00:02:27 --> 00:02:31 Well one thing about Aussies and Kiwis is they do like to have a bit of a go at each other.

00:02:34 --> 00:02:36 You get maligned on New Zealand TV as well.
00:02:38 --> 00:02:44 But one of the other similarities between Australians and Kiwis is their kind of DIY mentality.
00:02:45 --> 00:02:47 You know, you can do it yourself.
00:02:47 --> 00:02:49 We like to think that we can do it ourselves.
00:02:49 --> 00:02:55 Not so long ago in New Zealand there were endless DIY reality TV shows.
00:02:56 --> 00:02:59 I take it there was probably a similar kind of surge of them here.
00:02:59 --> 00:03:06 Where there'd be TV shows about home makeovers and renovations and you couldn't escape them.
00:03:06 --> 00:03:11 It seemed to be whatever channel you would turn to, these shows would be on.
00:03:12 --> 00:03:14 And it was quite painful really.
00:03:14 --> 00:03:16 I'm glad they've kind of got past that phase.
00:03:16 --> 00:03:22 But all of us seem to have this DIY attitude built into our DNA.
00:03:24 --> 00:03:27 And I don't think it's just blokes with their kind of handyman jobs.
00:03:28 --> 00:03:34 You know, they like to build their own deck or put out their own fence or renovate their own bathroom.
00:03:34 --> 00:03:35 Which takes months usually.
00:03:35 --> 00:03:40 But I think it's more that we simply want our own independence.
00:03:41 --> 00:03:43 We want our own block of land.
00:03:43 --> 00:03:44 We want our own home.
00:03:44 --> 00:03:47 We want our own financial security.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:49 We want our own career.
00:03:50 --> 00:03:54 And we may even think about working for ourselves so that we don't have to answer to anyone.
00:03:55 --> 00:04:00 Or perhaps for some of us it may be that we want to create our own image and manufacture ourselves.
00:04:01 --> 00:04:04 And so we create our own identity on our Facebook page.
00:04:04 --> 00:04:08 Where we can present the way we would like people to see us to the world around us.
00:04:10 --> 00:04:14 Well this way of thinking easily creeps into our thinking about God as well.
00:04:16 --> 00:04:19 We want to choose how we relate to God.
00:04:20 --> 00:04:23 You know, I want to do it on my terms.
00:04:24 --> 00:04:26 And we can easily see it in our friends.
00:04:26 --> 00:04:29 It's easier to see the faults in our friends, isn't it, than in ourselves.
00:04:29 --> 00:04:31 When they say things like,
00:04:31 --> 00:04:35 Well, I like to think about God as...
00:04:35 --> 00:04:42 Or, I think God would let me into his heaven because, well, I'm a pretty good bloke.
00:04:43 --> 00:04:45 Not like so-and-so down the road.
00:04:47 --> 00:04:49 But do we actually notice it in ourselves?
00:04:49 --> 00:04:51 It's easy to see the faults in others.
00:04:51 --> 00:04:53 But do we take a good look at ourselves?
00:04:54 --> 00:04:57 Those times when we start to compare ourselves to other people.
00:04:57 --> 00:05:00 Thinking that we're better in some way.
00:05:01 --> 00:05:02 Or when we look down on someone.
00:05:02 --> 00:05:08 Wondering how they could possibly call themselves a Christian and talk like that.
00:05:08 --> 00:05:10 Or act like that.
00:05:12 --> 00:05:13 And it's usually...
00:05:13 --> 00:05:16 We usually do that to make ourselves look better.
00:05:17 --> 00:05:19 You know, I don't talk like that.
00:05:19 --> 00:05:20 I don't act like that.
00:05:20 --> 00:05:22 Aren't I good?
00:05:22 --> 00:05:29 Well, here in this passage, in Luke's Gospel,
00:05:30 --> 00:05:34 we meet someone who has this kind of DIY thinking about God.
00:05:35 --> 00:05:38 And here Jesus is confronted by DIY religion.
00:05:40 --> 00:05:41 Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem
00:05:41 --> 00:05:46 and he's teaching his disciples along the way about what it means to follow him.
00:05:46 --> 00:05:51 When a religious lawyer, an expert in the law,
00:05:51 --> 00:05:53 he comes up to Jesus with a question.
00:05:53 --> 00:05:55 It's helpful if you've got your Bibles open in front of you.
00:05:56 --> 00:05:59 Look at verse 25 in this passage.
