00:00:13 --> 00:00:20 Historical study has revealed that Karl Marx, the self-proclaimed defender of the working class
00:00:20 --> 00:00:31 and the working class public, never truly knew or had any relationship with a single member
00:00:31 --> 00:00:32 of the working class public.
00:00:34 --> 00:00:43 So far as researchers know, he never set foot in a flour mill, in a factory, in a mine,
00:00:43 --> 00:00:47 or any industrial workplace in his entire life.
00:00:47 --> 00:00:55 He lived a carefree, bohemian lifestyle, an intellectual lifestyle.
00:00:56 --> 00:01:04 He knew poverty because of his lifestyle choices, but he always kept company with middle class
00:01:04 --> 00:01:05 intellectuals.
00:01:06 --> 00:01:14 When he created the Communist League, he made sure that working class socialists were eliminated
00:01:14 --> 00:01:18 from any positions of power and influence in the organisation.
00:01:20 --> 00:01:27 It is also clear for all his endeavours to be the social benefactor of humanity, he disliked
00:01:27 --> 00:01:28 people.
00:01:29 --> 00:01:35 And he continuously fought with members of his own family and circle of friends.
00:01:35 --> 00:01:45 Marx lived his life in an atmosphere of verbal violence, quarrelling with everyone with whom
00:01:45 --> 00:01:48 he associated with, with any length of time.
00:01:50 --> 00:01:55 He worked hard, in fact, most of his life to become middle class.
00:01:55 --> 00:02:02 He spent the last two decades of his life in a comfortable middle class homes.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:09 And for the last 10 years of his life, he never had anything less than two servants.
00:02:14 --> 00:02:15 Why do I mention that?
00:02:15 --> 00:02:26 It's because it is so hard for humans to live up to what we champion intellectually.
00:02:27 --> 00:02:33 It is so hard for us to live out what we hold to as being our belief system.
00:02:35 --> 00:02:42 You know, it's not uncommon to love the idea of loving people than actually loving people
00:02:42 --> 00:02:43 themselves.
00:02:43 --> 00:02:50 Now, from a biblical perspective, our love for people is even more revealing.
00:02:52 --> 00:03:00 Because it indicates the authenticity and the health of our relationship with God.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:04 The spiritual logic is clear.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:08 Love for God produces love for people.
00:03:08 --> 00:03:16 And when you turn that spiritual logic around on its head, you can discern a love for God
00:03:16 --> 00:03:20 by the existence of love for others.
00:03:22 --> 00:03:23 That's the correlation.
00:03:25 --> 00:03:28 And it's there in the Old Testament and the New Testament.
00:03:28 --> 00:03:37 And so today we're entering into this new series called Generous God.
00:03:39 --> 00:03:41 And it's going to carry us to the end of term.
00:03:42 --> 00:03:53 And the basic idea is that God's generosity to us in Jesus Christ produces a life of generosity.
00:03:53 --> 00:04:03 Or another way to put that, God's love for us produces a life of love.
00:04:04 --> 00:04:07 Sacrifice produces sacrifice.
00:04:07 --> 00:04:18 Now, when I say generosity, I'm not meaning exclusively or primarily money.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:23 I mean generosity in all of life.
00:04:25 --> 00:04:29 Money is but a means of transaction.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:33 It's a commodity in the same way that my time is a commodity.
00:04:34 --> 00:04:39 Some of us can be generous with finances but not generous at all with our time.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:42 And not generous with our emotional life.
00:04:44 --> 00:04:46 I'm talking here about generosity in all of life.
00:04:46 --> 00:04:50 With times, talents, treasures, testimony, relationships, hospitality, forgiveness.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:52 All of life.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:54 A life of love.
00:04:54 --> 00:05:00 Now, our text for this series is the travel narrative in Luke.
00:05:00 --> 00:05:05 And it's called the travel narrative in Luke because Jesus is traveling.
00:05:07 --> 00:05:08 Who would have thought?
00:05:08 --> 00:05:11 He's on a journey with his disciples.
00:05:12 --> 00:05:18 Starts at Luke chapter 9 verse 51 where Jesus resolutely, it says there,
00:05:18 --> 00:05:20 he set his face to Jerusalem.
00:05:20 --> 00:05:28 And it ends in chapter 19 verse 44 when we discover that Jesus has arrived in Jerusalem.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:33 And all the way along he teaches his disciples what it means to follow him.
00:05:34 --> 00:05:36 And he says some radical stuff.
