00:00:16 --> 00:00:20 Our Father and our God, we do indeed give you great thanks and praise
00:00:20 --> 00:00:22 that you are a God who is perfect.
00:00:22 --> 00:00:24 You are a God who has answers.
00:00:25 --> 00:00:27 You are a God who saves his people.
00:00:27 --> 00:00:32 You are a God who pours out love and mercy to your people.
00:00:33 --> 00:00:38 Father, please help us now to understand the message that you would wish for us
00:00:38 --> 00:00:41 to hear this morning from these amazing passages.
00:00:41 --> 00:00:43 In Jesus' name, amen.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:51 Well, we have come to our second last message here in Esther
00:00:51 --> 00:00:57 and we have heard about four interesting characters.
00:00:57 --> 00:01:06 King Xerxes, whose character is extremely questionable, is obsessed with himself.
00:01:07 --> 00:01:10 Queen Esther, we know she's beautiful.
00:01:11 --> 00:01:21 She has kept her Jewish heritage private and along with the fact that her life is in danger,
00:01:21 --> 00:01:29 so is the life or lives of all the other Jews and they are threatened with annihilation.
00:01:30 --> 00:01:39 Mordecai, he's of the Jewish family of Esther and he's the guy who refused to bow down to Haman
00:01:39 --> 00:01:46 and seemingly has started and caused this problem that we have right at this moment in time.
00:01:47 --> 00:01:57 And Haman himself, the man obsessed with hatred that comes from his ancestor King Agag
00:01:57 --> 00:02:01 that we learnt about some weeks back, the king of the Amalekites.
00:02:01 --> 00:02:06 And Haman is the guy who we learnt last week who is filled with pride
00:02:06 --> 00:02:13 and whose plans are not just to see the death of Mordecai,
00:02:13 --> 00:02:17 but to see the whole Jewish race annihilated.
00:02:18 --> 00:02:23 Now, it's not difficult to dislike Haman.
00:02:23 --> 00:02:29 And it is easy to wish for poetic justice.
00:02:30 --> 00:02:33 Now, poetic justice is a literary term.
00:02:34 --> 00:02:40 It's what every good book and every good movie has.
00:02:40 --> 00:02:41 You know what I mean.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:47 There's good characters and there's bad characters, evil characters,
00:02:47 --> 00:02:53 and all along it looks as if the evil characters are going to win.
00:02:55 --> 00:03:04 And yet the author uses the evil characters to somehow turn the tables
00:03:04 --> 00:03:09 and the evil characters receive the punishment that they deserve.
00:03:10 --> 00:03:15 We would say they got their just desserts.
00:03:15 --> 00:03:19 Now, poetic justice happens all throughout life.
00:03:20 --> 00:03:26 We often want to see the tables turned for good to win over evil.
00:03:27 --> 00:03:33 But poetic justice leaves things a little unresolved.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:42 The grief of a family when a member of their family is killed by a mad gunman,
00:03:42 --> 00:03:44 and we only just have to look at recent news,
00:03:45 --> 00:03:48 they are still left in grief,
00:03:49 --> 00:03:53 even though the gunman gets the punishment
00:03:53 --> 00:03:56 and is sent to jail for a long time.
00:03:57 --> 00:04:01 The punishment doesn't bring back the one who was shot.
00:04:02 --> 00:04:05 There is still something unresolved,
00:04:05 --> 00:04:09 even though the gunman is actually punished.
00:04:09 --> 00:04:13 Now, in chapters 7 and 8 of Esther,
00:04:14 --> 00:04:17 we see perfect justice.
00:04:18 --> 00:04:22 Yes, there is poetic justice through this story.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:29 Yes, Haman dies on the very gallows that were meant for Mordecai,
00:04:29 --> 00:04:37 and the people of God have their lives saved by a reversal of the death edict.
00:04:38 --> 00:04:45 But there's more for us to see in relation to God's perfect justice.
00:04:45 --> 00:04:51 You see, commonly, poetic justice has something missing.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:55 But in God's perfect justice,
00:04:56 --> 00:05:00 he writes the wrongs fully and completely.
00:05:01 --> 00:05:03 Nothing is missing.
00:05:04 --> 00:05:09 Now, there are four points that we can learn from God's perfect justice
00:05:09 --> 00:05:11 from these two chapters.
00:05:11 --> 00:05:13 We didn't read chapter 8,
00:05:13 --> 00:05:15 but we'll get to that.
00:05:16 --> 00:05:18 There's two points in chapter 7,
00:05:19 --> 00:05:20 and there's two in chapter 8.
