00:01:19 --> 00:01:27 let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve. If it is teaching,
00:01:27 --> 00:01:36 let him teach. If it is encouraging, let him encourage. If it is contributing to the needs of
00:01:36 --> 00:01:45 others, let him give generously. If it is leadership, let him govern diligently. If it is showing mercy,
00:01:45 --> 00:01:49 let him do it cheerfully. This is the word of the Lord.
00:01:49 --> 00:01:50 Thank you, Lord.
00:01:50 --> 00:02:02 Lord Jesus, we thank you that you have come amongst us as a man, the creator God of the universe,
00:02:02 --> 00:02:08 and we thank you that you have laid down your life for our sins, and we thank you that in power your
00:02:08 --> 00:02:15 Father has raised you to life, never to die again. And we pray, Lord, that as we come to your word now,
00:02:15 --> 00:02:21 that we would sit under your lordship, that we would marvel at who you are, that we would be in
00:02:21 --> 00:02:25 submission to you, and that each one of us, Lord, that you would be leading us in your truth and
00:02:25 --> 00:02:32 growing us in Christ from the place where we are. Meet us in your word now, speak to us powerfully by
00:02:32 --> 00:02:36 your spirit, and we pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:44 Some of you will have seen Peter Jensen, our Archbishop on Q&A on the ABC last Monday night. You can see it
00:02:44 --> 00:02:50 online if you missed it. He engaged in a very difficult debate with one woman in particular who
00:02:50 --> 00:03:00 unashamedly declared herself atheist. And it was an intimidating struggle between outspoken unbelief and
00:03:00 --> 00:03:09 unapologetic faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. And it wasn't merely a battle of intellect and reason, it was a
00:03:09 --> 00:03:16 spiritual battle that required considerable grace and wisdom in seeking a hearing on issues where people were
00:03:16 --> 00:03:27 not eager to listen. Sam preached on Romans 1 a few weeks ago, and he showed us that when we reject God, we choose a
00:03:27 --> 00:03:33 miserable path which is deathly. So Romans chapter 128 says,
00:03:33 --> 00:03:41 furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a
00:03:41 --> 00:03:50 depraved mind to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed,
00:03:50 --> 00:04:00 and depravity. They're full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters,
00:04:00 --> 00:04:09 insolent, arrogant, boastful. And they invent ways of doing evil. They disobey their parents. They're senseless,
00:04:09 --> 00:04:16 faithless, heartless, heartless, ruthless. And although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such
00:04:16 --> 00:04:24 things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things, but also to approve of those who
00:04:24 --> 00:04:37 practice them. And it defies reason. People will choose death over life. And in this bizarre manifestation of
00:04:37 --> 00:04:43 evil, that people actually get comfort of taking other people to death with them.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:58 We've had a great time in Romans. It explains God's gospel in the most magnificent way, and it's God's
00:04:58 --> 00:05:06 response to our deathly situation. The first eight chapters address many issues, God's anger with people,
00:05:06 --> 00:05:14 with men and women, why his judgment is just, why trying to keep the Ten Commandments and the rest of
00:05:14 --> 00:05:21 the Old Testament law can't make us good enough for God. It tells us why faith pleases God and how true
00:05:21 --> 00:05:29 peace and joy come through faith in Jesus Christ. Helps us to make sense of our ongoing struggle with sin.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:39 And then in chapter 8, verse 1, this magnificent expression of God's mercy, that there is now no
00:05:39 --> 00:05:47 condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. And at the end of chapter 8, verse 39, that nothing,
00:05:47 --> 00:05:52 nothing at all in the entire universe is able to separate us from the love of Christ Jesus.
00:05:52 --> 00:06:00 And so in Christ, we have received extraordinary mercy from God.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:09 Chapters 9 to 11, they're a bit different, they're really substantial, but they're like an excursus or an
00:06:09 --> 00:06:17 excursion into the place of the Jews in God's plan of salvation. But chapter 12 brings us to where I'm
00:06:17 --> 00:06:22 preaching today and it begins with these words. And I'm not going to get past these two verses.
