00:00:09 --> 00:00:14 the school organised a Father's Day gift system.
00:00:14 --> 00:00:16 The kids would bring in some money,
00:00:17 --> 00:00:21 and they'd get a gift for their dad to keep for Sunday.
00:00:23 --> 00:00:28 So I gave little Sonia some money for this system.
00:00:30 --> 00:00:33 And when she came home, she was crying.
00:00:33 --> 00:00:34 And I said, why are you crying?
00:00:35 --> 00:00:39 And she said, because I didn't get a Father's Day gift for you.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:40 And I said, oh, why not?
00:00:42 --> 00:00:43 Were there not any left?
00:00:44 --> 00:00:44 Did they run out?
00:00:44 --> 00:00:45 She said, no, that wasn't the problem.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:46 I said, what was the problem?
00:00:47 --> 00:00:50 She said, Daddy, I spent all the money on cupcakes and ate them all.
00:00:50 --> 00:01:02 One of life's biggest mysteries is that we don't always do what we want to do.
00:01:03 --> 00:01:06 She wanted desperately to buy a Father's Day present,
00:01:06 --> 00:01:09 and she was so sad after the fact that she didn't.
00:01:11 --> 00:01:13 But it just didn't turn out that way.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:20 I was reading in the newspaper this weekend a little segment on Clive James,
00:01:20 --> 00:01:25 who I really enjoy as a writer and an organiser of comedy.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:33 And he was lamenting the fact of some things in his personal life that he'd done
00:01:33 --> 00:01:36 that had wrecked his own marriage and somebody else's as well.
00:01:36 --> 00:01:41 And he said, you know, I knew it was wrong, and I knew it was silly,
00:01:41 --> 00:01:43 but I did it anyway, and I wish I hadn't.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:50 It's not just little children that do this sort of thing, but grown people as well.
00:01:51 --> 00:01:53 If you're human, you'll know what I'm talking about.
00:01:54 --> 00:01:56 If you're not, you probably need to replace your batteries.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:02 We don't like self-centred people, but frequently enough, that's us.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:06 We know what God requires of us,
00:02:07 --> 00:02:10 but we're keen to spot it when it doesn't happen in others.
00:02:12 --> 00:02:16 People having an affair with a married person know that it's wrong,
00:02:17 --> 00:02:20 hence the secrecy, but we still do it, nonetheless.
00:02:21 --> 00:02:23 And afterwards we say how silly we were.
00:02:25 --> 00:02:31 Well, the Apostle Paul had the same kind of experience of this life.
00:02:31 --> 00:02:34 And he writes in verse 21,
00:02:35 --> 00:02:36 so I find this law at work.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:41 Although I want to do good, evil is right there with me.
00:02:44 --> 00:02:47 And I wonder if that's your experience of life.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:53 And have you got any ideas about why that might be the case?
00:02:54 --> 00:02:57 Why is it that even though we know what the right thing is to do,
00:02:57 --> 00:02:59 and even though we want that right thing,
00:03:00 --> 00:03:02 we still sometimes don't do it.
00:03:03 --> 00:03:04 Why is that?
00:03:06 --> 00:03:10 Some philosophers put this down to our fleshly bodies
00:03:10 --> 00:03:13 as if we're a rational mind,
00:03:13 --> 00:03:16 but we're contaminated every now and then
00:03:16 --> 00:03:18 by a polluted stomach.
00:03:19 --> 00:03:22 You know, my rational mind knew the right thing to do,
00:03:22 --> 00:03:25 but my libido overcame me in a moment of fleshly weakness.
00:03:27 --> 00:03:29 And so as a result, what they recommended
00:03:29 --> 00:03:34 to overcome this problem was a strict regime of discipline.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:40 Other people maintained that what we needed was more education.
00:03:41 --> 00:03:45 And so jails famously became places of re-education,
00:03:45 --> 00:03:46 not of punishment.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:52 And there are many disagreements about what this source
00:03:52 --> 00:03:57 of this recalcitrant streak within us is
00:03:57 --> 00:03:59 and where it comes from.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:04 Well, the Apostle Paul, in our reading from Romans today,
00:04:05 --> 00:04:06 also experienced this weakness.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:09 And for him,
00:04:09 --> 00:04:13 it proved that knowing the right thing
00:04:13 --> 00:04:16 can't make you good
00:04:16 --> 00:04:20 and wanting the right thing
00:04:20 --> 00:04:23 can't make you good either.
00:04:24 --> 00:04:26 Listen to him in verse 22.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:28 For my inner being,
00:04:28 --> 00:04:31 I delight in God's law.
00:04:31 --> 00:04:34 He was not an evil, malicious man by nature.
