00:00:00 --> 00:00:21 There's a true story of a small village in India.
00:00:22 --> 00:00:29 And in this village, there was this family that came to a saving faith in Jesus Christ, a Savior and Lord.
00:00:30 --> 00:00:39 This agitated the village so much and everybody became so upset that an angry mob gathered and shoved them into the public square.
00:00:40 --> 00:00:44 The village chief confronted them and he said to the man,
00:00:44 --> 00:00:51 If you and your family will not recant your faith, you all will surely die.
00:00:52 --> 00:00:55 The man didn't know what to say or what to do.
00:00:55 --> 00:01:04 And so the only thing that came to mind for him were the words of a song that he himself had composed when he had first surrendered his life to God.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:06 And so he began to sing,
00:01:08 --> 00:01:09 I have decided to follow Jesus.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:12 No turning back.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:14 No turning back.
00:01:14 --> 00:01:15 No turning back.
00:01:15 --> 00:01:16 No turning back.
00:01:16 --> 00:01:20 And with that, horrifically, his children were killed.
00:01:22 --> 00:01:28 I have decided to follow Jesus.
00:01:29 --> 00:01:35 I have decided to follow Jesus.
00:01:35 --> 00:01:46 No turning back.
00:01:46 --> 00:01:50 No turning back.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:02 He was given another chance, this time with his wife's life on the line.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:05 And yet he continued to sing,
00:02:06 --> 00:02:09 Though none go with me, still I will follow.
00:02:09 --> 00:02:10 No turning back.
00:02:11 --> 00:02:12 No turning back.
00:02:12 --> 00:02:42 No turning back.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:52 After her tragic death, he was given one final opportunity, this time to save himself.
00:02:53 --> 00:02:55 And yet he continued to sing.
00:02:55 --> 00:03:07 The cross before me, the world behind me.
00:03:07 --> 00:03:09 The cross before me.
00:03:09 --> 00:03:10 The world behind me.
00:03:10 --> 00:03:14 The cross before me.
00:03:14 --> 00:03:18 The world behind me.
00:03:18 --> 00:03:21 No turning back.

00:03:24 --> 00:03:38 Even though that man and his family died on that day, something remarkable happened.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:42 a seed was planted in the heart of that village chief,
00:03:43 --> 00:03:45 a seed that began to grow over time,
00:03:45 --> 00:03:48 and eventually he called the community together
00:03:48 --> 00:03:51 in that very same neighborhood, in that very same square,
00:03:51 --> 00:03:53 and he renounced his former faith
00:03:53 --> 00:03:57 and declared his allegiance to Jesus Christ.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:03 And a celebration broke out in that moment,
00:04:03 --> 00:04:06 and the gospel began to flourish and to grow in that community,
00:04:06 --> 00:04:10 not just in that village, but across the whole region,
00:04:10 --> 00:04:13 because they had seen real faith,
00:04:13 --> 00:04:17 and they knew the true character of God
00:04:17 --> 00:04:21 because of a family that believed and sacrificed,
00:04:22 --> 00:04:24 even under the penalty of death.
00:04:27 --> 00:04:30 No turning back
00:04:30 --> 00:04:37 No turning back
00:04:37 --> 00:04:45 We've been working through for a few weeks now
00:04:45 --> 00:04:51 the chapters in John's gospel that we know of as the Farewell Discourse.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:55 It's often seen as Jesus' goodbye to his disciples,
00:04:55 --> 00:04:59 but there's more going on here than just goodbye.
00:05:00 --> 00:05:01 This is more than just,
00:05:01 --> 00:05:02 I'm leaving.
00:05:03 --> 00:05:04 This is carry on,
00:05:04 --> 00:05:06 these are marching orders,
00:05:06 --> 00:05:10 and the focus till this point has been so positive.
00:05:11 --> 00:05:12 It's been so encouraging.
00:05:13 --> 00:05:15 It's been all about comforting the disciples.
