00:00:04 --> 00:00:05 Nice to see you all today.
00:00:06 --> 00:00:10 If I was to ask you to picture home in your mind,
00:00:10 --> 00:00:12 what would you imagine?
00:00:12 --> 00:00:13 Do that for me.
00:00:13 --> 00:00:14 What does home look like?
00:00:16 --> 00:00:20 Is it noisy people around a dinner table?
00:00:21 --> 00:00:25 Is it time talking over food and talking over tea and coffee?
00:00:25 --> 00:00:28 Is it the warm embrace of a loved one?
00:00:30 --> 00:00:33 Is it being with the people you know and love,
00:00:33 --> 00:00:36 who know and love you and you know and love them?
00:00:37 --> 00:00:41 Is it being in the place where you feel comforted and supported and cared for?
00:00:42 --> 00:00:45 Now, this might be a really loving picture for some of us.
00:00:46 --> 00:00:48 This might be something that happens quite often
00:00:48 --> 00:00:51 that we actually need to be more thankful to God for.
00:00:51 --> 00:00:55 But for others, that kind of picture of home
00:00:55 --> 00:00:58 is almost impossible to achieve.
00:00:58 --> 00:01:02 A family might be overseas or in another state
00:01:02 --> 00:01:04 and with COVID and lockdowns,
00:01:04 --> 00:01:06 to see family is incredibly difficult.
00:01:07 --> 00:01:08 Maybe we've lost family members
00:01:08 --> 00:01:12 or maybe we have broken relationship with our family.
00:01:13 --> 00:01:16 This picture of home might actually be just cold
00:01:16 --> 00:01:19 and lonely and difficult.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:24 You may long for home because you've moved around so much
00:01:24 --> 00:01:26 that you just don't know where home is.
00:01:26 --> 00:01:28 Maybe you live far away from your family
00:01:28 --> 00:01:29 and long to live near them.
00:01:30 --> 00:01:32 You may long for family that you'd want to be near.
00:01:34 --> 00:01:36 Because some people live with a longing for a home
00:01:36 --> 00:01:38 in which they feel safe and loved.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:44 We all have a longing for home inside of us.
00:01:44 --> 00:01:48 To be known and loved, to have deep relationships.
00:01:48 --> 00:01:51 And we can do a lot of things to try and get that image
00:01:51 --> 00:01:53 or to keep that image safe.
00:01:54 --> 00:01:58 Each of us have a longing for home inside of us.
00:01:59 --> 00:02:01 And this is only found
00:02:01 --> 00:02:05 when we get to the home that we were made for.
00:02:05 --> 00:02:11 We are in a series at the moment,
00:02:11 --> 00:02:12 going through the book of Exodus,
00:02:12 --> 00:02:15 called Ordinary People, Extraordinary God.
00:02:15 --> 00:02:17 And we've seen so far in this series
00:02:17 --> 00:02:19 that God has taken a people,
00:02:20 --> 00:02:21 taken them out of Egypt,
00:02:21 --> 00:02:22 saved them out of Egypt with plagues,
00:02:23 --> 00:02:24 with a miracle at the Red Sea,
00:02:25 --> 00:02:26 parting the sea so they could get through it.
00:02:27 --> 00:02:29 He's taken the people to Mount Sinai.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:31 God has made a covenant,
00:02:31 --> 00:02:37 a long-lasting relationship with his people.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:39 He's given them laws,
00:02:39 --> 00:02:43 and now God is going to make a home with these people.
00:02:44 --> 00:02:46 The challenge for us will be today
00:02:46 --> 00:02:49 is to think about where our home is.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:53 Because God offers us his home,
00:02:53 --> 00:02:56 a place of love and safety and comfort.
00:02:56 --> 00:02:57 And the question will be,
00:02:57 --> 00:02:59 will we journey to that home?
00:02:59 --> 00:03:02 So as we get into Exodus 25
00:03:02 --> 00:03:03 and a couple of chapters after that,
00:03:03 --> 00:03:04 let me pray for us.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:06 Heavenly Father,
00:03:07 --> 00:03:11 as we look at this picture of home today,
00:03:12 --> 00:03:14 help us to long for the home
00:03:14 --> 00:03:15 you are preparing for us, Lord.
