00:00:00 --> 00:00:05 If you're new here this morning or you've had a bit of a gap in what's been happening here in the last couple of weeks,
00:00:05 --> 00:00:06 we've been following the story of Esther.
00:00:07 --> 00:00:13 She's the young orphan Jewish woman who becomes the queen of Persia,
00:00:13 --> 00:00:16 the greatest empire in the world at that particular time.
00:00:17 --> 00:00:21 It all turns bad for God's people when the crazed Haman,
00:00:21 --> 00:00:25 the bloke who we just saw in God's word just then,
00:00:25 --> 00:00:31 has all the people, the Jews, that is God's people throughout the whole empire of Persia,
00:00:31 --> 00:00:37 condemned to be annihilated because Mordecai, the other guy in the passage which was just read out then,
00:00:37 --> 00:00:40 wouldn't acknowledge how important he was.
00:00:41 --> 00:00:48 Last week we saw that Esther risked everything in her life in her palace,
00:00:48 --> 00:00:53 her own life in fact, to work to save God's people.
00:00:53 --> 00:01:01 You could have walked away from last week thinking that it's all about to work out now for God's people.
00:01:02 --> 00:01:03 A saviour has arisen.
00:01:04 --> 00:01:08 But so far, Esther hasn't done a whole lot.
00:01:09 --> 00:01:14 She said she's got to go to the king and she's been to king once and, you know, let's have dinner.
00:01:15 --> 00:01:16 That's about it, really.
00:01:16 --> 00:01:22 The clock was still ticking towards that deadline of annihilation.
00:01:23 --> 00:01:31 And what we discover from what was just read out to us now is that there is a separate clock ticking,
00:01:31 --> 00:01:34 and that is for Mordecai's own fate,
00:01:35 --> 00:01:40 a fate that Esther herself and Mordecai and Xerxes were just oblivious to.
00:01:40 --> 00:01:45 The edicts against the Jews had several months to run,
00:01:46 --> 00:01:53 but Haman's determination to execute Mordecai required only hours to run.
00:01:55 --> 00:02:02 And again, we see here God is silent, but he is sovereignly at work through the ordinary,
00:02:02 --> 00:02:05 and in fact, I'm not sure if you picked it up as you were saying we're through there,
00:02:05 --> 00:02:09 through the ridiculous situation that we find ourselves in in chapter 6.
00:02:11 --> 00:02:18 What I want to do today, though, is I want to really sort of plan to take a look at this villain of the whole story,
00:02:18 --> 00:02:19 this guy named Haman.
00:02:20 --> 00:02:21 I want to focus particularly on him.
00:02:21 --> 00:02:29 Haman would have to be one of the most vivid and sustained case studies in the whole Bible
00:02:29 --> 00:02:32 about what the Bible says about pride
00:02:32 --> 00:02:36 and what happens when pride rages unchecked.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:41 So this is not an overstatement.
00:02:41 --> 00:02:45 It's important for you to listen,
00:02:46 --> 00:02:48 because it might just save your life.
00:02:49 --> 00:02:51 That's not an overstatement.
00:02:54 --> 00:02:58 Haman has the highest position in the king's administration.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:05 Xerxes, in fact, has to command people to kneel down and to honour Haman.
00:03:05 --> 00:03:14 It's a pretty odd thing to command, to make such a command in what is a hierarchical and a traditional society,
00:03:14 --> 00:03:18 where bowing is instinctive for position.
00:03:19 --> 00:03:22 And so Haman must have been a particularly obnoxious individual
00:03:22 --> 00:03:25 for the king to have to command people to bow in front of him.
00:03:26 --> 00:03:30 And one man, despite the king's command, wouldn't do it.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:31 Mordecai.
00:03:31 --> 00:03:34 We see that, first of all, back in chapter 3.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:38 But if we fast forward to chapter 5, verse 9, our text today,
00:03:39 --> 00:03:44 we see Haman is leaving a dinner party he's just had with Xerxes and Esther,
00:03:44 --> 00:03:47 and he's fairly pleased with himself.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:49 It says,
00:03:49 --> 00:04:06 Nevertheless, Haman restrained himself and he went home.
