00:00:00 --> 00:00:06 Well, royal scandals are everywhere on the pages of history.
00:00:07 --> 00:00:13 For millennia, people have plotted, seduced, bribed, battled, beheaded,
00:00:14 --> 00:00:19 and committed countless atrocities to either seize a throne
00:00:19 --> 00:00:24 or to increase their access or their influence over a throne.
00:00:24 --> 00:00:31 The greatest royal scandal these days is a young couple trying to get as far away as the throne as they possibly can.
00:00:32 --> 00:00:37 But in world history, it doesn't sort of rate as a royal scandal.
00:00:37 --> 00:00:42 I've never heard anywhere in the editorials about bringing back the chopping block
00:00:42 --> 00:00:46 or anything like that to do with a young Harry or Meghan.
00:00:47 --> 00:00:51 There have been many great royal scandals that have displayed the stupidity,
00:00:51 --> 00:00:55 the ineptitude, the selfishness, and the cruelty of leaders.
00:00:56 --> 00:00:58 Even in England, a number of them.
00:00:58 --> 00:01:01 We don't have to go very much far back than Henry VIII,
00:01:02 --> 00:01:04 woman in one hand and a leg of lamb in the other.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:09 But even you go into the history of Egypt,
00:01:09 --> 00:01:14 and again you come up with scandal after scandal of ineptitude,
00:01:15 --> 00:01:17 stupidity amongst the pharaohs.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:22 Pharaoh Pepe II, who oversaw the downfall of the sixth Egyptian dynasty,
00:01:23 --> 00:01:24 he was pretty much a weird one.
00:01:25 --> 00:01:28 He had many, many wives,
00:01:29 --> 00:01:31 all of whom were his sisters.
00:01:32 --> 00:01:37 That was creepy even in their day and their culture.
00:01:38 --> 00:01:40 And apart from loving his sisters,
00:01:41 --> 00:01:45 he is known for having some sort of weird fascination with pygmies
00:01:45 --> 00:01:48 and would search the world for pygmies
00:01:48 --> 00:01:52 and bring them back into the Egyptian empire,
00:01:52 --> 00:01:54 to his cities and his palaces.
00:01:54 --> 00:01:57 And he also loved his food like Henry VIII.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:03 He would work apparently only very briefly in any given day,
00:02:03 --> 00:02:06 but spend most of his days hosting feasts,
00:02:06 --> 00:02:08 one after another after another.
00:02:08 --> 00:02:12 The only thing he particularly hated about his feasts
00:02:12 --> 00:02:17 was the constant need for him to shoo the flies away.
00:02:18 --> 00:02:20 And so one thing that he decided to do,
00:02:21 --> 00:02:22 one of his solution,
00:02:22 --> 00:02:27 was to bring into his dining area a bunch of slaves,
00:02:27 --> 00:02:29 have them doused in honey,
00:02:30 --> 00:02:32 and get them to serve the food
00:02:32 --> 00:02:35 and to stand to one side in order to draw all the insects.
00:02:35 --> 00:02:40 Sort of like a living, breathing fly trap, if you like.
00:02:41 --> 00:02:44 Now, like many before him and after him,
00:02:44 --> 00:02:48 Pepe II oppressed others for his own glory and freedom.
00:02:48 --> 00:02:51 And we see it again as we open up
00:02:51 --> 00:02:54 the first two chapters of Exodus.
00:02:56 --> 00:02:59 Again, jumping into the Egyptian empire,
00:02:59 --> 00:03:06 but a terrifying situation of royalty behaving badly again,
00:03:06 --> 00:03:09 but in this case, terrifyingly so.
00:03:10 --> 00:03:11 This is a story,
00:03:12 --> 00:03:15 Exodus is a story of salvation,
00:03:16 --> 00:03:17 salvation from slavery.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:19 So if you've got the St. Paul's app,
00:03:19 --> 00:03:20 it'd be great if you could open that up.
00:03:21 --> 00:03:22 And I've got three points there.
00:03:22 --> 00:03:25 I want to run through today as we launch into this series.
00:03:26 --> 00:03:28 Three things I want to say in the first two chapters.