00:06:00 --> 00:06:02 Luke chapter 10, verse 25.
00:06:03 --> 00:06:07 On one occasion, an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus.
00:06:08 --> 00:06:09 Teacher, he asked,
00:06:10 --> 00:06:13 what must I do to inherit eternal life?
00:06:13 --> 00:06:17 And initially, it looks like a pretty good question, doesn't it?
00:06:17 --> 00:06:20 What must I do to inherit eternal life?
00:06:21 --> 00:06:22 It seems to be a good question
00:06:22 --> 00:06:25 because it picks up what Jesus has just been saying
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 in the previous chapter of Luke's Gospel.
00:06:28 --> 00:06:29 I mean, this man has come to Jesus
00:06:29 --> 00:06:33 and he's asking Jesus how he should follow Jesus.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:37 And we saw last week that the disciples,
00:06:37 --> 00:06:40 well, they haven't really understood what it means to follow Jesus.
00:06:41 --> 00:06:43 They understand that Jesus is the Christ,
00:06:43 --> 00:06:45 that he's God's anointed king.
00:06:47 --> 00:06:51 But they've not understood Jesus' call
00:06:51 --> 00:06:53 to follow him by denying themselves,
00:06:53 --> 00:06:56 by taking up their cross and following him.
00:06:57 --> 00:07:00 And so when this teacher of the law comes up to Jesus,
00:07:00 --> 00:07:02 we should find ourselves on the edge of our seats
00:07:02 --> 00:07:05 in anticipation when he asks,
00:07:06 --> 00:07:08 what must I do to inherit eternal life?
00:07:09 --> 00:07:10 I mean, it's a pretty good question, isn't it?
00:07:10 --> 00:07:12 We want to know too, what's the secret?
00:07:13 --> 00:07:15 What's the secret to following Jesus?
00:07:16 --> 00:07:19 Can't you just imagine yourself asking the same question?
00:07:21 --> 00:07:22 You see, we like things to be simple.
00:07:23 --> 00:07:24 We like shortcuts.
00:07:25 --> 00:07:27 You know, we all learn the back roads to miss the traffic,
00:07:28 --> 00:07:30 to miss those busy traffic lights or intersections.
00:07:30 --> 00:07:34 We always look for the shortest queue at the supermarket checkout.
00:07:35 --> 00:07:37 But have you noticed that the shortest queue always takes the longest?
00:07:38 --> 00:07:40 Whenever you get there, the other queues are always faster.
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 Well, this guy is no different.
00:07:43 --> 00:07:45 He cuts to the chase and he says to Jesus,
00:07:45 --> 00:07:47 okay, Jesus, give it to me straight.
00:07:48 --> 00:07:50 What do I have to do to get to heaven?
00:07:52 --> 00:07:53 Well, maybe it's just a bloke thing.
00:07:54 --> 00:07:55 You know, don't give me all the details.
00:07:55 --> 00:07:56 Don't bore me with the details.
00:07:56 --> 00:07:58 Just give me the bottom line.
00:07:58 --> 00:07:59 What do I have to do?
00:08:01 --> 00:08:04 And Jesus knows this man is an expert in the law
00:08:04 --> 00:08:06 and so he throws the question straight back at him.
00:08:07 --> 00:08:08 Well, what do you think?
00:08:09 --> 00:08:09 Says Jesus.
00:08:11 --> 00:08:12 So it's a great technique, isn't it?
00:08:12 --> 00:08:14 When you're having conversations with people,
00:08:14 --> 00:08:17 it's hard to get to know someone if you're conducting a monologue.
00:08:18 --> 00:08:21 It's good to ask questions and that's how you get to know someone.
00:08:21 --> 00:08:24 And so Jesus asks him a question back.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:28 Well, you know your Bible, or the Old Testament at least at this point.
00:08:29 --> 00:08:31 And so Jesus asks him, so what do you think?
00:08:32 --> 00:08:35 Well, look at verses 26 to 28.
00:08:37 --> 00:08:39 What is written in the law, he replied.
00:08:39 --> 00:08:40 How do you read it?
00:08:40 --> 00:08:41 That's what Jesus says.
00:08:42 --> 00:08:43 And the guy answers,
00:08:43 --> 00:09:01 See, he seems to be spot on with his answer, doesn't he?
00:09:01 --> 00:09:04 I mean, even Jesus confirms his answer and says,
00:09:04 --> 00:09:07 Well, do this and you will live.
00:09:08 --> 00:09:10 What must I do to inherit eternal life?
