Passage: Exodus 11:1-10


00:00:00 --> 00:00:06 Morning, everyone. Great to be in church with you and online with you. One of the things that I
00:00:06 --> 00:00:12 love reading about is military history. I've always had an interest in it and a bunch of
00:00:12 --> 00:00:21 little facts, such as this one. It is known as the shortest war in history. In fact, it's one of the
00:00:21 --> 00:00:30 greatest mismatches of power of all time. It occurred on the 27th of August, 1896. It's known
00:00:30 --> 00:00:39 as the Anglo-Zanzibar War. It turns out a usurper had taken the throne in Zanzibar, which is now part
00:00:39 --> 00:00:46 of Tanzania in Africa. It was an area that was kind of controlled by the British at the time.
00:00:46 --> 00:00:51 The British didn't like the fact that this person had sidestepped the process and taken
00:00:51 --> 00:00:58 the throne. They hit him with an ultimatum for this pretend ruler to step down, for him to stand
00:00:58 --> 00:01:07 down his troops and to evacuate the palace, to vacate the palace. In the meantime, while that
00:01:07 --> 00:01:14 ultimatum was out there, the British forces brought their navy in, their marines, their sailors, and they
00:01:14 --> 00:01:21 managed to get about 900 locals on side. As it turns out, the ultimatum was ignored.
00:01:21 --> 00:01:26 I think the deadline was something like nine o'clock on a Monday morning or something like that. It was
00:01:26 --> 00:01:37 ignored. At 9.01, the bombardment started. The pretender to the throne lost 500 soldiers,
00:01:37 --> 00:01:44 and the British lost one. When they say lost one, they had one soldier wounded. I think a self-inflicted
00:01:44 --> 00:01:50 wound, but that was all. It was a massive mismatch of power. In 38 minutes, it was all done.
00:01:50 --> 00:01:57 38 minutes, and the white flag went up above the palace. One of the biggest mismatches of power in
00:01:57 --> 00:02:04 history. But it's not as big as the mismatch we've seen in the last couple of chapters in Exodus and
00:02:04 --> 00:02:12 what John took us to last week. God's chosen people, Israel, are in slavery in Egypt, and through Moses,
00:02:12 --> 00:02:21 the God of all creation calls Pharaoh to release his people that they might worship him and serve him.
00:02:21 --> 00:02:29 Release them from slavery here that they might serve me over here. And Pharaoh, as we saw last week,
00:02:29 --> 00:02:37 defiantly declares, who is this Lord that I should obey him? In other words, I will not submit to him.
00:02:37 --> 00:02:44 I will not obey that ultimatum. And I'm going to continue on enslaving God's people. And so God
00:02:44 --> 00:02:52 shows him, and in fact, as it says in the early chapters of Exodus, that all the world might see
00:02:52 --> 00:03:04 that he is on the throne alone. And so what he does is, one by one, he defeats the pretend gods of Egypt.
00:03:04 --> 00:03:12 And today, we come to the final one, the final plague. We've had nine. This is the last plague.
00:03:12 --> 00:03:22 This final plague, in fact, gets us to the heart and to the uniqueness of the God of the Bible and
00:03:22 --> 00:03:28 of the Christian faith. So what I want us to see today, three things. If you've got the St. Paul's
00:03:28 --> 00:03:34 app, it'd be great if you open it up, because you can see the outline there. I've got three main points
00:03:34 --> 00:03:40 and a couple of other sub points in there. What I want us to see is what this passage says about the
00:03:40 --> 00:03:47 sacrificial lamb. I want to then trace through the Bible the drama of the lamb, and finally,
00:03:47 --> 00:03:54 to issue a call to look to the lamb. So first of all, the sacrificial lamb. Nine times,
00:03:54 --> 00:04:07 God has called Pharaoh to release his people, or there will be a plague. Nine times, they have ignored it.
00:04:08 --> 00:04:16 And every time, as John said last week, every single plague is a taking down of one of the deities of
00:04:16 --> 00:04:25 Egypt. Nine times, he's called it. Nine times, he said there will be punishment. Nine times,
00:04:25 --> 00:04:29 there have been a plague. Every single time, they've ignored it, and there is a consequence.
