:16 --> 00:01:16 How would you do it?
00:01:16 --> 00:01:20 Well, what I mean by that is how would you plan your success?
00:01:21 --> 00:01:30 Imagine you gather some experts into the room, a bunch of friends, and with the goal to put
00:01:30 --> 00:01:35 together a strategic plan for a successful life for you.
00:01:37 --> 00:01:40 That you would leave the world a better place.
00:01:40 --> 00:01:43 How would you, what would your strategic plan include?
00:01:44 --> 00:01:45 There you go.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:46 I'm going to give you one minute.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:48 Turn to the people around you and come up with a list.
00:01:48 --> 00:02:18 Thank you.
00:02:18 --> 00:02:36 All right.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:36 That'll do.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:39 The strategic plan is amongst us.
00:02:39 --> 00:02:43 Struggle to do that without a whiteboard and some sticky notes.
00:02:44 --> 00:02:47 But the rest of us, hopefully you come up with something.
00:02:47 --> 00:02:51 If you've just joined us, you've just tuned in, we are working our way through the Old
00:02:51 --> 00:02:52 Testament book of Isaiah.
00:02:52 --> 00:02:54 It's about 800 years before Jesus.
00:02:54 --> 00:02:56 So we're winding history back a fair bit.
00:02:56 --> 00:03:08 Isaiah begins with God bringing a message of judgment to his fruitless and faithless people
00:03:08 --> 00:03:12 because of their rebellion against him and because of the way that they have been treating
00:03:12 --> 00:03:13 one another.
00:03:13 --> 00:03:21 They have existed in a life of comfort and ease and wealth and they have drifted for God and
00:03:21 --> 00:03:22 his priorities in life.
00:03:23 --> 00:03:29 And this judgment can only be averted if they repent of their sin.
00:03:29 --> 00:03:37 And we see that in Isaiah 6 when Isaiah himself is confronted with the holiness and the glory of God.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:43 Amid the judgment on a faithless people, there is a promise of mercy.
00:03:44 --> 00:03:51 As we see here, God raises up a new king who will lead with wisdom and bring justice and hope.
00:03:51 --> 00:03:56 But there are some surprises with God's king.
00:03:57 --> 00:03:58 He's an unexpected king.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:04 And that theme runs throughout Isaiah, but we see glimpses of it here.
00:04:04 --> 00:04:08 So if you've got the St. Paul's app in front of you, you'll notice there's four points today.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:12 Justice of the king, wisdom of the king, identity of the king, and follow the king.
00:04:12 --> 00:04:17 So if you've got the app, that'll be a way to keep track of where we're up to.
00:04:17 --> 00:04:19 So first of all, the justice of the king.
00:04:19 --> 00:04:24 Look at verse 4 in Isaiah 11 that was just read out to us.
00:04:24 --> 00:04:24 It says,
00:04:25 --> 00:04:42 When it says in verse 4,
00:04:42 --> 00:04:48 He will judge the needy, it doesn't mean there that he will condemn the needy.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:55 It literally means he will make things just for the needy and for the poor.
00:04:55 --> 00:05:03 The poor in verse 4 means not just economically poor, but the downtrodden, the oppressed of the world,
00:05:03 --> 00:05:05 people who are powerless.
00:05:05 --> 00:05:09 When it says he will give decisions for the poor of the earth,
00:05:09 --> 00:05:16 it means that he will use his power to stand in for the poor and the oppressed
00:05:16 --> 00:05:20 and make decisions on behalf of the poor and the oppressed, the downtrodden.
00:05:20 --> 00:05:28 He will use his power and authority for the sake, if you like, of the underlings,
00:05:28 --> 00:05:30 the minority, the oppressed, the poor.
00:05:30 --> 00:05:36 Now we could be tempted to view here, just on a surface reading of this verse,
00:05:37 --> 00:05:40 to think that this king of God, God's king,
00:05:41 --> 00:05:45 is little more than a great civil servant crusading for social justice.
