00:00:17 --> 00:00:22 Okay, 1977. Some of us weren't born in those days, but a lot of us were.
00:00:22 --> 00:00:29 NASA launched two space probes, Voyager 1 and the other one called Voyager 2.
00:00:30 --> 00:00:38 And it was the purpose of the space probes was to study the outer planets and the interstellar space beyond the sun.
00:00:39 --> 00:00:43 Both space probes are still circulating up there in the Netherlands somewhere.
00:00:45 --> 00:00:52 Apparently Voyager 1 at the moment is approximately 24 billion kilometres from the Earth right now.
00:00:52 --> 00:00:55 24 billion kilometres, give or take a few million, I think, in there somewhere.
00:00:56 --> 00:00:58 But NASA knows where they are.
00:00:58 --> 00:01:07 Now, interesting, both space probes carried a gold-plated audiovisual disk
00:01:07 --> 00:01:16 in the event that either space probe was found by intelligent life forms out there.
00:01:16 --> 00:01:26 And so the disk carried photos of Earth, photos of life forms of Earth, a range of scientific information,
00:01:27 --> 00:01:33 spoken greetings from a whole heap of languages, a personal greeting from the United States President,
00:01:33 --> 00:01:37 Jimmy Carter, also the United Nations General Secretary,
00:01:37 --> 00:01:45 a bunch of sounds from the Earth that included sounds of whales, a baby crying,
00:01:46 --> 00:01:50 waves breaking on a shore, things like that, things that would want to keep you away from the place, really, probably.
00:01:52 --> 00:01:52 Music.
00:01:53 --> 00:01:58 A collection of music from various cultures was also included and played,
00:01:58 --> 00:02:02 and still apparently being boomed out there into the universe somewhere.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:06 And the music was interesting, what they included.
00:02:06 --> 00:02:11 30 years after the launch of the space probes,
00:02:11 --> 00:02:17 one of the members of the project team reflected on the choice of music and said this,
00:02:17 --> 00:02:22 I thought of Beethoven's Cavatina from the string quartet,
00:02:23 --> 00:02:31 this great, beautiful, sad piece of music of which Beethoven had written in the margin
00:02:31 --> 00:02:37 the word sensucht, which is German for longing.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:43 Part of what we wanted to capture in this Voyager project
00:02:43 --> 00:02:49 was the great longing that humans experience.
00:02:51 --> 00:02:52 Longing.
00:02:54 --> 00:02:58 It's a word that captures the restlessness of the human heart.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:04 Even in our society, as formal religion recedes,
00:03:05 --> 00:03:08 thirst for spirituality grows.
00:03:08 --> 00:03:13 In fact, there is more spiritual longing in society now
00:03:13 --> 00:03:17 than there has been in the previous three decades.
00:03:18 --> 00:03:21 This spiritual longing that is there,
00:03:22 --> 00:03:23 restless in the human heart,
00:03:24 --> 00:03:26 is a thirst for purpose,
00:03:27 --> 00:03:30 of satisfaction, of contentment, fulfillment.
00:03:30 --> 00:03:35 So if you've just joined us for the first time right now,
00:03:35 --> 00:03:38 or just tuning in after a little bit of a break,
00:03:38 --> 00:03:42 we are working our way through the early chapters of John's Gospel
00:03:42 --> 00:03:49 and discovering the abundant life that Jesus Christ offers.
00:03:50 --> 00:03:52 Last week, we're in John chapter 3,
00:03:52 --> 00:03:55 as Jesus engages with a bloke called Nicodemus.
00:03:55 --> 00:04:00 Now, Nicodemus was one of the up-and-coming in society.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:05 Today, in John 4, a Samaritan woman,
00:04:06 --> 00:04:10 one of the down and the out in society.
