Final Rest

00:00:07 --> 00:00:10 If you've just joined us, we've been working our way through this book of Esther,
00:00:13 --> 00:00:14 !
00:00:14 --> 00:00:20 particularly realising that it's not just some kind of Cinderella story of some poor orphan Jewish girl
00:00:20 --> 00:00:23 who rises to greatness, become the Queen of Persia,
00:00:23 --> 00:00:29 but ultimately it's a story about how God brings salvation to his people
00:00:29 --> 00:00:37 through silently but sovereignly working through ordinary circumstances of life.
00:00:38 --> 00:00:40 And we come to the end of it today.
00:00:40 --> 00:00:46 So if you've got the Sir Paul's app, you'll see an outline for today's message, three points there.
00:00:46 --> 00:00:52 And we're kicking off with the temporary victory of Esther.
00:00:53 --> 00:00:56 So having, well, just to sort of summarise where we've been,
00:00:56 --> 00:01:04 King Xerxes was convinced by the narcissistic Haman, who was chief of his administration,
00:01:04 --> 00:01:13 to issue a decree to the whole entire Persian empire to kill, destroy and annihilate the Jews,
00:01:14 --> 00:01:18 something that Haman himself obviously didn't like the Jews very much.
00:01:18 --> 00:01:26 And so last time we met, what we got there was the first stages of glimpses, if you like,
00:01:27 --> 00:01:29 of a reversal of fortune in chapter 6,
00:01:30 --> 00:01:36 when Xerxes publicly honours Esther's cousin Mordecai,
00:01:36 --> 00:01:39 the person who Haman hated the most,
00:01:40 --> 00:01:47 publicly honours him just in the nick of time before Haman murders him.
00:01:47 --> 00:01:57 And that moment there marked the reversal of fortunes and the swift downfall of Haman.
00:02:00 --> 00:02:07 Haman was very soon, from that moment, he was executed on the stake that he himself had built
00:02:07 --> 00:02:11 in order to impale Mordecai.
00:02:11 --> 00:02:20 And so with Haman's downfall, Mordecai rises to Haman's place of power.
00:02:21 --> 00:02:29 And so with Xerxes' original edict to annihilate the Jews, gone out into the empire,
00:02:29 --> 00:02:34 and as we've just read, it cannot be reversed, it cannot be repealed.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:42 Instead, what now happens is a counter-edict is drawn up,
00:02:42 --> 00:02:46 allowing the Jews to defend themselves when they are now attacked.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:55 What that means is, without this edict, the Jews would have been breaking the law
00:02:55 --> 00:02:58 if they attempted to defend themselves in any way.
00:03:01 --> 00:03:07 And the edict, we read, means that not only can they defend themselves,
00:03:07 --> 00:03:09 but anyone who attacks them,
00:03:09 --> 00:03:14 they can now take possession of all of their property.
00:03:16 --> 00:03:19 Now, you would expect that this counter-edict
00:03:19 --> 00:03:21 would have put the whole thing to rest,
00:03:21 --> 00:03:22 and people would have gone,
00:03:22 --> 00:03:24 OK, look, you know, deal's off.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:27 Let's just go home and rethink this.
00:03:28 --> 00:03:29 You'd think it'd be over, but it wasn't.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:31 Not in any sense.
00:03:32 --> 00:03:34 In fact, quite a number were willing to carry through
00:03:34 --> 00:03:38 with the original edict, even in the citadel,
00:03:38 --> 00:03:42 which we might remember from the very first message.
00:03:42 --> 00:03:45 The citadel is the seat of power and influence.
00:03:45 --> 00:03:47 Even there in the palace,
00:03:48 --> 00:03:52 there are more than 500 who wanted to kill the Jews.
00:03:54 --> 00:03:57 Verse 16 says that at the end of the day,
00:03:57 --> 00:03:59 75 were killed.
00:03:59 --> 00:04:05 75 attacked the Jews on that day
00:04:05 --> 00:04:08 in order to kill and annihilate them.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:16 And the only ones named of those 75
00:04:16 --> 00:04:18 are the, well done, Anne,
00:04:20 --> 00:04:24 the Haman's sons with names you just can't pronounce.
00:04:27 --> 00:04:28 Why?
00:04:28 --> 00:04:30 Why name his 10 sons?
00:04:33 --> 00:04:35 I think for one really important reason.