00:06:23 --> 00:06:31 Therefore, I urge you brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices,
00:06:32 --> 00:06:39 holy and pleasing to God. This is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the
00:06:39 --> 00:06:45 pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, and then you will be able to
00:06:45 --> 00:06:52 test and approve what God's will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will. I heard the great
00:06:52 --> 00:06:57 British Bible teacher, John Stott, preach on this passage. In my early days of being a believer,
00:06:57 --> 00:07:01 he spoke to an Easter service at the University of New South Wales just before the Billy Graham
00:07:01 --> 00:07:09 crusade in 1979. And he explained that the therefore is a terribly important little word,
00:07:09 --> 00:07:15 it's a turning point in the letter, it is a hinge. Everything that's gone before in Romans links now to
00:07:15 --> 00:07:21 what follows. It's where the rubber hits the road. We move from theory to practice, from what the good
00:07:21 --> 00:07:27 news is to how the good news transforms the lives of people who believe the gospel.
00:07:27 --> 00:07:35 God's action brings transformation. And so he says,
00:07:35 --> 00:07:41 therefore I urge you, brethren, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices,
00:07:42 --> 00:07:47 holy and pleasing to God, which is your spiritual act of worship. That's the NIV.
00:07:47 --> 00:08:00 God's disposition towards us, God's disposition towards people is one of mercy. And it's a particular
00:08:00 --> 00:08:07 type of mercy, it's gut-wrenching pity and compassion. God knows the predicament that we're in,
00:08:09 --> 00:08:14 he knows our predicament better than we see it for ourselves and he responds to it with his gut-wrenching
00:08:14 --> 00:08:24 pity and compassion. I actually think chapter 12 verse 1 picks up from Romans 8, 38, 39.
00:08:25 --> 00:08:33 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present
00:08:33 --> 00:08:40 nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything in all creation will be able
00:08:40 --> 00:08:48 to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. So the first eight chapters
00:08:48 --> 00:08:58 of Romans reach this crescendo in the unquenchable love of God which is shown to his people.
00:08:59 --> 00:09:06 And it's the most amazing thing that God loves his creation and his heart goes out in pity
00:09:06 --> 00:09:21 and compassion to his people. And then he says to us, in view of God's love, in view of God's mercy,
00:09:21 --> 00:09:29 in view of God's compassion, offer yourselves, offer your bodies as living sacrifices.
00:09:29 --> 00:09:37 Now the people he's writing to are very familiar with animal sacrifices. They wouldn't have been
00:09:37 --> 00:09:42 shocked by some of the animal videos on our television when animals are slaughtered in Indonesia
00:09:42 --> 00:09:49 and other places. Whether it was the temple in Jerusalem or the meat markets in Rome, animals
00:09:49 --> 00:09:57 were slaughtered ritually and in the name of their God all the time. People saw animals killed,
00:09:57 --> 00:10:05 they saw where their food came from. And people were also used to the idea of substitution,
00:10:06 --> 00:10:18 an animal sacrificed in place of you. Not a bad deal. Not such a great life to be a sacrificial
00:10:18 --> 00:10:27 animal. You don't choose to be a sacrifice. Someone chooses you. Your body is put on the line
00:10:27 --> 00:10:34 for others. Your throat is cut and your body is burnt. The animal dies a death representative
00:10:34 --> 00:10:44 of the death that we deserve. Romans chapter 5 and 8 speak about Jesus' death as a sacrifice.
00:10:44 --> 00:10:46 In chapter 8 verse 3 it says,
00:10:46 --> 00:10:53 For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did
00:10:53 --> 00:11:00 by sending his own son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering.
00:11:02 --> 00:11:08 And Romans 12 verse 1 tells us that the only appropriate response to what God has done
00:11:08 --> 00:11:21 is to become a sacrifice. Fortunately for us it's a living sacrifice. It's a whole of life commitment.
00:11:24 --> 00:11:31 I urge you brothers in view of God's mercy to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and
00:11:31 --> 00:11:36 pleasing to God. This is your spiritual act of worship.
00:11:39 --> 00:11:42 When I became a believer I was 18, about to turn 19.
00:11:44 --> 00:11:46 And I was already attending church.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:52 And within a few months of coming to Christ I joined a group that met in a friend's house.
00:11:52 --> 00:12:19 two-bedroom cottage, fibro cottage.
00:12:19 --> 00:12:21 Hardly a small group.
00:12:23 --> 00:12:26 And we worked through Luke's gospel verse by verse for a year.