00:03:28 --> 00:03:31 The promise of salvation.
00:03:31 --> 00:03:33 First of all, three principles of salvation.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:36 And lastly, the person of salvation.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:38 So firstly, the promise of salvation.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:43 Now, the book of Exodus begins with the word and.
00:03:45 --> 00:03:50 It's missing in virtually every English translation.
00:03:50 --> 00:04:00 But the word and immediately alerts us to the fact that this book is part of a much bigger story.
00:04:02 --> 00:04:05 Exodus flows straight on where Genesis left off.
00:04:06 --> 00:04:11 In fact, the last three verses of Genesis give us a really strong hint
00:04:11 --> 00:04:15 that there is a sequel coming to this movie.
00:04:15 --> 00:04:16 It says,
00:04:16 --> 00:04:27 Weird, because they weren't needing it in that moment.
00:04:28 --> 00:04:35 We'll come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
00:04:35 --> 00:04:41 And Joseph made the Israelites swear an oath and said, God will surely come to your aid.
00:04:41 --> 00:04:45 And then you must carry my bones up from this place.
00:04:46 --> 00:04:48 So Joseph died at the age of 110.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:54 And after they embalmed him, he was placed in a coffin in Egypt.
00:04:54 --> 00:05:01 So the unfolding story of Genesis is the background to Exodus.
00:05:01 --> 00:05:12 And more specifically, as highlighted there, is that the promises of God to Abraham are the background to these opening chapters.
00:05:12 --> 00:05:17 In Genesis 12, 15 and 17, God made a promise to Abraham, just an ordinary bloke.
00:05:17 --> 00:05:25 A man that he called out of idolatry to know him, to obey him and to follow him.
00:05:25 --> 00:05:29 It's a promise God sealed with a covenant with Abraham.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:33 A covenant is a binding agreement between two parties.
00:05:34 --> 00:05:40 And there are two elements to this binding agreement to God's promise.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:43 The first was the promise of a people.
00:05:43 --> 00:05:49 Abraham, we are told from God, Abraham is told that he would become a great nation.
00:05:51 --> 00:05:57 Leave your family, go and you will become a great nation.
00:05:57 --> 00:05:59 And the second was the promise of a land.
00:05:59 --> 00:06:03 Abraham's family would inherit the land of Canaan as their home.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:13 And above all, God promised to Abraham that a descendant from Abraham would in fact be the savior.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:18 The one who would defeat evil and rescue his people.
00:06:19 --> 00:06:26 And 400 years before Exodus chapter 1, that promise was under threat.
00:06:26 --> 00:06:33 A famine looked like it would in fact wipe out Abraham's family.
00:06:34 --> 00:06:38 God, however, rescued his people through a descendant of Abraham.
00:06:39 --> 00:06:48 A man named Joseph who rose up from slavery and imprisonment to become sort of like the prime minister of Egypt.
00:06:48 --> 00:06:57 Through Joseph's leadership, all the nations were blessed and saved from starvation.
00:06:58 --> 00:07:03 In those desperate times, Joseph's whole family settled in Egypt.
00:07:04 --> 00:07:09 And so the promise of God was secure for a time.
00:07:09 --> 00:07:22 Four centuries later, at the beginning of Exodus, God promised his promise of establishing a nation for himself is gradually being fulfilled.
00:07:23 --> 00:07:27 The first five verses list the sons of Israel who came to Egypt.
00:07:27 --> 00:07:33 The total number of Joseph's family who settled in Egypt was about 70.
00:07:33 --> 00:07:38 Now, 400 years later, they have become a great nation.
00:07:39 --> 00:07:45 As verse 6 and 7 indicate, they have multiplied greatly and have filled the lands.
00:07:47 --> 00:07:53 In fact, they've become so great, they are now resented and feared.
00:07:54 --> 00:08:01 So once again, the promise of God, his covenant to Abraham is under threat.
00:08:01 --> 00:08:07 As Pharaoh enslaves the Israelites and works them ruthlessly.
00:08:09 --> 00:08:19 So the book of Exodus is a story of God fulfilling his promise of liberation and salvation.
00:08:21 --> 00:08:25 Israel is rescued from slavery in Egypt.