00:04:35 --> 00:04:38 There's a couple, but I'll give you one important reason.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:40 At the end of chapter 5,
00:04:41 --> 00:04:44 when Haman's ego was bruised by Mordecai
00:04:44 --> 00:04:47 because Mordecai would not bow down and honour him
00:04:47 --> 00:04:49 as he thought that he should be doing,
00:04:50 --> 00:04:53 he goes home, gathers all of his friends and his family
00:04:53 --> 00:04:54 and has a boast fest.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:59 He boasted about three things in chapter 5
00:04:59 --> 00:05:04 to reveal that he was a man worthy to be honoured.
00:05:05 --> 00:05:07 He boasted about his power,
00:05:08 --> 00:05:10 he boasted about his wealth
00:05:10 --> 00:05:12 and he boasted about his sons,
00:05:12 --> 00:05:17 which is another way of boasting about his legacy
00:05:17 --> 00:05:20 and about his name going on beyond him.
00:05:20 --> 00:05:24 And in chapter 7,
00:05:24 --> 00:05:28 we see the reversal happening.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:31 His position is taken away from him
00:05:31 --> 00:05:34 and given to Mordecai in chapter 8.
00:05:35 --> 00:05:38 In chapter 8, his wealth is taken away from him
00:05:38 --> 00:05:40 and as we just read, given to Esther.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:46 And now his sons, following through with their father's plan
00:05:46 --> 00:05:47 to annihilate the Jews,
00:05:48 --> 00:05:50 his sons are now taken away from him.
00:05:50 --> 00:05:53 In other words, his name is no longer.
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 His name, his heritage is over.
00:05:56 --> 00:05:57 He is finished.
00:05:57 --> 00:05:58 His legacy is done.
00:06:00 --> 00:06:02 The great reversal of Haman,
00:06:03 --> 00:06:05 who set himself up against God's people,
00:06:06 --> 00:06:07 is now complete.
00:06:07 --> 00:06:13 Every basis of his boasting has now been removed.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:17 All that he built his life on,
00:06:17 --> 00:06:21 all that his ego, that pumped up his ego, is gone.
00:06:22 --> 00:06:24 The one who boasted,
00:06:24 --> 00:06:28 the one who profoundly proud in heart
00:06:28 --> 00:06:33 has now been deeply and completely, totally humbled.
00:06:33 --> 00:06:40 Regardless, having said all of that,
00:06:41 --> 00:06:45 in the sense that there is a sense of poetic justice here,
00:06:46 --> 00:06:49 regardless of that, in this narrative,
00:06:49 --> 00:06:54 many in our society struggle with the Bible
00:06:54 --> 00:06:59 portraying God's people like this,
00:06:59 --> 00:07:01 executing judgment on others.
00:07:01 --> 00:07:06 Our citizens of modern Western civilization
00:07:06 --> 00:07:10 are a product of a culture
00:07:10 --> 00:07:17 that has normalized unconditional self-acceptance.
00:07:19 --> 00:07:22 That is our normal response,
00:07:23 --> 00:07:25 unconditional self-acceptance.
00:07:25 --> 00:07:30 And so, because we are drilled into us
00:07:30 --> 00:07:31 from a very young age,
00:07:31 --> 00:07:34 that we must accept ourself,
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 who we are.
00:07:37 --> 00:07:40 And it's the dominant theme of self-acceptance.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:44 When it comes to hearing about God's acceptance of us,
00:07:44 --> 00:07:46 that's not so amazing.
00:07:48 --> 00:07:50 What else would we expect God to do?
00:07:50 --> 00:07:53 That's his job.
00:07:53 --> 00:07:56 His job is to accept me as I have accepted me.
00:07:58 --> 00:08:00 In fact, the idea of grace
00:08:00 --> 00:08:05 in Western civilization is not so amazing.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 It's God's job.
00:08:09 --> 00:08:11 That's what we expect him to do,
00:08:11 --> 00:08:14 to accept me as I have accepted me.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:18 And yet, in our same culture,
00:08:18 --> 00:08:21 the idea that God would stand in judgment of humanity
00:08:21 --> 00:08:24 and demand from us repentance
00:08:24 --> 00:08:27 or obedience of any form at all,
00:08:28 --> 00:08:31 and the idea that he will finally condemn
00:08:31 --> 00:08:34 all those who proudly reject him
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 and set themselves up against him,
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 as we have a glimpse here of Haman,
00:08:37 --> 00:08:44 that concept is shockingly counterintuitive to us,
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 deeply perplexing.