00:05:16 --> 00:05:18 If you remember back in chapter 14,
00:05:18 --> 00:05:20 Jesus began to tell his disciples
00:05:20 --> 00:05:22 that he is leaving for the purpose
00:05:22 --> 00:05:24 of preparing a room for them,
00:05:24 --> 00:05:26 that the reason he is going
00:05:26 --> 00:05:27 is because there was more,
00:05:27 --> 00:05:29 and he is going ahead of them in preparation.
00:05:30 --> 00:05:32 He told them about another counselor
00:05:32 --> 00:05:33 that he would give to them,
00:05:33 --> 00:05:33 another helper,
00:05:34 --> 00:05:35 who was going to be just like Jesus.
00:05:36 --> 00:05:37 They would not be left alone.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:39 There was another one coming from the Father.
00:05:39 --> 00:05:40 Even in chapter 15,
00:05:40 --> 00:05:41 the command to love,
00:05:42 --> 00:05:43 the command to bear fruit,
00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 it all comes in the context
00:05:45 --> 00:05:46 of being reminded
00:05:46 --> 00:05:47 that it's Jesus who is divine,
00:05:48 --> 00:05:50 that it's him who will empower them
00:05:50 --> 00:05:51 to love one another,
00:05:51 --> 00:05:52 that it's him who will enable them
00:05:52 --> 00:05:53 to bear fruit,
00:05:54 --> 00:05:55 that it's his Holy Spirit
00:05:55 --> 00:05:56 who will be with them,
00:05:56 --> 00:05:57 and the incredible promise
00:05:57 --> 00:06:00 in the back half of chapter 14
00:06:00 --> 00:06:01 that the Father and the Son
00:06:01 --> 00:06:03 will make their home
00:06:03 --> 00:06:05 with these disciples even now,
00:06:05 --> 00:06:06 that they will come
00:06:06 --> 00:06:08 and that they will dwell with them
00:06:08 --> 00:06:10 in the person of the Holy Spirit.
00:06:12 --> 00:06:13 But suddenly,
00:06:13 --> 00:06:14 when we get to this second half
00:06:14 --> 00:06:15 of chapter 15,
00:06:15 --> 00:06:16 everything shifts.
00:06:17 --> 00:06:19 There's this drastic change
00:06:19 --> 00:06:21 in the tone of what Jesus has to say
00:06:21 --> 00:06:23 because he knows
00:06:23 --> 00:06:24 that there is a reality
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 that the disciples will face
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 that is far from comforting,
00:06:28 --> 00:06:30 that is far from easy.
00:06:31 --> 00:06:33 And he begins in verse 18.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 If the world hates you,
00:06:37 --> 00:06:39 keep in mind that it hated me first.
00:06:39 --> 00:06:41 If you belong to the world,
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 it would love you as its own.
00:06:42 --> 00:06:43 As it is,
00:06:43 --> 00:06:44 you do not belong to the world,
00:06:45 --> 00:06:46 but I have chosen you out of the world.
00:06:46 --> 00:06:48 That is why the world hates you.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:50 Remember the words I spoke to you.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:52 No servant is greater than his master.
00:06:53 --> 00:06:54 If they persecuted me,
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 they will persecute you also.
00:06:56 --> 00:06:58 If they obeyed my teaching,
00:06:58 --> 00:06:59 they will obey yours also.
00:07:00 --> 00:07:01 They will treat you this way
00:07:01 --> 00:07:02 because of my name,
00:07:02 --> 00:07:03 for they do not know
00:07:03 --> 00:07:05 the one who sent me.
00:07:06 --> 00:07:08 The message Jesus has for his disciples
00:07:08 --> 00:07:11 is the world will hate you.
00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 I will be with you.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:15 I'm preparing a place for you.
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 I will make my home with you,
00:07:16 --> 00:07:18 but the world that you live in
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 will hate you.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:23 For all the good that you try and do,
00:07:23 --> 00:07:25 for all the love that you show
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 to your brothers and sisters,
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 and especially for the message
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 that you bring,
00:07:30 --> 00:07:33 that Jesus is the only hope for salvation.