00:05:21 --> 00:05:23 In God's perfect justice,
00:05:23 --> 00:05:25 there is perfect knowledge,
00:05:25 --> 00:05:27 there is perfect judgment,
00:05:28 --> 00:05:30 there is perfect reward,
00:05:31 --> 00:05:33 and there is perfect joy.
00:05:33 --> 00:05:35 First of all,
00:05:35 --> 00:05:37 in perfect justice,
00:05:37 --> 00:05:39 there is perfect knowledge.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:43 Any justice that we see in this world
00:05:43 --> 00:05:45 isn't perfect
00:05:45 --> 00:05:49 because no human has all the information
00:05:49 --> 00:05:52 or knowledge of another person.
00:05:53 --> 00:05:56 There are many secrets that are hidden.
00:05:57 --> 00:06:01 And we see this happen in Esther chapter 7,
00:06:01 --> 00:06:03 in the first six verses,
00:06:03 --> 00:06:06 especially look with me at verses 3 and 4.
00:06:07 --> 00:06:09 Having been asked again
00:06:09 --> 00:06:14 what the queen's request is by the king,
00:06:14 --> 00:06:17 the queen, Queen Esther, answers,
00:06:17 --> 00:06:21 if I have found favour with you, your majesty,
00:06:21 --> 00:06:23 and if it pleases you,
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 grant me my life,
00:06:25 --> 00:06:26 this is my petition,
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 and spare my people,
00:06:29 --> 00:06:31 this is my request.
00:06:31 --> 00:06:34 For I and my people
00:06:34 --> 00:06:37 have been sold to be destroyed,
00:06:37 --> 00:06:39 killed and annihilated.
00:06:39 --> 00:06:41 If we had merely been sold
00:06:41 --> 00:06:43 as male and female slaves,
00:06:43 --> 00:06:46 I would have kept quiet
00:06:46 --> 00:06:48 because no such distress
00:06:48 --> 00:06:51 would justify disturbing the king.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:54 She knows how to speak to this king,
00:06:54 --> 00:06:54 doesn't she?
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 She's very clever.
00:06:56 --> 00:07:00 Esther reveals her concern
00:07:00 --> 00:07:02 for her own life and her people.
00:07:03 --> 00:07:05 Remember, no one knows
00:07:05 --> 00:07:07 that she is a Jew at this stage,
00:07:07 --> 00:07:09 not even her husband, the king.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:13 All knowledge of the problem
00:07:13 --> 00:07:15 is not revealed straight away,
00:07:16 --> 00:07:18 nor does she make it clear
00:07:18 --> 00:07:20 that it is the edict
00:07:20 --> 00:07:23 that Haman actually put together
00:07:23 --> 00:07:25 and that the king actually signed
00:07:25 --> 00:07:27 is the main problem.
00:07:28 --> 00:07:30 And note her comments,
00:07:30 --> 00:07:31 in her comments,
00:07:31 --> 00:07:34 she is using the same wording
00:07:34 --> 00:07:36 that is in the decree
00:07:36 --> 00:07:38 that Haman wrote
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 and the king signed.
00:07:39 --> 00:07:42 Now, understandably,
00:07:43 --> 00:07:45 this king asks,
00:07:46 --> 00:07:48 who has done such a thing?
00:07:51 --> 00:07:53 Now, you could imagine Haman.
00:07:54 --> 00:07:56 Haman would be getting
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 a little worried
00:07:57 --> 00:07:59 as he's listening to the king,
00:07:59 --> 00:08:01 sitting there at the banquet,
00:08:01 --> 00:08:03 feeling like he's a special guest,
00:08:03 --> 00:08:05 and he hears the queen
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 speaking this way.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:09 Things haven't been going well
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 for Haman, remember.
00:08:11 --> 00:08:13 He has just come in from outside.
00:08:13 --> 00:08:16 He's actually had to be humiliated
00:08:16 --> 00:08:19 by parading around the city
00:08:19 --> 00:08:21 with Mordecai being honoured,
00:08:21 --> 00:08:25 the very person who he hates.
00:08:28 --> 00:08:32 Now, Esther reveals the adversary.
00:08:32 --> 00:08:35 It's this wicked Haman.
00:08:36 --> 00:08:39 This wicked Haman is out to kill her,
00:08:39 --> 00:08:42 the queen of all people.
00:08:43 --> 00:08:46 Now, does the king realise
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 it's the edict
00:08:47 --> 00:08:49 that Esther is referring to?
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 Maybe not.
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 Now, we have seen,
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 we think maybe not,
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 and the commentators think maybe not,
00:08:57 --> 00:08:59 because we have seen the king
00:08:59 --> 00:09:02 be very slow and lacking thought
00:09:02 --> 00:09:03 throughout all of Esther.