00:08:47 --> 00:08:49 How can God,
00:08:49 --> 00:08:51 who we have created in our own image,
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 a God of love,
00:08:52 --> 00:08:54 also hold us accountable?
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 That is perplexing.
00:08:59 --> 00:08:59 And so, therefore,
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 in our civilization,
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 our society,
00:09:03 --> 00:09:06 there are some aspects of the Christian faith
00:09:06 --> 00:09:08 which we want to go,
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 that's absolutely right, of course,
00:09:10 --> 00:09:14 because it agrees with our worldview,
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 but there are others,
00:09:16 --> 00:09:18 aspects of the Christian faith
00:09:18 --> 00:09:20 that we think are fundamentally dangerous
00:09:20 --> 00:09:22 and we would despise
00:09:22 --> 00:09:25 because it sets itself up against our worldview.
00:09:27 --> 00:09:29 The bigger picture here
00:09:29 --> 00:09:30 that's happening here
00:09:30 --> 00:09:33 is that God's anger at his enemy
00:09:33 --> 00:09:38 is not some kind of cranky explosion.
00:09:39 --> 00:09:42 It's not an act of revenge.
00:09:43 --> 00:09:46 God's acts of justice and retribution
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 in the Bible
00:09:47 --> 00:09:50 are his settled opposition
00:09:50 --> 00:09:52 to the cancer
00:09:52 --> 00:09:55 which is eating out the insides of humanity,
00:09:56 --> 00:09:58 the cancer of sin,
00:09:58 --> 00:10:01 a humanity that is created
00:10:01 --> 00:10:03 in his image
00:10:03 --> 00:10:05 to enjoy relationship with him,
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 a humanity that he loves
00:10:07 --> 00:10:10 with his whole being.
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 And the Bible says
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 that God's anger
00:10:13 --> 00:10:15 flows from his love
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 and his delight
00:10:16 --> 00:10:18 in that which he has created
00:10:18 --> 00:10:20 to be enjoyed.
00:10:22 --> 00:10:25 He is angry at evil
00:10:25 --> 00:10:25 and injustice.
00:10:25 --> 00:10:28 He is angry
00:10:28 --> 00:10:30 at the pride of humanity
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 that sets itself up against him
00:10:31 --> 00:10:34 because it is destroying
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 the peace
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 and the integrity
00:10:36 --> 00:10:38 of what he has made.
00:10:40 --> 00:10:42 God's punishment of evil
00:10:42 --> 00:10:44 is not an overreach.
00:10:46 --> 00:10:48 It is certainly shocking
00:10:48 --> 00:10:51 and it is certainly terrifying.
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 That's what images of this
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 like Esther
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 is meant to,
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 the conclusion
00:10:57 --> 00:10:59 is meant us to be.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:03 It is his justice.
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 In that sense,
00:11:06 --> 00:11:08 the punishment fits the crime
00:11:08 --> 00:11:10 and it's the kind of justice
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 that we want to live for,
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 we want in society.
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 We want,
00:11:15 --> 00:11:17 if someone does wrong to me,
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 we want wrong
00:11:18 --> 00:11:20 to be done to them.
00:11:20 --> 00:11:22 We want justice
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 in that moment.
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 We want the punishment
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 to fit the crime.
00:11:28 --> 00:11:29 And so the Bible
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 clearly declares
00:11:30 --> 00:11:32 that those who proudly
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 set themselves up
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 against God
00:11:34 --> 00:11:34 in life
00:11:34 --> 00:11:37 will be brought low.
00:11:40 --> 00:11:42 They will be humbled.
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 They will be held accountable.
00:11:45 --> 00:11:47 They will be punished.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:51 But notice something else
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 in this text.
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 A couple of times
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 in these verses,
00:11:55 --> 00:11:57 we are told very clearly
00:11:57 --> 00:11:59 that the wealth,
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 the Jews did not take
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 the wealth
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 of their attackers.
00:12:04 --> 00:12:06 Even though Xerxes' edict,
00:12:07 --> 00:12:07 the law,
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 said that they could.
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 As they acted
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 in self-defence,
00:12:13 --> 00:12:13 they were allowed
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 to take the plunder
00:12:14 --> 00:12:16 of those who attacked them.
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 but they didn't.
