00:00:17 --> 00:00:21 We'd offer people the opportunity to take responsibility for one job
00:00:21 --> 00:00:23 so you didn't have to do everything and you didn't have somebody
00:00:23 --> 00:00:25 leaning over your shoulder telling you how to do it.
00:00:25 --> 00:00:27 You could just do it, which was really good.
00:00:27 --> 00:00:31 And we'd have a barbecue or something together in the middle to celebrate,
00:00:31 --> 00:00:34 but just good fun, lots of good conversations,
00:00:35 --> 00:00:38 but really helpful to the overall what's going on around the place.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:43 So I think I know that you'd take a great weight off Dave Lawrence's mind
00:00:43 --> 00:00:45 if you're getting in touch with him and saying,
00:00:45 --> 00:00:49 I can do this job, I'll do this job and split the day up like that,

00:00:55 --> 00:00:58 and a passage which in many ways is a difficult passage for us,
00:00:59 --> 00:01:01 please speak to us by your spirit.
00:01:01 --> 00:01:04 Speak to our hearts and minds that you would be transforming us in Christ
00:01:04 --> 00:01:08 and growing us in his image to your glory.
00:01:09 --> 00:01:09 Amen.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:16 Darian Klintos took us into 1 Peter 2 last week
00:01:16 --> 00:01:18 and the first seven verses of chapter 3 were part of the passage
00:01:18 --> 00:01:21 that we were going to deal with and we plan to deal with
00:01:21 --> 00:01:25 and anybody in a small group will know it was part of the same study.
00:01:26 --> 00:01:29 And it's 1 Peter 2 is a passage which tells Christians
00:01:29 --> 00:01:34 how to live submissively under all sorts of governments and employers,
00:01:34 --> 00:01:36 both for good and for bad.
00:01:36 --> 00:01:38 Governments and employers that are good for you,
00:01:38 --> 00:01:42 governments and employers that maybe are quite difficult for you.
00:01:42 --> 00:01:46 And so we were urged to live lives of faithful submission
00:01:46 --> 00:01:49 grounded in the life which Jesus himself lived.
00:01:51 --> 00:01:52 Called to patient endurance
00:01:52 --> 00:01:57 and we are encouraged that it is actually commendable
00:01:57 --> 00:02:02 before God to bear up in the face of unjust suffering.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:05 Now, Darian did a really neat sidestep.
00:02:05 --> 00:02:08 He just stepped right away from the one, the third area of submission,
00:02:09 --> 00:02:11 family life, wives and husbands.
00:02:11 --> 00:02:14 He didn't enter into that, he just left that hanging.
00:02:14 --> 00:02:16 Although, to be fair to him, it was with permission.
00:02:18 --> 00:02:20 And he's gone away for the weekend with Vanessa.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:22 He and Vanessa were going to be here today
00:02:22 --> 00:02:27 but somebody in their family gave them a weekend away up at Terrigal
00:02:27 --> 00:02:29 and we think that's just a blessing for them
00:02:29 --> 00:02:31 and glad for them to be able to enjoy it.
00:02:32 --> 00:02:34 It begins, verse 1, chapter 3.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:37 Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands
00:02:37 --> 00:02:41 so that if any of them do not believe the word
00:02:41 --> 00:02:44 they may be won over without words by the behaviour of their wives
00:02:44 --> 00:02:49 when they see the purity and the reverence of your lives.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:53 We ventured into this passage in Bible study the other week
00:02:53 --> 00:02:56 and one of our lovely women said in really quite a lovely way,
00:02:56 --> 00:03:01 it's very hard to read this passage without it sounding like sit.
00:03:08 --> 00:03:11 So this is not about men and women generally.
00:03:12 --> 00:03:15 You might have a female boss at work.
