00:00:01 --> 00:00:04 As Nick has said, we're kicking off our annual vision series today.
00:00:05 --> 00:00:08 This one is, in my view, particularly special
00:00:08 --> 00:00:13 because it's the final one for Follow 25.
00:00:13 --> 00:00:16 Follow 25, if you're relatively new around here,
00:00:17 --> 00:00:20 is our five-year strategic plan
00:00:20 --> 00:00:23 that was launched four years ago
00:00:23 --> 00:00:28 to see the majority of us at St Paul's
00:00:28 --> 00:00:30 growing in faith, growing in God confidence.
00:00:31 --> 00:00:35 And over the past five years or four years,
00:00:36 --> 00:00:40 we have learnt quite a lot
00:00:40 --> 00:00:45 in terms of what does that look like in our day and age.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:47 And so this vision series,
00:00:48 --> 00:00:51 we're going to build on that work
00:00:51 --> 00:00:53 by digging a bit deeper
00:00:53 --> 00:00:57 into how we follow Jesus here at St Paul's
00:00:57 --> 00:00:59 in this season, 21st century,
00:01:00 --> 00:01:02 as we live out our purpose
00:01:02 --> 00:01:05 of treasuring Jesus together for the joy of all people,
00:01:05 --> 00:01:07 which is our purpose statement.
00:01:07 --> 00:01:10 It's our statement which tries to capture, if you like,
00:01:10 --> 00:01:15 both the great commandment and the great commission.
00:01:15 --> 00:01:18 That is, the great commandment to love God and love people
00:01:18 --> 00:01:21 and to make disciples of all nations.
00:01:21 --> 00:01:24 So, you know, worship God, love each other,
00:01:24 --> 00:01:25 and serve the world.
00:01:26 --> 00:01:29 That's really what the three things
00:01:29 --> 00:01:31 that we're on about here at St Paul's.
00:01:31 --> 00:01:34 And so as we do that in our vision series,
00:01:34 --> 00:01:38 we are planning to take our collective next step
00:01:38 --> 00:01:44 to see lives flourish in Jesus in our city.
00:01:44 --> 00:01:45 And the key to that,
00:01:46 --> 00:01:48 which we want to get down to the nitty-gritty
00:01:48 --> 00:01:49 through this vision series,
00:01:49 --> 00:01:52 that for us to see lives flourishing
00:01:52 --> 00:01:55 and for us to collectively take our next step,
00:01:56 --> 00:01:59 we individually need to be intentionally
00:01:59 --> 00:02:02 taking our next step to grow as disciples of Jesus.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:06 So the thrust of what I am calling us to
00:02:06 --> 00:02:08 over the course of this term
00:02:08 --> 00:02:13 is to intentionally practice rhythms of grace,
00:02:14 --> 00:02:16 what have been called godly habits,
00:02:16 --> 00:02:20 spiritual disciplines over the centuries.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:22 And this is a need for all of us.
00:02:23 --> 00:02:26 None of us have got any of this right.
00:02:27 --> 00:02:29 Some of us are stuck in a rut
00:02:29 --> 00:02:32 and happy to be there.
00:02:33 --> 00:02:36 Some of us don't even realise we're stuck in a rut.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:40 So my call throughout this series
00:02:40 --> 00:02:44 will be for us to intentionally follow Jesus
00:02:44 --> 00:02:50 and to fulfil his purpose for us in life.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:52 And that is that we would be transformed
00:02:52 --> 00:02:55 into his image day by day.
00:02:55 --> 00:03:02 Now, this is my 15th vision series at St Paul's.
00:03:02 --> 00:03:05 It's been my privilege and my honour
00:03:05 --> 00:03:10 to lead St Paul's for almost 16 years now.
00:03:10 --> 00:03:11 It'll be coming up real soon.
00:03:11 --> 00:03:12 The Ad of Mercy for that.
00:03:13 --> 00:03:15 You're not marking it.
00:03:15 --> 00:03:16 It's in my calendar.
00:03:16 --> 00:03:23 I am so, so personally confident
00:03:23 --> 00:03:26 that pursuing intentional Jesus,
00:03:26 --> 00:03:30 intentional discipleship in Jesus Christ
00:03:30 --> 00:03:33 is so absolutely right
00:03:33 --> 00:03:35 in terms of what God has called us to.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:38 It is my strong conviction
00:03:38 --> 00:03:40 after nearly three decades of pastoral ministry
00:03:40 --> 00:03:44 that treasuring Jesus above everything else
00:03:44 --> 00:03:47 is what we all need
00:03:47 --> 00:03:51 and to do it in every aspect of life
00:03:51 --> 00:03:52 to him to be,
00:03:52 --> 00:03:55 for us to fully surrender to him
00:03:55 --> 00:03:58 is what every one of us needs to do
00:03:58 --> 00:03:59 and yet it's the thing
00:03:59 --> 00:04:04 that is often lacking in Western Christianity.
