00:00:00 --> 00:00:02 Good morning friends, it's great to be here at church with you this morning.
00:00:04 --> 00:00:09 We as a church have a vision to grow, St Paul's has a vision to grow.
00:00:10 --> 00:00:16 It's a vision which was put before you a bit over two years ago, or actually about two years ago.
00:00:17 --> 00:00:20 It's not the only time you've had one of these visions, you've had them in the past.
00:00:21 --> 00:00:25 The vision fundamentally is not for people to come from other churches to this church,
00:00:25 --> 00:00:28 but it's a vision for people to come to Christ.
00:00:28 --> 00:00:35 And as you look at that vision for 10 congregations of 100 core members in about 10 years,
00:00:36 --> 00:00:40 when you look at that, do you think it's possible?
00:00:41 --> 00:00:42 Do you think it's possible?
00:00:45 --> 00:00:48 Some of you will be sceptical because of the world in which we live.
00:00:48 --> 00:00:50 It's going further and further away from Christianity.
00:00:50 --> 00:00:59 Some of you are weary of bearing witness to Jesus and having so many rejections,
00:00:59 --> 00:01:00 and you wonder whether it's possible.
00:01:01 --> 00:01:04 Some of you are pumped up and think it's absolutely possible,
00:01:04 --> 00:01:08 because what we'll do is we just bludgeon people until they become,
00:01:08 --> 00:01:10 we just annoy them until they turn to Christ.
00:01:10 --> 00:01:19 And so for those of you who are not discouraged,
00:01:20 --> 00:01:22 I think maybe you should be.
00:01:23 --> 00:01:25 And those of you who are,
00:01:25 --> 00:01:29 these are words of encouragement and comfort here from the Lord Jesus.
00:01:30 --> 00:01:34 And so grab your Bibles and turn to John 16.
00:01:35 --> 00:01:37 You need your Bibles open in front of you.
00:01:37 --> 00:01:39 I'd like you to follow along with me.
00:01:39 --> 00:01:42 John 16, I'm going to focus primarily on verses 5 to 15.
00:01:44 --> 00:01:46 And it was great to have the rest of it read,
00:01:46 --> 00:01:49 but we're going to focus on 5 to 15.
00:01:49 --> 00:01:53 So we're still with Jesus and the 11 disciples
00:01:53 --> 00:01:55 in the last few hours of Jesus' life
00:01:55 --> 00:01:57 in what is known as the farewell discourse.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:03 For the disciples, it seems that it has been mostly bad news up until this point.
00:02:03 --> 00:02:10 Verse 5 indicates that all this talk of Jesus' impending departure of the Father
00:02:10 --> 00:02:16 via the cross has reduced the disciples to virtual silence.
00:02:17 --> 00:02:19 Or as verse 6 says,
00:02:19 --> 00:02:21 They are filled with grief.
00:02:21 --> 00:02:27 The disciples are so self-absorbed that they are not really asking sympathetic questions
00:02:27 --> 00:02:31 about what Jesus is doing, where he's going, and why.
00:02:32 --> 00:02:34 They are so concerned about their problems,
00:02:35 --> 00:02:37 their own feeling of abandonment,
00:02:38 --> 00:02:40 their sense of impending crisis and doom,
00:02:40 --> 00:02:42 that they do not really listen.
00:02:42 --> 00:02:45 They grieve for themselves.
00:02:45 --> 00:02:48 And yet in verse 7, Jesus says,
00:02:48 --> 00:02:49 But I tell you the truth,
00:02:50 --> 00:02:53 it is for your good that I'm going away.
00:02:54 --> 00:02:57 Unless I go away, the counsellor will not come to you,
00:02:58 --> 00:03:01 but if I go, I will send him to you.
00:03:02 --> 00:03:05 Jesus is saying to these grieving disciples,
00:03:06 --> 00:03:07 feeling the sense of abandonment,
00:03:07 --> 00:03:12 it's going to be better for you once I return to the Father,
00:03:12 --> 00:03:15 because once I've gone, the Holy Spirit will come.