00:09:11 --> 00:09:12 Well, the answer is simple.
00:09:12 --> 00:09:14 Love God and love your neighbor.
00:09:16 --> 00:09:17 But it does make you wonder,
00:09:17 --> 00:09:19 Well, if he knew the answer,
00:09:19 --> 00:09:22 why did he ask the question in the first place?
00:09:24 --> 00:09:26 Love God and love your neighbor.
00:09:26 --> 00:09:27 That's the secret to life.
00:09:27 --> 00:09:30 That's the secret to life with God, eternal life.
00:09:30 --> 00:09:34 And the expert in the law seems to have it nailed in one.
00:09:36 --> 00:09:38 But then we're given a glimpse into the real reason
00:09:38 --> 00:09:40 why this guy is asking the question.
00:09:41 --> 00:09:45 And Jesus opens up the religious expert's heart.
00:09:45 --> 00:09:49 He opens up his heart and exposes what's really there.
00:09:50 --> 00:09:51 You see, look at verse 29.
00:09:51 --> 00:09:54 But he wanted to justify himself.
00:09:55 --> 00:09:57 And so he asked Jesus,
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 And who is my neighbor?
00:10:00 --> 00:10:02 He wanted to justify himself.
00:10:03 --> 00:10:06 See, at this point, it seems that all that's come before,
00:10:06 --> 00:10:08 all that's already happened in this dialogue
00:10:08 --> 00:10:10 between Jesus and this expert in the law,
00:10:11 --> 00:10:14 it seems that it's all just a facade.
00:10:14 --> 00:10:16 It seems that he was just trying to test Jesus
00:10:16 --> 00:10:18 to somehow catch Jesus out.
00:10:18 --> 00:10:22 That he wasn't really interested in Jesus' answer at all.
00:10:23 --> 00:10:25 In fact, if we were reading carefully,
00:10:25 --> 00:10:27 we would have noticed that back in verse 25.
00:10:28 --> 00:10:31 Where he says, Luke tells us,
00:10:31 --> 00:10:34 On one occasion, an expert in the law stood up
00:10:34 --> 00:10:37 to test Jesus.
00:10:38 --> 00:10:38 To test Jesus.
00:10:39 --> 00:10:41 He didn't really want to know the answer.
00:10:41 --> 00:10:43 He was trying to catch Jesus out.
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 To show him up.
00:10:44 --> 00:10:46 Perhaps even to promote himself
00:10:46 --> 00:10:48 as someone who knows the law pretty well.
00:10:48 --> 00:10:51 And to do that at Jesus' expense.
00:10:51 --> 00:10:53 To make Jesus look silly and promote himself.
00:10:54 --> 00:10:56 Showing himself to be more knowledgeable.
00:10:58 --> 00:10:59 But Jesus calls his bluff
00:10:59 --> 00:11:01 and he turns the tables around on him
00:11:01 --> 00:11:03 and exposes his heart.
00:11:04 --> 00:11:06 And so the expert in the law pushes further
00:11:06 --> 00:11:08 to justify himself.
00:11:09 --> 00:11:11 And perhaps even to get a second chance
00:11:11 --> 00:11:11 to test Jesus.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 And so he asks,
00:11:13 --> 00:11:15 Well, who is my neighbor then?
00:11:16 --> 00:11:18 And Jesus replies with a story.
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 It's a parable.
00:11:20 --> 00:11:22 It's a fairly familiar parable
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 to many of us, isn't it?
00:11:24 --> 00:11:26 But as we read this parable,
00:11:26 --> 00:11:27 it's crucial that we understand
00:11:27 --> 00:11:30 who it is who is asking Jesus this question.
00:11:31 --> 00:11:34 For Jesus knows this man's heart.
00:11:35 --> 00:11:37 And so he tailor-makes this parable
00:11:37 --> 00:11:39 to challenge him,
00:11:39 --> 00:11:42 to hit him where he needs to be hit.
00:11:43 --> 00:11:45 Now here this man is an expert in the law.
00:11:46 --> 00:11:48 And so as the story unfolds,
00:11:48 --> 00:11:50 we read of a man or hear of a man
00:11:50 --> 00:11:52 heading down from Jerusalem to Jericho
00:11:52 --> 00:11:54 and he's robbed and he's beaten
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 and he's left half dead.
00:11:57 --> 00:11:59 And the first two characters we meet
00:11:59 --> 00:12:01 is a priest and a Levite.
