00:00:00 --> 00:00:08 We are in a season of church called Glimpses of Glory and Grace.
00:00:09 --> 00:00:11 We're in the book of Isaiah.
00:00:13 --> 00:00:21 700 years before the life of Jesus, a man called Isaiah spoke God's words to the kings of Jerusalem.
00:00:22 --> 00:00:27 They were words of judgment, predicting the nation's rebellion against God.
00:00:27 --> 00:00:37 They were also words of hope in a redeemer who God would raise up to pay for the sin of God's people and turn away God's wrath.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:48 Isaiah's words in the impact that he made outlived the kings that he served and even Isaiah himself.
00:00:48 --> 00:00:58 Isaiah's words spoke directly into the spiritual needs of God's people and they speak to our needs too.
00:00:59 --> 00:01:05 These chapters are glimpses of God as glorious and gracious.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:10 All people need something more glorious than what they can find in this world.
00:01:11 --> 00:01:16 And all people need grace if God is who he says he is.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:27 He's so wonderful and amazing and perfect and powerful and mighty and majestic that we're going to need his help.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:34 If we, the broken people of this broken world, are going to come to him.
00:01:36 --> 00:01:41 You and I need Isaiah, this book, in our life.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:51 Theologian Tim Chester says that Isaiah is like a bridge.
00:01:51 --> 00:02:07 A bridge between our side of history and the cross of Jesus Christ, reaching back to the origins of a nation called Israel, who God chose to be his people.
00:02:08 --> 00:02:17 Isaiah is a bridge, a connection for those who find forgiveness in freedom in the Messiah in 2023.
00:02:17 --> 00:02:23 But also for those who knew the Messiah only as a promise.
00:02:24 --> 00:02:35 A gracious promise that one day he would save the then divided nation of Israel and Judah through his coming Messiah King.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:41 Every year we quote Isaiah at Easter time and at Christmas.
00:02:41 --> 00:02:49 It's because of these many glimpses that Isaiah gives us of who this Messiah is going to be.
00:02:49 --> 00:02:50 What his nature is going to be.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:52 What he's going to do.
00:02:52 --> 00:02:53 What his kingdom is going to look like.
00:02:54 --> 00:02:55 Even how he's going to be born.
00:02:55 --> 00:02:56 How he's going to die.
00:02:58 --> 00:03:01 Isaiah has unrivaled depth and clarity.
00:03:02 --> 00:03:04 It's the coolest pair of sunnies in the Old Testament.
00:03:04 --> 00:03:09 That we get to look through and see who the Messiah is going to be.
00:03:11 --> 00:03:24 So in this series you're going to see that the God of the Old Testament that we hear about in Isaiah is the same God that in history is recorded in the New Testament.
00:03:26 --> 00:03:27 He is most holy.
00:03:29 --> 00:03:32 He brings justice and fair judgment for sin.
00:03:32 --> 00:03:37 He is by nature merciful, loving and compassionate.
00:03:39 --> 00:03:41 Providing hope to all nations.
00:03:41 --> 00:03:44 I honestly can't wait to share more of Isaiah.
00:03:45 --> 00:03:47 The bridge of Isaiah with you.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:51 As we see glimpses of this glorious and gracious God.
00:03:51 --> 00:03:56 So we're going to start in chapters 1 to 5.
00:03:58 --> 00:04:03 And then as we go through today we're going to get to Isaiah 6.
00:04:03 --> 00:04:07 And we're going to spend most of our time there in Isaiah 6 as Anne has read out.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:07 Thank you Anne.
00:04:09 --> 00:04:11 So let's open up our Bible.
00:04:11 --> 00:04:13 Make sure we've got Isaiah open.
00:04:13 --> 00:04:14 Turn to chapter 1.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:20 And I'm going to, no, I'm not going to read the whole thing.
00:04:21 --> 00:04:25 We're going to start our journey and step across this bridge.
00:04:27 --> 00:04:31 Isaiah is a bit like watching an opera.
00:04:31 --> 00:04:32 Or a symphony.
00:04:34 --> 00:04:35 Or a musical.
00:04:37 --> 00:04:40 Like these, Isaiah begins with an overture.
00:04:40 --> 00:04:46 An overture is a musical preview.
00:04:46 --> 00:04:52 It contains all, many of the melodies that are to come in the performance.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:56 The emotional movements of the story to come.
00:04:57 --> 00:05:00 We might not know why the tune sounds like that yet.
00:05:02 --> 00:05:07 But the overture gives us that feeling and the gravity of what's going to come next.