00:04:04 --> 00:04:08 You may or may not remember
00:04:08 --> 00:04:11 but back when I launched Follow 25,
00:04:11 --> 00:04:12 my personal commitment
00:04:12 --> 00:04:14 was that I was going to read
00:04:14 --> 00:04:16 the Old Testament once
00:04:16 --> 00:04:18 and Psalms and New Testament twice
00:04:18 --> 00:04:20 every year
00:04:20 --> 00:04:22 for the course of Follow 25
00:04:22 --> 00:04:24 and so far I've been on track
00:04:24 --> 00:04:25 for the past four years
00:04:25 --> 00:04:28 and it's become more of a habit now
00:04:28 --> 00:04:31 and much easier to do
00:04:31 --> 00:04:34 after four years of slogging away at it.
00:04:34 --> 00:04:39 I'm glad I've done it.
00:04:40 --> 00:04:43 Over the past four years,
00:04:43 --> 00:04:45 in conjunction with that,
00:04:45 --> 00:04:49 I have faced many personal challenges
00:04:49 --> 00:04:52 that have forced me
00:04:52 --> 00:04:55 to go deeper in understanding myself
00:04:55 --> 00:05:02 of seeing areas that needed to be changed in my life
00:05:02 --> 00:05:04 and working on those areas.
00:05:04 --> 00:05:07 And I'm grateful for God and his spirit.
00:05:07 --> 00:05:10 I'm grateful for the community of saints
00:05:10 --> 00:05:13 who have assisted and walked with me
00:05:13 --> 00:05:14 and mentors and coaches
00:05:14 --> 00:05:16 who have helped me through that process.
00:05:17 --> 00:05:19 And so after four years
00:05:19 --> 00:05:22 of following Christ in this process,
00:05:22 --> 00:05:23 of Follow 25,
00:05:23 --> 00:05:26 I have seen change in my life.
00:05:26 --> 00:05:30 I feel more stable and content.
00:05:31 --> 00:05:33 I have more mystery in life,
00:05:33 --> 00:05:34 in the things of God.
00:05:34 --> 00:05:36 I feel like I'm more restful in him
00:05:36 --> 00:05:38 after four years of Follow 25.
00:05:38 --> 00:05:42 And yet,
00:05:42 --> 00:05:44 I come to this series
00:05:44 --> 00:05:46 very conscious.
00:05:48 --> 00:05:50 After walking with Jesus
00:05:50 --> 00:05:52 for over three decades,
00:05:53 --> 00:05:55 I struggle day by day
00:05:55 --> 00:05:57 to live out the life of discipleship.
00:05:57 --> 00:06:00 I am like you,
00:06:00 --> 00:06:04 a sheep before I am a shepherd.
00:06:07 --> 00:06:10 I'm conscious of the setbacks.
00:06:10 --> 00:06:11 I'm conscious of the apathy
00:06:11 --> 00:06:14 and the battle in my life to change.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:18 And after 16 years of leading St. Paul's,
00:06:19 --> 00:06:20 for those who've been around
00:06:20 --> 00:06:22 the whole time of that,
00:06:22 --> 00:06:23 you know that.
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 You can see straight through me.
00:06:28 --> 00:06:30 That's the difficulty of standing up here
00:06:30 --> 00:06:32 almost week after week after week.
00:06:32 --> 00:06:35 I feel exposed and vulnerable
00:06:35 --> 00:06:38 as I call us to surrender everything to Jesus.
00:06:42 --> 00:06:43 I am a sheep like you
00:06:43 --> 00:06:46 and I struggle to do that too.
00:06:48 --> 00:06:49 I can bring it to you
00:06:49 --> 00:06:52 with an element of sharpness
00:06:52 --> 00:06:53 and clarity and humour
00:06:53 --> 00:06:55 and conviction
00:06:55 --> 00:06:59 and yet struggle to do it myself.
00:06:59 --> 00:07:01 I'm a flawed saint
00:07:01 --> 00:07:04 journeying with you.
00:07:06 --> 00:07:07 For instance,
00:07:07 --> 00:07:10 I need to crucify the love
00:07:10 --> 00:07:12 of praise and affirmation
00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 every day.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:17 I have to crucify the desire
00:07:17 --> 00:07:19 to make a name for myself
00:07:19 --> 00:07:21 rather than a name for Christ.
00:07:23 --> 00:07:25 I am drawn to security
00:07:25 --> 00:07:27 and comfort and possessions.
00:07:29 --> 00:07:31 I struggle with some of the fears
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 at 55
00:07:32 --> 00:07:36 that I struggled with at 15
00:07:36 --> 00:07:38 and I'm frustrated
00:07:38 --> 00:07:41 by the lack of change in those areas,
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 the fear of rejection.
00:07:42 --> 00:07:42 The fear of rejection.
00:07:43 --> 00:07:46 The fear of looking foolish.
00:07:47 --> 00:07:50 I have battled personal insecurity,
00:07:51 --> 00:07:53 identity and social anxiety
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 all of my life.
00:07:54 --> 00:07:58 I am prone to self-pity.
