00:00:01 --> 00:00:04 There was an article in one of Sydney newspapers
00:00:04 --> 00:00:07 around about five years ago now, I think,
00:00:08 --> 00:00:10 with the title, Cheer Up Sydney.
00:00:12 --> 00:00:15 Apparently, the article went on that Sydneysiders
00:00:15 --> 00:00:18 have a particular legendary preference
00:00:18 --> 00:00:22 for complaining and whinging and whining.
00:00:24 --> 00:00:25 And as the article went on,
00:00:25 --> 00:00:29 the solution for our unhappiness
00:00:29 --> 00:00:33 according to the psychologist Susie Green,
00:00:33 --> 00:00:35 who was at the time the CEO
00:00:35 --> 00:00:38 of the Sydney-based Positivity Institute,
00:00:38 --> 00:00:39 was quite simple.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:40 She said,
00:00:40 --> 00:00:43 we live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world
00:00:43 --> 00:00:46 and generally people are kind and caring.
00:00:47 --> 00:00:49 We aren't living in a war-turned country.
00:00:51 --> 00:00:52 The point is,
00:00:52 --> 00:00:57 the reason that we aren't a cheerier lot
00:00:57 --> 00:01:02 is because of negative circumstances.
00:01:03 --> 00:01:04 That's her view.
00:01:05 --> 00:01:06 And in actual fact,
00:01:06 --> 00:01:07 we should be cheery
00:01:07 --> 00:01:10 because we haven't got as many negative circumstances
00:01:10 --> 00:01:11 as other people do in life.
00:01:12 --> 00:01:13 I mean,
00:01:13 --> 00:01:16 the source for your happiness should be,
00:01:17 --> 00:01:17 right now,
00:01:18 --> 00:01:19 looking at Ukraine.
00:01:19 --> 00:01:21 You should be happy
00:01:21 --> 00:01:22 if you look at Ukraine,
00:01:23 --> 00:01:23 for instance.
00:01:25 --> 00:01:26 And in a similar vein,
00:01:27 --> 00:01:28 happiness.com
00:01:28 --> 00:01:31 reveals a list of five top components
00:01:31 --> 00:01:32 for a life of happiness.
00:01:33 --> 00:01:34 Number one,
00:01:34 --> 00:01:37 be in possession of the basic stuff of life,
00:01:37 --> 00:01:38 of food,
00:01:38 --> 00:01:39 shelter,
00:01:39 --> 00:01:40 good health and safety.
00:01:40 --> 00:01:41 Number two,
00:01:41 --> 00:01:42 get enough sleep.
00:01:43 --> 00:01:44 That's why most parents are miserable.
00:01:44 --> 00:01:47 Number three,
00:01:48 --> 00:01:50 have relationships that matter to you.
00:01:50 --> 00:01:51 Number four,
00:01:52 --> 00:01:55 take compassionate care of yourself and others.
00:01:55 --> 00:01:56 And number five,
00:01:57 --> 00:01:59 have work that's really interesting
00:01:59 --> 00:02:01 and engages you.
00:02:02 --> 00:02:02 Now,
00:02:02 --> 00:02:03 on one level,
00:02:04 --> 00:02:07 you could see why someone in a Western society
00:02:08 --> 00:02:09 in a large city
00:02:09 --> 00:02:10 would look at that list and go,
00:02:10 --> 00:02:11 that's logical.
00:02:12 --> 00:02:13 On another level,
00:02:13 --> 00:02:14 it's a ridiculous list.
00:02:15 --> 00:02:17 It makes no sense at all to most people.
00:02:18 --> 00:02:18 Most people,
00:02:18 --> 00:02:19 in most places,
00:02:19 --> 00:02:20 in most centuries,
00:02:20 --> 00:02:21 in the history of the world,
00:02:22 --> 00:02:25 have never experienced anything like that list.
00:02:25 --> 00:02:26 Ever.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:30 What do you do with people
00:02:30 --> 00:02:32 who have never had food,
00:02:32 --> 00:02:32 shelter,
00:02:32 --> 00:02:33 health and safety?