00:05:07 --> 00:05:08 Just without all the details.
00:05:08 --> 00:05:12 It opens our ears and focuses our minds.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:18 So let's listen to three melodies that we're going to hear through Isaiah.
00:05:19 --> 00:05:22 In Isaiah's prophetic overture.
00:05:24 --> 00:05:35 The first melody is this intimidating and fearsome, unstoppable melody of judgment and exile.
00:05:35 --> 00:05:37 God himself says,
00:05:38 --> 00:05:43 I reared children and brought them up, but they have rebelled against me.
00:05:45 --> 00:05:48 God pronounces judgment after judgment.
00:05:50 --> 00:05:52 Woes on his people.
00:05:52 --> 00:05:59 He foreshadows a time of loss and pain in chapters 1 to 5.
00:06:00 --> 00:06:02 Like it's already happening to Israel.
00:06:02 --> 00:06:06 He even calls Israel by two awful names.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:08 Sodom and Gomorrah.
00:06:09 --> 00:06:14 Two cities that were judged for their exceptional wickedness.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:18 As he was to those two cities.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:23 God is weary of Israel's wickedness and empty prayers.
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 This melody is bleak.
00:06:28 --> 00:06:35 And Isaiah uses imagery to help us understand how bleak it is.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:39 These are the different instruments that are playing this melody.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 Here are a few.
00:06:44 --> 00:06:50 Their fall be like the shattering of a mighty falling tree.
00:06:50 --> 00:06:55 Like seductive women who will have their beauty taken away.
00:06:56 --> 00:07:01 Like staggering drunks who are deceived and pushed by evil people into pits.
00:07:02 --> 00:07:04 Like fools led by children.
00:07:05 --> 00:07:07 They're going to wildly go astray.
00:07:09 --> 00:07:11 Isaiah even sings.
00:07:12 --> 00:07:14 Told you it was a musical.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:18 He sings this mournful love song.
00:07:20 --> 00:07:24 I will sing for the one I love about a song about his vineyard.
00:07:24 --> 00:07:27 My loved one had a vineyard on a fertile hillside.
00:07:28 --> 00:07:31 The vineyard of the Lord Almighty is the nation of Israel.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:34 And the people of Judah are the vines he delighted in.
00:07:35 --> 00:07:37 He looked for justice but saw bloodshed.
00:07:38 --> 00:07:42 For righteousness but heard cries of distress.
00:07:42 --> 00:07:44 Can you hear the melody?
00:07:46 --> 00:07:49 Can you hear the main theme of this overture?
00:07:49 --> 00:07:50 It's terrifying.
00:07:53 --> 00:07:58 But interwoven with woe after woe, horror after horror,
00:07:58 --> 00:08:02 are these two sweet melodies.
00:08:02 --> 00:08:06 And as we go through Isaiah, as you read through Isaiah yourself,
00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 and as we explore it as a church,
00:08:08 --> 00:08:10 I want to encourage you to be looking for these
00:08:10 --> 00:08:15 and listening for these two melodies in the symphony of Isaiah.
00:08:15 --> 00:08:20 And the first is the soft call of grace.
00:08:22 --> 00:08:26 In chapter one, we can see that there is forgiveness.
00:08:27 --> 00:08:30 There is a chance for Israel and Judah,
00:08:31 --> 00:08:33 God's people, to turn things around.
00:08:33 --> 00:08:36 God says to them,
00:08:36 --> 00:08:38 though your sins are like scarlet,
00:08:39 --> 00:08:41 they shall be white as snow.
00:08:43 --> 00:08:45 Though they are red as crimson,
00:08:45 --> 00:08:47 they shall be like wool.
00:08:48 --> 00:08:50 And how will God do this?
00:08:52 --> 00:08:58 How could God be leading Israel to ruin
00:08:58 --> 00:09:02 and also make them pure before him?
00:09:04 --> 00:09:06 Well, we get a glimpse of a name in this tune.
00:09:06 --> 00:09:08 In chapter four, verse two,
00:09:08 --> 00:09:11 the name of this redeemer,
00:09:11 --> 00:09:13 this one who will save,
00:09:13 --> 00:09:16 is called the branch of the Lord,
00:09:16 --> 00:09:18 one who will bring shelter and cleansing
00:09:18 --> 00:09:21 to the people of this broken,
00:09:22 --> 00:09:24 wayward vineyard.
00:09:24 --> 00:09:27 And then melody number two,
00:09:28 --> 00:09:32 after the chords crash with a crescendo
00:09:32 --> 00:09:37 and there's the empty space after in this overture.