00:04:30 --> 00:04:35 And the final straw is in chapter 12, verse 12. This is the final one.
00:04:36 --> 00:04:42 On that same night, I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and
00:04:42 --> 00:04:51 animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. And so the final plague
00:04:51 --> 00:05:04 is the final defeat of Egypt's deities. And the Pharaoh was regarded as the incarnation
00:05:04 --> 00:05:14 of one of one of those deities, the sun god. The Egyptian deity, who in fact was defeated in the
00:05:14 --> 00:05:22 previous plague, the plague of darkness. And so this final plague, number 10, the final plague
00:05:22 --> 00:05:32 is to kill the firstborn, is to destroy the incarnation. This is the final defeat.
00:05:34 --> 00:05:43 Of the gods of Egypt. And in verse 23, Moses is speaking to the Israelites about what God has
00:05:43 --> 00:05:53 said. And he says this to them, he, that's God, will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses
00:05:53 --> 00:06:06 and strike you down. One of the themes that runs through the whole Bible is that when you violate
00:06:06 --> 00:06:13 God's design for creation, when you violate his design for our bodies and for relationships, in fact,
00:06:13 --> 00:06:22 he's designed for everything in life, what gets unleashed at that point are forces of decay and chaos.
00:06:22 --> 00:06:31 And all this decay and chaos has a trajectory towards a final accounting, final reckoning,
00:06:31 --> 00:06:40 a final judgment for living life as if the God of this universe does not exist, and going about daily
00:06:40 --> 00:06:49 life, violating all of his good purposes for life. And this is what this account here in Exodus 11 and 12
00:06:49 --> 00:07:00 is pointing us towards. When God says the destroyer will come, he is saying that the time of reckoning is upon you.
00:07:00 --> 00:07:11 And he's bringing it. He's the one who's bringing the reckoning. And on this one night in Egypt,
00:07:11 --> 00:07:20 the destroyer will come and they will bring, he will bring judgment. Justice will be upheld for the
00:07:20 --> 00:07:30 oppression of Israel. God will hold them accountable for violating his will, his design, and his purposes
00:07:30 --> 00:07:37 for life. And in fact, the Bible, the thing of the Bible is that every single human being will be held
00:07:37 --> 00:07:43 accountable for violating his will, design, and purpose for life.
00:07:43 --> 00:07:54 But in Exodus 11 and 12, alongside this news of devastating, irreversible judgment to come upon
00:07:54 --> 00:08:03 the most powerful nation on earth, there is good news in here. God also reveals at the same time
00:08:03 --> 00:08:14 that there is only one way to stand against the destroyer. There is only one way to be protected.
00:08:14 --> 00:08:21 There is only one way to find refuge when the destroyer comes. And the answer is a lamb.
00:08:21 --> 00:08:40 A lamb. That's it. Our little sheep. How on earth can Israel be protected from the most devastating
00:08:40 --> 00:08:50 power in the universe by Curly and Sean? I mean, how's that possible?
00:08:50 --> 00:09:01 It doesn't make any sense. This is, however, what God instructs here. He instructs his people to kill
00:09:01 --> 00:09:10 a perfect lamb. Put the blood of the lamb on your doorposts and eat the lamb in haste. And when the
00:09:10 --> 00:09:17 destroyer comes, the destroyer will notice that your house is covered in the lamb, the lamb's blood,
00:09:17 --> 00:09:24 blood, and it will pass over you. And then you'll be liberated from slavery.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:29 That's the essence of Exodus 11 and 12.
00:09:29 --> 00:09:40 Now, that is confusing at best. But it's also offensive to the modern person.
00:09:41 --> 00:09:51 This passage here that was just read out to us makes no sense at all unless it's put in the context
00:09:51 --> 00:10:00 context of the whole Bible in its historical context. We need to understand the drama of the lamb
00:10:00 --> 00:10:05 to get the meaning of what's happening here in Exodus 11 and 12.
00:10:07 --> 00:10:09 So let's look at the drama of the lamb.
00:10:09 --> 00:10:21 The first scene of the drama of the lamb in the Bible is Abraham and Isaac in Genesis 22.
00:10:22 --> 00:10:25 So if you've got your Bibles, you can flick over to Genesis 22. We'll be there for a little bit.