00:07:34 --> 00:07:36 Because of all that,
00:07:36 --> 00:07:38 the world will hate you.
00:07:38 --> 00:07:42 The disciples need to realize
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 that they have chosen to follow
00:07:43 --> 00:07:45 a suffering saviour.
00:07:47 --> 00:07:49 That the one who they are here with,
00:07:49 --> 00:07:51 the one who they are giving their lives to,
00:07:52 --> 00:07:54 has been rejected his whole life.
00:07:54 --> 00:07:56 Very soon he will be killed,
00:07:57 --> 00:07:57 crucified,
00:07:57 --> 00:08:01 and they've got to understand
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 that's the one they're following.
00:08:03 --> 00:08:06 Following Jesus means following Jesus.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:09 And the footsteps he took
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 led him to the cross,
00:08:11 --> 00:08:13 led him to suffering and rejection
00:08:13 --> 00:08:15 and ultimately death.
00:08:16 --> 00:08:18 It shouldn't be a surprise for the disciples,
00:08:18 --> 00:08:20 but this one last time,
00:08:20 --> 00:08:20 before he leaves,
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 Jesus wants them to hear it from his mouth.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:25 The path of a Christian
00:08:25 --> 00:08:27 is one of suffering and rejection.
00:08:29 --> 00:08:32 Following Jesus means following Jesus.
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 Look at verse 22.
00:08:34 --> 00:08:34 It says,
00:08:35 --> 00:08:37 If I had not come and spoken to them,
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 they would not be guilty of sin.
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 Now, however,
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 they have no excuse for their sin.
00:08:42 --> 00:08:44 If I had not done among them
00:08:44 --> 00:08:45 what no one else did,
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 they would not be guilty of sin.
00:08:46 --> 00:08:48 But now they have seen these miracles,
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 and yet they have hated
00:08:50 --> 00:08:52 both me and my Father.
00:08:53 --> 00:08:56 Jesus arrives and begins to preach
00:08:56 --> 00:08:58 that the kingdom of God is near,
00:08:58 --> 00:09:00 begins to preach that salvation
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 and forgiveness is in him,
00:09:02 --> 00:09:04 begins to prove that he is the Son of God
00:09:04 --> 00:09:06 who can bring forgiveness
00:09:06 --> 00:09:08 by the power of his miracles,
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 by the authority of his teaching,
00:09:11 --> 00:09:13 and yet they reject him.
00:09:14 --> 00:09:17 He comes offering forgiveness and hope,
00:09:18 --> 00:09:20 but the kingdom he preached
00:09:20 --> 00:09:22 was not necessarily the kingdom
00:09:22 --> 00:09:24 that they wanted to hear about.
00:09:24 --> 00:09:26 The kingdom that Jesus preached
00:09:26 --> 00:09:28 was a kingdom of righteousness,
00:09:28 --> 00:09:30 a kingdom of holiness.
00:09:32 --> 00:09:35 And so what it did was hold a mirror up
00:09:35 --> 00:09:37 to just how unworthy the world was.
00:09:39 --> 00:09:41 Jesus' life and his miracles
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 and his perfect example
00:09:42 --> 00:09:43 and his message
00:09:43 --> 00:09:45 that he alone is the way,
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 the truth and the life,
00:09:47 --> 00:09:49 took away the opportunity
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 that the world had
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 to deceive itself
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 into thinking it was okay.
00:09:53 --> 00:09:55 His arrival meant
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 that you chose him
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 and chose life
00:09:57 --> 00:09:59 or you rejected him
00:09:59 --> 00:10:02 and chose death.
00:10:02 --> 00:10:05 It's not a surprise
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 that the world hates Jesus.
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 Nobody wants to be told
00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 that they're not good enough.
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 Nobody wants to be told
00:10:11 --> 00:10:13 that they don't measure up.