00:03:16 --> 00:03:17 How is that possible?
00:03:18 --> 00:03:20 How is it going to be better for them?
00:03:21 --> 00:03:24 I mean, is this just another one of those good news, bad news jokes,
00:03:24 --> 00:03:27 where the good news isn't really the good news after all?
00:03:28 --> 00:03:31 Like the one I heard of the doctor who visited a patient after surgery
00:03:31 --> 00:03:32 and said to him,
00:03:32 --> 00:03:34 I've got some good news and some bad news.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:38 The bad news is we amputated the wrong leg.
00:03:39 --> 00:03:41 The good news is the bad leg is improving.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:46 Now, the good news actually isn't good news.
00:03:46 --> 00:03:49 It's just simply designed to stake the sting out of the bad news.
00:03:49 --> 00:03:53 And is that what Jesus is doing here in verse 7?
00:03:55 --> 00:03:56 Jesus says,
00:03:56 --> 00:03:58 I think at least a couple of things in this section
00:03:58 --> 00:04:00 that makes the coming of the Holy Spirit good news.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:03 This is really good news.
00:04:03 --> 00:04:05 This is especially important for grieving disciples
00:04:05 --> 00:04:09 who have heard a lot of bad news up until this point.
00:04:09 --> 00:04:12 Not only is Jesus departing,
00:04:12 --> 00:04:16 but they've just heard, as we looked at last week when Sam was preaching,
00:04:17 --> 00:04:22 that when Jesus departs, the world is going to hate them for his sake.
00:04:23 --> 00:04:25 I mean, does it get any worse than this?
00:04:25 --> 00:04:29 And so here's the good news in the coming of the Holy Spirit in this section.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:32 Number one, the Holy Spirit will convict the world.
00:04:33 --> 00:04:36 And number two, the Holy Spirit will minister to the disciples.
00:04:38 --> 00:04:41 We saw last week that with the departure of Jesus,
00:04:41 --> 00:04:44 it will be the disciples who will bear witness to him.
00:04:45 --> 00:04:49 But it will be tough because the world is opposed to Jesus.
00:04:49 --> 00:04:51 The word is, they will hate you for me.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:56 Jesus is, in effect, passing on the baton of the task
00:04:56 --> 00:04:59 of telling the world about him to his disciples.
00:05:00 --> 00:05:04 But the good news here is they're not going to do it alone.
00:05:05 --> 00:05:07 They're not alone in this task.
00:05:07 --> 00:05:10 In fact, I think it would actually be more accurate
00:05:10 --> 00:05:13 to say that Jesus is passing on the baton,
00:05:13 --> 00:05:19 the task of telling the world about Jesus to the Holy Spirit.
00:05:19 --> 00:05:24 So in chapter 15, verse 26, just flick back a little bit,
00:05:25 --> 00:05:25 Jesus says,
00:05:25 --> 00:05:29 When the counsellor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father,
00:05:29 --> 00:05:31 the Spirit of truth, who goes out from the Father,
00:05:32 --> 00:05:34 he will testify about me.
00:05:36 --> 00:05:39 So the one who is going to testify is no longer Jesus,
00:05:40 --> 00:05:41 but it is the Spirit.
00:05:41 --> 00:05:45 And then if you look into chapter 16, verse 7,
00:05:46 --> 00:05:48 But I tell you the truth, it is for your good that I'm going away.
00:05:48 --> 00:05:52 Unless I go away, the counsellor will not come to you,
00:05:52 --> 00:05:54 but if I go, I will send him to you.
00:05:54 --> 00:05:59 And when he comes, he will convict the world of guilt
00:05:59 --> 00:06:03 in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment.
00:06:04 --> 00:06:07 That little word convict in verse 8,
00:06:07 --> 00:06:10 I think is the key to understanding verses 8 to 11.
00:06:10 --> 00:06:14 Convict means to bring to light, or it means to expose.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:20 And it has the idea of an exposure which puts to shame.