00:04:36 --> 00:04:37 But verse 23,
00:04:37 --> 00:04:41 but I see another law at work in me,
00:04:41 --> 00:04:44 waging war against the law of my mind
00:04:44 --> 00:04:46 and making me a prisoner
00:04:46 --> 00:04:49 of the law of sin at work in me.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:53 Now, Paul was nothing if not self-disciplined.
00:04:55 --> 00:04:57 He was also very well educated.
00:04:59 --> 00:05:01 But yet, Paul complains
00:05:01 --> 00:05:03 that he's not the good, righteous, kind person
00:05:03 --> 00:05:06 that he wanted to be.
00:05:11 --> 00:05:12 And what he's also saying,
00:05:12 --> 00:05:14 although he won't write it explicitly,
00:05:15 --> 00:05:19 is that we too are not the good, kind, righteous people
00:05:19 --> 00:05:22 that we would like to be.
00:05:22 --> 00:05:25 Now, I don't mean this
00:05:25 --> 00:05:28 in a trivial sense
00:05:28 --> 00:05:30 of simply not being perfect.
00:05:31 --> 00:05:33 Paul is not sweating the small stuff here.
00:05:33 --> 00:05:35 He's not lamenting the fact
00:05:35 --> 00:05:37 that he forgot to help some old lady
00:05:37 --> 00:05:38 over the road,
00:05:38 --> 00:05:39 cross the road,
00:05:39 --> 00:05:40 or that he admitted to give somebody
00:05:40 --> 00:05:42 a cup of tea at his home one day.
00:05:42 --> 00:05:44 He's talking about real matters
00:05:44 --> 00:05:46 where he caused real hurt
00:05:46 --> 00:05:47 to real people.
00:05:47 --> 00:05:53 What a wretched man I am, he says.
00:05:54 --> 00:05:55 Who will rescue me
00:05:55 --> 00:05:57 from this body
00:05:57 --> 00:05:59 that is subject to death?
00:06:02 --> 00:06:03 What a wretched man I am.
00:06:04 --> 00:06:05 He's not talking about
00:06:05 --> 00:06:07 trivial matters
00:06:07 --> 00:06:08 of
00:06:08 --> 00:06:10 niceness here.
00:06:10 --> 00:06:11 He's talking about
00:06:11 --> 00:06:13 the real gritty issues
00:06:13 --> 00:06:14 of human life.
00:06:15 --> 00:06:16 What a wretched man I am.
00:06:16 --> 00:06:18 How could he stand
00:06:18 --> 00:06:19 before God
00:06:19 --> 00:06:21 knowing
00:06:21 --> 00:06:23 who he was?
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 God had given Moses
00:06:25 --> 00:06:26 very plain instructions.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 Worship no other gods,
00:06:29 --> 00:06:29 do not murder,
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 do not best bear false witness
00:06:31 --> 00:06:32 against your neighbour
00:06:32 --> 00:06:34 and so on.
00:06:36 --> 00:06:38 In church in earlier times,
00:06:39 --> 00:06:40 Christians used to read out
00:06:40 --> 00:06:42 this law of Moses each week.
00:06:43 --> 00:06:45 It was not that they had forgotten
00:06:45 --> 00:06:46 some of the laws,
00:06:46 --> 00:06:48 as if they were to
00:06:48 --> 00:06:49 suddenly chirp up,
00:06:49 --> 00:06:50 oh, do not murder,
00:06:50 --> 00:06:50 oh, that's right.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:51 I thought there was
00:06:51 --> 00:06:52 something wrong this week
00:06:52 --> 00:06:54 when I killed my neighbour.
00:06:55 --> 00:06:57 But it reminded them
00:06:57 --> 00:06:59 that they would experience
00:06:59 --> 00:07:01 and did experience
00:07:01 --> 00:07:02 this same problem.
00:07:03 --> 00:07:04 That whilst they knew
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 what was right
00:07:05 --> 00:07:07 and whilst they even
00:07:07 --> 00:07:09 wanted what was right,
00:07:10 --> 00:07:12 they frequently caved in
00:07:12 --> 00:07:14 to what was wrong.
00:07:16 --> 00:07:18 And so Paul then concludes,
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 so I myself,
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 in my mind,
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 am a slave to God's law
00:07:22 --> 00:07:24 in that best sense
00:07:24 --> 00:07:24 of the word.
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 But in my sinful nature,
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 I am a slave
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 to the law of sin.
00:07:30 --> 00:07:35 Well, at this point,
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 you may think that Paul
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 is overreacting
00:07:37 --> 00:07:39 and you may want to tell Paul
00:07:39 --> 00:07:40 to lie down on a couch,
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 take a Valium
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 or something like that.
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 But Paul is not
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 talking about
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 some personal crisis.
00:07:48 --> 00:07:48 He's describing
00:07:48 --> 00:07:50 a big picture problem,
00:07:50 --> 00:07:52 not just of his own,
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 but of all people.