00:02:34 --> 00:02:35 And they'll never have it.
00:02:36 --> 00:02:37 They're confined to misery
00:02:37 --> 00:02:38 all of their life.
00:02:40 --> 00:02:41 I don't think history would say that's the case.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:43 Or what about those
00:02:43 --> 00:02:44 on the list?
00:02:44 --> 00:02:45 Number five,
00:02:45 --> 00:02:47 engaging and interesting work.
00:02:48 --> 00:02:48 I mean,
00:02:49 --> 00:02:49 come on.
00:02:50 --> 00:02:52 How many people
00:02:52 --> 00:02:53 actually experience that
00:02:53 --> 00:02:55 every day of their life
00:02:55 --> 00:02:56 in the workforce?
00:02:56 --> 00:02:59 our culture places
00:02:59 --> 00:03:01 the maximizing of joy
00:03:01 --> 00:03:02 and happiness in life
00:03:02 --> 00:03:03 as, in fact,
00:03:03 --> 00:03:04 one of the greatest
00:03:04 --> 00:03:05 pursuits of life.
00:03:06 --> 00:03:07 How many times
00:03:07 --> 00:03:08 have you ever heard,
00:03:08 --> 00:03:09 do whatever makes you happy?
00:03:10 --> 00:03:11 The most important thing is
00:03:11 --> 00:03:12 that they're happy.
00:03:13 --> 00:03:15 Or he died doing what made him happy.
00:03:16 --> 00:03:16 I mean,
00:03:17 --> 00:03:17 what nonsense.
00:03:18 --> 00:03:18 Seriously.
00:03:18 --> 00:03:19 Christianity,
00:03:21 --> 00:03:21 Christianity,
00:03:22 --> 00:03:23 amazingly,
00:03:23 --> 00:03:24 is after the same thing.
00:03:26 --> 00:03:27 Do what brings you
00:03:27 --> 00:03:28 the most amount of joy
00:03:28 --> 00:03:30 in life.
00:03:31 --> 00:03:33 Only that it would suggest
00:03:33 --> 00:03:35 that God is central
00:03:35 --> 00:03:36 to that life
00:03:36 --> 00:03:37 of joy.
00:03:38 --> 00:03:39 In fact,
00:03:39 --> 00:03:39 joy
00:03:39 --> 00:03:41 is
00:03:41 --> 00:03:42 one of the
00:03:42 --> 00:03:44 major consequences
00:03:44 --> 00:03:46 of the Christian faith.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:49 it is
00:03:49 --> 00:03:50 the benefit
00:03:50 --> 00:03:52 of being justified
00:03:52 --> 00:03:53 by faith,
00:03:54 --> 00:03:54 justified,
00:03:55 --> 00:03:56 as we have sung this morning,
00:03:57 --> 00:03:58 not based on
00:03:58 --> 00:03:59 any of my work,
00:04:00 --> 00:04:00 based on
00:04:00 --> 00:04:02 any of my circumstances.
00:04:04 --> 00:04:05 Being made right
00:04:05 --> 00:04:05 with God
00:04:05 --> 00:04:07 makes a huge
00:04:07 --> 00:04:08 difference to your life.
00:04:10 --> 00:04:11 It makes a difference
00:04:11 --> 00:04:12 not only to where
00:04:12 --> 00:04:13 we might be heading
00:04:13 --> 00:04:14 in the future,
00:04:15 --> 00:04:16 but to how we act
00:04:16 --> 00:04:18 and experience
00:04:18 --> 00:04:19 the presence,
00:04:19 --> 00:04:20 present right now,
00:04:21 --> 00:04:21 here,
00:04:22 --> 00:04:23 in both the good times
00:04:23 --> 00:04:24 and the bad times,
00:04:24 --> 00:04:25 and that's where we turn
00:04:25 --> 00:04:27 to Romans 5.
00:04:27 --> 00:04:28 If you've got your Bibles,
00:04:28 --> 00:04:29 turn it up there.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:30 Really got two points,
00:04:30 --> 00:04:31 but a bunch of sub points.