00:08:25 --> 00:08:29 It's a rescue that points ultimately to a greater rescue.
00:08:29 --> 00:08:33 And we will see this again and again as we journey through Exodus.
00:08:33 --> 00:08:37 The liberation of God's people from slavery to sin.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:49 We are spending this term in Exodus because this story of salvation 3 years ago is our story of salvation.
00:08:49 --> 00:08:56 The Old Testament prophets promised a new Exodus.
00:08:56 --> 00:09:05 And the trajectory of Exodus right from the opening verses just points us, takes us to Jesus.
00:09:05 --> 00:09:30 This book is key to understanding the person and the work of Jesus Christ.
00:09:30 --> 00:09:36 It points us to him and inspires us to worship him.
00:09:40 --> 00:09:45 Secondly, Exodus 1 and 2 cover many decades of time.
00:09:45 --> 00:09:54 They give us the background, if you like, and they set up the liberation that will come in the chapters to follow.
00:09:55 --> 00:10:02 They also teach us in these first two chapters, they teach us some key principles of salvation.
00:10:02 --> 00:10:17 The first principle is that salvation is rescue from the misery and the slavery of serving anything in your life as more important than God.
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 Let me say that again.
00:10:21 --> 00:10:29 Salvation is rescue from the misery and the slavery of serving anything in your life as more important than God.
00:10:29 --> 00:10:34 Have a look at me at verses 13 and 14 in Exodus 1.
00:10:36 --> 00:10:39 The Egyptians came to dread the Israelites and work them ruthlessly.
00:10:40 --> 00:10:45 They made their lives bitter with harsh labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields.
00:10:45 --> 00:10:49 In all their harsh labor, the Egyptians worked them ruthlessly.
00:10:50 --> 00:10:55 Now basically, and I don't like doing this as a general rule, but I think this is helpful in this instance.
00:10:55 --> 00:11:03 Every English translation softens the original language in those verses.
00:11:03 --> 00:11:11 You can see that when I give you a more literal reading of those verses.
00:11:11 --> 00:11:13 Let me read it to you and I'll tell you why.
00:11:13 --> 00:11:15 It makes it obvious why they soften it.
00:11:16 --> 00:11:16 Right?
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 So here we go.
00:11:18 --> 00:11:40 The same Hebrew verb is used over and over.
00:11:40 --> 00:11:44 It's the word that means to serve.
00:11:44 --> 00:11:46 Serving as if you are serving a master.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:52 Israel is a forced servant of another.
00:11:54 --> 00:11:57 It's a deep and oppressive service.
00:12:00 --> 00:12:02 This is Israel's plight.
00:12:03 --> 00:12:09 Ignorant of her God, she serves another with great pain.
00:12:10 --> 00:12:16 Now one of the themes of the Bible, and it's here in Exodus,
00:12:17 --> 00:12:23 it is in knowing and serving God that we find blessing.
00:12:24 --> 00:12:29 We are freed from other oppressive masters.
00:12:29 --> 00:12:34 As Jesus said, you cannot serve two masters.
00:12:36 --> 00:12:40 And what he means by that is you can only serve one master.
00:12:43 --> 00:12:49 We are truly free when we are serving the right master.
00:12:49 --> 00:12:56 When Moses went to Pharaoh, let me just expand this point a little bit.
00:12:56 --> 00:12:59 When he went to Pharaoh a couple of chapters later than this,
00:13:00 --> 00:13:03 he did not say, let my people go.
00:13:05 --> 00:13:07 Now I know Charlton Heston said that in the movie,
00:13:08 --> 00:13:10 and I know we all want to believe that's what he said.
00:13:10 --> 00:13:13 He did not say, let my people go.
00:13:13 --> 00:13:21 He always said, let my people go that they may serve me,
00:13:22 --> 00:13:26 that they may worship me in the wilderness.
00:13:26 --> 00:13:33 That is, the book of Exodus doesn't end when Israel escapes through the sea
00:13:33 --> 00:13:36 and out of Egypt's clutches.
00:13:36 --> 00:13:40 There is a whole second section to this book,
00:13:41 --> 00:13:45 and most of us get bogged down in the second section of the book.