00:09:38 --> 00:09:40 There's these ever so quiet promises
00:09:40 --> 00:09:43 of eternal hope.
00:09:43 --> 00:09:48 Isaiah 1.26 says that there will be a day
00:09:48 --> 00:09:50 where Jerusalem,
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 the capital of Israel,
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 will be restored forever.
00:09:56 --> 00:09:56 And later,
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 in chapter two,
00:09:59 --> 00:10:01 that every nation will gather
00:10:01 --> 00:10:03 to live for God there
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 in joy.
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 In the last days,
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 the mountain of the Lord's temple
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 will be established
00:10:09 --> 00:10:11 as the highest of the mountains.
00:10:11 --> 00:10:13 It will be exalted above the hills
00:10:13 --> 00:10:15 and all nations will stream to it.
00:10:15 --> 00:10:17 Many peoples will come to it and say,
00:10:18 --> 00:10:20 come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
00:10:20 --> 00:10:22 to the temple of the God of Jacob.
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 He will teach us his ways
00:10:23 --> 00:10:26 so that we may walk in his paths.
00:10:27 --> 00:10:30 A day of restoration is coming.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:36 One to five of Isaiah,
00:10:37 --> 00:10:37 the overture,
00:10:39 --> 00:10:42 promises that Isaiah as a whole
00:10:42 --> 00:10:44 is going to sound like overwhelming judgment,
00:10:45 --> 00:10:48 especially for our ears
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 thousands of years later.
00:10:50 --> 00:10:53 But keep listening to those recurring melodies
00:10:53 --> 00:10:56 of the grace of God
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 and his promise of forgiveness
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 and eternal hope.
00:10:58 --> 00:11:01 God will bring justice and redemption
00:11:01 --> 00:11:05 for his multi-ethnic people
00:11:05 --> 00:11:08 and he will declare them
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 holy.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 Holy.
00:11:16 --> 00:11:18 But now the movement of the symphony
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 unfolds in chapter six.
00:11:20 --> 00:11:24 The orchestra crescendos into something new
00:11:24 --> 00:11:28 and the curtains part
00:11:28 --> 00:11:30 and the cast come out
00:11:30 --> 00:11:32 to start the first number
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 and so we see
00:11:33 --> 00:11:36 what will happen next.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 So I'm going to pray
00:11:38 --> 00:11:40 before we explore further
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 in Isaiah chapter six.
00:11:42 --> 00:11:42 Let's pray.
00:11:45 --> 00:11:45 God,
00:11:45 --> 00:11:49 you have all authority.
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 You're gracious
00:11:52 --> 00:11:54 and you bring hope.
00:11:55 --> 00:11:57 So I ask that you would graciously change us
00:11:57 --> 00:11:59 through the words of this old book.
00:12:00 --> 00:12:03 Speak to us as if promised by your Holy Spirit
00:12:03 --> 00:12:07 so that we see you for who you've always been,
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 who you were to Israel,
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 who you were to Isaiah
00:12:10 --> 00:12:13 and who you will always be
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 to us.
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 Amen.
00:12:17 --> 00:12:17 Amen.
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 When I first moved to Sydney,
00:12:21 --> 00:12:23 it was mid-2000s
00:12:23 --> 00:12:25 and everyone I met
00:12:25 --> 00:12:27 when they were talking,
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 when I was getting to know them,
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 they would talk
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 about
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 a season of life
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 that came before
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 when I wasn't in Sydney
00:12:34 --> 00:12:36 and the season of life now
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 that I kind of knew
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 and understood.
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 Chatswood looked very different.
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 The train station
00:12:42 --> 00:12:44 was a totally different shape.
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 Right now,
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 I'd need a map
00:12:48 --> 00:12:50 of how it used to be
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 to try and remember it.
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 Everything is so different
00:12:52 --> 00:12:52 just over there.
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 Everyone I met
00:12:56 --> 00:12:59 when I came to Sydney,
00:12:59 --> 00:13:00 when I was getting to know them,
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 marked time
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 by talking about
00:13:03 --> 00:13:05 a season of life before,
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 something happened
00:13:07 --> 00:13:09 and life now.
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 And that event
00:13:10 --> 00:13:13 happened in 2001
00:13:13 --> 00:13:15 because people would say
00:13:15 --> 00:13:18 before September 11
00:13:18 --> 00:13:21 or after September 11.
00:13:26 --> 00:13:28 Terrorist attacks in the USA
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 changed the world
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 on September 11.