00:04:11 --> 00:04:14 And as the beginning of the chapter sees,
00:04:14 --> 00:04:19 Jesus is tired, he's hot, he's dusty from his journey,
00:04:20 --> 00:04:22 and he confronts this woman at a well and says,
00:04:22 --> 00:04:26 give me a drink, and he never gets it.
00:04:28 --> 00:04:31 Instead, he offers her life-giving water.
00:04:32 --> 00:04:34 He offers deep satisfaction in life,
00:04:34 --> 00:04:38 living water for the thirsty, for the longing soul,
00:04:38 --> 00:04:41 for Nicodemus, and for the Samaritan woman,
00:04:41 --> 00:04:45 for you and for me, for all people.
00:04:46 --> 00:04:47 And to get the living water,
00:04:47 --> 00:04:49 there are four things we need to understand,
00:04:49 --> 00:04:52 and that's the outline in your Sir Paul's app this morning.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:52 Four things.
00:04:52 --> 00:04:55 Firstly, we need to understand the living water
00:04:55 --> 00:04:56 that he offers is a surprise.
00:04:56 --> 00:05:00 Verse 9, the woman is surprised that Jesus is talking to her.
00:05:00 --> 00:05:03 And in verse 27, the disciples are surprised
00:05:03 --> 00:05:05 that he's talking with her.
00:05:05 --> 00:05:09 The surprise here is that Jesus reaches
00:05:09 --> 00:05:13 across social, cultural, religious barriers
00:05:13 --> 00:05:14 to engage with this woman.
00:05:15 --> 00:05:16 That's the surprise.
00:05:16 --> 00:05:21 The Samaritans and Jews were complete enemies.
00:05:21 --> 00:05:25 And at this time, the Jews regarded Samaritans
00:05:25 --> 00:05:29 as racial, inferior, and religious heretics.
00:05:29 --> 00:05:32 They had no association at all.
00:05:32 --> 00:05:33 So at the beginning of the text,
00:05:33 --> 00:05:36 we see that Jesus says he has to go via this way.
00:05:37 --> 00:05:38 He didn't have to go that way.
00:05:38 --> 00:05:40 He chose to go this way.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:42 He chose to be in Samaria.
00:05:42 --> 00:05:47 Jews in his day completely went around that area.
00:05:50 --> 00:05:52 Also, there's a gender issue here.
00:05:54 --> 00:05:58 Women had very low status across all the cultures
00:05:58 --> 00:05:59 of the first century.
00:06:00 --> 00:06:03 And so, and again, verse 28, the disciples were surprised
00:06:03 --> 00:06:05 he's talking with a woman in public.
00:06:05 --> 00:06:12 But the big issue is not that she's just a Samaritan
00:06:12 --> 00:06:13 and that she's a woman,
00:06:14 --> 00:06:16 but that she's a particular Samaritan woman.
00:06:18 --> 00:06:22 Every commentator mentions that what is weird here
00:06:22 --> 00:06:26 is that she is drawing water alone,
00:06:27 --> 00:06:31 which was a social activity
00:06:31 --> 00:06:34 for women in the first century.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:38 This woman is a social outcast.
00:06:40 --> 00:06:42 In verse 6, we are told Jesus,
00:06:42 --> 00:06:45 we are told Jesus arrives at the well at noon.
00:06:50 --> 00:06:54 The women gathered water at the beginning of the day
00:06:54 --> 00:06:55 and the end of the day.
00:06:55 --> 00:07:01 She is deliberately going to the well
00:07:01 --> 00:07:02 in the middle of the day
00:07:02 --> 00:07:04 to avoid all contact,
00:07:04 --> 00:07:05 even with her own people.
00:07:10 --> 00:07:11 She's an outcast.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:12 Not an introvert.
00:07:12 --> 00:07:13 She's an outcast.
00:07:15 --> 00:07:17 And Jesus reaches across every barrier
00:07:17 --> 00:07:19 that would be put up against them.
00:07:19 --> 00:07:20 The moral, the religious, the gender,
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 the racial barriers,
00:07:22 --> 00:07:24 they mean nothing to him.