00:10:14 --> 00:10:16 And Jesus' life,
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 in its perfect holiness
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 and obedience,
00:10:19 --> 00:10:21 made obvious the sins
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 of the world he went to,
00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 made obvious the sins
00:10:24 --> 00:10:24 of his people,
00:10:25 --> 00:10:28 and the lives of the disciples
00:10:28 --> 00:10:30 will continue to offend.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:32 They will continue to show people
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 that they're not measuring up,
00:10:33 --> 00:10:35 that the standard is not okay
00:10:35 --> 00:10:37 and people will hate them for it.
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 We shouldn't be surprised
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 as Christians
00:10:40 --> 00:10:42 when the world hates us.
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 It angers people to think
00:10:44 --> 00:10:46 that we as Christians
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 can have contentment
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 and hope and joy
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 and forgiveness
00:10:49 --> 00:10:51 even when we stuff up
00:10:51 --> 00:10:51 just like they do.
00:10:52 --> 00:10:54 It angers the world
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 to think that we can be content
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 without the things
00:10:56 --> 00:10:58 that they need to be content with.
00:10:58 --> 00:11:00 It angers the world
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 that we can have joy
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 and satisfaction
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 even if we don't have
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 the dream job
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 or the dream house
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 or the 2.3 kids.
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 It angers them
00:11:10 --> 00:11:10 that Christians
00:11:10 --> 00:11:12 could trust Jesus
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 to judge
00:11:13 --> 00:11:17 rather than taking revenge
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 for themselves.
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 It's no surprise
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 that the world hates Jesus
00:11:21 --> 00:11:23 and it's no surprise
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 that it hated the disciples
00:11:24 --> 00:11:26 and it shouldn't be a surprise
00:11:26 --> 00:11:29 if it hates us as well.
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 I want you to grasp
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 the weight
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 of what Jesus says
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 in this couple of verses here.
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 We've got the luxury.
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 We can look back
00:11:36 --> 00:11:37 at these words
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 thousands of years
00:11:38 --> 00:11:38 into the future.
00:11:39 --> 00:11:41 Think about what happened
00:11:41 --> 00:11:41 just after Jesus
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 uttered these words.
00:11:42 --> 00:11:45 within a few hours
00:11:45 --> 00:11:47 of reminding the disciples
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 that the world hated him
00:11:48 --> 00:11:51 Jesus was arrested
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 tortured
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 beaten
00:11:53 --> 00:11:55 and brutally murdered.
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 For all
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 but one
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 of these 11 disciples
00:12:01 --> 00:12:05 brutal death
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 awaited them.
00:12:06 --> 00:12:09 they would follow Jesus
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 to the point
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 of being killed
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 for being a Christian.
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 Some would be crucified
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 some would be beheaded
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 some would be drawn
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 and courted.
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 It's not too strong
00:12:20 --> 00:12:20 to say
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 that the world
00:12:21 --> 00:12:22 hated the disciples.
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 It's not too strong
00:12:25 --> 00:12:25 to say
00:12:25 --> 00:12:25 that the world
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 hated Jesus.
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 But the crazy thing is
00:12:29 --> 00:12:31 as we read through that
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 and we think about
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 what happened
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 after Jesus spoke
00:12:34 --> 00:12:34 these words
00:12:34 --> 00:12:36 listen to verse 25
00:12:36 --> 00:12:38 this
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 this hatred
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 this suffering
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 this persecution
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 this death
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 this
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 is to fulfill
00:12:44 --> 00:12:45 what was written
00:12:45 --> 00:12:46 in their law
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 they hated me
00:12:47 --> 00:12:47 without reason.
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 This law
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 is the Psalms
00:12:51 --> 00:12:53 it's God's word
00:12:53 --> 00:12:53 it's the scriptures.
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 Jesus on the cross
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 was God's plan
00:12:58 --> 00:13:02 and the disciples
00:13:02 --> 00:13:04 and all the suffering
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 and opposition
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 that they faced
00:13:06 --> 00:13:08 was also part
00:13:08 --> 00:13:08 of God's plan.
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 It's kind of easy
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 for us now
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 to think of the cross
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 as being a time
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 when God is incredibly
00:13:16 --> 00:13:16 in control
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 because we know
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 how it ends.
