00:00:05 --> 00:00:10 It's January, it's that time of year where we look forward to the year that's been,
00:00:10 --> 00:00:17 we celebrate maybe what's been, we certainly, or the year that's coming,
00:00:17 --> 00:00:22 but also look back and reflect upon the year that's been, lessons learned, things like that.
00:00:23 --> 00:00:26 Reflection, however, is not something that we tend to do,
00:00:26 --> 00:00:30 it's not something that is a habit nowadays for most people,
00:00:31 --> 00:00:37 that is the ability to assess what has been, learn the lessons from it,
00:00:37 --> 00:00:40 and make the necessary changes as we move forward into the future.
00:00:41 --> 00:00:44 What we tend to do is escape.
00:00:44 --> 00:00:50 Moment of January, moment where things may be not as busy, we self-indulge,
00:00:50 --> 00:00:53 we escape into TV and movies and holidays and everything else,
00:00:53 --> 00:00:56 rather than actually pause and reflect.
00:00:56 --> 00:01:03 So this series in January here is really an opportunity for us to spend some time reflecting
00:01:03 --> 00:01:08 and looking forward to the year that is,
00:01:09 --> 00:01:14 and what might it be to run the race of discipleship into 2023.
00:01:15 --> 00:01:22 Now one of the things that I've always found helpful throughout my life,
00:01:22 --> 00:01:28 and particularly my Christian life, is to get close to people,
00:01:28 --> 00:01:32 and I'm looking at what does it look like to run the Christian life,
00:01:32 --> 00:01:39 is to get really close to people who have run the race and are further down the track than I am,
00:01:39 --> 00:01:45 and to learn lessons from them, even if they've been dead for 200 years.
00:01:45 --> 00:01:53 There is so many lessons to learn for those who have not just started the race,
00:01:53 --> 00:01:57 but actually run the race all the way to the finish line.
00:01:58 --> 00:02:04 And so I want to encourage you as Christian brothers and sisters to read biography,
00:02:04 --> 00:02:09 to read biography, to learn the lessons of those from the past.
00:02:09 --> 00:02:13 And so in this January series, we're looking at,
00:02:14 --> 00:02:17 we're really basing it on Hebrews 11, Hebrews 12,
00:02:17 --> 00:02:20 to be people of faith and to run the race of faith,
00:02:20 --> 00:02:25 and particularly where Hebrews 11 talks about the great cloud of witnesses,
00:02:26 --> 00:02:29 based on them, run the races before you.
00:02:29 --> 00:02:35 And so we've tried to throw a couple of extra people into that list of Hebrews 11,
00:02:35 --> 00:02:36 of great cloud of witnesses,
00:02:36 --> 00:02:42 and today I want us to introduce one more person to that cloud of witnesses that have gone before us,
00:02:42 --> 00:02:46 who have run the race and finished the course.
00:02:46 --> 00:02:49 And that is, today is John Patton.
00:02:49 --> 00:02:52 So let me pray, and I'll launch into that.
00:02:53 --> 00:02:56 Gracious Father, as we look at one life,
00:02:56 --> 00:02:59 a life redeemed by you,
00:03:00 --> 00:03:03 sovereignly guided by you,
00:03:03 --> 00:03:04 empowered by you,
00:03:05 --> 00:03:08 a life lived well for your glory,
00:03:09 --> 00:03:12 I pray that you would give us the gift of reflection,
00:03:13 --> 00:03:14 as we consider our own life,
00:03:15 --> 00:03:18 the choices we're making now,
00:03:18 --> 00:03:22 and whether or not it is ultimately for your glory or for our own.
00:03:22 --> 00:03:25 And I pray, Father,
00:03:25 --> 00:03:29 that the mission of Matthew that has just been thrown in front of us
00:03:29 --> 00:03:32 would be the mission that drives us,
00:03:34 --> 00:03:37 a mission to see all people come to know and to love you,
00:03:38 --> 00:03:39 and we ask it for your sake.
00:03:40 --> 00:03:40 Amen.
00:03:42 --> 00:03:48 A chain of islands in the Pacific were discovered in 1606 by Spain.
00:03:48 --> 00:03:53 They were named New Hebrides in 1773 by Captain James Cook,
00:03:54 --> 00:03:55 and in 1980,
00:03:56 --> 00:03:59 the New Hebrides gained its independence from Britain and from France,
00:04:00 --> 00:04:02 and was named Vanuatu.
00:04:03 --> 00:04:07 John Williams and James Harris from the London Missionary Society
00:04:07 --> 00:04:14 landed in 1839 as the first Christian missionaries.