00:05:38 --> 00:05:42 What we discover in the travel narrative is through the stories Jesus tells
00:05:42 --> 00:05:47 that he turns the thinking of the world upside down and inside out.
00:05:47 --> 00:05:51 Hence the graphic we have in front of us of a wheat field that's upside down.
00:05:51 --> 00:05:52 Not because we're in Australia.
00:05:53 --> 00:05:54 It's because it's upside down.
00:05:55 --> 00:06:03 The travel narrative of all these stories that Jesus tells is he messes with the value system
00:06:03 --> 00:06:04 of the world in which we live.
00:06:04 --> 00:06:15 And there's probably no greater story, more controversial story he told
00:06:15 --> 00:06:19 than the story of the Good Samaritan that Nolene just read out for us just then in chapter 10.
00:06:19 --> 00:06:21 So three points today.
00:06:21 --> 00:06:23 The mandate for a generous life, the magnitude of the generous life,
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 and the motivation for a generous life.
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 You'll see that on St. Paul's app.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:27 Open that up.
00:06:28 --> 00:06:31 And Luke chapter 10, kicking off with verse 25.
00:06:31 --> 00:06:39 The context of this story and the mandate for the generous life is where an expert in biblical law
00:06:39 --> 00:06:46 asks Jesus what must he do to receive eternal life.
00:06:46 --> 00:06:52 And we are told that he asked Jesus this question because he wants to trap Jesus.
00:06:52 --> 00:07:03 He wants to trap Jesus because Jesus has been doing what they think he shouldn't be doing.
00:07:04 --> 00:07:08 And that is welcoming people, welcoming sinners.
00:07:08 --> 00:07:14 Jesus hanging out with people that he shouldn't be hanging out with.
00:07:15 --> 00:07:18 And in their mind, he's disobeying the law.
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 Jesus is open.
00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 He is friendly to sinners.
00:07:22 --> 00:07:31 And this scholar in this moment wants to expose Jesus as someone who does not respect the word of God.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 That's his intent.
00:07:34 --> 00:07:37 He asked Jesus, what must I do to be saved?
00:07:38 --> 00:07:40 What must I do to be accepted by God?
00:07:40 --> 00:07:46 And he expects Jesus as someone who's not taking God's word seriously to say,
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 it doesn't matter.
00:07:47 --> 00:07:50 Look, in the end, we'll all get there.
00:07:50 --> 00:07:52 In the end, it'll all be fine.
00:07:53 --> 00:07:55 Just do some good stuff.
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 That's what he's expecting Jesus to say.
00:07:58 --> 00:08:00 God will accept everyone.
00:08:00 --> 00:08:03 But instead, it's Jesus who traps him.
00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 And it's a good trap.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 Never be afraid to be trapped by Jesus.
00:08:09 --> 00:08:11 It will turn out for your ultimate benefit.
00:08:11 --> 00:08:16 The law expert's heart is exposed by Jesus here.
00:08:16 --> 00:08:19 And Jesus asked him, well, what does the law say?
00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 And he gives Jesus a summary of the law.
00:08:21 --> 00:08:24 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength,
00:08:24 --> 00:08:27 with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 Which is great.
00:08:28 --> 00:08:32 You know, like, it's much better for Luke not to have to record the entire law again,
00:08:32 --> 00:08:34 the whole Torah, and put it in there.
00:08:34 --> 00:08:38 He does a summary version, which is what the Old Testament does.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:40 Deuteronomy 6, Leviticus 18.
00:08:40 --> 00:08:42 Does a summary of the law.
00:08:43 --> 00:08:45 Love God, love your neighbor.
00:08:46 --> 00:08:49 What does it mean to, first of all, love God?
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 What does that mean?
00:08:51 --> 00:08:56 Archbishop William Temple put it like this.
00:08:57 --> 00:08:59 Your religion is what you do with your solitude.
00:09:00 --> 00:09:02 There's a description of what it means to love God.
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 Your religion is what you do with your solitude.
00:09:07 --> 00:09:12 In other words, where does your mind go naturally in the moment of quiet?
00:09:12 --> 00:09:15 I know we don't allow ourselves quiet very much nowadays,
00:09:15 --> 00:09:18 but where does it go in a moment of quiet?
00:09:18 --> 00:09:24 In other words, where does it love to dwell?
00:09:27 --> 00:09:29 Where does your mind love to dwell?
00:09:30 --> 00:09:30 Is it God?