00:04:32 --> 00:04:32 So,
00:04:32 --> 00:04:33 don't get too excited
00:04:33 --> 00:04:34 too quick.
00:04:36 --> 00:04:37 Really two points,
00:04:37 --> 00:04:38 enjoying justification
00:04:38 --> 00:04:40 and confidently
00:04:40 --> 00:04:42 enjoying justification.
00:04:42 --> 00:04:44 So,
00:04:45 --> 00:04:45 chapter 5 begins
00:04:45 --> 00:04:47 with the connection
00:04:47 --> 00:04:47 between
00:04:47 --> 00:04:48 the first four chapters
00:04:48 --> 00:04:49 with the word
00:04:49 --> 00:04:49 therefore,
00:04:50 --> 00:04:51 since we have
00:04:51 --> 00:04:52 been justified.
00:04:53 --> 00:04:53 So,
00:04:53 --> 00:04:54 this is flowing
00:04:54 --> 00:04:55 out of
00:04:55 --> 00:04:56 justification
00:04:56 --> 00:04:57 by faith.
00:04:58 --> 00:04:59 The benefits
00:04:59 --> 00:05:00 he is about
00:05:00 --> 00:05:00 to write about
00:05:00 --> 00:05:01 flow directly
00:05:01 --> 00:05:03 from being justified
00:05:03 --> 00:05:03 by faith.
00:05:05 --> 00:05:05 I see
00:05:05 --> 00:05:07 six of these
00:05:07 --> 00:05:08 in the first
00:05:08 --> 00:05:09 11 verses
00:05:09 --> 00:05:09 and we're going
00:05:09 --> 00:05:10 to go through
00:05:10 --> 00:05:10 those
00:05:10 --> 00:05:11 quickly.
00:05:12 --> 00:05:12 First of all,
00:05:12 --> 00:05:13 the first benefit
00:05:13 --> 00:05:13 in verse 1
00:05:13 --> 00:05:14 is peace with God.
00:05:16 --> 00:05:17 There is a difference
00:05:17 --> 00:05:19 from the peace
00:05:19 --> 00:05:20 of God
00:05:20 --> 00:05:22 which might be
00:05:22 --> 00:05:22 described
00:05:22 --> 00:05:24 as a calm
00:05:24 --> 00:05:25 and satisfied
00:05:25 --> 00:05:26 heart
00:05:26 --> 00:05:27 during troubles
00:05:27 --> 00:05:27 and pressures.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:30 This one here
00:05:30 --> 00:05:31 is peace
00:05:31 --> 00:05:33 with God.
00:05:34 --> 00:05:35 It is peace
00:05:35 --> 00:05:36 in relation
00:05:36 --> 00:05:36 to God,
00:05:36 --> 00:05:38 peace about God.
00:05:39 --> 00:05:39 You see,
00:05:39 --> 00:05:40 peace with God
00:05:40 --> 00:05:41 means that the
00:05:41 --> 00:05:42 state of hostilities
00:05:42 --> 00:05:43 between God
00:05:43 --> 00:05:44 and humanity
00:05:44 --> 00:05:45 is now over.
00:05:46 --> 00:05:47 Peace with God
00:05:47 --> 00:05:48 is peace
00:05:48 --> 00:05:49 in relation
00:05:49 --> 00:05:50 to God.
00:05:50 --> 00:05:51 It is
00:05:51 --> 00:05:52 objective,
00:05:53 --> 00:05:54 not subjective,
00:05:54 --> 00:05:55 it's objective
00:05:55 --> 00:05:56 and it happens
00:05:56 --> 00:05:57 regardless of
00:05:57 --> 00:05:58 my circumstances
00:05:58 --> 00:05:58 in life.
00:06:00 --> 00:06:01 This means
00:06:01 --> 00:06:03 that before
00:06:03 --> 00:06:04 salvation
00:06:04 --> 00:06:05 in Jesus
00:06:05 --> 00:06:06 Christ,
00:06:07 --> 00:06:08 all of humanity
00:06:08 --> 00:06:10 is at a state
00:06:10 --> 00:06:11 of war
00:06:11 --> 00:06:11 with God.
