00:00:03 --> 00:00:08 The thrust of this series has been that God's generosity to us
00:00:08 --> 00:00:13 in the Lord Jesus Christ produces a life of generosity,
00:00:13 --> 00:00:16 pervasive generosity, generosity in all areas of life,
00:00:16 --> 00:00:18 generosity with our time, with our talents, treasures,
00:00:19 --> 00:00:21 our testimony, with our relationships, hospitality,
00:00:21 --> 00:00:25 with forgiveness, all of life, all of life.
00:00:25 --> 00:00:30 And one of the challenges has been is that it's possible to be generous
00:00:31 --> 00:00:36 in one area of life without being generous in another area of life.
00:00:37 --> 00:00:39 It's quite possibly generous here but stingy over here.
00:00:40 --> 00:00:44 It's possible to give away large portions of our finances and assets
00:00:44 --> 00:00:48 while not willing to serve in a ministry.
00:00:48 --> 00:00:52 What that tells us is that our time is more valuable to us
00:00:52 --> 00:00:53 than anything else.
00:00:53 --> 00:00:59 or to not draw close to others,
00:00:59 --> 00:01:01 not to spend time but to share our hearts,
00:01:02 --> 00:01:05 to share our emotions, our feelings,
00:01:05 --> 00:01:09 because our privacy is more valuable to us
00:01:09 --> 00:01:12 than our time or our possessions.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:17 The radical generosity of God to us in Jesus Christ,
00:01:17 --> 00:01:21 it is a holistic salvation,
00:01:22 --> 00:01:27 produces a holistic, pervasive generosity
00:01:27 --> 00:01:30 in all of life of those who follow him.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:35 Radical generosity is so much more than money
00:01:35 --> 00:01:39 but it's not less than what we do with our money.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:44 That's why we've not really focused on the issue of money
00:01:44 --> 00:01:47 in this entire series right through,
00:01:47 --> 00:01:49 I dabbled in a little bit earlier on,
00:01:49 --> 00:01:50 but right through this whole term,
00:01:50 --> 00:01:52 we've not really touched on the issue of money
00:01:52 --> 00:01:54 until right today, right at the end.
00:01:55 --> 00:01:58 Because I didn't want you to think it was all just about money.
00:01:58 --> 00:01:59 And I know you've been busting,
00:01:59 --> 00:02:00 waiting for the money one to come.
00:02:01 --> 00:02:02 And so here it is today,
00:02:02 --> 00:02:04 just to complete the whole series for you.
00:02:04 --> 00:02:08 Now, why are we doing it right now?
00:02:08 --> 00:02:09 Why are we doing it?
00:02:09 --> 00:02:11 There's three reasons I want to talk about money.
00:02:12 --> 00:02:18 Number one, it's because I actually want us to celebrate today.
00:02:19 --> 00:02:21 While we have had,
00:02:21 --> 00:02:23 and you've been aware of this in communications,
00:02:24 --> 00:02:27 we've had some significant financial challenges
00:02:27 --> 00:02:28 this year as a church,
00:02:28 --> 00:02:32 due to the childcare centre not coming off earlier this year.
00:02:32 --> 00:02:36 and we've, however,
00:02:36 --> 00:02:39 continued to give as a church,
00:02:39 --> 00:02:40 which has been fantastic.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:45 Back in 2014,
00:02:46 --> 00:02:47 can't believe it was only 10 years ago,
00:02:48 --> 00:02:53 part of the funding to redevelop our entire site here
00:02:53 --> 00:02:55 was for us to take out a mortgage
00:02:55 --> 00:02:59 of about a bit over $400.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:03 We started this year
00:03:03 --> 00:03:08 with about $93 or so left to pay off on that mortgage.
00:03:09 --> 00:03:11 As of the end of last month,
00:03:11 --> 00:03:13 that is entirely paid off.
00:03:14 --> 00:03:16 St. Paul's is now debt-free
00:03:16 --> 00:03:19 for the first time since 2014.
00:03:19 --> 00:03:21 That's a celebration moment.
00:03:21 --> 00:03:23 That is a phenomenal effort.