00:12:03 --> 00:12:04 And what should we know about them?
00:12:04 --> 00:12:06 Well, they're both religious experts.
00:12:06 --> 00:12:08 They're both experts in the law.
00:12:09 --> 00:12:11 Just like the man speaking to Jesus,
00:12:11 --> 00:12:13 these two men both know the law.
00:12:15 --> 00:12:17 But it appears they know the letter of the law
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 but not the essence of the law.
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 They've got knowledge
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 but they don't have understanding.
00:12:21 --> 00:12:23 They don't understand God's character.
00:12:23 --> 00:12:25 They don't have any mercy
00:12:25 --> 00:12:27 or compassion for those around them.
00:12:28 --> 00:12:30 You see, we're not told the exact reason
00:12:30 --> 00:12:33 why the priest and the Levite walk past this man
00:12:33 --> 00:12:36 just that they don't stop to help.
00:12:37 --> 00:12:39 Although we are given a few hints in the direction.
00:12:41 --> 00:12:43 And so we are told that this man
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 falls into the hands of robbers
00:12:44 --> 00:12:47 who strip him and beat him
00:12:47 --> 00:12:49 and leave him half dead.
00:12:51 --> 00:12:53 And since the first two men knew the law of Moses,
00:12:54 --> 00:12:56 they knew what the consequences would be
00:12:56 --> 00:12:59 if they stopped and touched this man
00:12:59 --> 00:13:00 if he was dead.
00:13:01 --> 00:13:02 He's lying there half dead.
00:13:02 --> 00:13:04 They didn't perhaps know
00:13:04 --> 00:13:05 whether he was dead or alive
00:13:05 --> 00:13:08 and so they erred on the side of caution
00:13:08 --> 00:13:10 and decided not to get involved.
00:13:12 --> 00:13:14 If they had have touched an unclean body,
00:13:14 --> 00:13:14 a dead body,
00:13:15 --> 00:13:16 well, they would have to go through
00:13:16 --> 00:13:18 certain ceremonial rites
00:13:18 --> 00:13:20 and they would be unclean for seven days
00:13:20 --> 00:13:21 and it would be a lot of effort
00:13:21 --> 00:13:22 on the third and seventh day
00:13:22 --> 00:13:25 to go through cleansing kind of ceremonies.
00:13:26 --> 00:13:29 And so it would have put them out
00:13:29 --> 00:13:31 to do that.
00:13:32 --> 00:13:34 And it doesn't seem the reason
00:13:34 --> 00:13:36 these men didn't stop to help
00:13:36 --> 00:13:39 was because they were on their way up to Jerusalem
00:13:39 --> 00:13:41 and they didn't want to be unclean
00:13:41 --> 00:13:42 and so not go to the temple.
00:13:43 --> 00:13:44 That doesn't seem to be the reason
00:13:44 --> 00:13:46 because it appears that these men
00:13:46 --> 00:13:48 are actually coming from Jerusalem.
00:13:50 --> 00:13:52 I haven't been to Jerusalem
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 but as my understanding is,
00:13:53 --> 00:13:55 Jerusalem's on a mountain.
00:13:55 --> 00:13:56 Jerusalem, hence Mount Zion
00:13:56 --> 00:13:59 and the road from Jerusalem
00:13:59 --> 00:14:01 winds its way down to Jericho
00:14:01 --> 00:14:03 and so you would head down
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 from Jerusalem to Jericho.
00:14:05 --> 00:14:07 And that's the way Jesus describes
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 this story.
00:14:08 --> 00:14:10 And so in verse 30,
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 Jesus says,
00:14:12 --> 00:14:13 a man was going down
00:14:13 --> 00:14:15 from Jerusalem to Jericho.
00:14:15 --> 00:14:19 And we also read that the priest
00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 and the Levite do the same.
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 In verse 31,
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 a priest happened to be going down
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 the same road.
00:14:25 --> 00:14:26 It seems that they're leaving Jerusalem
00:14:26 --> 00:14:29 and going on the road to Jericho.
00:14:31 --> 00:14:32 And so it's not that they've got the excuse
00:14:32 --> 00:14:33 of going to the temple
00:14:33 --> 00:14:35 that they don't want to be defiled.
00:14:35 --> 00:14:37 It just seems an inconvenience.