00:06:13 --> 00:06:14 When we live
00:06:14 --> 00:06:16 life our way
00:06:16 --> 00:06:16 without God,
00:06:17 --> 00:06:17 two things happen.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:19 The first thing
00:06:19 --> 00:06:21 is we claim
00:06:21 --> 00:06:22 authority
00:06:22 --> 00:06:23 over our lives
00:06:23 --> 00:06:24 and over the world
00:06:24 --> 00:06:25 in which we live.
00:06:27 --> 00:06:28 The problem is
00:06:28 --> 00:06:29 that God
00:06:29 --> 00:06:29 as the creator
00:06:29 --> 00:06:30 of all things
00:06:30 --> 00:06:31 claims authority
00:06:31 --> 00:06:32 over the exact
00:06:32 --> 00:06:32 same thing,
00:06:34 --> 00:06:34 himself.
00:06:34 --> 00:06:34 self.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:35 And when
00:06:35 --> 00:06:36 two parties
00:06:36 --> 00:06:38 claim authority
00:06:38 --> 00:06:39 over the same
00:06:39 --> 00:06:40 thing,
00:06:40 --> 00:06:41 you have
00:06:41 --> 00:06:42 conflict,
00:06:43 --> 00:06:44 you have war
00:06:44 --> 00:06:45 is what happens.
00:06:45 --> 00:06:49 And so that
00:06:49 --> 00:06:50 means that
00:06:50 --> 00:06:51 not only
00:06:51 --> 00:06:52 is God
00:06:52 --> 00:06:52 at war
00:06:52 --> 00:06:53 with us,
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 so we're
00:06:55 --> 00:06:55 at war
00:06:55 --> 00:06:55 with God
00:06:55 --> 00:06:56 because we
00:06:56 --> 00:06:56 claim authority
00:06:56 --> 00:06:57 over our lives,
00:06:57 --> 00:06:58 but he's also
00:06:58 --> 00:06:58 at war
00:06:58 --> 00:06:59 with us.
00:07:00 --> 00:07:00 He has a
00:07:00 --> 00:07:01 problem
00:07:01 --> 00:07:01 with us.
00:07:02 --> 00:07:02 It's not just
00:07:02 --> 00:07:03 that we're
00:07:03 --> 00:07:04 hostile to him,
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 he is also
00:07:05 --> 00:07:06 hostile to us.
00:07:07 --> 00:07:08 And we already
00:07:08 --> 00:07:09 know from
00:07:09 --> 00:07:10 Romans chapter
00:07:10 --> 00:07:11 one that
00:07:11 --> 00:07:11 God's anger
00:07:11 --> 00:07:13 is upon us.
00:07:13 --> 00:07:13 God's anger
00:07:13 --> 00:07:14 is not the
00:07:14 --> 00:07:15 same as
00:07:15 --> 00:07:16 our anger.
00:07:17 --> 00:07:18 It's not
00:07:18 --> 00:07:18 vengeful,
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 it's not
00:07:20 --> 00:07:20 vindictive.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 God's anger
00:07:22 --> 00:07:23 from Romans
00:07:23 --> 00:07:24 one is
00:07:24 --> 00:07:25 legal.
00:07:27 --> 00:07:28 There is a
00:07:28 --> 00:07:28 sentence
00:07:28 --> 00:07:30 on humanity
00:07:30 --> 00:07:31 that cannot
00:07:31 --> 00:07:32 just be
00:07:32 --> 00:07:33 ignored.
00:07:34 --> 00:07:34 Humanity
00:07:34 --> 00:07:35 has a debt
00:07:35 --> 00:07:36 against God
00:07:36 --> 00:07:37 that just
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 cannot be
00:07:38 --> 00:07:38 wished
00:07:38 --> 00:07:39 away.