00:03:23 --> 00:03:25 So as I talk about money today,
00:03:25 --> 00:03:29 I'm talking about it with a heart of celebration for us as a church.
00:03:29 --> 00:03:33 I think it's a phenomenal response that we've had this year.
00:03:33 --> 00:03:34 Secondly,
00:03:34 --> 00:03:35 I want to talk about money
00:03:35 --> 00:03:37 because in Luke's gospel,
00:03:37 --> 00:03:41 Jesus talks about money, possessions, greed, and wealth,
00:03:41 --> 00:03:42 a whole lot.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:46 One third of his parables in Luke
00:03:46 --> 00:03:48 are about this issue.
00:03:49 --> 00:03:50 He warns of the dangers
00:03:50 --> 00:03:53 and what it looks like to have a life of pervasive generosity.
00:03:54 --> 00:03:55 So Jesus talked about it
00:03:55 --> 00:03:56 and we want to talk about it.
00:03:56 --> 00:03:57 Thirdly,
00:03:58 --> 00:03:59 crucially,
00:03:59 --> 00:04:02 our perspective on money and possessions and wealth
00:04:02 --> 00:04:04 and how we handle them
00:04:04 --> 00:04:08 lie at the very heart of the Christian life.
00:04:10 --> 00:04:12 At the very heart of the Christian life,
00:04:12 --> 00:04:13 at the very center,
00:04:13 --> 00:04:14 the core of the Christian life.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:16 If you think that's an overstatement,
00:04:16 --> 00:04:17 it is not.
00:04:18 --> 00:04:19 I'm not using hyperbole here.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:22 The Bible emphatically demonstrates
00:04:23 --> 00:04:25 that what we do with our finances
00:04:26 --> 00:04:30 significantly influences eternity.
00:04:32 --> 00:04:34 Not just to other people's,
00:04:34 --> 00:04:35 yours.
00:04:40 --> 00:04:42 God has recorded in the Bible
00:04:42 --> 00:04:44 everything we need to know
00:04:44 --> 00:04:46 about his investment priorities,
00:04:46 --> 00:04:49 his high standard of management
00:04:49 --> 00:04:52 and the rewards he offers
00:04:52 --> 00:04:53 his faithful stewards.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:57 The issue of riches and wealth and money
00:04:57 --> 00:05:00 come up again and again and again
00:05:00 --> 00:05:03 as Jesus takes his journey towards Jerusalem.
00:05:05 --> 00:05:07 And as he draws near to Jerusalem,
00:05:09 --> 00:05:12 he's asked a question by a man known for centuries
00:05:12 --> 00:05:13 as the rich young ruler,
00:05:13 --> 00:05:15 which is our text this morning.
00:05:16 --> 00:05:18 And with this interaction with Jesus,
00:05:19 --> 00:05:22 there are three things to learn about money,
00:05:22 --> 00:05:22 wealth and possessions.
00:05:23 --> 00:05:25 And if you've got the St. Paul's app in front of you,
00:05:25 --> 00:05:27 I'd encourage you to open it up
00:05:27 --> 00:05:29 and you see the three points there in front of you.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:31 And the first one that he highlights
00:05:31 --> 00:05:34 is the danger of money and wealth.
00:05:34 --> 00:05:35 And that's our first point.
00:05:36 --> 00:05:38 We see it in the middle of the passage.
00:05:38 --> 00:05:39 We're at Luke 18.
00:05:39 --> 00:05:41 So I open that up if you haven't got it in front of you.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:43 Luke 18 verse 24.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:46 Jesus looks right at this rich young man
00:05:46 --> 00:05:47 and he says to him,
00:05:47 --> 00:05:50 how hard it is for the rich
00:05:50 --> 00:05:52 to enter the kingdom of God.
00:05:52 --> 00:05:55 Indeed, it is easier for a camel
00:05:55 --> 00:05:57 to go through the eye of a needle
00:05:57 --> 00:05:59 than for someone who is rich
00:05:59 --> 00:06:00 to enter the kingdom of God.
00:06:00 --> 00:06:03 Now, John touched on this last week.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:06 He strayed into my passage, unfortunately,
00:06:06 --> 00:06:07 but that's okay.