00:12:28 --> 00:12:31 The groove was quite a contrast to church.
00:12:33 --> 00:12:35 We had a loving pastor
00:12:35 --> 00:12:38 dressed in black, just like Brian was this morning.
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 See Brian this morning?
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 Full collar, boy.
00:12:43 --> 00:12:43 And
00:12:43 --> 00:12:48 he smoked a pipe
00:12:48 --> 00:12:50 He was known as Puffing Billy.
00:12:53 --> 00:12:56 But he was absolutely committed to seeing people saved.
00:12:58 --> 00:13:00 And at the same time he was very stern.
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 He was formal.
00:13:03 --> 00:13:05 He was a pretty lousy preacher.
00:13:07 --> 00:13:09 We had a sung robed choir.
00:13:11 --> 00:13:14 Members walked in every Sunday night at 7.15
00:13:14 --> 00:13:16 wearing their academic hoods.
00:13:17 --> 00:13:19 We had boring sermons.
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 Chanted responses.
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 I liked going
00:13:24 --> 00:13:26 but I grew
00:13:26 --> 00:13:29 and was nurtured in the house church.
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 The leaders loved Jesus
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 and his word.
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 And they were
00:13:35 --> 00:13:38 really careful to try to teach it truthfully.
00:13:38 --> 00:13:40 and they worked hard at submitting
00:13:40 --> 00:13:42 to what they were learning.
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 And so for me
00:13:45 --> 00:13:45 in the same place
00:13:45 --> 00:13:47 two very different
00:13:47 --> 00:13:49 experiences of Christians
00:13:49 --> 00:13:50 gathering to worship.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 In the house church
00:13:53 --> 00:13:55 we began to study
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 this passage in Romans.
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 This is year two.
00:13:57 --> 00:13:58 Year one was Luke.
00:13:58 --> 00:13:59 Year two was Romans.
00:13:59 --> 00:13:59 Took us all year.
00:13:59 --> 00:14:03 And we got to chapter 12
00:14:03 --> 00:14:03 verse 1
00:14:03 --> 00:14:05 Therefore I urge you brethren
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 in view of God's mercy
00:14:06 --> 00:14:09 to offer your bodies
00:14:09 --> 00:14:10 as living sacrifices
00:14:10 --> 00:14:12 holy and pleasing to God
00:14:12 --> 00:14:14 this is your spiritual act of worship.
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 And it was really difficult for me
00:14:18 --> 00:14:20 because I had been taught
00:14:20 --> 00:14:22 that worship was what you did on Sunday
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 and you might have been taught that too.
00:14:26 --> 00:14:28 Some of our younger people
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 may well just think
00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 that worship is singing
00:14:30 --> 00:14:32 because it's used like that as well.
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 But this passage
00:14:38 --> 00:14:40 that we are in this morning
00:14:40 --> 00:14:42 talks about the whole of life
00:14:42 --> 00:14:43 as worship.
00:14:43 --> 00:14:44 Everything that we do
00:14:44 --> 00:14:45 whether we're here in church
00:14:45 --> 00:14:46 this morning
00:14:46 --> 00:14:47 or outside somewhere
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 through the week
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 everything that we do
00:14:49 --> 00:14:50 is a response
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 to who God is.
00:14:54 --> 00:14:55 And I remember
00:14:55 --> 00:14:56 going to the rector
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 to talk about it
00:14:57 --> 00:14:58 because I was confused
00:14:58 --> 00:15:00 and it threw it up for me
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 and he said to me
00:15:01 --> 00:15:02 don't worry about it my boy
00:15:02 --> 00:15:05 church on Sunday
00:15:05 --> 00:15:06 is true worship.
00:15:07 --> 00:15:08 All these other groups
00:15:08 --> 00:15:08 well they're
00:15:08 --> 00:15:08 then things
00:15:08 --> 00:15:09 they're okay
00:15:09 --> 00:15:10 but they're not true worship.
00:15:11 --> 00:15:12 Church on Sunday
00:15:12 --> 00:15:13 is where you need to be.
00:15:13 --> 00:15:14 Well of course you need to be
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 at church on Sunday
00:15:15 --> 00:15:15 it's a great place
00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 to gather with God's people
00:15:16 --> 00:15:18 and encourage one another.
