00:00:13 --> 00:00:20 And I'm probably following something along that, but who knows, after 17 hours on a flight, we'll see how we go.
00:00:22 --> 00:00:27 Our world has changed quite a lot in the past 75 to 80 years.
00:00:28 --> 00:00:37 For instance, our consumer mentality since the end of World War II has had a positive impact
00:00:37 --> 00:00:44 in that it's helped us kick industry along really well in such a way that the standard of living has risen not just in the West,
00:00:45 --> 00:00:46 but in fact in the world generally.
00:00:48 --> 00:00:54 But the same mentality has also had quite a detrimental impact on society.
00:00:54 --> 00:01:01 Classic example of this is the shift that's happened in advertising and in, for instance,
00:01:01 --> 00:01:07 as one example, military recruitment advertising since World War II today.
00:01:07 --> 00:01:11 And it gives you a picture of the way society has moved.
00:01:11 --> 00:01:17 During World War II, you may have been familiar with this if you were there, which you probably weren't.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:21 But during World War II, there was advertising like,
00:01:21 --> 00:01:25 Uncle Sam wants you in the US.
00:01:25 --> 00:01:26 You've got this sort of stuff.
00:01:26 --> 00:01:27 I want you.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:31 Another one was the call to duty,
00:01:32 --> 00:01:35 to join the army for home and country.
00:01:35 --> 00:01:36 It's my duty.
00:01:36 --> 00:01:37 I'm doing it.
00:01:37 --> 00:01:38 Are you doing it?
00:01:39 --> 00:01:42 So it's a guilt people into fulfillment of a duty.
00:01:42 --> 00:01:49 So you sign up and you fulfill your duty to country, to the nation for the good of humanity,
00:01:49 --> 00:01:51 unless, of course, you are a woman.
00:01:53 --> 00:01:55 And then in that case, the advertising was,
00:01:55 --> 00:01:58 I wish I was a man so that I could fulfill my duty.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:01 I'm making no comment on that whatsoever.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:06 Similar advertising operated throughout the United States,
00:02:06 --> 00:02:10 like the UK, Australia, New Zealand, other places like that.
00:02:10 --> 00:02:14 Now, military advertising is this.
00:02:15 --> 00:02:16 Be number one.
00:02:17 --> 00:02:18 It's about you.
00:02:18 --> 00:02:19 It's focused on you.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:25 Or you be all you can be and come and join the armed forces.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:27 We need you.
00:02:27 --> 00:02:32 And in its worst case, there's this running in the United Kingdom at the moment.
00:02:33 --> 00:02:35 You, me, me, me, millennials out there,
00:02:35 --> 00:02:39 the military needs you for your self-belief.
00:02:39 --> 00:02:45 We're desperate for you, you-centered people to come and be part of us.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:48 We are lost without you.
00:02:48 --> 00:02:49 Be all you can be.
00:02:49 --> 00:02:50 And it's no longer about duty.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:52 It's no longer about anyone else.
00:02:52 --> 00:02:54 It's no longer about society, about your country.
00:02:55 --> 00:02:56 It's about you.
00:02:58 --> 00:03:00 Advertisement is you focus.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:03 It's a massive shift.
00:03:03 --> 00:03:07 I suppose it should not come as a surprise,
00:03:08 --> 00:03:15 since it's a direct result of the expressive individualism of modern Western culture,
00:03:16 --> 00:03:22 which has replaced the community-first loyalties of previous generations,
00:03:22 --> 00:03:23 former generations.
00:03:23 --> 00:03:28 Individuals have been taught to be consumers,
00:03:29 --> 00:03:32 not only of retailers and merchants,
00:03:33 --> 00:03:36 but also of institutions and organizations.
00:03:37 --> 00:03:45 Individuals have been shaped by the culture to think of their own happiness and prosperity first,
00:03:45 --> 00:03:55 and to avoid letting commitments to any group or institution become a barrier to finding personal fulfillment.
00:03:56 --> 00:04:07 The concept of service and sacrifice are viewed as psychologically unhealthy in the West.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:10 One of the things that church planters did,
00:04:10 --> 00:04:14 this is back in the 1990s, around the 2000s,
00:04:14 --> 00:04:18 when the church growth movement was on its peak.
00:04:19 --> 00:04:22 One of the things they did as a result of the church growth movement
00:04:22 --> 00:04:27 was conduct neighborhood surveys in advance of going in and planting a church into a neighborhood
00:04:27 --> 00:04:33 to see what the values of that neighborhood were
00:04:33 --> 00:04:39 and how the new church could come in and connect with those values.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:46 They would start, get out there, meet the neighborhood,
00:04:46 --> 00:04:52 and the assumption was that if we could start a church to meet the values of our neighborhood,
00:04:52 --> 00:04:54 then people would just flock into that.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:58 One neighborhood, having done one of these surveys,
00:04:59 --> 00:05:00 one pastor went and did these surveys,
00:05:01 --> 00:05:04 and one neighborhood said that the church that they were looking for,
00:05:05 --> 00:05:09 bottom line, would never ask them to do anything.
00:05:11 --> 00:05:12 That's the church they're looking for.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:15 Never make demands on me.
00:05:15 --> 00:05:17 Never call me to a commitment.
00:05:18 --> 00:05:22 We don't want to minister to anyone we expect to be ministered to.
00:05:24 --> 00:05:27 Well, there's a great foundation to start a church.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:33 Our modern society, as well as many, I think some churches,
00:05:34 --> 00:05:38 potentially many churches, many members of churches,
00:05:38 --> 00:05:44 are on a collision course with the one who redefined greatness for us.
00:05:44 --> 00:05:53 I come not to be served, but to serve and give my life as a ransom for many.
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 That's the foundation of our existence.
00:05:56 --> 00:06:03 Now, if you've just joined us, we're in our annual vision series.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:07 We are in Ephesians because this letter is about the church,
00:06:07 --> 00:06:10 it's about who we are as a people.
00:06:10 --> 00:06:11 We are God's new society.
00:06:12 --> 00:06:15 We are God's family, a new creation, a new humanity,
00:06:16 --> 00:06:19 characterized not by walls of hostility and division,
00:06:19 --> 00:06:21 but by unity and peace.
00:06:21 --> 00:06:24 And we saw in the first couple of chapters of Ephesians
00:06:24 --> 00:06:27 that we have, as a new humanity,
00:06:27 --> 00:06:30 these wonderful blessings in the Lord Jesus Christ.
00:06:31 --> 00:06:35 It's because of the good news of what Jesus has achieved for us.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 It's the gospel.
00:06:36 --> 00:06:38 It's on the back of your service sheet.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:42 And the gospel, this good news,
00:06:42 --> 00:06:46 is the foundation of what we believe at St. Paul's,
00:06:46 --> 00:06:47 and it is life-changing.
00:06:47 --> 00:06:50 Let me just put it to you in case you haven't got time to read it.
00:06:50 --> 00:06:55 The gospel is the good news that God sent his son,
00:06:55 --> 00:06:58 the Lord Jesus Christ, in the world to live a perfect life,
00:06:59 --> 00:07:01 to die as a substitute for sinners,
00:07:01 --> 00:07:03 to absorb the anger of God,
00:07:03 --> 00:07:05 to take away our guilt and our shame,
00:07:05 --> 00:07:08 provide the gift of right standing before God,
00:07:08 --> 00:07:11 and to give eternal life and joy
00:07:11 --> 00:07:14 through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ alone,
00:07:14 --> 00:07:18 apart from any works of obedience on our behalf.
00:07:18 --> 00:07:21 And that statement,
00:07:21 --> 00:07:23 from that statement,
00:07:23 --> 00:07:25 from the grasping of that gospel,
00:07:26 --> 00:07:31 multitudes of blessings flow to those who embraced it in Jesus.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 As we saw last week,
00:07:33 --> 00:07:35 one of those is,
00:07:36 --> 00:07:40 God transforms our character in such a way
00:07:40 --> 00:07:43 that he becomes our new identity
00:07:43 --> 00:07:46 and he fills us up from the inside
00:07:46 --> 00:07:49 and grows us in humility at the very least.
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 So we're back in Ephesians 4 today.