00:06:08 --> 00:06:10 I'm not correcting him on anything that he said.
00:06:10 --> 00:06:13 I'm just gonna remind you of what he said
00:06:13 --> 00:06:14 because it's so essential.
00:06:16 --> 00:06:20 Jesus is using the metaphor of impossibility.
00:06:21 --> 00:06:23 The camel was the largest land animal
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 the people knew at that time.
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 The eye of the needle was the smallest hole.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:30 It is impossible, in other words,
00:06:30 --> 00:06:30 he's saying here.
00:06:31 --> 00:06:35 It is impossible for the rich to get into heaven.
00:06:36 --> 00:06:38 Now, as I was writing this out,
00:06:38 --> 00:06:42 the richest person in the world at that time
00:06:42 --> 00:06:46 had a personal fortune of $251 billion.
00:06:47 --> 00:06:49 I don't know if it's gone up or down since then,
00:06:49 --> 00:06:51 but it probably doesn't matter to him a whole lot.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:58 I personally do not appear on any of the published rich lists.
00:07:00 --> 00:07:03 And yet, when Jesus says this,
00:07:03 --> 00:07:04 he's talking to me.
00:07:07 --> 00:07:08 He's talking to you.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:13 Everyone sitting in this room here,
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 he's talking to us.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:22 He is saying that it is easier for a camel
00:07:22 --> 00:07:25 to go through the eye of a needle
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 than it is for us
00:07:26 --> 00:07:29 to get into heaven.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:34 Notice the reaction of those who are listening to this.
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 Verse 26.
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 Well, who then can be saved?
00:07:37 --> 00:07:42 You see, the disciples were confused by this
00:07:42 --> 00:07:45 because in their culture, their day and age,
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 they thought it was the rich ones
00:07:47 --> 00:07:49 who were particularly blessed by God.
00:07:50 --> 00:07:51 Everything they had came from God.
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 So it must have been God
00:07:52 --> 00:07:54 who had obviously particularly blessed them
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 because of their righteousness
00:07:55 --> 00:07:57 or in some way.
00:07:57 --> 00:08:02 And Jesus' response here is,
00:08:02 --> 00:08:04 what is impossible with men
00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 is possible with God.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:10 Notice Jesus did not say,
00:08:10 --> 00:08:12 what is impossible for rich people,
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 it's possible with God.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:16 He says, what's impossible with men
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 is impossible.
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 In other words,
00:08:18 --> 00:08:20 what is impossible for all people,
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 it's possible for God.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:25 He's saying,
00:08:25 --> 00:08:30 all salvation is a miracle.
00:08:31 --> 00:08:33 It is impossible for anyone
00:08:33 --> 00:08:35 to save themselves
00:08:35 --> 00:08:38 because as Romans 3 tells us,
00:08:39 --> 00:08:42 all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
00:08:43 --> 00:08:45 It's not possible for anyone
00:08:45 --> 00:08:47 to save themselves
00:08:47 --> 00:08:52 except for God intervening
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 and doing the impossible.
00:08:56 --> 00:09:00 Now, the reason why Jesus raises that issue here
00:09:00 --> 00:09:04 is because the same thing
00:09:04 --> 00:09:11 that makes salvation impossible for all of us
00:09:11 --> 00:09:14 is made worse
00:09:14 --> 00:09:17 by wealth, money and possessions.
00:09:17 --> 00:09:22 In the Old Testament book of Proverbs,
00:09:23 --> 00:09:25 it's a great book
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 if you have never read it,
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 it's about,
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 really about primarily concerned
00:09:28 --> 00:09:30 with how to navigate life
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 in God's world well.
00:09:32 --> 00:09:34 The Proverbs talks a lot about money
00:09:34 --> 00:09:36 and it talks,
00:09:37 --> 00:09:40 it's particularly got two very important things
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 to say
00:09:41 --> 00:09:44 about the spiritual power of money.
00:09:44 --> 00:09:46 Firstly,
00:09:47 --> 00:09:49 it says that money has the power
00:09:49 --> 00:09:52 to distract you
00:09:52 --> 00:09:54 from what's important in life.