00:03:16 --> 00:03:16 Amen.
00:03:17 --> 00:03:18 Let's see two points today.
00:03:19 --> 00:03:21 First of all, we're going to see the map
00:03:21 --> 00:03:23 that points to home,
00:03:23 --> 00:03:25 and then how we journey to this home.
00:03:26 --> 00:03:28 You can be following along in the St. Paul's app.
00:03:28 --> 00:03:31 Let me encourage you to be taking notes there on paper.
00:03:32 --> 00:03:35 Write them on your hand and up your arm if you need to.
00:03:36 --> 00:03:39 First of all, Exodus 25 from verse 8.
00:03:40 --> 00:03:43 Then have them make a sanctuary for me,
00:03:43 --> 00:03:45 and I will dwell among them.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:47 Now, this is actually quite amazing.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:50 The God of the universe,
00:03:51 --> 00:03:53 the God who is everywhere,
00:03:53 --> 00:03:54 knows everything,
00:03:54 --> 00:03:57 knows the beat of every single heart,
00:03:57 --> 00:03:59 who made the smallest ant
00:03:59 --> 00:04:00 and made one of my favorite creatures,
00:04:00 --> 00:04:01 the giant sea squid.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:04 This wonderful God
00:04:04 --> 00:04:06 is going to make his home
00:04:06 --> 00:04:08 with a group of people.
00:04:09 --> 00:04:12 And this is reminiscent of a marriage relationship.
00:04:13 --> 00:04:14 In the last couple of weeks,
00:04:14 --> 00:04:16 we've seen God take his people to Mount Sinai
00:04:16 --> 00:04:18 and make a covenant with them,
00:04:18 --> 00:04:19 make a relationship,
00:04:19 --> 00:04:20 just like a marriage.
00:04:21 --> 00:04:22 And now he's moving in with them.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:25 He's going to be with them wherever they are.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:29 And God instructs them to build this tent,
00:04:29 --> 00:04:30 a tabernacle,
00:04:30 --> 00:04:32 so he can travel with them.
00:04:32 --> 00:04:34 This is the first flat pack,
00:04:34 --> 00:04:36 IKEA-style building.
00:04:36 --> 00:04:39 It's designed to be set up,
00:04:40 --> 00:04:40 packed down,
00:04:40 --> 00:04:42 set up as they move around.
00:04:44 --> 00:04:45 And to understand this fully,
00:04:45 --> 00:04:48 we need to go back to the Garden of Eden.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:50 In the Garden of Eden,
00:04:50 --> 00:04:54 God placed man and woman in the garden,
00:04:55 --> 00:04:56 in the first home.
00:04:57 --> 00:05:00 It was a place of provision and safety and rest,
00:05:01 --> 00:05:04 a place where God was with them in their home
00:05:04 --> 00:05:06 and they were known and loved.
00:05:06 --> 00:05:07 But the humans,
00:05:08 --> 00:05:10 we rejected this home and got exiled.
00:05:11 --> 00:05:14 And now as we see that the tabernacle get built,
00:05:14 --> 00:05:18 it is like a map showing the way back to that home.
00:05:19 --> 00:05:23 And so it's full of pictures and images and Easter eggs
00:05:23 --> 00:05:25 pointing back to the Garden of Eden,
00:05:26 --> 00:05:28 leading us to the home.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:30 And so God lists,
00:05:30 --> 00:05:32 we'll go through a couple of these
00:05:32 --> 00:05:34 to show it how it points back
00:05:34 --> 00:05:34 and then points forward.
00:05:35 --> 00:05:35 Firstly,
00:05:36 --> 00:05:38 there's a list of precious stones
00:05:38 --> 00:05:39 that are required
00:05:39 --> 00:05:41 for the building of the tabernacle.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:43 And the list starts with gold
00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 and ends in onyx.
00:05:46 --> 00:05:48 It's very similar in Genesis
00:05:48 --> 00:05:50 with the description of the earth.
00:05:50 --> 00:05:51 It had good gold
00:05:51 --> 00:05:53 and it had onyx.
