00:00:05 --> 00:00:08 Do you remember your New Year resolutions?
00:00:10 --> 00:00:14 Suppose you are on track and still keeping with them, congratulations.
00:00:15 --> 00:00:18 But for some of us, you might say, what resolutions?
00:00:19 --> 00:00:24 I did not bother setting any because I knew I would not keep that damn for too long.
00:00:24 --> 00:00:30 I wonder how soon into the new years did you usually gave up on your resolutions?
00:00:31 --> 00:00:33 We have been reading through the book of Exodus.
00:00:34 --> 00:00:41 The people of Israel were chosen by God to be rescued from slavery in Egypt.
00:00:42 --> 00:00:46 God has a plan to bring them to a promised land,
00:00:46 --> 00:00:50 to live among them and for them to serve and worship Him.
00:00:50 --> 00:00:55 And ultimately to use them to bless the rest of His creations.
00:00:57 --> 00:01:01 A couple of weeks ago, we joined them at the high point of their journey
00:01:01 --> 00:01:06 with God when they say resolutely in one voice in chapter 24,
00:01:07 --> 00:01:11 we will do everything the Lord has said we will obey.
00:01:12 --> 00:01:16 They resolved to enter into a confident relationship with God
00:01:16 --> 00:01:17 to worship Him exclusively.
00:01:17 --> 00:01:24 Today we are in chapter 32 and we came to a crisis point of their relationship with God
00:01:24 --> 00:01:26 because they have done it again.
00:01:27 --> 00:01:34 They turned from their commitment and made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf.
00:01:36 --> 00:01:37 We are present with a dilemma.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:42 Can a holy God live among sinful people?
00:01:42 --> 00:01:50 Can a holy God live among them?
00:01:50 --> 00:01:50 Can a holy God live among them?
00:01:51 --> 00:01:54 Being God of righteousness and justice,
00:01:55 --> 00:01:57 He cannot turn a blind eye to sin.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:01 And in His compassion and grace,
00:02:01 --> 00:02:03 He is always merciful and loving.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:08 So how is God going to balance justice and love?
00:02:10 --> 00:02:13 The end of chapter 24 indicates that
00:02:13 --> 00:02:16 after they declared allegiance to God,
00:02:17 --> 00:02:18 Moses, their leader,
00:02:18 --> 00:02:21 stayed up in the mountain for about 40 days,
00:02:22 --> 00:02:26 getting the details of how they should live with the holy God among them.
00:02:26 --> 00:02:28 And in chapter 32,
00:02:29 --> 00:02:30 they created,
00:02:30 --> 00:02:31 the created,
00:02:32 --> 00:02:33 disrespect their creator,
00:02:34 --> 00:02:35 and made for themselves an idol.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:41 They turned their God's original plan for creation upside down.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:45 Again, by trying to be a creator.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:47 Only 40 days.
00:02:47 --> 00:02:49 And they say,
00:02:49 --> 00:02:52 Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain.
00:02:53 --> 00:02:54 And they hassled Aaron,
00:02:55 --> 00:02:56 their assistant leader,
00:02:56 --> 00:02:57 to make them gods
00:02:57 --> 00:02:59 who will go before them.
00:03:00 --> 00:03:02 And when an idol in the shape of a calf
00:03:02 --> 00:03:04 was cast and fashioned,
00:03:04 --> 00:03:06 the people call it their God.
00:03:07 --> 00:03:08 They have broken all of the three,
00:03:09 --> 00:03:11 first three commandments by their actions.
00:03:13 --> 00:03:16 Were they impatient to wait at the bottom of the mountains,
00:03:16 --> 00:03:20 wanting to settle in the promised land as soon as possible?
00:03:21 --> 00:03:22 Last Sunday,
00:03:23 --> 00:03:26 James told us that the home God prepared for themselves
00:03:26 --> 00:03:28 was so magnificent and inviting.
00:03:29 --> 00:03:31 And back in chapter 29,
00:03:31 --> 00:03:34 we were told that Israel tends to force their way
00:03:34 --> 00:03:35 into whatever they wanted.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:38 But there is something deeper,
00:03:39 --> 00:03:41 a deeper issue going on.