00:15:22 --> 00:15:24 And I've spent a lot of time
00:15:24 --> 00:15:24 wrestling with that
00:15:24 --> 00:15:25 over the years.
00:15:25 --> 00:15:26 I gave you verbatim
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 of what he said.
00:15:29 --> 00:15:30 I loved him
00:15:30 --> 00:15:32 and he's with the Lord now
00:15:32 --> 00:15:33 but I think he was wrong
00:15:33 --> 00:15:34 and I think he was wrong
00:15:34 --> 00:15:35 in two ways.
00:15:38 --> 00:15:39 Both those gatherings
00:15:39 --> 00:15:41 of Christ's church
00:15:41 --> 00:15:42 were true
00:15:42 --> 00:15:43 and valid expressions
00:15:43 --> 00:15:44 of devotion
00:15:44 --> 00:15:45 to Jesus.
00:15:47 --> 00:15:48 One of them
00:15:48 --> 00:15:50 was very formal
00:15:50 --> 00:15:52 and the other
00:15:52 --> 00:15:54 was very informal.
00:15:56 --> 00:15:57 Both involved
00:15:57 --> 00:15:57 believers
00:15:57 --> 00:15:58 coming together
00:15:58 --> 00:15:59 to encourage
00:15:59 --> 00:16:00 each other
00:16:00 --> 00:16:00 in Christ
00:16:00 --> 00:16:02 and learn from his word
00:16:02 --> 00:16:04 both involved
00:16:04 --> 00:16:04 worship
00:16:04 --> 00:16:06 or service.
00:16:10 --> 00:16:12 And the second error
00:16:12 --> 00:16:14 is to define
00:16:14 --> 00:16:15 worship narrowly
00:16:15 --> 00:16:16 as merely
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 coming to church
00:16:17 --> 00:16:17 on Sunday.
00:16:17 --> 00:16:22 and a group
00:16:22 --> 00:16:22 or two
00:16:22 --> 00:16:23 through the week.
00:16:26 --> 00:16:28 Romans chapter 12
00:16:28 --> 00:16:29 verse 1
00:16:29 --> 00:16:29 says it is
00:16:29 --> 00:16:30 a whole of life
00:16:30 --> 00:16:30 commitment
00:16:30 --> 00:16:31 a whole of life
00:16:31 --> 00:16:33 response to Christ
00:16:33 --> 00:16:33 a whole of life
00:16:33 --> 00:16:35 response to the gospel.
00:16:38 --> 00:16:40 And listen to the force
00:16:40 --> 00:16:40 of these words
00:16:40 --> 00:16:41 I urge you
00:16:41 --> 00:16:42 I implore you
00:16:42 --> 00:16:45 the great apostle
00:16:45 --> 00:16:46 pushes his point
00:16:46 --> 00:16:46 to the max
00:16:46 --> 00:16:48 in view of God's mercy
00:16:48 --> 00:16:49 in view of God's gospel
00:16:49 --> 00:16:51 in view of Romans
00:16:51 --> 00:16:52 chapter 1
00:16:52 --> 00:16:53 to Romans chapter 11
00:16:53 --> 00:16:55 in view of what God
00:16:55 --> 00:16:55 has done
00:16:55 --> 00:16:57 we must respond.
00:16:59 --> 00:17:01 He has brought us

00:17:19 --> 00:17:20 on our hate
00:17:20 --> 00:17:21 everything that
00:17:21 --> 00:17:22 gets in the way

00:17:40 --> 00:17:41 who is humble
00:17:41 --> 00:17:42 enough to listen
00:17:42 --> 00:17:43 and to respond
00:17:43 --> 00:17:45 absolutely liberating
00:17:45 --> 00:17:46 God deals with
00:17:46 --> 00:17:47 our sins
00:17:47 --> 00:17:48 he sets us free.