00:13:30 --> 00:13:35 If you're new to Chatswood,
00:13:35 --> 00:13:35 you might be hearing
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 the same thing.
00:13:37 --> 00:13:37 If you're new to Sydney,
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 you might hear
00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 people talk
00:13:40 --> 00:13:42 about a before COVID
00:13:42 --> 00:13:44 and an after COVID.
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 The event that's brought
00:13:48 --> 00:13:50 incredible insecurity
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 and anxiety.
00:13:53 --> 00:13:53 After COVID,
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 identities were
00:13:54 --> 00:13:56 changed,
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 redefined.
00:13:58 --> 00:13:59 After COVID,
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 everything is different
00:14:00 --> 00:14:02 and we will never
00:14:02 --> 00:14:03 be the same,
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 even if we might want
00:14:04 --> 00:14:05 everything to be
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 the same again.
00:14:09 --> 00:14:11 In Isaiah's time,
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 the southern kingdom
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 of Israel
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 had been reigned
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 over
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 by King Uzziah
00:14:16 --> 00:14:18 for 50 years.
00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 Judah had prospered.
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 The people
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 had followed God.
00:14:23 --> 00:14:25 They'd even have peace
00:14:25 --> 00:14:26 from war.
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 But a northern kingdom
00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 called Assyria
00:14:30 --> 00:14:32 rose up in great
00:14:32 --> 00:14:33 military power
00:14:33 --> 00:14:34 and began to
00:14:34 --> 00:14:35 annihilate
00:14:35 --> 00:14:37 some of the surrounding
00:14:37 --> 00:14:37 nations
00:14:37 --> 00:14:39 of Judah.
00:14:41 --> 00:14:42 But as long as
00:14:42 --> 00:14:43 King Uzziah
00:14:43 --> 00:14:44 was still alive,
00:14:45 --> 00:14:46 Judah had hope
00:14:46 --> 00:14:47 that they would be saved.
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 But as Judah
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 started to
00:14:52 --> 00:14:54 look elsewhere
00:14:54 --> 00:14:55 other than God
00:14:55 --> 00:14:57 for other powerful
00:14:57 --> 00:14:59 nations to trust,
00:15:02 --> 00:15:03 hope started
00:15:03 --> 00:15:03 to slide away
00:15:03 --> 00:15:06 and then it plummeted
00:15:06 --> 00:15:07 because Isaiah
00:15:07 --> 00:15:08 marks his time
00:15:08 --> 00:15:09 in chapter 6
00:15:09 --> 00:15:11 with this terrible event.
00:15:12 --> 00:15:13 In the year
00:15:13 --> 00:15:14 King Uzziah
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 died.
00:15:17 --> 00:15:18 Here's why you need
00:15:18 --> 00:15:19 to pay attention
00:15:19 --> 00:15:20 to Isaiah 6.
00:15:20 --> 00:15:22 In the year
00:15:22 --> 00:15:23 King Uzziah
00:15:23 --> 00:15:24 died,
00:15:24 --> 00:15:25 when fear
00:15:25 --> 00:15:25 was raining
00:15:25 --> 00:15:27 and everyone
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 began to realise
00:15:28 --> 00:15:28 that they might
00:15:28 --> 00:15:29 not have any
00:15:29 --> 00:15:30 hope for their
00:15:30 --> 00:15:31 future,
00:15:32 --> 00:15:33 God miraculously
00:15:33 --> 00:15:35 showed up.
00:15:36 --> 00:15:37 He showed
00:15:37 --> 00:15:38 Isaiah
00:15:38 --> 00:15:39 someone
00:15:39 --> 00:15:41 that would
00:15:41 --> 00:15:41 help him
00:15:41 --> 00:15:41 survive
00:15:41 --> 00:15:42 and even
00:15:42 --> 00:15:43 thrive.
00:15:44 --> 00:15:45 And our time
00:15:45 --> 00:15:46 is not Isaiah's,
00:15:46 --> 00:15:46 but
00:15:46 --> 00:15:48 after COVID,
00:15:48 --> 00:15:50 we too
00:15:50 --> 00:15:50 desperately
00:15:50 --> 00:15:51 need to see
00:15:51 --> 00:15:52 what Isaiah
00:15:52 --> 00:15:53 saw.
00:15:54 --> 00:15:55 So what did
00:15:55 --> 00:15:56 Isaiah see?
00:15:58 --> 00:15:59 Isaiah says
00:15:59 --> 00:16:01 in verse 1,
00:16:02 --> 00:16:03 I saw
00:16:03 --> 00:16:03 the Lord.