00:07:52 --> 00:07:54 We're going to spend three weeks here.
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 And to see that the gospel,
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 through the gospel,
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 because of the gospel,
00:08:00 --> 00:08:03 God also doesn't just fill us up
00:08:03 --> 00:08:05 and give us a new identity and a character,
00:08:05 --> 00:08:07 but also gives us gifts,
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 his gifts,
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 to serve.
00:08:11 --> 00:08:14 We saw it in chapter 2, verse 10.
00:08:15 --> 00:08:18 As a consequence of God's work of salvation,
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 it says,
00:08:19 --> 00:08:20 we are God's handiwork,
00:08:20 --> 00:08:21 created in Christ Jesus,
00:08:22 --> 00:08:23 to do good works,
00:08:23 --> 00:08:25 which God prepared in advance for us to do.
00:08:26 --> 00:08:29 Now, I've been emphasizing our unity in Jesus
00:08:29 --> 00:08:30 over the past couple of weeks.
00:08:30 --> 00:08:33 Now, let's have a look at our diversity.
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 We are not clones.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:40 Yes, there is one faith, one baptism,
00:08:40 --> 00:08:44 but our unity does not mean uniformity.
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 In verse 7, Paul writes,
00:08:47 --> 00:08:49 to each of us,
00:08:50 --> 00:08:54 grace has been given as Christ apportioned it.
00:08:56 --> 00:09:00 And grace here means the ability to perform
00:09:00 --> 00:09:03 the task that God has given us to do.
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 In chapter 3, verses 7 and 8,
00:09:07 --> 00:09:09 Paul says that his apostleship
00:09:09 --> 00:09:13 came with the gift of God's grace.
00:09:14 --> 00:09:16 The point for us is this.
00:09:17 --> 00:09:21 Each of us who are in Jesus
00:09:21 --> 00:09:25 has received this enabling grace
00:09:25 --> 00:09:31 in the exact proportion that Christ gave it.
00:09:32 --> 00:09:34 And the message of this verse
00:09:34 --> 00:09:37 is that that's all of us who are in Jesus.
00:09:38 --> 00:09:40 No exceptions at all.
00:09:40 --> 00:09:45 All of us have a serving grace
00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 which has been given to us
00:09:47 --> 00:09:50 by Christ in perfect measure.
00:09:51 --> 00:09:55 That is, we all have a special part to perform.
00:09:58 --> 00:10:00 Some have put the diversity of gifts
00:10:00 --> 00:10:02 that have been given
00:10:02 --> 00:10:05 to God's people from Jesus
00:10:05 --> 00:10:07 into three broad categories.
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 Prophetic gifts,
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 priestly gifts,
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 and kingly gifts.
00:10:13 --> 00:10:15 Prophetic gifts are abilities
00:10:15 --> 00:10:17 based on understanding
00:10:17 --> 00:10:20 and articulating biblical truth.
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 They are the gifts
00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 that represent God to others.
00:10:24 --> 00:10:27 The gifts that represent God to others.
00:10:27 --> 00:10:29 And are marked by boldness and clarity.
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 Things like evangelism,
00:10:30 --> 00:10:32 teaching, speaking, discernment, prophecy.
00:10:32 --> 00:10:35 Priestly gifts
00:10:35 --> 00:10:39 are abilities based on understanding
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 a supply
00:10:40 --> 00:10:42 and to supply basic needs.
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 To understand and supply basic needs.
00:10:45 --> 00:10:48 They represent God to the world.
00:10:49 --> 00:10:51 And are marked by things like
00:10:51 --> 00:10:53 sympathy and sacrifice and care,
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 encouragement,
00:10:54 --> 00:10:56 helping, pastoring, mercy,
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 those kinds of things.
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 Kingly gifts
00:10:59 --> 00:11:01 are abilities based on
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 understanding direction
00:11:02 --> 00:11:05 and whole group needs.
00:11:05 --> 00:11:08 They represent Christ's vision,
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 his vision,
00:11:11 --> 00:11:13 to others.
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 And are marked by wisdom,
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 practicality,
00:11:16 --> 00:11:16 leadership,
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 things like apostles,
00:11:20 --> 00:11:23 founders of ministries,
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 leadership,
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 administration,
00:11:25 --> 00:11:25 wisdom,
00:11:26 --> 00:11:26 faith,
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 courage.
00:11:27 --> 00:11:29 when you put it all together,
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 and I think one of the
00:11:30 --> 00:11:32 clues here
00:11:32 --> 00:11:34 is that it is
00:11:34 --> 00:11:36 very rare,
00:11:37 --> 00:11:39 extremely rare
00:11:39 --> 00:11:41 for anyone
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 to have all three
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 of those categories
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 in equal measure.
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 Extremely rare.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:52 when you put it all together,
00:11:52 --> 00:11:54 each person's
00:11:54 --> 00:11:54 person's gifting
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 is as unique
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 as a thumbprint.
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 The implication
00:12:00 --> 00:12:02 is that there is a ministry
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 that only you
00:12:03 --> 00:12:04 can do.
00:12:07 --> 00:12:07 Spiritual gifts
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 fit you
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 for the mission
00:12:09 --> 00:12:09 in life
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 that God
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 has given you.
00:12:11 --> 00:12:16 Paul goes on
00:12:16 --> 00:12:16 to say
00:12:16 --> 00:12:16 in verses
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 8 and 10
00:12:17 --> 00:12:19 that not only
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 do we have
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 a special grace,
00:12:23 --> 00:12:23 but our
00:12:23 --> 00:12:25 individual graces
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 have
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 a spectacular
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 origin.
00:12:29 --> 00:12:29 Have a look at it.
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 Verse 8.
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 This is why it says
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 when he ascended
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 on high,
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 he led captives
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 in his train
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 and gave gifts
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 to men.
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 What does
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 he ascended
00:12:41 --> 00:12:41 mean?
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 Except that
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 he also
00:12:44 --> 00:12:45 descended
00:12:45 --> 00:12:45 to the lower
00:12:45 --> 00:12:46 earthly regions.
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 He who
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 descended
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 is the very one
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 who ascended
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 higher than
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 all the heavens
00:12:53 --> 00:12:54 in order to
00:12:54 --> 00:12:55 fill the whole
00:12:55 --> 00:12:55 universe.
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 Now what Paul
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 is doing there,
00:12:58 --> 00:12:58 he's borrowing
00:12:58 --> 00:13:00 a line
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 from