00:10:27 --> 00:10:33 God instructs Abraham to offer up his only son, Isaac, as a sacrifice to him.
00:10:33 --> 00:10:41 Now, when I read that as a modern person, my instinct is to think how really inappropriate
00:10:41 --> 00:10:50 thing for God to say to Abraham to go and offer up his son, Isaac, as a sacrifice. It's insane to
00:10:50 --> 00:10:57 the modern mind and especially the modern Western sensibilities. Surely Abraham would have thought
00:10:57 --> 00:11:03 exactly the same as I do. Surely Abraham has the same mind on this that I do.
00:11:06 --> 00:11:14 No. No, he wouldn't have. He exists in a different cultural context than we do.
00:11:15 --> 00:11:20 We tend to think, and especially those of us who are marinating in a Western culture,
00:11:20 --> 00:11:27 we think in terms of individualism. Ancient people didn't have individual aspirations.
00:11:27 --> 00:11:33 Aspirations were for the prominence and for the success and for the prosperity of their family.
00:11:33 --> 00:11:39 It was deeply connected to their family and tribe. If a family member acted shamefully,
00:11:40 --> 00:11:44 then the whole family was responsible for that member acting shamefully.
00:11:46 --> 00:11:52 We don't think like that in Western culture and certainly not in Australian Western culture.
00:11:52 --> 00:11:57 We are our own people. We are radically individualistic.
00:11:58 --> 00:12:03 And so if I've got a delinquent brother or sister, that's their problem, not mine.
00:12:03 --> 00:12:09 If they're shameful, that's no shame on me. That's not how it worked in Abraham's culture.
00:12:11 --> 00:12:18 We are radically individualistic. And yet the reality is for us is that we are so much the product
00:12:18 --> 00:12:27 of our family for both good and bad. Abraham also existed in a time and a culture when the firstborn son
00:12:27 --> 00:12:32 got everything. They inherited the entire estate.
00:12:35 --> 00:12:42 And so God's message to Abraham in Genesis 22 was absolutely crystal clear to him,
00:12:42 --> 00:12:48 even if it's confusing or monstrous to us.
00:12:49 --> 00:12:56 In fact, Exodus 22 verse 29 helps us understand what is happening here in Genesis 22.
00:12:57 --> 00:13:01 You must give me the firstborn of your sons.
00:13:01 --> 00:13:04 Do the same with your cattle and your sheep.
00:13:04 --> 00:13:15 The life of every firstborn was God's unless the life of that firstborn was redeemed.
00:13:16 --> 00:13:22 Every year they had to pay the price of redemption for the firstborn.
00:13:22 --> 00:13:28 Otherwise, the life of the firstborn would be forfeited for the sake of the family.
00:13:28 --> 00:13:37 And the clear message to ancient Israel was that there is a debt that hangs over every family.
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 There's a debt.
00:13:40 --> 00:13:44 The firstborn was liable for the life of that family.
00:13:45 --> 00:13:48 And the way of life of that family.
00:13:50 --> 00:13:52 The family goes stray.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:54 The firstborn's responsible.
00:13:54 --> 00:14:00 That makes no sense to the modern individualistic mind,
00:14:01 --> 00:14:04 but it's absolutely crystal clear to Abraham what's happening here.
00:14:06 --> 00:14:08 And that's why Abraham doesn't balk at it.
00:14:11 --> 00:14:14 But if God...
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 Take God out of it.
00:14:15 --> 00:14:17 If a voice came to Abraham and said,
00:14:18 --> 00:14:22 Abraham, go into the tent right now and kill Sarah.
00:14:22 --> 00:14:26 He would have gone.
00:14:26 --> 00:14:27 That's not a voice of God.
00:14:28 --> 00:14:30 That is not a message from God.
00:14:31 --> 00:14:35 That is against everything that God declares to be right and true.
00:14:36 --> 00:14:38 He would not have obeyed that one.
00:14:41 --> 00:14:46 But with Isaac, Abraham realized God was calling in the debt.
00:14:47 --> 00:14:49 This is God calling in the debt.
00:14:49 --> 00:14:53 And God had a right to do it.
00:14:54 --> 00:15:01 Isaac was going to die for the sins of Abraham and his family.