00:03:15 --> 00:03:20 In fact, your wife might have a higher power job than you
00:03:20 --> 00:03:23 but this is when you come back into a family.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:26 If you've got a female boss at work,
00:03:26 --> 00:03:29 if you work for your wife at work and she's your boss at work,
00:03:29 --> 00:03:32 you will submit to her leadership in the workplace
00:03:32 --> 00:03:34 on the basis of what Peter says in chapter 2.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:39 But chapter 3 is a journey into family life
00:03:39 --> 00:03:43 and this is about submissive lives within the family,
00:03:44 --> 00:03:45 husbands and wives.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:48 Chapter 2 taught that God is a God of order.
00:03:49 --> 00:03:51 He brings peace out of chaos.
00:03:51 --> 00:03:54 He brings restoration to a broken world.
00:03:55 --> 00:03:57 He brings order to society through government.
00:03:57 --> 00:03:59 He brings order to the workplace
00:03:59 --> 00:04:00 and now in chapter 3,
00:04:01 --> 00:04:04 he teaches that God brings order to family life.
00:04:04 --> 00:04:07 He gives us a framework in which to conduct our relationships.
00:04:11 --> 00:04:14 Submission is a dirty word for many of us.
00:04:15 --> 00:04:21 It sounds even worse when it comes from the mouth of a man.
00:04:21 --> 00:04:29 And there are many unhappy overtones and all sorts of issues for us.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:34 But listen to what the Bible says.
00:04:34 --> 00:04:36 Wives,
00:04:36 --> 00:04:58 Wives, be submissive, yield, give way to your husbands.
00:04:58 --> 00:05:01 He has two types of husband and wife.
00:05:01 --> 00:05:05 A husband who isn't a believer and one who is.
00:05:06 --> 00:05:09 And his hope is that a wife with an unbelieving husband
00:05:09 --> 00:05:12 will win him to Christ by her behaviour.
00:05:12 --> 00:05:14 Not by her words,
00:05:14 --> 00:05:15 by her behaviour.
00:05:16 --> 00:05:20 It's a specific example of chapter 2, verse 12.
00:05:20 --> 00:05:23 Living such good lives among the nations
00:05:23 --> 00:05:25 that they may see your good deeds
00:05:25 --> 00:05:28 and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
00:05:28 --> 00:05:31 I've seen this happen.
00:05:32 --> 00:05:34 My best friend was won to Christ
00:05:34 --> 00:05:36 because his wife regarded this first.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:40 He has become a wonderful Christian leader in his family and church
00:05:40 --> 00:05:42 because of his wife's witness to him.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 It was a joy for her
00:05:45 --> 00:05:47 when her husband came to Christ and grew in him
00:05:47 --> 00:05:52 and she deliberately stepped back from spiritual leadership in her family
00:05:52 --> 00:05:55 as she encouraged her husband to take up the reins
00:05:55 --> 00:05:59 and to lead spiritually because of her...
00:05:59 --> 00:06:02 She did that because of her relationship with Christ.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:04 I've seen the opposite.
00:06:06 --> 00:06:08 I have seen women in churches
00:06:08 --> 00:06:10 disrespecting their husbands in such a way
00:06:10 --> 00:06:13 that they completely undermine their witness.
00:06:15 --> 00:06:15 They nag them.
00:06:15 --> 00:06:18 They complain about them.
00:06:19 --> 00:06:20 They belittle them.
00:06:21 --> 00:06:23 And then they wonder and wring their hands
00:06:23 --> 00:06:27 when their husbands won't go anywhere near the church.
00:06:30 --> 00:06:32 Wives, in the same way,
00:06:32 --> 00:06:34 be submissive to your husbands
00:06:34 --> 00:06:37 so that if any of them do not believe the word,
00:06:37 --> 00:06:39 they may be won over without words
00:06:39 --> 00:06:41 by the behaviour of their wives
00:06:41 --> 00:06:45 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.
00:06:46 --> 00:06:49 Now, I reckon by about now,
00:06:49 --> 00:06:53 there should be a growing underbelly of what if.