00:04:14 --> 00:04:17 And this is what was written about them.
00:04:18 --> 00:04:21 Within a few minutes of their touching land,
00:04:21 --> 00:04:24 both were clubbed to death, cooked and eaten.
00:04:25 --> 00:04:29 The London Missionary Society sent another team
00:04:29 --> 00:04:32 to the island of Tanner in 1842,
00:04:33 --> 00:04:38 and these missionaries were driven off within seven months.
00:04:39 --> 00:04:41 Now, just think about that for a moment.
00:04:41 --> 00:04:44 That's just not history.
00:04:45 --> 00:04:46 Just think about that.
00:04:48 --> 00:04:51 Matthew just read out to us,
00:04:52 --> 00:04:56 go to all nations with this discipleship message,
00:04:58 --> 00:05:05 and it's 1 years before that message hits the New Hebrides.
00:05:06 --> 00:05:08 1 years.
00:05:08 --> 00:05:08 1 years.
00:05:11 --> 00:05:14 What was the church doing?
00:05:18 --> 00:05:20 Anyway, that's not my main point.
00:05:22 --> 00:05:25 Now, that's the remarkable missionary context
00:05:25 --> 00:05:27 of the life and the ministry of John G. Patton,
00:05:28 --> 00:05:30 a missionary to the New Hebrides
00:05:30 --> 00:05:36 who landed there 16 years after Williams and Harris.
00:05:36 --> 00:05:40 So today, if you've got your St. Paul's app,

00:05:44 --> 00:05:46 I want to look at the life of John G. Patton.
00:05:46 --> 00:05:48 I want to look at the courage of John Patton,
00:05:48 --> 00:05:51 and I want to look at what was the source
00:05:51 --> 00:05:55 of Patton's courage for the gospel.
00:05:55 --> 00:06:01 Most of my information comes from autobiography of John Patton,
00:06:02 --> 00:06:03 published in 1889.
00:06:04 --> 00:06:08 This is the 1965 edition of that.
00:06:10 --> 00:06:12 So again, encourage you to read biography
00:06:12 --> 00:06:14 and learn from those in the past.
00:06:14 --> 00:06:17 Patton was born in Scotland in 1824.
00:06:17 --> 00:06:20 He sailed for the New Hebrides via Australia
00:06:20 --> 00:06:24 with his wife Mary in April 1858.
00:06:25 --> 00:06:27 They reached the island of Tanner
00:06:27 --> 00:06:29 on November the 5th of that year,
00:06:30 --> 00:06:31 and four months later,
00:06:31 --> 00:06:34 both his wife and his brand-new-born son died.
00:06:35 --> 00:06:40 He served alone on the island for the next four years
00:06:40 --> 00:06:42 in constant danger
00:06:42 --> 00:06:46 until he was eventually driven off in February 1862.
00:06:46 --> 00:06:49 For the next four years,
00:06:49 --> 00:06:53 he travelled around Australia and Great Britain,
00:06:53 --> 00:06:56 raising awareness of the work
00:06:56 --> 00:06:59 of the Presbyterian mission in the New Hebrides.
00:07:00 --> 00:07:02 He married again in 1864.
00:07:03 --> 00:07:05 He took his wife Margaret back this time
00:07:05 --> 00:07:08 to the smaller island of Anewa.
00:07:09 --> 00:07:12 They laboured together there for 41 years.
00:07:12 --> 00:07:19 When they came to Anewa in November 1866,
00:07:20 --> 00:07:24 the islanders in that place were destitute.
00:07:24 --> 00:07:27 They were cannibals who had, by that time,
00:07:28 --> 00:07:30 only occasionally ate people,
00:07:30 --> 00:07:32 but it was normally their enemies that they ate.
00:07:33 --> 00:07:36 And Christian missionaries were enemies.
00:07:36 --> 00:07:39 They practised infanticide,
00:07:39 --> 00:07:40 that is the killing of infants,
00:07:41 --> 00:07:42 widow sacrifices.
00:07:43 --> 00:07:45 So if your husband died,
00:07:45 --> 00:07:46 they normally killed you
00:07:46 --> 00:07:48 so that you could be with him in the afterlife.
00:07:49 --> 00:07:51 They would...
00:07:53 --> 00:07:54 A number of other things.
00:07:54 --> 00:07:57 He and Margaret laboured in those conditions
00:07:57 --> 00:07:59 for 41 years, hard conditions.