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 Distracted enough
00:09:57 --> 00:10:00 so that you actually don't ask
00:10:00 --> 00:10:03 the really important questions of life
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 or why am I here
00:10:04 --> 00:10:07 and what am I really meant to accomplish in life?
00:10:07 --> 00:10:09 In fact,
00:10:09 --> 00:10:11 it can even be so distracting
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 for Christians
00:10:12 --> 00:10:15 that they don't think
00:10:15 --> 00:10:17 about the deeper issues of life.
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 What are my priorities?
00:10:20 --> 00:10:22 What is my next step?
00:10:25 --> 00:10:27 Proverbs 11 verse 4 says,
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 wealth is worthless
00:10:28 --> 00:10:30 in the day of wrath
00:10:30 --> 00:10:32 but righteousness delivers from death.
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 What that's saying there is
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 money can't help you.
00:10:36 --> 00:10:38 It can't save you.
00:10:38 --> 00:10:40 When the troubles of life hit,
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 it can't help you.
00:10:41 --> 00:10:42 It does try to give you
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 some sort of a delusion
00:10:43 --> 00:10:46 into think that if you've got enough money,
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 it will help you in those moments.
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 I get the cancer diagnosis,
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 I've got enough money,
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 I can go to the best doctors
00:10:51 --> 00:10:53 to try and get that solved.
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 I've got a leg up there.
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 Get myself in trouble with the law,
00:10:58 --> 00:10:58 got enough money,
00:10:58 --> 00:11:00 I can hire the best barristers
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 to get me out of trouble.
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 It gives you the illusion
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 that it will keep you safe.
00:11:06 --> 00:11:08 But you're not safe.
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 You're not safe from grief,
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 from bereavement,
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 from illness,
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 from disaster.
00:11:14 --> 00:11:14 Ironically,
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 you're not even safe
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 from financial ruin
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 if you've got lots of money.
00:11:18 --> 00:11:20 Money can't stop death,
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 it can't stop tragedy,
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 heartbreak,
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 and when it comes,
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 if you've spent your life
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 pursuing it,
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 trusting in it,
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 living for it,
00:11:29 --> 00:11:32 it won't give you anything back.
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 Money has the power
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 to distract us
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 from the important questions
00:11:38 --> 00:11:38 of life.
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 The second thing
00:11:40 --> 00:11:40 that Proverbs says
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 about money
00:11:41 --> 00:11:43 is it distorts
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 your self-image.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 In Proverbs 30,
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 verses 8 and 9,
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 it says,
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 give me neither poverty
00:11:51 --> 00:11:51 nor riches,
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 but give me only
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 my daily bread,
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 otherwise I will have
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 too much
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 and disown you
00:11:58 --> 00:11:58 and say,
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 who is the Lord?
00:12:00 --> 00:12:05 To see a person
00:12:05 --> 00:12:09 humbled under prosperity,
00:12:10 --> 00:12:13 to see a person
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 humbled under prosperity
00:12:14 --> 00:12:16 would have to be
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 one of the greatest
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 rarities in the world.
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 In fact,
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 I remember reading once,
00:12:25 --> 00:12:25 someone said,
00:12:26 --> 00:12:28 it's amazing how
00:12:28 --> 00:12:30 the wealthy self-made person
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 becomes an expert
00:12:31 --> 00:12:33 at everything
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 in life.
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 Not just their area
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 of expertise,
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 but everything
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 in life.
00:12:44 --> 00:12:46 Only the self-made
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 wealthy person
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 seems to have
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 that problem.
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 It puts the person
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 into a place
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 where they say,
00:12:58 --> 00:12:59 who is God?
00:12:59 --> 00:13:00 Why do I need him?
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 That's the danger
00:13:03 --> 00:13:03 of wealth.
00:13:04 --> 00:13:06 So why is it so dangerous?
00:13:06 --> 00:13:06 We're going to go back
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 to the beginning
00:13:07 --> 00:13:07 of this passage
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 and unpack
00:13:08 --> 00:13:10 the second point,
00:13:10 --> 00:13:10 why wealth
00:13:10 --> 00:13:11 is so dangerous
00:13:11 --> 00:13:11 for us.
00:13:12 --> 00:13:12 So again,
00:13:13 --> 00:13:13 Luke 18,
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 verse 18.