00:13:46 --> 00:13:48 Halfway through, we get bogged down at this point.
00:13:48 --> 00:13:53 The first half of Exodus is full of special effects.
00:13:53 --> 00:13:57 It's the exciting stuff, the miracles, the action, the power.
00:13:57 --> 00:13:59 It's the stuff we want to read through.
00:13:59 --> 00:14:04 The second half is page after page after page of instructions
00:14:04 --> 00:14:06 on how to build a tabernacle
00:14:06 --> 00:14:10 and what you're supposed to do when you build a tabernacle
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 and what goes on the doorposts
00:14:11 --> 00:14:13 and what the priests are meant to wear.
00:14:14 --> 00:14:16 It's the sort of stuff that, frankly,
00:14:16 --> 00:14:19 doesn't ever get into a movie about Exodus.
00:14:24 --> 00:14:27 But if you cut the second half of Exodus out,
00:14:29 --> 00:14:32 you don't include it in the movie of Exodus,
00:14:32 --> 00:14:35 you miss the entire teaching of the book.
00:14:36 --> 00:14:37 You miss the whole point.
00:14:40 --> 00:14:45 Exodus starts in slavery and it ends in worship.
00:14:47 --> 00:14:51 It starts in service, the word service,
00:14:52 --> 00:14:57 and it ends with the word service.
00:14:59 --> 00:15:04 which in English translations are translated slavery and worship.
00:15:05 --> 00:15:09 Service and service, the same word is used at the beginning and the end.
00:15:10 --> 00:15:13 You go from serving one to serving another.
00:15:15 --> 00:15:17 God's salvation means freedom,
00:15:17 --> 00:15:24 liberation to serve the only one whose service will never crush us.
00:15:24 --> 00:15:26 That's what liberation is.
00:15:26 --> 00:15:28 Now, when we hear that in the modern context,
00:15:29 --> 00:15:32 we interpret freedom very differently than that.
00:15:32 --> 00:15:35 We interpret freedom as having no masters of constraints whatsoever.
00:15:35 --> 00:15:37 No boundaries, no constraints.
00:15:38 --> 00:15:41 It's freedom to choose to live life any way I want to live.
00:15:42 --> 00:15:46 And Exodus works against that definition for us.
00:15:46 --> 00:15:54 Until we are captivated by the beauty and the presence of the God who made us and love us,
00:15:55 --> 00:15:57 we are never free.
00:15:58 --> 00:15:59 Never free.
00:16:00 --> 00:16:04 Unless we are centered on him and we serve him and we worship him,
00:16:05 --> 00:16:08 then we are always a slave to something else.
00:16:08 --> 00:16:11 Something else has captivated us.
00:16:12 --> 00:16:18 Anything that we center our life on more than God makes us a slave to it.
00:16:20 --> 00:16:21 How does that happen?
00:16:22 --> 00:16:26 Well, every single human being has something that they live for.
00:16:27 --> 00:16:30 Something that makes us think that if we have it,
00:16:30 --> 00:16:33 we have security and we have significance.
00:16:34 --> 00:16:36 It might be, let's just pick on us for a moment,
00:16:36 --> 00:16:37 it might be a religious thing.
00:16:39 --> 00:16:42 Where we feel significant, we feel secure,
00:16:42 --> 00:16:46 we feel hopeful because we are devout and we are good.
00:16:47 --> 00:16:49 Whatever it is, it might be our family,
00:16:49 --> 00:16:53 it might be success, professional status, a good name.
00:16:53 --> 00:16:59 It could be anything that makes us feel significant, happy and secure.
00:16:59 --> 00:17:07 However, you can generally tell what it is because we generally respond with anger
00:17:07 --> 00:17:10 when someone tries to take that thing away from us.
00:17:10 --> 00:17:15 Or we are terribly despondent and troubled when we lose it.
00:17:16 --> 00:17:20 Our sense of identity and worth is wrapped up in our career,
00:17:21 --> 00:17:24 our work that we do, we lose it,
00:17:24 --> 00:17:26 into depression real quick.
00:17:26 --> 00:17:28 Can't focus in life.