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 I feel it quickly
00:08:01 --> 00:08:03 if I don't get the love
00:08:03 --> 00:08:04 and the respect
00:08:04 --> 00:08:05 the way that I want to.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:08 I'm a lover of progress
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 and productivity
00:08:09 --> 00:08:12 and so I constantly battle
00:08:12 --> 00:08:17 the guilt around the use of my time.
00:08:17 --> 00:08:20 procrastination is one thing
00:08:20 --> 00:08:23 that I hate about myself.
00:08:25 --> 00:08:27 I'm generally quick
00:08:27 --> 00:08:29 on critical analysis
00:08:29 --> 00:08:30 and problem solving
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 and decision making
00:08:31 --> 00:08:33 and slower
00:08:33 --> 00:08:35 on listening and compassion.
00:08:35 --> 00:08:38 I love to praise God
00:08:38 --> 00:08:38 with you
00:08:38 --> 00:08:40 in this setting
00:08:40 --> 00:08:43 and I'm very conscious
00:08:43 --> 00:08:46 that I feel a constraint
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 in my own soul
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 when it's just me and God.
00:08:50 --> 00:08:52 I constantly question
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 the motives of my heart
00:08:53 --> 00:08:56 and so I question
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 the motives of yours
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 and others too.
00:08:59 --> 00:09:01 I've loved my wife
00:09:01 --> 00:09:03 imperfectly for 26 years.
00:09:03 --> 00:09:06 and my children
00:09:06 --> 00:09:08 imperfectly for 17 years.
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 I want to know God.
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 I want to know myself
00:09:15 --> 00:09:18 and I want to see the gap
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 and the difference
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 between who I am
00:09:20 --> 00:09:22 and what he's called me to.
00:09:24 --> 00:09:26 And so I say all of that
00:09:26 --> 00:09:29 and have it included everything
00:09:29 --> 00:09:33 just simply to say
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 I'm with you
00:09:34 --> 00:09:36 and I invite you
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 to take your next step
00:09:37 --> 00:09:37 with me.
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 In the embrace
00:09:41 --> 00:09:43 of our Saviour
00:09:43 --> 00:09:45 who knows us
00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 Saviour who is gentle
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 and humble
00:09:48 --> 00:09:50 and tender
00:09:50 --> 00:09:53 towards flawed saints
00:09:53 --> 00:09:53 like me
00:09:53 --> 00:09:55 and you
00:09:55 --> 00:09:59 as we are made more
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 in his image this year.
00:10:00 --> 00:10:03 so you will hear
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 tenderness
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 in this series
00:10:05 --> 00:10:08 but you will also hear
00:10:08 --> 00:10:10 or feel
00:10:10 --> 00:10:13 some boots up the backside.
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 It's in the context
00:10:16 --> 00:10:18 of a tender boot
00:10:18 --> 00:10:20 if you like
00:10:20 --> 00:10:24 because after 16 years
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 of leading St Paul's
00:10:25 --> 00:10:28 I can say
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 that some of us
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 here have not even
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 moved to scratch.
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 I can say
00:10:35 --> 00:10:35 in reflecting
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 in 16 years
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 there's been
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 no change
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 in some people
00:10:39 --> 00:10:39 at St Paul's
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 in 16 years.
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 Your value systems
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 are still the same
00:10:44 --> 00:10:46 your habits
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 are still the same
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 your priorities
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 are still the same.
00:10:49 --> 00:10:51 in fact
00:10:51 --> 00:10:51 for some of us here
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 I'm actually
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 seeing it get worse.
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 I'm seeing a decline
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 in discipleship.
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 There may be
00:11:00 --> 00:11:00 a growth in
00:11:00 --> 00:11:02 knowledge
00:11:02 --> 00:11:05 but don't make
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 the mistake
00:11:06 --> 00:11:06 that a growth
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 in knowledge
00:11:07 --> 00:11:07 means transformation.
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 That's the mistake
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 of Western society.
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 And so
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 I invite you
00:11:15 --> 00:11:17 to come on this
00:11:17 --> 00:11:17 journey
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 and take your
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 next step.

00:13:16 --> 00:13:16 of his

00:28:47 --> 00:28:47 culture you
00:28:47 --> 00:28:48 come from,
00:28:48 --> 00:28:49 it says
00:28:49 --> 00:28:49 exactly the
00:28:49 --> 00:28:50 same things.
00:28:51 --> 00:28:53 Your sense
00:28:53 --> 00:28:55 of self, of
00:28:55 --> 00:28:56 who you
00:28:56 --> 00:28:58 are, your
00:28:58 --> 00:29:00 identity is
00:29:00 --> 00:29:00 performance
00:29:00 --> 00:29:01 based.
00:29:03 --> 00:29:04 You achieve
00:29:04 --> 00:29:05 your identity.
00:29:06 --> 00:29:07 and if you
00:29:07 --> 00:29:08 perform well
00:29:08 --> 00:29:10 enough, you

00:29:12 --> 00:29:13 approval you