00:06:55 --> 00:06:58 You know, what about my friend who's in this situation
00:06:58 --> 00:07:00 and what about where I've been?
00:07:00 --> 00:07:03 And I just want to say before we go there,
00:07:03 --> 00:07:05 let's read the next bit, verse 3.
00:07:05 --> 00:07:08 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment,
00:07:08 --> 00:07:11 such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewellery and fine clothes.
00:07:12 --> 00:07:18 Instead, it should be that of your inner self,
00:07:18 --> 00:07:21 the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit,
00:07:21 --> 00:07:23 which is of great worth in God's sight.
00:07:23 --> 00:07:26 For this is the way the holy women of the past
00:07:26 --> 00:07:29 who put their hope in God used to make themselves beautiful.
00:07:30 --> 00:07:32 They were submissive to their own husbands,
00:07:32 --> 00:07:36 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master.
00:07:36 --> 00:07:40 I'm hoping that's not contentious,
00:07:40 --> 00:07:42 maybe the last bit, but the bulk of it,
00:07:42 --> 00:07:46 because it's all about inner beauty being much more important than outer show.
00:07:47 --> 00:07:49 And that's totally consistent with the Gospels,
00:07:49 --> 00:07:54 where God always says that what's on the inside matters more than externals.
00:07:54 --> 00:07:57 And to put it crudely, the world's always trying to make,
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 dress up mutton as lamb.
00:08:00 --> 00:08:05 You go to the top level of the chase and you buy the branded clothes.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 Maybe you don't.
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 Maybe you do.
00:08:09 --> 00:08:13 Or you shop a lower level, something like that, a level lower.
00:08:15 --> 00:08:18 Designer jeans, accessories, having the right look, having the right label.
00:08:19 --> 00:08:22 In some communities, it's all about having the right set of tattoos
00:08:22 --> 00:08:24 and the right set of piercings.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:26 In terms of how we present ourselves to one another.
00:08:27 --> 00:08:30 But Peter says it's what's on the inside that matters, not the outside.
00:08:32 --> 00:08:36 A friend of mine told me about his university ministry.
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 And this goes back 30 years.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:41 And he was discipling a young man and he was preparing him for leadership
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 within the university fellowship.
00:08:44 --> 00:08:46 And the young bloke wanted the old bloke's wisdom
00:08:46 --> 00:08:49 about a girl that he was thinking of asking out,
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 who looked pretty good.
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 She was the hot one.
00:08:54 --> 00:09:00 And the old bloke said that he thought another woman that they both knew
00:09:00 --> 00:09:03 would make a wonderful partner.
00:09:03 --> 00:09:09 And the young bloke said, but she looks pretty ugly.
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 Now, I know that woman.
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 I know the ugly one.
00:09:17 --> 00:09:18 Not my wife.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:21 We both know her.
00:09:21 --> 00:09:26 And I've got to tell you that she is full of inner beauty.
00:09:27 --> 00:09:31 And her inner beauty makes her outer beauty quite lovely as well.
00:09:33 --> 00:09:35 She radiates Christ.
00:09:35 --> 00:09:40 And in that conversation, the young bloke went down a lot of notches
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 in the eyes of his mentor.
00:09:43 --> 00:09:45 Because all he could see was outer beauty.
00:09:45 --> 00:09:49 He couldn't see the precious beauty and the shine and the witness of the woman
00:09:49 --> 00:09:51 that he called ugly.
00:09:51 --> 00:09:58 Peter says, inner beauty over outward adornment.
00:10:00 --> 00:10:03 And then he says, you are her daughters, speaking about Sarah,
00:10:03 --> 00:10:05 if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.
00:10:08 --> 00:10:10 And I think that little line gives away something.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:15 I think it gives away the fact that he understands that there is pain
00:10:15 --> 00:10:18 in what he is teaching here.