00:05:46 --> 00:05:52 What overturns that view is verses 6 to 8.
00:05:52 --> 00:06:22 What those verses are saying is that the promised king
00:06:22 --> 00:06:29 is going to do a whole lot more than just make the world a better place for some.
00:06:31 --> 00:06:33 He's not just about social justice.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:42 This king is going to rid the world of death, disease, violence, suffering, fear.
00:06:42 --> 00:06:44 He's going to make everything right.
00:06:44 --> 00:06:52 He's going to bring ultimate reconciliation, renewal and rest to the whole created order.
00:06:54 --> 00:06:58 Now if these verses at all seem familiar to you,
00:06:58 --> 00:07:00 he's like, hang on a minute, I've read this somewhere before.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:10 It's probably because Isaiah 11 is read throughout the world every year at Christmas time.
00:07:10 --> 00:07:18 The Christmas story is the God's king of Isaiah 11,
00:07:18 --> 00:07:22 who will identify with the poor and make everything right,
00:07:22 --> 00:07:24 is in fact Jesus of Nazareth.
00:07:25 --> 00:07:32 The Christmas story reveals the extent to which God's king would in fact identify
00:07:32 --> 00:07:34 with the poor and the oppressed.
00:07:34 --> 00:07:40 Christmas declares that God the son, the Messiah, the Christ,
00:07:40 --> 00:07:45 God's king here in Isaiah 11, was born into a poor family.
00:07:46 --> 00:07:53 He did not enter the world as a philosopher or as a general leading a great army,
00:07:54 --> 00:07:56 but as the son of a carpenter.
00:07:58 --> 00:08:00 And he worked as a carpenter himself.
00:08:00 --> 00:08:04 His mother was a peasant girl from a poor village, an obscure village.
00:08:04 --> 00:08:11 His ministry was mostly directed towards the poor, the oppressed, the marginalized of society,
00:08:12 --> 00:08:17 as he preached the gospel, raised the dead and healed the sick and lifted the downtrodden.
00:08:20 --> 00:08:29 At the very least, to follow Jesus means that his priorities become our priorities.
00:08:29 --> 00:08:42 However, we do not only need to be concerned about the poor and the oppressed in our world right now,
00:08:42 --> 00:08:45 as those who have allegiance to Jesus,
00:08:45 --> 00:08:48 but we need to do it up close.
00:08:50 --> 00:08:55 Jesus didn't commute in to help the poor and the oppressed.
00:08:55 --> 00:09:01 In a non-patronizing way, the church,
00:09:03 --> 00:09:07 but I would argue more specifically individual Christians,
00:09:07 --> 00:09:13 need to figure out how to come alongside and walk close with the poor and the oppressed of our world.
00:09:13 --> 00:09:20 At the very least, the life and the ministry of Jesus points us in that direction.
00:09:22 --> 00:09:28 The second thing we see here about God's king is his wisdom.
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 Have a look at verse 2.
00:09:30 --> 00:09:36 The spirit of the Lord will rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
00:09:36 --> 00:09:41 the spirit of counsel and of might, the spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord,
00:09:41 --> 00:09:45 and he will delight in the fear of the Lord.
00:09:46 --> 00:09:50 The word counsel there is the same idea as wisdom.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:55 That is, this king, we are told, has wisdom and might.
00:09:56 --> 00:10:03 That simply means that he not only has the power to do what needs to be done,
00:10:03 --> 00:10:07 but he knows exactly what needs to be done
00:10:07 --> 00:10:11 and the best way to achieve what needs to be done.
00:10:12 --> 00:10:17 And then in verse 3, it describes his wisdom in a surprising way.
00:10:17 --> 00:10:23 It says, he will not judge by what he sees with his eyes
00:10:23 --> 00:10:27 or decides by what he hears with his ears.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:37 His justice and his wisdom come together in a very surprising way.