00:09:31 --> 00:09:32 Is it his love?
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 Is it his characteristics?
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 Is it his attributes?
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 Is it his excellencies?
00:09:37 --> 00:09:39 You know, when that moment where the TV's off,
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 and you're not scrolling through Facebook,
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 and you're not updating your life,
00:09:42 --> 00:09:46 and you have, just, I need 10 minutes to consider the excellencies of God.
00:09:46 --> 00:09:49 There's a go there, naturally.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:53 That's what it means, according to Archbishop William Temple.
00:09:53 --> 00:09:55 It means to love God, is that you are dwelling on him.
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 So do you love God?
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 William Temple says,
00:10:09 --> 00:10:13 Where it goes is your real religion,
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 your real God,
00:10:15 --> 00:10:15 your real faith,
00:10:16 --> 00:10:16 your real salvation,
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 your real hope.
00:10:19 --> 00:10:21 The first test
00:10:21 --> 00:10:23 is love God so much
00:10:23 --> 00:10:26 that he dominates your solitude.
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 Love him so much
00:10:28 --> 00:10:31 that you are content in any circumstance,
00:10:31 --> 00:10:35 because you will always have what you want the most.
00:10:35 --> 00:10:40 So let me ask you,
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 anyone here pass that test?
00:10:43 --> 00:10:43 Anyone?
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 Okay.
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 Let's leave that.
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 That's only 50% of the test.
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 One more to go.
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 Love your neighbor as yourself.
00:10:56 --> 00:10:58 As yourself.
00:10:58 --> 00:11:03 Meet the needs of your neighbor
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 with all the force,
00:11:05 --> 00:11:05 all the joy,
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 all the speed,
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 all the power
00:11:08 --> 00:11:10 by which you meet your own needs.
00:11:13 --> 00:11:15 Be as happy for them
00:11:15 --> 00:11:17 when their need is met
00:11:17 --> 00:11:19 as when your own is met.
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 Is that it?
00:11:24 --> 00:11:24 That's all?
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 Pretty simple.
00:11:26 --> 00:11:26 Well,
00:11:27 --> 00:11:31 when you see the law,
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 when you see what the law is after,
00:11:34 --> 00:11:34 as opposed to,
00:11:35 --> 00:11:35 I've obeyed that one,
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 I've obeyed that one,
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 tick, tick, tick, tick, tick.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 When you actually see
00:11:38 --> 00:11:40 what the intent of the law is,
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 you go,
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 wow,
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 I'm starting to feel the force of it now.
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 It is brilliant
00:11:50 --> 00:11:52 what Jesus does here,
00:11:52 --> 00:11:55 because the law outlines
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 a way of life
00:11:56 --> 00:11:58 that is right,
00:11:58 --> 00:12:00 but the force of the law
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 helps me to understand
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 that I cannot do it.
00:12:05 --> 00:12:08 The law is the way of life,
00:12:08 --> 00:12:10 but it can't be the way to life.
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 That's the brilliance
00:12:13 --> 00:12:15 of what Jesus does in this moment.
00:12:15 --> 00:12:18 We should live this way,
00:12:18 --> 00:12:20 but when you see the force of it,
00:12:20 --> 00:12:22 you realize you cannot live this way.
00:12:24 --> 00:12:26 And so Jesus traps us.
00:12:29 --> 00:12:31 The mandate to live a life
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 of radical generosity
00:12:32 --> 00:12:34 and love towards others
00:12:34 --> 00:12:36 is so,
00:12:36 --> 00:12:38 so crucial
00:12:38 --> 00:12:40 that Jesus makes it,
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 in fact,
00:12:41 --> 00:12:43 the test of genuine love for God
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 in Matthew 25.
00:12:48 --> 00:12:48 Okay,
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 so that's the test.
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 That's the mandate.
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 And then we get to
00:12:51 --> 00:12:55 grappling with the magnitude of it,
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 because this is essential.
00:12:56 --> 00:12:58 What does this law expert do
00:12:58 --> 00:13:00 as soon as he hears Jesus say this?
00:13:01 --> 00:13:03 He immediately,
00:13:03 --> 00:13:04 his natural inclination
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 is to put limits around it.
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 This religious expert
00:13:08 --> 00:13:10 immediately wants to put limits.
00:13:10 --> 00:13:11 Verse 29,
00:13:11 --> 00:13:13 he wanted to justify himself,
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 and so he asked Jesus,
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 hang on,
00:13:17 --> 00:13:19 when you say neighbor,
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 who is my neighbor?