00:10:21 --> 00:10:25 Peter understands that a woman might have a whole lot of fears
00:10:25 --> 00:10:27 about submitting to her husband.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:33 And he says, do not give way to fear.
00:10:36 --> 00:10:39 And I'm confident when I talk to this congregation,
00:10:40 --> 00:10:43 just like when I spoke to 8.30 this morning and my wife was sitting there,
00:10:43 --> 00:10:49 that there are women here who know how painful it can be
00:10:49 --> 00:10:53 submitting to a man who thought that it was all about him.
00:10:56 --> 00:10:59 We've had to sort that out in our marriage sometimes.
00:10:59 --> 00:11:01 And I think we'll probably have to do it again.
00:11:02 --> 00:11:05 It's not a problem solved forever and ever.
00:11:07 --> 00:11:12 I sat with a Christian counsellor a while back
00:11:12 --> 00:11:14 and I talked to her about this passage.
00:11:14 --> 00:11:16 I actually said, do I've got to get up and preach this on Sunday?
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 What am I going to say?
00:11:19 --> 00:11:23 What are a wife's fears in submitting to her husband?
00:11:25 --> 00:11:28 And she said things like having wounded hearts,
00:11:30 --> 00:11:32 wives who've been injured mentally,
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 wives who've been abused emotionally,
00:11:37 --> 00:11:39 wives who have been mistreated sexually,
00:11:39 --> 00:11:44 wives who have lost a sense of self
00:11:44 --> 00:11:48 as their marriage becomes all about her husband, the husband.
00:11:50 --> 00:11:54 And she said there will be people sitting in your congregation
00:11:54 --> 00:11:57 who will be angered and distressed by the word submission
00:11:57 --> 00:11:59 because they have been hurt.
00:11:59 --> 00:12:06 And she said men and women wrongly interpret submission
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 as being...
00:12:07 --> 00:12:10 I was going hell for leather making notes while she was talking.
00:12:11 --> 00:12:13 But she said men and women...
00:12:17 --> 00:12:24 ..said men and women wrongly interpret submission
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 as being a doormat,
00:12:25 --> 00:12:28 doing whatever he asks.
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 And it's not about that.
00:12:29 --> 00:12:32 We need to be ourselves within our relationship.
00:12:32 --> 00:12:34 We need to be able to say when we're tired
00:12:34 --> 00:12:36 and when we're hurt and when we're lonely.
00:12:37 --> 00:12:39 We need to feel safe with our spouse
00:12:39 --> 00:12:42 to be able to reveal deep needs
00:12:42 --> 00:12:44 and feelings and longings.
00:12:45 --> 00:12:47 And if your spouse opens up
00:12:47 --> 00:12:50 and says things that reflect badly on you,
00:12:50 --> 00:12:53 are you able to hear them
00:12:53 --> 00:12:57 and still affirm your love for them?
00:12:58 --> 00:12:59 Or do you shut them down
00:12:59 --> 00:13:01 because you cannot bear to hear
00:13:01 --> 00:13:04 how you impact on them?
00:13:07 --> 00:13:10 And she said husbands and wives' hearts are sinful.
00:13:10 --> 00:13:13 There's often a struggle over roles and place in a marriage.
00:13:14 --> 00:13:16 She said if people would listen to God's word
00:13:16 --> 00:13:18 and understand that he is a God of order,
00:13:18 --> 00:13:22 marriage can be a delightfully safe place
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 where a husband and a wife
00:13:23 --> 00:13:25 can know wonderful security
00:13:25 --> 00:13:27 with one another and with God.
00:13:28 --> 00:13:30 A husband who leads and loves,
00:13:31 --> 00:13:33 who brings harmony and peace and safety
00:13:33 --> 00:13:36 as he submits to Christ
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 and serves his family.
00:13:37 --> 00:13:41 It's really interesting
00:13:41 --> 00:13:44 but Peter speaks a specific word to husbands.
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 He doesn't say anything to our governments.
00:13:46 --> 00:13:48 He doesn't say anything to employers.