00:07:39 --> 00:07:43 this is
00:07:43 --> 00:07:43 why
00:07:43 --> 00:07:44 we cannot
00:07:44 --> 00:07:45 simply
00:07:45 --> 00:07:47 turn back
00:07:47 --> 00:07:47 to God
00:07:47 --> 00:07:48 in our
00:07:48 --> 00:07:48 own
00:07:48 --> 00:07:48 efforts
00:07:48 --> 00:07:51 as
00:07:51 --> 00:07:51 though
00:07:51 --> 00:07:52 we can
00:07:52 --> 00:07:52 do
00:07:52 --> 00:07:52 all
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 that's
00:07:53 --> 00:07:53 necessary
00:07:53 --> 00:07:55 to be
00:07:55 --> 00:07:55 at peace
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 with God
00:07:56 --> 00:07:57 once more.
00:07:59 --> 00:08:00 And we've
00:08:00 --> 00:08:01 seen that
00:08:01 --> 00:08:01 in the
00:08:01 --> 00:08:02 first four
00:08:02 --> 00:08:02 chapters
00:08:02 --> 00:08:03 of Romans.
00:08:04 --> 00:08:04 Peace
00:08:04 --> 00:08:05 with God
00:08:05 --> 00:08:06 is something
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 that God
00:08:07 --> 00:08:08 must gift
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 us with.
00:08:10 --> 00:08:11 The second
00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 benefit is in
00:08:12 --> 00:08:12 verse two
00:08:12 --> 00:08:13 access by
00:08:13 --> 00:08:14 faith into
00:08:14 --> 00:08:15 this grace
00:08:15 --> 00:08:16 in which we
00:08:16 --> 00:08:16 now stand.
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 The sense
00:08:18 --> 00:08:18 of this
00:08:18 --> 00:08:20 language here
00:08:20 --> 00:08:21 is that
00:08:21 --> 00:08:24 is being
00:08:24 --> 00:08:25 brought near
00:08:25 --> 00:08:26 being
00:08:26 --> 00:08:27 introduced
00:08:27 --> 00:08:27 to
00:08:27 --> 00:08:29 to develop
00:08:29 --> 00:08:30 a relationship
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 with a
00:08:31 --> 00:08:31 powerful
00:08:31 --> 00:08:32 dignitary
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 you need
00:08:33 --> 00:08:34 an introduction.
00:08:35 --> 00:08:36 Access
00:08:36 --> 00:08:37 by faith
00:08:37 --> 00:08:38 into God's
00:08:38 --> 00:08:39 grace means
00:08:39 --> 00:08:39 that we
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 are given
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 a favorable
00:08:41 --> 00:08:42 position
00:08:42 --> 00:08:44 so that we
00:08:44 --> 00:08:45 can develop
00:08:45 --> 00:08:45 a personal
00:08:45 --> 00:08:46 relationship.
00:08:46 --> 00:08:46 That is
00:08:46 --> 00:08:47 Jesus
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 has
00:08:48 --> 00:08:49 introduced
00:08:49 --> 00:08:50 us to
00:08:50 --> 00:08:51 the God
00:08:51 --> 00:08:51 of the
00:08:51 --> 00:08:52 universe.
00:08:53 --> 00:08:54 We are
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 ushered into
00:08:55 --> 00:08:56 the royal
00:08:56 --> 00:08:57 throne room
00:08:57 --> 00:08:57 of the
00:08:57 --> 00:08:58 universe
00:08:58 --> 00:08:59 and there
00:08:59 --> 00:09:00 quite
00:09:00 --> 00:09:00 significantly
00:09:00 --> 00:09:01 the Christian
00:09:01 --> 00:09:02 stands.
00:09:03 --> 00:09:03 We don't come in
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 groveling,
00:09:04 --> 00:09:05 we stand
00:09:05 --> 00:09:06 and we
00:09:06 --> 00:09:07 remain
00:09:07 --> 00:09:08 there.