00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 takes that
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 image
00:13:45 --> 00:13:48 and
00:13:48 --> 00:13:50 he shifts
00:13:50 --> 00:13:50 it.
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 He changes
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 it from
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 the conquering
00:13:54 --> 00:13:54 king to
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 Jerusalem
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 receiving
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 gifts from
00:13:57 --> 00:13:58 humanity
00:13:58 --> 00:13:59 for being
00:13:59 --> 00:13:59 the conquering
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 king
00:14:00 --> 00:14:00 to now
00:14:00 --> 00:14:01 the conquering
00:14:01 --> 00:14:01 king
00:14:01 --> 00:14:03 throwing out,
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 casting out
00:14:04 --> 00:14:05 gifts to
00:14:05 --> 00:14:05 humanity.
00:14:07 --> 00:14:09 The triumphant
00:14:09 --> 00:14:09 Christ
00:14:09 --> 00:14:11 gave
00:14:11 --> 00:14:11 gifts
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 to people.
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 He's simply
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 borrowing the
00:14:16 --> 00:14:16 image of
00:14:16 --> 00:14:17 Psalm 68
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 and applying it
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 to Christ
00:14:19 --> 00:14:19 coming into
00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 this world
00:14:20 --> 00:14:20 and his
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 return to
00:14:21 --> 00:14:21 heaven.
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 The fact
00:14:23 --> 00:14:23 that he
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 ascended
00:14:24 --> 00:14:25 is another
00:14:25 --> 00:14:26 way of
00:14:26 --> 00:14:27 indicating
00:14:27 --> 00:14:28 the humiliation,
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 his humility
00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 of coming
00:14:30 --> 00:14:31 into
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 this world.
00:14:34 --> 00:14:34 His
00:14:34 --> 00:14:35 descent
00:14:35 --> 00:14:35 to earth
00:14:35 --> 00:14:36 meant that
00:14:36 --> 00:14:37 he set
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 aside
00:14:38 --> 00:14:38 the
00:14:38 --> 00:14:39 independent
00:14:39 --> 00:14:41 exercises
00:14:41 --> 00:14:42 or the
00:14:42 --> 00:14:42 independent
00:14:42 --> 00:14:44 exercise
00:14:44 --> 00:14:45 of his
00:14:45 --> 00:14:46 eternal
00:14:46 --> 00:14:47 divine
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 attributes.
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 Submitting
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 the exercise