00:04:06 --> 00:04:15 And the next verses reveal that he didn't just leave the banquet in high spirits
00:04:15 --> 00:04:19 because of the effect of alcohol in his system.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:26 He was also leaving because of the intoxicating impact of self-importance.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:30 At the end of verse 10, it says,
00:04:30 --> 00:04:32 He goes home from that moment.
00:04:33 --> 00:04:37 He calls together his friends and his wife.
00:04:38 --> 00:04:42 And Haman boasted to them about his vast wealth,
00:04:43 --> 00:04:44 his many sons,
00:04:44 --> 00:04:47 and all the ways the king has honoured him
00:04:47 --> 00:04:51 and how he has elevated him above the other nobles and officials.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:55 And that's not all, Haman says.
00:04:55 --> 00:05:01 I am the only person that Queen Esther invited to accompany the king
00:05:01 --> 00:05:03 to the banquet she gave.
00:05:05 --> 00:05:08 And she's invited me along with the king tomorrow.
00:05:09 --> 00:05:12 But all this gives me no satisfaction
00:05:12 --> 00:05:16 as long as I see that Jew Mordecai sitting at the king's gate.
00:05:18 --> 00:05:22 Haman's whole world revolved around his fragile ego.
00:05:22 --> 00:05:26 His emotional strings were being pulled by his idol
00:05:26 --> 00:05:28 when he saw Mordecai.
00:05:28 --> 00:05:31 And his strings, the emotional idol,
00:05:31 --> 00:05:33 his attachment here is his public recognition,
00:05:34 --> 00:05:35 his public respect.
00:05:36 --> 00:05:39 And when that idol was being fed by the masses,
00:05:39 --> 00:05:40 he felt good.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:42 But when it was challenged,
00:05:42 --> 00:05:45 it led him ultimately to anger and malice.
00:05:45 --> 00:05:49 And so when his ego is dented by this guy Mordecai
00:05:49 --> 00:05:51 having left the palace,
00:05:51 --> 00:05:54 he immediately goes home to pump up his ego.
00:05:55 --> 00:05:56 He gathers his friends around.
00:05:57 --> 00:06:01 He gathers his wife and tells them how many sons he's got,
00:06:01 --> 00:06:03 like his wife doesn't know that,
00:06:04 --> 00:06:06 or how much money he's got,
00:06:06 --> 00:06:08 or how much power he has.
00:06:08 --> 00:06:13 He goes on this lengthy monologue of how great he is.
00:06:16 --> 00:06:17 It's ridiculous.
00:06:20 --> 00:06:22 And pride, according to the Bible,
00:06:23 --> 00:06:25 is concentration on the self.
00:06:28 --> 00:06:31 C.S. Lewis gave a great definition,
00:06:31 --> 00:06:32 his little book, Christian Behavior.
00:06:32 --> 00:06:34 He wrote,
00:06:34 --> 00:06:42 Pride is a ruthless, sleepless, unsmiling concentration on the self.
00:06:45 --> 00:06:48 Pride makes you concentrate everything about you.
00:06:51 --> 00:06:53 You don't get into relationships.
00:06:54 --> 00:06:56 You don't take a job or a role.
00:06:56 --> 00:06:58 You don't do anything
00:06:58 --> 00:07:02 unless it makes you feel good about yourself.
00:07:02 --> 00:07:08 Whatever makes you happy
00:07:08 --> 00:07:12 is a statement of pride.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 Pride's the goal.
00:07:14 --> 00:07:16 Pride is what drives that statement.
00:07:17 --> 00:07:19 Nothing is about the thing that you're doing.
00:07:19 --> 00:07:21 Everything is about you.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:25 And so Lewis writes that pride is essentially competitive.
00:07:25 --> 00:07:29 Pride gets no pleasure out of getting something,
00:07:29 --> 00:07:32 but only in having more of it than the next person.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:37 Pride turns everything as a means to an end.
00:07:37 --> 00:07:39 You never do things for their own sake.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:43 It's a means to an end of getting respect and approval.
00:07:43 --> 00:07:47 That is, pride is about image management.