00:29:47 --> 00:29:48 transformation begins

00:30:30 --> 00:30:33 sisters in view of
00:30:33 --> 00:30:35 God's mercy to
00:30:35 --> 00:30:35 offer your bodies
00:30:35 --> 00:30:37 as living sacrifices
00:30:37 --> 00:30:38 holy and pleasing to
00:30:38 --> 00:30:40 God this is your
00:30:40 --> 00:30:42 logical act of
00:30:42 --> 00:30:45 worship do not
00:30:45 --> 00:30:46 conform any longer

00:31:25 --> 00:31:26 no condemnation for
00:31:26 --> 00:31:27 those who are in
00:31:27 --> 00:31:29 Christ Jesus and what
00:31:29 --> 00:31:31 that means is we stand
00:31:31 --> 00:31:32 under the mercy of God
00:31:32 --> 00:31:33 the judge of all the
00:31:33 --> 00:31:34 earth has taken
00:31:34 --> 00:31:36 condemnation right away
00:31:36 --> 00:31:37 from us and we have
00:31:37 --> 00:31:38 this magnificent
00:31:38 --> 00:31:39 experience of his
00:31:39 --> 00:31:41 mercy and we are told
00:31:41 --> 00:31:42 that nothing can
00:31:42 --> 00:31:43 separate us from the
00:31:43 --> 00:31:44 love of Christ which is
00:31:44 --> 00:31:45 in Christ Jesus our
00:31:45 --> 00:31:49 Lord we are
00:31:49 --> 00:31:51 recipients of
00:31:51 --> 00:31:53 phenomenal mercy
00:31:53 --> 00:31:56 mercy and so you get
00:31:56 --> 00:31:58 the 12 one in view of
00:31:58 --> 00:32:00 this mercy in view of
00:32:00 --> 00:32:02 God's mercy live for
00:32:02 --> 00:32:06 Christ your whole life

00:32:20 --> 00:32:21 the greatest things that

00:32:22 --> 00:32:24 experience of mercy from
00:32:24 --> 00:32:25 God's hand towards
00:32:25 --> 00:32:28 ourselves and he has
00:32:28 --> 00:32:29 put in our hands the
00:32:29 --> 00:32:31 ability to extend
00:32:31 --> 00:32:34 undeserved mercy in all
00:32:34 --> 00:32:36 sorts of relationships that
00:32:36 --> 00:32:37 we find ourselves in and
00:32:37 --> 00:32:39 I want to say let's begin
00:32:39 --> 00:32:40 at home
00:32:40 --> 00:32:43 in the relationships which
00:32:43 --> 00:32:46 are closest to us but
00:32:46 --> 00:32:47 move out from there
00:32:47 --> 00:32:47 because we know that in
00:32:47 --> 00:32:50 our families sometimes we
00:32:50 --> 00:32:51 carry deep hurt and
00:32:51 --> 00:32:52 wounds whether it be our
00:32:52 --> 00:32:53 immediate family or
00:32:53 --> 00:32:54 families which are a bit
00:32:54 --> 00:32:56 further out God has
00:32:56 --> 00:32:58 given us in Christ the
00:32:58 --> 00:33:00 tools to be full of
00:33:00 --> 00:33:03 mercy to one another just
00:33:03 --> 00:33:04 as we have received it for
00:33:04 --> 00:33:06 ourselves in Christ
00:33:06 --> 00:33:11 let's pray Lord Jesus we
00:33:11 --> 00:33:12 pray that you would help
00:33:12 --> 00:33:16 help us to see our whole
00:33:16 --> 00:33:22 life as yours and we do
00:33:22 --> 00:33:25 struggle with sin in this
00:33:25 --> 00:33:28 age with weakness and
00:33:28 --> 00:33:31 failure and sometimes grave
00:33:31 --> 00:33:35 error in our own lives but we
00:33:35 --> 00:33:37 experience it Lord in the hope
00:33:37 --> 00:33:39 of the enormous mercy that you
00:33:39 --> 00:33:42 have shown us in Christ and we
00:33:42 --> 00:33:44 pray that just as you are
00:33:44 --> 00:33:46 transforming us that we would
00:33:46 --> 00:33:49 be transformed in the way that
00:33:49 --> 00:33:51 we relate to those around us
00:33:51 --> 00:33:55 especially to those who are near
00:33:55 --> 00:33:57 us in Christ even within our own
00:33:57 --> 00:34:01 families please transform us Lord
00:34:01 --> 00:34:03 Jesus individually and corporately
00:34:03 --> 00:34:06 as the people of God that your
00:34:06 --> 00:34:08 name would be glorified in
00:34:08 --> 00:34:11 everything we do and we pray
00:34:11 --> 00:34:12 this in Jesus precious name