00:07:25 --> 00:07:27 This is typical of Jesus.
00:07:28 --> 00:07:30 Why does he keep doing it?
00:07:31 --> 00:07:34 Because the living water that he offers
00:07:34 --> 00:07:36 is not based on merit.
00:07:37 --> 00:07:38 It's based on grace.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:41 Doesn't matter who you are,
00:07:42 --> 00:07:42 what you've done,
00:07:42 --> 00:07:43 what your cultural roots are,
00:07:43 --> 00:07:45 what your worldview is,
00:07:45 --> 00:07:49 anyone at any time can meet him.
00:07:49 --> 00:07:50 That's the first thing.
00:07:50 --> 00:07:51 The second thing we need to understand
00:07:51 --> 00:07:53 is that this living water that he offers
00:07:53 --> 00:07:55 is an offer of ultimate satisfaction.
00:07:55 --> 00:07:59 Living water comes to us by grace
00:07:59 --> 00:08:02 and what we receive
00:08:02 --> 00:08:05 is ultimate satisfaction.
00:08:06 --> 00:08:07 Now, Central Australia,
00:08:08 --> 00:08:09 for those who have ever wandered out there,
00:08:10 --> 00:08:13 would discover that it's a very arid environment,
00:08:13 --> 00:08:17 which is why most of the population in this country,
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 the vast majority,
00:08:18 --> 00:08:20 live on the coastal fringe,
00:08:20 --> 00:08:22 because at least we get access to water.
00:08:23 --> 00:08:26 Very few people in Australia
00:08:26 --> 00:08:31 have ever experienced desperate thirst.
00:08:32 --> 00:08:33 Desperate thirst.
00:08:33 --> 00:08:36 Life-threatening thirst.
00:08:37 --> 00:08:39 We walk around with these things everywhere.
00:08:39 --> 00:08:41 We, you know,
00:08:41 --> 00:08:43 I go to the tap and I can fill it up.
00:08:44 --> 00:08:45 It flows.
00:08:47 --> 00:08:48 The image of living water
00:08:48 --> 00:08:51 is much more vivid for this woman at the well
00:08:51 --> 00:08:54 and others in our world
00:08:54 --> 00:08:55 than it is for most of us.
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 But it's an important image.
00:08:57 --> 00:09:02 The human body is about 66% water.
00:09:02 --> 00:09:05 Muscles are 97% water.
00:09:06 --> 00:09:08 Blood is 83% water.
00:09:08 --> 00:09:10 Our lungs are 90% water,
00:09:10 --> 00:09:13 which, you know, drowning.
00:09:13 --> 00:09:14 What's, I don't know what,
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 I don't understand that.
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 It's just adding a little bit more.
00:09:18 --> 00:09:18 I mean,
00:09:18 --> 00:09:23 and brains are 95% water,
00:09:23 --> 00:09:25 which is quite self-explanatory, really.
00:09:27 --> 00:09:30 Survival guides speak about the rule of three.
00:09:32 --> 00:09:34 We can survive three minutes without oxygen,
00:09:35 --> 00:09:37 three days without water,
00:09:37 --> 00:09:39 three weeks without food,
00:09:40 --> 00:09:41 and tragically,
00:09:41 --> 00:09:43 probably only three hours without technology.
00:09:43 --> 00:09:49 We have a more immediate need for water
00:09:49 --> 00:09:50 than we do for food.
00:09:51 --> 00:09:55 We die of dehydration before starvation.
00:09:57 --> 00:10:00 Because we are mostly water,
00:10:01 --> 00:10:03 to die from dehydration
00:10:03 --> 00:10:06 means that every part of our body
00:10:06 --> 00:10:09 cries out in searing pain.
00:10:13 --> 00:10:15 torment
00:10:15 --> 00:10:17 every part of the body
00:10:17 --> 00:10:21 until death mercifully comes to us.