00:14:37 --> 00:14:39 It's,
00:14:39 --> 00:14:40 and so they're not,
00:14:40 --> 00:14:41 it's not that they're worried
00:14:41 --> 00:14:42 that they won't be able to worship
00:14:42 --> 00:14:43 at the temple,
00:14:44 --> 00:14:46 but they still don't want to defile themselves
00:14:46 --> 00:14:47 by helping this man.
00:14:48 --> 00:14:48 See,
00:14:48 --> 00:14:50 these two religious people
00:14:50 --> 00:14:52 are proficient in the law,
00:14:52 --> 00:14:53 but they don't want to put themselves out
00:14:53 --> 00:14:56 to help someone in great need.
00:14:56 --> 00:15:00 And so you can imagine them
00:15:00 --> 00:15:02 even perhaps using God
00:15:02 --> 00:15:03 as an excuse not to help this man.
00:15:04 --> 00:15:05 I need to say pure
00:15:05 --> 00:15:07 so I can serve God better.
00:15:08 --> 00:15:09 Perhaps it's piety
00:15:09 --> 00:15:10 that's got in the way.
00:15:10 --> 00:15:12 And so they fail to love their neighbor
00:15:12 --> 00:15:14 who is in desperate need.
00:15:15 --> 00:15:16 But in doing so,
00:15:16 --> 00:15:18 they're failing to love God as well.
00:15:19 --> 00:15:19 See,
00:15:19 --> 00:15:20 it's not those two commands
00:15:20 --> 00:15:21 kind of a mutually exclusive
00:15:21 --> 00:15:23 that we love God
00:15:23 --> 00:15:24 or we love our neighbor
00:15:24 --> 00:15:25 and we can take either route.
00:15:27 --> 00:15:27 No,
00:15:27 --> 00:15:28 as we love God,
00:15:28 --> 00:15:30 we will act
00:15:30 --> 00:15:31 as God does
00:15:31 --> 00:15:32 to those around us.
00:15:32 --> 00:15:34 With mercy and compassion,
00:15:34 --> 00:15:35 we will love our neighbor.
00:15:36 --> 00:15:38 How can we experience God's love
00:15:38 --> 00:15:40 and fail to love those around us?
00:15:43 --> 00:15:44 And so we're challenged
00:15:44 --> 00:15:46 as these people refuse
00:15:46 --> 00:15:47 to get involved.
00:15:48 --> 00:15:49 And then Jesus,
00:15:49 --> 00:15:50 well,
00:15:50 --> 00:15:51 he throws in a bit of a googly.
00:15:52 --> 00:15:53 Or if you're not into cricket,
00:15:53 --> 00:15:54 it's called a rongan,
00:15:54 --> 00:15:54 I think nowadays.
00:15:55 --> 00:15:56 He brings in
00:15:56 --> 00:15:57 an unexpected character.
00:15:58 --> 00:16:00 And so enter stage left
00:16:00 --> 00:16:01 comes a Samaritan.
00:16:03 --> 00:16:04 Now there's no love lost
00:16:04 --> 00:16:05 in Jesus' day
00:16:05 --> 00:16:06 between the Jewish people
00:16:06 --> 00:16:08 and the Samaritans.
00:16:08 --> 00:16:09 And so if you remember
00:16:09 --> 00:16:10 in John's Gospel
00:16:10 --> 00:16:12 as Jesus meets
00:16:12 --> 00:16:13 the woman at the well,
00:16:13 --> 00:16:14 the Samaritan woman
00:16:14 --> 00:16:14 at the well,
00:16:15 --> 00:16:16 John gives us
00:16:16 --> 00:16:17 a little editor's note
00:16:17 --> 00:16:18 to say that
00:16:18 --> 00:16:20 it was surprising
00:16:20 --> 00:16:21 because Jews
00:16:21 --> 00:16:22 don't associate
00:16:22 --> 00:16:23 with Samaritans.

00:16:33 --> 00:16:34 might have been doing
00:16:34 --> 00:16:35 God a bit of a favor
00:16:35 --> 00:16:36 to smite
00:16:36 --> 00:16:37 a Samaritan village.
00:16:38 --> 00:16:39 What would one village
00:16:39 --> 00:16:39 less be?
00:16:40 --> 00:16:41 And so it would have
00:16:41 --> 00:16:42 shocked Jesus'
00:16:42 --> 00:16:43 hearers
00:16:43 --> 00:16:44 that a Samaritan
00:16:44 --> 00:16:45 would be a hero
00:16:45 --> 00:16:46 of a story.