00:10:38 --> 00:10:40 That is, he doesn't act.
00:10:41 --> 00:10:45 He doesn't decide the way we act and we decide.
00:10:47 --> 00:10:50 That is, by mere outward appearance.
00:10:52 --> 00:10:54 He doesn't look at the surface of things.
00:10:55 --> 00:10:59 He sees things the way they actually are.
00:11:02 --> 00:11:06 Another way of saying that is that the wisdom of God's king here
00:11:06 --> 00:11:09 turns the wisdom of the world on its head.
00:11:09 --> 00:11:16 The wisdom of God's king is a violation of worldly wisdom.
00:11:17 --> 00:11:20 God's king is going to bring justice and reconciliation,
00:11:21 --> 00:11:24 renewal and rest for all of God's people
00:11:24 --> 00:11:29 in an orderly, remade world,
00:11:29 --> 00:11:31 but not as we would expect him to.
00:11:31 --> 00:11:37 I asked you a couple of minutes ago,
00:11:37 --> 00:11:40 what was your strategy to become successful
00:11:40 --> 00:11:43 to make an impact in this world for generations to come?
00:11:45 --> 00:11:47 What was in your list?
00:11:47 --> 00:11:50 I wonder,
00:11:51 --> 00:11:55 did it include being born in a backwater town in a feed trough?
00:11:58 --> 00:12:01 Did it include staying away from major cultural and commercial centres
00:12:01 --> 00:12:03 and spending your time in little villages?
00:12:04 --> 00:12:07 Did it include staying out of every network
00:12:07 --> 00:12:10 of political, social and academic power?
00:12:10 --> 00:12:12 In fact,
00:12:12 --> 00:12:16 did it include making sure that you knew no one in any of those networks?
00:12:18 --> 00:12:24 Did it include getting executed in disgrace at a young age,
00:12:24 --> 00:12:26 just as you started to become known?
00:12:28 --> 00:12:32 Was any of that in your strategic plan to change the world?
00:12:34 --> 00:12:38 He turns the wisdom of this world on its head.
00:12:40 --> 00:12:43 This is the wisdom of God.
00:12:46 --> 00:12:51 2 years since that plan was put into effect,
00:12:51 --> 00:12:55 Jesus is still the most influential person who has ever lived.
00:12:57 --> 00:13:00 A person of impeccable character
00:13:00 --> 00:13:02 that today you still can't pull him apart.
00:13:04 --> 00:13:09 One quarter of this world centre their entire lives on him.
00:13:10 --> 00:13:16 His teaching is seen as the single most influential body of thought
00:13:16 --> 00:13:18 in the history of humanity.
00:13:20 --> 00:13:22 Even a few major civilisations
00:13:22 --> 00:13:28 have their existence based solely on his person and his teaching.
00:13:28 --> 00:13:32 That is way more successful
00:13:32 --> 00:13:35 than Cristiano Ronaldo,
00:13:36 --> 00:13:38 who is the world's biggest social media influencer
00:13:38 --> 00:13:42 with 573 million followers on Instagram.
00:13:43 --> 00:13:45 Within 100 years, he'll be forgotten,
00:13:46 --> 00:13:48 except by a few soccer tragics.
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 That's nothing.
00:13:52 --> 00:14:00 The wisdom of God makes the wisdom of this world look foolish.
00:14:01 --> 00:14:02 And in the wisdom of the world,
00:14:02 --> 00:14:04 the wisdom of God looks foolish.
00:14:07 --> 00:14:09 Now, there's another way here
00:14:09 --> 00:14:12 that the wisdom of God's king
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 turns our wisdom on its head.
00:14:13 --> 00:14:19 It has to do with his miraculous work in the world.
00:14:21 --> 00:14:23 There is a miracle in these verses,
00:14:23 --> 00:14:25 and I want to pick it up a little bit later.