00:09:08 --> 00:09:09 We remain
00:09:09 --> 00:09:10 in the
00:09:10 --> 00:09:10 throne room
00:09:10 --> 00:09:11 wherever we
00:09:11 --> 00:09:11 go,
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 whatever is
00:09:13 --> 00:09:13 happening,
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 we remain
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 there in
00:09:15 --> 00:09:16 that place
00:09:16 --> 00:09:16 with Jesus.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:19 So this
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 takes us
00:09:20 --> 00:09:21 beyond just
00:09:21 --> 00:09:21 the step
00:09:21 --> 00:09:22 of peace
00:09:22 --> 00:09:23 with God
00:09:23 --> 00:09:24 which is
00:09:24 --> 00:09:24 the end
00:09:24 --> 00:09:25 of hostility.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 Justification
00:09:27 --> 00:09:28 is not merely
00:09:28 --> 00:09:28 the removal
00:09:28 --> 00:09:29 of the negative,
00:09:29 --> 00:09:31 it is imparting
00:09:31 --> 00:09:31 of the
00:09:31 --> 00:09:31 positive.
00:09:33 --> 00:09:33 This is
00:09:33 --> 00:09:34 friendship
00:09:34 --> 00:09:34 with God.
00:09:35 --> 00:09:36 Justification
00:09:36 --> 00:09:36 by faith
00:09:36 --> 00:09:37 gives me
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 access to
00:09:38 --> 00:09:38 God
00:09:38 --> 00:09:40 all the
00:09:40 --> 00:09:40 time.
00:09:41 --> 00:09:42 Third
00:09:42 --> 00:09:42 benefit
00:09:42 --> 00:09:44 to the
00:09:44 --> 00:09:44 hope of
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 the glory
00:09:45 --> 00:09:45 of God.
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 This is
00:09:47 --> 00:09:48 the present
00:09:48 --> 00:09:48 benefit
00:09:48 --> 00:09:50 of anticipating
00:09:50 --> 00:09:52 in God's
00:09:52 --> 00:09:52 future glory.
00:09:54 --> 00:09:55 The word
00:09:55 --> 00:09:55 hope here
00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 means conviction.
00:09:58 --> 00:09:58 It means
00:09:58 --> 00:10:00 a hope
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 filled
00:10:01 --> 00:10:02 certainty.
00:10:02 --> 00:10:03 It's about
00:10:03 --> 00:10:03 a certainty
00:10:03 --> 00:10:04 about the
00:10:04 --> 00:10:04 future.
00:10:05 --> 00:10:06 Now there's
00:10:06 --> 00:10:06 a progression
00:10:06 --> 00:10:07 that's happening
00:10:07 --> 00:10:07 here.
00:10:08 --> 00:10:08 The more
00:10:08 --> 00:10:10 we experience
00:10:10 --> 00:10:11 our peace
00:10:11 --> 00:10:12 and our
00:10:12 --> 00:10:13 access to
00:10:13 --> 00:10:14 God,
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 the more
00:10:16 --> 00:10:17 we will
00:10:17 --> 00:10:19 desire to
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 see Him,
00:10:20 --> 00:10:20 want to see
00:10:20 --> 00:10:21 Him face
00:10:21 --> 00:10:22 to face.
00:10:23 --> 00:10:23 And the
00:10:23 --> 00:10:24 more certain
00:10:24 --> 00:10:26 and thrilled
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 we become
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 with that
00:10:28 --> 00:10:28 prospect,
00:10:28 --> 00:10:29 into the
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 future.
00:10:30 --> 00:10:30 That's
00:10:30 --> 00:10:31 hope.
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 It's a
00:10:32 --> 00:10:32 thrilling
00:10:32 --> 00:10:33 prospect.
00:10:35 --> 00:10:35 The fourth
00:10:35 --> 00:10:36 benefit is
00:10:36 --> 00:10:36 in verses
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 3 to
00:10:37 --> 00:10:37 8.
00:10:37 --> 00:10:37 I'm going
00:10:37 --> 00:10:38 to slow
00:10:38 --> 00:10:38 down a
00:10:38 --> 00:10:39 little bit