00:07:53 --> 00:07:56 You may think
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 that Paul's view of God
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 is too strict,
00:07:58 --> 00:08:00 his standards too high.
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 Maybe God doesn't mind
00:08:02 --> 00:08:02 so much
00:08:02 --> 00:08:04 about wrong
00:08:04 --> 00:08:05 in the world.
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 But Paul's
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 not addressing
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 how high
00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 God's standards are here.
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 He's talking about
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 why there is
00:08:15 --> 00:08:16 that thing within us
00:08:16 --> 00:08:16 that drives us
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 in the wrong direction.
00:08:20 --> 00:08:21 But by the way,
00:08:21 --> 00:08:21 be careful about
00:08:21 --> 00:08:22 wanting God
00:08:22 --> 00:08:23 to lower his standards.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:25 In any case,
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 Paul considers
00:08:26 --> 00:08:28 that this bentness
00:08:28 --> 00:08:29 within us
00:08:29 --> 00:08:31 makes us unfit
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 for God
00:08:32 --> 00:08:36 and unfit
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 for living
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 the good life
00:08:38 --> 00:08:40 for we cannot do
00:08:40 --> 00:08:42 what we want to do.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 Well, this conclusion
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 is very offensive
00:08:47 --> 00:08:49 to many people
00:08:49 --> 00:08:51 because it implies
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 for a start
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 that Moses
00:08:53 --> 00:08:53 and the prophets
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 were achieving
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 very little
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 when they spoke
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 the words of the law
00:08:58 --> 00:09:00 over and over again
00:09:00 --> 00:09:00 to the people
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 of Israel
00:09:01 --> 00:09:03 as if that would help.
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 In my context,
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 in the Middle East,
00:09:08 --> 00:09:10 the laws of Islam
00:09:10 --> 00:09:12 are recounted
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 over and over again
00:09:13 --> 00:09:15 and people are urged
00:09:15 --> 00:09:17 to pray five times
00:09:17 --> 00:09:18 a day
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 and you can't avoid it.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 The loudspeakers
00:09:21 --> 00:09:24 really fill your ears
00:09:24 --> 00:09:26 five times a day.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:30 But what Paul is saying
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 is that
00:09:31 --> 00:09:33 even when people
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 know God's law
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 and even when
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 they want to do it,
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 this principle of evil
00:09:39 --> 00:09:41 still lies within them
00:09:41 --> 00:09:43 and makes them do
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 the opposite
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 of what they both do,
00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 opposite of what they want
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 and opposite of what they know.
00:09:48 --> 00:09:51 They may delight
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 in God's law
00:09:52 --> 00:09:53 but that sinful nature
00:09:53 --> 00:09:55 inside them
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 pushes them
00:09:56 --> 00:09:56 the wrong way
00:09:56 --> 00:09:58 just as it does us.
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 No amount of learning
00:10:02 --> 00:10:04 religious laws,
00:10:04 --> 00:10:06 no amount of Bible study,
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 no amount of meditating
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 on God's law
00:10:09 --> 00:10:11 can fix this problem.
00:10:11 --> 00:10:15 The problem is so much
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 inside of us
00:10:16 --> 00:10:18 that Paul calls it
00:10:18 --> 00:10:20 part of our flesh,
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 part of our makeup.
00:10:23 --> 00:10:26 It's like a recalcitrant streak
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 within us.
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 Paul details this problem
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 because he doesn't want
00:10:34 --> 00:10:36 the people in Rome
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 to whom he's writing
00:10:37 --> 00:10:39 be under any illusions
00:10:39 --> 00:10:41 about where
00:10:41 --> 00:10:43 their hope comes from.
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 And he gives us
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 this hope
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 in chapter 8
00:10:48 --> 00:10:50 verses 1 to 4.
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 It's a very dense paragraph
00:10:52 --> 00:10:54 but the ideas
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 are simple enough
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 so please follow along
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 if you've got it open
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 in front of you.
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 And he begins in verse 1
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 and he says,
00:11:00 --> 00:11:00 you see,
00:11:01 --> 00:11:01 there is now
00:11:01 --> 00:11:03 no condemnation
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 for those
00:11:04 --> 00:11:06 who are in Christ Jesus.
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 No condemnation.
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 God knows
00:11:12 --> 00:11:14 what we are like.
00:11:19 --> 00:11:21 No fear
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 before God's
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 justice.
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 No fear
00:11:25 --> 00:11:27 of the future
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 for those
00:11:28 --> 00:11:30 who are in
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 Christ Jesus.
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 And why?