00:16:47 --> 00:16:48 It would be like,
00:16:48 --> 00:16:49 you know,
00:16:49 --> 00:16:49 a drug dealer
00:16:49 --> 00:16:50 being the hero
00:16:50 --> 00:16:51 of a story
00:16:51 --> 00:16:53 or a pimp
00:16:53 --> 00:16:54 or
00:16:54 --> 00:16:56 insert,
00:16:56 --> 00:16:57 someone that would
00:16:57 --> 00:16:57 kind of add
00:16:57 --> 00:16:58 shocking value.
00:16:59 --> 00:17:00 It would be a surprise
00:17:00 --> 00:17:01 that a Samaritan
00:17:01 --> 00:17:02 would be the hero
00:17:02 --> 00:17:03 here in this story.
00:17:03 --> 00:17:04 And even the expert
00:17:04 --> 00:17:05 of the law
00:17:05 --> 00:17:06 who's stood up
00:17:06 --> 00:17:07 to test Jesus,
00:17:08 --> 00:17:09 he himself acknowledges
00:17:09 --> 00:17:10 that it's the Samaritan
00:17:10 --> 00:17:11 in the parable
00:17:11 --> 00:17:12 who is the one
00:17:12 --> 00:17:13 who acts rightly,
00:17:13 --> 00:17:14 who acts mercifully
00:17:14 --> 00:17:16 towards the half-dead man.
00:17:19 --> 00:17:20 The Samaritan
00:17:20 --> 00:17:21 who is considered
00:17:21 --> 00:17:22 to be defiled
00:17:22 --> 00:17:23 by Jews,
00:17:23 --> 00:17:24 who's considered
00:17:24 --> 00:17:25 to be a half-caste Jew,
00:17:27 --> 00:17:27 he is the one
00:17:27 --> 00:17:29 who acts in a manner
00:17:29 --> 00:17:31 worthy of one
00:17:31 --> 00:17:31 who would inherit
00:17:31 --> 00:17:32 eternal life.
00:17:33 --> 00:17:34 He acts in a manner
00:17:34 --> 00:17:35 of one
00:17:35 --> 00:17:36 who would inherit
00:17:36 --> 00:17:37 eternal life.
00:17:38 --> 00:17:39 And yet the religious
00:17:39 --> 00:17:40 experts in the law,
00:17:40 --> 00:17:41 the ones we think
00:17:41 --> 00:17:42 would be on the inside,
00:17:42 --> 00:17:43 they fail to act
00:17:43 --> 00:17:44 as one who would
00:17:44 --> 00:17:45 inherit eternal life.
00:17:46 --> 00:17:47 See, the story
00:17:47 --> 00:17:48 seems to be upside down.
00:17:48 --> 00:17:49 Who is in
00:17:49 --> 00:17:50 and who is out,
00:17:50 --> 00:17:51 it's all back to front.
00:17:52 --> 00:17:53 Surely the religious guys,
00:17:53 --> 00:17:54 they should be in.
00:17:55 --> 00:17:55 But no,
00:17:55 --> 00:17:56 it's the Samaritan.
00:17:58 --> 00:17:59 How could the Samaritan
00:17:59 --> 00:17:59 get in
00:17:59 --> 00:18:00 and the Levite
00:18:00 --> 00:18:02 and the priest not?
00:18:03 --> 00:18:04 Jesus is clearly showing
00:18:04 --> 00:18:05 that it's not about
00:18:05 --> 00:18:06 position or status.
00:18:07 --> 00:18:08 It's not about titles
00:18:08 --> 00:18:09 or roles.
00:18:09 --> 00:18:10 Something else
00:18:10 --> 00:18:11 is going on here.
00:18:12 --> 00:18:13 This is no
00:18:13 --> 00:18:15 sentimental story
00:18:15 --> 00:18:15 that Jesus
00:18:15 --> 00:18:16 is telling us about,
00:18:17 --> 00:18:17 you know,
00:18:17 --> 00:18:18 about how we should
00:18:18 --> 00:18:19 be nice to our sister
00:18:19 --> 00:18:21 or be good to your mother.
00:18:22 --> 00:18:23 Nor is it about
00:18:23 --> 00:18:25 being nice to those
00:18:25 --> 00:18:25 who are nice to you.
00:18:25 --> 00:18:26 You know,
00:18:26 --> 00:18:27 I'll only lend my lawnmower
00:18:27 --> 00:18:28 to the neighbour I like,
00:18:28 --> 00:18:29 not to the neighbour
00:18:29 --> 00:18:30 that I don't like.