00:09:03 --> 00:09:06 So nothing makes us think
00:09:06 --> 00:09:09 that he's putting all the dots together.
00:09:10 --> 00:09:12 The knowledge shared here
00:09:12 --> 00:09:15 is not complete.
00:09:16 --> 00:09:18 Esther doesn't tell the whole story.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:22 But in God's justice,
00:09:22 --> 00:09:25 all things will be revealed
00:09:25 --> 00:09:28 because perfect justice
00:09:28 --> 00:09:30 has perfect knowledge.
00:09:32 --> 00:09:34 If you can imagine a judge
00:09:34 --> 00:09:36 in one of our courts
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 making decisions
00:09:37 --> 00:09:41 on what he or she sees before them,
00:09:42 --> 00:09:44 the judge doesn't know the heart
00:09:44 --> 00:09:47 of the person in front of them,
00:09:48 --> 00:09:50 doesn't know the motives,
00:09:51 --> 00:09:52 the judge doesn't know
00:09:52 --> 00:09:55 if the witness is lying or not,
00:09:55 --> 00:09:58 and so cannot really make
00:09:58 --> 00:10:00 a perfect judgment.
00:10:01 --> 00:10:03 We'll do the best he or she can,
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 but it won't ever be perfect.
00:10:05 --> 00:10:08 A judgment will be made perfect,
00:10:09 --> 00:10:10 will be made,
00:10:10 --> 00:10:12 but it won't be that perfect
00:10:12 --> 00:10:15 because a judge cannot have
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 perfect knowledge.
00:10:17 --> 00:10:18 But our God
00:10:18 --> 00:10:21 can make a perfect judgment
00:10:21 --> 00:10:23 because all things
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 will be revealed
00:10:24 --> 00:10:26 on the day of judgment.
00:10:27 --> 00:10:29 Revelation tells us
00:10:29 --> 00:10:31 that when Jesus returns,
00:10:32 --> 00:10:34 the books will be opened
00:10:34 --> 00:10:36 and every wrong
00:10:36 --> 00:10:38 and every right
00:10:38 --> 00:10:40 that we have ever done
00:10:40 --> 00:10:43 will be totally exposed
00:10:43 --> 00:10:46 and all will be revealed.
00:10:49 --> 00:10:51 Now, unless our wrongs,
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 our sins,
00:10:53 --> 00:10:55 are covered somehow,
00:10:56 --> 00:10:57 we,
00:10:57 --> 00:10:58 every one of us
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 in this room
00:10:59 --> 00:11:01 is in great trouble.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:04 God's justice
00:11:04 --> 00:11:06 is perfect justice.
00:11:06 --> 00:11:09 He has perfect knowledge.
00:11:10 --> 00:11:12 Nothing is hidden from him.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:14 Even though we can hide
00:11:14 --> 00:11:16 a huge amount from each other,
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 nothing is hidden from God.
00:11:19 --> 00:11:21 God's perfect justice
00:11:21 --> 00:11:25 requires perfect righteousness
00:11:25 --> 00:11:27 of which we cannot
00:11:27 --> 00:11:29 give ourselves.
00:11:30 --> 00:11:32 In 2 Corinthians 5,
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 verse 21,
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 it says,
00:11:34 --> 00:11:35 God made him,
00:11:35 --> 00:11:37 that is Jesus Christ,
00:11:37 --> 00:11:39 who had no sin
00:11:39 --> 00:11:41 to be sin for us
00:11:41 --> 00:11:43 so that in him
00:11:43 --> 00:11:45 we might become
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 the righteousness of God.
00:11:48 --> 00:11:50 Jesus is the one
00:11:50 --> 00:11:51 who can cover
00:11:51 --> 00:11:53 all of our sins.
00:11:53 --> 00:11:56 Now, many think
00:11:56 --> 00:11:58 that God will let
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 everyone
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 pass the entrance
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 into heaven
00:12:01 --> 00:12:03 on the day of judgment.
00:12:04 --> 00:12:06 But how can that be perfect
00:12:06 --> 00:12:08 if he lets those
00:12:08 --> 00:12:10 who have ignored him
00:12:10 --> 00:12:11 all their lives
00:12:11 --> 00:12:13 and done their own thing?
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 Those who have been wicked,
00:12:16 --> 00:12:18 those who have been selfish,
00:12:18 --> 00:12:20 those who have been self-motivated.