00:15:16 --> 00:15:17 on the cross
00:15:17 --> 00:15:18 and actually
00:15:18 --> 00:15:19 becoming sin
00:15:19 --> 00:15:19 for us.
00:15:20 --> 00:15:20 But then
00:15:20 --> 00:15:21 he burst
00:15:21 --> 00:15:23 up in
00:15:23 --> 00:15:24 exultation
00:15:24 --> 00:15:24 so that now
00:15:24 --> 00:15:25 he fills
00:15:25 --> 00:15:26 the whole
00:15:26 --> 00:15:26 universe
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 as the
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 conquering
00:15:28 --> 00:15:29 king
00:15:29 --> 00:15:30 and joyously
00:15:30 --> 00:15:31 lavishes
00:15:31 --> 00:15:31 gifts upon
00:15:31 --> 00:15:32 his children.
00:15:35 --> 00:15:36 And what
00:15:36 --> 00:15:36 are the
00:15:36 --> 00:15:37 gifts
00:15:37 --> 00:15:38 he gives
00:15:38 --> 00:15:38 his
00:15:38 --> 00:15:38 children?
00:15:41 --> 00:15:42 His
00:15:42 --> 00:15:42 gifts
00:15:42 --> 00:15:45 as
00:15:45 --> 00:15:45 prophet,
00:15:46 --> 00:15:46 priest
00:15:46 --> 00:15:47 and king.
00:15:49 --> 00:15:50 He gives
00:15:50 --> 00:15:51 abundant
00:15:51 --> 00:15:51 gifts
00:15:51 --> 00:15:52 to his
00:15:52 --> 00:15:52 church