00:17:32 --> 00:17:34 But if you must have it, this is the thing,
00:17:35 --> 00:17:39 if you must have that thing in order to feel good about yourself and your life,
00:17:40 --> 00:17:43 then what that means is, is you are actually serving it.
00:17:45 --> 00:17:48 Constantly striving for it, to have it.
00:17:48 --> 00:17:51 You're not free, you're not living free,
00:17:51 --> 00:17:53 you're pursuing that thing.
00:17:53 --> 00:17:57 Striving to get that thing.
00:17:58 --> 00:18:00 You are not free, you are chained to it
00:18:00 --> 00:18:03 and anything that can threaten it.
00:18:04 --> 00:18:05 And so therefore you live in fear.
00:18:08 --> 00:18:12 Exodus tells us that our journey out of slavery isn't done
00:18:12 --> 00:18:16 until we come to rest in worship and service and love of God.
00:18:17 --> 00:18:20 He's the only one who deserves the highest allegiance of our life.
00:18:20 --> 00:18:24 The second principle of salvation we see here
00:18:24 --> 00:18:27 is that we are usually prepared for salvation
00:18:27 --> 00:18:32 through difficult and hard times in life.
00:18:33 --> 00:18:37 One of the striking things about the first two chapters of Exodus
00:18:37 --> 00:18:41 is that God is hardly mentioned at all.
00:18:44 --> 00:18:46 Things are going from bad to worse
00:18:46 --> 00:18:49 and God hardly even seems to be around.
00:18:51 --> 00:18:53 First, Pharaoh enslaves the people
00:18:53 --> 00:18:55 and when that doesn't work,
00:18:55 --> 00:18:57 he tries to kill all the male infants,
00:18:58 --> 00:19:00 which is an act of cultural genocide.
00:19:00 --> 00:19:04 And when he can't get the midwives to do it subtly and quietly,
00:19:04 --> 00:19:06 then he orders everyone,
00:19:06 --> 00:19:08 and I'm assuming here,
00:19:08 --> 00:19:11 this is an order for not just the Egyptian population,
00:19:11 --> 00:19:14 but for the Hebrew population as well.
00:19:14 --> 00:19:17 You see a baby boy,
00:19:17 --> 00:19:19 Hebrew boy playing in a playground,
00:19:19 --> 00:19:21 you grab him and you throw him in the Nile.
00:19:22 --> 00:19:24 It's an order for all of the population.
00:19:27 --> 00:19:29 It gets worse and worse
00:19:29 --> 00:19:30 and the one person
00:19:30 --> 00:19:33 in chapters one and two,
00:19:33 --> 00:19:34 the one person
00:19:34 --> 00:19:37 who looks like he might be able to do something
00:19:37 --> 00:19:40 turns out to be no good at all
00:19:40 --> 00:19:42 when in anger he murders an Egyptian man.
00:19:44 --> 00:19:46 In that act,
00:19:46 --> 00:19:48 he alienates both God's people
00:19:48 --> 00:19:50 and gets Pharaoh as an enemy.
00:19:51 --> 00:19:53 He ends up running off into the desert,
00:19:53 --> 00:19:54 gets cut off from the power
00:19:54 --> 00:19:55 and the position
00:19:55 --> 00:19:57 that he could have used
00:19:57 --> 00:19:59 in order to help his people
00:19:59 --> 00:20:00 out of the plight that they're in.
00:20:02 --> 00:20:03 Everything gets worse
00:20:03 --> 00:20:05 to worse to worse
00:20:05 --> 00:20:06 and you've got to ask,
00:20:06 --> 00:20:06 where is God?
00:20:08 --> 00:20:10 Two long chapters
00:20:10 --> 00:20:12 covering decades
00:20:12 --> 00:20:14 and I mean decades
00:20:14 --> 00:20:15 of Israel's history
00:20:15 --> 00:20:16 and God is mentioned
00:20:16 --> 00:20:17 in verse 17
00:20:17 --> 00:20:19 and verse 20
00:20:19 --> 00:20:20 and that's all.
00:20:21 --> 00:20:22 That's all.