00:13:16 --> 00:13:16 A certain ruler
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 asked him,
00:13:17 --> 00:13:17 good teacher,
00:13:18 --> 00:13:18 what must I do
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 to inherit eternal life?
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 Why do you call me
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 good?
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 Jesus answered,
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 no one is good
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 except God alone.
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 You know the commandments,
00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 you shall not commit adultery,
00:13:26 --> 00:13:27 you shall not murder,
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 you shall not steal,
00:13:28 --> 00:13:30 you shall not give false testimony.
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 Honor your father
00:13:31 --> 00:13:31 and your mother,
00:13:31 --> 00:13:33 all these I have kept
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 since I was a boy,
00:13:35 --> 00:13:35 he said.
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 Now,
00:13:38 --> 00:13:41 when we read that,
00:13:41 --> 00:13:43 we should be shocked.
00:13:43 --> 00:13:46 We should be shocked
00:13:46 --> 00:13:48 by Jesus' answer
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 to the question,
00:13:49 --> 00:13:50 what must I do
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 to inherit eternal life?
00:13:51 --> 00:13:52 Because it appears,
00:13:53 --> 00:13:53 in fact,
00:13:53 --> 00:13:53 not just appears,
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 it's what Jesus says,
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 obey the Ten Commandments.
00:13:57 --> 00:13:58 We should be shocked
00:13:58 --> 00:13:58 by that.
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 The implication is
00:14:00 --> 00:14:01 that's how on earth
00:14:01 --> 00:14:02 you get salvation.
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 Be good
00:14:04 --> 00:14:06 is what Jesus says.
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 This should shock us
00:14:08 --> 00:14:10 because immediately
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 before this,
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 Jesus tells the story
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 the Pharisee
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 and the tax collector
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 where the obedient
00:14:15 --> 00:14:17 religious man
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 went home
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 not saved.
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 But the sinner
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 is saved.
00:14:25 --> 00:14:25 So,
00:14:26 --> 00:14:27 what's Jesus do?
00:14:28 --> 00:14:28 I mean,
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 come on Jesus.
00:14:30 --> 00:14:31 Why did you not
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 just pull out
00:14:32 --> 00:14:33 two ways to live?
00:14:34 --> 00:14:34 You know,
00:14:35 --> 00:14:35 take the guy
00:14:35 --> 00:14:36 through Alpha
00:14:36 --> 00:14:37 for goodness sake.
00:14:38 --> 00:14:39 Why say that?
00:14:42 --> 00:14:44 Why did he not say,
00:14:44 --> 00:14:46 I am on my way
00:14:46 --> 00:14:47 to Jerusalem
00:14:47 --> 00:14:49 to die on a cross
00:14:49 --> 00:14:50 to pay a ransom
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 to take the penalty
00:14:51 --> 00:14:53 that you deserve
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 for your sin
00:14:54 --> 00:14:55 and if you put
00:14:55 --> 00:14:56 your trust in me
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 you'll have eternal life
00:14:57 --> 00:14:58 and salvation.
00:14:58 --> 00:14:59 Why did he not say that?
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 Given it's consistent
00:15:01 --> 00:15:01 with the New Testament
00:15:01 --> 00:15:03 and everything else he said.
00:15:03 --> 00:15:08 that's because
00:15:08 --> 00:15:09 to say to this young man
00:15:09 --> 00:15:10 I've come to die
00:15:10 --> 00:15:11 for your sins
00:15:11 --> 00:15:11 would have been
00:15:11 --> 00:15:12 incomprehensible
00:15:12 --> 00:15:13 to him.
00:15:16 --> 00:15:17 Like most people
00:15:17 --> 00:15:18 he didn't think
00:15:18 --> 00:15:20 he had a problem.
00:15:21 --> 00:15:22 His culture told him
00:15:22 --> 00:15:23 he didn't have a problem.
00:15:25 --> 00:15:26 Look at what he says
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 in verse 21.
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 All these I've kept
00:15:28 --> 00:15:29 since I was a boy.
00:15:29 --> 00:15:31 In other words
00:15:31 --> 00:15:33 I don't need