00:19:38 --> 00:19:39 an equipping
00:19:39 --> 00:19:40 ministry and
00:19:40 --> 00:19:41 members have
00:19:41 --> 00:19:42 primarily a
00:19:42 --> 00:19:43 doing ministry
00:19:43 --> 00:19:44 but we all
00:19:44 --> 00:19:45 are called to
00:19:45 --> 00:19:46 minister together
00:19:46 --> 00:19:48 as Christ
00:19:48 --> 00:19:48 has apportioned
00:19:48 --> 00:19:50 it to build
00:19:50 --> 00:19:51 his church.

00:20:04 --> 00:20:05 ferry you
00:20:05 --> 00:20:06 get on the
00:20:06 --> 00:20:08 ferry and
00:20:08 --> 00:20:09 you have a
00:20:09 --> 00:20:10 few staff who
00:20:10 --> 00:20:11 get you from
00:20:11 --> 00:20:12 point A to
00:20:12 --> 00:20:14 point B or
00:20:14 --> 00:20:14 it's like the
00:20:14 --> 00:20:15 airplane that a
00:20:15 --> 00:20:16 few of us just
00:20:16 --> 00:20:17 flew back on
00:20:17 --> 00:20:17 yesterday.
00:20:18 --> 00:20:19 The vast
00:20:19 --> 00:20:19 majority of
00:20:19 --> 00:20:20 people sitting
00:20:20 --> 00:20:20 on that
00:20:20 --> 00:20:21 airplane are
00:20:21 --> 00:20:22 passengers.
00:20:22 --> 00:20:23 We're getting
00:20:23 --> 00:20:24 fed and
00:20:24 --> 00:20:25 watered and
00:20:25 --> 00:20:26 everything else
00:20:26 --> 00:20:27 and there's a
00:20:27 --> 00:20:28 few people up
00:20:28 --> 00:20:29 the front doing
00:20:29 --> 00:20:30 the driving of
00:20:30 --> 00:20:30 the thing,
00:20:31 --> 00:20:31 flying of it,
00:20:32 --> 00:20:32 whatever you want
00:20:32 --> 00:20:32 to call it,
00:20:33 --> 00:20:34 and a few other
00:20:34 --> 00:20:35 people helping
00:20:35 --> 00:20:36 out, get on,
00:20:36 --> 00:20:38 people serving
00:20:38 --> 00:20:39 snacks and
00:20:39 --> 00:20:39 cleaning stuff
00:20:39 --> 00:20:40 up.
00:20:40 --> 00:20:41 But the vast
00:20:41 --> 00:20:41 majority are
00:20:41 --> 00:20:42 consumers of