00:08:00 --> 00:08:02 In the next 15 years,
00:08:02 --> 00:08:04 within 15 years of his landing,
00:08:04 --> 00:08:08 the entire island of Anewa turned to Christ.
00:08:09 --> 00:08:10 Remarkable.
00:08:12 --> 00:08:15 That in itself is remarkable.
00:08:15 --> 00:08:19 To go from cannibalism to life in Christ
00:08:19 --> 00:08:20 is remarkable.
00:08:24 --> 00:08:28 Margaret died in 1905 in Kew, Victoria.
00:08:28 --> 00:08:30 Patton outlived her another two years.
00:08:30 --> 00:08:31 He died in Canterbury, Victoria.
00:08:31 --> 00:08:33 In January 28th, 1907.
00:08:34 --> 00:08:35 Both are buried in Kew, Melbourne.
00:08:37 --> 00:08:40 You can visit their tombs today.

00:08:44 --> 00:08:49 will be 116 years since his death.
00:08:50 --> 00:08:53 And his legacy is remarkable.
00:08:56 --> 00:08:58 Vanuatu nowadays has a population
00:08:58 --> 00:09:01 of around 250 people.
00:09:01 --> 00:09:06 Around 94% of that population
00:09:06 --> 00:09:08 are confessing Christians.
00:09:08 --> 00:09:11 73% claim to be Protestant Christians
00:09:11 --> 00:09:13 with the largest group,
00:09:14 --> 00:09:15 the Presbyterian Church.
00:09:17 --> 00:09:22 With 550 congregations
00:09:22 --> 00:09:25 with over 70 people affiliated
00:09:25 --> 00:09:27 with that denomination.
00:09:27 --> 00:09:31 That's more than Sydney Anglicanism.
00:09:33 --> 00:09:35 And a large part of it,
00:09:36 --> 00:09:38 they track it back to John G. Patton.
00:09:41 --> 00:09:43 So, that's his life.
00:09:43 --> 00:09:44 That's his legacy.
00:09:44 --> 00:09:45 Let's look at his courage.
00:09:45 --> 00:09:48 One of the things that stands out
00:09:48 --> 00:09:50 as you read his life
00:09:50 --> 00:09:56 is that he was a man of just incredible courage
00:09:56 --> 00:09:57 for the cause of Christ.
00:09:58 --> 00:09:59 Incredible courage.
00:09:59 --> 00:10:02 And I've got a few things I want to mention.
00:10:02 --> 00:10:05 He had courage to make the advancement
00:10:05 --> 00:10:07 of the gospel,
00:10:07 --> 00:10:10 his greatest and highest priority of life,
00:10:11 --> 00:10:13 even as a teenager.
00:10:15 --> 00:10:16 Mark that.
00:10:16 --> 00:10:18 Even as a teenager.
00:10:18 --> 00:10:19 In his teens,
00:10:19 --> 00:10:20 he had an opportunity
00:10:20 --> 00:10:22 to further his career prospects
00:10:22 --> 00:10:23 as a surveyor,
00:10:24 --> 00:10:24 which was,
00:10:24 --> 00:10:25 you know,
00:10:25 --> 00:10:26 in his day and age,
00:10:26 --> 00:10:27 that was unheard of.
00:10:27 --> 00:10:29 This guy did not come
00:10:29 --> 00:10:30 from some,
00:10:30 --> 00:10:30 you know,
00:10:31 --> 00:10:32 wealthy connected family.
00:10:33 --> 00:10:34 And so,
00:10:34 --> 00:10:36 this was a remarkable opportunity
00:10:36 --> 00:10:38 for effectively a peasant boy.
00:10:39 --> 00:10:41 He was called into the boss's office
00:10:41 --> 00:10:43 and was promised promotion
00:10:43 --> 00:10:44 and special training
00:10:44 --> 00:10:47 entirely at the government's expense.
00:10:49 --> 00:10:51 And the only condition was
00:10:51 --> 00:10:52 that he signed
00:10:52 --> 00:10:55 a seven year engagement contract.
00:10:57 --> 00:10:59 This is what he wrote
00:10:59 --> 00:11:00 about that moment.
00:11:02 --> 00:11:04 Thanking him most gratefully
00:11:04 --> 00:11:05 for his kind offer,
00:11:06 --> 00:11:07 I agreed to bind myself
00:11:07 --> 00:11:09 for three years or four,
00:11:09 --> 00:11:10 but not for seven.
00:11:12 --> 00:11:13 Excitedly,
00:11:13 --> 00:11:14 he said,
00:11:14 --> 00:11:15 why?