00:07:47 --> 00:07:54 And that's the reason why Haman can have all that he has.
00:07:55 --> 00:07:59 He can walk out of a banquet with Xerxes and Esther,
00:08:00 --> 00:08:04 and he finds no satisfaction,
00:08:04 --> 00:08:07 as long as this Jew Mordecai is still alive.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:13 Mordecai will not give him the very thing he craves,
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 recognition.
00:08:16 --> 00:08:18 And that's why I think Lewis is right
00:08:18 --> 00:08:21 when he says that pride is sleepless,
00:08:22 --> 00:08:24 and it's unsmiling.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:26 It's sleepless
00:08:26 --> 00:08:31 because it results in an endless ego calculation.
00:08:31 --> 00:08:35 And it's unsmiling because you're never happy
00:08:35 --> 00:08:38 because you're not getting it.
00:08:40 --> 00:08:43 Am I getting the thanks I deserve?
00:08:43 --> 00:08:45 Am I getting the appreciation I deserve?
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 How am I being regarded?
00:08:46 --> 00:08:48 How does this make me look?
00:08:48 --> 00:08:52 Now, there are two forms of pride.
00:08:52 --> 00:08:56 There is the superiority form of pride.
00:08:56 --> 00:09:00 It's generally recognised as a pride by most people.
00:09:00 --> 00:09:02 That is, when you see it, you see it.
00:09:02 --> 00:09:04 It's acknowledgeable.
00:09:04 --> 00:09:06 You know, mention names like Donald Trump.
00:09:06 --> 00:09:08 He's never been called a humble man.
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 Things like that.
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 I mean, it sticks out.
00:09:10 --> 00:09:11 Superiority form of pride.
00:09:12 --> 00:09:14 There's another form of pride.
00:09:14 --> 00:09:17 It's the inferiority form of pride.
00:09:17 --> 00:09:19 And this is where you are down on yourself
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 and you don't like yourself.
00:09:20 --> 00:09:22 You're very self-conscious
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 and always beating yourself up.
00:09:24 --> 00:09:26 Now, the inferiority form of pride
00:09:26 --> 00:09:28 is doing exactly the same thing
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 as superiority form of pride.
00:09:29 --> 00:09:31 It's just that you don't score yourself as well.
00:09:33 --> 00:09:35 You're always looking at yourself.
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 You're always assessing yourself.
00:09:37 --> 00:09:39 You just don't score as well.
00:09:41 --> 00:09:46 And so humility is not thinking less of yourself
00:09:46 --> 00:09:50 it is thinking of yourself less.
00:09:53 --> 00:09:56 Humility is not thinking less of yourself
00:09:56 --> 00:09:59 it is thinking of yourself less.
00:10:00 --> 00:10:03 Humility is not being needy
00:10:03 --> 00:10:05 or driven for approval and recognition
00:10:05 --> 00:10:07 and respect.
00:10:07 --> 00:10:11 And if you actually met a truly humble person
00:10:11 --> 00:10:14 you wouldn't come away thinking they were humble.
00:10:16 --> 00:10:18 You were just thinking they were incredibly happy
00:10:18 --> 00:10:20 and were just interested in you.
00:10:23 --> 00:10:25 Humble persons not thinking about themselves
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 and how they're being treated
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 or how they're being looked at.
00:10:27 --> 00:10:30 That is, the ego calculation is not there.
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 Am I being recognised?
00:10:33 --> 00:10:38 Now, pride can be a little bit embarrassing
00:10:38 --> 00:10:40 and a little bit awkward
00:10:40 --> 00:10:43 like I think it might have been
00:10:43 --> 00:10:45 to listen to Haman's monologue
00:10:45 --> 00:10:48 but, you know, how bad could it really be?
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 Very bad.
00:10:54 --> 00:10:55 Very bad.
00:10:56 --> 00:10:58 Haman wasn't just satisfied with killing Mordecai
00:10:58 --> 00:11:01 and therefore forcing him to bow.
00:11:02 --> 00:11:06 He wanted to annihilate all the Jews in the empire.
00:11:07 --> 00:11:08 Pride leads to devastation
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 it leads to destruction.
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 It is deadly.