00:16:06 --> 00:16:07 Now the word
00:16:07 --> 00:16:07 here is not
00:16:07 --> 00:16:08 the common
00:16:08 --> 00:16:09 Old Testament
00:16:09 --> 00:16:11 Lord
00:16:11 --> 00:16:12 in capital
00:16:12 --> 00:16:12 letters,
00:16:13 --> 00:16:14 which is
00:16:14 --> 00:16:14 in Hebrew
00:16:14 --> 00:16:16 that's Yahweh,
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 Israel's
00:16:17 --> 00:16:18 special
00:16:18 --> 00:16:19 name
00:16:19 --> 00:16:20 for God.
00:16:20 --> 00:16:21 Rather,
00:16:21 --> 00:16:22 Israel is
00:16:22 --> 00:16:23 literally saying,
00:16:24 --> 00:16:25 in the year
00:16:25 --> 00:16:25 King Uzziah
00:16:25 --> 00:16:26 died,
00:16:27 --> 00:16:28 I saw
00:16:28 --> 00:16:29 the King,
00:16:30 --> 00:16:32 the Lord.
00:16:34 --> 00:16:35 The scene
00:16:35 --> 00:16:35 is like
00:16:35 --> 00:16:38 heaven
00:16:38 --> 00:16:39 smashed
00:16:39 --> 00:16:39 down into
00:16:39 --> 00:16:40 the temple
00:16:40 --> 00:16:43 as Isaiah
00:16:43 --> 00:16:44 walked in
00:16:44 --> 00:16:45 one day.
00:16:46 --> 00:16:46 We have a
00:16:46 --> 00:16:47 couple of
00:16:47 --> 00:16:47 visitors who
00:16:47 --> 00:16:47 I've met
00:16:47 --> 00:16:48 this morning.
00:16:48 --> 00:16:49 Imagine you
00:16:49 --> 00:16:50 show up to
00:16:50 --> 00:16:50 church,
00:16:50 --> 00:16:51 you take a
00:16:51 --> 00:16:52 step inside
00:16:52 --> 00:16:53 and you
00:16:53 --> 00:16:54 see
00:16:54 --> 00:16:55 this.
00:17:00 --> 00:17:00 Isaiah
00:17:00 --> 00:17:01 sees the
00:17:01 --> 00:17:01 Lord,
00:17:02 --> 00:17:02 the King,
00:17:03 --> 00:17:04 on a throne,
00:17:04 --> 00:17:05 on a high
00:17:05 --> 00:17:05 platform,
00:17:07 --> 00:17:07 and His
00:17:07 --> 00:17:08 robe
00:17:08 --> 00:17:09 filled
00:17:09 --> 00:17:10 the entire
00:17:10 --> 00:17:11 floor.
00:17:12 --> 00:17:13 The temple
00:17:13 --> 00:17:13 was about
00:17:13 --> 00:17:14 the size
00:17:14 --> 00:17:14 of
00:17:14 --> 00:17:15 the
00:17:15 --> 00:17:17 floor
00:17:17 --> 00:17:18 space,
00:17:18 --> 00:17:19 the outer
00:17:19 --> 00:17:20 grassy knoll
00:17:20 --> 00:17:21 area of
00:17:21 --> 00:17:21 Chatswood
00:17:21 --> 00:17:22 Concourse.
00:17:23 --> 00:17:23 Or maybe
00:17:23 --> 00:17:24 picture a
00:17:24 --> 00:17:25 football field,
00:17:25 --> 00:17:26 a soccer
00:17:26 --> 00:17:26 field,
00:17:27 --> 00:17:28 football,
00:17:28 --> 00:17:28 soccer.
00:17:29 --> 00:17:30 But a
00:17:30 --> 00:17:30 soccer field,
00:17:32 --> 00:17:33 that's
00:17:33 --> 00:17:35 the size
00:17:35 --> 00:17:36 of the
00:17:36 --> 00:17:36 space
00:17:36 --> 00:17:37 and God's
00:17:37 --> 00:17:38 majestic
00:17:38 --> 00:17:39 robe,
00:17:39 --> 00:17:41 symbol of
00:17:41 --> 00:17:41 His
00:17:41 --> 00:17:43 power and
00:17:43 --> 00:17:44 impressiveness,
00:17:44 --> 00:17:45 fills that
00:17:45 --> 00:17:45 old space.
00:17:46 --> 00:17:47 Not only is it