00:11:16 --> 00:11:17 Will you refuse an offer
00:11:17 --> 00:11:19 that many gentlemen's sons
00:11:19 --> 00:11:20 would be proud of?
00:11:22 --> 00:11:23 I said,
00:11:24 --> 00:11:25 my life is given
00:11:25 --> 00:11:27 to another master.
00:11:27 --> 00:11:29 And so,
00:11:29 --> 00:11:30 I cannot engage
00:11:30 --> 00:11:31 for seven years.
00:11:32 --> 00:11:33 He asked sharply,
00:11:33 --> 00:11:34 to whom?
00:11:35 --> 00:11:36 I replied,
00:11:37 --> 00:11:38 to the Lord Jesus.
00:11:39 --> 00:11:41 And I want to prepare
00:11:41 --> 00:11:42 as soon as possible
00:11:42 --> 00:11:44 for his service
00:11:44 --> 00:11:45 in the proclaiming
00:11:45 --> 00:11:45 of the gospel.
00:11:47 --> 00:11:48 In great anger,
00:11:48 --> 00:11:50 he sprang across the room,
00:11:51 --> 00:11:52 called the paymaster
00:11:52 --> 00:11:52 and exclaimed,
00:11:53 --> 00:11:54 accept my offer
00:11:54 --> 00:11:56 or you are dismissed
00:11:56 --> 00:11:56 on the spot.
00:11:56 --> 00:11:59 His anger
00:11:59 --> 00:12:00 made him unwilling
00:12:00 --> 00:12:01 or unable
00:12:01 --> 00:12:02 to comprehend
00:12:02 --> 00:12:03 my difficulty.
00:12:04 --> 00:12:06 The drawing instruments
00:12:06 --> 00:12:07 were delivered up,
00:12:07 --> 00:12:09 I received my pay
00:12:09 --> 00:12:10 and I departed
00:12:10 --> 00:12:12 without further parley.
00:12:15 --> 00:12:16 Secondly,
00:12:16 --> 00:12:17 he had courage
00:12:17 --> 00:12:18 to overcome
00:12:18 --> 00:12:19 the criticism
00:12:19 --> 00:12:20 that he received
00:12:20 --> 00:12:21 from respected elders
00:12:22 --> 00:12:23 for in fact
00:12:23 --> 00:12:24 going to the New Hebrides
00:12:24 --> 00:12:25 New Hebrides
00:12:25 --> 00:12:26 as a missionary.
00:12:28 --> 00:12:29 A Mr. Dickinson
00:12:29 --> 00:12:32 who he described
00:12:32 --> 00:12:33 as a dear
00:12:33 --> 00:12:34 old Christian gentleman
00:12:34 --> 00:12:37 tried to deter him
00:12:37 --> 00:12:38 from the New Hebrides.
00:12:40 --> 00:12:41 The cannibals!
00:12:42 --> 00:12:43 You'll be eaten
00:12:43 --> 00:12:44 by cannibals!
00:12:44 --> 00:12:48 Now remember,
00:12:48 --> 00:12:49 Williams and Harris
00:12:49 --> 00:12:49 were eaten
00:12:49 --> 00:12:50 by cannibals
00:12:50 --> 00:12:51 19 years earlier.
00:12:53 --> 00:12:54 Patton's response.
00:12:55 --> 00:12:56 I love it.

00:13:32 --> 00:13:33 or by worms.
00:13:35 --> 00:13:36 And in the great day
00:13:36 --> 00:13:37 my resurrection body
00:13:37 --> 00:13:38 will rise
00:13:38 --> 00:13:40 as fair of yours
00:13:40 --> 00:13:41 in the likeness
00:13:41 --> 00:13:43 of the risen Redeemer.
00:13:46 --> 00:13:48 That is a remarkable
00:13:48 --> 00:13:49 perspective on life.
00:13:52 --> 00:13:53 He writes that
00:13:53 --> 00:13:54 another objection
00:13:54 --> 00:13:55 came up
00:13:55 --> 00:13:55 was this.
00:13:56 --> 00:13:57 He said
00:13:57 --> 00:13:59 the rejection is
00:13:59 --> 00:13:59 there are heathen
00:13:59 --> 00:14:00 here at home.
00:14:01 --> 00:14:02 Why on earth
00:14:02 --> 00:14:02 would you leave
00:14:02 --> 00:14:03 Chatswood
00:14:03 --> 00:14:04 for goodness sake?