00:11:11 --> 00:11:13 Pride makes you evil.
00:11:15 --> 00:11:17 Pride is what the devil is
00:11:17 --> 00:11:19 what made the devil the devil.
00:11:20 --> 00:11:22 Since St. Augustine
00:11:22 --> 00:11:24 Christian theology has acknowledged
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 that pride is not just one sin
00:11:25 --> 00:11:27 amongst many
00:11:27 --> 00:11:29 but really is in fact
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 the root sin
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 below them all.
00:11:32 --> 00:11:34 C.S. Lewis again writes
00:11:34 --> 00:11:36 Pride leads us to every other vice.
00:11:37 --> 00:11:40 It is the complete anti-God state of mind.
00:11:40 --> 00:11:41 It is the essential vice
00:11:41 --> 00:11:43 the utmost evil
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 unchastity
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 anger
00:11:45 --> 00:11:45 greed
00:11:45 --> 00:11:46 drunkenness
00:11:46 --> 00:11:48 are mere flea bites
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 in comparison.
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 So for instance
00:11:52 --> 00:11:53 some of us
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 maybe even many of us
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 struggle
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 a heap
00:11:56 --> 00:11:57 with bitterness
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 towards people
00:11:58 --> 00:12:00 because of what they've done
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 for us in the past.
00:12:02 --> 00:12:04 But you cannot stay angry
00:12:04 --> 00:12:05 and bitter
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 with someone
00:12:06 --> 00:12:08 unless you feel superior
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 to that person.
00:12:11 --> 00:12:12 That's what C.S. Lewis is saying
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 it's the root
00:12:13 --> 00:12:14 pride's the root.
00:12:15 --> 00:12:17 There is no bitterness
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 without pride.
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 Pride says
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 I would never do that.
00:12:21 --> 00:12:25 And if your life
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 is distorted by anger
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 it's because
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 pride is the root of it.
00:12:29 --> 00:12:30 Pride leads to being
00:12:30 --> 00:12:31 opinionated
00:12:31 --> 00:12:33 but it also leads
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 to being indecisive.
00:12:35 --> 00:12:36 Pride makes you shy
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 but it also makes you
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 too abrasive.
00:12:39 --> 00:12:40 There is racism
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 and social injustice
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 and imperialism
00:12:42 --> 00:12:44 they all come
00:12:44 --> 00:12:45 from pride
00:12:45 --> 00:12:46 a racial pride
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 or a class pride
00:12:47 --> 00:12:49 which results
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 in all kinds of evil.
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 Pride makes you evil.
00:12:52 --> 00:12:53 Pride also makes you a fool.
00:12:55 --> 00:12:55 Haman
00:12:55 --> 00:12:57 didn't pick up at all
00:12:57 --> 00:12:58 that three was a crowd.
00:13:00 --> 00:13:02 Would that not have been awkward?
00:13:04 --> 00:13:06 Going to the queen's banquet
00:13:06 --> 00:13:06 just
00:13:06 --> 00:13:07 just the three of you?
00:13:11 --> 00:13:12 Pride makes you a fool.
00:13:12 --> 00:13:13 Pride keeps you
00:13:13 --> 00:13:14 from ever learning
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 from your mistakes.
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 A proud heart
00:13:16 --> 00:13:17 is always
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 justifying itself.
00:13:19 --> 00:13:20 When relationships
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 are going bad
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 or the job
00:13:22 --> 00:13:22 isn't working out
00:13:22 --> 00:13:23 it's always
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 something
00:13:24 --> 00:13:26 or someone else's fault.
00:13:28 --> 00:13:29 When you're angry
00:13:29 --> 00:13:29 it's always
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 someone else's fault
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 the reason why
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 you're angry.
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 Humble people
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 aren't always
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 standing on their own
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 dignity.
00:13:37 --> 00:13:37 They can actually
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 laugh at themselves.
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 They can learn.
00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 And when something
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 goes wrong
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 they look for
00:13:42 --> 00:13:43 what they might
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 have contributed.
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 What they might have
00:13:45 --> 00:13:46 even if it's not
00:13:46 --> 00:13:47 mainly their fault.