00:10:23 --> 00:10:26 And Jesus says to this woman at the well,
00:10:26 --> 00:10:29 I have something that your soul needs
00:10:29 --> 00:10:32 more than your body needs water.
00:10:36 --> 00:10:38 Going to any other source
00:10:38 --> 00:10:40 to quench what your soul needs
00:10:40 --> 00:10:42 will only cause
00:10:42 --> 00:10:45 the thirst to go deeper,
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 to endure longer.
00:10:49 --> 00:10:50 So verse 13 is his promise.
00:10:50 --> 00:10:52 Everyone who drinks this water
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 will be thirsty again,
00:10:53 --> 00:10:55 but whoever drinks the water that I give them
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 will never thirst.
00:10:57 --> 00:10:57 Indeed,
00:10:57 --> 00:10:59 the water that I give them
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 will become in them
00:11:00 --> 00:11:02 a spring of water
00:11:02 --> 00:11:04 welling up to eternal life.
00:11:06 --> 00:11:08 Jesus here is promising
00:11:08 --> 00:11:09 a purpose,
00:11:09 --> 00:11:09 a love,
00:11:10 --> 00:11:10 a peace,
00:11:10 --> 00:11:10 a hope,
00:11:10 --> 00:11:11 a beauty
00:11:11 --> 00:11:14 that permanently wells up
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 from within.
00:11:17 --> 00:11:17 You see,
00:11:17 --> 00:11:18 in Jesus we get
00:11:18 --> 00:11:20 a spiritual love
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 and a peace
00:11:21 --> 00:11:21 and acceptance,
00:11:21 --> 00:11:22 a beauty
00:11:22 --> 00:11:24 that won't get lost,
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 plugged up,
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 dry out
00:11:28 --> 00:11:32 when things in life
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 don't go the way
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 that we want them to.
00:11:34 --> 00:11:38 Friends,
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 what Jesus is offering here,
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 and I think this is crucial
00:11:40 --> 00:11:40 if you're someone
00:11:40 --> 00:11:42 who calls yourself a Christian,
00:11:42 --> 00:11:43 what Jesus is offering here
00:11:43 --> 00:11:44 is so much more
00:11:44 --> 00:11:46 than the forgiveness of sins.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:47 It's not less than
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 the forgiveness of sins,
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 but it's so much more
00:11:49 --> 00:11:51 than the forgiveness of sins.
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 So the third thing
00:11:54 --> 00:11:55 to understand
00:11:55 --> 00:11:56 is for most people
00:11:56 --> 00:11:59 it takes several steps
00:11:59 --> 00:12:01 before we experience
00:12:01 --> 00:12:03 and receive living water.
00:12:03 --> 00:12:05 You might have noticed
00:12:05 --> 00:12:06 as Nick was reading out
00:12:06 --> 00:12:08 this is a long interaction
00:12:08 --> 00:12:09 between Jesus
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 and this woman.
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 Bit by bit
00:12:13 --> 00:12:15 Jesus moves her
00:12:15 --> 00:12:17 from spiritual indifference
00:12:17 --> 00:12:19 into spiritual life
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 and vitality.
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 She turns up at the well
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 not looking,
00:12:24 --> 00:12:26 not looking for it,
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 though eventually
00:12:28 --> 00:12:30 telling everyone about it.
00:12:31 --> 00:12:32 I think most Christians
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 will testify to a similar
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 work of God
00:12:34 --> 00:12:34 in their lives.
00:12:36 --> 00:12:38 This woman is alone
00:12:38 --> 00:12:39 at the well
00:12:39 --> 00:12:41 because of the mistakes
00:12:41 --> 00:12:41 and the failures
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 of her life.
00:12:43 --> 00:12:45 And it is moments
00:12:45 --> 00:12:45 like these
00:12:45 --> 00:12:46 that most people
00:12:46 --> 00:12:48 become open
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 to the bigger questions
00:12:49 --> 00:12:49 of life.