00:03:41 --> 00:03:44 And the issue is idolatry and sin.
00:03:44 --> 00:03:47 Charles Spurgeon,
00:03:47 --> 00:03:50 an English preacher in the late 18th century,
00:03:50 --> 00:03:51 said in one of his sermons,
00:03:52 --> 00:03:53 when we sin,
00:03:54 --> 00:03:56 it is taking God's mercy
00:03:56 --> 00:03:58 to leverage them upon his enemies.
00:04:00 --> 00:04:01 He points out that
00:04:01 --> 00:04:03 idolatry is people offering
00:04:03 --> 00:04:05 the riches given by God
00:04:05 --> 00:04:07 before the shrine of their greed.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:09 They prostitute
00:04:09 --> 00:04:11 the God-given talent
00:04:11 --> 00:04:12 to serve
00:04:12 --> 00:04:14 to the service
00:04:14 --> 00:04:15 of their ambitions.
00:04:16 --> 00:04:18 God gives them judgment
00:04:18 --> 00:04:20 and they indulge in their advancement
00:04:20 --> 00:04:21 and seek not
00:04:22 --> 00:04:24 the interests of God's kingdom.
00:04:25 --> 00:04:26 God gives them influence
00:04:26 --> 00:04:28 and they use their influence
00:04:28 --> 00:04:29 to enlarge themselves
00:04:29 --> 00:04:32 and not for the honor of God.
00:04:32 --> 00:04:36 James shared with me
00:04:36 --> 00:04:37 something
00:04:37 --> 00:04:39 from our very own brother,
00:04:39 --> 00:04:39 Damien,
00:04:40 --> 00:04:40 regarding idols,
00:04:41 --> 00:04:42 which is very profound and true.
00:04:43 --> 00:04:43 Damien said,
00:04:44 --> 00:04:45 people put their gold
00:04:45 --> 00:04:46 into their hearts
00:04:46 --> 00:04:48 and outcome their idols.
00:04:50 --> 00:04:51 Idol worship
00:04:51 --> 00:04:53 is also an act of stupidity.
00:04:54 --> 00:04:55 In Psalm 106,
00:04:56 --> 00:04:58 verse 20,
00:04:58 --> 00:04:59 they exchanged
00:04:59 --> 00:05:00 the glorious God
00:05:00 --> 00:05:02 for an image of a bull
00:05:02 --> 00:05:04 which eat grass.
00:05:05 --> 00:05:06 Paul says in
00:05:06 --> 00:05:08 Romans 1, 25,
00:05:08 --> 00:05:09 that humanity
00:05:09 --> 00:05:10 exchanged the truth
00:05:10 --> 00:05:11 about God
00:05:11 --> 00:05:12 for a lie
00:05:12 --> 00:05:13 and worship
00:05:13 --> 00:05:14 and serve
00:05:14 --> 00:05:15 created things
00:05:15 --> 00:05:16 rather than the creator.
00:05:18 --> 00:05:19 God lay out
00:05:19 --> 00:05:20 back in chapter 20
00:05:20 --> 00:05:20 that
00:05:20 --> 00:05:23 they shall not have
00:05:23 --> 00:05:24 they shall not have
00:05:24 --> 00:05:25 God before him.
00:05:26 --> 00:05:27 They shall not make
00:05:27 --> 00:05:28 for themselves
00:05:28 --> 00:05:28 an image
00:05:28 --> 00:05:30 in the form of anything
00:05:30 --> 00:05:31 in heaven
00:05:31 --> 00:05:32 or on earth
00:05:32 --> 00:05:33 or in the water
00:05:33 --> 00:05:34 nor bow down
00:05:34 --> 00:05:35 to them
00:05:35 --> 00:05:36 or worship them
00:05:36 --> 00:05:37 and they shall not
00:05:37 --> 00:05:38 misuse the name
00:05:38 --> 00:05:39 of the Lord their God.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:42 He explains that
00:05:42 --> 00:05:43 those who bow down
00:05:43 --> 00:05:44 and worship idols
00:05:44 --> 00:05:45 are the same as
00:05:45 --> 00:05:46 hatreds towards him
00:05:46 --> 00:05:49 and earning punishment
00:05:49 --> 00:05:49 for themselves
00:05:49 --> 00:05:51 and their children
00:05:51 --> 00:05:52 to the third
00:05:52 --> 00:05:53 and fourth generations
00:05:53 --> 00:05:55 and he will not
00:05:55 --> 00:05:57 hold anyone guiltless
00:05:57 --> 00:05:59 who misuses name.