00:14:26 --> 00:14:27 But let me just say,
00:14:27 --> 00:14:31 miracles cut into another paradigm
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 of the wisdom of our world.
00:14:32 --> 00:14:36 It makes our society
00:14:36 --> 00:14:38 think that Christianity
00:14:38 --> 00:14:40 and anything religious and supernatural
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 or spiritual
00:14:41 --> 00:14:43 just makes it look stupid.
00:14:43 --> 00:14:45 That's the wisdom of our world.
00:14:46 --> 00:14:48 One of the paradigms of our society
00:14:48 --> 00:14:51 is that everything has to have
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 a scientific explanation,
00:14:53 --> 00:14:55 which means ultimately the miracles can't happen.
00:14:56 --> 00:14:58 The supernatural doesn't exist.
00:14:58 --> 00:15:02 Many parts of the Christian church
00:15:02 --> 00:15:04 in the Western world
00:15:04 --> 00:15:08 have responded to our world
00:15:08 --> 00:15:09 and the wisdom of our world
00:15:09 --> 00:15:13 in an attempt to align itself
00:15:13 --> 00:15:14 and to win over the world
00:15:14 --> 00:15:16 by, in fact, downplaying
00:15:16 --> 00:15:19 the supernatural in the Bible and in life.
00:15:20 --> 00:15:22 And the Western church has done this
00:15:22 --> 00:15:25 a bit over 100 years now
00:15:25 --> 00:15:28 that has been roaring in the Western church.
00:15:28 --> 00:15:32 Instead, what the Western church
00:15:32 --> 00:15:33 has wanted to do
00:15:33 --> 00:15:36 is highlight the ethical principles
00:15:36 --> 00:15:38 of the Bible and the Christian faith,
00:15:39 --> 00:15:41 emphasizing love and social justice
00:15:41 --> 00:15:43 over the supernatural work of God.
00:15:46 --> 00:15:48 What's interesting is
00:15:48 --> 00:15:49 that the churches
00:15:49 --> 00:15:52 that have embraced the wisdom of this world
00:15:52 --> 00:15:55 and rejected the supernatural of God,
00:15:55 --> 00:15:57 His work in this world,
00:15:57 --> 00:15:59 are in steep decline.
00:16:00 --> 00:16:02 Steep decline.
00:16:03 --> 00:16:05 But supernatural Christianity
00:16:05 --> 00:16:08 is exploding in the world.
00:16:10 --> 00:16:11 The Christian faith has grown
00:16:11 --> 00:16:14 from 5% Christian
00:16:14 --> 00:16:16 to 50% Christian
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 in 100 years in Africa.
00:16:19 --> 00:16:22 South Korea went from 0%
00:16:22 --> 00:16:24 to 40% Christian
00:16:24 --> 00:16:26 in less than 100 years.
00:16:26 --> 00:16:27 The same trajectory
00:16:27 --> 00:16:29 is happening in China right now.
00:16:29 --> 00:16:30 God's wisdom and work
00:16:30 --> 00:16:31 is exploding
00:16:31 --> 00:16:33 in the supernatural world.
00:16:36 --> 00:16:37 Let me tell you one story
00:16:37 --> 00:16:40 from my time in Africa recently.
00:16:40 --> 00:16:43 Pastor from Northern Sudan.
00:16:43 --> 00:16:44 If you want to be a Christian,
00:16:45 --> 00:16:46 being a Christian in Northern Sudan
00:16:46 --> 00:16:48 is very hard.
00:16:49 --> 00:16:50 So this is a pastor
00:16:50 --> 00:16:51 in Northern Sudan
00:16:51 --> 00:16:54 who told of growing up
00:16:54 --> 00:16:55 with two things
00:16:55 --> 00:16:56 that deeply shaped
00:16:56 --> 00:16:57 his entire existence.