00:20:47 --> 00:20:48 seats, awaiting
00:20:48 --> 00:20:49 to arrive the
00:20:49 --> 00:20:51 destination and
00:20:51 --> 00:20:51 taking some
00:20:51 --> 00:20:52 photos along the
00:20:52 --> 00:20:52 way.
00:20:52 --> 00:20:55 The local
00:20:55 --> 00:20:56 church is
00:20:56 --> 00:20:58 much more
00:20:58 --> 00:20:59 like a
00:20:59 --> 00:21:00 sailing boat
00:21:00 --> 00:21:01 in the
00:21:01 --> 00:21:01 Sydney to
00:21:01 --> 00:21:02 Hobart yacht
00:21:02 --> 00:21:03 race.
00:21:03 --> 00:21:05 Everyone on
00:21:05 --> 00:21:05 board has a
00:21:05 --> 00:21:06 crucial role
00:21:06 --> 00:21:08 to play and
00:21:08 --> 00:21:09 frankly there are
00:21:09 --> 00:21:10 no passengers
00:21:10 --> 00:21:12 on those
00:21:12 --> 00:21:13 yachts heading
00:21:13 --> 00:21:14 to Hobart once
00:21:14 --> 00:21:14 a year.
00:21:15 --> 00:21:16 No passengers
00:21:16 --> 00:21:17 catching a lift
00:21:17 --> 00:21:18 to Hobart to
00:21:18 --> 00:21:18 visit some
00:21:18 --> 00:21:19 family.
00:21:20 --> 00:21:21 You're a dead

00:21:22 --> 00:21:22 you are.

00:21:35 --> 00:21:37 called to be a
00:21:37 --> 00:21:37 corporate
00:21:37 --> 00:21:38 priesthood,
00:21:39 --> 00:21:40 either an
00:21:40 --> 00:21:41 equipping ministry
00:21:41 --> 00:21:42 or a doing
00:21:42 --> 00:21:42 ministry.
00:21:44 --> 00:21:44 Throughout
00:21:44 --> 00:21:45 history the
00:21:45 --> 00:21:45 church has been
00:21:45 --> 00:21:47 built on a
00:21:47 --> 00:21:48 foundation of
00:21:48 --> 00:21:48 diversity.
00:21:48 --> 00:21:53 It was
00:21:53 --> 00:21:54 interesting to
00:21:54 --> 00:21:54 hear one
00:21:54 --> 00:21:55 person at
00:21:55 --> 00:21:55 the conference
00:21:55 --> 00:21:57 say their
00:21:57 --> 00:21:58 biggest loss
00:21:58 --> 00:22:00 in their
00:22:00 --> 00:22:00 church,
00:22:01 --> 00:22:02 the biggest
00:22:02 --> 00:22:03 loss in their
00:22:03 --> 00:22:04 church when
00:22:04 --> 00:22:05 they moved from
00:22:05 --> 00:22:05 being a
00:22:05 --> 00:22:06 monocultural
00:22:06 --> 00:22:06 church to a
00:22:06 --> 00:22:07 multi-ethnic
00:22:07 --> 00:22:08 church,
00:22:09 --> 00:22:10 they said was
00:22:10 --> 00:22:11 from the
00:22:11 --> 00:22:12 majority culture
00:22:12 --> 00:22:13 that had been
00:22:13 --> 00:22:14 used to being
00:22:14 --> 00:22:16 served and a
00:22:16 --> 00:22:16 multi-ethnic
00:22:16 --> 00:22:17 church now meant
00:22:17 --> 00:22:18 we needed to
00:22:18 --> 00:22:19 serve one
00:22:19 --> 00:22:19 another.
00:22:21 --> 00:22:22 And so they
00:22:22 --> 00:22:24 just upped and
00:22:24 --> 00:22:25 moved to a
00:22:25 --> 00:22:25 church where
00:22:25 --> 00:22:26 they would get
00:22:26 --> 00:22:27 the services
00:22:27 --> 00:22:28 they heard,
00:22:28 --> 00:22:28 the music they
00:22:28 --> 00:22:31 wanted, the
00:22:31 --> 00:22:31 liturgy they
00:22:31 --> 00:22:31 wanted.
00:22:33 --> 00:22:34 They just upped
00:22:34 --> 00:22:34 and moved.
00:22:37 --> 00:22:38 The foundation
00:22:38 --> 00:22:40 for them was
00:22:40 --> 00:22:41 I am here to
00:22:41 --> 00:22:41 be served.
00:22:45 --> 00:22:46 God works
00:22:46 --> 00:22:47 with diversity
00:22:47 --> 00:22:47 and quite
00:22:47 --> 00:22:49 ironically he
00:22:49 --> 00:22:50 uses that to