00:06:20 --> 00:06:26 So the aim of the Holy Spirit's work is not to produce a guilty verdict,
00:06:27 --> 00:06:30 because that is already there according to John chapter 3.
00:06:32 --> 00:06:38 The aim is to help us to see the perilous condition in which we stand before God.
00:06:38 --> 00:06:43 It's like a bright spotlight shining into a dark night,
00:06:43 --> 00:06:48 cutting through the darkness and revealing whatever was hidden in the darkness.
00:06:49 --> 00:06:54 The Spirit comes to shine light into the world.
00:06:54 --> 00:07:04 But what we need to see is it happens as the disciples testify to what Jesus has done,
00:07:04 --> 00:07:08 that the Spirit is doing his work of convicting and exposing the world.
00:07:08 --> 00:07:10 So I'll read again from chapter 15, verse 26.
00:07:11 --> 00:07:15 When the counsellor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father,
00:07:15 --> 00:07:18 the Spirit of truth, who goes out from the Father,
00:07:18 --> 00:07:21 he will testify about me.
00:07:21 --> 00:07:24 And then look at the very next verse.
00:07:25 --> 00:07:31 And you also must testify, for you have been with me from the beginning.
00:07:32 --> 00:07:34 And so the way that the Spirit will convict the world
00:07:34 --> 00:07:38 is as the disciples bear witness to Jesus.
00:07:40 --> 00:07:44 Verses 8 to 11 are the central verses of this section,
00:07:44 --> 00:07:47 and they reveal how the Spirit will convict the world.
00:07:47 --> 00:07:51 He will point the spotlight, if you like,
00:07:51 --> 00:07:53 and he will expose three areas.
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 The attitudes of the world,
00:07:57 --> 00:07:58 the actions of the world,
00:07:58 --> 00:08:01 and the accountability of the world.
00:08:02 --> 00:08:03 Firstly, when the Spirit comes,
00:08:04 --> 00:08:05 he will convict the world, verse 9,
00:08:05 --> 00:08:07 in regard to sin,
00:08:07 --> 00:08:10 because men do not believe in me.
00:08:12 --> 00:08:14 Sin is where we place ourselves
00:08:14 --> 00:08:17 at the centre of the universe.
00:08:17 --> 00:08:18 It's an attitude that says,
00:08:18 --> 00:08:19 I am the king.
00:08:20 --> 00:08:24 Sin doesn't recognise that Jesus is God's appointed king.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:27 And Jesus says that he will send the Spirit,
00:08:28 --> 00:08:30 and he will be at work in the world,
00:08:30 --> 00:08:34 bringing people to a self-conscious recognition
00:08:34 --> 00:08:36 of personal and collective guilt.
00:08:38 --> 00:08:41 The Spirit will expose the way people reject God,
00:08:41 --> 00:08:44 and the way that they have rejected Jesus.
00:08:45 --> 00:08:47 That they do not believe his claims,
00:08:47 --> 00:08:49 that they do not accept his teaching,
00:08:50 --> 00:08:52 that they do not turn to him for salvation
00:08:52 --> 00:08:55 or discern their need of him.
00:08:55 --> 00:08:57 The Spirit will come,
00:08:58 --> 00:08:59 and as disciples speak,
00:09:00 --> 00:09:03 he will convict the world of their sin,
00:09:03 --> 00:09:04 of rejecting Jesus.
00:09:04 --> 00:09:08 Secondly, the Spirit will expose the actions of the world,
00:09:08 --> 00:09:11 and this has to do with the moral side of sin.
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 In verse 10,
00:09:12 --> 00:09:13 in regard to righteousness,
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 because I am going to the Father,
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 where you can see me no longer.
00:09:19 --> 00:09:20 It is quite amazing that,
00:09:21 --> 00:09:23 as you read through John's Gospel,
00:09:23 --> 00:09:26 to see how often Jesus clashed
00:09:26 --> 00:09:28 with religious people,
00:09:28 --> 00:09:30 with people who thought that
00:09:30 --> 00:09:31 they were doing pretty much okay.