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 They start to feel
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 alone themselves
00:12:52 --> 00:12:55 for a variety of reasons,
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 feel alone
00:12:56 --> 00:12:57 and open to the questions,
00:12:58 --> 00:12:59 open to a bit of soul searching
00:12:59 --> 00:12:59 and questioning.
00:13:00 --> 00:13:01 And Jesus then starts
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 to push her intellectually.
00:13:04 --> 00:13:06 Christianity is far more
00:13:06 --> 00:13:08 than simple intellectual questions
00:13:08 --> 00:13:09 about the meaning of life,
00:13:09 --> 00:13:10 but it's not less than that.
00:13:13 --> 00:13:15 You don't have a real encounter
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 with Jesus
00:13:16 --> 00:13:18 unless you engage your brain,
00:13:19 --> 00:13:21 all 95% water of it.
00:13:21 --> 00:13:25 But in verse 15,
00:13:27 --> 00:13:28 it's as far as she can get.
00:13:30 --> 00:13:30 The woman said to him,
00:13:31 --> 00:13:32 sir, give me this water
00:13:32 --> 00:13:34 so I won't get thirsty
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 and have to keep coming here
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 to draw water.
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 Jesus is talking about
00:13:39 --> 00:13:39 living water
00:13:39 --> 00:13:40 and she wants running water.
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 She doesn't want to keep
00:13:45 --> 00:13:46 coming to the well.
00:13:46 --> 00:13:46 Jesus is talking about
00:13:46 --> 00:13:47 spiritual thirst,
00:13:48 --> 00:13:48 but she is still,
00:13:49 --> 00:13:50 on the real issue here,
00:13:50 --> 00:13:52 is her physical thirst.
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 She wants to be
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 the first person in Samaria
00:13:55 --> 00:13:58 with taps in the bungalow.
00:14:03 --> 00:14:05 She's with Jesus
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 up to this point,
00:14:07 --> 00:14:10 but still she can't see
00:14:10 --> 00:14:13 her deep, deep spiritual thirst.
00:14:15 --> 00:14:16 And that's when Jesus,
00:14:16 --> 00:14:18 who appears to change the subject,
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 but doesn't,
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 go get your husband.
00:14:26 --> 00:14:28 He's helping her to see
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 you are deeply,
00:14:30 --> 00:14:30 deeply,
00:14:30 --> 00:14:31 spiritually dehydrated.
00:14:33 --> 00:14:34 Verse 17,
00:14:35 --> 00:14:36 Jesus said,
00:14:36 --> 00:14:37 you are right
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 when you say
00:14:38 --> 00:14:38 you have no husband.
00:14:38 --> 00:14:39 The fact is
00:14:39 --> 00:14:40 you have had five husbands
00:14:40 --> 00:14:42 and the man you now have
00:14:42 --> 00:14:44 is not your husband.
00:14:44 --> 00:14:47 She is deeply thirsty
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 for acceptance,
00:14:49 --> 00:14:50 for significance,
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 for security,
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 for love.
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 She is deeply,
00:14:54 --> 00:14:55 spiritually thirsty,
00:14:55 --> 00:14:56 but she is drinking
00:14:56 --> 00:14:56 from the well
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 of relationships
00:14:57 --> 00:14:58 and approval,
00:14:59 --> 00:15:00 security and sex,
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 and it will never satisfy.
00:15:02 --> 00:15:03 It's like dying
00:15:03 --> 00:15:04 from thirst
00:15:04 --> 00:15:05 and deciding
00:15:05 --> 00:15:06 to drink diesel
00:15:06 --> 00:15:07 to satisfy it.
00:15:08 --> 00:15:09 It never will.
00:15:09 --> 00:15:12 this woman,
00:15:13 --> 00:15:16 like every single human being,
00:15:16 --> 00:15:18 is a person of faith.