00:05:59 --> 00:06:01 but on the other hand
00:06:01 --> 00:06:02 in the same chapter
00:06:02 --> 00:06:04 it says that
00:06:04 --> 00:06:05 he shows mercy,
00:06:05 --> 00:06:06 he shows love
00:06:06 --> 00:06:07 to the thousand
00:06:07 --> 00:06:08 generations
00:06:08 --> 00:06:08 of those
00:06:08 --> 00:06:09 who love him
00:06:09 --> 00:06:10 and keep his commandments.
00:06:12 --> 00:06:13 As their
00:06:13 --> 00:06:14 confident partner,
00:06:14 --> 00:06:16 God has all the right
00:06:16 --> 00:06:17 to demand
00:06:17 --> 00:06:18 the penalty
00:06:18 --> 00:06:18 of that breach
00:06:18 --> 00:06:19 of contract.
00:06:20 --> 00:06:21 He can call
00:06:21 --> 00:06:22 on the terms
00:06:22 --> 00:06:24 and being God
00:06:24 --> 00:06:24 and the creator
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 of the whole world
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 can make a new
00:06:27 --> 00:06:27 group of people
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 and he told Moses
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 in our chapter today,
00:06:31 --> 00:06:32 chapter 32,
00:06:32 --> 00:06:33 verse 9 to 10
00:06:33 --> 00:06:34 of that intention.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 I have seen
00:06:36 --> 00:06:37 these people,
00:06:37 --> 00:06:38 the Lord said to Moses,
00:06:39 --> 00:06:39 and they are
00:06:39 --> 00:06:41 a sneaked-necked people.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 Now leave me alone
00:06:42 --> 00:06:43 so that my anger
00:06:43 --> 00:06:45 may burn against them
00:06:45 --> 00:06:47 and that I may destroy them.
00:06:47 --> 00:06:48 Then I will make you
00:06:48 --> 00:06:49 into a great nation.
00:06:50 --> 00:06:51 Great nation.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:52 However,
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 he has
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 confident himself
00:06:56 --> 00:06:57 to their
00:06:57 --> 00:06:57 ancestors,
00:06:58 --> 00:06:59 Abraham,
00:06:59 --> 00:07:00 Isaac,
00:07:00 --> 00:07:01 and Israel
00:07:01 --> 00:07:03 to make
00:07:03 --> 00:07:04 their offspring
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 into a great nation
00:07:05 --> 00:07:07 and there are
00:07:07 --> 00:07:08 other contractual
00:07:08 --> 00:07:08 obligations
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 that God
00:07:09 --> 00:07:10 has put himself
00:07:10 --> 00:07:10 into
00:07:10 --> 00:07:12 with his creations.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 There is a
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 fundamental tension
00:07:15 --> 00:07:17 between justice
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 and mercy
00:07:18 --> 00:07:19 of God,
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 especially
00:07:20 --> 00:07:21 when a group
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 of people
00:07:22 --> 00:07:23 who are stubborn,
00:07:23 --> 00:07:24 rebellious,
00:07:24 --> 00:07:24 and evil.
00:07:25 --> 00:07:27 God would be right
00:07:27 --> 00:07:28 to lay down
00:07:28 --> 00:07:29 his judgment
00:07:29 --> 00:07:29 on them
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 and destroy them
00:07:30 --> 00:07:32 right there and then.