00:09:31 --> 00:09:34 But as Jesus interacts with them,
00:09:35 --> 00:09:37 what he does is he exposes them
00:09:37 --> 00:09:38 as to being complete fakes,
00:09:38 --> 00:09:39 as being shams.
00:09:41 --> 00:09:44 And so the conviction in regard to righteousness here
00:09:44 --> 00:09:46 has an ironic edge to it.
00:09:46 --> 00:09:47 People of the world
00:09:47 --> 00:09:50 do not normally think of themselves
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 as lost,
00:09:52 --> 00:09:52 as sinners.
00:09:53 --> 00:09:55 We struggle with that.
00:09:57 --> 00:10:00 We have a much better view of ourselves
00:10:00 --> 00:10:01 than we ought.
00:10:03 --> 00:10:05 We naturally think of ourselves
00:10:05 --> 00:10:07 as essentially righteous
00:10:07 --> 00:10:13 until you have Jesus standing beside you.
00:10:15 --> 00:10:17 I used to play tennis every week.
00:10:19 --> 00:10:19 And after a while,
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 I started to think
00:10:20 --> 00:10:22 I wasn't too bad at the game.
00:10:22 --> 00:10:24 When you play with people
00:10:24 --> 00:10:26 who are 10 to 15 years older than you,
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 it's not hard to think,
00:10:27 --> 00:10:28 generally.
00:10:28 --> 00:10:32 You pick your opponents well.
00:10:34 --> 00:10:36 I knew I wasn't the best of the game.
00:10:36 --> 00:10:37 I could see that.
00:10:38 --> 00:10:41 But I certainly had my fair share of on days
00:10:41 --> 00:10:43 and a few off days as well.
00:10:44 --> 00:10:46 It wasn't until I did wedding prep
00:10:46 --> 00:10:47 with a guy once,
00:10:47 --> 00:10:49 I went there before going to tennis,
00:10:50 --> 00:10:51 and I had my tennis gear,
00:10:51 --> 00:10:51 and he said,
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 you play tennis?
00:10:52 --> 00:10:53 I said, yeah, I do.
00:10:53 --> 00:10:55 And he said, fantastic.
00:10:55 --> 00:10:55 Fantastic.
00:10:55 --> 00:10:56 After a few weeks,
00:10:56 --> 00:10:58 he said, I play the occasional game of tennis.
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 We should play one day.
00:11:00 --> 00:11:00 Awesome.
00:11:01 --> 00:11:03 So this guy was younger than me,
00:11:03 --> 00:11:04 so I thought at the very least,
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 I'll get some exercise.
00:11:06 --> 00:11:08 And so we get up there,
00:11:08 --> 00:11:10 and the first service told me
00:11:10 --> 00:11:12 that I had made a grave mistake.
00:11:13 --> 00:11:15 This guy was an A-grade tennis player.
00:11:15 --> 00:11:18 And so I'm standing there.
00:11:18 --> 00:11:19 I'm seeing him serve.
00:11:20 --> 00:11:21 I know the ball's going to go to the right.
00:11:22 --> 00:11:24 He does a beautiful kick in his serve.
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 I dive to the right,
00:11:25 --> 00:11:26 and the ball goes to the left.
00:11:27 --> 00:11:28 There's no...
00:11:28 --> 00:11:28 What?
00:11:29 --> 00:11:31 This guy could make a tennis ball do magic.
00:11:31 --> 00:11:32 It was amazing.
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 Eventually, I'd just stand there
00:11:33 --> 00:11:35 and just let me watch you play.
00:11:36 --> 00:11:36 You know,
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 and in the end,
00:11:38 --> 00:11:39 he thrashed me.
00:11:39 --> 00:11:40 I got no point from him.
00:11:40 --> 00:11:42 He didn't even make a mistake
00:11:42 --> 00:11:44 in order for me to get a point.
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 He thrashed me.
00:11:46 --> 00:11:47 And so the next time,
00:11:47 --> 00:11:47 he said,
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 we should do this again someday.