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 They find the part
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 that they need
00:13:49 --> 00:13:50 to own
00:13:50 --> 00:13:52 to learn from it
00:13:52 --> 00:13:52 and grow.
00:13:54 --> 00:13:54 And proud people
00:13:54 --> 00:13:56 don't just learn
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 not learn from
00:13:57 --> 00:13:59 mistakes in general
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 they don't learn
00:14:00 --> 00:14:01 from criticism
00:14:01 --> 00:14:02 in particular.
00:14:04 --> 00:14:05 One of the best
00:14:05 --> 00:14:05 ways to grow
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 is to take
00:14:06 --> 00:14:07 criticism.
00:14:07 --> 00:14:09 The superior
00:14:09 --> 00:14:10 type of pride
00:14:10 --> 00:14:12 dismisses criticism
00:14:12 --> 00:14:12 because who are you
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 to tell me
00:14:13 --> 00:14:14 how I need
00:14:14 --> 00:14:15 to improve?
00:14:15 --> 00:14:17 the inferiority
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 form of pride
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 means you get
00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 so melted
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 down with
00:14:21 --> 00:14:21 criticism
00:14:21 --> 00:14:23 that people
00:14:23 --> 00:14:23 are too scared
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 to say anything
00:14:24 --> 00:14:25 to you
00:14:25 --> 00:14:27 without a good
00:14:27 --> 00:14:28 box of tissues.
00:14:30 --> 00:14:31 You never learn
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 anything
00:14:32 --> 00:14:35 and so therefore
00:14:35 --> 00:14:36 you constantly
00:14:36 --> 00:14:37 make bad
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 choices
00:14:38 --> 00:14:40 like Haman
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 does here
00:14:41 --> 00:14:41 and you
00:14:41 --> 00:14:41 surround
00:14:41 --> 00:14:42 yourselves
00:14:42 --> 00:14:44 with the
00:14:44 --> 00:14:44 wrong
00:14:44 --> 00:14:45 advisors
00:14:45 --> 00:14:47 like Haman
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 does here.
00:14:48 --> 00:14:53 what is
00:14:53 --> 00:14:53 particularly
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 difficult
00:14:54 --> 00:14:56 is that
00:14:56 --> 00:14:56 pride
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 hides
00:14:57 --> 00:14:57 itself.
00:14:58 --> 00:14:58 Pride is
00:14:58 --> 00:14:59 the
00:14:59 --> 00:15:00 carbon
00:15:00 --> 00:15:00 monoxide
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 of sin
00:15:01 --> 00:15:03 it's the
00:15:03 --> 00:15:03 sin that
00:15:03 --> 00:15:04 hides
00:15:04 --> 00:15:04 itself
00:15:04 --> 00:15:05 it kills
00:15:05 --> 00:15:05 you without
00:15:05 --> 00:15:05 you even
00:15:05 --> 00:15:06 knowing
00:15:06 --> 00:15:06 it's
00:15:06 --> 00:15:06 happening
00:15:06 --> 00:15:08 the more
00:15:08 --> 00:15:08 proud you
00:15:08 --> 00:15:09 are
00:15:09 --> 00:15:11 the more
00:15:11 --> 00:15:11 you are
00:15:11 --> 00:15:12 in its
00:15:12 --> 00:15:12 clutches
00:15:12 --> 00:15:14 and the
00:15:14 --> 00:15:14 less proud
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 you think
00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 you are
00:15:16 --> 00:15:17 because the
00:15:17 --> 00:15:17 more you
00:15:17 --> 00:15:18 will see
00:15:18 --> 00:15:18 it in
00:15:18 --> 00:15:18 other
00:15:18 --> 00:15:19 people.

00:15:57 --> 00:15:58 people hate
00:15:58 --> 00:16:01 snobs but
00:16:01 --> 00:16:01 you can only
00:16:01 --> 00:16:02 hate snobs if
00:16:02 --> 00:16:02 you feel
00:16:02 --> 00:16:03 superior to
00:16:03 --> 00:16:04 snobs.
00:16:06 --> 00:16:06 Hating
00:16:06 --> 00:16:08 snobbery is