00:15:01 --> 00:15:10 And the emotion of this moment is in Genesis 22, verses 7 and 8,
00:15:10 --> 00:15:11 when Isaac says,
00:15:11 --> 00:15:14 Father, yes, my son, Abraham replied,
00:15:15 --> 00:15:18 the fire and the wood are here,
00:15:19 --> 00:15:20 but where is the lamb?
00:15:21 --> 00:15:24 Where's the lamb for the burnt offering?
00:15:24 --> 00:15:28 Abraham answered,
00:15:28 --> 00:15:32 God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.
00:15:33 --> 00:15:35 Abraham would have been hoping with all of his being
00:15:35 --> 00:15:38 that that would actually be true.
00:15:39 --> 00:15:42 He's not just distracting Isaac from the truth of this matter.
00:15:43 --> 00:15:46 He is hoping with all of his being that in this moment,
00:15:46 --> 00:15:48 a substitute would be provided.
00:15:48 --> 00:15:50 A lamb.
00:15:52 --> 00:15:55 So that Isaac didn't have to die for his sin.
00:15:57 --> 00:15:58 Now, for the modern mind,
00:15:59 --> 00:16:01 in our individualistic culture,
00:16:01 --> 00:16:05 this whole account here in Genesis 22 is primitive,
00:16:05 --> 00:16:07 and it's monstrous to us.
00:16:08 --> 00:16:10 The first objection that we tend to have
00:16:10 --> 00:16:13 is the fact that every single person
00:16:13 --> 00:16:16 is living wrongly and under judgment
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 and owes God a debt.
00:16:18 --> 00:16:20 Don't like that concept at all.
00:16:21 --> 00:16:23 Most of us have been marinating in
00:16:23 --> 00:16:25 and therefore bought into the notion
00:16:25 --> 00:16:27 that we live by our own standards,
00:16:28 --> 00:16:30 we determine what is right and wrong for us,
00:16:31 --> 00:16:34 and we do that either as an individual,
00:16:35 --> 00:16:36 we do that individualistically,
00:16:36 --> 00:16:38 or we do it as a family group,
00:16:38 --> 00:16:39 as a tribe.
00:16:40 --> 00:16:44 Now, if that is you,
00:16:44 --> 00:16:46 that is you're bought into that notion,
00:16:46 --> 00:16:47 and if you have bought into that notion,
00:16:48 --> 00:16:53 you've got to know that for the vast majority,
00:16:53 --> 00:16:55 and I mean, say, the vast majority,
00:16:55 --> 00:16:57 of human existence,
00:16:57 --> 00:16:59 no one has bought into that view.
00:17:00 --> 00:17:02 No cultural group has ever bought into that view
00:17:02 --> 00:17:02 for the vast majority.
00:17:02 --> 00:17:04 So it's only just a modern concept,
00:17:04 --> 00:17:07 modern formulated idea.
00:17:08 --> 00:17:10 But if that's you and you have bought into it,
00:17:10 --> 00:17:12 that there's no rights,
00:17:13 --> 00:17:13 no absolute morals,
00:17:14 --> 00:17:16 no right and wrong that I have to comply with,
00:17:16 --> 00:17:17 I live life my way,
00:17:18 --> 00:17:20 then I want you to imagine also
00:17:20 --> 00:17:22 that you have got attached around you
00:17:22 --> 00:17:25 a special recording device
00:17:25 --> 00:17:26 that records everything you think,
00:17:27 --> 00:17:28 you do,
00:17:28 --> 00:17:29 you say,
00:17:29 --> 00:17:32 24-7 for all of your life.
00:17:33 --> 00:17:36 Imagine that it particularly highlights
00:17:36 --> 00:17:38 every single moment
00:17:38 --> 00:17:40 when you declare
00:17:40 --> 00:17:42 how someone else ought to live.
00:17:43 --> 00:17:45 Every judgment that you have
00:17:45 --> 00:17:45 on another person
00:17:45 --> 00:17:47 because they're whatever else,
00:17:48 --> 00:17:49 they're not living up to the standards
00:17:49 --> 00:17:51 that you think that they should live up to.