00:12:19 --> 00:12:19 Emphatically,
00:12:20 --> 00:12:20 three times,
00:12:21 --> 00:12:22 they didn't.
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 In other words,
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 the bloodshed
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 that we read of here
00:12:26 --> 00:12:28 was an act
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 of self-defence
00:12:29 --> 00:12:31 against tens
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 of thousands
00:12:32 --> 00:12:32 of people
00:12:32 --> 00:12:34 who wanted them dead
00:12:34 --> 00:12:36 for no reason
00:12:36 --> 00:12:38 than their race,
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 than their culture,
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 or their religion.
00:12:42 --> 00:12:44 For no other reason
00:12:44 --> 00:12:45 than that.
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 In other words,
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 this is not,
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 what we are reading here
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 is not an act
00:12:51 --> 00:12:53 of imperial action
00:12:53 --> 00:12:54 by which they were
00:12:54 --> 00:12:56 enriching themselves
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 and increasing
00:12:57 --> 00:12:57 their power.
00:12:57 --> 00:13:01 we are told
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 several times
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 they needed
00:13:03 --> 00:13:03 relief
00:13:03 --> 00:13:05 from their enemies
00:13:05 --> 00:13:06 who were seeking
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 to annihilate them.
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 And chapter 9,
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 verse 17
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 tells us
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 that that relief
00:13:15 --> 00:13:15 from their enemies
00:13:15 --> 00:13:17 is exactly what they got.
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 They rested
00:13:19 --> 00:13:19 and made it
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 a day
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 of feasting
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 and joy.
00:13:22 --> 00:13:24 And this particular day
00:13:24 --> 00:13:26 became an annual day
00:13:26 --> 00:13:29 of celebration
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 for,
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 of salvation
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 and rescue
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 and rest from enemies
00:13:33 --> 00:13:35 for the Jewish nation.
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 However,
00:13:37 --> 00:13:37 let me just say
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 as we get to there,
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 this is nothing new.
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 What we're experiencing
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 here at the end of Esther,
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 this is nothing new
00:13:45 --> 00:13:47 for God's historic people
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 in the Old Testament.
00:13:48 --> 00:13:50 They have a track record
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 of leaders
00:13:51 --> 00:13:53 who give them rest
00:13:53 --> 00:13:55 temporarily.
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 Moses gave it to them
00:13:57 --> 00:13:58 for a little while.
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 Joshua gave it to them
00:14:00 --> 00:14:00 for a little while.
00:14:00 --> 00:14:01 Then there's the judges
00:14:01 --> 00:14:02 and there's David
00:14:02 --> 00:14:03 and then there's Solomon
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 and now Esther.
00:14:04 --> 00:14:06 There's relief
00:14:06 --> 00:14:08 but it doesn't last.
00:14:09 --> 00:14:10 It's temporary.
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 And we even see it here
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 because tacked on the end
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 of this book
00:14:15 --> 00:14:17 rather awkwardly
00:14:17 --> 00:14:19 is this little postscript
00:14:19 --> 00:14:22 in Esther chapter 10.
00:14:25 --> 00:14:27 King Xerxes imposed tribute
00:14:27 --> 00:14:28 throughout the empire
00:14:28 --> 00:14:30 to its distant shores
00:14:30 --> 00:14:32 and all his acts
00:14:32 --> 00:14:33 of power and might
00:14:33 --> 00:14:35 together with a full account
00:14:35 --> 00:14:37 of the greatness of Mordecai
00:14:37 --> 00:14:39 whom the king
00:14:39 --> 00:14:41 had promoted.
00:14:41 --> 00:14:43 Now at first glance,
00:14:43 --> 00:14:44 you read those verses
00:14:44 --> 00:14:44 and you go,
00:14:45 --> 00:14:46 I mean, okay, great.
00:14:46 --> 00:14:47 You know, a little postscript.
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 What are they there for?
00:14:48 --> 00:14:51 However, in the context
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 of Esther
00:14:52 --> 00:14:54 and the great victory
00:14:54 --> 00:14:56 that means one here
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 for God's people
00:14:57 --> 00:14:59 against people
00:14:59 --> 00:15:00 who were seeking
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 to annihilate them,
00:15:02 --> 00:15:03 what these little verses
00:15:03 --> 00:15:04 show us
00:15:04 --> 00:15:05 is that nothing
00:15:05 --> 00:15:07 has actually changed
00:15:07 --> 00:15:07 at all.