00:07:33 --> 00:07:34 Tim Chester said
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 that when God
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 said to Moses
00:07:36 --> 00:07:36 in verse 10,
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 now leave me alone
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 so that my anger
00:07:39 --> 00:07:41 may burn against them
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 and that I may destroy them,
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 which may imply
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 an invitation
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 for Moses
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 to intervene.
00:07:47 --> 00:07:49 as he's saying,
00:07:50 --> 00:07:51 when you leave me alone,
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 I will destroy
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 your people,
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 but if you don't
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 leave me alone,
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 then things might
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 turn out
00:07:57 --> 00:07:57 very differently.
00:08:00 --> 00:08:00 Moses did
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 plead
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 for the mercy
00:08:02 --> 00:08:04 for God's people
00:08:04 --> 00:08:05 by focusing
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 on God's glory
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 and God
00:08:07 --> 00:08:08 heed his prayer
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 and relent,
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 which changed history
00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 and present us
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 with a mystery.
00:08:13 --> 00:08:16 elsewhere in the Bible
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 taught us that
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 God does not
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 change his mind.
00:08:20 --> 00:08:20 So what happens
00:08:20 --> 00:08:21 when we pray?
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 Will our prayer
00:08:24 --> 00:08:24 make a difference?
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 Tim Chester suggested
00:08:28 --> 00:08:30 that the best way
00:08:30 --> 00:08:30 to look at prayer
00:08:30 --> 00:08:32 is God intends
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 our prayer
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 to be how
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 he changed the world.
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 God invites Moses
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 to share his compassion
00:08:39 --> 00:08:41 for his people.
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 We see in verse 19
00:08:42 --> 00:08:44 that Moses burned
00:08:44 --> 00:08:45 with anger
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 as God's anger
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 burns against Aaron
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 and Israel
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 in verse 10.
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 Verse 19 says,
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 when Moses approached
00:08:52 --> 00:08:52 the camp
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 and saw the calf
00:08:53 --> 00:08:55 and the dancing,
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 his anger burned
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 and he threw
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 the tablets
00:08:58 --> 00:08:59 out of his hands,
00:08:59 --> 00:09:00 breaking them
00:09:00 --> 00:09:00 to pieces
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 at the foot
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 of the mountain.
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 Even though
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 he is all-powerful
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 and all-knowing,
00:09:07 --> 00:09:09 God never works alone.
00:09:10 --> 00:09:11 The Father,
00:09:11 --> 00:09:11 the Son,
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 and the Holy Spirit
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 created the world
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 together.
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 They addressed sin
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 and redeemed
00:09:17 --> 00:09:18 the world together.
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 And God
00:09:20 --> 00:09:20 invites
00:09:20 --> 00:09:22 and allows
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 his creation
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 to work
00:09:24 --> 00:09:25 with him
00:09:25 --> 00:09:25 in showing
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 compassion
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 and mercy
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 as well as
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 exercising
00:09:29 --> 00:09:29 judgment
00:09:29 --> 00:09:31 and justice.
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 What a privilege
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 it is
00:09:34 --> 00:09:34 to be counted
00:09:34 --> 00:09:35 worthy
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 as a fellow
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 worker of God.
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 How foolish
00:09:39 --> 00:09:39 of us
00:09:39 --> 00:09:40 if we give away
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 this privilege
00:09:41 --> 00:09:43 by not living
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 according to the
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 creator order
00:09:45 --> 00:09:47 and exclude God
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 from our lives,
00:09:49 --> 00:09:49 especially
00:09:49 --> 00:09:51 when we
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 create for ourselves
00:09:52 --> 00:09:53 idols
00:09:53 --> 00:09:54 to worship.
00:09:54 --> 00:09:57 when we
00:09:57 --> 00:09:57 live
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 like we
00:09:58 --> 00:09:58 are the
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 creator,
00:09:59 --> 00:09:59 we will
00:09:59 --> 00:10:00 end up
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 like Israel,
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 trying to
00:10:02 --> 00:10:02 create an image
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 for the
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 living God.