00:12:20 --> 00:12:23 And dare I say,
00:12:25 --> 00:12:27 how can even welcoming
00:12:27 --> 00:12:29 a religious person
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 who comes to church
00:12:30 --> 00:12:32 every Sunday
00:12:32 --> 00:12:36 and then forgets God
00:12:36 --> 00:12:38 the rest of the week
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 for six days,
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 no thought of God,
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 but I'm in church
00:12:43 --> 00:12:43 on a Sunday,
00:12:44 --> 00:12:46 how can that be just
00:12:46 --> 00:12:48 if God allows that person
00:12:48 --> 00:12:50 into his heaven?
00:12:50 --> 00:12:52 You might remember
00:12:52 --> 00:12:54 Jesus said some pretty
00:12:54 --> 00:12:55 horrendous things
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 about the Pharisees.
00:12:58 --> 00:12:59 And in Luke 11,
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 Jesus comments
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 about the Pharisees
00:13:02 --> 00:13:03 in many different ways.
00:13:04 --> 00:13:06 But maybe one
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 of the worst comments
00:13:07 --> 00:13:08 is,
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 woe to you,
00:13:10 --> 00:13:12 experts in the law,
00:13:12 --> 00:13:15 because you have taken away
00:13:15 --> 00:13:17 the key to knowledge.
00:13:17 --> 00:13:19 you yourselves
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 have not entered
00:13:20 --> 00:13:22 and you have hindered
00:13:22 --> 00:13:25 those who are entering.
00:13:27 --> 00:13:29 How awful is that?
00:13:30 --> 00:13:33 To just be a nice person
00:13:33 --> 00:13:35 isn't what is needed.
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 Putting your life
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 into Jesus' hands
00:13:38 --> 00:13:40 100% is what is needed.
00:13:40 --> 00:13:43 to know that you need saving
00:13:43 --> 00:13:45 and that Jesus
00:13:45 --> 00:13:47 is the perfect saviour
00:13:47 --> 00:13:49 because he has taken
00:13:49 --> 00:13:50 the punishment
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 that we deserve
00:13:51 --> 00:13:51 on the cross.
00:13:51 --> 00:13:53 So that we then
00:13:53 --> 00:13:55 can stand confident
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 when that book
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 is open
00:13:57 --> 00:13:59 and everything
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 about our lives
00:14:00 --> 00:14:01 is revealed.
00:14:01 --> 00:14:03 Our sin
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 will not be seen
00:14:04 --> 00:14:06 but Jesus
00:14:06 --> 00:14:07 by his very
00:14:07 --> 00:14:09 life and death
00:14:09 --> 00:14:10 will be covering
00:14:10 --> 00:14:11 the pages
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 and only
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 Jesus
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 will be seen.
00:14:15 --> 00:14:17 If we are trusting
00:14:17 --> 00:14:17 in Jesus
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 as Lord
00:14:18 --> 00:14:20 and saviour
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 then the perfect
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 knowledge
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 of all of our
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 actions
00:14:24 --> 00:14:26 good and sinful
00:14:26 --> 00:14:28 will in fact
00:14:28 --> 00:14:28 be covered
00:14:28 --> 00:14:30 by our saviour
00:14:30 --> 00:14:31 Jesus.
00:14:31 --> 00:14:34 Now God's
00:14:34 --> 00:14:35 perfect justice
00:14:35 --> 00:14:36 will also be
00:14:36 --> 00:14:36 a perfect
00:14:36 --> 00:14:37 judgement.
00:14:38 --> 00:14:40 There was
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 a day of judgement
00:14:41 --> 00:14:42 for Haman.
00:14:43 --> 00:14:44 For a time
00:14:44 --> 00:14:45 it all looked
00:14:45 --> 00:14:46 as if
00:14:46 --> 00:14:46 everything
00:14:46 --> 00:14:48 was going well
00:14:48 --> 00:14:48 for Haman.
00:14:48 --> 00:14:50 He had position
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 he had wealth
00:14:51 --> 00:14:51 he had power
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 he had honour.
00:14:54 --> 00:14:54 It would be
00:14:54 --> 00:14:55 understandable
00:14:55 --> 00:14:56 to be looking on
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 and say
00:14:57 --> 00:14:59 this isn't fair
00:14:59 --> 00:15:00 this person
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 is evil.
00:15:01 --> 00:15:02 and yet
00:15:02 --> 00:15:03 look at
00:15:03 --> 00:15:03 everything
00:15:03 --> 00:15:04 that he has
00:15:04 --> 00:15:07 and that is
00:15:07 --> 00:15:07 not uncommon
00:15:07 --> 00:15:08 in life.