00:14:05 --> 00:14:06 Let us seek
00:14:06 --> 00:14:06 and save
00:14:06 --> 00:14:07 first of all
00:14:07 --> 00:14:08 the lost ones
00:14:08 --> 00:14:09 perishing at our
00:14:09 --> 00:14:10 very doors.
00:14:11 --> 00:14:12 This I felt
00:14:12 --> 00:14:14 to be most true
00:14:14 --> 00:14:16 and an appalling
00:14:16 --> 00:14:17 fact.
00:14:18 --> 00:14:19 But I
00:14:19 --> 00:14:20 unfailingly
00:14:20 --> 00:14:21 observed
00:14:21 --> 00:14:21 that those
00:14:21 --> 00:14:22 who made
00:14:22 --> 00:14:23 this retort
00:14:23 --> 00:14:24 neglected
00:14:24 --> 00:14:25 these home
00:14:25 --> 00:14:25 heathens
00:14:25 --> 00:14:26 themselves.

00:14:27 --> 00:14:28 the objection
00:14:28 --> 00:14:29 as from them
00:14:29 --> 00:14:30 lost all
00:14:30 --> 00:14:31 its power.
00:14:32 --> 00:14:33 They would
00:14:33 --> 00:14:34 ungrudgingly
00:14:34 --> 00:14:34 spend more
00:14:34 --> 00:14:35 on a fashionable
00:14:35 --> 00:14:37 party at dinner
00:14:37 --> 00:14:38 or tea
00:14:38 --> 00:14:39 on concert
00:14:39 --> 00:14:41 or balls
00:14:41 --> 00:14:42 or theatres
00:14:42 --> 00:14:44 or on some
00:14:44 --> 00:14:45 ostentatious
00:14:45 --> 00:14:45 display
00:14:45 --> 00:14:47 or worldly
00:14:47 --> 00:14:48 and selfish
00:14:48 --> 00:14:49 indulgent
00:14:49 --> 00:14:50 ten times more
00:14:50 --> 00:14:51 perhaps in a
00:14:51 --> 00:14:52 single day
00:14:52 --> 00:14:53 than they would
00:14:53 --> 00:14:54 give in a year
00:14:54 --> 00:14:56 or in half
00:14:56 --> 00:14:56 a lifetime
00:14:56 --> 00:14:58 for the conversion
00:14:58 --> 00:14:59 of the heathen world
00:14:59 --> 00:15:00 either here
00:15:00 --> 00:15:02 or abroad.
00:15:03 --> 00:15:04 I do
00:15:04 --> 00:15:04 and always
00:15:04 --> 00:15:05 did
00:15:05 --> 00:15:06 only pity
00:15:06 --> 00:15:06 them
00:15:06 --> 00:15:08 as God's
00:15:08 --> 00:15:08 stewards
00:15:08 --> 00:15:09 making such
00:15:09 --> 00:15:10 miserable
00:15:10 --> 00:15:11 use of time
00:15:11 --> 00:15:12 and money
00:15:12 --> 00:15:13 entrusted
00:15:13 --> 00:15:14 to their care.
00:15:16 --> 00:15:16 Can you see
00:15:16 --> 00:15:17 why I'm doing it?
00:15:19 --> 00:15:21 It's an opportunity
00:15:21 --> 00:15:21 for the Holy Spirit
00:15:21 --> 00:15:22 to speak to each
00:15:22 --> 00:15:22 one of us
00:15:22 --> 00:15:23 about our time
00:15:23 --> 00:15:24 and our priorities
00:15:24 --> 00:15:25 our talents
00:15:25 --> 00:15:26 our treasures.
00:15:29 --> 00:15:29 Thirdly
00:15:29 --> 00:15:30 he had courage
00:15:30 --> 00:15:31 to risk losing
00:15:31 --> 00:15:32 his loved ones
00:15:32 --> 00:15:33 for the cause
00:15:33 --> 00:15:33 of the gospel.
00:15:34 --> 00:15:34 I've already
00:15:34 --> 00:15:35 mentioned this
00:15:35 --> 00:15:36 he and his wife
00:15:36 --> 00:15:37 first wife Mary
00:15:37 --> 00:15:38 arrived on the
00:15:38 --> 00:15:39 island of Tanna
00:15:39 --> 00:15:40 in November
00:15:40 --> 00:15:41 1858
00:15:41 --> 00:15:42 their baby
00:15:42 --> 00:15:43 was born
00:15:43 --> 00:15:43 February
00:15:43 --> 00:15:45 1859
00:15:45 --> 00:15:46 four months