00:22:50 --> 00:22:51 unity.

00:24:47 --> 00:24:48 each other.

00:24:50 --> 00:24:51 we are all
00:24:51 --> 00:24:51 involved in
00:24:51 --> 00:24:52 the ministry
00:24:52 --> 00:24:52 to prepare
00:24:52 --> 00:24:53 God's people
00:24:53 --> 00:24:54 for works
00:24:54 --> 00:24:55 of service.
00:24:55 --> 00:24:56 When you
00:24:56 --> 00:24:56 use your
00:24:56 --> 00:24:58 gifts that
00:24:58 --> 00:24:58 God has

00:27:02 --> 00:27:03 coming up to
00:27:03 --> 00:27:03 standard.

00:27:05 --> 00:27:06 consistent thing.

00:27:07 --> 00:27:07 walk out the
00:27:07 --> 00:27:08 door and go,

00:27:09 --> 00:27:09 conveyor belt to

00:27:10 --> 00:27:11 not here to serve,
00:27:11 --> 00:27:11 not here to connect,

00:29:31 --> 00:29:31 church, we
00:29:31 --> 00:29:32 normally think of
00:29:32 --> 00:29:34 formal ministry
00:29:34 --> 00:29:34 sense, a
00:29:34 --> 00:29:35 position on a
00:29:35 --> 00:29:36 team or a
00:29:36 --> 00:29:38 specific role on
00:29:38 --> 00:29:38 a roster or
00:29:38 --> 00:29:39 something like
00:29:39 --> 00:29:39 that.
00:29:40 --> 00:29:41 That's a very
00:29:41 --> 00:29:44 small portion of
00:29:44 --> 00:29:45 the ministry that
00:29:45 --> 00:29:46 happens at St.
00:29:46 --> 00:29:46 Paul's.
00:29:47 --> 00:29:48 A small portion.
00:29:51 --> 00:29:53 And it's not the
00:29:53 --> 00:29:54 starting point for
00:29:54 --> 00:29:57 ministry, nor the
00:29:57 --> 00:29:57 end point of

00:30:00 --> 00:30:01 ministry is what
00:30:01 --> 00:30:03 happens outside of

00:30:18 --> 00:30:19 doesn't stop there

00:30:21 --> 00:30:22 join a ministry

00:31:17 --> 00:31:18 time and ministry
00:31:18 --> 00:31:19 to this church.
00:31:20 --> 00:31:21 In a previous
00:31:21 --> 00:31:22 church I belonged
00:31:22 --> 00:31:23 to, a teacher
00:31:23 --> 00:31:23 retired.
00:31:23 --> 00:31:24 In fact, he was
00:31:24 --> 00:31:24 my science
00:31:24 --> 00:31:25 teacher.
00:31:27 --> 00:31:27 Not that I
00:31:27 --> 00:31:28 tried to remind
00:31:28 --> 00:31:29 him of that.
00:31:29 --> 00:31:29 We didn't have a
00:31:29 --> 00:31:30 great relationship.