00:16:58 --> 00:16:59 The Quran
00:16:59 --> 00:17:01 in one hand
00:17:01 --> 00:17:02 Christian
00:17:02 --> 00:17:03 and a deep hatred
00:17:03 --> 00:17:03 from anyone
00:17:03 --> 00:17:05 from Southern Sudan
00:17:05 --> 00:17:06 and especially Christians
00:17:06 --> 00:17:07 from Southern Sudan.
00:17:07 --> 00:17:09 A deep, deep, deep hatred.
00:17:12 --> 00:17:14 He was a radicalised Muslim.
00:17:15 --> 00:17:16 One day
00:17:16 --> 00:17:16 a new student
00:17:16 --> 00:17:18 joined his school.
00:17:20 --> 00:17:20 He was a Christian
00:17:20 --> 00:17:21 from Southern Sudan.
00:17:21 --> 00:17:25 And so with his friends
00:17:25 --> 00:17:26 they abducted him.
00:17:28 --> 00:17:29 They beat him.
00:17:29 --> 00:17:30 They stabbed him.
00:17:30 --> 00:17:31 They stole a car.
00:17:31 --> 00:17:33 They ran over him.
00:17:34 --> 00:17:34 They killed him
00:17:34 --> 00:17:36 and dumped his body
00:17:36 --> 00:17:38 in a remote area
00:17:38 --> 00:17:39 in the bush.
00:17:40 --> 00:17:41 Such was the depth
00:17:41 --> 00:17:42 of his hatred
00:17:42 --> 00:17:43 even as a school kid.
00:17:46 --> 00:17:47 Later in life
00:17:47 --> 00:17:50 as still as a Muslim
00:17:50 --> 00:17:52 a relative of his
00:17:52 --> 00:17:53 was near death
00:17:53 --> 00:17:54 in hospital.
00:17:55 --> 00:17:56 Like this relative
00:17:56 --> 00:17:57 had been dying
00:17:57 --> 00:17:57 for some time
00:17:57 --> 00:17:58 and they were
00:17:58 --> 00:18:00 it was the end
00:18:00 --> 00:18:00 the family were told
00:18:00 --> 00:18:01 to gather.
00:18:02 --> 00:18:03 Your relative is dying.
00:18:03 --> 00:18:04 They're there.
00:18:04 --> 00:18:04 They're unconscious
00:18:04 --> 00:18:05 in the hospital bed.
00:18:05 --> 00:18:07 The family has gathered around.
00:18:07 --> 00:18:08 There's nothing more
00:18:08 --> 00:18:08 they can do.
00:18:09 --> 00:18:09 And they said
00:18:09 --> 00:18:10 in the midst of that scene
00:18:10 --> 00:18:11 two Christian missionaries
00:18:11 --> 00:18:12 walked in.
00:18:14 --> 00:18:15 Before they knew it
00:18:15 --> 00:18:17 they laid hands
00:18:17 --> 00:18:18 on our relative
00:18:18 --> 00:18:19 and prayed.
00:18:19 --> 00:18:21 and as soon
00:18:21 --> 00:18:21 as they said
00:18:21 --> 00:18:22 amen
00:18:22 --> 00:18:24 our relative
00:18:24 --> 00:18:25 sat up in bed
00:18:25 --> 00:18:27 and said
00:18:27 --> 00:18:28 what's going on?
00:18:30 --> 00:18:31 Pulled all the tubes
00:18:31 --> 00:18:31 out
00:18:31 --> 00:18:32 and walked out
00:18:32 --> 00:18:32 of hospital.
00:18:35 --> 00:18:36 He said
00:18:36 --> 00:18:36 that
00:18:36 --> 00:18:38 profoundly
00:18:38 --> 00:18:39 impacted my life
00:18:39 --> 00:18:41 but not immediately.
00:18:43 --> 00:18:43 Ended up
00:18:43 --> 00:18:44 at university
00:18:44 --> 00:18:47 became a Christian
00:18:47 --> 00:18:48 at university
00:18:48 --> 00:18:49 went home
00:18:49 --> 00:18:50 told his parents
00:18:50 --> 00:18:50 that he's now
00:18:50 --> 00:18:51 a Christian
00:18:51 --> 00:18:53 and they disowned him.