00:18:32 --> 00:18:32 You see,
00:18:32 --> 00:18:33 Jesus is challenging
00:18:33 --> 00:18:34 the very way
00:18:34 --> 00:18:35 we view people
00:18:35 --> 00:18:36 and the way
00:18:36 --> 00:18:37 we judge people
00:18:37 --> 00:18:38 around us.
00:18:39 --> 00:18:40 Who are the needy?
00:18:41 --> 00:18:43 Who can we act
00:18:43 --> 00:18:44 mercifully towards?
00:18:44 --> 00:18:46 Do we kind of
00:18:46 --> 00:18:47 judge people
00:18:47 --> 00:18:48 we look at
00:18:48 --> 00:18:49 and decide
00:18:49 --> 00:18:49 who we're going
00:18:49 --> 00:18:50 to get involved with
00:18:50 --> 00:18:51 and who not?
00:18:51 --> 00:18:52 Who's going to be
00:18:52 --> 00:18:52 less effort?
00:18:52 --> 00:18:54 Who's more like us?

00:18:56 --> 00:18:57 it's interesting
00:18:57 --> 00:18:57 as I came up
00:18:57 --> 00:18:58 to St Paul's here
00:18:58 --> 00:18:59 on Friday
00:18:59 --> 00:19:00 afternoon,
00:19:01 --> 00:19:02 I caught the train
00:19:02 --> 00:19:02 here with the kids
00:19:02 --> 00:19:03 to pick up a car
00:19:03 --> 00:19:04 that someone
00:19:04 --> 00:19:05 from St Paul's
00:19:05 --> 00:19:07 was lending to us.
00:19:07 --> 00:19:08 And I was walking up
00:19:08 --> 00:19:09 from Chatswood Station
00:19:09 --> 00:19:11 with my four children
00:19:11 --> 00:19:12 around me
00:19:12 --> 00:19:14 and there was a group
00:19:14 --> 00:19:15 of about seven or eight
00:19:15 --> 00:19:17 fifteen year olds
00:19:17 --> 00:19:17 they looked
00:19:17 --> 00:19:19 and they had bottles
00:19:19 --> 00:19:20 of beer
00:19:20 --> 00:19:21 and a cask of wine
00:19:21 --> 00:19:22 and they were drinking
00:19:22 --> 00:19:24 and carrying on
00:19:24 --> 00:19:25 filling in their
00:19:25 --> 00:19:26 school holidays
00:19:26 --> 00:19:26 no doubt.
00:19:27 --> 00:19:28 But I started to get
00:19:28 --> 00:19:29 a bit concerned
00:19:29 --> 00:19:30 about my children
00:19:30 --> 00:19:30 and I didn't really
00:19:30 --> 00:19:31 want them to be
00:19:31 --> 00:19:32 near this group
00:19:32 --> 00:19:34 of kids
00:19:34 --> 00:19:34 that looked
00:19:34 --> 00:19:35 like they were
00:19:35 --> 00:19:36 looking for some
00:19:36 --> 00:19:37 mischief to get up to
00:19:37 --> 00:19:38 and smashed a bottle
00:19:38 --> 00:19:40 and so I was
00:19:40 --> 00:19:41 quite concerned.
00:19:41 --> 00:19:42 I kind of didn't
00:19:42 --> 00:19:42 really want anything
00:19:42 --> 00:19:43 to do with them
00:19:43 --> 00:19:44 particularly because
00:19:44 --> 00:19:44 I had my children
00:19:44 --> 00:19:45 with me.
00:19:48 --> 00:19:49 And I was saddened
00:19:49 --> 00:19:50 as I thought back
00:19:50 --> 00:19:51 on it
00:19:51 --> 00:19:51 and I thought
00:19:51 --> 00:19:53 isn't it interesting
00:19:53 --> 00:19:53 that I'm
00:19:53 --> 00:19:56 quite concerned
00:19:56 --> 00:19:57 about my kids
00:19:57 --> 00:19:57 whom I love
00:19:57 --> 00:19:58 and yet here are
00:19:58 --> 00:19:59 some needy
00:19:59 --> 00:20:00 teenagers
00:20:00 --> 00:20:01 here in Chatswood
00:20:01 --> 00:20:04 turning to alcohol
00:20:04 --> 00:20:05 to fulfil
00:20:05 --> 00:20:06 their felt needs
00:20:06 --> 00:20:07 kids
00:20:07 --> 00:20:09 and not even
00:20:09 --> 00:20:09 realising
00:20:09 --> 00:20:10 what their
00:20:10 --> 00:20:11 greater needs
00:20:11 --> 00:20:11 were.