00:20:24 --> 00:20:26 But is that not the natural sense
00:20:26 --> 00:20:27 that we have
00:20:27 --> 00:20:28 when things are going bad in life?
00:20:31 --> 00:20:32 God, where are you?
00:20:33 --> 00:20:35 You just don't seem to be there.
00:20:35 --> 00:20:38 God seems absent.
00:20:38 --> 00:20:39 He seems powerless.
00:20:39 --> 00:20:40 He even seems careless.
00:20:43 --> 00:20:45 And yet these chapters
00:20:45 --> 00:20:46 turn that whole idea
00:20:46 --> 00:20:47 on their head
00:20:47 --> 00:20:51 when you dig in a bit closer to them.
00:20:53 --> 00:20:55 Every bad thing here
00:20:55 --> 00:20:57 turns out for good.
00:20:57 --> 00:20:58 It's remarkable.
00:20:58 --> 00:21:00 everything that Pharaoh
00:21:00 --> 00:21:02 tries to do here
00:21:02 --> 00:21:05 doesn't just backfire on him
00:21:05 --> 00:21:06 but it accomplishes
00:21:06 --> 00:21:07 the exact opposite
00:21:07 --> 00:21:09 of what he was hoping to achieve.
00:21:10 --> 00:21:13 He enslaves the Israelites
00:21:13 --> 00:21:15 who didn't know their God
00:21:15 --> 00:21:18 and he tries to get the midwives
00:21:18 --> 00:21:20 to murder the male babies.
00:21:21 --> 00:21:22 Verse 20 however
00:21:22 --> 00:21:22 tells us
00:21:22 --> 00:21:24 the midwives
00:21:24 --> 00:21:25 feared God
00:21:25 --> 00:21:27 they were brave
00:21:27 --> 00:21:28 and
00:21:28 --> 00:21:29 they had children
00:21:29 --> 00:21:29 themselves
00:21:29 --> 00:21:31 and the Israelites
00:21:31 --> 00:21:32 increased in number.
00:21:33 --> 00:21:35 One of the great
00:21:35 --> 00:21:36 ironies of these chapters
00:21:36 --> 00:21:38 is that it is only
00:21:38 --> 00:21:38 because
00:21:38 --> 00:21:41 it is only because
00:21:41 --> 00:21:43 Pharaoh
00:21:43 --> 00:21:44 tried to kill off
00:21:44 --> 00:21:46 all the male infants
00:21:46 --> 00:21:47 that Moses
00:21:47 --> 00:21:48 was brought
00:21:48 --> 00:21:49 into
00:21:49 --> 00:21:51 the Egyptian palace
00:21:51 --> 00:21:52 and received
00:21:52 --> 00:21:53 the training needed
00:21:53 --> 00:21:54 to become a liberator.
00:21:55 --> 00:21:57 It's only because of that.
00:21:58 --> 00:21:59 Only because
00:21:59 --> 00:22:00 of the decree
00:22:00 --> 00:22:00 to kill
00:22:00 --> 00:22:02 all the male infants
00:22:02 --> 00:22:03 is Moses
00:22:03 --> 00:22:04 nursed
00:22:04 --> 00:22:05 by his own mother
00:22:05 --> 00:22:06 for the early years
00:22:06 --> 00:22:06 of his life
00:22:06 --> 00:22:08 probably three to four years
00:22:08 --> 00:22:09 he received
00:22:09 --> 00:22:10 his own
00:22:10 --> 00:22:12 Israelite identity
00:22:12 --> 00:22:13 before going
00:22:13 --> 00:22:14 into the palace
00:22:14 --> 00:22:15 and receiving
00:22:15 --> 00:22:16 the best academic
00:22:16 --> 00:22:17 and military training
00:22:17 --> 00:22:18 in the land
00:22:18 --> 00:22:20 in the world
00:22:20 --> 00:22:20 at the time.
00:22:22 --> 00:22:23 It's only because
00:22:23 --> 00:22:23 of that decree
00:22:23 --> 00:22:26 the ideal liberator
00:22:26 --> 00:22:27 was created
00:22:27 --> 00:22:28 by the decree
00:22:28 --> 00:22:29 designed to destroy
00:22:29 --> 00:22:30 the people