00:13:19 --> 00:13:19 But can you imagine
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 what it would have been like
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 to stand there
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 on that first Easter
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 staring at your
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 Saviour
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 suffering
00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 straining for his
00:13:26 --> 00:13:27 last breath
00:13:27 --> 00:13:27 about to die
00:13:27 --> 00:13:30 and trying to be confident
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 that God was in control.
00:13:31 --> 00:13:35 each one of these disciples
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 would face
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 their own death
00:13:37 --> 00:13:39 and Jesus needs them
00:13:39 --> 00:13:39 to understand
00:13:39 --> 00:13:41 it's part of the plan.
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 No matter how hard
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 it gets
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 no matter how tough
00:13:45 --> 00:13:45 it is
00:13:45 --> 00:13:46 it's part
00:13:46 --> 00:13:47 of the plan.
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 God is still
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 in control.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 Jesus is warning them
00:13:53 --> 00:13:53 not so that they
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 can avoid it
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 not so they can
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 find a way around it
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 but so they can
00:13:57 --> 00:13:58 endure it.
00:13:58 --> 00:14:00 If you turn to
00:14:00 --> 00:14:00 chapter 17
00:14:00 --> 00:14:01 where Jesus is
00:14:01 --> 00:14:02 praying for his
00:14:02 --> 00:14:02 disciples
00:14:02 --> 00:14:03 in verse 15
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 his prayer says
00:14:04 --> 00:14:05 my prayer is not
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 that you take them
00:14:06 --> 00:14:07 out of the world
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 but that you protect
00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 them from the evil one.
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 Jesus doesn't want
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 his disciples
00:14:12 --> 00:14:12 to miss out
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 on this suffering
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 and persecution
00:14:14 --> 00:14:14 that's coming
00:14:14 --> 00:14:16 he just wants them
00:14:16 --> 00:14:17 to be able to
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 last the distance
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 he wants them
00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 to endure
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 he wants them
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 to get to the other
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 side and still
00:14:23 --> 00:14:25 be following Jesus
00:14:25 --> 00:14:26 still be going
00:14:26 --> 00:14:26 strong
00:14:26 --> 00:14:28 the suffering
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 is part of the
00:14:29 --> 00:14:29 journey
00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 and it's part
00:14:30 --> 00:14:30 of the plan
00:14:30 --> 00:14:31 and his prayer
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 is that the devil
00:14:32 --> 00:14:33 doesn't use the
00:14:33 --> 00:14:34 suffering to drag
00:14:34 --> 00:14:34 them away
00:14:34 --> 00:14:35 ultimately
00:14:35 --> 00:14:37 but not that the
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 suffering disappears
00:14:38 --> 00:14:38 altogether
00:14:38 --> 00:14:40 that is part of
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 the plan
00:14:41 --> 00:14:43 and what does
00:14:43 --> 00:14:43 Jesus call his
00:14:43 --> 00:14:44 disciples to do
00:14:44 --> 00:14:45 when the suffering
00:14:45 --> 00:14:46 and the persecution
00:14:46 --> 00:14:47 comes
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 verse 26
00:14:48 --> 00:14:50 when the counsellor
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 comes who I will
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 send to you
00:14:52 --> 00:14:53 from the father
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 the spirit of truth
00:14:54 --> 00:14:54 who goes out
00:14:54 --> 00:14:55 from the father
00:14:55 --> 00:14:56 he will testify
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 about me
00:14:57 --> 00:14:58 and you also
00:14:58 --> 00:15:00 must testify
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 for you have been
00:15:01 --> 00:15:02 with me from the
00:15:02 --> 00:15:02 beginning
00:15:02 --> 00:15:05 the thing that is
00:15:05 --> 00:15:05 making them
00:15:05 --> 00:15:06 persecuted
00:15:06 --> 00:15:07 is the message
00:15:07 --> 00:15:07 that they are
00:15:07 --> 00:15:08 bringing about