00:05:54 --> 00:05:56 In chapter 25,
00:05:56 --> 00:05:57 verse 31 to 39,
00:05:57 --> 00:06:00 it describes the construction of the lampstand.
00:06:00 --> 00:06:04 It has buds and blossoms.
00:06:04 --> 00:06:08 This lampstand was designed to look like a tree.
00:06:09 --> 00:06:10 It's an echo of the tree of life
00:06:10 --> 00:06:12 that was found in the Garden of Eden.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:16 When God made the world in Genesis,
00:06:17 --> 00:06:19 he repeats a phrase,
00:06:19 --> 00:06:21 there's a repeated phrase,
00:06:21 --> 00:06:22 comes up seven times.
00:06:22 --> 00:06:24 God said,
00:06:24 --> 00:06:26 let there be light
00:06:26 --> 00:06:27 or let there be something.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 It's repeated seven times.
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 And now here in Exodus,
00:06:31 --> 00:06:32 there's another phrase
00:06:32 --> 00:06:33 repeated seven times.
00:06:34 --> 00:06:36 The Lord said to Moses,
00:06:37 --> 00:06:38 build this.
00:06:39 --> 00:06:40 It's the same imagery.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:43 The building of the tabernacle
00:06:43 --> 00:06:44 is like the building
00:06:44 --> 00:06:46 of our first home
00:06:46 --> 00:06:47 in the Garden of Eden.
00:06:47 --> 00:06:48 And the biggest,
00:06:48 --> 00:06:49 the most important part of this
00:06:49 --> 00:06:52 is that this is where God would dwell.
00:06:52 --> 00:06:53 God was there in the Garden of Eden.
00:06:53 --> 00:06:55 God is going to make his home
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 here in the tabernacle.
00:06:57 --> 00:06:59 This tabernacle is built
00:06:59 --> 00:07:00 with rings and poles
00:07:00 --> 00:07:02 so it could be carried around
00:07:02 --> 00:07:04 and moved with Israel
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 and then rebuilt
00:07:05 --> 00:07:06 and packed down.
00:07:08 --> 00:07:08 So,
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 this tabernacle
00:07:09 --> 00:07:11 is a new home
00:07:11 --> 00:07:13 for God with his people.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 It points back to
00:07:15 --> 00:07:17 humanity's first home,
00:07:17 --> 00:07:19 but it also gives us
00:07:19 --> 00:07:19 a road map
00:07:19 --> 00:07:21 to our final home.
00:07:22 --> 00:07:22 And there's
00:07:22 --> 00:07:23 some pieces of furniture
00:07:23 --> 00:07:25 that we're going to see here.
00:07:25 --> 00:07:26 The first three
00:07:26 --> 00:07:27 point
00:07:27 --> 00:07:29 to what makes this
00:07:29 --> 00:07:30 a really great home.
00:07:31 --> 00:07:31 So,
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 have a look with me.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:32 We're going to have a look
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 at furniture.
00:07:33 --> 00:07:34 I'm not sure if you've,
00:07:34 --> 00:07:34 you know,
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 come to church thinking,
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 I really need to spend some time
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 thinking about furniture.
00:07:38 --> 00:07:38 That's,
00:07:38 --> 00:07:40 that's what we've got here
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 in Exodus 25
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 and it actually gives us
00:07:42 --> 00:07:44 a wonderful picture of home.
00:07:44 --> 00:07:44 So,
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 let's have a look at this.
00:07:46 --> 00:07:46 First,
00:07:46 --> 00:07:47 we see the ark
00:07:47 --> 00:07:48 in chapter 25
00:07:48 --> 00:07:50 where we see
00:07:50 --> 00:07:52 that we live under God's reign.
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 From verse 10,
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 have them make an ark
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 of acacia wood
00:07:57 --> 00:07:59 two and a half cubits long,
00:07:59 --> 00:08:01 a cubit and a half wide
00:08:01 --> 00:08:03 and a cubit and a half high.
00:08:04 --> 00:08:05 Overlay it with gold,
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 pure gold,
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 both inside and out
00:08:07 --> 00:08:08 and make a gold
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 moulding around it.