00:13:48 --> 00:13:50 But he does speak to husbands.
00:13:51 --> 00:13:51 Verse 7,
00:13:51 --> 00:13:54 Husbands, in the same way be considerate
00:13:54 --> 00:13:56 as you live with your wives
00:13:56 --> 00:13:58 and treat them with respect
00:13:58 --> 00:13:59 as the weaker partner
00:13:59 --> 00:14:01 and as heirs with you
00:14:01 --> 00:14:03 of the gracious gift of life
00:14:03 --> 00:14:05 so that nothing will hinder your prayers.
00:14:05 --> 00:14:09 Husbands, it's not all about you.
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 Be considerate to your other.
00:14:13 --> 00:14:15 Treat them with respect.
00:14:16 --> 00:14:17 He states the obvious
00:14:17 --> 00:14:19 to call wives the weaker partner.
00:14:21 --> 00:14:24 It's men who overpower women in violent crime.
00:14:25 --> 00:14:28 Men and women do not compete equally in most sports
00:14:28 --> 00:14:30 because of physical difference.
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 Women have a body clock
00:14:32 --> 00:14:35 which is attuned to conceiving and bearing children.
00:14:36 --> 00:14:37 Be considerate.
00:14:38 --> 00:14:40 Recognise your wife for who she is.
00:14:41 --> 00:14:41 Love her.
00:14:42 --> 00:14:44 Find out and understand her needs
00:14:44 --> 00:14:45 and her desires
00:14:45 --> 00:14:47 and ask her what her fears are.
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 Regard her.
00:14:49 --> 00:14:50 Be considerate.
00:14:52 --> 00:14:53 And realise
00:14:53 --> 00:14:55 that in spiritual matters
00:14:55 --> 00:14:57 we are co-heirs
00:14:57 --> 00:14:59 of the gracious gift of life.
00:15:00 --> 00:15:02 We are full equals
00:15:02 --> 00:15:04 in terms of God's salvation
00:15:04 --> 00:15:06 and place in his kingdom.
00:15:09 --> 00:15:11 One of the big fears
00:15:11 --> 00:15:12 of this passage for a wife
00:15:12 --> 00:15:14 is what her husband might do
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 with this teaching.
00:15:15 --> 00:15:19 So you go home from the sermon this morning
00:15:19 --> 00:15:21 and you march into your house
00:15:21 --> 00:15:22 and you take control
00:15:22 --> 00:15:23 and you rule the roost
00:15:23 --> 00:15:25 and demand what you want
00:15:25 --> 00:15:26 and when you want it
00:15:26 --> 00:15:28 and there are too many stories
00:15:28 --> 00:15:30 of husbands reminding the wife
00:15:30 --> 00:15:32 of what she should be giving him.
00:15:34 --> 00:15:35 My stomach still churns
00:15:35 --> 00:15:37 about the man who said to me,
00:15:37 --> 00:15:38 a Christian man
00:15:38 --> 00:15:39 or the man at church
00:15:39 --> 00:15:40 who said to me
00:15:40 --> 00:15:41 he wasn't getting
00:15:41 --> 00:15:43 what he was entitled to
00:15:43 --> 00:15:44 in his marriage
00:15:44 --> 00:15:46 and he was a Christian man
00:15:46 --> 00:15:48 and he was talking about sex
00:15:48 --> 00:15:50 and he was aggrieved
00:15:50 --> 00:15:52 because he saw it as his right.
00:15:54 --> 00:15:57 You can't take something like that.
00:16:00 --> 00:16:01 It has to be given
00:16:01 --> 00:16:04 and it's not going to be given
00:16:04 --> 00:16:06 in the way that God intended
00:16:06 --> 00:16:08 if it is demanded.
00:16:13 --> 00:16:15 Marriage actually happens
00:16:15 --> 00:16:16 I don't know if you thought of this
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 but marriage happens
00:16:17 --> 00:16:20 when a wife chooses
00:16:20 --> 00:16:21 to yield to a man
00:16:21 --> 00:16:23 and to accept marriage.