00:20:11 --> 00:20:12 Kids who needed
00:20:12 --> 00:20:13 mercy
00:20:13 --> 00:20:14 and yet didn't
00:20:14 --> 00:20:15 even realise it
00:20:15 --> 00:20:17 and here I was
00:20:17 --> 00:20:19 stepping around
00:20:19 --> 00:20:19 them
00:20:19 --> 00:20:20 to go on my
00:20:20 --> 00:20:21 way.
00:20:22 --> 00:20:23 You see
00:20:23 --> 00:20:23 there's plenty
00:20:23 --> 00:20:24 of needy people
00:20:24 --> 00:20:25 throughout our
00:20:25 --> 00:20:25 community
00:20:25 --> 00:20:27 not just
00:20:27 --> 00:20:27 teenagers
00:20:27 --> 00:20:28 but people
00:20:28 --> 00:20:29 of all ages
00:20:29 --> 00:20:29 and stages
00:20:29 --> 00:20:31 people
00:20:31 --> 00:20:32 who are half
00:20:32 --> 00:20:32 dead
00:20:32 --> 00:20:34 people who are
00:20:34 --> 00:20:34 broken
00:20:34 --> 00:20:35 people who
00:20:35 --> 00:20:35 are without
00:20:35 --> 00:20:36 hope in
00:20:36 --> 00:20:37 this world
00:20:37 --> 00:20:38 yearning for
00:20:38 --> 00:20:38 something
00:20:38 --> 00:20:39 better.
00:20:41 --> 00:20:42 And that's
00:20:42 --> 00:20:43 what Jesus
00:20:43 --> 00:20:44 is challenging
00:20:44 --> 00:20:44 this expert
00:20:44 --> 00:20:45 in the law
00:20:45 --> 00:20:46 about where
00:20:46 --> 00:20:46 is his heart
00:20:46 --> 00:20:47 really at?
00:20:48 --> 00:20:49 How does he
00:20:49 --> 00:20:49 view people?
00:20:49 --> 00:20:50 Does he view
00:20:50 --> 00:20:51 people the way
00:20:51 --> 00:20:52 God does?
00:20:52 --> 00:20:53 With compassion
00:20:53 --> 00:20:54 with mercy?
00:20:56 --> 00:20:57 Or are we
00:20:57 --> 00:20:57 so busy
00:20:57 --> 00:20:58 we just go
00:20:58 --> 00:20:58 on our way?
00:20:58 --> 00:21:02 But Jesus
00:21:02 --> 00:21:02 isn't teaching
00:21:02 --> 00:21:04 Christian moralism
00:21:04 --> 00:21:04 here either
00:21:04 --> 00:21:06 as if the way
00:21:06 --> 00:21:06 to get to
00:21:06 --> 00:21:07 heaven is by
00:21:07 --> 00:21:07 being good
00:21:07 --> 00:21:08 enough.
00:21:08 --> 00:21:08 You know
00:21:08 --> 00:21:09 you've got to
00:21:09 --> 00:21:10 be a good
00:21:10 --> 00:21:11 Samaritan to
00:21:11 --> 00:21:12 enough people
00:21:12 --> 00:21:13 to somehow
00:21:13 --> 00:21:13 earn God's
00:21:13 --> 00:21:14 favour.
00:21:14 --> 00:21:15 If you help
00:21:15 --> 00:21:16 enough people
00:21:16 --> 00:21:16 then surely
00:21:16 --> 00:21:17 God will let
00:21:17 --> 00:21:17 you into his
00:21:17 --> 00:21:18 heaven.
00:21:19 --> 00:21:19 You see
00:21:19 --> 00:21:20 that's confusing
00:21:20 --> 00:21:21 the two questions
00:21:21 --> 00:21:22 that the expert
00:21:22 --> 00:21:22 in the law
00:21:22 --> 00:21:23 is asking
00:21:23 --> 00:21:23 here.
00:21:24 --> 00:21:25 You see
00:21:25 --> 00:21:25 the parable
00:21:25 --> 00:21:26 that Jesus
00:21:26 --> 00:21:27 tells here
00:21:27 --> 00:21:28 is in

00:22:19 --> 00:22:20 himself as
00:22:20 --> 00:22:20 someone who