00:08:10 --> 00:08:12 The picture of this ark here,
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 I don't know if you've seen
00:08:13 --> 00:08:13 Indiana Jones
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 and the Raiders of the Lost Ark
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 recently,
00:08:15 --> 00:08:15 I know I have.
00:08:16 --> 00:08:17 The picture of the ark here
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 is,
00:08:18 --> 00:08:20 it has the same size
00:08:20 --> 00:08:21 and dimensions
00:08:21 --> 00:08:23 as an ancient king's
00:08:23 --> 00:08:24 footstool.
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 What would happen is,
00:08:26 --> 00:08:27 ancient kings
00:08:27 --> 00:08:28 would have their throne,
00:08:29 --> 00:08:30 they would have their throne
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 and they would go
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 and sit on their throne
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 when they were
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 bringing judgments.
00:08:34 --> 00:08:34 You know,
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 it was the day
00:08:35 --> 00:08:37 for court cases
00:08:37 --> 00:08:37 to come before them,
00:08:37 --> 00:08:39 the king would make judgments
00:08:39 --> 00:08:39 on the world
00:08:39 --> 00:08:41 and so they would have a throne
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 and in front of the throne
00:08:42 --> 00:08:44 they would have a footstool.
00:08:44 --> 00:08:45 Okay?
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 So the footstool
00:08:46 --> 00:08:46 and the throne
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 go together
00:08:47 --> 00:08:49 as the place of judgment
00:08:49 --> 00:08:52 and the picture of the ark here
00:08:52 --> 00:08:53 is that it is
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 that very footstool.
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 Israel doesn't have
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 a human king.
00:08:59 --> 00:09:01 Israel has a theocracy,
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 a God king
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 and God is in the heavens,
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 seated in the heavens
00:09:05 --> 00:09:07 and here
00:09:07 --> 00:09:09 with the people
00:09:09 --> 00:09:11 is his footstool.
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 Sitting in the heavens
00:09:12 --> 00:09:14 his feet are on the earth
00:09:14 --> 00:09:16 and this is where he rules.
00:09:17 --> 00:09:18 God put something
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 in his footstool.
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 Verse 16.
00:09:21 --> 00:09:23 Then put in the ark
00:09:23 --> 00:09:25 the tablets of the covenant law
00:09:25 --> 00:09:26 which I will give you.
00:09:27 --> 00:09:30 God is going to rule his people
00:09:30 --> 00:09:32 through the Ten Commandments
00:09:32 --> 00:09:33 and that symbolizes
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 the entire law.
00:09:34 --> 00:09:36 The ark is the place
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 that God will rule
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 over his people.
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 At the Garden of Eden
00:09:39 --> 00:09:41 that was when Adam and Eve
00:09:41 --> 00:09:43 chose to reject God
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 and get exiled
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 from their home
00:09:45 --> 00:09:46 but here
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 God is going to rule
00:09:47 --> 00:09:49 directly over his people
00:09:49 --> 00:09:49 again.
00:09:51 --> 00:09:51 And so the picture
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 at this point is
00:09:52 --> 00:09:54 it's a golden
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 empty box
00:09:55 --> 00:09:56 that's going to have
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 the tablets in it.
00:09:57 --> 00:09:58 I love the amount of gold
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 that gets used here.
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 It's just a wonderful
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 amount of gold
00:10:02 --> 00:10:04 showing how valuable
00:10:04 --> 00:10:05 each of these pieces are
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 because it points back
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 to the awesome God
00:10:07 --> 00:10:08 that we have.
00:10:09 --> 00:10:09 But we've got
00:10:09 --> 00:10:11 a golden box
00:10:11 --> 00:10:13 and God also describes
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 the cover
00:10:14 --> 00:10:15 that's made for it.
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 It's called
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 an atonement cover.
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 It's the lid
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 that goes on the box
00:10:21 --> 00:10:23 on top of the stone tablets.
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 Now this piece of furniture
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 just like the rest
00:10:26 --> 00:10:28 has really rich
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 symbolic imagery.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 It's not just a lid.
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 It's not just a box
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 needs a lid.
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 What kind of hinge
00:10:34 --> 00:10:34 does it have?