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 I mean,
00:13:23 --> 00:13:26 who do I really have to live like this with?
00:13:28 --> 00:13:30 He wants to reduce the force
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 of the biblical law
00:13:31 --> 00:13:33 so that it's reasonable,
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 so that it's doable.
00:13:34 --> 00:13:37 You see,
00:13:37 --> 00:13:39 the premise of his life
00:13:39 --> 00:13:41 has always been,
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 God will accept me
00:13:43 --> 00:13:45 because I am good.
00:13:46 --> 00:13:48 I'm good enough.
00:13:50 --> 00:13:52 So what's the minimum standard
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 that God requires?
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 And that's when Jesus launches
00:13:57 --> 00:13:59 into his most famous story,
00:13:59 --> 00:14:02 and the magnitude of the generous life
00:14:02 --> 00:14:03 becomes very clear.
00:14:04 --> 00:14:05 There's a guy traveling down
00:14:05 --> 00:14:07 from Jerusalem to Jericho.
00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 We are to assume
00:14:09 --> 00:14:11 in this story
00:14:11 --> 00:14:13 that he is a Jewish man.
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 This man gets robbed,
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 he gets stripped,
00:14:16 --> 00:14:16 he gets beaten,
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 and he's left for dead.
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 By chance,
00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 a Jewish priest
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 comes wandering by.
00:14:22 --> 00:14:22 Surely,
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 he will help.
00:14:24 --> 00:14:24 The priest
00:14:24 --> 00:14:25 couldn't be bothered.
00:14:25 --> 00:14:26 He walks on the other side
00:14:26 --> 00:14:27 of the street.
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 He didn't want to go near him.
00:14:29 --> 00:14:29 Now,
00:14:29 --> 00:14:31 a Levite comes along.
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 Again,
00:14:34 --> 00:14:35 expert in the law.
00:14:36 --> 00:14:37 Jewish man
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 comes along.
00:14:39 --> 00:14:39 You would think
00:14:39 --> 00:14:40 he's going to help
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 a fellow Jew,
00:14:41 --> 00:14:42 but he can't be bothered.
00:14:42 --> 00:14:43 Walks on the other side
00:14:43 --> 00:14:43 of the street
00:14:43 --> 00:14:44 and continues on.
00:14:45 --> 00:14:45 And then along
00:14:45 --> 00:14:47 comes the Samaritan.
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 And Jesus
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 telling this story
00:14:49 --> 00:14:50 to a mainly Jewish crowd
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 and they would have gone,
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 Samaritan?
00:14:52 --> 00:14:55 How dare he bring
00:14:55 --> 00:14:56 a Samaritan
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 into this story?
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 Jews and Samaritan tensions
00:15:01 --> 00:15:04 were incredibly deep
00:15:04 --> 00:15:06 racial tensions
00:15:06 --> 00:15:09 over a very long period of time.
00:15:09 --> 00:15:10 The Samaritans
00:15:10 --> 00:15:12 were despised
00:15:12 --> 00:15:13 more than any other
00:15:13 --> 00:15:15 people group to Jews.
00:15:15 --> 00:15:18 And the majority
00:15:18 --> 00:15:19 of Jews
00:15:19 --> 00:15:20 in Judea
00:15:20 --> 00:15:20 and Galilee
00:15:20 --> 00:15:22 absolutely
00:15:22 --> 00:15:23 detested
00:15:23 --> 00:15:24 Samaritans.
00:15:26 --> 00:15:28 And by the time
00:15:28 --> 00:15:28 of Jesus
00:15:28 --> 00:15:30 in first century
00:15:30 --> 00:15:30 Palestine,
00:15:30 --> 00:15:31 that animosity
00:15:31 --> 00:15:33 between these two groups
00:15:33 --> 00:15:34 had grown
00:15:34 --> 00:15:35 to the point
00:15:35 --> 00:15:36 over several hundred years
00:15:36 --> 00:15:37 where there was
00:15:37 --> 00:15:38 violence
00:15:38 --> 00:15:39 and murdering
00:15:39 --> 00:15:39 of one another.
00:15:43 --> 00:15:44 Genocide even.
00:15:45 --> 00:15:45 In villages.
00:15:48 --> 00:15:49 What's the Samaritan
00:15:49 --> 00:15:50 doing in Jesus'
00:15:50 --> 00:15:51 story here?