00:31:34 --> 00:31:35 normal retirement age

00:31:39 --> 00:31:40 himself ordained into

00:31:41 --> 00:31:42 serve his local church

00:31:43 --> 00:31:44 capacity, now that
00:31:44 --> 00:31:45 he'd retired.
00:31:45 --> 00:31:47 And he still
00:31:47 --> 00:31:49 ministers there in
00:31:49 --> 00:31:50 his early 80s,
00:31:50 --> 00:31:52 still ministers, I
00:31:52 --> 00:31:53 think, four days a
00:31:53 --> 00:31:54 week doing ministry
00:31:54 --> 00:31:57 in that church as
00:31:57 --> 00:31:58 part of the staff
00:31:58 --> 00:31:58 team.
00:32:00 --> 00:32:01 Secondly, talents.
00:32:02 --> 00:32:03 Bibles uses the
00:32:03 --> 00:32:03 language of gifts.
00:32:04 --> 00:32:05 I'm going to launch

00:32:07 --> 00:32:08 talked about it
00:32:08 --> 00:32:09 already today, so I'm

00:32:12 --> 00:32:13 final way you can

00:33:14 --> 00:33:16 language of supporting a
00:33:16 --> 00:33:19 missionary or supporting a
00:33:19 --> 00:33:20 church financially is
00:33:20 --> 00:33:22 described as ministry,
00:33:23 --> 00:33:25 described as a service.
00:33:25 --> 00:33:29 Some of us here have a
00:33:29 --> 00:33:32 special gift of giving.
00:33:32 --> 00:33:34 It's part of what God has
00:33:34 --> 00:33:35 given you in displaying,
00:33:36 --> 00:33:38 disseminating his gifts to
00:33:38 --> 00:33:38 us.
00:33:38 --> 00:33:39 Some of us here have a
00:33:39 --> 00:33:40 special gift of giving.
00:33:41 --> 00:33:43 And I would be encouraging
00:33:43 --> 00:33:45 you in two Sundays time to
00:33:45 --> 00:33:46 use that gift of giving.
00:33:49 --> 00:33:50 But regardless of that,
00:33:51 --> 00:33:53 every single Christian has
00:33:53 --> 00:33:54 been called into it.
00:33:54 --> 00:33:56 It might not be your gift,
00:33:56 --> 00:33:57 but it is your duty.

00:34:07 --> 00:34:08 God's people are involved

00:34:15 --> 00:34:16 conquering king and his
00:34:16 --> 00:34:16 mission.
00:34:20 --> 00:34:22 Now, like our gifting, it
00:34:22 --> 00:34:23 is something we do in
00:34:23 --> 00:34:24 differing degrees.
00:34:25 --> 00:34:26 We give according to what
00:34:26 --> 00:34:29 we have rather than what
00:34:29 --> 00:34:30 we have not.
00:34:31 --> 00:34:32 The principle that I like to
00:34:32 --> 00:34:35 use here is unequal giving
00:34:35 --> 00:34:36 but equal sacrifice.
00:34:38 --> 00:34:40 Our act of giving is an act
00:34:40 --> 00:34:41 of worship.
00:34:42 --> 00:34:43 This is why the Bible calls
00:34:43 --> 00:34:45 us to give from our first
00:34:45 --> 00:34:46 fruits and to live on the
00:34:46 --> 00:34:48 rest rather than giving God
00:34:48 --> 00:34:49 what is left over.
00:34:49 --> 00:34:52 If God has saved you in
00:34:52 --> 00:34:54 Jesus Christ and gathered
00:34:54 --> 00:34:55 you to himself, his
00:34:55 --> 00:34:57 purpose is to grow you to

00:34:59 --> 00:35:00 character and his work.