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 And we
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 break our
00:10:06 --> 00:10:06 confident
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 relationship
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 with God
00:10:08 --> 00:10:09 and worship
00:10:09 --> 00:10:09 a lie.
00:10:11 --> 00:10:11 We are
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 tearing apart
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 our contract
00:10:13 --> 00:10:13 with God.
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 We broke
00:10:15 --> 00:10:15 our promise
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 like Moses
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 broke the
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 two tablets
00:10:18 --> 00:10:18 into pieces
00:10:18 --> 00:10:20 at the foot
00:10:20 --> 00:10:20 of the mountain.
00:10:20 --> 00:10:22 our relationship
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 with God
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 scattered
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 into pieces
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 and their
00:10:26 --> 00:10:26 penalty
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 to be paid
00:10:27 --> 00:10:29 due to
00:10:29 --> 00:10:29 the breach
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 of contract.
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 At that point,
00:10:33 --> 00:10:33 what Israel
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 needed,
00:10:35 --> 00:10:35 what we
00:10:35 --> 00:10:35 needed
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 as we
00:10:36 --> 00:10:36 break our
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 relationship
00:10:37 --> 00:10:37 with God
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 is an
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 atonement
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 for our
00:10:40 --> 00:10:40 actions.
00:10:42 --> 00:10:42 Moses
00:10:42 --> 00:10:43 tried to
00:10:43 --> 00:10:43 be that
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 atonement
00:10:44 --> 00:10:44 but before
00:10:44 --> 00:10:45 that,
00:10:45 --> 00:10:45 there is
00:10:45 --> 00:10:46 something he
00:10:46 --> 00:10:46 has to
00:10:46 --> 00:10:46 do
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 in verse
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 25 to
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 26.
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 Moses
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 saw that
00:10:52 --> 00:10:52 the people
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 were running
00:10:53 --> 00:10:53 wild
00:10:53 --> 00:10:54 and that
00:10:54 --> 00:10:54 Aaron
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 had let
00:10:55 --> 00:10:55 them
00:10:55 --> 00:10:55 get out
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 of control
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 and so
00:10:57 --> 00:10:57 become
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 a laughingstock
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 to their
00:10:59 --> 00:10:59 enemies.
00:11:00 --> 00:11:01 So he
00:11:01 --> 00:11:01 stood at
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 the entrance
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 at the camp
00:11:03 --> 00:11:03 and said,
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 whoever is
00:11:04 --> 00:11:04 for the
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 Lord,
00:11:05 --> 00:11:05 come to
00:11:05 --> 00:11:05 me.
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 And all
00:11:07 --> 00:11:07 the
00:11:07 --> 00:11:07 Levites
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 rallied
00:11:08 --> 00:11:08 to him.
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 He
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 has called
00:11:11 --> 00:11:11 them to
00:11:11 --> 00:11:11 repentance.
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 He
00:11:14 --> 00:11:14 has
00:11:14 --> 00:11:14 to
00:11:14 --> 00:11:14 call
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 to a
00:11:15 --> 00:11:15 stop
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 of their
00:11:16 --> 00:11:16 foolishness
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 and out
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 of control
00:11:18 --> 00:11:18 worshiping.
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 And that
00:11:20 --> 00:11:20 day,
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 about
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 3
00:11:22 --> 00:11:22 of the
00:11:22 --> 00:11:22 people
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 died
00:11:23 --> 00:11:23 in the
00:11:23 --> 00:11:23 hands
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 of the
00:11:24 --> 00:11:24 Levites.
00:11:25 --> 00:11:25 They were
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 set apart
00:11:26 --> 00:11:26 to the
00:11:26 --> 00:11:26 Lord,
00:11:27 --> 00:11:27 willing to
00:11:27 --> 00:11:27 stand on
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 God's
00:11:28 --> 00:11:28 side.
00:11:30 --> 00:11:30 Instead
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 of joining
00:11:31 --> 00:11:31 their
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 fellow
00:11:32 --> 00:11:32 people
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 in
00:11:33 --> 00:11:33 parting
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 uncontrollably,