00:11:48 --> 00:11:49 Yes.
00:11:51 --> 00:11:55 When I get over this demoralising defeat,
00:11:55 --> 00:11:55 I will do that.
00:11:56 --> 00:11:56 Next time,
00:11:57 --> 00:11:58 I brought in someone else,
00:11:58 --> 00:11:59 and we played doubles against him.
00:12:00 --> 00:12:02 And he thrashed us both.
00:12:02 --> 00:12:04 And so the way to handle that
00:12:04 --> 00:12:06 is just never invite him back again.
00:12:06 --> 00:12:08 And that's what we did.
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 You see,
00:12:10 --> 00:12:12 after playing with him
00:12:12 --> 00:12:13 for a very short time,
00:12:13 --> 00:12:15 I realised I wasn't such a hotshot.
00:12:16 --> 00:12:18 Perfection does that for you.
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 It exposes
00:12:20 --> 00:12:23 your weaknesses
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 and your inadequacies.
00:12:26 --> 00:12:27 And that is what
00:12:27 --> 00:12:28 the perfect life of Jesus did
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 with everyone he met.
00:12:29 --> 00:12:31 Compared with Jesus,
00:12:31 --> 00:12:33 even the good things that we do,
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 which are mixed with
00:12:34 --> 00:12:36 bad motives,
00:12:36 --> 00:12:37 are like filthy rags
00:12:37 --> 00:12:39 beside Jesus.
00:12:39 --> 00:12:41 Until a person
00:12:41 --> 00:12:42 who is satisfied
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 with their own righteousness
00:12:43 --> 00:12:45 perceives its inadequacy,
00:12:46 --> 00:12:47 its self-centredness,
00:12:47 --> 00:12:48 its shortcomings,
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 its imperfections,
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 it is difficult
00:12:51 --> 00:12:52 to perceive
00:12:52 --> 00:12:54 how the good news
00:12:54 --> 00:12:55 of the gospel
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 will ever be received
00:12:56 --> 00:12:58 as good news.
00:12:58 --> 00:13:01 The good news is
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 that in trusting Jesus,
00:13:02 --> 00:13:04 not only is our sin
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 placed on Jesus,
00:13:05 --> 00:13:07 but his perfect righteousness
00:13:07 --> 00:13:09 is placed on us.
00:13:09 --> 00:13:11 It becomes ours.
00:13:14 --> 00:13:15 But if it is just
00:13:15 --> 00:13:17 the work of the Holy Spirit
00:13:17 --> 00:13:17 to show up
00:13:17 --> 00:13:18 the false righteousness
00:13:18 --> 00:13:19 of the world,
00:13:20 --> 00:13:23 now that Jesus
00:13:23 --> 00:13:24 returned to the Father,
00:13:24 --> 00:13:25 what part do the disciples
00:13:25 --> 00:13:26 play in that?
00:13:26 --> 00:13:29 If we are walking
00:13:29 --> 00:13:29 with him
00:13:29 --> 00:13:30 and he's our partner
00:13:30 --> 00:13:31 in this,
00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 we know it is the Holy Spirit
00:13:33 --> 00:13:34 who's bare witness,
00:13:34 --> 00:13:35 but the disciples
00:13:35 --> 00:13:37 must also bear witness.
00:13:38 --> 00:13:39 In a sense,
00:13:39 --> 00:13:41 we join the Holy Spirit
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 in preserving
00:13:42 --> 00:13:44 the presence of Christ
00:13:44 --> 00:13:45 in our Christ-rejecting world.
00:13:47 --> 00:13:48 The Holy Spirit
00:13:48 --> 00:13:50 in part discharges
00:13:50 --> 00:13:51 his witnessing responsibility
00:13:51 --> 00:13:53 by transforming
00:13:53 --> 00:13:55 the righteousness
00:13:55 --> 00:13:57 of the disciples.