00:18:56 --> 00:18:57 They disowned him.
00:18:58 --> 00:19:00 And when they disowned you
00:19:00 --> 00:19:01 as a Muslim
00:19:01 --> 00:19:03 in northern Sudan
00:19:03 --> 00:19:05 they hold a funeral
00:19:05 --> 00:19:05 for you.
00:19:07 --> 00:19:08 Dug a hole out
00:19:08 --> 00:19:09 in the cemetery.
00:19:09 --> 00:19:10 They have a coffin
00:19:10 --> 00:19:11 that they parade
00:19:11 --> 00:19:12 through the streets.
00:19:12 --> 00:19:13 There's wailing
00:19:13 --> 00:19:14 and mourning
00:19:14 --> 00:19:16 and they bury you.
00:19:19 --> 00:19:19 He said
00:19:19 --> 00:19:20 he found himself
00:19:20 --> 00:19:24 going to his family
00:19:24 --> 00:19:25 and saying
00:19:25 --> 00:19:26 trying to convince them
00:19:26 --> 00:19:28 that Christ
00:19:28 --> 00:19:28 is the way
00:19:28 --> 00:19:29 and they said
00:19:29 --> 00:19:30 you're dead to us
00:19:30 --> 00:19:31 you don't exist.
00:19:32 --> 00:19:33 And then he found himself
00:19:33 --> 00:19:35 early one evening
00:19:35 --> 00:19:38 by standing
00:19:38 --> 00:19:39 in the cemetery
00:19:39 --> 00:19:40 looking at his grave.
00:19:40 --> 00:19:42 tombstone there
00:19:42 --> 00:19:43 date of birth
00:19:43 --> 00:19:44 date of death
00:19:44 --> 00:19:45 he's there
00:19:45 --> 00:19:46 looking at it
00:19:46 --> 00:19:47 and as he's standing
00:19:47 --> 00:19:48 there looking at it
00:19:48 --> 00:19:50 he felt a hand
00:19:50 --> 00:19:50 on his shoulder
00:19:50 --> 00:19:52 he looks around
00:19:52 --> 00:19:53 and no one's there
00:19:53 --> 00:19:54 and he heard a voice
00:19:54 --> 00:19:56 audibly say to him
00:19:56 --> 00:19:58 my tomb is empty
00:19:58 --> 00:20:00 and so is yours.
00:20:02 --> 00:20:03 Preach the gospel.
00:20:05 --> 00:20:05 He said
00:20:05 --> 00:20:06 for that moment
00:20:06 --> 00:20:06 that's what I did
00:20:06 --> 00:20:08 I preached the gospel
00:20:08 --> 00:20:09 became a pastor
00:20:09 --> 00:20:10 church planter
00:20:10 --> 00:20:11 evangelist
00:20:11 --> 00:20:12 he's still doing that
00:20:12 --> 00:20:13 daily now
00:20:13 --> 00:20:14 right now
00:20:14 --> 00:20:16 in Sudan
00:20:16 --> 00:20:18 a great fear
00:20:18 --> 00:20:19 of his life
00:20:19 --> 00:20:20 well he doesn't fear
00:20:20 --> 00:20:20 his life
00:20:20 --> 00:20:22 but a great danger
00:20:22 --> 00:20:23 to his existence
00:20:23 --> 00:20:24 right now.
00:20:26 --> 00:20:26 He said
00:20:26 --> 00:20:27 he was preaching
00:20:27 --> 00:20:29 at this event
00:20:29 --> 00:20:30 calling people
00:20:30 --> 00:20:31 to respond
00:20:31 --> 00:20:32 to Christ
00:20:32 --> 00:20:33 and as he did
00:20:33 --> 00:20:34 he came down the front