00:16:26 --> 00:16:27 That's one of the reasons
00:16:27 --> 00:16:30 why it's very, very important
00:16:30 --> 00:16:31 that you be careful
00:16:31 --> 00:16:33 about who you say yes to
00:16:33 --> 00:16:35 and do not undersell yourself.
00:16:37 --> 00:16:39 See, I've got a little bet with myself.
00:16:39 --> 00:16:41 I bet 95% of the women
00:16:41 --> 00:16:42 in our church family
00:16:42 --> 00:16:44 who are married
00:16:44 --> 00:16:46 or who have been married
00:16:46 --> 00:16:49 you waited for a goose like me
00:16:49 --> 00:16:50 to summon up the courage
00:16:50 --> 00:16:51 and take the initiative
00:16:51 --> 00:16:52 to ask you.
00:16:53 --> 00:16:54 Is that true?
00:16:54 --> 00:16:56 Anybody ask their husband?
00:16:57 --> 00:16:58 I'm not going to slam you for doing it.
00:16:58 --> 00:16:59 There's nothing wrong with that
00:16:59 --> 00:17:00 but did you do it?
00:17:00 --> 00:17:01 Who took the initiative?
00:17:02 --> 00:17:03 And who responded
00:17:03 --> 00:17:04 to the initiator?
00:17:04 --> 00:17:09 You waited for a man to initiate
00:17:09 --> 00:17:12 you wanted him to lead
00:17:12 --> 00:17:14 if you are still married
00:17:14 --> 00:17:17 I'm sure you would love him to lead
00:17:17 --> 00:17:18 with deep consideration
00:17:18 --> 00:17:20 of who you are
00:17:20 --> 00:17:23 and that may not be so.
00:17:26 --> 00:17:28 And it may be that you live with deep pain
00:17:28 --> 00:17:29 because your husband is failing
00:17:29 --> 00:17:31 to be considerate to you.
00:17:31 --> 00:17:33 And it may also be
00:17:33 --> 00:17:34 that you are a man
00:17:34 --> 00:17:35 who is struggling to lead
00:17:35 --> 00:17:36 in a godly way in your family
00:17:36 --> 00:17:37 because you have a wife
00:17:37 --> 00:17:38 who doesn't think
00:17:38 --> 00:17:40 she should ever give way to you.
00:17:41 --> 00:17:43 My counselling friend said
00:17:43 --> 00:17:44 you have to remember
00:17:44 --> 00:17:46 that both men and women
00:17:46 --> 00:17:48 have sinful hearts
00:17:48 --> 00:17:50 when it comes to responding
00:17:50 --> 00:17:51 to the word of God
00:17:51 --> 00:17:52 and the will of God.
00:17:52 --> 00:17:54 It is a spiritual problem.
00:17:57 --> 00:17:58 Submission doesn't come easily
00:17:58 --> 00:17:59 to any of us
00:17:59 --> 00:18:00 but it can be
00:18:00 --> 00:18:02 an incredible witness
00:18:02 --> 00:18:02 to Christ
00:18:02 --> 00:18:05 and I think you see that
00:18:05 --> 00:18:06 throughout the rest
00:18:06 --> 00:18:07 of chapter 3.
00:18:09 --> 00:18:10 So verse 8
00:18:10 --> 00:18:13 Finally
00:18:13 --> 00:18:14 all of you
00:18:14 --> 00:18:15 live in harmony
00:18:15 --> 00:18:15 with one another.
00:18:16 --> 00:18:17 Be sympathetic
00:18:17 --> 00:18:19 love as brothers
00:18:19 --> 00:18:21 be compassionate
00:18:21 --> 00:18:22 and humble
00:18:22 --> 00:18:24 do not repay evil
00:18:24 --> 00:18:25 with evil