00:10:34 --> 00:10:35 It's not that kind of thing.
00:10:36 --> 00:10:38 It's really significant
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 that the stone tablets
00:10:39 --> 00:10:40 that have the law
00:10:40 --> 00:10:41 that they are being covered
00:10:41 --> 00:10:43 because the penalty
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 of breaking the law
00:10:44 --> 00:10:46 is death.
00:10:47 --> 00:10:48 The penalty
00:10:48 --> 00:10:49 that comes from
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 disobeying God
00:10:50 --> 00:10:52 is being covered.
00:10:53 --> 00:10:53 It is if
00:10:53 --> 00:10:55 the phrase in English
00:10:55 --> 00:10:55 it is if
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 God is
00:10:56 --> 00:10:58 covering the cost
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 of his people's sin.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:02 And so at the seat
00:11:02 --> 00:11:03 of his power
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 where his footstool
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 is on earth
00:11:05 --> 00:11:06 God is going to
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 rule over his people
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 and bring justice
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 but also
00:11:09 --> 00:11:11 with the atonement cover
00:11:11 --> 00:11:11 he brings
00:11:11 --> 00:11:12 mercy.
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 Even at this stage
00:11:15 --> 00:11:16 God's people need
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 their sins
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 covered over.
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 Not covered up
00:11:19 --> 00:11:21 but covered over.
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 And God is indicating
00:11:23 --> 00:11:24 that there is going
00:11:24 --> 00:11:24 to be someone
00:11:24 --> 00:11:26 who will cover
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 the cost
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 of the people's sin.
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 That's the first
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 piece of furniture
00:11:31 --> 00:11:31 for us.
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 The second piece
00:11:33 --> 00:11:33 of furniture
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 is a table
00:11:35 --> 00:11:37 where there will be food
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 because home
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 is where we eat
00:11:39 --> 00:11:41 food with God.
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 I can't think
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 of a person's house
00:11:43 --> 00:11:45 that I've ever been into
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 that didn't have
00:11:46 --> 00:11:46 a dining table.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 I think if I came
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 into every one
00:11:49 --> 00:11:49 of your houses
00:11:49 --> 00:11:50 I would find
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 a dining table.
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 Would this be correct?
00:11:53 --> 00:11:53 Does anybody
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 not have a dining table?
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 You don't have
00:11:56 --> 00:11:56 a dining table?
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 You don't have
00:11:58 --> 00:11:58 a dining table?
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 It's too small?
00:12:00 --> 00:12:00 Okay.
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 My heart breaks
00:12:02 --> 00:12:02 for you.
00:12:03 --> 00:12:04 We'll get you
00:12:04 --> 00:12:06 in a milk crate
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 and a tiny
00:12:07 --> 00:12:08 dining table.
00:12:10 --> 00:12:10 So what does this
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 say about our houses?
00:12:12 --> 00:12:12 You know
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 I don't want to
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 pick on one person
00:12:14 --> 00:12:14 in particular.
00:12:14 --> 00:12:15 Maybe it says
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 I don't want
00:12:16 --> 00:12:16 to have fellowship.
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 I know of
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 no I'm not saying
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 that about you at all.
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 A minister I used
00:12:21 --> 00:12:22 to work with
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 he had five kids
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 large family
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 that had a large
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 dining table.
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 They got rid of that.
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 I actually have
00:12:28 --> 00:12:28 that dining table now
00:12:28 --> 00:12:30 and they got a new
00:12:30 --> 00:12:30 dining table
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 so they could have
00:12:31 --> 00:12:33 lots of people
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 at their house
00:12:34 --> 00:12:35 because they wanted
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 to feast with people.
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 They wanted to
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 open their home.
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 They wanted to do
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 food with other people
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 because that is what
00:12:41 --> 00:12:43 home so often is.
00:12:43 --> 00:12:45 Home and dining table
00:12:45 --> 00:12:46 are so central
00:12:46 --> 00:12:46 to family
00:12:46 --> 00:12:49 and it's true
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 of God's home here.
00:12:50 --> 00:12:52 A table is made
00:12:52 --> 00:12:54 verse 23