00:15:55 --> 00:15:56 The Samaritan
00:15:56 --> 00:15:58 sees the injured Jew
00:15:58 --> 00:15:58 on the side
00:15:58 --> 00:15:59 of the road
00:15:59 --> 00:16:00 and he goes
00:16:00 --> 00:16:01 over to him
00:16:01 --> 00:16:01 and he has
00:16:01 --> 00:16:03 compassion on him.
00:16:05 --> 00:16:06 He cleans him up,
00:16:06 --> 00:16:07 treats his wounds,
00:16:07 --> 00:16:08 puts him on his donkey,
00:16:09 --> 00:16:10 takes him to a local motel,
00:16:10 --> 00:16:11 checks him in,
00:16:11 --> 00:16:13 hands over his credit card,
00:16:13 --> 00:16:13 says,
00:16:13 --> 00:16:14 I'll fix up
00:16:14 --> 00:16:14 whatever the
00:16:14 --> 00:16:15 expenses are
00:16:15 --> 00:16:16 when I come back.
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 No limitation.
00:16:17 --> 00:16:17 It's one of those
00:16:17 --> 00:16:19 American Express
00:16:19 --> 00:16:20 platinum black thing,
00:16:21 --> 00:16:21 you know,
00:16:21 --> 00:16:22 no limit.
00:16:23 --> 00:16:23 Hands it over.
00:16:24 --> 00:16:24 Go for broke.
00:16:29 --> 00:16:30 This story
00:16:30 --> 00:16:31 is socially charged.
00:16:32 --> 00:16:33 It is offensive
00:16:33 --> 00:16:34 for the Jew
00:16:34 --> 00:16:35 to hear this story.
00:16:35 --> 00:16:38 So imagine
00:16:38 --> 00:16:40 I get an invitation
00:16:40 --> 00:16:45 to address
00:16:45 --> 00:16:46 a neo-Nazi
00:16:46 --> 00:16:48 far-right
00:16:48 --> 00:16:49 white supremacist
00:16:49 --> 00:16:50 rally in Australia.
00:16:50 --> 00:16:54 and I get up there
00:16:54 --> 00:16:56 and I tell this story
00:16:56 --> 00:16:58 about this
00:16:58 --> 00:17:00 Australian SAS soldier
00:17:00 --> 00:17:01 who's been blown up
00:17:01 --> 00:17:02 on the side
00:17:02 --> 00:17:02 of the road
00:17:02 --> 00:17:04 by a bomb
00:17:04 --> 00:17:06 in Afghanistan.
00:17:06 --> 00:17:07 He's lying there
00:17:07 --> 00:17:08 on the side
00:17:08 --> 00:17:08 of the road.
00:17:09 --> 00:17:09 He is
00:17:09 --> 00:17:12 dying.
00:17:13 --> 00:17:13 Australian
00:17:13 --> 00:17:14 military medic
00:17:14 --> 00:17:15 comes along,
00:17:15 --> 00:17:16 sees the man,
00:17:16 --> 00:17:17 walks on the side
00:17:17 --> 00:17:17 of the road,
00:17:17 --> 00:17:18 continues on.
00:17:20 --> 00:17:21 Australian
00:17:21 --> 00:17:22 army chaplain
00:17:22 --> 00:17:23 walks by,
00:17:23 --> 00:17:24 sees the man
00:17:24 --> 00:17:26 and continues on
00:17:26 --> 00:17:27 and leaves him
00:17:27 --> 00:17:28 there to die.
00:17:29 --> 00:17:29 But friends,
00:17:29 --> 00:17:30 let me tell you
00:17:30 --> 00:17:33 about the ISIS
00:17:33 --> 00:17:34 terrorist
00:17:34 --> 00:17:35 who came along,
00:17:36 --> 00:17:36 saw the man,
00:17:37 --> 00:17:37 treats his wounds,
00:17:38 --> 00:17:38 picks him up,
00:17:39 --> 00:17:40 puts him in his
00:17:40 --> 00:17:41 Humvee,
00:17:41 --> 00:17:42 takes him
00:17:42 --> 00:17:43 to a medical
00:17:43 --> 00:17:44 facility,
00:17:45 --> 00:17:45 treat and end,
00:17:46 --> 00:17:46 hands are over,
00:17:46 --> 00:17:48 pays for all the costs,
00:17:48 --> 00:17:49 but also
00:17:49 --> 00:17:50 pays for his
00:17:50 --> 00:17:51 military pension.