00:15:09 --> 00:15:10 We see
00:15:10 --> 00:15:11 many people
00:15:11 --> 00:15:11 in life
00:15:11 --> 00:15:13 who are
00:15:13 --> 00:15:14 elevated
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 seemingly
00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 blessed
00:15:16 --> 00:15:17 in finances
00:15:17 --> 00:15:18 and position
00:15:18 --> 00:15:20 and we might
00:15:20 --> 00:15:20 be tempted
00:15:20 --> 00:15:21 to call out
00:15:21 --> 00:15:22 and say
00:15:22 --> 00:15:24 it isn't fair.
00:15:24 --> 00:15:24 fair.
00:15:25 --> 00:15:26 How often
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 have you thought
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 that a punishment
00:15:28 --> 00:15:29 does not
00:15:29 --> 00:15:30 fit the crime?
00:15:31 --> 00:15:32 We cry out
00:15:32 --> 00:15:33 it isn't fair
00:15:33 --> 00:15:34 and I can
00:15:34 --> 00:15:35 and every one
00:15:35 --> 00:15:35 of you with
00:15:35 --> 00:15:36 children will
00:15:36 --> 00:15:36 know
00:15:36 --> 00:15:38 children can
00:15:38 --> 00:15:38 do this
00:15:38 --> 00:15:39 the best.
00:15:39 --> 00:15:41 they cry out
00:15:41 --> 00:15:41 they cry out
00:15:41 --> 00:15:42 but it's
00:15:42 --> 00:15:43 not fair
00:15:43 --> 00:15:44 she is
00:15:44 --> 00:15:45 to blame
00:15:45 --> 00:15:45 he is
00:15:45 --> 00:15:46 to blame
00:15:46 --> 00:15:48 but with
00:15:48 --> 00:15:49 God
00:15:49 --> 00:15:50 his punishment
00:15:50 --> 00:15:52 is perfect.
00:15:53 --> 00:15:54 Psalm 73
00:15:54 --> 00:15:54 the whole
00:15:54 --> 00:15:55 of the psalm
00:15:55 --> 00:15:56 explains
00:15:56 --> 00:15:57 this dilemma
00:15:57 --> 00:15:59 beautifully
00:15:59 --> 00:16:00 but we won't
00:16:00 --> 00:16:01 read the whole psalm
00:16:01 --> 00:16:02 but the psalmist
00:16:02 --> 00:16:02 does say
00:16:02 --> 00:16:04 I envied
00:16:04 --> 00:16:05 the arrogant
00:16:05 --> 00:16:06 when I saw
00:16:06 --> 00:16:08 their prosperity
00:16:08 --> 00:16:10 and the wicked
00:16:10 --> 00:16:11 they have no
00:16:11 --> 00:16:12 struggles
00:16:12 --> 00:16:12 their bodies
00:16:12 --> 00:16:13 are healthy
00:16:13 --> 00:16:13 and strong
00:16:13 --> 00:16:14 they are free
00:16:14 --> 00:16:15 from common
00:16:15 --> 00:16:16 human burdens
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 they are not
00:16:17 --> 00:16:18 plagued
00:16:18 --> 00:16:18 by human
00:16:18 --> 00:16:19 ills
00:16:19 --> 00:16:21 and the psalmist
00:16:21 --> 00:16:21 continues
00:16:21 --> 00:16:22 with saying
00:16:22 --> 00:16:23 that he has
00:16:23 --> 00:16:24 been faithful
00:16:24 --> 00:16:25 and yet
00:16:25 --> 00:16:26 things are
00:16:26 --> 00:16:26 going wrong
00:16:26 --> 00:16:27 for him
00:16:27 --> 00:16:28 and he cries
00:16:28 --> 00:16:28 out to God
00:16:28 --> 00:16:29 and he says
00:16:29 --> 00:16:29 God
00:16:29 --> 00:16:30 this isn't
00:16:30 --> 00:16:31 fair
00:16:31 --> 00:16:33 and then
00:16:33 --> 00:16:34 he realises
00:16:34 --> 00:16:36 it's not
00:16:36 --> 00:16:37 fair
00:16:37 --> 00:16:38 only for
00:16:38 --> 00:16:39 a time
00:16:39 --> 00:16:42 in the psalm
00:16:42 --> 00:16:42 it says
00:16:42 --> 00:16:43 how quickly
00:16:43 --> 00:16:44 are they
00:16:44 --> 00:16:45 destroyed
00:16:45 --> 00:16:46 completely
00:16:46 --> 00:16:47 swept away
00:16:47 --> 00:16:48 by terrors
00:16:48 --> 00:16:51 it looks
00:16:51 --> 00:16:52 all unfair
00:16:52 --> 00:16:53 but it's