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 Well, in the next verse
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 he explains,
00:11:36 --> 00:11:39 and it turns out
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 that both
00:11:40 --> 00:11:40 the death
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 of Christ
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 and the resurrection
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 of Christ
00:11:43 --> 00:11:45 play a role.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:47 He says in verse 2,
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 because through
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 Christ Jesus
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 the law
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 of the Spirit
00:11:52 --> 00:11:54 who gives life
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 has set you free
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 from the law
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 of sin and death.
00:11:58 --> 00:11:58 death.
00:12:00 --> 00:12:00 This
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 recalcitrant
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 streak
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 within us,
00:12:04 --> 00:12:04 this
00:12:04 --> 00:12:05 law
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 of sin
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 and death,
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 Paul says,
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 can only be broken
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 by the Spirit
00:12:10 --> 00:12:12 who gives life.
00:12:16 --> 00:12:16 The power
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 that God,
00:12:17 --> 00:12:17 that Paul
00:12:17 --> 00:12:19 sees in himself,
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 making him do
00:12:20 --> 00:12:20 the opposite
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 of what he wants
00:12:21 --> 00:12:22 and what he knows,
00:12:22 --> 00:12:24 this can only
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 be dealt with
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 by God's
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 Holy Spirit,
00:12:27 --> 00:12:29 the power
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 of the Spirit
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 who gives life.
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 And this is
00:12:33 --> 00:12:33 fairly close
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 to what
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 systematic theologians
00:12:35 --> 00:12:35 call
00:12:35 --> 00:12:37 sanctification,
00:12:38 --> 00:12:38 if you ever
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 read theology,
00:12:40 --> 00:12:40 the breaking
00:12:40 --> 00:12:42 of sin's
00:12:42 --> 00:12:42 power
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 in us.
00:12:46 --> 00:12:46 And notice
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 that this new life
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 comes from nothing
00:12:48 --> 00:12:48 that we do,
00:12:49 --> 00:12:49 it comes from
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 the Holy Spirit
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 in Christ.
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 It's not a result
00:12:53 --> 00:12:54 of years
00:12:54 --> 00:12:55 of spiritual
00:12:55 --> 00:12:55 discipline,
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 it's a gift.
00:13:01 --> 00:13:01 Now look
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 at verse 3.
00:13:03 --> 00:13:05 For what the law
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 was powerless
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 to do,
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 because it was
00:13:09 --> 00:13:09 weakened
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 by the flesh,
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 God did
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 by sending
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 his own
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 son
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 in the likeness
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 of sinful flesh
00:13:17 --> 00:13:19 to be a sin
00:13:19 --> 00:13:19 offering.
00:13:20 --> 00:13:20 And so
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 God condemned
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 sin
00:13:22 --> 00:13:24 in the flesh.
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 Verse 2
00:13:28 --> 00:13:28 talked about
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 the Holy Spirit
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 and the new life,
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 but this verse
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 speaks of another
00:13:32 --> 00:13:32 aspect,
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 the killing off,
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 the condemning
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 of that recalcitrant
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 streak
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 within us,
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 the condemning
00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 of sin,
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 the death
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 of Jesus
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 as a sin
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 offering.
00:13:44 --> 00:13:44 sin.
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 The problem
00:13:48 --> 00:13:48 we've been
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 talking about,
00:13:49 --> 00:13:50 this sin
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 in our life,
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 needs to be
00:13:53 --> 00:13:53 addressed
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 honestly
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 by God.
00:13:58 --> 00:13:58 Sin
00:13:58 --> 00:13:59 needs to be
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 condemned,
00:14:01 --> 00:14:01 otherwise
00:14:01 --> 00:14:03 it will still
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 continue to live
00:14:04 --> 00:14:04 amongst us.
00:14:04 --> 00:14:10 God acts
00:14:10 --> 00:14:10 here
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 something like
00:14:11 --> 00:14:11 a judge
00:14:11 --> 00:14:13 in removing
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 criminals
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 from society.
00:14:16 --> 00:14:17 He condemns
00:14:17 --> 00:14:17 sin
00:14:17 --> 00:14:19 so that it
00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 might no longer
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 be present.
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 But God
00:14:24 --> 00:14:24 is a little bit
00:14:24 --> 00:14:24 different
00:14:24 --> 00:14:25 to human
00:14:25 --> 00:14:26 judges.
00:14:27 --> 00:14:27 Human judges
00:14:27 --> 00:14:28 send people
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 to jail
00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 and find them
00:14:30 --> 00:14:31 and God
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 condemns sin
00:14:32 --> 00:14:33 too,
00:14:33 --> 00:14:33 but differently.
00:14:35 --> 00:14:36 There are
00:14:36 --> 00:14:36 two main
00:14:36 --> 00:14:36 differences.
00:14:37 --> 00:14:37 Firstly,
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 he absorbs
00:14:38 --> 00:14:39 the punishment
00:14:39 --> 00:14:40 in his