00:13:57 --> 00:13:59 The Holy Spirit
00:13:59 --> 00:13:59 works
00:13:59 --> 00:14:01 in the disciple
00:14:01 --> 00:14:01 of Jesus
00:14:01 --> 00:14:02 to produce
00:14:02 --> 00:14:03 deep
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 biblical
00:14:04 --> 00:14:05 righteousness
00:14:05 --> 00:14:08 which convicts
00:14:08 --> 00:14:08 the world
00:14:08 --> 00:14:10 of its unrighteousness.
00:14:13 --> 00:14:15 Our lives matter.
00:14:17 --> 00:14:18 Our righteousness
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 matters.
00:14:19 --> 00:14:22 the world
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 ought to be
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 convicted
00:14:24 --> 00:14:25 of their
00:14:25 --> 00:14:26 unrighteousness
00:14:26 --> 00:14:28 by our righteousness.
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 So whether it is
00:14:32 --> 00:14:32 through
00:14:32 --> 00:14:34 his own
00:14:34 --> 00:14:35 secret operation
00:14:35 --> 00:14:37 or through
00:14:37 --> 00:14:37 the disciples
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 of Jesus,
00:14:39 --> 00:14:40 the Spirit
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 is actively
00:14:41 --> 00:14:42 transforming.
00:14:45 --> 00:14:46 Through the disciples
00:14:46 --> 00:14:47 of Jesus,
00:14:47 --> 00:14:47 he's actively
00:14:47 --> 00:14:47 transforming,
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 he confronts
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 the world
00:14:49 --> 00:14:50 with the
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 inadequacy
00:14:51 --> 00:14:51 of its
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 own
00:14:52 --> 00:14:54 self-righteousness.
00:14:54 --> 00:14:55 The third
00:14:55 --> 00:14:56 exposing work
00:14:56 --> 00:14:56 of the Holy Spirit
00:14:56 --> 00:14:57 is that he will
00:14:57 --> 00:14:58 expose the world
00:14:58 --> 00:14:59 to accountability.
00:15:00 --> 00:15:01 People are not
00:15:01 --> 00:15:01 right with God
00:15:01 --> 00:15:02 because they have
00:15:02 --> 00:15:03 rejected Christ
00:15:03 --> 00:15:05 and therefore
00:15:05 --> 00:15:05 they deserve
00:15:05 --> 00:15:06 God's
00:15:06 --> 00:15:07 punishment.
00:15:08 --> 00:15:08 And the Holy Spirit's
00:15:08 --> 00:15:09 job is
00:15:09 --> 00:15:10 in effect
00:15:10 --> 00:15:11 to pull our
00:15:11 --> 00:15:11 heads out of
00:15:11 --> 00:15:12 the sand
00:15:12 --> 00:15:13 so that we can
00:15:13 --> 00:15:14 recognize
00:15:14 --> 00:15:15 the grave danger
00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 that we are in.
00:15:16 --> 00:15:18 the Holy Spirit
00:15:18 --> 00:15:19 helps us to see
00:15:19 --> 00:15:20 that we are on
00:15:20 --> 00:15:21 a collision course
00:15:21 --> 00:15:22 of judgment
00:15:22 --> 00:15:23 with God
00:15:23 --> 00:15:26 and that on
00:15:26 --> 00:15:27 that process
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 of that collision
00:15:28 --> 00:15:28 course
00:15:28 --> 00:15:29 that all our
00:15:29 --> 00:15:29 judgments
00:15:29 --> 00:15:31 about Christ
00:15:31 --> 00:15:32 and about God
00:15:32 --> 00:15:32 and about the
00:15:32 --> 00:15:33 spiritual realm
00:15:33 --> 00:15:34 and about life
00:15:34 --> 00:15:35 and death
00:15:35 --> 00:15:36 are all wrong
00:15:36 --> 00:15:37 judgments
00:15:37 --> 00:15:39 without the
00:15:39 --> 00:15:39 Spirit.
00:15:39 --> 00:15:43 And so how
00:15:43 --> 00:15:44 does the Spirit
00:15:44 --> 00:15:44 do that?

00:16:31 --> 00:16:33 who belongs to him