00:17:51 --> 00:17:54 The standards ultimately
00:17:54 --> 00:17:55 that you say you live by
00:17:55 --> 00:17:57 that you're calling other people to live by.
00:17:59 --> 00:18:01 Imagine every one of those moments is recorded.
00:18:02 --> 00:18:03 If at the end of your life
00:18:03 --> 00:18:05 that device was attached and put there
00:18:05 --> 00:18:06 and we push record,
00:18:06 --> 00:18:07 we push play on it,
00:18:08 --> 00:18:09 let me tell you,
00:18:09 --> 00:18:11 there's not a single person
00:18:11 --> 00:18:13 who's ever lived on the face of the earth
00:18:13 --> 00:18:14 except Jesus Christ
00:18:14 --> 00:18:17 that can stand in that moment.
00:18:17 --> 00:18:19 Not a single person
00:18:19 --> 00:18:22 lives by the standards that they set.
00:18:23 --> 00:18:25 Not a single person.
00:18:28 --> 00:18:29 We can't even achieve
00:18:29 --> 00:18:31 our own standards in life.
00:18:33 --> 00:18:34 Our own moral goals.
00:18:37 --> 00:18:39 Leave the Ten Commandments out of it.
00:18:40 --> 00:18:42 Leave the golden rule out of it.
00:18:43 --> 00:18:45 None of us can even live by our own standards.
00:18:45 --> 00:18:47 Every single one of us is a hypocrite.
00:18:47 --> 00:18:50 To our own standards.
00:18:56 --> 00:18:57 None of us live properly.
00:18:59 --> 00:19:01 None of us can pass
00:19:01 --> 00:19:04 any form of moral evaluation of any sort,
00:19:05 --> 00:19:07 let alone that of a perfect God.
00:19:10 --> 00:19:11 The second objection
00:19:11 --> 00:19:13 is the idea,
00:19:13 --> 00:19:14 and again,
00:19:14 --> 00:19:16 a modern construct,
00:19:16 --> 00:19:18 that this idea of a debt
00:19:18 --> 00:19:19 that needs to be paid.
00:19:19 --> 00:19:21 We don't like that idea.
00:19:22 --> 00:19:23 The modern construct of God,
00:19:23 --> 00:19:24 if he exists,
00:19:24 --> 00:19:26 is that if he's in the business,
00:19:26 --> 00:19:27 if God does exist,
00:19:27 --> 00:19:28 his business is to love people
00:19:28 --> 00:19:30 and his business is to forgive people.
00:19:30 --> 00:19:30 Shouldn't,
00:19:30 --> 00:19:31 if he's God
00:19:31 --> 00:19:32 and he's so perfect
00:19:32 --> 00:19:33 and he's so great,
00:19:33 --> 00:19:34 shouldn't he just forgive people?
00:19:35 --> 00:19:36 Just wipe the debt clean?
00:19:36 --> 00:19:40 And so again,
00:19:40 --> 00:19:41 I have to ask you,
00:19:41 --> 00:19:42 if that's your view of God,
00:19:43 --> 00:19:44 that's your view of life,
00:19:45 --> 00:19:49 where in life are debts ever just wished away?
00:19:50 --> 00:19:50 Where?
00:19:51 --> 00:19:54 Where are debts ever in life just wished away?
00:19:54 --> 00:19:57 When someone wrongs us,
00:19:57 --> 00:19:58 a debt is established.
00:19:59 --> 00:20:01 If you take my phone
00:20:01 --> 00:20:04 and you hit it with a hammer right now
00:20:04 --> 00:20:05 and destroy it,
00:20:05 --> 00:20:07 a debt has been established.
00:20:09 --> 00:20:11 There's a value attached to this phone,
00:20:11 --> 00:20:11 you know,
00:20:12 --> 00:20:12 seven,
00:20:12 --> 00:20:13 eight hundred dollars,
00:20:13 --> 00:20:13 whatever it is,
00:20:14 --> 00:20:16 and there's only two options.
00:20:16 --> 00:20:17 If you take it and smash it,
00:20:17 --> 00:20:19 there's only two options available.
00:20:19 --> 00:20:19 Well,
00:20:20 --> 00:20:22 you pay the debt
00:20:22 --> 00:20:24 or I pay the debt.