00:15:19 --> 00:15:20 The question is,
00:15:21 --> 00:15:23 what is the direction
00:15:23 --> 00:15:24 of your faith?
00:15:25 --> 00:15:27 What are you trusting in
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 for your security,
00:15:28 --> 00:15:29 for your acceptance,
00:15:29 --> 00:15:30 for your love,
00:15:30 --> 00:15:30 for your hope,
00:15:31 --> 00:15:31 for your beauty,
00:15:31 --> 00:15:32 for your satisfaction,
00:15:32 --> 00:15:33 for your purpose?
00:15:33 --> 00:15:34 You see,
00:15:34 --> 00:15:35 becoming a Christian
00:15:35 --> 00:15:37 is simply transferring
00:15:37 --> 00:15:38 from one thing,
00:15:38 --> 00:15:39 even a good thing
00:15:39 --> 00:15:40 that God has given us,
00:15:40 --> 00:15:42 to the ultimate one.
00:15:43 --> 00:15:44 That's what it is.
00:15:44 --> 00:15:45 It's a transfer of faith.
00:15:48 --> 00:15:50 In the Samaritan woman's case,
00:15:50 --> 00:15:52 it is a transfer from men,
00:15:53 --> 00:15:56 but it could be
00:15:56 --> 00:15:58 a multitude of things for us.
00:15:59 --> 00:15:59 Sex,
00:15:59 --> 00:16:00 career,
00:16:00 --> 00:16:01 appearance,
00:16:01 --> 00:16:02 acceptance by friends,
00:16:03 --> 00:16:04 social networks,
00:16:04 --> 00:16:05 political causes,
00:16:05 --> 00:16:06 romance,
00:16:06 --> 00:16:06 money,
00:16:06 --> 00:16:07 wealth,
00:16:07 --> 00:16:07 control,
00:16:07 --> 00:16:08 comfort,
00:16:09 --> 00:16:09 happy children.
00:16:12 --> 00:16:14 We will never drink deep
00:16:14 --> 00:16:15 from the living water
00:16:15 --> 00:16:16 Jesus offers
00:16:16 --> 00:16:18 until we see
00:16:18 --> 00:16:19 that where we are drinking
00:16:19 --> 00:16:19 from now
00:16:19 --> 00:16:22 has an inability
00:16:22 --> 00:16:24 to truly satisfy.
00:16:27 --> 00:16:29 Jesus is convicting
00:16:29 --> 00:16:30 this woman here.
00:16:30 --> 00:16:31 He's not condemning her.
00:16:31 --> 00:16:32 He's pointing out
00:16:32 --> 00:16:34 the false masters
00:16:34 --> 00:16:36 and the pretend saviors
00:16:36 --> 00:16:37 that will never satisfy.
00:16:39 --> 00:16:40 So I've got to ask you,
00:16:40 --> 00:16:41 friends,
00:16:41 --> 00:16:41 just briefly,
00:16:43 --> 00:16:44 has Jesus been trying
00:16:44 --> 00:16:45 to get you alone
00:16:45 --> 00:16:48 over maybe the last year,
00:16:49 --> 00:16:50 two years,
00:16:50 --> 00:16:51 however long,
00:16:51 --> 00:16:52 even the last number of weeks,
00:16:52 --> 00:16:54 to get you alone
00:16:54 --> 00:16:55 to have a similar conversation
00:16:55 --> 00:16:56 with you?
00:16:58 --> 00:16:59 That the deep dissatisfaction
00:16:59 --> 00:17:00 you have in life,
00:17:00 --> 00:17:02 the miserable experience
00:17:02 --> 00:17:03 you have waking up
00:17:03 --> 00:17:04 day by day
00:17:04 --> 00:17:05 is because you're trusting
00:17:05 --> 00:17:06 in pseudo-saviors.
00:17:07 --> 00:17:08 You're looking to the happiness
00:17:08 --> 00:17:09 of your children