00:15:09 --> 00:15:10 Xerxes,
00:15:10 --> 00:15:15 the ruler of Persia,
00:15:16 --> 00:15:16 the kingdom
00:15:16 --> 00:15:17 that is oppressing
00:15:17 --> 00:15:18 God's people
00:15:18 --> 00:15:20 is still king.
00:15:22 --> 00:15:24 And his personal interests
00:15:24 --> 00:15:26 remain paramount
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 regardless
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 of the cost
00:15:28 --> 00:15:29 of his subjects.
00:15:29 --> 00:15:33 At least 75
00:15:33 --> 00:15:34 of his subjects
00:15:34 --> 00:15:35 have just died
00:15:35 --> 00:15:38 and it says here
00:15:38 --> 00:15:40 that he imposed tribute
00:15:40 --> 00:15:42 throughout the empire.
00:15:43 --> 00:15:44 He didn't,
00:15:44 --> 00:15:45 there's no day of mourning.
00:15:48 --> 00:15:49 A tribute
00:15:49 --> 00:15:52 is either a new tax
00:15:52 --> 00:15:55 or it's constricting
00:15:55 --> 00:15:55 people
00:15:55 --> 00:15:57 into forced labour.
00:15:57 --> 00:15:59 That's his response.
00:16:01 --> 00:16:02 God's people
00:16:02 --> 00:16:03 have received
00:16:03 --> 00:16:04 rest
00:16:04 --> 00:16:04 from
00:16:04 --> 00:16:06 one enemy
00:16:06 --> 00:16:08 but they have yet
00:16:08 --> 00:16:09 to receive rest
00:16:09 --> 00:16:10 from Xerxes himself.
00:16:11 --> 00:16:12 And so their relief
00:16:12 --> 00:16:13 here
00:16:13 --> 00:16:14 is temporary
00:16:14 --> 00:16:15 and it is fragile
00:16:15 --> 00:16:17 as the next day
00:16:17 --> 00:16:18 they start paying
00:16:18 --> 00:16:19 more taxes
00:16:19 --> 00:16:20 and they start
00:16:20 --> 00:16:21 getting back
00:16:21 --> 00:16:22 into slave labour.
00:16:25 --> 00:16:27 And so it's
00:16:27 --> 00:16:28 during this time
00:16:28 --> 00:16:29 in the history
00:16:29 --> 00:16:31 of God's people
00:16:31 --> 00:16:32 that the
00:16:32 --> 00:16:33 latter prophets
00:16:33 --> 00:16:34 of the Old Testament
00:16:34 --> 00:16:36 began to prophesy
00:16:36 --> 00:16:37 that there will
00:16:37 --> 00:16:38 someday
00:16:38 --> 00:16:39 be a Messiah
00:16:39 --> 00:16:41 and a Messiah
00:16:41 --> 00:16:42 who will come
00:16:42 --> 00:16:44 and this Messiah
00:16:44 --> 00:16:44 will provide
00:16:44 --> 00:16:46 for them
00:16:46 --> 00:16:48 ultimate rest.
00:16:48 --> 00:16:49 a final rest
00:16:49 --> 00:16:51 a final peace.
00:16:52 --> 00:16:52 In fact
00:16:52 --> 00:16:53 Daniel chapter 7
00:16:53 --> 00:16:54 who writes
00:16:54 --> 00:16:55 during this time
00:16:55 --> 00:16:56 of exile
00:16:56 --> 00:16:58 talks about
00:16:58 --> 00:16:59 this one
00:16:59 --> 00:17:00 as being
00:17:00 --> 00:17:01 the son of man
00:17:01 --> 00:17:03 a powerful figure
00:17:03 --> 00:17:04 who will have
00:17:04 --> 00:17:05 great authority
00:17:05 --> 00:17:06 direct from God
00:17:06 --> 00:17:07 who will come
00:17:07 --> 00:17:08 and wage war
00:17:08 --> 00:17:10 against all evil
00:17:10 --> 00:17:11 all injustice
00:17:11 --> 00:17:12 and bring about
00:17:12 --> 00:17:14 the final rest
00:17:14 --> 00:17:15 of those
00:17:15 --> 00:17:15 who are God's people.
00:17:15 --> 00:17:19 and that final
00:17:19 --> 00:17:20 victory comes
00:17:20 --> 00:17:21 in the person