00:20:25 --> 00:20:26 That's the only option.
00:20:27 --> 00:20:28 I either say,
00:20:28 --> 00:20:29 well,
00:20:29 --> 00:20:30 that's eight hundred dollars,
00:20:31 --> 00:20:31 please,
00:20:31 --> 00:20:33 or I say,
00:20:33 --> 00:20:34 I forgive you
00:20:34 --> 00:20:37 and release you from the debt.
00:20:38 --> 00:20:40 But the moment I
00:20:40 --> 00:20:43 say I forgive you,
00:20:44 --> 00:20:45 in that moment,
00:20:45 --> 00:20:47 I choose to pay the debt.
00:20:47 --> 00:20:49 The debt doesn't just disappear.
00:20:49 --> 00:20:50 The value of the phone
00:20:50 --> 00:20:51 doesn't just go
00:20:51 --> 00:20:54 into wherever the internet is.
00:20:55 --> 00:20:56 It doesn't just go.
00:20:57 --> 00:20:58 It's still there.
00:21:00 --> 00:21:01 Someone has to pay the debt.
00:21:03 --> 00:21:04 Either you
00:21:04 --> 00:21:05 or me.
00:21:09 --> 00:21:11 If I choose to forgive you
00:21:11 --> 00:21:15 so that you do not have to repay me for this,
00:21:15 --> 00:21:18 I have to pay for it.
00:21:18 --> 00:21:20 I either pay for it
00:21:20 --> 00:21:22 by going and buying a brand new one
00:21:22 --> 00:21:23 and therefore the value of it
00:21:23 --> 00:21:24 is costly to me
00:21:24 --> 00:21:27 or I pay for it
00:21:27 --> 00:21:29 by buying a Nokia
00:21:29 --> 00:21:33 or carrier pigeons
00:21:33 --> 00:21:34 or something,
00:21:34 --> 00:21:35 do something different.
00:21:36 --> 00:21:37 In one way or another,
00:21:37 --> 00:21:38 I pay for the debt.
00:21:39 --> 00:21:39 That is,
00:21:40 --> 00:21:42 you pay for the debt
00:21:42 --> 00:21:44 or I absorb the debt myself.
00:21:45 --> 00:21:46 It's one or the other.
00:21:47 --> 00:21:49 This happens on every area of life.
00:21:50 --> 00:21:51 If someone robs us
00:21:51 --> 00:21:52 of an opportunity
00:21:52 --> 00:21:53 or of happiness
00:21:53 --> 00:21:53 or reputation
00:21:53 --> 00:21:55 or something else,
00:21:55 --> 00:21:56 what happens in that moment
00:21:56 --> 00:21:57 is a debt is accrued.
00:21:57 --> 00:21:59 A sense of a debt
00:21:59 --> 00:22:00 is accrued.
00:22:01 --> 00:22:02 Justice has been violated
00:22:02 --> 00:22:03 and a debt
00:22:03 --> 00:22:04 has been accrued.
00:22:04 --> 00:22:05 And there are only two choices
00:22:05 --> 00:22:06 in that moment.
00:22:06 --> 00:22:08 You can make them pay
00:22:08 --> 00:22:11 by destroying their opportunities
00:22:11 --> 00:22:13 and ruining their reputation
00:22:13 --> 00:22:15 or you can forgive them.
00:22:16 --> 00:22:19 But forgiveness is agony.
00:22:21 --> 00:22:22 Forgiveness is agony
00:22:22 --> 00:22:25 because you choose in that moment
00:22:25 --> 00:22:29 to absorb that debt yourself.
00:22:29 --> 00:22:32 You don't attempt
00:22:32 --> 00:22:34 to get your reputation back
00:22:34 --> 00:22:35 by tearing down
00:22:35 --> 00:22:36 their reputation
00:22:36 --> 00:22:39 or getting your opportunities back
00:22:39 --> 00:22:41 by ruining their opportunities.
00:22:42 --> 00:22:42 Forgiveness
00:22:42 --> 00:22:46 always requires suffering.
00:22:47 --> 00:22:49 Always requires suffering.
00:22:51 --> 00:22:53 And when you don't
00:22:53 --> 00:22:54 forgive forgiveness,
